El Siracusia era un antiguo barco de vela diseñado por Arquímedes en el siglo III a.C. Se dice que fue uno de los barcos más grandes jamás construidos en la antigüedad y que tenía una suntuosa decoración de maderas exóticas y mármol junto con torres, estatuas, un gimnasio, una biblioteca e incluso un templo.

They tilted their head slightly, watching Arlo with gentle eyes. 

Fannar: It might not work, that's why Mom is here, to make sure it doesn't end badly this time, but if it does, it gives us time to figure things out. -he didn't really want to give the promise he was about too.- and if you still feel this way after some years, I will let you go, let  you say goodbye to Syra properly, and take my heart back, and be with you until your gone. How does that sound?

Arlo stared at them in silence. It was an offer he did not expect. He knew Fannar would be stubborn, not give up on him. He had hoped by making them hate him, they would be able to let go but they did not. They did not give up on him and yet were willing to give them a chance, a tryout. He looked at Fannar's long pale fingers and licked his lips. Gently he untangled his hands from theirs and sat back.

Arlo:... Syracusia... My father was always one to give weird names to his kids... Did I ever tell you I was named after a hooker? That I can remember, but my sister is muddled to me. Do you see how... insidious the Rot is? -He sighed- 

Fannar: You did mention that yes, your father does have a strange idea of what to name their children. 

Arlo: You think I am worth saving... If... If I accept this deal... will you be happy? And... if after this… tryout, I decide I want to give you back your heart... Will you accept it? Will you accept if my mind doesn't change? If I still feel I don't deserve to exist? Will you accept if I decide I want to... go?

He remembered that Syra had said they found him in a bad condition, which he assumed would be because of said punishment. For Emil to feel redeemed.. well for all he had done, would one ever?

Emil watched over Flynn and sighed. Looking down at the trinket. A small smile crossed their lips as Syracusia had found a way to bring them her gift. To think that the trinket she made for them to find their way, a gift they had rejected would come to them guiding their hope. 

Emil: This isn't the best place to speak of this. Come inside. I don't have much but I do have tea...

Emil made their way in, motioning Flynn to follow. He went to a small kitchen and dining area with only the essential amenities. They motioned Flynn to sit and started on the tea. Despite its bareness, there were a lot of books and plants in the house and it was relatively clean though quite broken up.

Emil: I am sorry it is weathered. I was trying to fix it.

The Syracusia was a ship designed by Archimedes for Hiero II of Syracuse. A sort of ancient Titanic, sources describe it as having a garden, a library, a temple, a gymnasium, and guard towers. Once built, it was so large that Hiero realised that very few harbours could hold it. It was renamed the Alexandria and sent to its namesake port as a gift to Ptolemy III, whereby it was lost to history. https://ift.tt/2RJwhLF

Archimedes

Archimedes (l. 287-212 BCE) was a Greek engineer and inventor who is regarded as the greatest mathematician of antiquity and one the greatest of all time. He is credited with a number of inventions still in use today (such as the Archimedes screw) and is referred to as the father of mathematics and mathematical physics.

