#THE AIRBENDERS COME BACK FOR THE FINAL BATTLE

Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was the only time in the show where one of the main trio interacted with one of the forge master duo.
And, I gotta admit, this was one of the things that disappointed me in the show.  As much as I love this series, I do wish these two storylines had converged in the end.
Like I really thought there would come a point when the vampire sisters invaded Wallachia and Sypha and Trevor would encounter Hector and realize he was an unwilling participant.  Similar to the scene we got with Isaac, Hector would say he couldn’t help them because of the blood ring restraining him.  And with all the fighting they’d been through and Trevor just being straight up done with everyone and their mother, I think he would have just handed Hector a knife and said, “You have two options.  You’re either our ally or our enemy.  Cut that ring off and help us or I’ll kill you.  What’ll it be?”  Harsh perhaps, but a big part of Trevor’s character is ‘do what’s necessary’ no matter the personal cost, so I don’t imagine he would have had much patience for Hector.  And that’s a difference between Trevor and Hector’s characters that I really need to go into in a separate character analysis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was my outlook when Season 3 ended though.  We did leave off with the return of Trevor’s dark view of the world in spite of the positive influence Sypha brought, and Hector realizing the consequences of trusting Lenore.  The series played Season 4 off pretty well in that Hector did have initiative was actively conspiring behind the scenes in order to give Isaac the opening he needed to take out Carmilla.  So I’m glad they didn’t write Hector off as ‘the helpless one.’
On another couple of notes, I kinda thought/hoped Sypha’s grandfather would make a reappearance in the final season and he would be the one to finish what the Ship Captain started in guiding Isaac along his journey of letting go of his anger and just living well, but that’s just me.
Back in Season 2, Isaac refers to Alucard as a spoiled child, and I really want to know what that was all about.  In the battle against the Generals and the Styrian soldiers, Isaac and Alucard seem to recognize each other, but did they have any interaction with each other before Lisa died?  Maybe I’m wrong and Isaac just thought, ‘There’s only one person that could be.’  I’ve talked about my theory that Alucard was a sheltered child and hadn’t seen much hardship in his life before his mother was killed, so I can see him and Isaac resenting each other out of emotional immaturity.  It would have been interesting to see that development in their characters.
But I get it.  The show only had a limited number of episodes and didn’t have time for all the tiny nuanced story arcs, and that’s fine.  An important element of writing is being aware of which parts are the essential and which are ones you need to cut.  If it were a longer running series like Avatar: The Last Airbender, then I would expect some more attention and care put into the subplots and side characters.  It’s a little touch and go with Striga and Morana’s relationship, Zamfir’s backstory wasn’t as developed as it could have been, and there are other elements that felt rushed.
Even so, I truly think the end result was fantastic.

The Boy in the Iceberg
Tumblr media
58 seconds in and I can already see why people say this show is gorgeous. Look at those colours! Although the double image around some of the line art is distracting.
Can water do that? Just have random fast currents in an otherwise pretty still ocean? Also, Catara couldn't have grabbed a spare paddle and helped? Actually they seemed screwed anyway. If they were going any faster they probably would have landed harder, or not on ice at all.
Judging by Sokka's lack of reaction to Catara's temper tantrum, I'd say she has that exact rant at least three times a week.
Tumblr media
It's a face!
Maybe the giant orb created the current to summon them there?
Catara has no self-preservation instincts at all. Giant glowy orb washed up in front of you, don't poke it!
Tiger seals.
Tumblr media
Solitaire. Neat.
Tumblr media
That haircut is not good. Also a very unique choice for a voice. Wait this is Zuko? The guy everyone's obsessed with?
I love Appa already.
"this is Catara, my flying sister." A man after my own heart.
They really would have been stuck without Aang to offer a ride. What was their plan to get home?
Zuko is a prince? Hunting the avatar to reclaim his honour. Not sure how those two go together but ok. I guess 100 years ago the avatar stole a time-travelling Zuko's honour.
Appa can swim through the night? Why does he have six legs?
Tumblr media
I didn't know this was a dream sequence at first and I was wondering where Sokka and Catara were. For future reference: dreams are brown.
Aang should have frozen to death by now. That's nowhere near enough clothes. And Catara can't be only just noticing the blue lines now.
Seems like the village has hit a rough patch.
If this is how catara reacts to a bald child, she's gonna spontaneously combust the first time she meets a teenage boy who isn't her brother. And how is an air bender going to teach her water bending?
Between the Appa snot and the watchtower gag, I sense Sokka will become the butt of many jokes.
Tumblr media
You know, if you want him to actually learn, maybe tell him what he did wrong rather than reciting philosophical stuff and then shooting fire at his face? His presumably scarred face? Scarred presumably by fire? Kudos to Zuko for not flinching.
Is there a stick in Zuko's hair that's supporting it upright or does his hair just do that? Does Zuko have Pippi Longstocking hair? Speaking of hair, why does Catara have her hair like that? Surely that gets in the way of seeing stuff? It does look good when her hood is up though.
Good sneaky exposition dump Zuko. Didn't notice it until I thought about it after.
Tumblr media
There's something hilarious yet tragic about Sokka spouting the wartime equivalent of live laugh love quotes and losing the battle with potty breaks. He has no idea what he's talking about but he believes in what he's saying so much.
Did Aang spend an hour in there?!?
Tumblr media
So pretty.
Tumblr media
Appa has six legs and penguins have four wings. Is the rule in this show that animals have 50% more appendages?
Last airbender smothered by penguins, more at 11.
"I haven't done this since I was a kid!" "You still are a kid!" That line feels like something that's going to come back.
Was the whole 'being a bender is showing no fear' or however that line went actually about bending, or do you really just want to explore the ship, Aang?
Tumblr media
Gerbils at the south pole?
Would the fire nation send people back to rig a lost ship or are all fire nation ships rigged at all times and the crews are just used to working around the traps? Actually that would be a great way to catch spies.
I would jump to brain-damage induced amnesia from being trapped in an iceberg for a few hours before I'd ever think of a century long cryo-sleep. "it's the only explanation." Really?
Tumblr media
All of these backgrounds are so pretty.
Air bending gets you some serious air. Those hops are stupid big, even accounting for cartoon physics.
I really like the end credits music. And according to the credits, I've been mispelling Katara's name this whole time.
Some final thoughts:
Katara (with a K) is too idealistic and trusting and Sokka is too cynical and suspicious. A perfect sibling pair. Also I love Sokka's sense of humour.
I like Aang's specific flavour of goofiness. He seems secure in himself and genuine. He has attention issues though.
Appa is a sea bison actually. Common misconception.
I like that they introduce the antagonist like 10 minutes into the first episode, but they're going to have to flesh him out way more before I read Zuko as anything other than an asshole. Also the voice is going to take a while to get used to. It's not that it doesn't fit the character design, it's just that I've never heard an actual human talk like that naturally. It's kind of muppet-like. Maybe he damaged his throat when he got that scar?
The voice acting is just superb. Even single lines like Gran Gran have distinct character. I did have to rewind a couple of times to catch what the old man with Zuko was saying.
The shading on the snow, the clouds and the skies, it's all so beautiful. You could watch this episode on mute and still be satisfied.
