What a cute silly plush duck! Right? WRONG! Goose? INCORRECT! This is no duck. This is no goose. This is no animal we have in our world. This is a Googles, and you have never seen anything like it!

Webkinz, as you likely know, is one of those 2000s Virtual Pet Worlds, with the gimmick of buying a real plush animal that would allow you to play with that animal in the game. And I mean animal! For the most part these are all actual animals, or at least variants of them, like a dog with a watermelon color scheme, or a lion with a flower petal mane. There are also some mythical creatures like dragons, which, yeah, it makes sense. Of course kids would want to have one of those as a virtual pet!

Then there are the Zingoz, original little monster guys who get whacked with bats by bigger monster guys. I guess they're a little weird considering the setting, but "shape with face and limbs" is not on its own Weird. I have no feelings on Zingoz.

It is Googles that fascinates me so much! All of these real animals, some fantasy creatures, a few minor goofy monsters, and yet, there is Googles. They have ducks and geese in the game. This is not one of them. It is the mundanity of Googles that fascinates me so! Of all the things to be an original trademark species, they decided on a Kind Of Different Duck, and I delight in that.

But there IS a reason for Googles! A point of origin! It would have been FUNNIER if there wasn't, but it's ok. It still is nice and makes me smile.

In the 1980s, GANZ, the company that would go on to make Webkinz, released a series of funny little flat plushes, including this ducky one! And that name on the tag... that's Googles! From what I can tell, this whole series was known as Googles, and included other species, like dogs and walruses, but these duck-billed bowling pins were the most popular.

So for Webkinz, they decided to revive one of their old, beloved plush creatures, bringing Googles to new generations while not telling them about its origins, making this silly fowl a strange, mundane mystery! And THAT is all you need to know about the taxonomy of Googles.

At least, that's what I thought until I found out about this official animated music video for babies, that repeatedly refers to an individual Googles as a PLATYPUS. Platypus?! Where's the TAIL? That's one of the most important features to represent! Their bills certainly are broad, but I assumed it was just a stylization thing. And if platypus, where are their forelegs?

I do not accept this answer. I do not think I will ever find a satisfactory conclusion. I admit defeat, Webkinz Animated Music Video From 2010. You have bested me.

Part 2 to my original post of Mean Siblings Unbreakable Bond because it’s funny writing them:

Whenever they play an outdoor game like Hide and Seek or Tag, it’s a battle to the death to achieve victory. Sonic usually wins the most bc he’s the fastest, so the one ace in his sleeve that Tails learned to pull is the waterworks. Sonic find him during hide and seek? Tears. Sonic is close to tagging him? Tails will fall down and pretend to get hurt and start sobbing. Sonic falls for it every time.

Doing laundry? They make it last for hours on end bc they’ll literally take each others stuff out of the wash mid cycle to out their own in. It pisses the other off so much to the point where they’re constantly stopping the wash to switch out the clothes. Oh, Sonic is washing his old blue hoodie??? Too bad, Tails yanks it out of the washing machine sopping wet and drops it on the floor with a splat to put his blanket in. They know that they can probably just wash their stuff together but it’s funnier this way.

They’re play fighting and Tails learned to do that infamous leg kick. You know the move you do when you’re cornered on your back? He just starts kicking his legs at full speed and Sonic starts screaming bc it’s nearly impossible to get past that move.

Sonic is eating chips and he has dust all over his hands? He purposely bypasses the numerous napkins they have just to go up to Tails and wipe his hands over his head to have the chip dust fall on top of him. Tails retaliates by shaking the empty chip bag over Sonic’s head.

Tails is an avid coffee drinker and Sonic has tried everything to stop his addiction. So he tries the famous ‘replace the sugar with salt’ trick to mess with him. One morning Tails puts the salt in instead and when he takes a sip Sonic already had that shit eating grin on his face. Tails immediately spits the coffee in his face and Sonic fall to the ground screaming.

Tails take advantage of his shorter height and sneakiness to kneel down and tie Sonic’s shoe laces. He’ll fall face first and before Tails can book it away Sonic will stick his leg out and make his brother fall too.

Their favorite way to embarrass the other is going onto each others social media accounts and changing something about their profile. Tails logs on one day and finds that his profile picture had been changed to an embarrassing photo Sonic took of him one day and PROMISED not to show anyone else. Sonic goes into his Twitter and for some reason there’s hundreds of posts hyping up Eggman and basically talking about how Eggman is the best/greatest, etc. His profile, header- everything is basically changed to pro-Eggman propaganda.

Fans: are you and Eggman friends now???

Sonic: I was hacked I would never say this shit pls you gotta believe me 😭

Tails LOVES bringing up the ‘divorced parents’ story whenever someone asks about the relationship between him and Sonic. Like Sonic is about to explain how Tails is his adoptive brother and Tails immediately interrupts and says, “Yeah, this is my dad. He got custody of me after the divorce and it’s been really hard lately so try to be nice to him ok? :(“

They’re eating out at a diner/restaurant and Sonic looooves secretly telling the waiters that it’s Tail’s birthday so they’ll do that embarrassing thing of coming to their table and singing happy birthday in front of the whole restaurant. Tails is mortified and covers his face every time and Sonic will record the whole thing like a corny parent and say “Oh he’s just a little shy! Smile at the camera Tails!1!!1!! 😁”

So if Threshold happens to different Trek crews, who gets who pregnant? Voyager is one of the few shows where it makes heterosexual sense, (for lack of a better word, "sense" not being the word anyone would use to describe threshold)

So for Voyager, it being Paris (pilot) and Janeway (captain) makes sense through that lens. Paris, sure, because he is a pilot. We could pick a Science Guy to do it, but then it might be B'Elanna who does the flying fast, and then who is she going to kidnap for Lizard Sex? Harry? ... Yeah it'd be Harry. Anyway once you've picked Paris, you've got to figure out which woman is funniest to have him abduct into Lizardry. B'Elanna? No, not funny enough. She'd be a Klingon lizard and beat him up instead of mating, even if they did get married later. Besides, what if she evolves into a super-advanced Klingon, not a lizard? *claps* PUT TUVOK ON THE SHUTTLE. Kes? No, they already did a Tom v Neelix episode. Seven of Nine isn't on the show yet, so Janeway it is.

