Toasts and red days?
Another mini gift for @nique10me This is an idea that she gave me for our story, and I can say that it really made me laugh so much. And we were at the mall at that time 😂
Enjoy!!
The incessant sound of an alarm clock and the feather-like touch of a finger on the souls of Ciara's foot were quickly making a rotten start of her morning.
She grumbled angrily and pushed away the bed cover from her face. Standing at the foot of her bed is a brown haired man, an annoying grin on his face. Ciara's brows drew together and, without even looking, she slammed her hand on the off button of her digital alarm clock.
"Good! You're awake!" Tatara Totsuka even had the gall to chuckle lightly at the messy bed hair and grumpy face of his girlfriend. Said girlfriend is not amused.
Before Ciara can even retaliate, Tatara placed a mug of hot chocolate at the bedside table and, with a tiny wave, quickly made his escape.
Ciara grunted with annoyance, but her cheeks were noticeably colored a darker red than a while ago.
-----~~-----
Breakfast between the four occupants of Shizume City's newest condominium was a rather joyous affair. Well, that's the case for the two males.
Nagare Hisui laughed alongside Tatara Totsuka as the latter tells a story about one of his more eccentric neighbors during his childhood. The green haired male imagines the scenario and cannot help but laugh more uproariously than before, the corners of his eyes brimming with tears.
Completely oblivious to the two men, sharp eyes dark with steadily growing irritation watched them both. Ciara Inoue and Karen Celestra both have hardly touched their meals, appetites lost from the abdominal pain due to that 'time of the month' and the incessant loud talk of their significant others.
Ciara's good mood after drinking the hot chocolate slowly evaporated the moment she and Karen entered the noisy dining room. And for the past ten minutes, she and her best friend tried to subtly remind their two companions to shut the hell up.
It was clearly not working. At all.
Karen turned towards her best friend and, like a psychic message only they can interpret, simultaneously pushed away from the table and disappeared to the main kitchen area. Their faces dark with sadistic glee.
-----~~-----
"Oww!"
"Heyy! Stop it"
Nagare and Tatara both yell at the two murderous females as they try to dodge the pieces of flying toast.
Karen was the first one who reappeared, one of the old toasters clutched in her arms. Green electricity came from her fingers and before Tatara or Nagare even had the chance to ask her what the hell she was doing, Karen aimed the toaster at them and fired the two freshly toasted bread at the two men.
When Ciara appeared though, all hell broke loose. She was reluctant to use the new toaster so she brought a basket full of bread, a red aura surrounded her body and focused on her hands. Ciara grabbed two loaves of bread and aimed the hot projectiles at Tatara, the food semi-burnt and extremely painful to touch with bare hands.
An hour later, Nagare and Tatara collapsed heavily on the sofa. They both sported slightly reddish skin and greasy shirts on areas where the bread hit them. The apartment was a complete mess and pieces of toasted bread littered almost every surface.
"Now then, we can finally eat in peace." Karen told the two exhausted men.
"Do take our more peaceful hints for silence to avoid another battle zone, boys." Ciara added, a smile finally on her face.
With that note, the women turned away from Nagare and Tatara as they both prepared to eat their breakfast.

June tournament preparation
Hey guys! Normally I just write about the Tournament games, but this preparation process was pretty cool so I thought I might share some of it with you.
For list choosing and other gameplay stuff, please check out my other post (in this blog, or the other link off facebook!)
I usually procastinate a lot and this tournament was no different. I didn’t even have the whole army assembled a week before the event. I played a couple of games with some very inventive proxies.
Tumblr media
Here are my Ranger conversions - they are composed of a combination from Eternal Guard/Wildwood Ranger parts, a Drukhari knife on their back where the quiver would have gone, Glade Guard and Wych/Helion/Kabalite/Venom crew helmets. I was lucky to pick up all the wood elf parts I needed on cheap, and then the legs are kabalite ones you can buy from bits stores like Hoard O Bits for barely anything! In this way I had parts for over 20 rangers. I like running them with just splinter rifles, since once they’re painted there’s no mistaking them for kabalites, and this way I can run them as Kabalites or allied Rangers if needed!
Tumblr media
Here they are in my new lightbox!
Quick guide:
1. Clip off the non-cloak parts of the cloak, so the back half of the torso where it would join to the front, then use a hobby drill/sand tool to quickly bore out the neck area of the little mount.
2. Glue to a Wych/Pilot torso - kabalite torsos can work but I prefer the less armored look of the Wyches. Then put on some kabalite legs, a head. Maybe use some greenstuff to feed into the neck. I didn’t use the back half of the Kabalite legs, instead covering it with either green stuff or some grenades/pouches from Harlequin kits.