Katara is the only waterbender in the whole south pole, Sokka is the only man in the whole village, and Aang is the only air bender in the whole world. Gonna be a lot of lonely kids in this show. I sense a theme. I bet Appa is the only sea bison too.
Sokka is my favourite so far, but I think Aang is going to grow on me. Katara is a little bit too much of a Little Sister (TM) and Zuko just feels flat. But that just means more room to grow for both of them as characters. Of course Appa reigns supreme. I hope there's more of him in the next episode.
Even though this was half of a two-part episode, the cut off didn't feel abrupt. Maybe not a full self-contained story, but they left off at a perfect place.
Rereading this before posting, I asked a lot of quetsions. That's good! So many hooks to get me into the show, all in the first episode. I'm looking forward to the next one.

What are your top ten favorite scenes in Avatar the Last Airbender?
Hello again!
Ok… so ummm… they are in no particular order:
1. The last Agni Kai of course: The music, colors, emotions, the rise of one sibling & fall of another. I adored the red vs blue & of course the whole ‘self sacrificing Zuko’ lol
2. “get out of the bisons mouth Sokka”: It was just so funny to me Zuko was already done with everyone shit and he JUST joined the gaang imagine if he has joined season 1 hahah.
3. Zuko swimming into the NWT: because like…. You fucking idiot.
4. Anytime aang went into the avatar state (esp in season 1): he was such a goofy child then he would start to glow & there was so much power inside him idk I thought it added to his character a lot and reminded people that this kid is the fucking avatar
4. “Come back when the good is on the outside too”: or however the quote goes when iroh came to get the gaangs help to save Zuko and Sokka once again was just like nahhh fuck that guy. (This also goes along with the Sokka wanting to leave Zuko to die in the snow - I just love he wasn’t having any of zukos shit)
5. Zukos gay fire breath and sokkas bi awakening: because for an early 2000s show that was hella gay
6. Zuko blue spiriting to save aang: it was moment I think I started to like Zuko haha.
7. When the gaang was training for the final battle with Ozai & they were all fighting together & at the end Sokka and Zuko were pretty much like you gotta kill the fire lord aang & Sokka sliced the melon head in half; (toph being the melon lord was epic too)
8. Sokka Ice dodging a bato: idk that was such an important moment for Sokka & he deserves to feel important and have a male figure invest time into him so hell yeah Bato.
9. It’s a tie between Sokka telling toph boomerang isn’t coming back & toph saying “that’s a lot of fire isn’t it?”: the seriousness of that scene and the way Sokka never stopped fighting & how he would have held onto toph as long as he could - it was such a powerful moment (& then of course Suki saved the day!!)
10. Last but not least the kyoshi warriors training with Suki whooping Sokka into shape! Suki is one of my favorites and she is both firm and gentle with Sokka which I think is fun! (& then Zuko comes to burn everything down and Sokka gets to fight with the uniform on haha!)
11. Because fuck it, any scene with Zuko & Jet interacting - it’s like two scenes, one when they kissed on the ferry, and then their major break up with swords. That’s how it happened don’t argue with me.
Thanks for the ask, I probably have some other favorites but this is what popped into my head hah.

Nitpick November
Underutilized family & civilians Day 9
This will contain mild spoilers for Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood & Mha. Avatar the last Airbender gets mentioned, but I don't really go into it. This is a long one. I am very proud of myself for it.
We are told in the early volumes that Jaune has 7 sisters, and we have only met 1 of his sisters. This was a waste of opportunity. We don't really have firm civilian characters that we actually know. All of them are one-time meetings, and utterly racist to the point you can't even feel sad when they die.
When Ironwood in vol 8 tries to leave Mantel or later blows it up the show makes it such a big deal. Our heroes are always telling us it’s wrong to abandon them only to have every scene be them drinking tea while Civilians are dying or having them complain about saving them the moment they begin. And then when they die due to our heroes' failure we are told it's fine and they didn't matter only for the show to ask us to care about them again.
I'm not saying they need to do something big, but I think of shows like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Mha, ATLA, and Genshin for example. The civilian characters aren't a big focus in the shows or game, but they're memorable.
They give life to the show and make you care about them. They also come back for big moments, showing how the characters influence change them. In doing so, cause them to help change/assist others civilians and/or help the main character when they are in need.
Fullmetal Alchemist does this best as I always think about Rosé Thomas. She is changed by the brothers. She then becomes the lead help in rebuilding her home.
Tumblr media
We have Winry parents who help the Ishvalan citizens and save Scar– who brought change in Ed and Al– which in turn caused him to change through meeting Winry + Miles, a fellow Ishval. Plus, his connection with his people is why we understand his actions. By the end, he works to bring Amestris and Ishval together.
Tumblr media
Then we have Mei leaving with Envy, and the people of Youswell offering her supplies for her journey home shows again why we should care about the people. We have the town of Rush Valley that teaches Winry better ways to make her automail and has Ed and AL view on life reinforce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have Mustang group, Ishvalan, and the people of Briggs. Who gives their lives to fight in the final battle. We have old Greed group that lets us know about complete Chimera and humanize him for us when he joins the team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's just naming a few. I could go on, but all that matters is that they matter. We are shown why they matter. The show wouldn't work without them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Mha Midoriya helps Koda, who helps him in his darkest time. The Ordinary Woman that Midoriya helped by putting an umbrella over head who then also helped him and the man we met at the very beginning who told Midoriya he could achieve his dream and also help him by convincing the people to accept them into the school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have the kids that Todoroki and Bakugou reach the hearts of. While they aren't capable of helping in the big battle, they remind the audience of the impact they made and why we side with the class 1a.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also have the two female news reporters who came back for the final battle. We have the Woman Moko Tamashi, who All Might saved, cleaning his statue, giving him hope during/still ongoing darkest time. This is not even going over the class 1a family or even the characters from the movies that came back to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, the civilians aren't perfect. Something Rw//by tries to do but fails. We see the negative impact they give the villains, explaining why society needs to change.
For instance the civilians not helping Tenko during his time of need, causing him to be taken by All for One, who proceeds to abuse and groom him. Or Toga, whose parents represent how society is unwilling to be kind to those different and try to force them to conform to their views. Plus, the Quirk counseling spreads that harm. Twice while I can't remember the moment it has to do with the way the cops talk about him.
Dabi, I'm going to need to see the end before I give my thoughts. His issue is more family oriented, but they do have a moment with him bringing up his classmates' talks about being a hero. And then there is the reaction to learning about endeavor abuse. They are written to be more against him (which makes sense when you are considering where the story is taking place. It is seen as wrong to disturb the peace.) than endeavor, so I'll need to see how it ends before giving my opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike in Rw//by, we are just told of the impact of the huntsman but never shown it. Mainly by Hazel to justify why he works for Salem and why Ozpin is bad. We never really see the harm with Huntsman society made. We don't have a moment where any character has to come to terms with how hazel puts it seduced by tales of heroism. We get nothing of Hazel sister, nothing of the children who died in Oz cause against Salem. The closes is Summer but even then she a nothing character only now being giving screen time.
At the end of the day MHA wouldn't work without them. The civilians are needed to bring life to the world. They show you the impact that hero society has on the people. And by making the civilian matter when MHA began to focus on countless unnamed character we never met we feel the impact because it put in the effort to make them matter.
