Sketch Showcase Time!!!

Sooooooooo, these are days two and three of my "Learning How-To Draw Pinky and Brain Phase." And, y'all, I think I found my groove! This is attempt 2 of drawing Pinky:

Already, I'm very pleased with this. I mean, this was my attempt to re-create Pinky's design by @goosieboosie. I'm not a digital artist, so I couldn't capture all the majesty of this design perfectly, but I did a decent job. This style allows me to draw Pinky's face a lot easier, and I can get more creative with facial features. I was really happy when I finished this, I kinda freaked out because, he looks great!! I even drew my gender/sexuality headcanons for Pinky beside him, as well as his signature because, why not? I tried to re-draw this picture a few hours later and I made a new discovery:

Sorry for the blurry pic! But yeah, I think I invented my own unique style!! This is the first version of this; there a few changes from my first re-draw. The main changes are Pinky's eyes being rounder, and his ears a little bit larger. I think the base shape of his head is also a little different. I think he looks so derpy!! I was instantly in LOVE with this updated design, so I decided to draw it again and:

The design is a little different again! And also, my first expression!!!! (Ignore the weird as hell erased Pinky head you see; it was a massive failure and I couldn't erase it all :( ) I really think the Pinky on the left turned out better than I thought!! I love his cute little face and his extra floofy head. The second pic is another kind of model pic, but I added a little tongue because it looked cute. I also added the mind bubble and the little blurb just for added effect. I think he looks cute, what do you guys think?

On day three/attempt 3, I actually doodled a Pinky without looking at a reference in one of my books because I was in school. Here's how it turned out:

I LOVE IT!!!! I was so shocked when I finished with this because I think Pinky looks amazing!! It's not perfect, but when compared to day one, it's like night and day. This is my favorite Pinky I've done so far, and it only took my like 25 minutes; what an improvement when compared to over an hour just for one drawing lol! I've made some small changes here, and I will continue to make changes for the time being. I'm still finalizing my style.

Later on, I did something I'm very proud of:

My first full-body Pinky!! I drew the body first and then added a head in later. I also marked certain areas that I might improve upon later, and little personal touches that I added for fun. Yeah, I think his head is a little too tall, but I'll fix that. I implemented some unique elements such as his muzzle area being based on the OG show, the tufts of fur on his head being longer, the chest fur, his feet being stuffed-animal like, his short legs (which will probably be longer in the future), and his tail being from the reboot. I am currently working on hands; they're just not ready yet. I'm very excited to see my own personal style being formed. I like all the touches I added and I'm excited to maybe work on some screenshot re-draws and other things like that.

Here are some hand sketches. Hand are EXTREMELY HARD for me so I'm trying to get an idea of what I want to do. I was either thinking of the one on the left (larger fingers, rounder shapes) or the one on the right (more angular, slimmer fingers). Idk, which hand style do yo guys think would work better?

I'm very proud of the progression I made on these designs. I'm currently planning on drawing Brain very soon and I will be doing screenshot re-draws, experimenting with changes to eye shape, and more expressions. I'm also writing still (new fic currently a wip), and I'm very excited to be contributing more to the fandom!! Let me know where I can improve and some tips on how to draw their hands. Also, special thanks to @cosmicangel139 for the drawing tips for Brain!! You are amazing and I will definitely keep those tips in mind!!!!

...sitting still in minecraft to get mmd background is so smart i was over here teaching myself to export chunks through mininator to blender to pmd fighting for my life getting textures to look right. god.

so, it really depends what you want from your background. if you don't care about like. the small animations like candles and torches then you can literally just take a screenshot. or you can sit and record for the background. but that severely limits your camera options. you cannot move the camera, and you need to make sure that the mmd camera matches the minecraft one's angle or it'll look weird.

i used this strategy for one of my first minecraft mmds (and actually probably my first public mmd akjshdsda) but actually instead of importing it directly into mmd as a background .avi i chromakeyed out the background, as i did with my most recent one. the first time was because of hijinks where i didn't save the motion edits after exporting, but then decided to change the background. and i didn't want to redo them.

this time was because i couldn't figure out how to use a background image with raymmd.

however, using an image does have the benefits of "i don't actually have access to this world right now but i do have a screenshot from a youtube video!" which i did here.

