#TW; racism

hi! what do you think it would be like, a relationship between the old man! terry and his daughter, who is a black, mixed, teenager girl... i always imagined that, as has already been said in your blog about his xenophobia, i would like to know more, especially how he would react, especially because being his daughter would not save his daughter of suffering racism, or any other type of violence.
---
Terry Silver himself is pretty racist, this is undeniable.
Hate to pretend he ain't.
But, Terry also has this thing where he's an undeniable hypocrite with immense double standards he's undoubtedly entirely aware of and even cocky about because he makes the rules and rules are what he makes them when he makes them; meaning that he's fully capable of being xenophobic to a member of one race, ethnicity, group, creed or what will you and then in the same vein being nonironically the most devoted person towards the exact same kind of person provided this person is someone aligned with him. Someone in his corner. Someone he cares for. Someone his. You're either with him or against him and that's that on that. He deals in absolutes.
It's not right. It's not fair.
But, whoever said Terry Silver's a well-balanced individual with good ethics?
For example, man's fully disrespectful towards Mr. Miyagi but maintains a fairly understanding and even respectful relationship with everyone related to the Korean Dojang he studied under back in the day. Doesn't like the Vietnamese because he waged war against them. Doesn't like Mr. Miyagi because Terry feels the old man and his twerp student gave John Kreese and Cobra Kai a hard time (a transgression worthy of immediate revenge), not withstanding the fact it's an old injury and prejudice going back to World War II --- America dropped a bomb on that part of the world and Terry's willing drop another, figuratively, for old times sake. Doesn't mind Sensei Joe at all, even though he very much minded another Okinawan decades ago --- but, unlike that one, this Okinawan is his friend. Emphasis on the his. Or at least, so Terry thought. Has a reverence towards Koreans in ways he doesn't towards the members of the same race, in the broader sense. So, what's up with that? They're all Asian, though. Shouldn't he despise them all equally? Difference is, he perceives some of them to be in his corner and some of them in the opposing one and when you're in an opposing corner to Terry Silver, I'm afraid all bets are off regardless of your roots. He will then use every weapon in his arsenal, even racial prejudices. And suddenly, out come the slurs.
In short, such would be his relationship with any Biracial child he'd have.
Or hey, a Biracial partner.
Everything his is the most hallowed, important valuable and prized subject of his loyalty imaginable and while he's not racially blind to the fact his own kid is mixed (he's fully aware) the man just cannot be impartial and he's king of all biases. He's not shortsighted and he doesn't have tunnel vision --- he just doesn't give a damn about offering olive branches towards people that he isn't involved with. That aren't in his camp.
Again, you're either with him or against him. No middle ground.
He'd be entirely capable of dishing out a world of pain if someone racially disrespected his kid, but man would be entirely willing to do the same thing he'd kill because of to someone else and he'd do both with a smile on his face, somehow managing to be the biggest advocate and ally to a singular individuals and also simultaneously the most bigoted person ever, so go figure that one out.

On May 19 Sgt. Michael Kunovich deemed him suspicious while outside the Super 8 motel parking lot. Aguilar Mendez was sitting down eating but started to walk away when the officer approached in his patrol vehicle. Kunovich began to question him, but Aguilar Mendez couldn't understand him or communicate well and repeated that he was sorry. That's when Kunovich decided to search him, and Aguilar Mendez resisted. Two other deputies arrived to assist in taking the 5-foot-4, 115-pound teen to the ground as Kunovich repeatedly stunned him with his taser, all seen on body-worn camera video. Aguilar Mendez can be heard screaming for his family and is seen trying to gain control of the taser as the officers note in the video. Toward the end of the 6-minute scuffle, the deputies saw that their handcuffed suspect had a small folding knife and disarmed him. Kunovich collapsed a short time later in medical distress and died at the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Aguilar Mendez, who came here from Guatemala, was staying with other farmworkers at the hotel. He is being detained without bail, which is the subject of another hearing as yet to be decided. (source)
I'm going to need you all to start spreading awareness about this case and sign the petition. I'm a 5'4 woman and I weigh more than him. He's only 18, indigenous and doesn't understand English nor Spanish really. I can't imagine how confused and scared he was. Tased 6 times and apologizing repeatedly and calling out for his family... he is not responsible for the police officer's death. The fact he's been held for 8 months without bail is disgusting.