Tumblr media
And everyone has talked about Atla. So I don’t think I need to go over it and I don’t know enough about Genshin to make a clear point but what little I do know is that each nation has their own style. You see it best in Furina demo video where she is swinging. If you pay attention each time it changes color she represents a different Archon. The civilian change clothes for each Archon shown.
Tumblr media
And I also know they spend time with the Npc letting you get to know them. The best example is the first arc in Inazuma. After refusing to help Inazuma, Ayaka has the traveler talk to the people who had their vision stolen. This is just one of the many way that they are humanize.
These are the ones I remember most. I know there are even more shows that do it well, like adventure time, fairy tail, one piece, Naruto maybe, and maybe Yona of the Dawn do it as well, I think.
We have no real face for the Civilian. The few character you think of when talking about the impact the main character give just doesn't exist. Every time they had the chance to hang out and developed the Civilian characters the writers just didn't.
We didn't have to spend all that time in that house back in vol 5. We could have had episode with the Main character hanging out with Civilians. Those Civilian could be the dead huntsman family. So we have a emotional connection to the people Hazel, and the Headmaster killed. It could build up Hazel issues or whatever. Can you tell I don't like Hazel.
We could of had them hanging out in Vale before everything went to hell. Watch civilians we gotten to know better dying would really make the character choosing to keep fighting so much stronger.
They also had vol 8 during the side mission. They could have spent that time letting us care about them. But they don't. The main character don't change them and they don't change the main characters.
I don't know if their going to do a big thing where the npc are like "We sided with you!" "I'm alive because you!" and whatever. But it won't mean much because their faceless people.
Anyway I forgot what my nitpick was. It was probable about how the face could have been the characters family and how Pyrrha family needed more of a role. I'm going to start on the next one.

Good answers! Got some more if that’s ok?
1: you mention in a earlier post that they like avatar, what type of bending would the duo use?
2: let’s say at school, they was asked what type of superpowers would they want to have? What power would they choose?
3: what’s their New Year’s resolution?
4: in a battle royale, between the members of starknights & titans of tomorrow, who would be the last one standing? I’m gonna say Chris XD
5: what gifts did Chris & Jake give to their families on Christmas Day?
6: what’s their role during the holidays? Like being a cook, wrapping presents etc…
Have a Very Merry Christmas @gothicghost2000
1) I can see Chris being a Water bender as his personality undergoes a positive change that flows with the currents of life as it has been for the last half a decade. Meanwhile, because of his free spirited attitude and joyful outlook on life in spite of any sort of hardships he can come across and his value on all life, Jake can be an Airbender.
2) This is a relatively easy question for them, so easy they wind up making three to five page essays about their superpowers they choose regarding their benefits, uses, and many other coolness factors in demonstrating how much they love it, especially power they actually legit have unbeknownst to their teachers. Chris can pick Flight while Jake selects Enhanced Strength.
3) Chris: No more Shampoo or Hair Dye pranks on Conner….though Perfume Pranks are Still on the Table
Jake: Not to blame himself for cases, whether in school or especially as as superhero, when things go wrong bits it’s not his faulty ultimately. Also, being less nervous around Meredith when they hang out
4) That’s very much the case though as with any wrestling match, it’s far from an easy battle. Especially for Chris as almost the vets second the bell rings, since it was every man for themselves, almost all the others rushed to try getting Chris right out of the ring, only being stopped once Jake started going after Bobby and Irey. From there, one by one, the competitors fell out of the ring until finally it was between Chris and Mar’i. Jake offered to help from outside but Chris adamantly tells him to not interfere, ultimately coming out on top via Mar’i missing her aim with a super kick
5) Chris;
- He got Lois and Clark brand new notebooks, pens, a Diamond ring for Lois and new glasses for Clark
- Conner got a brand new leather jacket with some Bi Flag patches and saying stitched on the back on top of his S Shield, “Family Matters, They’re S Tier”
- Kara was given a brand new small jacket for Streaky which has colors that match her hero outfit and a new shiny red cape
- Finally but certainly not least, Jon was given a brand new chemistry set complete with a lab coat, gloves and goggles for any fun safe experiments he can conduct
Jake;
- For Dick, Jake manages to track down entire textbooks about circus history and also some Robin Hood
- Kory received a photo album comprised of the happier memories she has with her parents, Galfore, Kom, Ry, and her Planet
- He also gave Mar’i a brand new blanket he sewed along with Alfred. It’s a thick Cotton cloth with Pink threads and imprinted with blue and white stars
- Finally for his beloved Uncle Tim(my) Drake, a rare Five Foot Tall Crocky Plushie, cause he knows his beloved Uncle basically worships that Dancing alligator without any doubt
6) Chris aids Martha and Kara in the kitchen for preparing the dinner, being in charge of the side dishes including mashed potatoes and steaming the vegetables while also prepping the table for the whole family to sit down once it’s all ready
Then there’s Jake who helps place all the decorations on both the Christmas tree and all throughout the apartment, following Dick’s instructions on where everything should go just case they want to spice it up from last year. He does so while Kory and Mar’i handle other parts of the place. On Christmas Day itself, Jake also handles the music

Yeah, of course! We’ll do a lot better than last time, I promise. *Flowey feels an even greater attachment to Chara now, after hearing that specific deal of their mother starving them as punishment. Nothing like that should ever happen to them again. To go along with the soul-amplified empathy for Chara’s situation, Flowey also feels vengeful and proud even, to have killed their mother.*
*Flowey burrows back to Kara, unsurprised by the commotion not only because he was warned in advance, but also because it’s just a common event at this point for physical fights to break out. He doesn’t bother to step in yet though, since everyone else seems to have it covered. He stays at the ready just in case.*
Jeez, what do people have against you, Kara? You’re like a battle magnet. I think you should run from the battle this time since you’re already hurt. Undyne will have the anon distracted for a while.
(Kara) " I guess the more people know me, the more people hate me. Luckily, my arm will improve soon enough if I replace it with a mechanical arm." (Dess) "I didn't promise that. Kara gives Dess the side eye. But we do have the tech. You will still be technically different, though. It might even be able to control from others." (Undyne) "While fighting I never thought an Airbender was real since Alphys told me anime was fake. Anyway, I can't fight alone for much longer." Kara swings their sword at them and,
Tumblr media
(Kara) "I guess that's a win?" (Sans) "You didn't die." (Kara) "True." Everyone gets an alert on their phones except those who don't live in this universe. There's a news article. (News) "Today, we're finally revealing that Asgore will be tried in court for the murder of 6 kids in a few weeks. Now, if the people think Asgore should be found unjustified in those killings, the penalty will be no less than death. If found justified, then no penalty shall be placed. If it's not a unanimous vote in the jury, it'll be up to the Prime Minister. If you remember the laws, you might realize that the death penalty is strictly prohibited. However, this does not apply to monsters since they don't have similar rights. Thank you for listening, and keep notified to see more about this case." (Dess) "Starts laughing Wow, this is hilarious now, just how much evil is in humanity. Using the death penalty? PFFT, and they call America evil. I wish all humans would just kill each other already! It's obvious total extinction will come when they all A-Bomb themselves anyway. Why can't I kill them?" (Kara) "Smacks Dess in the face. Listen here, you little shit. Humans, I'll admit, are sometimes evil. But you want to kill them all? What the hell is wrong with you? I thought you were a good monster. At least that's how you reacted to Noelle and…" (Dess) "NOELLE'S DEAD!!! I say those who are dead don't care anyway." (Kara) "Wait, has all this backlash and anger been because you miss Noelle?" (Dess) "What? No, I'm fine. I'm just a jerk to everyone I meet." (Kara) "It's okay if you are sad. Can you let it out to me?" Dess looked in the opposite direction, fighting back tears. (Kara) "You know, I remember when we all used to go to ICE E's Pizza's. We all used to sit down and talk. Remember what you did when Noelle got scared because the ICE E's mascot came through." (Dess) "I would hold her in my arms. I would say, 'Shh, it's okay, he won't hurt you,' and she'd be happy. She couldn't hold it in and cried. Kara, Sniff I miss our childhoods. I miss when we used to be friends and be happy together. I miss my dear father. I miss my little sister. I even miss my Mom. I've tried to start a new life with all these people, but they're never as good as us. And seeing you with Flowey shows we are about as far apart as ever. You have friends and no longer need me nor love me." (Kara) "Hugs Dess Listen to me. It doesn't matter if we're friends, lovers, or acquaintances. We make our lives better by being together. That's all that matters." They cry for what seems like forever until finally, they both stop. (Dess) "Alright, we can continue."

