Ghost – Against the odds

Matters of Faith

Heavy rock bands capable of making an international breakthrough have become a rarity nowadays. During the past few years, one band has succeeded in this feat better than others: Ghost. Its story is already filled with an astounding amount of interesting turns and strange coincidences, but if we ask frontman Tobias Forge, Ghost has only taken its first steps.

Prologue: Once upon a time…

…there was a little boy from Linköping, who took an interest to heavy rock music thanks to his older brother. Around the same time, the boy, named Tobias Jens Forge, grabbed the book Stone Alone which was about the life of The Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman. The reading experience was so fascinating that the boy started devouring the biographies of other musicians as well. One of his most influential early musical experiences was Metallica’s colossal The Black Album, but soon the darker, more mysterious and dangerous paths of death and black metal swept the boy with them.

In 1998 the boy had grown into a young man, who founded the death metal band Repugnant, whose only album Epitome of Darkness came out in 2006, after the band had already disbanded. On the verge of adulthood, the youth also played the guitar in other underground acts, such as Magna Carta Cartel as well as an early incarnation of Crashdïet.

The same year Epitome of Darkness came out, a song in Swedish, Satans Natt, was conceived “for a possible new project”. A musician friend of several years [of Forge’s] heard the “not particularly serious” demo version of the song and urged him to compose more songs in the same vein. That’s what happened.

Soon the project got the name Ghost, and in 2008 the title of Satans Natt was changed to Stand by Him, whose lyrics begin with the sentence “Devil’s power is the greatest one”. Bingo! Like almost always in the case of the best rock music, the deal with the good ol’ Devil had been sealed.

Ghost did not hurry, however, since the air was thick with a fragile “now or never” atmosphere that was not worth shattering with something unfinished. The D-Day dawned on Friday 12th of March 2010, when Ghost released a three-song debut demo on their plain MySpace Page.

First Act: Year Zero

It’s April 2018, and Tobias Forge has arrived at the Universal Music facilities in Södermalm, Stockholm. The slender musician has taken off his black leather jacket, whose front is adorned with Misfits, King Diamond and Venom pins among other things, and settled into a comfortable position on one side of the black sofa in the conference room. Forge, who has been extremely busy during the past decade, has had some free time with his wife and two children during the past couple of weeks.

It doesn’t require being an adept judge of human character to notice that Forge is positively exuding happiness and calm. Though why wouldn’t he be, seeing as his dreams for his musical career have come true. Even the wildest ones of them all.

–When I founded Repugnant, I was hoping for the band to become a big name in the field of death metal. I was dreaming of achieving something that for example Amon Amarth have reached. Anyway, it didn’t come into fruition for a multitude of reasons. For starters, our timing was completely wrong, since the popularity of death metal was at a low while nu metal was dominating the charts. No matter what I tried, Repugnant didn’t seem to provoke much of a response. It was inevitable that my enthusiasm started to wane.

Despite his adolescence having been permeated by extreme metal, Forge has always been far from a thick-skulled metalhead, who refuses to see past the end of his nose. The time had come to do something other than death metal.

–If you ask what my favorite album is, I might mention Season Of The Dead by Necrophagia, but I could also mention a thousand other albums. My earliest musical memories have to do with the releases of Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Kiss and Mötley Crüe – especially Shout At The Devil terrified me as a kid – and I still love these bands. Queen, Misfits, Pink Floyd and The Doors have always been huge favorites of mine. I really like many Swedish artists, such as Lars Winnerbäck. The world of AOR has killer names like Journey and Foreigner who have affected Ghost’s vocal harmonies tremendously. Yeah, I could continue this list endlessly.

When Forge started planning “yet another project”, that is to say Ghost, his idea was to combine Satanic and occult imagery (“I read Necronomicon at a young age and its impact was pretty huge”) with progressive and organic hard rock (Uriah Heep, November, Blue Öyster Cult), mystic and sinister heavy metal (Mercyful Fate, Pentagram), obscure metal (Voivod) and huge, shamelessly catchy hits (Africa by Toto).

The end result was a some kind of cross between Black Sabbath and Abba.

–After a few Ghost songs had been finished, I started looking for a singer for the band. I’m a guitarist and I wouldn’t have thought I would become the band’s singer. I inquired the interest of many of my famous colleagues, such as Messiah Marcolin of Candlemass, but no candidate expressed any. Not a single one. However, I still wanted to play the cards I had been dealt, so I had to be the singer.

“From rags to riches in one night” is a horrible cliché, but that is exactly what happened to Ghost, at least to some extent.

–I uploaded the demo songs on MySpace and turned off the computer for several hours. When I turned it back on again… Well, I could hardly believe my eyes. During a short time, the page had been flooded with praise from fans, record labels and colleagues alike. At that moment I realized that if I had been given one chance to succeed in the world of rock ‘n’ roll, its time – Ghost’s Year Zero – had now come.

Mysterious are the workings of higher powers, which is something Tobias Forge got painful proof of later on the very same day. Only a few hours after Ghost’s emergence Forge’s world collapsed: his 41-year-old older brother – his mentor and role model – had passed away.

–Two of the biggest changes in my life up to that point happened on the same day. I don’t believe in the supernatural, but the timing of these incidents made my skin crawl.

Second Act: I love Ghost

Ghost’s explosive popularity on MySpace really set things in motion, and it wasn’t long until they signed a record deal with the former Napalm Death and Cathedral singer Lee Dorrian’s Rise Above Records. Their first album Opus Eponymous was released towards the end of fall 2010.

–When Opus Eponymous was released, I was 29 years old and had been playing in different bands for maybe 15 years. I had been involved in making albums that music magazines didn’t pay any attention to – they didn’t even bother to review them. At some point I was seriously plagued by self-doubt, and daunting thoughts like “maybe I will never have a successful music career“ crept into my mind. After all this, the warm reception and positive reviews Opus Eponymous received felt fantastic, Forge says.