Virgilio looks so small, sad and defeated in all of the images I've seen of him.

⋆˖⁺‧₊☽◯☾₊‧⁺˖⋆ He doesn’t know how much longer he can run before this man catches him. All he can do is keep running. He can’t stop. He has to get back to the cabin. He has to get back to Aura and Black Wind. He has to get back to -
A gunshot has him ducking down as he runs, hoping the bullet would miss him. A second has him nearly dropping to the ground to avoid it’s path and the hood over his head falls as he does. He jerks and keeps running. He’s not supposed to engage. He’s not supposed to acknowledge. Even as he hears the word
                                              “Misterican!”
Tear through the forest walls. No one else around here was supposed to know. No one else was supposed to know he was even alive but the jig is up and the man behind him won’t stop chasing him.  He can’t shake him no matter how fast he runs; no matter how quick he turns.  A third gunshot and it’s moving too fast. It’s all he can do to call the Maken to swing around behind him and block the bullet from going right through the back of his skull.  He needs to move faster but his legs hurt and he’s not used to running like this when it would be so much more efficient to simply fly.
He needs to get to Black Wind. He needs to focus and just get to Black Wind. He needs to focus on nothing else but that’s proving difficult when this man is hot on his trail. He can feel him getting closer. He can feel him gaining on him and he doesn’t know if he can keep this up. His breath his heavy. His back hurts but he just needs to move. Don’t think. Move... Pilvi there’s no time. Don’t think. If you think you die. So stop panicking and run faster.
It’s not enough. He’ll never get away and soon he feels himself getting wrenched backwards as a hand reaches out and he’s pulled back by the hood of the dark cloak covering his person. A yell leaves him, heavy puffs of mist pouring out of his lips as he shouts and fights to get himself free. It takes all his focus to call to the Maken to swing to his aid and force the man to release him. It’s in his hands only moments later while he braces himself to fight.
"I don't want to fight you."
His voice quakes as he raises his blade. Jade eyes peer forward to take in the sight of his assailant and deep red eyes framed by near black hair stare back at him. He is a tall man, nearly as tall as Black Wind - if not possibly the same height. His hair is long but nowhere near the length of his other and there is a frown growling on lips that are nearly hidden behind deep blue fabric.
"Die then, Serpent Child."
And the man is lunging at him with a curved blade of a dull blue and from the angle of the strike he's aiming directly for his chest. It's all the prince can do to raise the Maken in defense of himself and to stop that blade from piercing his extra delicate upper half.
"You know you're just so delicate."
A voice echoes from above and it's almost as if only the Misterican can hear because his attacker doesn't seem to notice at all. Instead the man continues to lunge at him forcing the Misterican to keep that blade up to keep blocking his advance.
"Listen to me." He sounds again in a panic. "Listen to me! I'm not your enemy. I don't want to fight you."
But his attacker says nothing and just continues to come at him like a rabid animal. It's as if he only has one goal in mind and that's to strike the Misterican down at any cost and a second blade is drawn into the mix causing the swordsman to twist his body in a strange way to avoid its bite but still it manages to scrape across his side.
The prince cries out and his agony echoes off the trees. He's not supposed to engage. He's not supposed to acknowledge. He shouldn't be doing this. He shouldn't be doing this; he should have ran when he had the chance. But what good would that have done when this man's reach was twice the length of his? How was he supposed to escape that?
There was no way he could have gotten away once he was caught and there's no way he can get away from him now. Should he scream? Should he scream for help? No one is supposed to know he's here and if he yells then everyone will know that this little Misterican Prince belongs to Black Wind and he can't get him in trouble like that.
At least this way. At least this way if this man kills him, no one will know who he was affiliated with and Black Wind won't get damned and shamed by his people. The man already had enough problems with being cursed.
So the prince does his best to continue to parry blows coming from two sources but again they slip past his defenses and their fangs dig deep into his flesh.
