a someone who loves the original jungle book, i absolutely love the live action version
i actually think its better but ONLY through the lens of already seeing the original
it felt like a natural progression from a child version of the movie to a more adult and SCARY version
shere khan terrified me as a child. his bright green eyes in that one scene have stuck with me for just shy of 25 years, i didnt think there was any way for a live action shere khan could achieve that same impact, especially now that im an adult and not 5 lol
but!! he did!!!!!
idris elbas performance as shere khan was absolutely phenomenal!! he gave shere khan a more serious version of his original gravitas, he was TERRIFYING to me BECAUSE he perfectly embodied the horrible psychopathy of shere khan while making the character new and his own, it wasnt a cheap imitation it was a respectful and serious homage
and you know what?? SO WAS CHRISTOPHER WALKENS KING LOUIE!!!! ive been scared of monkeys and apes for my entire life, especially chimps and orangutans, i was scared of king louie as a child and that fear was borne of knowing how terrifying real orangutans are juxtaposed with how nonthreatening he was in the animated movie
christopher walken was SCARY as king louie!!! ive never liked i wanna be like you as a disney song, its never interested me tbh but christopher walkens version? i love it. more importantly i REMEMBER it. because it sent chills down my spine! they leaned into how terrifying REAL orangutans and monkeys are and it worked SO WELL!!!
i think the decision to remove most of the songs from the live action worked really well bc it made i wanna be like you even more terrifying and highlighted why its scary - monkeys and apes are so intelligent, they will be like us one day, that song in the live action highlights the mix of human intelligence and animal violence that, to me, orangutans kinda embody
i think the casting of the live action jungle book was absolutely excellent and i think most of the choices they made really worked! it hit me way harder than the original ever did - i wasnt that interested in it beyond being terrified of shere khan and king louie lmao its never been on my list of faves - but the live action has firmly planted itself in my like,, okay not my top 10,, top 20 definitely tho lmaoo
is it perfect? no. however i think its a resounding success as a live action remake bc fundamentally your suspension of disbelief changes from cartoon to love action, and the movie kept that in mind while also capitalizing on how scary wild animals can be and how uncanny valley and unsettling these live action remakes often are
its a great movie!! i absolutely love it for what it is and for what it gave me as someone who saw the movie as a kid and was so scared by the main villain and ig sub villain. its so good, and i think its vastly better than the original

Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest--
alright! so! early robin hood ballads and narratives don't have an origin story for little john, but a later ballad (robin hood and little john) does. they fight on a bridge in it, but I like looking at illustrations, so I've swapped out the bridge for that tree peaking out of the panel in the first panel bc I enjoy louis rhead's illustrations a lot.
this is some kind of introduction scene after they fight and climb out of the river!

Danny and (a recently revived) Jason move into an apartment together, they live right next to each other too.
The thing with this, however, is that the both of them?
They goddamn hate each other.
If murder was not illegal, they would genuinely kill each other. But since it is, they settle for the next best thing, just beating each other up on sight.
At least, until the landlord told them to not fight on their property and if they were to do it out of sight, so they don't scare away any more potential clients.
They've already scared away more than 10.

I know some people may feel a little sad about Normal’s epilogue moment but yknow I thought it was nice. He and the others went through such an intense series of events. He clearly was struggling with self image issues and likely more. And he still is.
Growing up didn’t fix that. And that’s okay. That’s something a lot of people grapple with long into their adulthood. Something about it was kind of refreshing to see that shown. Things aren’t perfect. They likely never will be. But for that night, he allows himself let loose with his friends again.

i truly will never understand how cheating on ur partner is so common and yet polyamory is widely seen as gross and wrong. so *checks notes* having sex with someone you're not in a relationship with is bad unless *double checks notes* unless you do it behind their back without their consent?