Ok so for other shows, we gotta pick a pilot or science guy (who might be screwing around with transwarp, and thus get Lizarded) and someone they could turn into a lizard to have babies with. The show is assuming heterosexual pairings here, but we know about things so we are not so limited.

The original series: as much as I'd love to say Sulu and Uhura ("I'll save you, fair maiden!" "sorry, neither"), I think TOS was much less of an ensemble than later Treks, so it'd need to be Spock. Spock is doing some science stuff, he gets hyper-evolved, and he picks someone else to hyper-evolve and turn into his lizard bride. As much as I want to say "Kirk", I think it's more likely that he runs off with Uhura and then Kirk has to rescue them. Kirk was always about being the one who rescues people, having the Enterprise come rescue Lizard!Spock (is that antisemitic?) and Lizard!Kirk and it's called commanded by McCoy? Nah.

TNG: the direct analogy to VOY would mean we have Wesley and... Picard? No, no, and no. Sorry. Frankly, we already had this plot on TNG (Genesis), and canonically the answer is Worf and Troi. The problem with it being a pilot thing is that Wesley is a child and Data (the official science guy) is an android, so he can't really be hyper-evolving. We could go with Geordi, the other Science Guy, but then we've got the image of a black man kidnapping a white woman. Uhhhh no. We already did that episode and it is an example of Deep Shame for the show. So Worf and Troi it is.

DS9: so this is what inspired me to make this post. We all agree Sisko would be a damn good father to his lizard babies, but would it be him? If so, with who? You could have it be Dax, and she lizards first and kidnaps him, which makes some sense given that she's a Science Guy. But you also have to consider Weird Guys. Every Trek series needs a Weird Guy so that whenever an ancient alien artifact turns the whole crew into Muppets or whatever, they can be the one who isn't affected and can thus solve it. This is all to say, Odo/Kira could be done. We've had a few episodes where he's been shown to do very extreme things out of his pining for her, so it makes some sense. Odo/Quark would be funnier but given how the DS9 writers handled Profit and Lace, I really don't want to see them do a gay mpreg episode.

ENT: the series with canon mpreg! Direct translation of would be Mayweather/Archer. Mmm. Probably not. I think it's gonna be a rarepair: Trip/Hoshi. Trip/T'Pol is too canon to be funny. The next best option is Archer/T'Pol and that's just kinda bleh. It makes sense but it's just the kind of thing they'd do and it'd be bland. We can do better. Honorary mention: Trip and Reed.

I've not watched enough of the New Treks to have an opinion there. Maybe SNW: Ortegas and La'an. Don't ask why.

Good Omens 2 and Wayward Son - A Fan's Commentary on Fandom Reactions

I’m going to start off by saying apologies for any obvious grammatical errors. I am writing purely from the heart here. 

Also, apologies to my Sandman friends. If you haven’t read The Simon Snow Trilogy, this will go over your heads. However, I have been going back and forth on writing this meta since the release of Good Omens 2, and I just finished reading a spectacular meta on queer ships becoming canon by @avelera, which you can find here (read it, it’s brilliant). Anyway, I feel now’s a good time to let out all of my feelings when it comes to Good Omens 2 and how similar it was to reading Wayward Son. 

Simon Snow friends, you all know that Wayward Son is my favourite book out of the trilogy. You also know that this can be considered a controversial take within the fandom. And I don’t mean that in a toxic way, this fandom is one of the more wholesome fandoms I’ve seen; But in the way of like… Wayward Son is itself a polarizing book. 

I say this, knowing full well what went down when Wayward Son was released. Perhaps I had the advantage of not being completely embroiled within the Simon Snow  fandom until after I’d finished reading the book, but I lived on the periphery. I followed Rainbow on Twitter (fuck you, I am not calling it X), I had saved some artwork on Pinterest (before I found out those were stolen, wherein I immediately unpinned them and deleted my fandom folders), and I was excited to get Wayward Son as soon as it came out. So much so that I asked my husband to go to the Indigo near his office and buy it because I wanted to read it right away. 

Friends, I demolished that book within a DAY. 

Then I read it again. And again. And again. 

Then I wrote my first fanfiction in eight years. 

This book changed me. But you all know that. I’ve talked about it often, and that’s not what this meta (Editorial? Opinion piece? Shouting into the void?) is about. 

What I am going to talk about is the amount of pure vitriol this book got once it was released. There was SO MUCH complaining about the book. It was too short! There was no point to it! Why aren’t Simon and Baz having sexy vampire sex? Why aren’t they living together (never mind that this was briefly discussed at the end of Carry On, but go off I guess)? 

And you know what’s even funnier? Within a couple of weeks (it might have even been days, I’m a little fuzzy on timelines) Rainbow announced the third book. We knew, right away, that Wayward Son was meant to be an in-between book! Rainbow, being a fandom person herself, has said time and time again that she had always considered Wayward Son as an in-between book, structured like The Empire Strikes Back within the Star Wars original trilogy. Like think of the in-between books of any series, they are ALWAYS the darkest ones. In order to fully appreciate the win in the end, you need to go through the tough shit. 

What I loved about Wayward Son was it took that idea and spun it. It went all “ok, yeah we dealt with the win, now let’s deal with the aftermath. Only then can we have the makeouts and sexy times these guys deserved.”  (and damn, did Any Way The Wind Blows deliver on that promise).

