Photos from the Tokyo Grand Guignol stage play Galatia Teito Monogatari, based loosely on the Teito Monogatari serial of epic dark sci fi occult horror books. Despite sharing its basis with a greatly influential series which spawned several films (the first Teito Monogatari adaption even featuring special effects designed by H.R. Giger) and a set of animated horror films, Galatia remains the most obscure of the Tokyo Grand Guignol’s productions. Very sparse information of its contents exist online. On one specific page I found a month back, a (very poorly translated) English synopsis describes the play as being a story about a machine that destroys a major city in Japan. It’s unclear if the machine they’re referring to is in reference to a humanoid robot or a more generalized weapon. It’s said that in the play, Kyusaku Shimada appears as a mad scientist who creates the oxygen destroyer from Godzilla (1954). In a description of the ending, the finale depicts a scenario where the character Yasunori Katō (a demon that manifests itself as an imperial army First Lieutenant) welcomes one of the characters to what he refers to as the “new imperial city”. He reveals to the character a supernatural landscape where various children’s toys and dolls across the stage come to life and move around on their own, all to the sounds of marching drums and claps of thunder. All images were digitized by yours truly, with the sources being volume 28 of Yaso magazine and the Suehiro Maruo-focused magazine Only You, which features a digest version of Galatia’s screenplay. Of course, with the screenplay (or at least a condensed version of it) in my possession, I plan to translate it to English some way or another down the line. This adaption would help start off Shimada’s professional acting career, with Shimada having his first major cinematic role as Yasunori Katō in the film Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis. As mentioned though, Shimada doesn’t act as Katō in the Tokyo Grand Guignol version. That role was instead designated to Yaguruma Kennosuke, who would later appear as Raizou in the original performances of Lychee Hikari Club.
Tumblr media
Yaguruma Kennosuke as Raizou in Lychee's December 1985 performance, apprehending the Marquis de Maruo (performed by Suehiro Maruo) when he enters the Hikari Club's hideout. Kennosuke is on the right side of Maruo, with Hiroyuki Tsunekawa (Zera) standing aside Kennosuke with his bag of lychee fruits. As a side note, you've gotta appreciate how despite then being well into a Maruo-flavored era of underground culture, there are still the occasional callbacks to Terayama's legacy, hence the clock that Katō is seen holding in the first photo.

Interesting indie horror anthology with Japanese actors and French directors. Very gory, very campy (especially the CGI), and very much entertaining if you're not looking too deep for story.

2023 BL/GL/QL Round-Up Post
I thought for posterity I'd post a reflection on everything I watched that completed in 2023. For me, that means anything that started in 2022 but the last episode was in 2023 is on this list, but anything that will still be airing after 31 December 2023 11:59 my time (EST) is not on this list, even if the bulk of the show did air in 2023.
A few stats:
110 discrete pieces of content (series/films)
clocking in at est. 600 hours of NEW BL/GL content only
from 9 different countries (Cambodia [1], Philippines [3], Hong Kong [1], Japan [18], Korea [19], Myanmar [1], Taiwan [6], Thailand [56], Vietnam [7])
~50% of the content I watched on this list is from Thailand
~85% of my content was on YouTube [40%], GaGaOoLaLa [23%] and iQIYI [21%].
[Note that this year a lot of older GMMTV shows moved off of YouTube and onto Viki so if you're looking at these stats to decide what to pay for, this won't account for that.]
This doesn't include re-watches or catching up on old shows [e.g. I re-watched Love Sick, My Ride the Series, Semantic Error, ITSAY/IPYTM, Our Dating Sim at least 3 times lol, and anything with a s2 I re-watched s1 to prep, among others, watched Fujoshi Ukkari Gei no Kokuru (2019) for the first time] or non-QL [e.g. Heartstopper s2, Our Flag Means Death s2, Taskmaster s. 15 & 16, Uncanny Counter s2, One Piece s1, etc.] but does include films as well as shows, though I don't count special episodes separately (so Wedding Plan counts once, though I watched both the show and the special).
I hope you all appreciate that with this much content, and with my general brand of being unable to make decisions, I really struggled to narrow down a top 10 list. What follows is the best I could do lol
Top 20 Shows I'd Recommend From This Year:
Moonlight Chicken
Our Dating Sim
Bed Friend
The Eighth Sense
La Pluie
Sing My Crush
Tokyo in April Is...
Wedding Plan
Laws of Attraction
I Cannot Reach You
I Feel You Linger in the Air
What Did You Eat Yesterday S2
I Became the Lead in a BL Drama
If It's With You
Love in Translation
Our Dining Table
My Personal Weatherman
My Beautiful Man: Eternal
My School President
Be My Favorite
+10 I liked but I would only recommend with caveats:
Love Class 2
The New Employee [for the Rainbow Rice Cakes]
Let's Eat Together Aki and Haru
Never Let Me Go
Kiseki: Dear to Me
Unintentional Love Story
The Day I Loved You
End of the World with You
A Breeze of Love
Jack O'Frost
Bonus: Not a BL but worth calling out:
One Room Angel
Midnight Museum
Grand Guignol
The Warp Effect
Sadly, of the GLs that aired this year, I wouldn't recommend any of them. The best one was Show Me Love, which was not actually good but had very gorgeous women and a LOT of flirting.
The other huge thing that happened this year was that I stopped lurking! Thanks specifically to @lurkingshan and @bengiyo demanding everyone start talking about La Pluie, because they got me to post my first meta post. And because I started actually talking to people, I started making actual friends, and participated in organizing things like the Be My Favorite clown checkpoint for ep 11. I also disappeared a month because of life, and am still catching up on everything I intended to write this year. But it's been really rewarding finding this corner of tumblr with likeminded people who like good shows, like to think about these shows, and who are interested in talking about them in a way that's insightful and respectful.
It's been a long time since I felt comfortable enough participating actively in a fandom, and I just want to say to everyone I've interacted with this year: Thank you!
Full list under the cut for anyone curious! [Mostly in order it aired but may be slightly off].

