Yatsuko Tan'ami and Ken Uehara in Wife (Mikio Naruse, 1953)
Cast: Mieko Takamine, Ken Uehara, Yatsuko Tan'ami, Rentaro Mikuni, Michiyo Aratama, Sanae Takasugi, Chieko Nakakita, Hajime Izu, Yoshiko Tsubouchi. Screenplay: Toshiro Ide, based on a novel by Fumiko Hayashi. Cinematography: Masao Tamai. Production design: Satoru Chuko. Music: Ichiro Saito.
I was well into Mikio Naruse's Wife when I had a sudden feeling of déjà vu: I felt like I had seen this film before. It struck me when Toichi Nakagawa (Ken Uehara) goes to a cafe with Fusako Sawara (Yatsuko Tan'ami), a typist who works in his office, and she identifies the music playing in the background as a violin concerto by Édouard Lalo. I thought I had seen the cafe setting before: It's distinctively divided into two levels, with some ornamental ironwork separating the upper from the lower level where Nakagawa and Sawara are sitting. Later in the film, when Tadashi Tanimura (Rentaro Mikuni), the painter and art student who rents a room from the Nakagawas, appears, and still later when Nakagawa's wife, Mihoko (Mieko Takamine), rents another room to a young woman who's the mistress of an older man, I knew I'd seen Wife before. At my age, any memory lapse like this can be disturbing, but I also thought it told me something about the kind of film Wife is. For the main story of the film, about the stagnant marriage of Toichi and Mihoko Nakagawa, is so low-key that it's hard to latch onto anything specific about it. We've seen troubled marriages and illicit affairs before, but the Nakagawas hold their emotions in such tight check that they never explode into memorable scenes. The parts of Wife that the memory holds onto are the unique ones -- a classical melody, a distinctive set (as contrasted with the Nakagawas' typically boxlike home), or colorful characters. Even the title, Wife, has a generic quality to it -- like some of Yasujiro Ozu's titles, it doesn't give the mind much to hold onto. This is not meant to be a knock on Naruse's film, however. The pain experienced by Mihoko when she learns of her husband's affair, and that felt by Toichi and Yatsuko when they're forced to part, is very real and quite delicately observed. And there's something particularly devastating about the lack of resolution at the film's end, when, having achieved a kind of stalemate, the Nakagawas return to routine. He goes off to work and she stays home, both condemned to trying to work things out. In a way, I'm glad I had forgotten that I'd seen Wife before: It gave me a chance to rediscover a work whose subtlety and finesse outweigh its lack of flashy memory hooks.

Good Advice is Hard to Find (Next Gen)
I really can't remember a time without my so called cousins. We're not related at all, and I even have two bio cousins that I see way less, but these people are essentially family at this point. Which made this whole situation much more awkward.
"What do you mean you like Tadashi?" Toshiro squinted at me, putting his old Gameboy down. "Aren't y'all friends? Did you hate him or something?"
"What?" I responded, genuinely concerned that my third year brother is this dense. "No, like, I like him like you like Reo."
He scrunched up his nose, digging his fingers into his wild hair as his ear jacks twisted together. "But we're dating, not friends. Did you mean Ryoko?"
"No, stupid!" I exploded, burying my face in my hands. "I have a crush on Tadashi!"
"Gross." Toshiro muttered, sticking out his tongue at me. "He's like my brother. And you're my brother. That's kinda like theoretical incest."
"Why did I even come to you?" I muttered, making a quick exit. Obviously my older brother was too dense to help me out, so I had to find another option. Luckily, my little pseudo-family wasn't so small.
-
My next attempt was Uraraka Machiko, as she is in a relationship with Tadashi's older sister, Ryoko. She had to be able to help me out.
"Machi?" I asked, knocking on the door to her dorm. The door wasn't locked, but I would have no idea if she was changing or anything. "Are you there?"
"S'open." Her voice called out, obviously layered with sleep. Makes sense, she's never been an early riser. I quickly ducked into her room, only to let out a squeak.
Machi was indeed still in bed, just not barely asleep as I had thought. She was curled around Ryoko, who was typing away on her laptop. Damnit.
"What do you need, Hibiki?" Machi asked, meeting my eyes over her girlfriend's shoulder. They were both fully dressed, so at least the only awkward one was me. Heaven forbid I interrupt something. That would be truly horrendous.
"Nevermind!" I squeaked out, nervously messing with my hair as I backed out the door. "I must've forgotten what I needed! Silly me, oh look at the time! Gotta go bye!"
Two down, and I was no closer to solving my problem. Maybe I was asking the wrong people. They were too close to Ryoko, so maybe I should try someone that isn't best friends or girlfriends with Tadashi's older sister.
-
The Midoriya twins were the next most available option, as they were just a floor up. Another benefit to the UA dorm system. A quick knock on Hatsuko's door, and I was in.
Hirano Junko, her girlfriend, was there, but it looked like the two girls had been playing Smash before I entered, and neither were related to Tadashi, so this was already much more successful than my last attempt. Sachiko was also there, which was an added bonus.
"What's up, Little Jirou?" Hatsuko called, starting up a new match.