Here’s something I’d love to see you write:
Aang & Katara taking their child/children to the southern air temple so they can learn more about that side of their heritage.
Tumblr media
Old Halls, New Life (rated G)
The air was eerily still as they climbed down off of Appa, setting foot on the stone balcony of the Southern Air Temple for the first time since the war. Katara hardly dared to breathe, lest she disturb the quiet. Aang’s face was unreadable. He stood still as the statue of Gyatso that she knew was just out of sight, staring blankly ahead. Katara bent the sweat off her palms and wondered if he was trying to mentally prepare himself for the carnage that was still to come. She wasn’t sure either of them would ever be ready.
A lifetime later, Aang finally turned his face to her, and her heart broke at the sadness and guilt that were heavy in his eyes. He offered a small smile and held his hand out to her. She took it, walking towards the front door of the temple, hoping he couldn’t feel her own nerves. He had put off his own healing for so long, for the sake of healing the whole world. He needed her to be the strong one, right now.
The moment seemed too heavy for words, so she squeezed his hand as they approached Gyatso’s statue. He returned the squeeze just before releasing her hand to bow to his old master. Katara mirrored his action, offering her own respects to the man who had been Aang’s biggest support in his old life. When he moved forward to airbend the lock and pushed open the heavy wooden door, it looked just like it had the last time they were there.
Katara had always felt a sense of awe at the Avatar, but now, knowing Aang the way she did, having spent the better part of a year fighting a war alongside him and another year trying to restore peace… Now the Hall of Avatars hit her even harder. Each of these men and women had had a life. They had loved, and been loved. They had fought battles and kept the balance of the world, but they had also been human and felt the full depth of that human experience. They had laughed and felt loss and suffered illness…
Thinking of Aang’s statue in this very hall—sometime hopefully long, long in the future—she wondered what future generations would say about him. She wondered who had loved and lost these Avatars of old. How they had reconciled the Avatar’s humanity and their Spiritual duty.
After a moment of respect, and, Katara suspected, seeking wisdom from his past lives, Aang led Katara through the curtains he had found Gyatso’s body behind the first time they were there. She struggled not to gasp at the number of Fire Nation skeletons that littered the ground around Gyatso, shocking red armor still firmly in place, and she squeezed Aang’s hand again to remind him that he wasn’t alone. No matter how hard the task that lay ahead of them, she was always and forever by his side.
She saw Aang press his eyes shut. He squeezed her hand back in thanks, but tears still leaked down his cheeks and his chin was trembling. A year or two ago, she might have feared him slipping into the Avatar State, but now she just pulled him into a hug and they fell to their knees on the ground together.
“I miss them,” Aang croaked out some time later, once the wracking sobs subsided. “I miss them so much.”
Katara rubbed his back and kissed the tip of the arrow on his head, completely lost for words. What could she even say? She knew how deep the pain of missing her mother was, and she was just one person. Aang had lost everyone and everything.
“Thank you for coming here with me,” he mumbled into her shoulder. “I don’t know if I could have done this alone. The temple is so full of memories.”
“Share them with me?” she asked, hesitant but hopeful. Aang had shared many things about his people, but they were all more general ideals, histories, ceremonies, and occasional anecdotes. He didn’t often share his personal memories. It was like talking about them would force him to remember. That they had been real—that they had lived and that they had died horrible, unfair deaths.
But this time, Aang did share. Over the next days and weeks as he and Katara cleaned the temple to prepare it for the Acolytes, he shared many memories. When they carefully removed the skeletons near the airball court, he told Katara about a particularly competitive game of airball which had caused multiple injuries to him and his friends. When they cleaned the kitchens, he told her about the time he and his friends had stolen a bunch of fruit pies and hid them in the elder monk’s beds, earning them all extra chores for a month. When they scrubbed ash stains out of the classrooms, he told her how hard it had been to be the youngest in his levels; how he missed his friends when they’d advanced him over and over again.
As they carried skeleton after skeleton out of the tallest towers, he told her how bittersweet his tattoo ceremony had been. How excited he was to see his parents and his friends from the other temples and how proud he had been, but also how different he felt and how it was the beginning of him being ostracized from his friends. How much weight he already felt on his shoulders after that ceremony. How much heavier it had gotten since.
Aang shared his memories, and it brought so much life back to these empty halls. Katara smiled every time she walked into the kitchen now, picturing a small gaggle of seven-year-old boys sneaking out with their arms full of pie when the bakers weren’t looking.
“I know they’d be proud of you,” she said one morning while she was cooking breakfast. Aang had been silently chopping up moonpeaches beside her to make a pie of his own, still trying to perfect the “gooey center” Gyatso was always so good at. He looked up at her, startled, and almost dropped the knife.
“I know I’ve told you before,” she went on, “but the way you were able to end the war without taking Ozai’s life, and the way you’ve been bringing peace to all the nations over the years since the war ended… sharing your culture with the Air Acolytes and helping the world restore balance… I just know they would be so proud of you.”
Aang smiled sadly.
“I know you’ll always miss them too, but… they’re not gone. They live on in your stories. In this place. In the mischief you and Toph and Sokka get into all the time…” Aang looked affronted and she shoved his shoulder playfully. “Yes, I know you’re not just ‘going to the market’ when the three of you are gone for hours and only come home with a handful of vegetables and some mysterious sacks that clank.”
Aang full-on laughed then, possibly his first real laugh since they had arrived at the temple. He set the knife down and hid his face sheepishly behind his hands, leaning on his elbows on the counter.
“And one day,” Katara continued, blushing vibrantly, “they’ll live on in the next generation. In our kids. In the lessons you’ll teach them and the trouble you’ll get into together and the values you instill. Your people aren’t gone forever, Aang. I promise you that.”
Aang’s head snapped up to look at her so fast, and his face was filled with so many different emotions, but before she could truly look at him and figure out what he was thinking, he surged forward and kissed her.