But I am getting away from myself again. Point is, it was always meant to be an in-between book. There was always meant to be a resolution at the end of the trilogy. But that sure as hell didn’t stop people from outright demanding Rainbow give them the happy ending NOW. Pestering her on Twitter, (not so much on Tumblr) demanding she do this, or do that, or “you better not kill Baz” (even though she has ALWAYS SAID SHE NEVER WOULD) or “they better not break up” (even though, narratively, it was heading in that direction). The closer the book got to release date, the more people complained about how awful Wayward Son was. 

It was really disheartening to see. 

Which is why I got really upset when the SAME THING happened after the release of Good Omens 2. 

(For clarification purposes, because several of my friends have spoken to me about their own personal issues with Good Omens 2. And you are all super fucking valid. I am strictly referring to the amount of anger I saw online because although Aziraphale and Crowley kissed, they didn’t have an immediate happily ever after. I am also speaking of the anger expressed because the season wasn’t wrapped up in a neat little bow.)

Like with the release of Wayward Son, people seemed to have forgotten that season 2 of Good Omens was meant to be an inbetween season. Neil Gaiman has not been shy to talk about that. He has said over and over again that Season 2 was always meant to be a bridge between the Good Omens he and Terry Pratchett wrote together, and the sequel they had been planning. 

What… did you all just forget about that? Do you not know how narrative writing works? 

It’s like people refused to take a step back and breathe for a second and appreciate the season for what it was. A beautiful romantic story (because, IT WAS! Just like Neil said it would be), as well as a lead up into what will be the epic, dramatic conclusion. No, instead people started demanding the happy ending NOW, and getting angry when Neil wouldn’t budge and offer more information (even though he never has before) (funny how people just… forgot that).

It was Wayward Son all over again.

Yeah, I’m not going to lie, I was crushed with the way Good Omens 2 left off. Just like I was so confused when Wayward Son ended out of the blue. You know what I did about that? I wrote fic, I read the book again, and I happily anticipated the upcoming final part that would tie up all the loose ends.

Know what I’m doing to heal after Good Omens 2? I’m looking at gifs, rewatching episodes, laughing at memes and crack, and hoping to all the gods of story writing that Amazon approves of a third season, so that Neil Gaiman can be allowed to finish the story he and Terry Pratchett built together.

It’s become sad to watch this feral hunger from fans demanding immediate gratification, and getting upset when it isn’t the ending or gratification they were expecting. Wayward Son came out after years of Carry On fans having nothing else but the one book. Like I said, I wasn’t part of the fandom then, so I don’t know how fans from 2015 felt upon learning they’d get more Simon and Baz. Same with Good Omens. I only really got into the fandom a few months before season 2 came out. So I don’t know how OG fans felt waiting and waiting and waiting. So maybe I have that going for me as an advantage, that my hunger wasn’t growing more and more feral. 

Then again, I’m now a part of The Sandman fandom, and we’re essentially waiting on Season 2 to start development. And while I’m hoping a few things are tweaked (like Dream and Hob’s relationship), I’d be more than fine if it stays the same as in the comics. And if they decide to go about that in an entirely different way, I’d be fine with that too. You know why? Because I’ve learned to trust the writers of the stories I love not to lead me astray. 

And if I’m unhappy with something –because nothing is ever 100% perfect, and even my favourite stories end up coming short– there are always fanfictions to write, gifs to laugh at, and fandom friends to discuss plots and meta with. 

I may have lost the point of this meta. I tend to do that, following a train of thought that doesn’t always make sense in the end. 

Fandom friends, can we all just agree to take a breath and be thankful of the stories given to us? Can we learn to appreciate the entire picture, and not just a tiny section of it? And for the love of all that is holy, can we learn to be patient and to listen when our story tellers remind us to wait and see? To trust them when they assure us that our characters will have a happy ending, even if they need to traverse a little in the dark to get there?

I sure as hell am, and I hope you will too.

the original ending would have been so much funnier if it was the final one, with logan, alice and alan being dead. imagine stirring shit up for thirteen years just for everything every other person have done to you to go completely in vain. id be chewing bricks out of sheer rage if that was the case

with that said, i love the ng+ ending :) it has control ending vibe, you just get in the weird ass place and get all the new cool powers and maybe lose tim breaker along the way but hey who said he can escape the narrative

so my final take is that awan plot got transformed so drastically over the course of 11 years that memento movie got turned into the bullet of light, scratch got turned into the demon from supernatural so it doesn't roam free without alan's body in a way of restrictioning it (unlike in awan where it/he was a separate being and was physically confronting alan) and that zane fucked darling after that collaboration video i guess idk man.

btw that grandmaster of the cult of the word who tied sam lake to the chair and killed alex has zane-scratch double voice over, i think that was the collab with scratch he talked about - the very existence of this cult. also, the very mr scratch from the awan can be zane-darling collab? since time is fucked here? ugh.

I come from a place of sheer curiousity and I just wanna ask genuinely- you say that you're a fan of 13s/ the chibnall era. Why? Doctor who is my favourite show and I've connected with every incarnation deeply and immediately, but have never been able to "click" with 13, despite my best efforts. What is it that you like about her? What is it that you like about chibnalls writing? I want to know and I want to like her/it too, but as of right now, I just... don't. Obviously you're not obligated to, but can you explain why?

Ok so this ended up being a Long Post, so I'm putting my response under the read more. Also I'm assuming you've actually watched the Chibnall era up to The Power of The Doctor, if you haven't then heads up for spoilers and stuff that might not make much sense without context.

Oh and I'm gonna @ @rearranging-deck-chairs and @ssaalexblake because I see their DW opinions all the time and they're really good and they can probably give more nuanced answers on some things. (Idk how well I did on explaining why I liked some of them, and it really is up to personal preference on some things)

Thirteen herself:

There are a lot of reasons I like Chibnalls era, but one of the biggest ones out the gate is definitely Jodie and her acting in the role of the Doctor. I think the way she balances bouncy gregariousness with the colder more angry and mean aspects of the Doctor is great. She does this thing where she can just make her eyes go dead and then smile like it's a threat, like she's gonna bite, especially when going up against villains. It's great. And Jodie herself is a delightful person.