3. Finish with a trimmed of spikes splinter rifle or rifle and knife.
Tumblr media
Here are my storm Guardian conversions, very simple, scourge/wych legs, then wych blades. I figured wych blades already grant one extra attack so as a counts as chainsword they fit well. For pistols I had some random Storm Guardian metal parts that I used for some, or used a grenade, second knife, or splinter pistol arm with a shuriken pistol glued on.
Tumblr media
Here they are based. I use a combination of slate, milliput slabs broken up to give a fine detail slate, and milliput to sculpt raised areas, finally a mixture of sand and rocks for the dirt texture. I’m super proud of the guy on the right, looks very menacing!
Tumblr media
Basing in this way also adds weight and fully secures the feet into what is essentially rock, so I don’t have to worry as much about these models falling off the base, saves me a bit of time pinning. In general if a model has a tab for slotta base, I cut it down and then sink it into a scenic base, and if it doesn’t I either pin it or glue a small piece of sprue just to give it something to properly bond to.
Tumblr media
Here is my OOP autarch obtained from http://blackmarketminiatures.su , incredibly quality, and the staff were really great. It didn’t come with a reaper launcher but I had a spare, so just cut off the support for a shuriken catapult arm (the tube and stuff) and kept the top trigger mount, then glued it on the bottom. It is of course magnetised too!
So at this point I have my assembled army. I always love to have all my models out to just admire them and reflect on my work. My girlfriend makes a bit of fun of me for it. I sometimes feel a bit like Smeagol from lord of the rings. Admiring my precious! This will be a nice comparison shot to the finished army!
Tumblr media
2 Days Before
I have to start painting up! So I started with the rangers, doing a quick drybrush over the black cloak with mechanicus gray, then washed it with whichever color I coded to the squad.
Tumblr media
So for the green, Coellia Greenshade, purple, Druchii Violet, and for blue I used Drakenhoff Nightshade. Then I redrybrush with Dawnstone, celestra, then a final drybrush, very targetted, with Ulthaan grey. Then I used a glaze to recolor it. For Blue Guilliman Blue, Green, Waywatcher Green, for purple I don’t have a purple glaze so I just used Druchii Violet. The picture above is the final picture.
Then I worked on the new Wine Red armored recruits. I knew I wanted very distinct guardian squads, as they would often be mixing up in formation to make sure I always had screen for my characters. So I have made them Ynnari colored.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I was not too good at painting this time, just couldn’t focus on the little details well. I couldn’t really do as much detail as I would have liked but it was at least tabletop ready and looked nice from a distance. I followed the White Dwarf recommended Ynnari style. Started with a airbrush on the armor of Vallejo Scarlet Red which I then washed with Nuln oil, then went over quickly with Khorne red to brighten it back up a bit. I was having problems with the airbrush so couldn’t get it to apply smoothly with the Air Khorne Red. Anyway, then I highlighted with Mephiston Red, then a finer highlight of Evil Sun’s Scarlet, then a sparing highlight of Fire Dragon Bright. Finally, I added a touch of Yriel yellow on the very extreme corners for a bit of extra color.
Tumblr media
Finally I did my blue sashes and what have you to tie them with my existing force a bit more. They were done with Kantor Blue > Vallejo Magic Blue > Vallejo Electric Blue. Gold detail, then Mechanicus grey on the weapons. Leadbelcher on weapons. Mournfang brown on pouches. For skin tone, I basecoat with Doombull brown. It’s a very nice earthy tone. Then layer with cadian fleshtone, flayed one flesh, wash the pouches and faces with agrax earthshade. I wish I could show pictures of this but some of it’s not very impressive to look at up close and it’s a bit embarassing for me.
Anyway at this point I have to do a couple characters, my Farseer, two Autarchs, the rest of the reapers, the Hemlock. I’m pretty tired anyway so I mostly spend the time with my lovely girlfriend playing some video games and watching netflix together. It’s important to take these kinds of breaks when you’re rushing like this. Sure you might not get everything done as much as you like before a tournament, but it won’t do you any good to be continuously worn down from not resting properly the days before.
Last day!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really would have liked to do better work on the Farseer but it worked out alright. I actually still batch paint characters, often along with the rest of an army. I used my standard Blue recipe for the cloak to match my other characters. Starting off with Kantor Blue, layer with Magic Blue and highlight up to Electric Blue. This one turned out a little bit flatter, but that’s a bit because the cloak itself lacks the heavy folds of something like Eldrad’s cloak.
Tumblr media
Here’s a better example of how it looks with more folds to work with. I like this one a lot more.