Kissing Aang had always been one of her favorite things to do, but she had held back from kissing him on this trip, unsure of whether he wanted that sort of intimacy during such a difficult time. She had offered many kisses to his head or his cheek, and innumerable hugs where she had clung to him, and he to her, but hadn’t kissed his lips since before they left Cranefish Town.
Now, though, as his lips moved fervently against hers, it seemed obvious that this was exactly what he needed, and she melted into him. He wove his hands into her hair—it always made her smile that he seemed to love her hair so much when he had none—and she clung to his back, eliciting a happy sigh from him.
The smell of their breakfast beginning to burn to the bottom of the pot startled them away from each other. Katara nervously tucked her hair back behind her ears as she stirred the rice mixture, but she could feel Aang still staring at her. When she scooped their breakfast into bowls and offered one to him, he was grinning besottedly. She couldn’t help but smile back.
“Thank you, Katara,” he said, pecking her on the cheek. “Thank you for helping me keep my people alive, and for reminding me that they never really left. I know their love lives on, but now their memory will, too, every time I tell their story.”
“I love you, Aang,” she said. “I hope that wasn’t too much… I just…”
“It was perfect,” Aang interrupted, placing a warm hand on hers and smiling. “It was exactly what I needed to hear.”

So, this turned out to be a doozy. What you see here is just the first of four ficlets which I combined into one fic, because I couldn't help myself. And this doesn't even cover what you actually asked for yet haha, but the rest will :) It's too long for tumblr so you can read the whole thing on ao3. I didn't do as much research as I probably should have for this, but there's a lot packed in here. I hope you enjoy the parenting segments, friend!

To Pass A Law ||Zukka Fanfic||
https://archiveofourown.org/works/52683088 by andrewslora0 This takes place right after the comics and one year after the final battle. Fire Lord Zuko is almost assassinated, which causes Team Avatar to come back to the Fire Nation to help smooth things over and to find out who is behind the attack. Many people are angry with the world leaders and their politics, and especially with the Fire Nation. During all of this Sokka and Zuko become very overprotective of each other taking extreme measures to protect one another. Meanwhile everyone in Team Avatar is forced to question their ideologies as well as find out some secrets which are exposed in Legend of Korra. During the search for the criminals Zuko and Sokka grow super close, overcoming many obstacles in the way. But will their luck continue? Zuko already has the entire world questioning the Fire Nation's leadership style and surely the law he eventually decides to pass will definitely put him, Sokka, Team Avatar, and the rest of the world's leaders in great danger. Can they overcome this too? Or will they be forced back in the shadows to obtain world peace? Both Sokka and Zuko need to decide on how much they are willing to sacrifice for each other and their decision will impact the fate of the entire world. Fictober 2022 Day 22
Prompt: 26 - "I'm doing it, shut up."
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Rating: Gen (past and canonical character death)
Relationships: N/A
Characters: Zuko, Katara, Aang, Iroh, Azula, Sozin, Roku, Ta Min, Zeisan, Lu Ten
Note: Zuko is haunted by the ghosts of his past literally.
For as long as Zuko could remember he has been haunted. The first ghost he remembered was his ancestor's ghost on his mother's side. He rarely visited though. When asked why the ghost gave the response that he had other places to be which never made any sense. Then there was his wife Ta Min. Ta Min reminded him a lot of his mother. The only real difference was that she was willing to speak her mind. She had quite a bit of foul things to say to his father. Zuko often ignored them.
Fire Lord Sozin was another main presence in Zuko's life. Unlike the other ghosts in Zuko's life, he didn't get help from the dead Fire Lord. He reminded him too much of his father and Fire Lord Azulon to ever be comfortable talking to. The dead Fire Lord spent most of his time correcting Zuko which was practically always. Zeisan was another spirit that came on occasion. She was odd, unlike the other ghosts that wore fine clothes signaling them as high class of the Fire Nation she wore plain robed that didn't belong to the Fire Nation at all. The only clear sign of her high class was her features which matched that of the royal family and Fire Lord Sozin specifically. In many ways, she reminded him of the Fire Sages. She always talked about the spirits, and enlightenment, and talked in riddles. She only really showed up when he had a decision to make. Usually, Fire Lord Sozin will come right after her trying to sway him the other way.
When Zuko had brought this up to his mother at the age of 6 he remembered her getting a concerned look on her face. She told him to never mention or talk about it with anyone but her. He promised and has kept his promise to this day.
In all honesty, Zuko knew his cousin died long before the messenger hawk came. As that morning Zuko was awakened by the sound of his cousin's voice. At first, he thought that the battle was finally finished but when Zuko said that all he got was a sad look. Then the messenger hawk came and confirmed it. Lu Ten had died in the Battle of Ba Sing Se.
Then Fire Lord Azulon died. He was awoken by the now-dead Fire Lord raging. He called Zuko, his father, and Azula such awful things. For weeks all Zuko could hear was the angered ragings of the now-dead Fire Lord. After that time Azulon left him alone only sometimes returning to tell him how much of a failure that he is.
Zuko never saw his mother's spirit. He didn't know if that was a good or bad thing.
Then Zuko was banished. Ta Min and Lu Ten comforted him. Fire Lord Sozin looked at the boy writhing on the bed in pain with disappointment. Fire Lord Azulon laughed and told him he deserved it.
Lu Ten, Ta Min, and Zeisan tried to convince him to take a break. To rest and recover from his injury. The two Fire Lords said to push on past his injury. Show that he wasn't weak. That he was worth being the Crown Prince. To bring back his honor. So Zuko did as the two Fire Lords said. Every single time that Zuko was rude or disrespectful to his uncle he earned a slap on the back of the head, but Zuko ignored it just like he always did now.
Now he sat in the crystal chamber under Ba Sing Se with the waterbender present that accompanies the Avatar. Lu Ten leaned against one of the walls with Fire Lord Sozin growling and cursing Azula under his breath.
"Why did they throw you in here?" Katara demanded. Lu Ten chuckled.
"She certainly has a fire in her." Lu Ten commented. It normally would have earned the dead prince a glare but he didn't. Zuko didn't feel like trying to defend himself.
"Oh, wait, let me guess. It's a trap. So that when Aang shows up to help me, you can finally have him in your little Fire Nation clutches!" Katara continued as if there was no one that talked. Which to her there wasn't.
"How dare she say that. Burn her and make her learn respect to her superiors." Fire Lord Sozin snarled. Normally Zuko would have listened to his great-grandfather, but he couldn't bring himself to.
"You're a terrible person! You know that? Always following us! Hunting the Avatar! Trying to capture the world's last hope for peace! But what do you care? You're the Fire Lord's son. Spreading war and violence and hatred is in your blood!" Katara cried. Lu Ten flinched back at her accusation. The dead Fire Lord raged even more and if he could have fire bend as a spirit the cave would be covered in flames. Zuko turned to the waterbender.
"You don't know what you're talking about!" Zuko cried. How dare she make that claim. The Avatar was his only hope to return home to his family.
"I don't?" Katara exclaimed. Anger was clear in her voice. "How dare you! You have no idea what this was put me through!" Katara sat down and touches her necklace the same one that Zuko once used to track them down. "Me personally! The Fire Nation took my mother away from me." The girl began to cry. Lu Ten made a gesture toward her. Zuko honestly didn't know what to do.