–I am a perfectionist, and Opus Eponymous is, of course, far from being a perfect album. If I listen to it today, I find myself constantly thinking that “I could have done that and that so much better.” But Opus Eponymous is a product of its time and it opened countless doors for Ghost. The material on the album was written with no plans for a future record deal on the horizon, and this is why the album is extremely stripped-down and genuine. In many ways Opus Eponymous is and always will be my most important release, because it gave me a chance.

When Opus Eponymous was released in mid-October, Ghost hadn’t played single gig. And performing is at least equally as important as recording to Forge, who has loved the performing arts ever since he was a little boy.

–We played our first gig in Germany at the Hammer of Doom festival five days after Opus Eponymous was released. The gig was such a bizarre experience… As I said, I have the identity of a guitarist, and only doing the singing felt weird at first. And I looked weird too, in the mask and robes of a satanic pope, Forge laughs.

–I felt that the hype around Ghost also caused the audience to just observe the gig instead of really enjoying it. The atmosphere was reserved and I couldn’t really tell if they liked us at all. Luckily we performed in London the very next night, and the atmosphere at Camden Underworld was fantastic. The venue was packed and everyone sang along with the lyrics like there was no tomorrow. It was one of those important moments when I understood that Ghost could really become something.

The character of a satanic pope that Forge, who had been impressed by the “skull mummies” in Indiana Jones films already as a kid, had created answered to the name Papa Emeritus I during the era of the debut gigs and album. For their next album Infestissumam (2013) Ghost “changed singers” and Papa Emeritus II, who of course was Forge’s next character, took the stage. A similar metamorphosis occurred with the album Meliora (2015).

–During an early stage of planning I decided that songs like these that flirt with mysticism and occultism cannot be performed dressed in a t-shirt and jeans in the corner of a pub. In other words, it was as clear as day from the start that Ghost’s show had to be very memorable visually. One of the ideas had to do with the stage, which I had wanted to look like a church of some kind. This in turn led to the thought that the night’s Master of Ceremony had to be some kind of a satanic clergyman or the leader of a cult. The system that the Catholic Church and the Vatican have had in place for centuries, where a new pope rises to power every now and then, offered the perfect model for Ghost’s upside-down world.

Ghost’s concept is so ingenious that it instantly arouses the question of why nobody came up with it earlier. Something that further adds to its ingenuity is that if Forge starts running out of ideas at some point, he can turn his attention to years past and reanimate Papa I or some other former frontman of Ghost. And the fans will rejoice.

–Nostalgia is an important part of rock culture – and it has become even more important as many of our heroes have passed away. Some older rock fans are extremely proud about having seen Led Zeppelin live in the 1970s. Or if we consider Metallica… Did you already discover them during Cliff Burton’s era, or did you only get excited about Load? For die-hard fans this is a question of life and death.

Speaking of Metallica – even though Ghost is superior among newer bands, it would not have reached its current status without James Hetfield. When Metallica played in the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg in summer 2011, Hetfield appeared in an interview in a live broadcast on Swedish television wearing a Ghost shirt. “Papa Het’s” comment “I love Ghost” reached millions of metal fans through the internet, which marked the end of Ghost’s days as an underground band.

–We performed at Roskilde that same night, and suddenly my phone was full of messages telling me that Hetfield had praised Ghost on television. It did feel incredible, Forge reminisces.

–It’s been baffling to notice how adaptable the human mind is. As you get to know your childhood heroes personally, they become less exceptional. I don’t mean to say that meeting James Hetfield isn’t great every single time, but nowadays things like these are a part of my life. Just like endless travelling. Before Ghost, I had barely travelled anywhere and now I have visited dozens of different countries.

When did you visit the USA for the first time?

–Oh, this is a fun story! I was determined that I would only go to the United States when I had a gig there, and that’s what ended up happening when we played at Maryland Deathfest in the spring of 2011. It was an unbeatable feeling!

Third Act: My name is Tobias Forge

And the Grammy goes to… Ghost!

Who would have thought that a Swedish metal band in the beginning of their career would win a Grammy, the most esteemed award in the world of pop music, with some help from Metallica or not. That’s what happened, however, when Forge and his then-nameless ghouls picked up the award for Best Metal Performance in Lost Angeles in winter 2016.

–[The Swedish producer] Max Martin probably has something like 50 Grammys, but otherwise there aren’t many of those within Sweden, Forge says.

–I was already dumbfounded by the fact that we were nominated, so winning felt completely unfathomable. So many famous bands have been nominated for a Grammy numerous times but never gotten the award, and we took it right off the bat.

–My mother was so excited about the news about the Grammy that she started telling everyone about “her son’s band Ghost”. Despite all the times I had emphasized that we were going to hold onto our anonymity as long as possible… Well, I did know that the rocketing growth of Ghost’s popularity meant that our road of being anonymous and faceless would end sooner or later.

The words “My name is Tobias Forge and I am the singer of Ghost” were broadcast on the frequency of a Swedish radio station late in the summer of 2017 [T/N:  Here the author misquotes the Sommar i P1 interview slightly – what Tobias actually said was more along the lines of “My name is Tobias Forge and I am the man behind the mask in Ghost.”]. It was the first time Forge had publicly admitted to being Ghost’s frontman.

–I am a control freak, but unfortunately controlling everything is not possible. Especially not when a rock band grows faster than anybody could have expected.