I painted the purple sashes on all my characters at the same time. It ties them together quite nicely and provides a bit more color. Basecoat Naggaroth Night, Highlight up to Xerseus, then Genestealer. Often I go back and forth deepening recesses as well when I’m painting like this. It’s pretty quick to do. My style is to be a bit neat but mostly just plan out which areas will be easiest to clean up.
The navy robes are basically that technique of starting with the Fang, then highlighting with Russ Grey, shading with Dark Reaper just painted into recesses, just play with it till it gets nice.
Bone white is Rakarth (two thin coats), Pallid. Brown is Rhinox > Mournfang. Gems are just Black basecoat > Mephiston Layer > Smaller Evil Suns Layer > Wild Rider Red layer even smaller then a tiny bit of Fire Dragon Bright. I wanted to do the Farseers middle gem like the Eye of the Time Stone (as it looks like the same!) but I honestly forgot. Maybe I’ll do it now :D
White is Mechanicus>Celestra>Ulthanaan. Prep all gems and details by painting them gold. Gold is great on a time budget because it naturally has shading and highlights already. If you’re going to use metallic gold to paint beyond tabletop, avoid washing the entire gold section with wash, as it dulls it down.
At this point i’ve done all my details above on my various characters. Gold, white. I was yet to decide on colors for the autarchs besides the red for the Alaitoc autarch to match the new guardians and what have you. I still had a fair bit to do and all the bases. Starting to panic a bit, I took a break.
Next step is the blue blades I like to do. You start with a blueish basecoat (can either be Sotek or Caledor Sky) then layer on with multiple thin layers to establish Temple Guard blue, then mix and layer up to Baharroth Blue then Baharroth blue + White. I wish I had more time to push these, but I rarely paint except when I’m prepping for a tournament, so these would match the ones I did before.
Running out of time, I quickly did my reapers, just doing Russ Grey, a wash, the weapons and plumes are Nagaroth > Xerseus > Genestealer; White is Mech/Celestra/Ulthanan. Wish I could have done these better but a bit of a wash and they fit in with the slightly better painted ones from before.
For the rangers, they really needed some detail so I decided to just give them a quick dryrbrush on armor of Dark Reaper, into a lighter shade of “ I can’t remember “. Then the silver details and they were tabletop ready.
I was still at a loss for my Autarch at this point and resolved to just send him in as mostly black (as he had his blade, robes, gems and gold done). After drybrushing his helmet plumes, my girlfriend suggested doing his eyes to add a bit more detail so he’d look better. I was way too tired to do such a fine detail task so I asked her to do it for me. She took a while and it turned out she’d gone way beyond my request of “ just paint them green “ and done some really nice highlights!
Tumblr media
They look awesome! Really excited to do more work on this guy now I’m not under the gun. Anyway. I put all this down and finished up some detail on other units. Finally I had to work on the Hemlock. Unfortunately my airbrush was not cooperating so I couldn’t do my usual punchy blue that I like. I didn’t mind. Just did a thick highlight of Eshin Grey then a smaller of Mechanicus. Painted a couple small things gold then added a turqoise glow to the engine vents and the D-scythes.
Tumblr media
Not very proud of this one but I was very pressed for time. That’s why you don’t get to see it up close. Basically it’s just a drybrush starting with Sotek Green > Temple Guard Blue > Baharroth Blue > 50% Baharroth and White, with a smaller and smaller drybrush area each time.
Finally, I needed to do all my helmets. Ended up not feeling steady enough so mostly left them white. However when I was airbrush priming all the white I realized I could do some work on my currently mostly black Autarch and just do a zenithal highlight to catch his wings with a quick burst of the airbrush (I prime “ white “ with vallejo light ghost grey). It worked out pretty well! Nice and quick too and I felt comfortable with the work on him!
Tumblr media
Anyway everything is mostly done at this point (”Good enough”) so I was working on my display board. It didn’t really work out as I had left it too late, so the first layer of PVA bonding the texture to the surface hadn’t dried. We tried everything to speed up the process but it just was not working. It was time to work on all the bases. I had to basecoat a lot of them to get the dirt and rock basecoated. I didn’t have time to do any in progress pictures, but you can see it in the pictures of the storm guardians above, reposted below for ease:
Tumblr media
So basically I have one of two ways I do a base. If I’d had to airbrush, I needed to use the base colors to really cover those areas, then redefine them with a wash of Agrax and/or Nuln oil. If they’re black, I can just drybrush immediately. For dirt, the base is Baneblade Brown. Then I heavy drybrush the rock Mech grey. Then, highlight the dirt with Ushabti Bone, not being too afraid to get it on the rock because it helps you tie it together. Then, on the rock, Dawnstone over all of it with a less heavy drybrush but you still mainly want the color to be dawnstone. Then, another drybrush mostly on edges with Celestra gray, then onto a fine drybrush of Ulthaan.