"I'm sorry." Zuko said.
"How dare you apologize we are saving her from a difficult life. It's her people's fault that they fight against us." Fire Lord Sozin growled.
"That's something we have in common." Zuko admitted. This earned a small smile from Lu Ten. Fire Lord Sozin dismissed himself clearly seeing that the teen was not going to listen. Or perhaps his anger finally got the best of him. It could be either or a mixture of the two.
"I'm sorry I yelled at you before." Katara apologized. Zuko was honestly surprised by it.
"It doesn't matter." Zuko said
"It's just that for so long now, whenever I would imagine the face of the enemy, it was your face." Katara said. Zuko looked away and Lu Ten flinched. Of course, all she would see was his scar. The mark of his disgrace his dishonor his greatest shame.
"My face? I see." Zuko said. He touched his scar.
"She didn't mean..." Lu Ten started.
"No, no, that's...that's not what I mean." Katara said. She moved towards Zuko.
"It's okay. I used to think this scar marked me. The mark of the banished prince, cursed to chase the Avatar forever. But lately, I've realized I'm free to determine my own destiny, even if I'll never be free of my mark." Zuko said. Lu Ten smiled, pleased with the progress his cousin has made.
"Maybe you could be free of it." Katara said. Both princes looked at her in confusion.
"What?" Zuko asked.
"I have healing abilities." Katara said. This earned the waterbender a glare.
"It's a scar, it can't be healed." Zuko said. Karara held up a vial that seemed to contain something.
"This is water from the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole. It has special properties, so I've been saving it for something important." Katara said. She moved right in front of Zuko. It amazed him that she was offering this. They were enemies on two sides of the war. You weren't supposed to do this for your eneemy. "I don't know if it would work, but ..." Katara put a hand on his scar. A part of him wanted to pull away, but he didn't instead he closed his eyes. Then the wall burst open. Zuko opened his eyes and saw the Avatar and his uncle. He didn't understand, why would... "Aang!" She got up and hugged the Avatar. Zuko stood as well. Lu Ten's cold ghost hand landed on Zuko's shoulder.
Iroh rushes forward and hugs his nephew. Zuko remained ramrod straight and he glared at the Avatar. He was so close to his goal. He knew he had given up on trying to capture the Avatar and return home but could he really let him go?
"Aang, I knew you would come." Katara said. She gave the young Avatar another hug.
"Uncle, I don't understand. What are you doing with the Avatar?" Zuko said. He pointed at the Avatar. Lu Ten smacked him on the back of the head.
"Don't be so ungrateful, dear." Ta Min's voice said. Zuko didn't bother to turn around and look for her.
"Saving you, that's what." the Avatar shot back. Zuko growled and prepared to fight.
"So confrontational." Zeisan said. Iroh stepped in front of Zuko.
"Zuko, it's time we talked." Iroh said.
"And listen to my father please." Lu Ten pleaded. Zuko looked off to the side not wanting to see the Avatar and the Waterbender nor his uncle or the spirits that seemed to always surround him.
"Go help you other friends. We'll catch up with you." Iroh said. Zuko heard the footsteps of the two leaving them.
"Why, Uncle?" Zuko pleaded.
"You're not the man you used to be, Zuko. You are stronger and wiser and freer than you have ever been. And now you have come to the crossroads of your destiny. It's time for you to choose. It's time for you to choose good." Iroh said.
"And good is finally succeeding in bringing the boy down, you pathetic child." Fire Lord Azulon said.
"Zuko, dear, they helped you even when they had no reason to. You must return their kindness." Ta Min said in the voice that made Zuko want to lean into her.
"You traitor." Fire Lord Azulon snarled.
Then crystals imprisoned his uncle. Zuko jumped back with a cry. He got into a stance prepared to defend his uncle and himself. Then Azula entered alongside Dai Li agents.
"I expected this kind of treachery from Uncle. But Zuko, Prince Zuko, you're a lot of things, but you're not a traitor, are you?" Azula said
"Release him immediately." Zuko demanded
"It's not too late for you, Zuko. You can still redeem yourself." Azula said
"The kind of redemption she offers is not for you." Iroh said
"Listen to my dad." Lu Ten said.
"No, she is your way back to the throne. Use her." Zeisan said.
"Why don't you let him decide, Uncle?" Azula demanded. "I need you, Zuko. I've plotted every move of this day, this glorious day in Fire Nation history, and the only way we win is together. At the end of this day, you will have your honor back. You will have Father's love. You will have everything you want."
"Do what no one else in our family could do. Capture the Avatar." Fire Lord Azulon ordered.
"Zuko, I am begging you." Iroh pleaded.
"Listen to him." Ta Min said.
"Look into your heart and see what it is that you truly want." Iroh continued. Zuko wanted to pull out his hair. The spirits began to argue with each other about what he should do.
"You are free to choose," Azula said. She gestured at the two Dai Li agents. They earth bent themselves out of the cavern. Azula left following where the Avatar went. Where his chance went.
"Zuko..." Iroh started. Zuko then ran out to follow her.
"What are you going to do?" Ta Min asked.
"Help them." Lu Ten said.
"Take this chance," Zeisan said.
"Earn back your honor." Fire Lord Azulon said.
"Help bring back the balance of the world." His ancestor said.
"I'm doing it, shut up." Zuko snarled. The spirits finally fell silent. He knew what he had to do. He will bring back his honor.

Summary: Kya remembers that her father loved to dance.
Kya watched the vivid leaves dance in a circle on a gust of gentle wind. They were the colors of fall, the colors of the Air Nomads. Red spun in a wide arc, yellow twisting as if along the length of a temple's spire, and orange was caught in a never-ending spiral that spoke of pattering feet and carefree steps.
She was reminded of how her father loved to dance. He taught them all the steps of nearly two hundred years ago when there was no such thing as the lingering memory of a century-old war. He had friends in all four nations back then besides his own, he said. Earth Kingdom, Water Tribe, and even from the Fire Nation.
Kya recalled the first time she attempted the Camelephant Strut, a dynamic, precise dance move that required a certain confidence she did not quite have at the age of five. But in time she learned. She was not as good as her older brother, Bumi, who was a natural at all things nimbly artistic. At least, she was much better than her ironically stiff younger brother, Tenzin, who happened to be their family's only other airbender.
"C'mon Tenzin," their father would say in that playful way of his, "you can bend air, remember? You have to be like a leaf in the wind when you dance too."
Tenzin it seemed, had the talent and the spirit of an Air Nomad, but not the wonder of one. Bumi had gotten all of that instead. Kya supposed it was only fair, as he was the only one out of the three siblings that could not bend an element.
Kya saw dancing like the water she moved through her fingers. It flowed and it rained, ebbing through the current of someone's body until it burst forth like a waterfall of unadulterated energy.
Bumi saw it as fun. "Because it is, obviously," he had said when they were children. "What else can it be?"
He made a game out of it every time their father walked in unannounced.
"I challenge you to a battle!" Bumi had shouted. "A battle that will revolutionize the dance world!"
Their father laughed. "So, a revolution?" he had asked the first time. He played along easily.
"Yes!" Bumi had agreed. "A dance dance revolution!"