Forge having to reveal his identity has to do with disagreements that arose following Ghost’s success. Some of Ghost’s background musicians – the no-longer-so-nameless ghouls Simon Söderberg, Mauro Rubino, Henrik Palm and Martin Hjertstedt – sued their former boss in the spring of 2017. The reason? Nothing particularly surprising. The four of them thought that they had not been paid enough.

As an outsider, it is easy to understand the views of both the visionary dictator Forge and his former bandmates. It’s one thing to dream of a jackpot, but during Ghost’s early days no one could have predicted the diabolical heights that they would reach. As their popularity skyrocketed, and the original lineup consisting of an old group of friends had no written agreement, both sides could claim anything.

–A famous musician said to me that all successful bands have to settle their accounts in court sooner or later. He added that things like this are a sign of success and that many things have been done correctly. He was right.

The legal battle remains unfinished, but the former members of Ghost got one small win so far – at least if their purpose was to throw a wrench in the works. After all, isn’t it the case that the mystery surrounding Ghost has somewhat decreased, now that everyone knows the identity of the visionary behind it all? Or is it?

–Well, the situation is what it is and there’s no changing it. If Ghost’s brand is as strong as I hope and want it to be, the band will survive this with no significant repercussions. It’s true that a part of the mystery is gone forever, and if someone can no longer enjoy Ghost after seeing my face, so be it. But ultimately I’m not that worried, since I can still control the publicity fairly well. I have no intention of going to speak nonsense in some reality show.

Fourth Act: Don’t you forget that you will die

This summer marks the beginning of yet another era in Tobias Forge’s unholy books. The recently released fourth studio album Prequelle mischievously flits from one atmosphere to another, and has already become a cornerstone in Ghost’s constantly strengthening fortress.

As is the custom, the frontman of the band has “changed” yet again and Papa Emeritus III, who became a fan favorite with the album Meliora and the EP Popestar, is gone with the wind – at least for now – and the group is currently led by Cardinal Copia.

A cardinal is below the pope in Vatican’s ranks, but only a cardinal can be elected Pope, and Forge intends to make the most of the possibilities that the band’s “new and wild figurehead” offers. For example, it’s worth checking out the promotional video for Rats, a song inspired by former bandmates (“Them rats,” Forge croaks) – no Papa could ever have executed such dance moves.

The instrumental songs on the new album are in a league of their own. When I first listened to the advance copy of Prequelle, the stylishly flowing Miasma and Helvetesfönster took me by surprise. Ghost goes… Vangelis?

–I dig instrumental music and was planning a few instrumentals already for Meliora. My plans didn’t pan out back then, but this time I was determined to not leave those ideas unused. Naturally, I also wondered if I was completely nuts for releasing 12 minutes of instrumental music… After all, it is quite a lot in this golden age of short hit songs and music streaming. Well, if someone dislikes Miasma or Helvetesfönster, there is nothing I can do about it, Forge laughs.

–I intend to continue in a similar vein in the future. Ghost absolutely isn’t a band that keeps on releasing the same record over and over again. I could have played it safe and written ten songs like Square Hammer or He Is, but that would have been dreadfully boring. In other words: I love Ramones and AC/DC, but Ghost is a band more like Queen – always surprising and exciting. To me, Prequelle sounds just like that – sometimes the music makes you smile but sometimes cry.

A key song on Prequelle is also the delicate and beautiful Pro Memoria.

–The song is about death, such as the deaths of legends like Lemmy Kilmister and Ronnie James Dio. “Don’t you forget that you will die” is a reminder that you must enjoy life in the present and not take things for granted because tomorrow it may already be too late. For example, if Alice Cooper has a show in your city, you should go and see him, because there might not be a next time, Forge reminds me.

–Death has already been sung enough about in the circles of heavy music and usually the point of view is always the same, which is to say that death is praised and glorified. Ghost’s message is different, a slightly more positive one. I want to remind people of how great it is to be alive and how tomorrow things may already be better, even if you feel low today.

Prequelle is a crucially important album for Ghost, who have managed to gain a foothold in the difficult to break into US market – Prequelle might even be the “make it or break it” release that determines the rest of the band’s career. Forge knows it better than anyone, but he refuses to take any pressure about it.

–Nowadays Ghost has many fans all around the globe, and they will surely check Prequelle out. Will they fall even deeper in love with Ghost, or find the album lousy? I don’t know, I really don’t. But what I do know is that I wrote every note and every word on Prequelle from the bottom of my heart.

Epilogue: One more time…

Who would have thought that an unconventional underground band calling itself a “satanic doom metal band” at the start of their career would rise to world fame? No one, not even Tobias Forge himself, though he knew his own skills as a songwriter.

But this is where one of the greatest attributes of rock music lies. You can make all kinds of probability calculations, but the weight of strange coincidences and sheer luck in the equation cannot be measured.

Now Ghost is on the threshold of an ultimate breakthrough. The band is facing that imposing gate that leads to fame similar to Black Sabbath’s, Iron Maiden’s and Metallica’s.

Towards the end of this year, Ghost will be performing at Forum in Los Angeles and at Barclays Center in New York among other places, and both of these two American venues fit approximately 20,000 people. Strangely, even concert plans this huge feel like a logical next step for Ghost.

–(Pauses to think and starts laughing) By then Ghost will be the biggest theatrical rock band in the world, the Queen and the Rolling Stones of its time. Do I really think this will happen? Maybe!

Blog Post About Being Asked To Do A Thing I Don’t Do

I like making these drawings with colour pencils on paper, where I use an existing portrait painting as a base but replace the historical person in the painting with someone living today (usually a marginalised person or someone who just isn’t usually seen in portraits from back then). I recently had an exhibition opening of works like this.