Beyond just physical acting choices, I find the thirteenth Doctors struggle between her anger and secrecy, vs her desire to connect and her joy at life very very compelling. She keeps this distance that's really interesting I think, where she's genuinely attached to and trying to be a friend to the Fam, but still trying to keep her whole past out of the deal, which doesn't work that well, as we see in s12 and Flux. She's surrounded by death and haunted by the knowledge of how little time she has with her friends, (Grace, and she just came back from bill) but she still wants and needs that connection, and she learns to live in the present a bit. I made a whole post about her final regeneration speech here. I love her arc a lot even if it hurts. Also she's such a horrible hypocrite about so many things, which also makes her a fun character to rotate in my head and study like a bug. I do see it as being on purpose, some people seem to think it's just bad writing that she contradicts herself but imo that's a big part of her character.

Chibnalls writing:

I personally like the timeless child plot because :

There are a lot of stories and ideas in the Chibnall era I like, and a lot more I find very compelling. Whatever your opinions on the writing (and I definitely have had a lot of critique for some bits), there were a lot of ideas introduced that were fun and interesting. One of the weaker points of the era IMO is having so much fun stuff set up, but only shallowly or quickly exploring it, and then adding more stuff on top.

A lot of things didn't get the exploration/screen time I thought they deserved (especially characterization and interaction/dialogue wise). But that just gives my brain more to chew on at the end of the day, and I do love what was done during the seasons itself, not just all the potential stuff.

1) I can connect with it, I know Chibnall was coming at it from a place of being an adoptee, but as a native person the story of a kid taken and raised into an imperial/colonial society, who had their history stolen and their body exploited to further that societies ends, hits very close to home.

And 2) I have a "everything is true at once" approach to canon and I think the more origin stories we make for the Doctor the funnier it is.

This era had a lot of repeating themes, ideas that showed up and we're explored in a lot of different circumstances, often with a rule of 3 aspect to it. One is themes of Empire and Exploitation. Particularly through the stenza in s11 (empire using up planets, introduced to us basically doing foxhunts for clout, but with People instead of foxes), the dalek specials, the Cybermen in s12, and Division/the timelords in flux (as well as the sontarans &co).

Within that there's the repeating motif of how by exploiting people or their beliefs for power the imperial power/bad guys sew the seeds of their destruction. From Tzim Sha using the Ux and them turning against him, to the Division being destroyed by the Ravagers, who they tried to use to get rid of the Doctor/the old universe (and the doctor and even the master going rogue in the first place). Hell even Kerblam! (I know I know) Has a version, where the AI system being used to do terrible things is the one to call the doctor for help!

Another standout are themes of breaking cycles, Ryan is estranged from his dad and was distancing himself from Graham, but they both put in the work and grow extremely close over their two seasons. He also chooses to leave the TARDIS when he realizes he's absent from his friend's lives and wants to be present. And the Doctor gets to break the cycle of exploitation that Tecteun started, when she meets a vulnerable being with mysterious power (the energy being from TPOTD) she helps it free itself, on a way she wasn't helped.

Individual character stuff:

Going again into more individual character stuff I love, I've gotta give it to Sacha Dhawan for being a fucking superb Master. His acting is bonkers amazing and he does a great job portraying the sorta huge personal crisis the master is going through, and externalizing via evil schemes. At the end of Twelves run we saw Missy try to be like the doctor, to get her friend back (and even succeed a bit) but end up dying for it. Now we come back to a master who died trying to be like the person they see as their only equal, and has discovered (wrongly) that they were never equal to begin with, that the doctor is so much more than them. So he tries to make her like him instead, and If she won't become like him and kill them both along with the rest of gallifrey, then he will become her properly this time (by body snatching), ruin her legacy, and die with her eventually (overtaking her in the same way his whole existance has now been caused/overtaken by the doctor in his eyes, because of her being the source of regeneration)

Also can we talk about the Yaz?? I've been dying to talk about Yaz!!! I love her a lot and I find her fascinating, shes probably my favorite companion based on just sheer amount of time spent Thinking about her. Her doctorification/character arc is so good

Yaz is into the travelling and saving the day lifestyle the Doctor gives her for the responsibility of it all, for feeling useful and capable and good. Her early characterization Monet's include her complaining about not having more interesting jobs as a cop because she wants responsibility, she wanted to be important and helpful (that's the entire reason she became a cop, to help people like she was helped when she was in a dark place, and she finds a better way of doing that with the Doctor). And she GETS THERE, narratively and on a character level, she spends three years on earth with her own companions! She co-pilots the TARDIS and can fly her herself! She saves the day when the master steals the doctors body! And most of all SHES EXTREMELY SAD AT THE END BECAUSE THE PERSON SHE LOVES DIED BEFORE HER!! JUST LIKE THE DOCTOR !! (ugly crying) (I could write a whole other post about thasmin, good and bad, but a lot of people have put it better than me)

Also, I'm a big TARDIS girlie, she has somehow ended up being one of my favorite characters in doctor who, and the chinball era does so much fun stuff with the TARDIS!! Different writers take different approaches to the TARDIS, and how alive vs inanimate, or how active vs passive she is. I think the Chinball era had something special in terms of the way the TARDIS was depicted, and I loved it a lot. We never really get to see past the control room but it's a gorgeous control room! And throughout the era the TARDIS just feels so alive, it's always humming and beeping and chirping, I especially love the moments when the lights change color to match the doctors mood (mostly to blue, for sadness, sometimes red to yell at that dalek that one time). And speaking of the doctor, starting with ghost monument thirteen has a bunch of sweet moments of banter or just ~emotions~ with the TARDIS. I genuinely teared up a bit when she entrusted the timeless child memories to the TARDIS,and before her regeneration speech when she asked the TARDIS to look after her. Because who can she trust with her past AND her future except her oldest truest friend.