I use mineways to export portions of minecraft worlds to blender, but i've only used it like twice. it was. a bit of an ordeal because the materials weren't linked to the textures properly so i just. ported the mmd model and motion to blender. and rendered it there. you can see the results of that here, but it's not grreat. because i didn't know blender as well as i knew mmd. which honestly wasn't even that much at the time.

the second time i tried to use mineways i bit the bullet and figured out what the issue was. i had to go through each block and fix the texture paths. one by one. it had the issue of the textures being blurry but i think it was very much worth it. fancy camera movements really added to the fun, and by this point i'd learnt raymmd well enough to get some decent looking shading

now the reason i chose to go with the stationary camera method this time was partially i don't wanna fix all the textures again,,,,, but also the fact that it was a fully enclosed space. i wasn't certain how well mmd would respond to that, and it seemed like it was more effort than it was worth to try and fight the lighting. and i wanted to emulate lizzie's lighting as closely as possible, so i figured that'd be easiest in minecraft itself. even if the amethysts are considered?? emissive in my game but not hers?? so they're WAY brighter in my shader. i don't know. how to fix it without turning out all emissive light. which she CLEARLY has on with the lava and lanterns. so. rip me ig.

ToT AU: What if there are small train cars that contain memories where Ingo tries to remember things, but the details are a jumbled mess. Unovan pokemon don't look right, cars look like weird blocks. Friends have a mixture of features from people he knew from Hisui and their actual features. Maybe they're a jumbled mess because MG Emmet stopped Ingo's mind from trying to sort the memory out.

Oh yes OP! Lots of the disconnected traincars need to be reconnected so that Ingo actually remembers them. Features of things are blurry and sometimes they’re a little off, because someone doesn’t always remember every single thing going on around them in memories.

A lot of the things you described I could see happening. In PLA Ingo mentions all he could remember of Chandelure was that it wielded flames with mastery, and that the voltorb line in Hisui seem different than the ones he remembers. But he can’t recall what they’re actually like. So like you mentioned, pokemon he can’t entirely remember are going to look strange at first, until the cars are reconnected and fixed the way they should be.

Things that make up settings in memories, like cars, can look strange as well. Settings can look unfinished; Ingo won’t remember every detail about everything around him all of the time.

And for people; just like Pokémon, he’s shown to have a hard time remembering what people like Emmet were like exactly. Ingo didn’t mention it so I’m wondering if he even remembers Emmet’s smile.

"Y/N?" Pin frowned as he saw you swaying at the yard. You looked like you were drunk, but it wasn't like you to drink. You turned around, your eyes puffy and red. "Are you okay?"

"They killed Snow White, and then The Grinch. The Spinach Man too." you sobbed.

"What?" he asked, and suddenly it felt like your whole mood changed.

"Did you know that you're cute when you try not to blush?" you giggled and wobbled forward, almost falling into his arms. "It makes you look like... a tomato. Or oh, a bottle of ketchup. But a cute one."

You grinned, and immediately threw up, causing Pin jumping backward. And the next moment, you actually fell forward, but fortunately Pin knew to expect it. He caught you, dropping everything in his hands to lower you down gently, and the people at the stable stopped what they were doing, gathering near you and him. "Dad!"

Ted hurried to the scene, seeing you in his son's arms, your eyes rolling back. "Y/N? Y/N, can you hear me?"

"Yeah yeah grandpa. I'll do the dishes." you muttered before your eyes fluttered shut. Pin looked at his father worriedly, and Ted helped him to lift you up.

"They're sick. They were weird today too and wouldn't let me to check their fever. They've been working too hard. Call Arthur." Ted told Pin and Pin took out his phone immediately.