Tumblr media
"Stop!" He cries out as he releases his blade and allows it to float in front of him while his right hand raises to cover his left shoulder. "The Celestial Mother….Lady Tiamat never wanted this. She never wanted us to fight like this."
And finally this man as fast as a Rushing Stream speaks. "Silence Fume Lung! That wicked viper speaks not for my people, I have no reason to listen to you, boy."
And the man strikes out at him again, but the Maken moves with lightning speed to block the blow without the prince so much as ever laying a hand upon it.  There is a disgusted growl that leaves this man of tanned skin and a thin blue tattooed over his nose.
Black Wind?
His eyes blur to suddenly see blue eyes and red hair. No. No this man is not his other. This man is not -
He's doing everything he can to focus on his sword and not the pain because he can't take another blow. He can't take another hit when this man is too precise in his aim and too deadly to look away from. If he's not careful this wolf will snatch him by the throat in a single hit.
Before the prince realizes what his opponent is doing the taller man has flipped his blade around in his hand so the blunt end of the hilt is facing forward and he's striking again. Confusion makes the young swordsman and he hardly sees it coming when the blunt end of that hilt comes crashing into his center horn.
Nothing breaks but it feels like it does and he's dizzy at near instant, jerking to a halt for the moment and it's at this time that his opponent's foot comes forward to sweep his legs right out from under him taking the prince straight down to the ground. He's flat on his back when that man climbs on top of him and pins him in place.
Oh no. What is he supposed to do now?!
"I keep telling you they'll tear you apart but you never listen. Even when they tried long before I was keeping you safe and still you learned nothing… what am I going to do with you, My Precious Little Cloud?"
Where is this voice coming from and why won't it leave him alone? Who is it?
He can't focus on this right now when his attacker is coming in with one hand to take him by the throat. It's crushing. He can't breathe. The Maken has fallen to the ground discarded and out of reach as his own hands reach up to weakly tug at the hand on his throat.  He … can't… breathe…
Tumblr media
"Ple…ase." He heaves out the words as he tugs, hoping against hope to try to get himself free, but he can see the man's other hand readying the blade to strike him down and he finds himself wondering just where on his chest will he strike because that's what all Windarians we're taught right? To slay their enemies in the worst way possible.
Black Wind wasn't like that.
The arm moves, the blade is coming but it jerks and freezes mid swing. Soon, his assailant is just lingering there with wide red eyes before blood erupts past his lips and pours over his chin. He's falling. He's falling from the blade that has been buried in his stomach but the only two people here were this Windarian man and himself…
The man collapses to the ground and wait…wait he can remember now. This man.. this is Rushing Stream but he didn't die in the forest when he attacked him. He died in the match when Black Wind killed during the right of challenge masked as a way of settling the anger. The anger over housing a Misterican and aiding the enemy.
"You never could be trusted with a son."
The words echo above him as he looks past the corpse that suddenly fades away and above him stands a tall man of deep red hair and pure black.
"Mine." He growls out the single word with oceanic suns fixated on jade moons.
"My prey…My kill."
There’s no time to get up. There’s no time to run. He can only watch in horror as those same beloved irises of ocean bleed to blood crimson as the man growls again and bares his fangs at him.
“Mine.” He  growls for a second time, and he’s reaching for him. He’s reaching out a hand that is no longer Windarian but that of the Dragon Lord’s clawed hand itself. He’s frozen. He can’t move. His beloved Other’s form is twisting before his eyes as he watches the man morph into a mix of half dragon half man.
“Mine.”  He’s growling possessively as that clawed hand reaches as grips around the throat. It squeezes and he can feel the blood rushing to his ears as his head starts swimming.
“Mine. My kill.”
He’s not in control of himself. Neither one of them are. What’s he supposed to do? What’s he supposed to do when he’s pinned down like this?  He can’t reach the Maken and besides it’s - It’s Black Wind - he can’t just -
That black cloak is flooding back as it twists into a grand wind and a second clawed hand is reaching towards him - the Magun gone from sight - and this man turned beast is digging his claws deep into his chest to carve out his -
Tumblr media
Jade eyes are wide as shallow jagged breaths leave a gaping mouth. Hands are raising in a fright to pat against his chest and down to his stomach where he finds only bare skin and bandages.  His robe is gone and his under-armour is too.  His stomach is bandaged from the waist up.  He’s in one piece. He’s in one piece and it was just a dream.