At the opening, a lady asked me what I would charge for making a portrait. And I mused out loud that it’s not something I’ve considered doing, but it might be interesting if someone has like a painting they really like and I drew them as that painting... And she was like no I mean just a portrait. And was confused because... this is how I work, from existing paintings. That are portraits. There would need to be a painting to use. Also we were speaking Swedish in a very loud room so there probably was a little bit of missed communication happening, and like I didn’t really... get why someone would want me to just copy a photo in colour pencil? Like... you already have a photo? Why would...? Like the thing that makes my work cool imo is the combination of sources, old painting and photo.

Well anyway I think she ended up with the idea that I would not be interested in doing a colour pencil copy of a photo (I mean I guess you could pay me to do that? I still don’t understand why but I guess I could). But I ended up with the thought that it might be cool to explore that sort of thing, a person requests a picture from me where I draw them into a painting they have chosen because they like it a lot. So if there is someone out there who likes a certain old (early 19th century is the latest I will do, I prefer earlier) painting (of a person, preferably at least in semi-realistic style, I can’t really do much with expressionism - and Impressionism would have to be a case by case -situation) and has a face they might like to see in that painting, let’s talk. :)

Going back to the lady asking me to draw her. The other thing that makes me hesitant about commissions is that I am not an entrepreneur. 100% no thanks never will be a person who has a business of any size. Even freelancer is pushing it. Making matters worse is the Finnish system where you can live kind of okay if you are unemployed (you get unemployment benefit and housing support etc social security money) but if the unemployment officials decide that you are an entrepreneur, you get no financial support - even if your income is still 0.00€ If you want to start a business here, you need to either be rich, have a steady income (for example spouse has a good job) or be 100% sure your business idea is so perfect it will start making money right away on day one. And none of those apply to me (plus the fact that I Do Not Want To Be An Entrepreneur Ever). So I can’t sell one (1) artwork because I would be risking becoming homeless. At this point in life I can not risk being considered an entrepreneur. So I guess the answer to that lady is that you can hire me as an employee and pay all the excessive fees and deal with all the other bureaucratic nightmares associated with being an employer - but I’m not selling goods or services. I have read enough articles about artists getting fucked over in this country when they used billing services or acted as “freelancers” (which not a thing that Finnish bureaucracy recognises as a thing). I am not risking it. I can’t.

But I can draw pictures that I like to draw for free. So srsl, HMU if you like a painting and have a face :)

Swedish heavy rockers Besvärjelsen are back with a brand new single ‘Digerliden,’ whose runtime is the perfect marriage of driving doom and straightforward rock. Angel Nation, the melodic metal band founded by the classically trained Finnish singer Elina Siirala (also in Leaves’ Eyes) just released a music video for ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’, the second single from their new album Antares. Antares will be released on CD and digital on April 8 and on limited vinyl on June 3 via Inner Wound Recordings. Elina Siirala of Angel Nation comments on the single: “‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’ tells a creepy tale of a dangerous obsession! Finnish Rioghan is set to release her debut album Different Kinds Of Losses later in 2022 via Inverse Records. The album has been made in collaboration with Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Einar Solberg (Leprous), Teemu Liekkala (ex-Manufacturer’s Pride, Red Eleven) and Teemu Koskela (ex-Celesty). The first single ‘Breath’ is put now with a music video. Rioghan comments on the single: “This song really speaks to me in a personal level, as I have wrote the original poem in a pretty dark place, and somehow me and Teemu captured the essence of it musically too, a lot of polarity, ups and downs and finally some gruesome beauty in acceptance. Tilwixy and Somewhere in Stockholm

Knowing how it all ended, this song kills me. I had so much trouble deciding ona take for the ficlet because so much of it fits with all of them as they driftthrough the world a bit lost. In the end, it had to be Tilde because hemma i Stockholm…

Also, a ficlet is about 2000 words, right?

Her dad bent down and lifted her up. She grabbed his jacket, hard, as shelooked out over the balcony. The height was dizzying, but down there on theground was a sea of small figures that screamed and cheered. She hid her faceagainst her dad’s neck. Her mum spoke softly to her, coaxing her to look outagain and to wave.

Tilde promptly refused. She wasn’t two years old yet.

Her grandfather held her hand. Someone had put out a stool for her to standon. She got up all by herself. There was a sea of people on the ground belowwho cheered and screamed and waved with Swedish flags. She waved back at themwith her entire arm. They cheered even more.

Her grandfather smiled at her. She was four years old and her grandfatherwas her hero.

She held her mum’s hand as they walked two steps behind her grandfather anddad as they accepted cards and gifts from the people gathered on the innercourtyard. Everyone called her name and wanted her to smile. There were cameraseverywhere. Shy, she waved back, hiding a little behind her mum.

It was Sweden’s national holiday. She was six years old and had justrealised that she’d be queen some day.

She stood on the seat of the carriage as it was dragged through the streetsof Stockholm by four horses. All along the way were people cheering and wavingand throwing flowers. She waved to all of them. Her mum tried to get her to sitdown so she wouldn’t fall out, but her dad said not to worry.

It was the Crown prince’s 40th birthday. She was eight years oldand she knew the job of Crown princess was an important one.

There were black-and-white paper copies of the front of Se&Hör taped toevery mirror in the entire school. On it was a picture of her – a still from aTV-clip – with terrible spots and a headline pointing out that puberty cameearly for the adorable little princess. Everyone stared and pointed. Theywhispered.

It took three weeks before there stopped being new copies plastered allover the school. She was twelve and wanted to disappear.

She stood tall next to her parents. She had been dragged to the balcony,but once there, she smiled and raised her hand. She only waved with her handthese days, having learned by looking at her parents and grandparents. Shewondered why on Earth people had waited the entire day on the courtyard just towave at them. Didn’t people have a life? Did she?

Tilde breathed out a sigh of relief when she was allowed back in. She wasfourteen and knew this would be the death of her.

