“I just noticed that the pads… We’re all synchronised, so they all get used in the same days before we buy more, but now there’s a surplus and I’ve seen everyone else get theirs—”
“I haven’t hit menopause yet, Camila, thank you for your concern,” Superion gravely interrupted her.
“Oh. I just figured… But you’re okay, right? If there’s anything out of order, you’re often with doctor Salvius. Surely she’ll…”
Suzanne turned red.
“Oh.” Camila bit her lip not to grin. “Doctor Salvius.”
today I read the packaging on my pad wrong and thought it said 100h instead of 10 hours and my first thought was what sort of fucked up mr. beast challenge am I going into here
TL;DR: Discord is NOT making "Find your friends" enabled by default. You're probably not giving Discord your contact information without your knowledge. Their UI choices just suck.
There's a warning post going around by a person I'm not going to name, as I don't want people to dogpile on them. That is NOT the goal of this post, and if you DO harass anyone because of what I write, then you're a garbage person with garbage habits that needs to throw those habits in the garbage.
Rather, my goal with this post is to educate about a Discord feature that's not being represented properly.
-------------------------------------
Supposedly in the new mobile update, Discord added this ""NEW"" feature called "Find your friends", and then they enabled it by default. This feature allows users to use their smartphone contacts to search for their friends on Discord. It also enables others to be able to find you in the exact same way.
Obviously, this would be MASSIVELY dangerous from a privacy perspective.
Imagine if someone had relatives that use Discord. In a scenario like that, those relatives would have an easy way of finding the accounts of family members. And in some home situations, online anonymity from relatives could mean the difference between having an outlet and not having an outlet.
I'm also pretty sure I know some folks with alt accounts (you know who you are). And if Discord was somehow able to cross-reference all your contacts with the Discord accounts you're logged into, that would be DISASTROUSLY EMBARRASSING, to say the least.
So I totally understand how concerning this would be if it turned out to be true.
The thing is, it's not.
The person who made that warning misinterpreted THIS page:
This is the new "Add Friends" page for the Discord mobile app. Obviously, a page to help you add friends. There's a big 'ol window at the bottom showcasing Discord's "Find your friends" feature.
Now, this feature is actually NOT new. It's been around for a long time. But there's a very subtle change that happened with the new update. Take a look at how "Find your friends" used to look:
It starts by giving you a banner at the top of your friends list, telling you that this feature is available. Then when you click on it, it takes you to a page with UI elements that look awfully familiar.
It's pretty clear what happened. In an effort to condense down their friend-finding functions into one menu, Discord took the "Find your friends" setup menu and tossed it in with all the other ways to contact friends.
But by doing this, Discord has made this setup window confusing. It's not immediately obvious if the "Find your friends" feature is ON and running, or OFF and waiting to be activated.
Maybe it would have helped to make the blurple button read something like "Sync contacts" instead of "Find friends". At least then, you could tell at a glance that nothing has been sync'd yet. (Or y'know, maybe just stick to "Grant Permission". That was working just fine before.)
So it seems the OP:
Looked at the "Find your friends" setup menu that Discord hastily slapped into the "Add friends" page
Noticed the checkbox that read "Allow contacts to add me"
Saw that it was already marked
Then assumed that it must be some kind of tucked-away setting that was left ON by default.
To make this abundantly clear, "Find your friends" only works if you opt-in.
That checkmark allows you to tell Discord you are okay with people finding you in this manner. Unchecking it makes it possible to use "Find your friends" without others being able to find you the same way.
It doesn't get set up on your device until you press the big blurple "Find friends" button. Even then, you still have to add your phone number to your account and verify it via a 6-digit code sent via SMS.
After that, you have to give Discord permission to access your contacts via whatever phone OS you use.
You have to be pretty deliberate for any of these functions to start.
I won't say it's impossible to set it up on accident. It's a strange world, and stranger things have happened. If you want to, go check your app permissions to make sure you don't have contact permissions enabled for Discord. It's always good to be sure. But rest easy knowing that you probably don't have to worry about it.
-------------------------------------
In my opinion, I think that anyone who reblogged that warning should consider reversing those reblogs.
Honestly, I also think the OP should just delete their post instead of repeatedly adding amended reblogs to it. At the end of the day, the core of that post was misinformation and misguided assumptions. There's no real reason to keep it up.