You slowly felt yourself coming back to consciousness, feeling pillows and blankets all around you, and something damp on your forehead. You opened your eyes, but the light was too much and you squeezed them shut again, groaning.

On that moment, you heard shuffling from beside you and felt a hand grasping yours. You managed to open your eyes again, your vision showing a blurry form of Pin.

"Pin?" you croaked out, and the boy brought his hand to your cheek, stroking lightly. "What happened?"

"You're alright." he whispered, his voice relieved. As your vision became clearer, you saw how deep his eye bags were, and how dark the area under his eyes was.

"What happened?" you repeated your question.

Pin sighed. "You were really sick. You threw up and fainted. I brought you here because you'd get the best treatment from Arthur."

"You mean the butler who tried to poison you?" you joked and tried to sit up, but your chuckles immediately turned to violent coughs. Pin immediately took out a bucket, but your coughing calmed down within a few seconds. So instead, he fixed the blanket, pulling it up to your neck.

"Don't fuss. I'm alright now." you chuckled. "And I'll get a heatstroke if you'll put any more blankets on me."

He paused and sighed, slumping on the chair beside his bed. You both were quiet for a moment.

"Pin?" you broke the silence. "What is it?"

Pin glanced at you briefly and brought his hand to his lips momentarily, before he turned to look at you.

"I might be having feelings for you." Pin blurted out. "I've had them for a while."

You stared at your best friend and felt your cheeks heating up. What did he mean? He couldn't. He was surely joking.

So you rolled your eyes and scoffed, turning your gaze to your lap. "Yeah right. Very funny, Pin."

You saw a flash of hurt going by in Pin's eyes. "I'm serious."

You blinked, raising your head to look at him again. You gulped, just staring at him.

"Really?" you finally managed to squeak out, and Pin nodded, his cheeks turning slightly pink.

"Yeah. Dad has been pushing me into telling you, and a few days ago... I was so afraid. You were talking nonsense and dad seemed worried too. But fortunately Arthur knew what to do." he told you and took out your phone from his pocket, handing it to you. "Your family has been trying to call you, but I told them that you're not in a condition to talk. They've been really worried, you should probably call or text them."

You nodded, took your phone from Pin and snorted. "Great, my phone is messed up. Did it fall on the ground when I fainted?" you asked.

Pin frowned, taking your phone from you and you pointed at the date. "It claims it's Thursday."

Pin glanced at you. "It is Thursday. You were being delirious and probably that's why you don't remember anything. I had to feed you and help you use the bathroom." he sighed and your eyes widened in shock.

"What was wrong with me?" you asked.

"You were overworking even though you were sick. Promise me you won't do that again. You really scared all of us. You scared me." he told you and took a hold of your hand again. Suddenly, you realized what Pin had said moments earlier.

"You said you have feelings for me." you muttered. Pin nodded with a sigh. You smiled at him. "The best way to wake up in a while. But I'll kill my brains if this is a dream."

Pin blinked at you, almost not believing what you had just said. You laid your other hand on top of his and squeezed lightly, causing Pin breaking into a wide grin.

Also, please be mindful of the fact that I'm not saying all wards are bad, some are good while others aren't, it really depends on you and how you view your experience.

(Y/N) rested his head against the window, staring at the blurry trees. He could hear Lucie's distant chatter as she tried to start a conversation.

"What happened to Kurtz?" He asked, lifting his head and looking at her. The boy he was supposed to protect, his younger brother, was dead. Lucie swallowed, hazel eyes flickering over to him.

"He.. Some crazy guy killed him." (Y/N) looked at the road in front of them. (Y/N) had lived on the Northside with his aunt after his parents deemed him crazy. His aunt took him in, having the disorder as well. She passed over giving in to the tumor in her brain and Lucie, his older cousin, took custody of him. During that period, (Y/N) had learned that his parents had overdosed and that his brother got addicted. Those two things combined with his disorder drove him to almost end his own life but Lucie found him in time. Sheriff Keller advised her to send (Y/N) to a psych ward until he was better. He didn't feel better.