I could add a lot more of specific things from the era I love (solitract my beloved) but I think this is getting long enough as is lol.

It also depends on the time line Michael we're talking about. Rz will probably pity you and kind of help you out or something but original Michael is just 'ok bozo. Humans these days are so pathetic lol.'

If he's feeling nice on certain days he'll either drag you or point really close to somerhing or somewhere you're supposed to go. He'll advise you to get glasses and or hearing aids or get it treated whatever.

If it's way too expensive to get it treated Michael will just gesture that he'll kill whoever was treating you after you're finish, but you'll have to explain it to him that it's not that easy and you'll still have to pay. He looks at you with an unreadable look and then scoff which sounded like a sigh. (*sigh* life used to be so easy)

If it's an infection or diseases he acts unbothered but he's calmly panicking 'what the fuck am I supposed to do, I can't kill that'.

He'll appreciate your days together more if it ever got to that point. And most definitely go on an angry massive killing spree if you're gone.

Oh and I forgot to mention. He'll think you're even more fragile and shii. It would be very subtle but he's going to look out for you even more. He sometimes acts as your guard dog, or if you wanna put it in an even funnier way. Your cane.

You already know Jason is protective as shit. And upon learning about your problems he's basically the mom here now.

He's holding your hand or watching you from afar. Atleast it's better than staring at nature and water untill someone gets here.

I'm not sure much about dead bodies but I am sure all their senses go numb. I don't know how Jason does it but he knows every little trap and tricks here and there, so you can be safe.

A little harmless thing he takes advantage of is low key using your bad eyesight and hearing as a way to get close to you and hold you, he kind of feels bad about it but he can't help it.

He likes pranking you, like very sneakily creeping up behind you and awoop, jumpscare. He'll apologize if it greatly startled you.

If you let him he'd be carrying you everywhere. Also keeping you somewhere when the horny teenagers come and disturb your little cottage life together.

Big who is insecure about himself 🤝 s/o who has eyesight problems (and hearing problems.) Match made in heaven.

@dash-n-step ok . youve given me an excuse to infodump about the forbidden megamind lore

to start off, the Doom Syndicate . originally they were going to be in the main film , but they didnt have enough runtime to develop each one's plotline so they scrapped all but Tighten . the members that appear in anything other than concept art include:

Destruction Worker: just a big guy with a traffic cone on his head and demolition tools for hands

Hot Flash: an old lady who can fly and ostensibly wields fire, though in the game i played, she just summoned goons

The Conductor: supposed to be the leader i think? never played his game and i have no idea of his deal

Judge Sludge: a court judge made of slime . thats it

Psycho Delic: my personal fave . a skin tight purple dude dressed like a pimp who runs a sewer disco . can turn into a cloud of toxic gas (he's voiced by King Andrias from Amphibia and Dr Facilier from Princess and the Frog!)

they serve as the main antagonists of three spinoff games. two are plot-identical i think, but are played very different due to platform limits, and one is a sequel.

starting with the home console games bc idk that much about them: the first is Megamind: Ultimate Showdown. a serviceable title, the Doom Syndicate blows up a building and kidnaps Hal out of prison, infusing him with metroman AND megamind dna, turning him into the super-strong super-smart Blue Tighten (his costume is the same, his skin is just blue now).

its worth noting that , after his defeat, hal has no memory of his time as Blue Tighten , and he seems more concerned than upset at his loss. this is important because of the next entry: Megamind: Mega Team Unite . the dumbest title ive ever heard. in this one, metro man and tighten are playable characters, as are each of the villains as you defeat them. because of the prior game, hal being a hero makes some amount of sense because of his unwilling role as the head of the Syndicate .

ok . now i get to talk about the weird fucked up ds game i love so much.

the title of this game befuddles me. the cartridge and box call it Megamind: The Blue Defender. The title screen, on the other hand, calls it Megamind: Bad. Blue. Brilliant.

so thats off to a great start , but it gets better and worse from here. the plot is identical to Ultimate Showdown but the gameplay lacks robot segments because its the ds.

megamind has a set of voice lines that have a random chance to play every time he takes a variety of actions, unfortunately including jumping. this set is very small and he is fully able to say the exact same line back to back . hooray!

one of the game's collectibles is pngs of the film . except one of them is a png of megamind doing finger guns, only found in a trailer . i have no idea why its there.

the credits of the game are astonishingly short, and it only credits four voice actors: those playing Megamind, Tighten, roxanne(?), and Metro Man. this is a problem for a few reasons. first, it fails to credit the misc actors for the goons, the main villains, and minion(may have swapped minion and roxanne) . secondly, and much funnier, it credits metro man, who has zero lines in this game. hooray!

anyway . this game sucks and you should play it . there isnt a 100% reward but the musics a jam and sometimes megamind just gives you a bloodcurdling scream when he falls or gets hit. ok bye

Some thoughts:

Maybe the guitar music as the major instrument for this film has to do with the origins of Rapunzel from the Mediterranean?

The Royals might still have the sun plant somewhere. You replant, you “dead end” the flower to make soup, you continue to care for it with hopes it flowers again. Did that show up in the tv show anywhere?

Useing a pan to fight is a very traditional fantasy trope. Usually reserved for a side character, but still very present. Tangled just brought it out into the common zeitgeist.