Besides, I'd rather pin Discord on things they're ACTUALLY guilty of. Like designing a new UI that's widely mocked. And making things 10x more confusing for the end-user.
Here's Discord's official "Find your friends" FAQ page:
I hate to beg, but I'd appreciate if people would reblog this post. I fear that the warning post is gonna steer a LOT of people to believe a lot of things about Discord that are logically and functionally not true.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

try to salvage one of the EYE-LIGHT-THINGS as a signal amplifier for ANTI-SPACECRAFT ECLIPSE BUSTER

Eureka! You recall from your WARMECH COMPLIANCE COURSE years ago that most vehicles from this era use a TIME-STAGGERED EXPLOSION CHAMBER to power their HEADLAMPS. Since the fleshy device is still IN ONE PIECE it's likely the power source has not SYNC'D to the current time; meaning the power can be SIPHONED to better your chances of reaching your TARGET.
You wire in the vehicle's GLOWER INTESTINE to your now-active ANTI SPACECRAFT ECLIPSE BUSTER. You won't be able to stray far from the NEUROMOTIVE at this point, but hopefully you won't need to.
MOONLIGHT pools all around you, at your disposal you have the following:
(1) RUPTURED set of MILITARY-GRADE STRAWBERRY CHITIN
(1) Activated ANTI SPACECRAFT ECLIPSE BUSTER (LIMIT BREAK)
Just wanted to toss this out here since it crossed my mind and I didn't want it to go unheard by others. Especially my buddies who run venues (Specifically @pinxli in this instance) and those who might still be too intimidated to stop by them.
'I'm very glad I gave Glitter Hall a chance, because it's made things like this less scary', I thought to myself as I walked back through Central Shroud to get Nanari back home.
And it really has. I will still only really attend things run by people I know, but it's a start!
If you, reading this, are afraid to get out there and go to rp venues but really want to give them a try, look to your friends. If you see them hosting or attending, go with them if you have the courage to! I promise you it gets less anxiety-inducing as you go! And the friends, experiences, and memories are well worth it!
Trust me, this screenshot I took last year (With discord message accompaniment), compared to the one below it, speaks to my credit. xD
(Not mine, since I always forget to take my own screenshots, but this picture was too cute not to add as the example. They were all sync'd up. uwu)
Bit of a Music Business type question (If you're allowed to talk about it)- What's the process like for distributing music for a show like Hazbin vs distributing for TLT? More specifically, do you hold the same control with streaming services with the 'corporate' stuff, like, are you (Or Andrew) the one who release the songs onto services, or did you just pass off the files to someone at A24/Prime Video months ago and they take care of it all? My only experience has been with helping clients releasing songs via DistroKid and similar services as a recording/mixing engineer and I was curious how the big boys deal with that sort of thing.
On a somewhat similar note, I love how the songs from the first 4 episodes have lyrics sync'd to the music on streaming services, will that be coming for the other half of the songs?
Also just want to say how much I love what the sound editors for the show were able to do to add some flair to some of the songs, notably Mimzy's little whurrs in Hell's Greatest Dad & Carmilla's boot clanks in time with the music in Out for Love. So much talent in the crew!
Thanks so much! You are such a wonderful inspiration and great composer! (Sorry if I went overboard on the questions!)
Thanks for the compliments and I love a music business question! The songs for Hazbin are owned by A24 Music, both on the master and publishing. Not sure who they distribute with, but given that the songs are still on tiktok, I’m guessing not UMG lol
With TLT, we distribute at WMG, via 10K Projects, via OUR label Ghost Pixel Records. But it’s just distro - we own our own masters.
Re: synced lyrics, I’ll ask! And yes Hazbin’s sound editor Keith Thomas is amazing, I love the little touches he added to everything.
So guess I better be getting around to it, since now it's....suddenly over as quick as it came. So what are my thoughts?
It's.....fine? I guess? It's certainly not anything Earth shattering or groundbreaking it's just.....a show. Which I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing, considering how long it's been. But hey if people find it amazing, then fine....not saying you can't, this is only my opinion after all.
I think what bothers me the most is the tonal and pacing issues, everything just seems to rapid fire, one minute it's all serious and the next there's some joke coming up, mainly I guess in the 1st 4 episodes, the others I can't really recall. But it just was very....whiplashing I guess.
