@underworldqueen13 submitted: Found this dude at my grandfather's while hunting cicads shells. He was absolutely huge. Dad says he might be a giant horse fly. Any idea? Found in Baltimore md
This man is a lady! And yes, she’s a horse fly, though not any sort of giant. They are just naturally that large. I’d need to see the markings on the abdomen to tell you which species of horse fly, but mayb Tabanus calens :)

Been planning for my next field season recently and got nostalgic about all the super cool inverts I got to hold! Not sure if I ever posted all of these but here’s some of my favorites.
1) Giant Horsefly - Tabanus calens
2) Gladiator Katydid - Orchelimum gladiator
3) Billbug - Sphenophorus sp.
4) Six-spotted Fishing Spider - Dolomedes triton
5) Nelumbo masked bee - Hylaeus nelumbonis
6) Polyphemus Moth - Antheraea polyphemus
7) Meadowhawk dragonfly - Sympetrum sp.
(please do not repost)

@pelipperdelivery submitted: A very fuzzy, bright white caterpillar (that I think may be a hickory tussock moth caterpillar?), a cool, tiny, leaf-looking moth, and a HUGE fly(?) that was just uh…hanging out? On the ground? In the middle of the sidewalk? (Maybe it was dead?) All three were found in the surrounding areas of [removed] (remove location if posted, please.) Any idea what they are? I can give more specific location information if needed.
Yes, the first is a hickory tussock moth! The leaf-looking moth is a bent-lined dart, which is a noctuid. And finally the BIG BEAUTIFUL fly is a female horse fly, I'm thinking probably Tabanus calens. It doesn't look dead yet to me! May have just been resting, warming up if it was cold, or possibly near death.

@oneezha submitted: back with another good bean. a grumpy horsefly (im not sure if she’s a specific type since this is like, THE standard look for the midwest; i DO know she’s a lady because her eyes are separated! and only ladies bite!) sitting on the pavement patiently waiting for it to stop raining so hard.
All bugs are a specific type so yes she is! Maybe Tabanus calens? A specific location would make it easier to ID. But yes definitely a bitey female! We still love and respect her though :)

@giganeura submitted: A whole gaggle of friends! First’s a Spiny-Backed Orbweaver, I have no idea who the second and third friend is other than some species of Horse Fly, fourth’s some kind of Robber Fly, fifth’s a beauty of a Mantis, and sixth is some form of Beetle!
All found in Clinton, SC
Great collection of pals! I would say the second pal looks like a male Tabanus calens, which is definitely a horse fly, and the robber fly is a female red-footed cannibal fly. The mantis is a Carolina mantis and the beetle is a common green June beetle :)
