Joe Shishido in A Colt Is My Passport (Takashi Nomura, 1967) Cast: Joe Shishido, Jerry Fujio, Chitose Kobayashi, Ryotaro Suji, Kanjuro Arashi, Shoki Fukae, Eimei Esumi, Jun Hongo, Akio Miyabe, Toyoko Takechi, Takamaru Sasaki, Asao Uchida, Zeko Nakamura, Kojiro Kusanagi Barge Captain: Zenji Yamada. Screenplay: Hideichi Nagahara, Nobuo Yamada, based on a novel by Shenji Fujiwara. Cinematography: Shigeyoshi Mine. Production design: Toshiyuki Matsui. Film editing: Akira Suzuki. Music: Harumi Ibe. I didn't see any Colts in A Colt Is My Passport, but there are several rifles, pistols, and shotguns, some dynamite, and the protagonist carries a Beretta, so I suspect the title is a bit of poetic license designed to make the Japanese gangster into the equivalent of the gunfighter of the American Wild West. Harumi Ibe's music score, with its guitar, harmonica, and whistler evoking Ennio Morricone's scores for Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns, seems designed for the same effect. But why court comparisons? The Japanese gangster movie is its own well-defined genre, and Joe Shishido is its superstar. In A Colt Is My Passport he's Shuji, a hit man hired to off a crooked businessman, which he does with cool efficiency. Unfortunately, the guys who hired him immediately turn against Shuji, so he's soon on the run, along with his sidekick, Shun, played by the Anglo-Japanese actor and singer Jerry Fujio. (Fujio even gets to croon a ballad at one point in the movie, slowing down the otherwise non-stop action.) The movie is filled with James Bond-like gadgets and car chases: At one point, Shuji and Sun find themselves kidnapped and thrown into the back seat of a car that they have had rigged with an extra braking system, apparently just in case they find themselves in such a predicament. Engaging the brake causes the car to skid, throwing the bad guys into the windshield and knocking them out. And so it goes until Shun is captured and beaten to a pulp, whereupon Shuji bargains with the bad guys, giving himself up to them so Shun and the pretty motel waitress Mina (Chitose Kobayashi), who has helped them, can escape. Apparently the bad guys trust Shuji enough that he has time to work on a way of defeating them: He rigs up some booby traps for the showdown they have arranged on a landfill, and the movie ends with Shuji staggering away from the carnage. It's all great fun in that peculiarly heartless and mindless way that such thrillers have.

okay so! what can you tell me about break away?
Sorry for the late reply! I just got back from vacation and wasn’t on here much haha
What I can tell you about Break Away is that it’s about this rich teen girl who’s “the golden child”. Basically her parents hardly treat her as a daughter (if at all) and more of a trophy to show off to friends. They expect the best from her and she does her best but always ends up second place if anything. She tries to get leads in ballet productions but gets like second lead or just ensemble. She’s part of the student council and Vice President of her class, never president.
Maiko doesn’t realize how sheltered her life is until her classmate, my other OC, Yoko Nomura takes her to meet Mitsuya. Maiko’s tutu has a tear in it and Yoko knows Mitsuya from her friends Baji and Chifuyu and she knows Mitsuya is the best at what he does with making clothes so he’d be the best choice.
Yoko will make appearances since she’s friends with the gang, but it’s mostly about Maiko and her developing relationship with Mitsuya and how thanks to him and the gang she realizes what she’s missed out on in her childhood thanks to her parents. The gang start showing her movies, food, and other things normal teenagers experience that she’s been kept from and she slowly realizes how her parents treat her.
Maiko also eventually realizes that her dad got to be where he is with his company by some unsavory means making her see an even darker side of him.
I’m honestly really excited about this story and I hope I don’t lose the steam to write this. I have so many ideas and I think this will become a top 5 favorite of my fanfics.

Not to be that person, but I wish Yoshitomo Nara made black female characters w/ his art. I’m sure he probably didn’t see color (I’d hope not) but sometimes I really really wish he did. And I’m not finna play around in AI and disrespect a legend. So how about this, when the time is right and I’m 100% good at 3D meshing and whatnot, I’ll make my own version of a black girl in his art style and pay homage. I did it with Hajime Soyarama, Takashi Murakami, and Nomura Harukawa, I can do it with Nara too… Even though the Takashi one was AI. Before all hell broke loose about Midjourney tho.

A Colt Is My Passport [拳銃(コルト)は俺のパスポート] (1967)
Tumblr media
I love a good mission prep sequence. Gun-for-hire Shuji Kamimura is caught back on his heels for the majority of this film, a hitman whose boss turned against him through the machinations of inter-gang negotiations. Accompanied by his sidekick Shun, he’s got a target on his back and ever fewer options for an escape. At every turn he is forced to be resourceful and cunning, but it’s tough to get ahead when the deck is stacked in the favor of the opponent. As it follows our heroes and the troubled inn attendant they encounter, the movie slathers on noir-drenched style. The opening credits, all harmonica and twangy guitar, practically beg for comparison to a Spaghetti Western, and it is indeed in that camp. If A Fistful of Dollars was a shameless ripoff-homage of Yojimbo, director Takashi Nomura here returns the favor in terms of genre-borrowing. We have our man standing alone against insurmountable odds, dust swirling about him on the desolate landfill selected for the final shootout. He’s armed with guns aplenty, but also possesses an improvised bomb he’s prepared for revenge on the mob bosses who have come to observe in their bulletproof car. It can weather a shotgun or rifle blast, but good old-fashioned TNT is another thing entirely. Yet for all of his focus, Kamimura perhaps isn’t quite the efficient killing machine he might be in other potential iterations. While lining up his shot to take out the mob boss at the beginning, he is momentarily distracted by a bird. Later on, preparing to lay his trap at the landfill, a fly seems to inspire a brief moment of curiosity, enough so that the enemy can get the first shot and catch him off guard. It’s those damn adorable chubby cheeks; we can’t take him too seriously!
The largely discarded B-plot regarding the trials and tribulations of Mina offers a glimpse into working class doldrums in 1960s Japan. Constantly berated by her boss, who decries criminals but is siphoning gas from her trucker customers’ vehicles on the side, Mina can never catch a break. Her upbringing on a barge was misery from which she could never escape, and now her life is under threat by gangsters. Hopefully the white knight Kamimura can help spirit her away from this life of—oh, wait… oh, I guess she’s saddled with the sidekick unconscious on a passenger ship now all by herself again. Oh… okay…
THE RULES

Someone says 'rat' or 'Nagisakan'.
Spaghetti Western music starts to play.