What happened? What happened?
His back hurts as his left side screams like fire as he moves and he’s hissing out in pain once the sensation hits his brain. “Au. Au. Au. Au.”
That’s right. Those villagers. They tried to kill him…. And Black Wind… he was hurt too. Where - where is he? The last he remembers he was in the forest with him and then he fired Orthrus…
Where was Black -
Worried jade settles on the sight of long red hair and black fabric. He’s upright and facing towards the entrance of the cave they seem to be occupying. All he can do is groan, as he sets there, still slightly dazed from sleeping for so long? He assumes it was long anyway knowing how his regeneration system currently functions in its damage state. He can only assume he’s been down for the better part of the day and he’s lifting his right hand to rub it against his face as the prince lets out a groan again.
Tumblr media
“Black Wind?”  His voice sounds softly to break the silence between them. “Are you alright?”

courting antisemitism
so i recently decided to take a look at the latest stonetoss comics (probably because i love suffering). and while i was expecting some content on the israel palestine conflict, what i did not expect was how... standard it seemed. well, most of it at least, but i'll get to that in a second.
for context, if you don't know what stonetoss is, it's a (poorly drawn) webcomic known for having radical alt-right views - meaning it's incredibly racist, homophobic, transphobic, islamophobic, antisemitic. all that fun stuff.
so while i was expecting to see bad stuff, one of the first things i saw on the topic of israel was this:
Tumblr media
terrible art aside, this comic is making a point that i usually see in left wing circles: that israel is pinkwashing genocide.
curious if there was more like this, i kept looking, and the comic right before that one was this:
Tumblr media
again, this makes points that i usually see in left wing circles. that american healthcare is crazy expensive, that canada tells poor people to commit suicide, and that israel is bombing hospitals.
why does stonetoss, this well known alt-right nutjob, now seem to be bringing up left-wing talking points?
curious, i kept going deeper:
Tumblr media
well this is... odd. clearly, stonetoss is trying to say that israel is on another level of bad, even worse than russia, iran, and north korea. i can possibly see someone on the left making the argument that the russian invasion of ukraine isn't as bad as what israel is doing in gaza, or that at least north korea isn't invading any other countries, but... iran??? the country that has a police force designed to enforce religious law, and gets away with murdering women who do not properly cover their hair? the country that props up paramilitary groups in countries all over the middle east, including lebanon, yemen, and yes, palestine?? that's completely ridiculous
but, given how much more israel is in the news nowadays than any of these other countries, i could see why someone would buy this
and now, we're starting to get to the crux of what stonetoss is trying to do. when someone sees this, they might be inclined to agree with it. they might begin to think that israel is the worst country on the planet
and that might not seem so bad at first. but the more you hate israel, especially irrationally, the more you feel allowed to dehumanize those who support it. the more you might be willing to agree with this comic, which came out two days prior to the one above
Tumblr media
this comic says that jews, as a whole have no desire to exist with other people. it is blatantly antisemitic
i'm sure you could imagine some young leftist who sees the comics above this one and thinks, "this guy makes some good points". and then, when they get to this one, they might realize that this is antisemitism
or, they may not.
and that would start them down the road to becoming an antisemite.
this is what stonetoss and other alt-right nutjobs are hoping to achieve. to take left wing fury at israel, and direct it at jews.
we saw it with those neo-nazis at the palestine rally, and we're seeing it again here.
and if you've found yourself agreeing with what stonetoss has said so far, i would like you to see the last comic stonetoss put out before october 7th:
Tumblr media
this horrifically racist comic is in reference to an environmental activist who was murdered by a black man in early october. this blatantly racist garbage is the kind of stuff stonetoss usually puts out.
but as soon as october 7th happened? these were his next two comics:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
stonetoss completely changed the comic's tone as soon as the current crisis started. why?
to get as many people as possible to get on board with hating jews.
and i know many of you might be thinking that "well, everyone knows that stonetoss is racist garbage. nobody is going to fall for this"
except, as we saw with the neo-nazis at the rally for palestine, it's not always that obvious who the antisemites are and who is just rallying for peace. they are often a lot better at disguising it than stonetoss is.