She rose from her seat and walked up to the podium. Her legs were shaking,but not as much as her hands. She looked out over the people gathered in thechurch. A silent sea of black. She looked at her parents. They were bothsolemn. Her dad was dire-eyed, but her mum cried. The arch bishop squeezed herarm a little and made sure the microphone was adjusted. She cleared her throatand looked down on the paper she had brought.

For the first time, she addressed the Swedish people live. She was sixteenand first in line in the Swedish succession according to the new constitution.

Story after story came out about how she was engaged, heartbroken,pregnant. She didn’t read any of them, it was gossip and ridiculous. Herfriends sometimes held dramatic readings from the magazines when they hadparties or sleepovers. Or just time to kill on the bus. Tilde laughed alongwith them, seemingly amused by it and telling them to keep going. For all thepictures the press had on her with her male classmates, they didn’t have asingle one of her with Christina.

Christina’s fingers brushed against her and she blushed. She was seventeenand scared to death she was a lesbian.

Her steps echoed in the Hall of State. It was completely silent and alleyes were on here in her royal blue dress, her Seraphim order sash, and herpearls. In the audience sat the official Sweden, the government, theopposition, representatives for all main religions, representatives from allminorities. There were representatives from the Danish, Norwegian, and Finnishgovernments. They all watched her, their eyes like knives. Tilde’s hands shook,but when she spoke, her voice held steady.

Today, she officially took on the duty of the heir to the throne. She waseighteen and couldn’t hide her eating disorder anymore.

She waved from the balcony, smiling, and let the screams and cheers washover her like a tsunami. It surprised her that she had missed this. A yearaway, a year without any official duties, a year of recovery. She was ready totake this on now.

Her parents stood by her side, smiling and waving as well. She turnedtwenty today and the media called her healthy again.

The world was dying. Polar ice melting, volcanoes erupting, tsunamis,tornadoes, earth quakes, floods, extreme weather. There wasn’t much she couldtalk about in public, but this was a passion she was allowed to have. Peoplewondered if she thought she could save the world and questioned her motives,but she powered on. There were whispers of her hiding from herresponsibilities, of her using this new found interest in the environment to goon expensive trips. They could talk all they wanted, saving the world was morethan photo ops with koalas. It was using the voice and position that was herbirth right to highlight these issues.

It wasn’t that she was running away from Stockholm. She was twenty-two andhad decided what to do with her title.

“Aren’t you the princess who went missing?”

She didn’t go missing. She was kidnapped. The prime minister went missing. Awise person doesn’t argue with her rescuer, though. She felt betrayed, lonely,and stupid. She would have said anything to get out of this dungeon. And shedid. Some people would probably say he took advantage of her – and they mightbe right – but really, she took advantage of him as well. She had sex with astranger she knew couldn’t tell the press.

It was probably a good thing that neither of them knew where it would lead.She was twenty-four and didn’t know where to put her trust anymore.

The house was quiet and dark. Eggsy lead her back to bed after having foundher in the kitchen at 2 a.m.. She called him her knight and wondered what thepress would call him. It was a long time since they had written that she wasengaged, heartbroken or pregnant. At the moment, the press only talked about herPTSD, her sabbatical, her running away from her duties. She didn’t want to talkabout it, she was raised to always smile and say it was fine, so she did.

When she closed her eyes she heard the echoes of a thousand screams andcheers. She was twenty-five and was falling apart.

It was a running joke that Roxy was the perfect combination of the two ofthem. She had Tilde’s upbringing (sort of) and Eggsy’s skillset (in a way). Theupper class lady turned spy. Tilde fought so hard not falling in love with herand utterly failed. She cried when she came out to Eggsy as bisexual. Shecouldn’t stop blushing when she told Roxy. She had no idea what to say whenthey suggested a threeway, but one time, became two times, became three times,became dinners, became movie nights, became vacations…

Tilde had no idea what to make of it, but it felt right. She was twenty-sixand finally starting to be honest with herself.

They kissed on the balcony as the crowd cheered the newlyweds. The Crownprincess had got her knight! Eggsy looked overwhelmed by the wave of lovecoming at them. She smiled, she waved and nudged him to do the same. Part ofher felt sorry for him, that he couldn’t live in this moment the way she could.

Tilde kissed him again. She was twenty-seven and couldn’t remember a timewhen this hadn’t been normal for her.

It was unclear when exactly Roxy had become a part of their relationship.Before the wedding they had called her their girlfriend. After the wedding Roxystarted to call herself Maîtresse-en-titreor just the royal mistress. She still politely declined every invitation tomeet Tilde’s parents and turned down every low-key official event Tilde andEggsy asked her to come to, but Roxy’s first stop after finishing a mission wasalways Stockholm as sure as it was Eggsy’s.

Tilde didn’t understand how she could be so lucky to have both of them inher life. She was twenty-eight and knew that this love affair would be made intomovies once they were dead.

The press wrote speculative article after speculative article about who thewoman in the well-tailored suit that came and went seemingly as she pleased atthe palace. Tilde read none of it, but Eggsy and Roxy read it all, finding itboth amusing and terrifying. Tilde much rather read up on history, royalmistresses, and Swedish law.

She had a plan, but she couldn’t implement it just yet. She was thirty andwondered just how huge a scandal it would be to make Roxy a duchess.

Eggsy held her hands. She rested her forehead against his. Her entire bodytrembled as they stood just out of sight from the crowd on the courtyard. Themurmur of a thousand voices buzzed in the air. She let go even though shedidn’t want to, but she had to do this alone. She had to face this crowd alonewith a man, without her husband, by her side. He would join her later, but shehad to do this alone, because like every public appearance her entire life thiswas symbolical.