Συρακουσία: Η «πλωτή πολιτεία» της αρχαιότητας

Συρακουσία 1798 – Φανταστική αναπαράσταση του πλοίου «Συρακουσία» κατά το 18ο αιώνα. Πηγή εικόνας:el.wikipedia.org Στα μέσα του 3ου αιώνα π.Χ., ο τύραννος των Συρακουσών Ιέρωνας ο B', ανιψιός του Αρχιμήδη, θέλησε να βοηθήσει τις πληγείσες, από λιμό. περιοχές της Ρώμης και Αλεξάνδρειας, προμηθεύοντας τες με μεγάλες ποσότητες σιτηρών. Όμως, επειδή η απόσταση μεταξύ Συρακουσών και Αλεξάνδρειας ήταν μεγάλη αλλά και λόγω του «ανταγωνισμού» των Ελληνιστικών πόλεων περί των τεχνολογικών επιτευγμάτων και καινοτομιών, έδωσε εντολή να κατασκευαστεί ένα πλοίο, το οποίο θα ήταν αρκετά μεγάλο, ώστε να χωρέσει αρκετά μεγάλες ποσότητες σιτηρών αλλά να ήταν και σε θέση να αμυνθεί σε περίπτωση πειρατικών επιθέσεων και να είναι συγχρόνως υπερπολυτελές. Αποτέλεσμα ήταν να κατασκευαστεί και να ναυπηγηθεί ένα πλοίο εντυπωσιακό και μοναδικό για την εποχή εκείνη, η «Συρακουσία», δλδ. η κυρία των Συρακουσών, το οποίο ήταν ταυτόχρονα εμπορικό, επιβατικό και πολεμικό. Η μοναδική περιγραφή του πλοίου σώζεται από τον Μοσχίωνα. Το μήκος του πλοίου ήταν μεγαλύτερο από 80 μέτρα και το πλάτος του περί τα 35 μέτρα. Στην κατασκευή του, που κράτησε 1 έτος, χρειάστηκε ξυλεία όση για την κατασκευή 60 τριηρών(!) και χρησιμοποιήθηκε σκοινί από την Ισπανία, πίσσα από την Γαλλία, ξυλεία από την Αίτνα. Χρησιμοποιήθηκαν υλικά από όλον τον γνωστό, τότε, κόσμο ενώ ο Ιέρωνας δεν ήταν φειδωλός με τα χρήματα για την κατασκευή του. Η επιδίωξη του Ιέρωνα ήταν να ξεπεράσει κάθε επίτευγμα στη ναυπηγική και γι΄ αυτό επισκεπτόταν καθημερινά το ναυπηγείο, προκειμένου να παρακολουθεί τις εργασίες. Όταν ολοκληρώθηκε μεγάλο μέρος των εργασιών του πλοίου, ο Ιέρωνας διέταξε την καθέλκυση του. Η μεταφορά του στη θάλασσα ήταν αναγκαία. Για τον σκοπό αυτό χρησιμοποιήθηκε μια σπουδαία επινόηση του Αρχιμήδη «ο μοχλός». Η Συρακουσία καθελκύστηκε ημιτελής, με τη βοήθεια του μοχλού, που είχε τη δυνατότητα να ανεβάσει το νερό αποτελεσματικά.  

Πηγή εικόνας:el.wikipedia.org   Το πλοίο είχε τρία καταστρώματα και 20 σειρές κουπιών: Στο ανώτερο κατάστρωμα ήταν τοποθετημένες πολεμικές μηχανές (καταπέλτες, βαλλίστρες, χελώνες, πύργοι, άγκιστρα κ.ά.) και φρουρείτο από ισχυρό σώμα στρατιωτών. Στο μεσαίο κατάστρωμα είχε τα επίσημα διαμερίσματα( 30 τετράκλινα) , πολυτελή λουτρά,  έναν ναό της Αφροδίτης στην οποία ήταν αφιερωμένο το πλοίο, γυμναστήρια, βιβλιοθήκη και άλλες εγκαταστάσεις ψυχαγωγίας και αναπαύσεως. Στο κατώτερο κατάστρωμα, βρίσκονταν όλοι οι βοηθητικοί χώροι και για τους υπηρέτες, αποθήκες εφοδιασμού, αντλιοστάσιο, δεξαμενές νερού, στάβλοι για τα άλογα, εργαστήρια, φούρνοι, μύλοι και διάφορα άλλα. Αυτή, η «πλωτή πολιτεία», ήταν ιδιαίτερα δυσκίνητη, λόγω του μεγέθους και δεν υπήρχε στη Μεσόγειο κάποιο λιμάνι να το δεχτεί. Η «Συρακουσία» έκανε ένα μοναδικό ταξίδι, από τις Συρακούσες στην Αλεξάνδρεια το 240 π.Χ, όπου ο Ιέρων έστειλε ως δώρο το πλοίο στον Πτολεμαίο Γ' γεμάτο σιτηρά, αφού το μετονόμασε σε «Αλεξάνδρεια». Το συγκεκριμένο πλοίο αποτέλεσε το θαύμα της ελληνιστικής ναυπηγικής και απτή απόδειξη της παγκόσμιας πρωτοπορίας της ελληνικής ποντοπόρου Ναυτιλίας από την αυγή του Πολιτισμού έως σήμερα. The moment she burst into the room, both Fan and Vy got up. Vy didn’t have time to react before the girl had pounced on Fannar, hugging them so tight they lost balance. They tensed at her touch but didn’t push her away.

Syra: You came! You came to help! Fannar! You came!

Fan: I promised… -they gently brushed her hair as Vy watched them.- You got taller.

Syra smiled gently, brushing their hair.

Syra: You look well.

Vy looked at the girl.

Vy: A dwarven star.

Syra: What?

Vy: You’re a small sunlit dragon.

Syra giggled, still holding Fannar’s hand, a hopeful smile on her lips.

Syra: No. You got that wrong. My dad’s the dragon. I’m just Syra. Or Syracusia, like the ship, not the city!