AND EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF THAT
EVERYONE, no matter HOW much experience you have, can fall victim to propoganda. EVERYONE needs to be aware of what people around them are saying, and able to pick out hateful rhetoric, because even the stuff that is just kind of toeing the line of what's hateful is still putting your foot in the door
be cautious, everyone. and stomp out hate where you see it.

My only American pride: Getting pissed off whenever white Europeans want to condescend to me/Americans in general how “[Insert racism/racist violence that happened in America here] would NEVER happen [Insert place in Europe they’re from]” CUNT-
1) I do not fucking care, people are dying Kim
2) As justified as your disdain of the US is, it’s shoved your head up your ass. White supremacy and racism are global issues. No country or continent or region is exempt. Think otherwise and maybe you’re not as enlightened as you think you are.
3) Having a specific nationality doesn’t mean you lack racial bias and the ability to contribute to racism.
4) Seriously fuck you

It frightens and discourages me how pervasive "tribal" stereotypes and imagery are in the fantasy and adventure genres.
It's all over the place in classic literature. Crack open a Jules Verne novel and you're likely to find caricatures of brown people and cultures, even when the characters are sympathetic to the plight of the colonized peoples - incidentally, this is the biggest reason I can't recommend 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to everyone, despite Captain Nemo being one of my favorite fictional characters of all time.
You can't escape it in modern cinema, either. You'll see white heroes venturing bravely into jungles and tombs to steal from natives who don't know how to use their resources "properly." You'll see them strung up in traps, riddled with sleeping darts, forced to flee and fight their way out. Hell, Pirates of the Caribbean, a remarkably inclusive franchise in many other ways, had an extended sequence of the white heroes escaping from a cannibal civilization in the second film.
And when fantasy RPGs want a humanoid enemy, the "bloodthirsty natives" are the first stock trope they jump to. World of Warcraft is one of the most egregious examples, with the trolls - blatant racist caricatures with faux-voodoo beliefs, cannibalistic diets, Jamaican accents, and a history of being killed in droves by (white) elves and humans - being raided and slaughtered in nearly every expansion.
It doesn't matter how vibrant and distinctive the real-world indigenous, Polynesian, Caribbean, and African cultures are. It doesn't matter how much potential these real civilizations offer for complex and sympathetic characterization. Anything that doesn't make sense to the white western mind is shoved under the same "savage" umbrella. They're different. They're strange. They're scary. They have to be escaped, subjugated, eliminated, ogled at from the safety of a museum.
Modern writers, directors, and developers don't even seem to realize how horrifying it is to present the indigenous inhabitants of a place as "obstacles" for non-native protagonists to overcome. "It's not racist," they say, "because these people aren't really people, you see." And if you dare to point out anything that hurts or offends you as a descendant of the bastardized culture, you're accused of being the real racist: "These aren't humans! They're monsters! Are you saying that these real societies are just like those disgusting monsters?"
No, they're not monsters. But you chose to design them as monsters, just as invaders have done for hundreds of years. Why would you do that? Why can you recognize any other caricature as evil and cruel, but not this?
This is how deep colonialism runs.

I know people are angry about predstrogen's ban right now- as they should be. But I really wish more people were talking about Nex Benedict's murder.
They were my age. Not even out of school. And they were murdered. Not "passed away" or "left us" murdered.
And I am so, so angry that this still happens. People will say our world is more accepting and that we don't need to fight anymore, when clearly we do! And I don't want to stop fighting until the world is a safe place for trans kids and trans elders.
So don't forget them. Their name was Nex Benedict.
Edit- important things from the notes:
Nex was indigenous. This is an intersectional hate crime.
Nex used he/him with friends and they/them with family, so I think he used he/they with a preference for he/him.
His murder has been called a suicide. It is very clearly not a suicide.
