I liked the part with the atrocity.
I seriously cannot believe what I just saw, it was that batshit crazy.
A US submarine captain in WWII is on a mission to sink a Japanese aircraft carrier when he is told that it is using a transport ship containing 1,400 POWs, including his own wife and child, as human shields. His response? Fire torpedoes at it anyway while his crew begs him not to.
Now you might think that when he missed his target and sank the transport ship, confirmed that there were women and children in the water before leaving them to die, that would be the catalyst for some kind of mutiny, court-martial, or even just some drama aboard the sub. Nope. Not this movie.
Instead they very briefly show his second-in-command discussing his mental state with an admiral once they return home, and by discussing I mean ardently defending him and refusing a promotion that would separate him from his beloved, mass-murdering captain. They then head back out to hunt the same carrier again, eventually sinking it at the cost of their own sub. Roll credits.
I can't stress enough how insane this movie made me feel. It was like I was being pranked. Maybe this was an anti-war movie in disguise, because everything that happened in it was a senseless waste of human life that accomplished nothing but making the US navy look incompetent and evil. It certainly wasn't framed that way though, and I don't think I'm going to extend this movie the benefit of the doubt.
A technically mediocre movie, completely overshadowed by its conceptual absurdity. Truly terrible.

Begging for people to please hit the Drizzler torpedoes back at them it instakills them if you hit them with it (even when their armor is up) and prevents their ink storm from even launching Also I swear people don’t know how to lure salmonids to save their lives we’re in EVP please just lure them to the basket and have two people take out the ones at the shoreline

Alright so I've got four laying right now. My two booted bantam girls Lily and Rose, Elsie the isbar and Gwinny the orpington. I've noticed Plumette the black copper marans making trips into the coop and checking out nestboxes, so I'm gonna assume she is getting ready as well. I've definitely noticed Crumble mating with her a few times, so at least he's convinced she's getting ready.
That just leaves... this potato

Little Biscuit, who is showing absolutely no signs of getting ready to do anything except be More Potato.

so in an attempt to actually use positive thinking, anytime i fuck up and my brain reacts as if ive cause a minor apocalyptic event, i compare my fuck up to the 4 minute fuck up committed by the crew of the uss william d porter.
and only today, as i was having to explain what happened to my mom when i was explaining the whole comparison thing, did i realise that most people dont know about it and ive decided that needs to change because its objectively hilarious.
...which is a weird thing to say about an event that occured on a warship in 1943, specifically november 14th.
see the uss william d porter was a fletcher-class destroyer but you dont need to know what that means, just that she had guns that went bang bang and that she was escorting another ship, the uss iowa, to cairo.
while they were on their way there, they performed some gun trials like testing the anti-aircraft guns or the torpedos. and while they were running a torpedo drill, the crew of the porter managed to fire a live torpedo straight at the iowa which you know, in terms of a list of things to do while escorting a ship, shooting a torpedo at them is not on that list.
especially if the president of the united states is on board.
yeah so fdr was on board and the gun trials were actually his idea, and part of the trials was that they were conducted under radio silence.
and that means the crew of the porter couldnt just call the iowa to be like "move out the way, we accidentally shot a torpedo at you."
but they did have signal lamps and you know, the signalman on board was trained to signal this exact kind of message.
...and uh never mind, the signalman did manage to successfully tell the iowa that a torpedo was coming toward them but wasnt as successful when it came to the direction the torpedo was coming from.
not all hope is lost though because the signalman could still use the signal lamp to correct his previous mistake and-, never mind, he announced that the porter was reversing, which she wasnt.
yeah so at catastrophic mistake number 3, they broke radio silence to warn the iowa and she managed to turn out of the way just in time which meant no one got hurt. and even though the inquiry into the incident led to chief torpedoman (fantastic job title btw) lawton dawson being sentences to hard labour, fdr intervened and waved away his sentence, saying it was all an accident.
but yeah, so thats my new measure for "how much did i really fuck up?" and when i compared accidentally picking up a pencil case without a tag on it in wilko, turns out it was a very minor fuck-up. yes, the cashier had to ask another worker to grab a duplicate so they could scan the barcode, but i didnt nearly kill the president during wartime via accidental friendly fire

The more I dig into the Voyager rewatch, and the more I see Janeway is giving in more and more to the Valkyrie she's always inside. The more intriguing Janeway is. I already think she's great but digging deeper into Janeway is amazing.
I keep thinking of how Janeway holds on to the Starfleet regulations and it makes me think of that Doctor Who quote and how she fits the description to a tee:
"Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many."
I feel this is Janeway -- she has rules for a reason, she's not evil but she also knows she can go very, very far.
Janeway has been through a brutal border skirmish in the conflict with the Cardassians. She downplays it but, how Kate Mulgrew, it feels like there was a lot more there.
Tumblr media
She ranked up from Lieutenant, not because of being a Science Officer but because she's a decorated vet in a bloody siege, where they won.
As we've seen from Sige of AR-558 and the episode in Strange New Worlds ground combat is a whole different beast from ship-to-ship battle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Tom looks like a zombie in the last one btw)
Also, IMO, she's one of the more inventive tacticians in Starfleet-- the way she used the torpedoes in Year of Hell as a mine was amazing!

That's a great naval tactic shit. Hot girl navy.
But also, Janeway fits so much the Doctor Who, Good Man Goes to War rhyme:
Demons run when a good man goes to war. Night will fall and drown the sun, when a good man goes to war. Friendship dies and true love lies, night will fall and the dark will rise, when a good man goes to war.
It's also true of Janeway that when the three people that form the basis of Janeway's mental health died and/or became very sick, Admiral Endgame Janeway happened. And then she destroyed the Borg.
Janeway needs rules for a reason.