Another thing is, I feel like some stuff in this show was just ripped straight out of fans ideas/theories since the Pilot, some years ago. I mean in EP 4, there's clear dialogue that was ripped straight from a fanwork, along with some other stuff...either that or the writing is THAT predictable that people were able to figure stuff out YEARS in advance and if that's the case then just.....wow.
I also didn't feel anything for Charlie/Vaggie as a couple, for like the first 4 episodes Vaggie felt more like a bodyguard at worst and best friend at well....best. Yeah sure the later episodes, did at least give an indication that...yeah they are girlfriends, but I can see that this was really a kind of last minute thing. Maybe S2 will make it better, but I dunno....I mean the couple is there, I acknowledge it, but that's frankly it.
The songs....have to be honest, they were just there and gone for me, at least in the first 4 episodes. In fact in some songs I feel like they weren't sync'd properly? Or something? Because I had a hard time actually following what was being sung by the characters, it just seemed all over at times in some of these songs.
Now the later songs....again, were fine? Frankly the only one I remember at all that's in my head, that I feel many don't talk about or don't like is More Than Anything.
At least...in a vacuum it's fine, within the show it's.....ok, but again this is where the issue of pacing comes in. The pair haven't seen one another for a long, long time and they sing a song and suddenly their relationship is fine and Lucifer has hope, saying that his daughter turned his viewpoint around.
Now....I'm hoping that this just means, he's in support of HIS daughter, not being in support of the Sinners. Because it just seems really bizarre, that all it took to undo centuries of depression was....a song and reuniting with his daughter. Now I like their interactions/dynamics, it just again was blown by with the problems and issues.
I dunno, everything being blown by so quick is just...jarring and I get it, only 8 episodes and I feel like some say
"You have to look at it, as if it were a Musical."
Which.....just because it has songs in it, doesn't mean I should have to view it like that. Other shows have songs, doesn't mean I also have to view them as Musicals in order to rectify the tonal issues or pacing.
But sure, perhaps it's more due to the fact that it's only 8 episodes....but even then.
Anyway, so the characters are.....fine I suppose. Don't really have a whole opinion on them, because they are just there, some are interesting but I feel there needs to be a bigger push.
I think perhaps my favorite is and this might be an odd take, is Lucifer...now I know many don't seem to like his whole 'sad guy' routine and the backstory. Admittedly I'm not...too thrilled on it, but I'm still sort of open for his character and mayb in S2, things will be different.
Granted yes, I realize making the literal Devil, the embodiment of everything wrong with mankind, evil of evil into sympatric sad guy is....strange, but it's not like this is anything new. Well at least being sympathetic anyway, this has been done in other shows....granted ones with longer episodes that can actually flesh him out, but still.
I'm a little irked at Lucifer and Lilith not being together, buuuuut I'm hoping S2 they can get back together and I hope that Lilith just doesn't become a Stella 2.0. Granted since the start and seeing a bunch of fanworks with Lucifer/Lilith being stupidly in love and wholesome, perhaps that's skewed my perspective, but I also recall it was noted that they were heavily in love at some point....so I'm betting on in S2 some huge romance number for them...hopefully.
Now I see people go on about what S2 could entail since they blew Heaven away so quickly and yeah, I can agree doing that was kinda....sudden. But I don't think it'll be the Vees, they seem more like secondary antagonists more so.
In truth, I feel the S2 main big baddie will be this Root of Evil thing or what have you, that they'll all have to fight against. Which...could be interesting, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Anyway overall the show is...fine, again nothing huge or groundbreaking for me, there's issues with it like EVERYTHING...
Another lacklustre end to a shitty year.
Going to distract myself with weed and takeaway since my mood is too fucked for writing atm.
Was going to hang out with the snakes but 2/3 have sync'd their shed cycles and the remaining 1/3 doesn't feel like coming out and I barely know anyone locally these days and the few I do know are working over hogmany and new years.
I want to go back to past me who thought he was lonely in university or school, take him by the shoulders, look him in the eye and tell him he's fucking fine, and that he doesn't know true loneliness, not the soul-deep emptiness that devours you from the inside.
At which point past me would freak out and kill future me and hence creating a paradox and then we'd all be fucked because lets face it, if an older, more dishevelled version of you popped into existence, tried to grab you by the shoulders and get into your personal space, I dunno, I don't think past me ought to be blamed for going into fight or flight mode >.>.
Ach well. In seriousness though, happy hogmany and I hope yous are all having a better time of it than I am.