His name was Nex Benedict

Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion
@angelsweeps  ASKED: 🔥 wss ships bc i’m curious
I don’t think Riff x Anita should have gotten as much hate as it did. Especially since Bernardo x Riff is a ship that exists without the same amount of both Anon and direct hate. I personally don’t ship either of them, but I can respect other people’s ships and i don’t mind going along for the ride. The fanficiton Fight or Flight on AO3 was Riffnita and I really enjoyed it. Still not my go to ship though.
West Side Story is a story about love overcoming hate and starting an ongoing conversation about the nature of hate. The problem is if you gate keep Tony x Maria but reject any other noncanon ship because of racial issues, then you shouldn’t ship Tony x Maria.
Tony and Maria are a very safe ship. Sure, we have a clash of cultures and by the context of the times Maria is a person of color, but that’s only because  America rejected the white/black conflict that was going on in Latinx  and spanish communities. Racism isn’t exclusive to America. white privilege exists down there too.
To top all of that off, Maria has almost always been played by a non-latinx white woman. So to say “ i love west side story because its so daring in its exploration in love overcoming hate and its open discussion of racists and racisim in America” but send hate and death threats to other online users who say they ship other characters who are of color, or want to put them in an interracial relationship because one part might be a racist and racists are “nonredeemable characters”... doesn’t that gate keeping then make you a racist, because the canon ship is essentially a white ship?
I think i need someone to explain it to me, because the most common argument i’ve seen is that having an afro-latinx person be in a ship with a white person ( which is to say ethnic non-white by the story’s time frame and social status compared to how the police treat them within the narrative) would hurt afro-latinx people because their sole purpose is to fix the racist. Isn’t that whats going on with Tony and Maria? because Tony is a racist, too.  He canonically started the jets, in both versions he is a vicious fighter( tho his himbo-ness doesn’t help convey that) and in the new version, we know he is in jail for gang warfare with people of color ( I still have beef with them using the egyptian kings as a plot point but that’s another story). So  if the biggest complaint is that in this story shipping an interracial ship ( which would be the current story) shouldn’t happen. but Tony and Maria is okay. So does Maria not fix him? Is she not a person of color?  I’m so confused as to why one is okay, but the other is not. Is it because we are told all these things about tony but don’t actually see them? i mean in the new version we see a tony that simply doesn’t care about anybody and the girl he sees dancing in the gym sure a hell looks like the jets around her.
I’ve noticed in my research kickback against suggestions from both the puerto Rican community as well as avid american broadway fans against casting an afro-latinx person as maria for much of the same reasons. it just doesn’t make any sense to me.
I mean I know WSS is part of the racial discussion triad which includes Show Boat and South Pacific, but we face much of the same problems. In Show Boat Julie, a biracial character, is left by Steve by the end of the show, her white husband. In South Pacific,  Joseph Cable, a white GI, dies in action leaving Liat, the Tonkinese(northern  Vietnamese) girl alone in the world. Sure Nellie , the white nurse, decides to marry Emilie, the rich french man, but the show never has her touch his biracial children, and she never has more than a polite conversation with them, they get passed off to the nanny.
We can’t have progressive musicals  be progressive without being willing to address the fact that people can grow and can change. Maybe not overnight, but gatekeeping people from shipping something like Riff and Anita based on the canon white ship, despite it being considered interracial just seems ludicrous to me. Ship what you want! Push characters out of their comfort zone and into personal growth, that’s how we better mankind!

Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group
Tumblr media
It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.
Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.
In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.
Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:
Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)
Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)
How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)
Gardening
Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)
Country/Rural Living:
Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)
"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)
Sewing/Mending:
Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)
Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)
Sustainability/Land Stewardship
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)
Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)
Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"
Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.
"The Crunchy-to-Alt-Right Pipeline" by Kathleen Belew [magazine article] (Good, short introduction to this issue and its history.)
Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)
These are just the resources I've personally found helpful, so if anyone else has any they want to add, please, please do!