Kya wanted to smile as she remembered those times. She felt the quirk of it at the corner of her dry lips as the autumn air sapped the moisture away from her skin. Still, the smile did not come.
She longed for the dock at the base of their family's island where she could waterbend to her heart's content. She wished for the night to settle more permanently on the back of Republic City's horizon, but instead, dawn's pink line broke through the surface and interrupted what she wanted.
Everything should be dark, she thought. She dreaded the new day coming...the day when she would have to bury her father.
There was nothing left in her to give.
She had thought that she was taking it rather well. She did not have to bear the burden of being the last airbender like Tenzin, nor did she have to carry the memory of being the last to keep watch over their father like Bumi. Their mother stayed resolute and kept moving forward, but Kya saw the tremble on her lips and the tears that came in spurts when no one but them could see.
Kya was tired of being told advice she did not need or want from strangers and people she hardly knew. She patted backs and said, "It's all right," to friends of friends of friends. She thought that someone else might think that she was consoling them. In fact, all of the theatrics and condolences annoyed her.
She did not want to see so many people. She did not want them to see the kind of weakness she only allowed herself when the darkness crept in and the door to her room was shut.
She felt fine. Then, she did not. It was a cycle, a curse. She had lost enough and yet too much. She had thought that after living a year of constant uncertainty she was made of the same metal even Toph Beifong could not bend.
Yet, it was not a sense of hope or acceptance that she felt, but rather the unrelenting roll of an ocean's waves as she rode them upon every dip and every crash. Because life, it seemed, would keep going, nonetheless.
And as the sun finally rose, melting the night off the trees, she remembered herself and forgot herself all at once.
She stayed that day to listen to the speeches, the eulogies, the cries, and the laughs. All of them were for the great Avatar Aang, the last true airbender, the man who had saved the world after the longest war in history.
When eventually an air acolyte who had been one of the first to join her father's followers sat beside her, she realized the anger she felt.
"I saw you tapping your feet to the flute rhythm Bumi was playing," they told her. "That's the dancing your father loved."
Kya perked up. "Yeah, he loved dancing!" she replied. "Once in a cave—"
"You know one of the Northern Air Temple acolytes, Tashi, tried dancing Phoenix Flight once."
Her shoulders fell. The acolyte kept talking to her.
She was searching for her father in places he could never be, in people that pretended to be interested in bonding with her but never were. They were people that emerged from the woodwork with pitying smiles and half-cares who arrived before her because it was right, and it was good, and it was what should have been done.
But Kya looked and never found the dad she really wanted.
She took their flowers and handwritten messages to add them to the collection piled and knew it was not fair.

I just realised why I’m super extra pissed about The Owl House being canceled.
I was upset it got canceled to begin with but what really fucking pissed me off about it is that I personally think it was the series to come closest to being on par with Avatar The Last Airbender. No one can deny that ATLA is the best tv series, ever. Better than The Sopranos. By the way, anyone who says the sopranos is the best series obviously has never seen atla and will even go out of their way to say that they will refuse to watch a “kids cartoon.”
I truly believe that TOH would’ve been this generation’s ATLA. TOH has the suspense and arc on par with ATLA and the best parts of LOK. And no one can deny that ATLA has the BEST VILLAIN REDEMPTION ARC, EVER. Who else felt that relief and actual true joy when Zuko finally decided to be good on his own accord?
When Zuko freed Aang as the Blue Spirit, I was shocked and that moment made everyone wished he would switch sides.
When Zuko and Iroh joined team avatar briefly to fight Azula, it was magical. And when Katara offered to heal Iroh, I truly thought this was the moment they would join team avatar and that Iroh would be Aang’s firebending teacher. It wasn’t but that hope of them joining got even stronger.
Then when Zuko freed Appa, turned good, and CHOOSES to duel Azula, I was praying it would be Aang who would save him like how Zuko save Aang as the Blue Spirit. But Zuko betrays Iroh. He betrays Katara’s trust. Because of Zuko’s betrayal, Aang legit almost died. I lost nights of sleep because of this.
And finally, when Zuko confronts his father and tells him that he realised that his destiny was to teach Aang firebending and then SHOOTS THE FUCKING LIGHTNING back at his piece of shit dad and the episode ends with Zuko in that blimp following the gang… ORGASMIC.
And it wasn’t just that he became one of the heroes. It was that he’s trying to undo the pain and damage that his nation has caused over the 100 year war. He battles his own sister for the right to the throne. He doesn’t kill his father even though he could’ve. He finds his mother and even brings Azula along hoping that she too would also have closure (in the novel).
Zuko has the best redemption arc ever. The Owl House has that with Hunter. It’s unmistakable. The journey from villain destined for greatness to a torn and damaged being to finding his own way and believing in himself. The misplaced righteousness to clumsy awkwardness and the eventual dynamic of Hunter with the Owl gang is a joy to have witnessed. I just wished we could’ve seen Hunter get that closure he truly deserves. I wished we could’ve seen the series get an ending it deserves. TOH team did an amazing job developing the characters and story.

Fic authors self-rec! ✨ When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you’ve written, then pass on to at least five other writers (if you would like to)!
Thanks for the ask! It's taken me 3 days to answer because I've had job stuff to do, and it's also hard to pick my 5 favorite fics when I've been in several different fandoms in the past few years... In one sense, all my favorites right now are the ones in my current fandom -- they're the only ones I'm still emotionally invested in -- but I'll also pick out what I think are my best ones from my previous fandoms. In order from earliest to latest:
1. The Third Time. Fandom: MCU (Loki & Thor, Gen), rating: T, warning: Major Character Death. Summary: "It appears that, as they say on Midgard, the third time is a charm, eh, brother?" After the battle of Ragnarok, as Loki is dying -- for the third and final time -- he and Thor have a last conversation. The phrase "cats all the way down" is uttered, oddly enough.
This is the first fic I posted on AO3 back in 2015, and I still think it's one of my best-written. People also keep finding it and leaving nice comments, which is validating.
2. The Tree of Knowledge. Fandom: MCU (Thor/Loki), rating: E. Summary: "Loki kissed me. What in Hel was that about? was the first thought that entered Thor’s mind when he woke up. And I kissed him back." The day after Loki and Thor got stoned together and Loki kissed Thor -- purportedly just to prove a philosophical point -- Thor looks for an explanation from his evasive brother, and comes to realize that his own feelings for Loki are not what he had thought they were.
The second installment and "getting together" fic in the first of my long-running ship fic series (I guess I do this for my ship in every fandom?), Whatever is done from love. Gratuitous Nietzsche quotes are also part of my pattern.
3. The Hypothetico-Deductive Method. Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender (Aang/Katara/Zuko), rating: T. Summary: Uncle Zuko is visiting Air Temple Island, and 15-year-old Kya begins to suspect that Something is Going On between him and her parents, Aang and Katara. Tenzin is skeptical; Bumi is amused; and Kya decides to investigate and gather conclusive evidence that her suspicions are correct. Awkwardness, uncomfortable conversations, and amateur spy shenanigans ensue.
I think this is the best one from my relatively brief but strangely productive stint in Avatar: The Last Airbender fandom, which mostly happened while I was brain-foggy post-Covid in 2020. (I couldn't focus on reading or writing philosophy, I could barely even watch TV without having to rewind a lot because my attention kept wandering, but I was writing fic really fast.) As usual, it's part of my big interconnected series, The Three-Body Problem, but it can be read on its own.