"I actually need some advice." I admitted, taking a seat in the abandoned desk chair. "Relationship advice."
"My strong point!" Hatsuko laughed, nudging Junko with her foot. "Better not ask this one though, she's awful at it!"
Junko rolled her eyes, ending their match with one final move. "My, what strong fantasies you've been having."
The two laughed away, so I turned my attention to Sachiko. She was sitting on her sister's bed, English notes spread across the bed sheets. "Can you help me out, Sachi?"
"Sure thing." She nodded, taking off her glasses and rubbing her eyes tiredly. How long had she been studying? "What seems to be your problem?"
"Well, I think I like Tadashi, but he's my best friend, and we've known each other since we were babies."
"I didn't hear a problem in there." Junko adds, looking over from her bean bag. "Sounds like you like your boy there, Jirou."
"That's the problem." I sulked, hanging my head in shame. "He's my best friend, and there's no way for this to end with everything staying the same between us."
"Isn't that good?" Hatsuko asked, coming over to sit on her desk. "You like him, and he probably does too, so you guys just like date."
"It's not that simple." I muttered, playing with the beaded bracelet on my wrist, specifically the black and red bead labeled with a white T. "If he doesn't like me and I tell him, our friendship becomes awkward. If it doesn't work out, friendship awkward. There's no option except amnesia that ends with us both staying best friends."
"But you don't want to be friends." Sachiko points out. "You want Tadashi to me more than just your best friend. You want something romantic, not platonic, and you're worried you'll lose the relationship that made you realize your appreciation for him."
"That's exactly it!"
"Just hero up and tell him, little man." Junko huffed, finally joining our ring by sliding up next to Hatsuko on the desk. "Tadashi's a reasonable dude, it's not like he'll hate you."
"It went so well for us!" Hatsuko adds on, laying an exaggerated kiss on her girlfriend's cheek. "Either give up, and move on, or just go for it."
"Thanks guys." I smiled, getting up from my seat. "This was a big help."
I couldn't help but think that I still needed convincing on the matter. Maybe I was being irrational, but when am I not? Maybe a fifth opinion is the best course of action in this case.
-
"You're making a big mistake, JH." Hoshiko hums, floating back into her hammock/nest lazily. "We're far from the ones who should be answering your questions."
"I already talked to Toshi, Machi, Hatsuko, Junko, and Sachiko. It's not like you two were my first choice." I roll my eyes, sitting beside Fumiko on the carpet. "Besides, I need insider knowledge."
"Kazuya can give you that." She snarked back. "Or even Hiroki. Neither of them would spill."
"You say that as if we would, darlin." Fumiko laughs, scribbling more background details onto her character sheet for our D&D campaign. "We can help you out, Hibiki, don't worry."
I let out a sigh of relief, letting my posture go slack. "Thanks gals. I just need a closer, outside look on it."
"No worries, outside looks are what I do best." Hoshiko drawls, rocking her bed space. "The way I see it, you should just get it over with and tell him. The boy is very emotionally dense, tell him as it is. Don't wait."
I ponder this for a moment. "You're making sense, I just don't know if I can go through with it."
"Where's the confidence we see in hero training?" Fumiko jokes, nudging my shoulder with her tail. "Put on that Alchemist swagger, boyo. It'll help."
"Is that what you did?"
The two girls laugh, as if the idea that Fumiko embodying her demonic hero personality to ask out Hoshiko is the funniest thing they've ever heard.
"No way!" Hoshiko snickered, smirking at her girlfriend. "I spent weeks during D&D last year leading up to the drunken wedding scene, and it made her snap after that session."
Huh. I guess that makes sense, all things considered. "Well, thanks. I'll let you know how it goes."
All this advice was finally sinking in. Maybe the best course of action really was to Alchemist up and fess up to Tadashi. My dumb gay pining was only going to get worse, after all.
-
It's years later, lounging with my new husband on our couch that I realize how dense I'd been. Was I so insecure that I needed seven people to help me make a decision? Well, either way, I was glad I actually built up the courage, otherwise I doubt I'd be where I am now.

Helen Hamada
Can’t sleep so I made a headcanon character profile of my take on Hiro and Tadashi’s mother, Helen Hamada. She’s beautiful ain’t she?
While I like the source material’s information on Hiro’s parents, Disney’s rendition is markedly different with little canon so these are my headcanons. Only canon shot of her is from a photograph of the parents in the Japanese version of the film in the background... So I’ll give my take on Helen and their father, Toshiro (the father will get his own post too later)
My headcanons:
First off, she is Aunt Cass’ older sister by only one year. Their parents named them after characters of the Iliad, with Cass after the Trojan priestess and Helen after Helen of Troy. Plus it’s pretty appropriate that she would name her second son, Hiro, so they could have the same initials. Helen Hamada, Hiro Hamada. H.H.
While just a little older, Helen is more petite and slightly shorter than Cass. But they obviously look quite similar. The two sisters would go on to create and run The Lucky Cat Cafe together with their own quirky recipes and styled drinks. The sisters were very close and the same necklace that Aunt Cass wears is a memento from her late sister.