Mother Gothel is the worst for many many reasons. Today’s realization- she never braided Rapunzel’s hair. It would have been easy to start when she was little and teach her how to do it herself. It would have meant tripping over it less and spending less time on brushing. You can even keep a long enough tail for brushing while doing the song. She didn’t. Why? Because it was another layer of control. It means it is harder for Rapunzel to leave. It means Rapunzel feels like she is cared for when Gothel brushes it during the song. It keeps Rapunzel “clumsy,” a reason Gothel gives not to let her leave. Or maybe Gothel is just lazy and neglectful. Either way- as someone with super long hair? I hate that woman.

Meanwhile- the Royals never gave up on thier kid coming home. It’s not just the tradition of the lights. It’s that crown. Baby Rapunzel wears that crown in murals. They had that crown sized up, EVERY YEAR, as thier child would have grown. They thought about what she would look like if she showed up tomorrow. They didn’t just recall a baby once a year and mourn. They planned for her to return. That hurts. 👑 💔

Realization after that one- Flynn you absolute RAT. How could you?!

Unintentional side effect of Rapunzel hauling a person up the side of the tower everyday- your girl has impressive upper body strength. She could toss a full grown man into a wardrobe. Gothel… much like keeping her birthday on the same day, your laziness has been turned against you. 😂

The Chameleon has not been out of the Tower any more than Rapunzel, he just has a deep distrust of Mother Gothel. ( proof is in him insisting they check Flynn for pointy teeth😂) I am so happy Rapunzel had that. It’s also even funnier to watch his reaction to everything after your realize that 😂

Dad- “Did you know one of the brothers is Ron Perlman?”

Me- “How could you not? Did you hear the voice?”

Later question- did the other one ever speak??

Flynn is BRUISED. Smacked with a pan, stuffed in a wardrobe, fingers jammed in a door, lands on his face, bashes himself in a fight several times, then is crushed by rocks while trying to escape drowning. Realistically, that song is the only reason the man is able to walk rather than limp into town the next day. 😂

“And you’re still gonna go back?” The girl stole his retirement (his dream, really), and has been a constant irritant since he met her, but the moment he knows the real situation she’s in, he is concerned for her happiness and freedom. He still doesn’t know how bad her mother is, just that she’s been confined. I love him so much. ❤️

And that gives her the confidence to tell her mother “No!” He didn’t even say any more than that. Haveing someone care for you when you are in a bad spot is SO IMPORTANT.

And then-! Just walks out of the wood and sees her standing a little too still. “Hey, are you ok?” 😍

This girl has never seen a horse in her life. And she does that. Seriously. That is a big beefy horse. I like horses, and I would be so much more cautious. Rapunzel knows no fear is all I am saying.

That man has spent time with children. He knew exactly who to ask. He LOOKED for them. Love that continuation of the backstory from the orphanage. Character continuity at its finest.

That dance music has become the sound of joy online. That is beautiful.

They showed the father grieving, and the mother comforting. That is so HUGE, I don’t even have words to explain.

I think Pascal wanted to see the lights almost as much as she did. 🥹

“At Last I See the Light” might be up there as one of the best Disney love songs. ❤️🎶 It is just such a perfect display of who the characters are, how they are changing, and why. And of course the imagery is soft, warm, and iconic. Just Beautiful.🤩

He really stopped caring about the life he dreamed for himself since he was a child. Idk if that says something about how in love he is, or something about how he always cared more for people than gold than he thought he did, but either way, I am still in love with this man ❤️

Omg- she embroidered her own dress. It’s such a small detail, but I love it. She learned all the cottage core crafts, didn’t she? 🥰😆

“It was the old lady” = her mother will do anything, including put her in danger, to keep her imprisoned forever. He is so real for making that connection so fast. Street kid knows what is up, and he will not stand for it. I honestly think he would have gotten her out even if nothing romantic ever happened, and that, at the core of it, is why I like him. 👍

Just- the sheer bafflement of the guards and Flynn alike in that entire escape scene 🤣

Maximus- don’t get this twisted. I am here for the girl.

Actually- now I want to know, what did the horse see that led him to lead an escape mission for his enemy? Did he follow Gothel to the tower? I am intrigued.

Just in case we weren’t convinced, they actually had her “kick the puppy.” 🥺

In revenge, Pascal is like “Nah, we ain’t waiting for her to die of old age.” Ruthless. 😈

As a thief and orphan/street kid, it completely tracks that he would see the life Rapunzel was made to live and equate it to death. I mean, it really was slavery. Imprisonment to ensure services. He was willing to die to keep her free- it is very Old School Hollywood Dashing Rogue of him, and again, I love it ❤️

Omg- Flynn Rider. Errol Flynn. I am a dummy. How did I not make that connection before?!

The king had the grief scene, and the Queen greeted her first. That feels so different from other movies.

They didn’t make her a carbon copy- Rapunzel was clearly her kid, but a younger version with a different chin. The designers put in work, and they have my respect.

That chuckle is the only spoken line the King has. Interesting.

The king is so soft. Big cuddly frame, soft pull into the hug, willing to immediately embrace the young man who brought her home as well. Who designed these men???

“I want something that I want” is currently the theme for my D&D character, and I suddenly am understanding it in the context of this movie. When I first heard it, I thought it was selfish, and it didn’t make sense to me. No- it’s not.

She has never been allowed anything of her own. He has literally had to steal to not starve. This is the feeling of being allowed to want for the first time. No wonder he was so good at helping her through things. It was probably very similar feeling when he first left the Orphanage. 🥹❤️

I imagine this song hit pretty hard for some scared and controlled kids out there. 🎶 Honestly, this whole movie was such a strong example of manipulative abuse, and I am so happy it exists. They clearly put in the work to make it truthful, and it must have helped so many people realize what was going on in their own life. I think every creative hopes to tell a story that connects with people like that.