4. Had we but world enough, and time. Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Garak/Bashir), rating: E. Summary: After attempting to destroy the Founders' homeworld in "Broken Link," Garak has been sentenced to six months in a holding cell on Deep Space 9. Julian continues visiting for their weekly lunch, and they are allowed a picnic in a holosuite during the hour that Garak is allotted for daily exercise. They get some (unauthorized) exercise, and Julian says something he's been meaning to say.
Not the first fic I wrote in my current ship series, The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, but the first big one, and still, I think, the best-written.
5. Stepping into the Rubicon. Fandom: DS9 (Garashir), rating: T. Summary: On the way back from the Gamma Quadrant following Enabran Tain's disastrous attempt to destroy the Founders' homeworld, Garak comes to Doctor Bashir's quarters complaining of a headache and ends up spending the night.
Another "getting together" fic as an early installment in an extended series. No Nietzsche quotes in this particular fic, but there is poetry.

Digimon Adventure (Blind Watch) - Episode 53
Ah yes, the cosmic-horror boss, classic. Very Earthbound of them (or like...a million other games. Parasite Eve comes to mind). I think the concept might be a little too abstract (a monster created from the dark energy of extinct digimon) but whatever. It almost seems like they’re going for an environmentalist message which is kind of weird for a digital world...
Digimon (?) introduced: Apocalymon
Notes:
-The surrealism and body-horror in this episode were nice, low on impressive animation, but it gets points for the creepy concepts/visuals. I kinda resent having to sit through like 3 minutes of straight digivolutions (AKA reused animation), but I guess that could also be seen as a “last hurrah” since this is the final-final battle.
-They mentioned the Ancient Dino region which I remember from the game! I guess it was in the Centarumon episode of the anime too, but I don’t remember them calling it that at the time.
-The fact that there were other “chosen children” before these kids feels like foreshadowing/sequel baiting. Very Avatar: the Last Airbender. It’s a writing style that could go on infinitely.
-The geometric part of Apocalymon’s design feels similar to a Neon Genesis Evangelion angel. I really like those kinds of designs where something looks so alien and incomprehensible. Kinda wish they didn’t stick a generic looking demon guy on top of it all lol. All the main villains have looked pretty samey. (Flamboyant and demonic men).
-I actually got into a debate on Facebook about this topic before (lol): whether or not endangered species should just be left to die because it’s the natural progression of things. I honestly still don’t know the answer, I think it’s too complicated to fully be on either side of the argument. It seems like it would be different in the digiworld though because there’s no pesky humans at fault, right?
-The kids dissolving into data was pretty unsettling and probably spooked some kids watching back in the day. It made me think of Mike TV in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Don’t really get how they’re going to un-digitize themselves, but it’ll probably be the power of friendship or something.
-I didn’t really need a closeup of Apocalymon’s writhing pelvis...
-Lol @ the parents still standing in the same exact spot they were before. I get that that’s intentional because of the time difference, but have they just been watching the kids’ whole adventure on fast forward up until now? It might be interesting if there was like an OVA or something from their POV
-I had to laugh when they showed the people in other countries watching the final battle. Imagine if you’re just chilling and then the end of the world comes along and the news is like “oh but don’t worry, some elementary schoolers from Japan are on the case!” Of course, as an anime fan I’d be like “sounds about right.”

MKX NPC Kombatants: Fujin.
Bio: The God of wind and fellow protector of Earthrealm alongside Raiden, Fujin has spent centuries guarding his realm. Despite his fortitude, Fujin is occasionally perplexed by Raiden’s fondness to mortals. With Raiden’s recent disappearance and news of Shinnok’s amulet being stolen from the special forces, Fujin is left wondering if it his time to guard these mortals and learn what’s so special about them.
Special Moves:
Crossbow: Fujin pulls out his crossbow and can fire it upwards, downwards, or straight forward. Enhanced has him fire a bolt of wind energy instead.
Cyclone Spin: Fujin spins around while a tornado forms around him. It may look like Lao’s spin, but it hits multiple times and can be enhanced mid attack to lift the opponent into the air.
Lunging Knee: Fujin makes himself fly towards the opponent with the aid of his wind abilities, kneeing the opponent for 3 hits. Works best to end combos.
Tornado Toss: Fujin throws a tornado across the screen. Works like Kitana’s fan-nado.
Variations:
Hurricane: Utilises tornadoes to control the field at various ranges. (Gains Tornado sighting.)
Special Attacks:
Tornado Sighting: Fujin points his palms to the ground, and a tornado shoots up from the floor like D’vorah’s ground swarm.
Airbender: Fujin utilises his natural element to control the field of battle. (Gains wind gust, cutting winds, and air drop.
Special Attacks:
Wind Gust: Fujin can other push the opponent away, or push them close with a gust off wind. The “Backdraft” can be used at the end of certain strings to keep the combo going.
Cutting Winds: Fujin sends out thin wind currents as a projectile. Enhanced sends out multiple.
Air drop: An air grab where Fujin performs a flying izuna drop while spinning in a cyclone.
Protector: Fujin gains new attacks involving his wind staff.
Special Attacks:
Rising staff: Fujin swings his staff upwards. Enhanced has him shoot a blast of wind afterwards to keep them up for a juggle.
Staff Spin: Fujin makes his staff twirl in front of him, reflecting projectiles and hitting multiple times in close range. Amplify for a double handed swing to knock the opponent away.
X Ray: Next In Line: Begins with Fujin summoning a tornado that pulls the opponent in if they’re within range. If it connects, Fujin suspends them in the air while flying back and forth with strikes, before a superman punch to their back, breaking their spine, He pulls out his crossbow and fires an arrow directly into the opponent’s forehead, cracking their skull. Finally, he flips out of his cyclone, and performs a flip kick to the back of the opponent’s head.
Fatalities:
Ripped away: Fujin creates a massive tornado around himself, sucking the opponent in. You hear the opponent screaming before Fujin snaps his fingers and the tornado fades away, revealing a pile of skinned body parts. Fujin chuckles sheepishly, as if he didn’t mean to go that far.
Lift and split: Fujin lifts the opponent into the air high enough to go off screen. He then makes an upwards motion with his fingers, sending out a thin wind current. You hear a slicing sound, and Fujin turns round as the opponent falls back to the ground, vertically bisected.
Brutalities:
Godlike accuracy: Final hit must come from Crossbow from jump distance. The shot goes straight through the opponent’s head. (Universal.)
Heavy winds: Final hit must come from cyclone spin. The opponent’s skin is ripped away. (Universal.)
Blown Away: Final hit must come from tornado sighting. The opponent is lifted up to the air, and they’re split apart by the force of the tornado. (Only in Hurricane variation.)
Sonic Boom: Final hit must come from air drop. When the opponent hits the ground, their head explodes. (Only in Airbender variation.)
Split: Final hit must come from Enhanced Staff Spin. The final swing slices through the hips but the opponent stays standing. Fujin walks over and makes a small gesture with his hand to blow off the upper body from the lower. (Only in protector variation.)
Victory pose:
Fujin floats into the air and strikes a pose with a slight nonchalant confidence.