In order to run The Lucky Cat Cafe, it requires waking up early for early baking. Unlike her sister, Helen is not a morning person and its always a struggle for Cass and Toshiro to get her going. When she wakes up, she has a mean bed head not unlike Hiro. She even has the tendency to run her hand through her hair like her little boy, either if she is tired or in disbelief.
Although she was close and loving towards Tadashi, she was very fond of Hiro and he was momma’s little boy. It’s my headcanon that Hiro takes a lot after Helen in looks more so than their father, Toshiro. It’s why I like to think that Hiro will probably remain relatively short and petite like his mother. And when she was pregnant with Hiro, her cravings always led to gummy snacks.
On a sadder note, while Hiro believes that he doesn’t have any memory of his parents with him being young, in the case of Helen, his memories blend with her and Aunt Cass due to them looking similar and being very tender with him as a child. So in a sense, with Aunt Cass, he was always able to feel the tender love that his mother gave him in her short time with him.
Personality-wise, she is sweet and tender, playful and sarcastic. As the older sister, she can be a bit more serious but otherwise is very quirky like Cass. Helen has a tendency to be more stern and keep her husband, Toshiro, humble as the man is a genius who can get insufferably prideful (like Hiro) as she was worried her children would act like him. But she was undoubtedly very loving and protective of her family.
Artist’s Note: It was a fun and difficult challenge to design Helen, but obvious inspiration and referencing came from Aunt Cass. I truly hope she can make it into canon, but if she ever did, this is how I imagine she would appear in the series. I will continue to make my art and fan fictions to highlight the sheer potential in storytelling BH6 has and that the series deserves to continue for all the stories that have been left untouched.

The Option To Surrender
“Kobo is dying.” An older ronin, Toshiro, says softly, startling Ryuzo out of his study. He’d been pouring over the map of supply lines Jin had given him for hours, and his eyes burn and water when he looks up at the other man.
“What?” He asks, frowning deeply.
“Kobo. He’s dying.” Toshiro repeats. “His fever is worse, and he keeps looking up at the sky and mumbling to ghosts.”
“I thought he was getting better.” Ryuzo says, frowning deeper still. “Will he make it to a healer?”
“I suspect he’ll be gone in less than an hour, leader.” The other ronin replies. “And when he goes, if we’ve no plans to turn in the Ghost, then I will go too.”
“Toshiro.” Ryuzo sighs, but the ronin just huffs and crosses his arms.
“We should have already left. Perhaps if we had, my son would not be mere breaths from death.” He retorts. “I have been a Straw Hat for a very long time, Ryuzo. I fought beside Tadashi for Yarikawa, and I followed him to the Straw Hat ronin when the town fell to the jito’s forces. I watched him rise through the ranks, I bowed to him when he became our leader, and I accepted you as his successor when he took you as his apprentice. And when he died, I upheld his wishes and bowed to you when you took his place. And you have been a worthy leader, but this is too much. Never have I seen such suffering, Ryuzo.”
“What am I supposed to do?” Ryuzo snarls, on his feet and stalking toward the older man before he can catch himself. Toshiro stands his ground, lifting his chin and squaring his shoulders. “I’m starving too, you know. I’ve given everything. I’ve sold everything but the clothes and weapons I am wearing to buy food and medicine, and I’ve eaten nothing but grass for days. The last boar we tried to hunt nearly killed Katsuo because none of us have the strength to fully draw our bows. We’ve sold the horses we could, and fucking eaten the rest, and no one will help us because they don’t have any food either.”
“The Khan will help us.” Toshiro says, meeting Ryuzo’s gaze unwaveringly. “All he needs is the Ghost’s head.”
“Even if I wanted to kill Jin, I couldn’t.” Ryuzo growls, lifting his sword hand and watching it shake. “He’s always been a better swordsman than me. I wouldn’t stand a chance.”
“He trusts you.” Toshiro says, shrugging when Ryuzo looks back up at him. “If you can’t outfight him, outthink him instead.”
“I can’t do that.” Ryuzo breathes, appalled. “If I have to face him— and that is if— then I will do so honorably.”
“I was once samurai, Ryuzo.” Toshiro sighs, shaking his head and looking away. “Honor only gets you killed. Sometimes it’s better to retreat. And sometimes it’s better to surrender.”
In the end, Kobo makes it through the night, then draws his last breath as the sun rises. He lets it out with a rattling hiss, his body convulsing once as he fights it, and Ryuzo watches his eyes fix and grow dim. The Straw Hats stop their quiet singing, and Toshiro lets out a sob and reaches to pull his only son into his arms.
They’ll ride for Castle Kaneda once Kobo is buried. And even though it might kill him, even though it might make him wish he were dead, Ryuzo will accept the bounty that the Khan has placed upon the Ghost. He doesn’t have a choice. Sometimes it’s better to surrender.

If you've been here a while, you know I just write, I cannot art, so sadly I can't provide actual photos of the kiddos. A new master list will come out, and new updated versions of the info sheets will be released during this weird time. As always, the ask box remains open, and if you want to know something or just want someone to be released earlier, just ask! Worst that could happen is my box gets wiped by this site! You can even message me directly if you're curious!