The crowed exploded with cheers and scream when they saw her and she raisedher hand to wave, smiling. She was thirty-two and the Queen of Sweden.

It was the 21st century, there weren’t many things her titlestill granted her, but she remained the only person who could grant people apeerage. Malwarebytes (formerly Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, abbreviated as MBAM) is an anti-malware software for Microsoft Windows,[4]macOS, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS that finds and removes malware.[5] Made by Malwarebytes Corporation, it was released in January 2006. It is available in a free version, which scans for and removes malware when started manually, and a paid version, which additionally provides scheduled scans, real-time protection and a flash-memory scanner.

Overview[edit]

Malwarebytes is primarily a scanner that scans for and removes malicious software, including rogue security software, adware, and spyware. Malwarebytes scans in batch mode, rather than scanning all files opened, reducing interference if another on-demand anti-malware software is also running on the computer.[6][7]

Malwarebytes is available in both a free and a premium paid version.[5] The free version can be run manually by the user when desired, whereas the paid version can perform scheduled scans, automatically scan files when opened, block IP addresses of malicious web sites, and scan only those services, programs and device drivers that are currently in use.

On December 8, 2016, Malwarebytes Inc. released version 3.0. This includes protection against malware, ransomware, exploit, and malicious websites.[8]

In November 2019, version 4.0 was released, featuring a new user interface and the Katana scanning engine.[9]

Reception[edit]

In 2010, PC World's Preston Gralla wrote that 'Using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is simplicity itself'.[5]

CNET in 2008 cited Malwarebytes as being useful against the MS Antivirus malware[10] and also awarded it an April 2009 Editor's Choice, along with 25 other computer applications.[11][12]

Mark Gibbs of Network World gave Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 4 stars out of 5 in January 2009 and wrote that 'It does the job and only the lack of a detailed explanation of what it has found stops it from getting 5 out of 5'.[13]

PC Magazine gave Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 3.5 stars out of 5 in May 2010, saying that although it was good at removing malware and scareware, it fell short on removing keyloggers and rootkits.[14] However, the free version got 4.5 stars out of 5 and an Editor's Choice award for free removal-only antivirus software in 2013-2014.[15]

Dispute with IObit[edit]

On November 2, 2009, Malwarebytes accused[16] IObit, a Chinese company that offers similar products, of incorporating the database of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (and several products from other vendors, which were not named) into its security software IObit Security 360. IObit denied the accusation and stated that the database is based on user submissions, and sometimes the same signature names that are in Malwarebytes get placed in the results. They said that they did not have time to filter out the signature names that are similar to Malwarebytes. IObit also stated that Malwarebytes did not have convincing proof, and promised that the databases were not stolen.[17] After the declaration from IObit, Malwarebytes replied that they are not convinced of the argument from IObit.[18][19] Malwarebytes claims to have served DMCA infringement notices against CNET, Download.com and Majorgeeks in order to have the download sites remove the IObit software. IObit said that as of version 1.3, their database has been updated to address those accusations of intellectual property theft made earlier by Malwarebytes.[20][21]

Security vulnerabilities[edit]

On February 2, 2016, Project Zero announced four vulnerabilities in the Malwarebytes flagship product, including lack of server-side encryption for update files and lack of proper payload signing within encrypted data; the combination of which allowed an attacker to recompile the encrypted payload with exploits.[22] Malwarebytes responded one day before disclosure in a blog article detailing the extreme difficulty in executing these attacks, as well as revealing that the announced server-side and encryption issues were resolved within days of private disclosure and were not outstanding at the time Project Zero published their research.[23] Malwarebytes also published information on how to protect current users until a patch was released. This event also resulted in the establishment of a formal bug bounty program by Malwarebytes, which offers up to $1,000 per disclosure as of 2018, depending on severity and exploitability.[24]

Top 20 Non-Metal Albums of 2017

So, while my passion has long been heavy metal, there is so much other great music out there I felt it was worth my time to compile a list of the best of the rest. These twenty albums represent quite a number of genres, but they all share the quality of being awesome…

1. BLACK SEAGULL - Distant Lullabies

After the heart-breaking demise of one of my favorite band of the last two decades, On Trial, I was overjoyed to hear that a couple of ex-members had formed a new band called Black Seagull. While the sound is a bit more mellow and countrified, the songwriting quality is still top-notch and it sounds very much like a logical continuation of the Forever album.

2. ANVIL STRYKEZ - Anvil Strykez

My first impression was this would be a half-assed synthwave late-comer, based on the name, song titles, and album art, but damn if this isn’t one of the most thoroughly engaging albums all around. Vocoded vocals, pure 80s synth and drum machines, well-placed guitars, and a completely memorable and different approach for each tune add up to one hell of a spin.

3. DEPECHE MODE - Spirit

The past few Mode records have been consistently good, if not quite as memorable as Playing the Angel or any of the classics. Spirit is a different beast and my favorite album of theirs since Songs of Faith and Devotion way back in in ’93. The songs “Going Backwards” and “Where’s the Revolution” rank right up there with anything they have penned and the lyrics throughout the album are the perfect reflection of our current state of devolved world affairs.

4. POPPY - poppy.computer

It’s happening again. Some things are weird. Let’s appreciate together. Am I doing this right? Someone sent me this. Can you see it? These are cotton swabs. Poppy loves politics. You are Poppy. I’m Poppy. Everybody wants to be Poppy, Poppy.

5. SNIFF 'N' THE TEARS - Random Elements

One of those groups that, save for one big top-40 hit back in 1979, has flown under the radar but consistently released top-notch albums over the years. Paul Roberts is the singer/songwriter that has helmed the group since the start (and even paints all the album covers) and he still sounds as unique as ever. He writes songs that have a certain melancholy to them that has always struck a chord with me and Random Elements is full of them.

