🌟I'm incredibly proud to announce that the Art of Amphibia will be available for purchase on November 17th this year, wherever books are sold🌟
This beautiful hardbound book will contain 224 pages full of carefully curated artwork from all three seasons. We're talking never before seen conceptual sketches, storyboards, paintings, written testimonials from the crew and much, much more. I'm so grateful to TOKYO POP for continuing to partner with us to get these Amphibia books made. This one in particular is a dream come true - artwork for animated TV shows like ours is too often left forever archived, never to be enjoyed or treasured.
Please look forward to the book. The team working on it is the same as Marcy's Journal so you KNOW it's gonna be good. --- Matt Braly

I'm glad even Henry agrees that a Nightmare prequel is a more interesting prospect than a sequel movie - there's a lot of backstories and worldbuilding they can do with the characters and whatnot. Just seems funny with the timing of the release of The Battle for Pumpkin King.

4 Supernatural BL to Read if You Liked Mignon
The supernatural vampire Boy’s Love, Mignon, debuted a little over two weeks ago and I’m still thinking about it. In general, I don’t usually lean into supernatural romances. Every now and then though, I do find some that I become obsessed with. I find that I enjoy supernatural stories that have a good balance of romance with fantasy elements. Too much fantasy and I’m getting confused, and too…

Mountain Vengeance - Mako Sato
This post is probably the quickest post I've made after the reveal of something (read: I figured this out last night lol) but I think it's funny enough to deserve a post so soon (read: I really want people to know this).
I'm sure at this point most people are aware of what Initial D Mountain Vengeance is, but for those of you who aren't here's a basic rundown. In the early 2000s, Tokyopop commissioned a PC game to be made based on the Initial D license. The game was made by Canopy Games and released by ValuSoft, and it is famously dreadful. From it's poor gameplay to it's limited soundtrack (as well as it's use of all of Tokyopop's changes), its one of the only pieces of Initial D media that is universally agreed to suck completely. If you're interested in seeing the game in action, there was a great video made by Vectrex several years ago about the game that is quite good. You can watch that here.
Outside of all of the more obvious issues with the game, one thing has always irked me about the game, and that is this file:
Tumblr media
This file is used to represent Mako, when you are racing as, or against, her. I've always thought this image was odd, as it doesn't really look too much like her. For example, this is how Mako looked in Extra Stage (which this games image of Sayuki is from):
Tumblr media
Definitely different right? Even down to hair colour. I decided to take a look into it, try and possibly find who this is. The clues are as follows: This appears to be an image from Second Stage, and there are only about two women in Second Stage who this could be, and it definitely isn't Natsuki. I've always had a hunch that this was Kazumi, and I went through a couple of episodes of Second Stage trying to find her, and lo and behold, in Second Stage - Act 13, what did I find?
Tumblr media
The exact same frame used in the game, though obviously uncropped. So somewhere during the making of this game, someone managed to get an image of the wrong character (which is made worse by the fact that the number of notable female characters in the series is four) and it went entirely unnoticed all the way to release (and seemingly for the next 20 years after, as I'm unaware of anyone else reaching the same conclusion. Good thing no one played this game or someone might have realised lmao). I have to wonder if this image was supplied to the developers by Tokyopop or if they had to gather it themselves, its unclear who exactly is to blame.

'The Owl House' Light Novel Ceases Production after Writers Allegedly Leave Due to Low Pay
Production on the planned light novel adaptation of Disney's fantasy series The Owl House appears to have ceased after writers walked away from the project.
Tumblr media
The light novel, which was planned as an original story set in the world of Dana Terrace's fantasy cartoon The Owl House was initially announced last year. The book was to be published by Tokyopop, Disney Press, and Disney Manga.
Initially slated for a March 2022 release, the light novel was pushed back before being seemingly canceled. Barnes and Nobel have also stopped taking preorders for the book.
The book was canceled because the publisher was unwilling to pay fairly for the project, according to the series creator, Dana Terrace. On March 25, Terrace tweeted, "Basically asking ppl to write a whole damn book for pennies. Every writer chose to walk away, and I can't blame em."
Tumblr media
Terrace reaffirmed the crew's wish for a book or graphic novel based on the series, writing, "It's a dream for a lot of ppl on the crew. We also want to be paid fairly for that time and effort."
Tumblr media
YuriMother reached out to Tokyopop for comment, but they were unable to give clarification on the status of the light novel or speak much on the issue. A representative told us, "Our contract with Disney prevents us from responding about this matter at this point -- we are waiting for guidance from them."
Tumblr media
This incident is not the first time Tokyopop has been criticized for its treatment of artists and creators. In 2008, the company's "Rising Stars of Manga contest" was condemned for having creators sign away "moral rights" to their work and low rates, allegedly around 20$ per page.
The Owl House is a fantasy cartoon following Luz Noceda (Sarah-Nicole Robles), a human who stumbles through a portal to a strange other world full of demons and witches. There, she becomes the apprentice and effective daughter of the world's most wanted witch, Eda Clawthorn (Wendie Malick). The series has received praise for its characters, worldbuilding, and LGBTQ+ representation.
The series' second season is currently airing on Disney Channel. The Owl House is set to conclude with a shortened final season consisting of three specials following the announcement of its cancelation last year.

My first thing I ever got published was the graphic novel: Undertown (through Tokyopop) back in 2007 (you can still find it on ComiXology)! Every once in a while I draw the character Joey PP just to see how I’d draw him today

Did you know Cowboy Bebop is shojo?
Well, at least the 2 manga adaptations are!
In our latest episode, we discuss the two shojo manga versions of Cowboy Bebop: Cowboy Bebop by Hajime Yatate [Sunrise staff] and Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star by Cain Kuga
Ask an anime fan above the age of 30 what their favorite anime is, and chances are high they'll say Cowboy Bebop. The music, the animation, the mood — it's iconic. And then there are the two shojo manga iterations of Cowboy Bebop, which have largely been lost to the sands of time (and then, there's the Netflix live action version...). Shojo and Tell host Ashley and her husband, Asher, read both of these severely out of print manga adaptations, and discuss here. Topics of discussion include: Ed and gender, why the heck is Shooting Star the way it is, and why was it decided that this seinen anime needs not one, but two shojo manga adaptations?

Went a little rogue once I discovered that Tamayo Akiyama had works published in English. A former CLAMP member who left the group in I believe 1992, these works plus I think two others that didn’t get English releases were created by her.
I do feel like the artstyle of these really matches the RG Veda/Tokyo Babylon/Clamp School Detectives art specifically? Either way, I’m excited to check all of these out even though admittedly the reviews online were not super positive haha.
I only found about these as I randomly picked up an old Animerica magazine I had to feel nostalgic and saw a review for Mouryou Kiden and the art caught my eye as being very CLAMP-like lol.