I was listening to Behind The Police (podcast about the history of American policing) recently and at one point the hosts were discussing the tendency of white supremacist/fascist violence to have this element of absurdity to it - ie, people dressing up in white KKK robes and calling themselves wizards while attacking black people - and the point of this is to deny their victims the decency of “straightforward” experiences of violence. To later recount that a group of wizards attacked you makes you to sound absurd to whoever you’re talking to, and it becomes more difficult to make sense of. it’s all “just a joke bro.” your discomfort and fear and confusion and pain is the punchline. and modern right wing discourse is so laughably deranged as to be a joke in itself (perhaps best epitomised by the now-memetic phrase “the fluoride in the water is making the frickin’ frogs gay”), but this is of course deliberate. the rhetoric of “satanic pedophiles are sacrificing children in the basement of a pizza restaurant” or whatever is employed because it distracts from the real message they’re trying to deliver (ie, antisemitism). it isn’t just a denial of reality but a very particular form of cruelty that makes it more difficult for the victims of right wing violence to be taken seriously, to make sense of what’s happened to them.
and it feels like the same thing is happening now with transphobia - rhetoric that insists on “protecting children” from trans people while the US is actively loosening their child labour laws (x) (x). this isn’t a case of mere “hypocrisy,” this is rhetorically deliberate. the rank absurdity and insincerity of their words is meant to deny you the ability to think clearly, to distract you, to make you sound like a crazy person, to enrage you, all the while they get to carry on as if they aren’t saying or doing any of these things

another black trans man was murdered on Thursday, February 29, 2024. his name Righteous Torrence "Chevy" Hill. we currently do not know any details other than that he was murdered.
his friend posted two days ago on instagram:
our beautiful black trans brother, 35 year old Righteous Torrence “Chevy” Hill, was murdered in Atlanta, GA this weekend. he went by his nickname ‘Chevy’. he was originally from Macon, GA. he owned Evollusion, which is a black/queer owned LGBTQ+ salon in Atlanta that provided and dedicated full service to specializing in hair, nails, barbering and makeup. growing up as young black queer boys/kids , the barbershop experience can sometimes be a tricky space to occupy, this was something that Chevy understood and wanted to cultivate a space of safety where you can also get the affirming look and style you want, and he did exactly that. Chevy was a beloved son, brother, partner, and father. one of his last posts that had a photo of himself said : “if you truly know me, you know i am a humble, modest, private man, that i love my community, i have the love of God in me and will give the shirt off my back to any soul in need, also i never post pictures of myself, i never give myself credit, that stops today, i am my legacy!” (a close friend of Chevy asked if i could share more then one photo of Chevy, since he never posted photos of himself and in recent years he got the confidence to want to share more photos and now he won’t get the chance to) Chevy, hey king, hey brother, hey angel, thank you for everything, i lové you, we lové you, i’m so sorry. there are a lot of photographers in heaven who will be able to photograph you as the glorious black trans angel that you are. there will be a homegoing service/memorial for our brother

Hi, would you write something about Haytham Kenway? Maybe that he comes back from an assignment / mission - is a little frustrated and takes his "frustration" out on his wife. You know what I mean - Haytham smut
Mhm mhm listen, it’s not your fault cause I forgot to put it on my don’ts list in my rules. But I won’t write for Haythem Kenway. My reasoning being, aside from the fact I despise him.
To clarify; By all means find him hot, find him an entertaining character, but he’s not someone to emulate or root for. And he’s not someone I’m comfortable writing.
Thats why I will not take this request, I’m not accusing anyone who likes him of being racist. I’m just tired of repeated behavior in the AC community within and outside of his fanbase. Of those who deny he’s racist, who denies his actions fundamentally align with white supremacy. That his entire character isn’t built upon the reality of powerful white men who reap the benefits of slavery and genocide of there time. But conveniently deny culpability for what they associate themselves with. Just cause he banged a Native American woman doesn’t mean his actions don’t have real world alignment with the genocide and slavery which took place in America. And still takes place today. Again, he’s a great character for it and an important one to discuss it.
And to even somewhat invite racist fans who defend him into my blog. I won’t risk nor will I tolerate such in this post, I won’t debate this in reblogs. If you bitch and have a problem I will simply block you. Have a nice day, I will be more conscious of my rules in the future