6. DANCE WITH THE DEAD - B-Sides: Volume 1

While synthwave acts like GosT and Carpenter Brut have made a considerable number of fans among metalheads, Dance With the Dead goes the furthest in actually combining the styles. Retro synth lines are still the dominant feature but the chugging, thrashy riffs are nearly as omnipresent and the band add some very well-placed (and well-played) guitar solos on many tracks. This is their latest and they have only gone from strength to strength.

7. THE HAXANS - Party Monsters

This is the kind of thing I would usually roll my eyes at and dismiss straight away but this duo has put together a collection of songs that are so infectious, I can’t stop listening to it. It is the perfect mix of death punk, pop, and Rob Zombie-eque horror metal. Vocalist Ashley Costello is a real gem, too, delivering the campy lyrics with the perfect mix of sensuality and power.

8. KMFDM - Hell Yeah

These die-hard industrial rockers have been releasing slight variations on the same album for the past 25 years or so but, hey, it’s a fucking great album. Hell Yeah isn’t quite up there with WTF?! or WWIII but it’s better than the last couple and their revolutionary calls to action have never been timelier.

9. THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA - Amber Galactic

When it comes to paying tribute to classic AOR from the 70s and 80s, no one does it better and with more enthusiasm than The Night Flight Orchestra. Amber Galactic is not as consistently brilliant as the first two albums but it is still great and the song “Domino” is an instant classic.

10. SIINAI - Sykli

This is Finnish ambient space trance. Repetitive, hypnotic electronics, looping guitars - it’s the perfect soundtrack for some meditation or that long, slow flight into the night. I’m always looking for chill stuff like this that works and, damn, this is executed with utmost perfection.

11. CHEAP TRICK - We're All Alright!

While Cheap Trick made some pretty mediocre records in the 80s and 90s, their 70s albums all stand up as classics and they have done some good work in recent years, too, most notably 2009’s The Latest. We’re All Alright! might be even better and the first half in particular is loaded with some well-crafted and hard rocking tunes.

12. CURSED MOON - Rite of Darkness

This album positively reeks of early-80s death rock in all the best ways. You’ve got driving basslines, reverby guitars, and gloomy synths, with the added bonus of gruff vocals that are more in the vein of early black or death metal. Not a ton of variety from song to song but it’s a highly enjoyable sound that works for a full album.

13. THE MOON AND THE NIGHT SPIRIT - Metanoia

This is a cool Hungarian duo that has been around for a good 15 years now. They make a very enchanting brand of folky darkwave with dreamy melodies and ethereal vocals. This is the first time I have had a chance to hear them since I fell in love with their 2011 album Mohalepte a few years back and I’m pleased to report they haven’t lost any of their charms.

14. LEGEND - Midnight Champion

Duo from Iceland that manages to capture the vibe and quality of classic industrial-rock and infuse it with modern and rather epic touches. The songs don’t just kick in and race to a catchy chorus; you have to be patient. The payoff is always worth it, though, and each songs follows its own dramatic course.

15. ADRENALINE RUSH - Soul Survivor

The debut from these Swedish hard rockers back in 2014 was a captivating collection of tunes that lived up to the band’s name. Soul Survivor is not quite as consistently good but it still has some damn fine tracks. The sound is big, melodic and surprisingly metal at times, with Tave Wanning’s vocals adding a great deal of charm, passion, and distinctiveness to the proceedings.

16. JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - Damage and Joy

I’ll admit I never paid much attention to these Scotts until the Automatic album came out and blew me away. Sadly, they seem to have slowly disintegrated after that, but after a lengthy break, they managed to return with one hell of a comeback record. Damage and Joy has some of the feedback from the early years, some of the electronics of the later years, and all of the sardonic humor and Velvet Underground chord progressions you would hope for.

17. BLONDIE - Pollinator

Blondie has had some good tunes since their reunion in 1999 but this is the first album where nearly every track is a winner. The three most important contributors to the band’s sound - Debbie Harry, guitarist Chris Stein, and drummer Clem Burke - are all still intact and in great form.

18. BLACK MARE - Death Magick Mother

This is the solo project from Sera Timms, the lead vocalist of Ides of Gemini. Here she takes a far more traditional gothic tone with the music, while her vocals take on an even more ethereal feel than in Ides. No individual song really stands out but it all works together beautifully as a complete album.

19. RAINBOWLICKER - I Saw The Light But Turned It Off

My first listen to this Finnish outfit was truly one of those WTF moments. Elements of punk, electro, chiptune, industrial and goth all merge together with some suitably peculiar, snotty vocals to make a fresh sound that is at once annoying and endearing.

20. TARJA - From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas)

Christmas albums have a tendency to be either too campy or too cliched for their own good. Tarja instead presents a collection of traditional (and one original) tunes done up in a suitably dramatic and darkly original fashion. While her solo rock albums have left me rather flat, I love her voice and the orchestral pairing is simply gorgeous. No one sounds like Tarja, no matter how hard they try.

Project "Rename Hetalia's characters"

Hello everyone! Let’s talk about it: one of the most annoying issues about Hetalia are *drum roll* the NAMES, people. Characters’ names/surnames, yes. So, with my friend, I wanted to give them a more “realistic” trait, starting with my nation’s one, Italy. I tried to change ONLY canon names, not those who are not decided yet (such as Belgium’s or Ukraine’s, for example). Some of them remained unchanged, because of specific reasons, but I would be glad if all of you could help me with your home country. Let’s begin!

N.Italy= Francesco Vargas (Francesco is a common name in Italy, also is our St. Patron’s name. As an italian, I’ve never head before of “Feliciano”);

S.Italy= Salvatore Vargas (Salvatore is a typical southern name, very common in South Italy. Also here, Lovino is not an italian name.)