"We can go to Pop's, get a burger and a milkshake." Lucie said, offering a smile. (Y/N) stayed silent. Her smile dropped.

"Please.. Talk to me, (N/N). I haven't seen you in almost a year." Lucie begged, glancing at him.

'Who's fault is that?' (Y/N) chuckled. Lucie shot him an old look before realization took over.

"You haven't taken your meds, have you?" Lucie sighed, one hand gripping the wheel as she ran a hand through her hair.

'Grab the wheel.'

"No." (Y/N) mumbled. Lucie licked her lips, thinking about what to say.

"What are they saying?" She asked. (Y/N) shifted his attention onto the trees again, choosing not to respond. Having dealt with her own mother being schizophrenic, Lucie was used to hearing someone talking to themselves or seeing things. She wasn't used to a completely emotionless person though. The doctors called it flattening.

"Okay, how about this, I go get some Pop's and you can rest at home. Sounds like a good idea?" She asked.

"Okay." Lucie smiled, happy that she got a response.

"Great. Maybe Betty could keep you company? She was your friend, right?"

"No." Lucie glanced at her cousin, pressing her lips into a thin line.

"Well, she asked about you." Lucie pulled up to their house, giving him a small smile. (Y/N) got out of the car, getting his stuff and taking the house key from her. He walked up to the porch, unlocking the door and entering. Everything was still the same. With a sigh, (Y/N) went up the stairs and entered his old bedroom. It was clean and tidy. On his bed lied a small note and a jacket. He picked it up, looking at the note.

'Welcome home! From Betty C.'

(Y/N) looked at the jacket. It had a design of a band/singer he liked.

'Burn it.' (Y/N) rolled his eyes, ignoring the voice. He looked over at his window, approaching it and gazing at Archie's house. Betty and Archie sat on the steps, chatting. Betty turned her head, noticing him. She gave a small wave. (Y/N) closed the curtains. He fell back onto his bed, staring up at the ceiling.

"I'm sorry." He whispered, looking at Kurtz. The male stayed silent, arm draping over the stomach of his older brother. Even if Kurtz was dead, (Y/N) could at least see him in his hallucinations.

"I should've been there for you."

'He's dead because of you.'

"I should've stayed."

'You were a terrible brother.'

"I love you." (Y/N) whispered. Kurtz pressed a kiss to his forehead, disappearing when someone knocked on the door. (Y/N) stayed in bed, hoping they'd go away.

"(Y/N)? It's Betty!" (Y/N) grunted, getting up and leaving his room. He headed towards the front door and opened it, looking at the two friends.

"Can we come in?" Betty chirped, tilting her head. (Y/N) wanted to say no but maybe the two would keep the voices at bay. He nodded, stepping back and letting them in. (Y/N) closed the door, going into the livingroom and sitting down.

"Did you get my gift?" Betty asked, smiling. (Y/N) hated how positive and energetic she was.

"Yeah."

'She doesn't care about you.'

"I know." (Y/N) mumbled, fiddling with the sleeve of his hoodie. Betty and Archie glanced at each other.

"How was the psych ward?" Archie asked. (Y/N) stared at the ginger.

"Boring." He replied.

"Well, at school we're thinking about starting a club for people with mental illnesses to feel accepted and know others are here for them." Betty said, glancing at Archie.

"We were wondering if you wanted to join? Talk about your experiences?" Betty asked. (Y/N) looked at her.

'They're scared of you. You're a threat.' (Y/N) shrugged.

"Okay." Betty's eyes lit up.

"Great! We'll see you at school." She smiled, standing up. (Y/N) leaned back, letting her know that he didn't want a goodbye hug. Betty and Archie left with small waves. (Y/N) stayed seated on the couch, not really knowing what to do. He was used to being isolated so being able to leave the house was weird. (Y/N) curled up on the couch, ignoring the small shadowy figures that he saw out of the corner of his eye and stared at the tv as if it was on. A sight to behold when Lucie returned.