Aahhh thank you for asking this, Anonie!! I had originally entertained a darling crossover, but I never got to it lol. It’s much funnier to imagine the Harbingers comparing each other’s relationships xD

Here are some bullet points on the darlings’ dynamics!! I also wrote a short drabble featuring some special info ;>

✿ Damsel/ Capitano’s Darling ✿

♡ Damsel is the newest and most “mysterious” darling. She doesn’t really care about the other darlings and only treats them with basic politeness. After a few words of acknowledgement, she avoids further socialization by reading her books or sticking to Capitano’s side  -.-

♡ She isn’t fond of Kitty’s attempts at socializing, but at least the latter respects her comfort zone. After Kitty loses her Vision, Damsel can only pity her…..but then again, doesn’t she look more happy and at peace? It is better if they resign themselves to their fates.

♡ She is absolutely afraid of Dottore and his Assistant, so she often avoids them. She is unnerved by how the couple interacts with her, almost as though they are analyzing her. It is a shame given Assistant’s knowledge on plants and ancient literature.

⬩ Kitty/ Pantalone’s Darling ⬩

♡ Kitty is the friendliest darling among the three. As a Harbinger’s spouse, she finds it important to establish social connections with her fellow darlings. It could potentially benefit Pantalone’s relationship with his coworkers, after all  >:’0

♡ She has a hard time interacting with Damsel because of their stark differences. Extrovert vs. introvert, sheltered vs. independent, wealthy vs. commoner, craves attention vs. keeps to herself……at least Damsel seems nice and unproblematic.

♡ She has a better relationship with Assistant. On the rare chance that they meet each other, it is the latter who initiates a friendly conversation. She is envious of the fact that Assistant can directly work with Dottore and see him everyday.

ﮩ٨ـﮩﮩ Assistant/ Dottore’s Darling ﮩ٨ـﮩﮩ

♡ Assistant is the oldest darling among the three. Given her Fatui position and individual accomplishments, she finds it interesting to think about the other darlings’ passive roles. Upon hearing about their marriages, she considered asking Dottore for a change in their relationship status  <3

♡ She, like everyone else, is curious about Damsel’s melancholy countenance and obscure background. She promptly began to dislike her upon realizing the former’s nervousness around Dottore. She is just another simpleton who doesn’t recognize Zandik’s greatness.

♡ Her slight fascination with Kitty stems from Dottore’s assistance in Pantalone’s relationship. She was the one who helped the Doctor create the catnip-scented perfume and flammable uniform, after all~ The change in Kitty’s personality since her Vision loss is proof of a successful experiment.

“Hey, how long until the Harbingers’ meeting ends?”

The Fatui guard remains silent. Assistant adjusts her mask, turning to their coworkers.

“Why are there so many of you, anyway? Do we require that much protection? I don’t know about the other two, but I can take care of myself.”

She glances at the other two guests.  Kitty is watching her from the sofa, waiting for her to come back and resume their earlier conversation. Damsel is seated by the window, absorbed in yet another fantastical book.

Her voice lowers to a whisper. “Or are you here for surveillance? Ensuring that we won’t plan a joint escape, perhaps?”

What a ridiculous thought. Why would any of them want to leave their lovers?

No response. She sighs and walks over to the far corner of the drawing room.

“Can any of you play chess?” she asks. She takes out a chessboard and sets it on the coffee table. “If only ______ were here. She is quite the formidable opponent.”

And an interesting specimen if she were allowed to say that.

Kitty tilts her head, cat ears twitching. “______? Who is that?”

“Oh, you don’t know her?” Assistant sits on the sofa and begins arranging the chess pieces. “I suppose that makes sense. She is rarely allowed to make a public appearance, after all.”

“Are you referring to the Jester’s lover?”

Thanks for the ask! Long post! TLDR Perfuma is a very good character, the original She-ra is badass, the original is so much funnier than the reboot, the original characters have so much personality! I also like how more characters get more use and how both sides are competent! 10/10!

I'm watching it rn so I'll do a live reaction! Hope that's ok! I'll just be putting my thoughts down here while I'm watching the episode! Ok, starting off Shadow Weaver's voice is um...interesting, that's one of the few things the reboot improved upon. Same with Hordak's voice, they like make a weird noise every second it kinda sounds like a wheeze or a snort? It's no big deal though, I still like the voices. I'm only about a minute in and it's already funnier than the reboot- Okay why are the villains actually competent here- The villains in the reboot are so stupid but here they're actually competent. Good job original she-ra! Also, I love how Shadow Weaver made Hordak believe it was his plan. Mermista has a personality besides being snarky!? Wow! Perfuma is so pretty wth- 5 minutes in and it has way more personality than Horde Prime could dream of! Ok, She-ra's original design is so pretty- Bow has a use!? Oh my god! He's more than just the black best friend stereotype! The princesses are competent as well? Wow! I love Perfuma's voice! Also, I like how she's autistic-coded, I can definitely see it, she also broke out of her cell on her own! Go girl! Also I fucking love Hordak, he's such a funny character. Yes he's annoyed by Perfuma but he's supposed to be a villain. Unlike the reboot where the HEROS are the ableist ones. This episode continues to be hilarious, how is it so much funnier than the reboot despite being so much older- I laughed more at this episode than I did the entire show- She-ra is so fucking cool oml- I love the way she-ra called Hordak Hordikins to annoy him. Yeah it's very good! I'd probably rate it 10/10! It's a very good, funny episode!

fucking. miraculous au where chloe got sent to a damned private school. like that shit fucks you up - speaking from experience - and is where she should have fucking gone like girly is the mayors child why is she there. why. it makes no sense. not saying that children of people of import cannot be sent to public schools but judging by the Everything about Andre and Audrey she shouldn't have ended up in a public school.

like i'm sorry but i truly believe she and some of the other characters should have gone to private schools and then there would be that fucked up rivalry between schools that happens - [redacted] die please. your not better at hockey or rugby than us. your rancid (not really but its funny to get so heated) - and like the friendships people have across schools... fr they are so funny.

like genuinely with fashion as a core theme in miraculous it would be so much funnier if they had to wear uniforms, and on non uniform day - generally charity work, pay to not wear uniform money goes somewhere good, it works well - everyone would go buck wild except for Adrien who in my heart he would escape in a hoodie and joggers

Pros

I actually am a big fan of muppets abc. I’ll get into the cons later but I like the style of humor the show has (for the most part), I like when the muppets have more of an adult spin where it’s not like family guy humor but it’s a little more mature than most muppet projects. The modern muppets have been so heavily targeted toward children in many projects that it’s nice to see them recognize that a lot of modern muppets fans are adults (not that adults can’t like children’s humor, I for sure do, but y’know).