I left the same surname chosen by Himaruya just because “Vargas” is an existent italian surname. (If you want to know, it’s actually the name of a football player);

Germany= Ludwig Schmidt (Only changed the surname here, I think Schmidt is more common in Germany and its sound is similar to the original surname’s one);

Japan= Daisuke Honda (Kiku is a symbolic name, really beautiful and rare, but I’ve thought to give Japan a common name. Honda is a famous japanese surname, nothing to say about it);

USA= George F. Jones (The surname isperfect as it is, I guess. George is for George Washington and F. stays for the same Kennedy’s second name );

UK= Arthur Thompson (I was insecure about his name. At the first time I thought about bames as “Oliver”, because of his popularity and because of Oliver Twist, or “John”. But then I realised that Arthur is good and symbolic as well. So, I’ve changed the surname. Kirkland was pretty anonymous and I wanted something that could have sounded more british);

France= François Bonnefoy (Only transformed Francis, which was the english version of the name, in François, very used and “french”);

Russia= Ivan Vasilyev (Braginski was a polish surname! I’ve chosen something that still sounded like “Braginski”, but at the same time was a real russian surname);

China= Yao Wang (I didn’t found anything to change here);

Spain= Antonio Fernandez García; (Antonio was good, also Fernandez is popular. I’ve only removed Carriedo in order to replace it with García, which is largely used in Spain/countries with a spanish toungue);

Prussia= Gilbert Schmidt (Gilbert was perfect, only changed the family name);

Austria= Roderich Amadeus Wagner (Roderich was ok. I’ve added “Amadeus”, because of Mozart and changed the surname in “Wagner”, still a composer’s name. The combination of this three names gives me some sort of nobility impression);

Hungary= Ágnès Horváth (Totally renamed her. Ágnès is not only cute, but also a bit used, I guess. I found Horváth to be one of the commonest surnames in Hungary);

Canada= Matthew Williams (I don’t see nothing wrong here, maybe it has to be something francophone in there?);

Belarus= Natałlia Arłoŭskaja (Leave it as it was; but changed the way it was written);

Egypt= Muhammad Hassan Al-Nur; (Okay, Muhammad and Hassan are very popular among arabics names, in fact I just leave them to be. But, I found out that Gupta was an Indian surname and also the letter “p” kinda don’t exist in arabic. Soooo I’ve made a list of some cute surname and, at last, Al-Nur won among the others);

Estonia= Eduard Tamm (Tamm is pretty common);

Finland= Timo Hämäläinen (Tino actually wasn’t a finnish name, but TiMo yes. Hämäläinen is rather common and it’s a good alternative to Väinämöinen, that is not a real surname);

Greece= Αlexandros Ypsilanti; (Alexandros is a good, widespread and elegant name. Alexandros Ypsilanti, is also a national hero’s name, during the greek war of indipendence);

Latvia= Raivis Liepa; (Raivis was an actual latvian name, so why don’t keep it? Only the surname changed, Galante was an italian one);

Lithuania= Laurynas Valaitis (I’ve changed everything here, in order to make it realistic, but also to make it sound like “Toris Laurinaitis” as well);

Poland= Feliks Łukasiewicz (It is just normal as it is);

Sealand= Peter Thompson (Only changed his family name);

S.Korea= Kim Yong Soo (Just as it was before);

Sweden= Gustav Lindström (Gustav was the name of many swedish kings. Lindström is commonly used, I think.)

Switzerland= Noah Schweizer (Noah is commonly used in all the cantons, the surname has a german sound);

Turkey= Sadık Adnan (Almost the same. The name is written in turkish)

NATO conducts live-fly training flights over Baltic

On April 20 and 21, air forces from four Allies and two Partners and a NATO E-3A AWACS plane conducted live-fly training flights in segregated training areas and international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

The goal of Exercise Ramstein Alloy 20-1 is to practice procedures and coordination processes among Allies and Partners. Belgium and Poland F-16 fighter aircraft, as well as Lithuania C-27 transport aircraft and a SAR helicopter, German Eurofighter aircraft and an A400M air-to-air refueler operated with Finnish F-18 and Swedish JAS-39 fighters during several scenarios. All aircraft deployments and missions were controlled by the Control and Reporting Centres at Karmelava and Tallinn; a NATO AWACS plane also controlled Polish and German fighters and Belgian and Swedish fighters during their air-to-air combat training.

All participants are flown in from their home bases: Belgian F-16 and Lithuanian aircraft from Siauliai, Lithuania, Polish F-16 from Ämari, Estonia, German Eurofighters and A400M transport aircraft from Germany, and Finnish and Swedish fighters from their respective bases.

On day 1 the central scenario was one that occurs frequently in the airspace over all Allies – a COMLOSS situation where a pilot of an aircraft loses communications with civilian Air Traffic Control. The Lithuanian C-27 transport aircraft simulated such a plane while transiting from Estonian into Finnish airspace. This triggered the response and coordination processes required to handle such an event from registering the COMLOSS aircraft, to launching the fighters and intercepting, identifying and handing over the plane. Finnish F-18 and Polish F-16 fighters conducted this trainings.

During a simulated crew ejection with activation of the Search and Rescue chain, a Belgian F-16 was “rescued” by a Lithuanian Mi-8 SAR helicopter; the German A400M conducted air-to-air refuelling with German Eurofighters and Belgian and Swedish jets executed a practice diversion with fly-by over Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania. “It was a perfect execution of our collective plans,” said the Ramstein Alloy leader planner at the Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany. “We virtually flew all our sorties and achieved all the objectives, making this first day of the exercise a full success,” he added.