(Y/N) stared at the school. The people who knew him watched him or whispered to their friends.

"Have a good day." Lucie called. (Y/N) ignored her, hearing the car drive off. He took a deep breath in and pulled down his hoodie sleeves. (Y/N) kept his gaze low as he walked up to the school and entered. Newbies who didn't know him were quickly told who he was. People steered clear of his path. (Y/N) got his schedule as the bell rang and went to class. The teacher knew who he was.

"I'd like to welcome back Mr. (L/N) to Riverdale High." The teacher flashed a pity filled smile.

'Strangle her.' For once, (Y/N) wanted to do exactly what the voice said.

"Please take a seat bedside Mr. Fogarty." She said, motioning to a Serpent.

"Do I have to?" He grunted. The teacher blinked, glancing down at her seating chart.

"Um.. I can change your seat tomorrow." She said, a little nervously. (Y/N) hummed and approached Fogarty, taking a seat beside him. (Y/N) opened his notebook, taking some notes but eventually resorted to doing doodles of the shadowy figure in the corner of the room.

"Dark." The tan male beside him mumbled. (Y/N) looked at him blankly.

"I'm Fangs." Fangs said, extending his hand. (Y/N) looked back at his notebook.

"My brother almost killed you." Was all (Y/N) said. Fangs blinked and it clicked in his head. (Y/N) rested his head on his fist. His mind was blank and he wasn't processing anything the teacher was saying.

"I can give you the notes." Fangs offered suddenly. (Y/N) blinked, looking at him. His gaze shifted onto Kurtz, who stood behind Fangs, looking rather annoyed. (Y/N) looked back at him, searching for some sort of pity in his eyes but only found kindness.

"Whatever." (Y/N) replied, noting that the shadowy figure had disappeared. He stood when the bell rang and went to his next class. Nobody spoke to him. Some people glanced and whispered. It was like that until his last period. (Y/N) looked at Jughead when the male sat besides him.

"Hey."

"Go fuck yourself." Jughead decided not to speak with him for the remainder of class. (Y/N) was relieved to hear the bell but it was short lived. Betty, Archie, and some chick entered the classroom and greeted him.

"You must be (Y/N), heard a lot about you." Veronica said.

"All bad things probably." (Y/N) replied, making it clear he wasn't interested in a friendship.

"Well, I brought the idea up to our principle and we got the all clear." Betty said, smiling. (Y/N) really couldn't care less. His eyes flickered to the figure in the corner.

"What's your disorder again?" Veronica asked.

"None of your fucking buiness." (Y/N) replied automatically. Veronica blinked, taken a back.

"Okayy, let's go to the club room we were able to claim." Jughead said, trying to ease the arising tension. (Y/N) crossed his arms. What a shit show.

Dunno if you've ever talked about/answered this, but may I ask what you use to make your beautiful gifs?! I'm about to pull my hair out trying to prep my sets for "Densi-mber" so that they all actually move like they're supposed to without looking like completely awful quality. (I obviously do not want to take away from the amazing work you do, but yearn to make them as pretty-ful as you do!) BTW --- all your comments on every episode totally crack me up ! Love em!

I use photoshop CS5 portable, an old crappy version that honestly doesn’t have all the working features, but it does the job just fine (i got a copy of it off my friend who was doing gameart design in uni, lol). 

As for the gifs themselves, i’m not sure what you mean by looking awful quality, but here’s a few things i normally consider (i apologize if this gets super wordy, i’m not great at explaining things and some of this involves a lot of nonsensical numbers);

1) If you mean how your gifs look uploaded onto tumblr, the sizes of the gifs in pixels make a massive difference on how a set looks once uploaded. Tumblr’s image layout is 540px across, and gifs will only look their optimum quality if they are exactly 540px across the entire picture window. If your gif is 450 across, tumblr will stretch it to be 540 and the quality will visibly diminish. Likewise, if your gif is 600px, tumblr will shrink it and it will also diminish it’s quality on your dash. If you have more than one gif in a line, your set still needs to come to 540px together, each gif needs to be 268px wide to display at the optimum quality. Three gifs in a row needs two sized at 177px and the third 178px to come up to 540px across, any pixel number that doesn’t add up to 540 total will make tumblr adjust the gif size and it will corrupt the gif quality. 