Also I really like a lot of the people they chose as guests for the show, and I honestly like the sitcom style following the muppets backstage of a show. I think it’s a good modernization of the original muppet show premise that allows it to focus less on skits and more on characters. Also normally I despise social media plot lines but I actually like the way this show handles pulling the muppets into the digital age, which is crucial for such a timeless property.

Also, as many problems as there are for muppets fans, it’s a really good show to watch with people who casually enjoy the muppets. This show’s style is more to the taste of some of my family members so I like watching it with them. And separate from the muppet’s characterizations the comedy is really good (but that’s subjective so I can see how it rubs some people the wrong way).

Cons

For one the cliffhanger ending kills me. Even if this show was weirdly received it had a really short run, they could’ve used a few more episodes or another season so we didn’t get left on such an annoying cliffhanger (that left Kermit and piggy still officially broken up since the show didn’t continue long enough for them to get back together).

Ok let me get into characters now, because that’s a criticism that I think is 100% valid (though I also think few people other than jerry juhl have properly understood the muppets and not flanderized their characters in some way)(but yeah it’s really bad here).

Scooter!!

How they’ve massacred my boy!

We’ll get to piggy but scooter is the one I’m most upset about. Why? Why change him from nepo baby humor to haha nerd comedy?? It was 2015 man we love making fun of nepo babies and rich people nowadays why would they change the character whose gimmick gets funnier with age?

His characterization feels pulled from the Big Bang theory. All his comedy is just “virgin nerd” comedy. I love that the show tried giving him more screen time than other projects but they fumbled the bag. He was a spoiled teenager who was wild and fun and could get away with anything because his uncle was rich. I get he’s older now but I refuse to think aging did this to him.

Because I’m a nerd I’m gonna pull some quotes about scooter from the new Richard hunt biography bc that man understood his characters.

“Like Hunt, Scooter is a born performer. Scooter also resembles Hunt in his amiable disposition and his almost nonchalant acceptance of the other characters and their quirks.”

“This acceptance stems from his own quiet confidence in himself… happily amusing himself and the people around him.”

“‘Scooter is a perpetual kid and very comfortable with who he is,’ said Hunt.”

HMMMM? CONFIDENCE? A PERFORMER? COMFORTABLE WITH WHO HE IS?

abc scooter just gives off such anxious vibes it really makes him feel like he’s lost the part of himself that made him so much like Richard Hunt.

Piggy

Ughhh she’s just not fun to watch for the most part in this show. I like the idea of her being the star of the show this time around, reminds me of her unexpected rise to fan-favorite muppet soon after Oz took over her character.

I also really like her friendship with deadly. I think miss piggy so often is boiled down to her love for Kermit that I really love the idea of having her explore platonic bonds. Her looking so hard for happiness in romantic relationships but eventually realizing that deadly is the one who’s been by her side, that he’s her friend and that she really loves him for sticking by her is a really sweet arc (for both of them. Love platonic piggy relationships and I like the modern fashion designer vibe they’ve been doing with deadly, I think it’s a fun reimagining of his original character).

But her diva meter really is pushed up to eleven.

Not to pull more from the Richard hunt bio, but Oz describes piggy as “The tough woman underneath the coyness. And the fact that she had to be coy to get things the way she wanted them, like most women at that time.”

Piggy is from humble beginnings and understands how she needs to act to get people to feel a certain way about her. She also won’t take shit from anybody, though. She knows her worth and knows she’s worked hard to get here, but it also was such an uphill battle to stardom for her I just refuse to believe she would become so selfish and act so privileged the way she does in the show.

ABC piggy doesn’t feel like a girl who tries to be coy but knows to be tough when she needs to be. ABC piggy is mean. She has a thin temper and everyone is scared of her and she’s so removed from the non-famous life that she has trouble bonding with people. She only does community service for publicity and can barely manage to do any manual labor. She’s not tough. She’s angry. She’s short-tempered and violent. And she has no trace of her humble roots, that gratefulness for the position of fame she’s in that she holds in so many other roles.

Others

Sam is pretty creepy. I love his gag of being the censorship for the show, him popping up saying “can’t say that” is a nice little nod to him trying to control the chaos of the original show and his little conservative speech sketches. His crush on Janice is kinda odd tho. I like him getting more modern spotlight, I really like his character in most wanted (though a rewatch of that is needed haven’t seen it in a while). But yeah he’s kinda weird here.

Also why were gonzo and Camilla broken up. Disagree. Idc about your relationship drama they’re the muppets otp.

Uhh trying to think off the top of my head, it’s been a few months since my rewatch of the show. I don’t like the mayhem fight. I think teeth and Floyd fighting over Janice is weird and off for them in modern day. Respect Janice rejecting labels, go off Queen.

Conclusion/TLDR

I had more to say than I realized but I don’t want to make too long of a post. Tldr, I really like the show and it’s humor but it does feel divorced from “the muppets” as a pre-established franchise and characters. The characterization is bad, even though I appreciate them trying to give more screen time to some lesser used characters, it didn’t really work. I just think it had a lot of potential, and I like the idea of a more adult but still family oriented muppet show, but the execution was really hit or miss.