An assortment of production images from the original performances of Litchi Hikari Club, all of which were personally tracked down and digitized by yours truly. The flash photography images with the blue tint were from the original 1985 Christmas performance as it was documented in June Magazine, whilst the rest are presumed to be from the later 1986 rerun which omits certain details like Suehiro Maruo’s cameo and the original Christmas-themed ending. Some further information about the play’s history along with direct audience recollections can be read in my post regarding the Futurist parallels of Litchi Hikari Club. Please credit with any use.

this isn't helpful or interesting in any way but whenever u say swimmers irt usami it reminds me of the tokyo grand guignol (1980s japanese undergound theater troupe) mercuro script that was roughly translated in english where a man living in the students' classroom blackboard orders them to jack off and when they all cum in unison he starts swimming in their cum pool. i know this is in no way related to what ur actually referring to but i thought id share regardless for unknowable reasons
good luck out there
oh no dont worry its interesting all right. and its not completely unrelated. cum is cum and sperm is sperm and we are sperm.

i read litchi hikari club (lychee ☆ light club), mostly bc it seems to be a touchpoint among a certain species of guro fan like that polish girl I reblogged earlier. it was interesting - apparently it was based on a play at the Tokyo Grand Guignol theatre, a spinoff of the famous French one, and the story was as saturated in gore and sexual violence as you'd expect from 'Grand Guignol'. it is about essentially a death cult of teenage boys at a boys' school, obsessed with youth and beauty, who create a Frankenstein's Monster-like robot with the purpose of kidnapping girls, but to get it to function, they give it the belief that it's human. the leader of the group, Zera, fancies himself a chessmaster but gets increasingly paranoid about betrayal, demanding more and more members of the club be executed; the other boys execute various plots to frame each other. the girl they kidnap is called Kanon, and she forms a relationship with the robot while playing at unconsciousness when the club members are around; this eventually builds into an escape attempt but of course it all goes wrong and nearly every character ends up bleeding out in a flooded basement. a lot of these murderboys are gay, and the story of Elagabulus is invoked. Zera's design, with his star gloves, blatantly draws on the villain of Teito Monogatari (Doomed Megalopolis); he's also low key a total wehraboo and peppers his speech with German. the art style is very precise and refined, emphasising the lips, and what with all the gakuran uniforms, it is especially calling to mind classic ero-guro artists like Suehiro Maruo and Takato Yamamoto.
all in all, I'm sure I'm not catching even half of what this manga is doing - not helped by the available translation for issues 7 and 8 being very poor. but I do think it's curious how these symbols get pulled out of context as a small but recognisable international fandom grows around them - gakuran becoming... not so much something that people would wear at an old fashioned school and a symbol of the old imperial regime, but the thing that femboys wear to sexily torture each other. I think people mostly come to this through visual kei, since there's a visual kei group themed around this manga and more generally, a few visual kei groups reach into ero-guro for their aesthetic. the other effect is one of a missing piece falling into place; I can be like "ohhh that's what YoRHa Boys was riffing on".