One single gif (a 540px one designed to sit on it’s own) can be up to 3mb large, anything bigger and it won’t play). If you have two 268px gifs next to each other, they also cannot exceed the 3mb limit, each gif can be whatever mb size you want, but together they cannot exceed the 3mb. 

(if that made zero sense to anybody, i suggest google image searching ‘tumblr image dimensions’ b/c people have made visual guides). 

2) Colouring on your gifs makes a massive difference, and this show is /awful/ to colour. I have 4 different types of colouring for opps alone because the lighting is different from every filming angle in the room. I can’t really go into specifics literally just because i don’t have specific examples, but in general, having it too bright pixelates darkened areas horribly, sometimes it’s better to just make a gif look super shadowy by keeping dark parts dark than it is to brighten it so much it looks like a pixel storm. The higher quality screencaps you have to make gifs from, the more you can brighten them/edit them in general before they become pixelated, over-colouring low quality content next to never ends well. (but i do all this on photoshop, idk how to colour using anything else). If you’re using PS, i recommend finding a ps resources blog, downloading a couple of psd’s that people have made for free use that you like and learning how they work from those. I started off using free ones and once i’d figured out what did what I made up my own ones. 

3) what do you use to get screencaps for your gifs?? I personally use UMplayer because it’s the only program i found that will automatically take gif quality screencaps from DVD’s (supposedly vlc and kmplayer will also do this for people, but it never worked on my laptop when i tried, so umplayer it is). I just play the scene in the window while i set the program to cap it enough times a second as it plays, so that when i gif from the caps, the movement isn’t choppy, even if you craft the perfect colouring and sharpening and timing when making the gif, if you don’t have enough screencaps per second of footage, it’s still going to be choppy. 

4) But also, some scenes just aren’t very giffable? Like, i really want to gif that scene where Eric calls Nell ‘Nellverine’ but when the camera is on his face as he says it, he’s in motion the entire time, if what you want to gif doesn't have a single screencap that’s not blurry, your gif is just gonna be a blur. Can’t really fix that, i mean, maybe people super amazing at giffing can, but i’ve never managed it. 

5) sharpening. I personally like definition on my gifs, so i tend to sharpen a lot, but some people prefer smooth gifs, it’s each to their own. But, also, very low quality screencaps will not sharpen, they will only make the gif grainy. The higher pixel size your individual caps are, the more you can afford to sharpen, but it is literally on a case by case basis, i will sharpen 2 different scenes from one episode differently depending on how it looks, it’s entirely personal judgement/taste tbh, but attempting to sharpen something that is tiny in quality will only make it look worse. 

6) frame speed. I am a lazy ass who will only set my frames at 0.1 or 0.2 depending on a scene because they’re presets and i don’t have to take the time to type in speeds like 0.18 or something equally fiddly, but you have to judge what works best for the gif you’re making. Conversation scenes i normally set at 0.2 but like, action scenes i normally set at 0.1. But that’s not a solid rule, it’s just my personal norm. 

7) there are specific dimensions for gifsets that look more attractive on this site, if i’m doing say, an 8 gif set 2x2, i will make my gifs 268x180px, which is about what i think looks best on this format. Personally anything shorter than 170px high in that situation looks a little weird (unless you’re deliberately trying to do a panorama type gif). 

anyway that’s all i could think of from the top of my head (and also probably too detailed of an explanation, i do that a lot i’m sorry), but i think those are probably what things that will most of the time disrupt gifs. And thank you!!!! but feel free to ask anything, i’m not a graphc making how-to hoarder, i don’t understand people refusing to help other people making them under the guise of creator secrets? It just seems weird and like a weird form of gatekeeping to me, the more the merrier right? So i’m open to trying to help anytime :D