Once that’s all done, my amazing girlfriend rebasecoated the edges of the bases with chaos black, while I placed my tufts on the bases and put snow on them. This was getting very late at night. My tufts are “ gamer grass “ of the beige 6mm, green 6mm variety, and on bigger bases I use 12mm tufts. Then I applied generous but sparing Vahallan Blizzard. It’s quite useful to cover any areas you messed up in the basing process, like missed texture, or areas where the red from airbrush hit somewhere. Other than that I like to create little stories of where grass grows. For a bit of realism with snow remember it mostly would stay on the edges and then the snow melts onto the area below a ridge. But mostly I do it how I think looks good. Little bits of grass growing from crevasses is my favorite, it reminds me of that line from Jurassic Park where he says “ Life finds a way “.
Tumblr media
A cool trick is to really drag out the texture spreader to create thin snow. I’m not sure how to describe the technique but it ends up looking quite nice I think!
Anyway I ended up finishing all of it around 2 AM! Quite bad to have to play the next day getting up at 8 latest! I couldn’t resist a group shot before I packed it all away. Here it is!
Tumblr media
And here is the before picture!
Tumblr media
I was very happy with how the Dark Reapers turned out with the basing, as they have three points of white for the eye to look at. I’m not sure how to say that but it just really pleases me to look at so I hope it looks good for others too. Anyway I hope this has been a bit entertaining and maybe helps you prepare for your next event. Obviously take more time! You need to be rested and take care of yourself! My final tip is to just start with biggest areas you can. Finally you can really cheat and push some details, like on my guardians, the big highlights on the armor with that final push of yellow, really can draw the eyes and make them look a lot better than they actually are. They’re very messy, and the helmets aren’t done, but I still got a lot of comments for the army looking nice.
Till next time! :)

Ancient Tree – The Marrow Wood
Summary: An ancient evil has returned to the land of the living, and is completely lost. One of its minions goes to biggest city to help find someone to help rebuild, and help put a map together of a world they had left to grow.
Previous Entry: Link
Index: Link
They can’t go on location for certain reasons but I tried to make it interesting : q
Avy hasn’t stopped giving me rats.
“I tried spit-roasting them.” He gave me the charred stick with the rat was stabbed through, having been skinned and cooked medium-well in the fireplace.
It was a rainy evening and dinner can’t be cooked in the kitchen cause that room was well underwater.
Not that the topmost room in the north spire was a lot better. At least, that was the standard I expected.
This was supposed to be a lookout but the person who manned the tower had a fireplace built in secret. And a bought some nice chairs, a fancy rug that had withstood the extreme test of time – wonder how much funding these took—and chains with shackles connected to the wall for some reason?
I’ve never liked Mio. I’m glad we didn’t let him wake up.
“Eat your fill, Sorchrys,” Rodain said, huddled in the corner with the kids sitting around him with bowls of warm porridge. Thanks to Rodain, the roofs were watertight and the kids had learned a lot about construction. “You have fifty-million mouths to feed.”
“We all want to die.” I said, trying not to be glum. I mean it, truly.
Those kids around Rodain were morbid, laughing at me while Avy turned the rat sack over to find it empty.
“Why are they so tall and strong?” One of the kids patted Rodain’s huge knee and pointed at me, her bird egg’s blue hair contrasting with his deep brown locks. “When we only had rats to eat, Avent didn’t grow until we started stealing.”
“When birds only have bread, they starve.” Rodain said, confusing the children further. He didn’t elaborate further and couldn’t exactly demonstrate like he could with hammers and heavy lifting so I stepped in.
“I don’t eat just rats!” Right, I mean to say I stepped in a bit later.
“Yes, I’ve seen him swallowing frogs too.” Rodain mentioned offhandedly and I nearly cried.
“Ewwwww!” The kids chimed together, wanting to rub it in more than actually thinking it was gross.
Which it was! It really is and I’m going to get ripped apart if they catch me with a deer.
There are still deer around, right?
“Anyways! Rodain means that you can’t survive on ah meat alone. You need vegetables and fruit,” I chewed on my lip for a bit. “But I’m not exactly like you. Vegetables don’t do anything for me. Er, same with trees!” I quickly changed the focus. “They don’t eat meat, sort of. They eat sunlight with their leaves and eat meat when it turns into dirt with their roots.”
“Is that why no one grows as big as the tree behind the bell tower?” A different child raised their hand.
“It’s not right behind the bell tower,”Avy explained when Rodain and I turned to him. “The bell tower’s built in an exact spot that keeps everyone in the city from seeing the giant tree down south. No one’s been there but you can see it when you leave the city,” He went to the window facing the southern direction, leaning out to the storm. “You can see it from here too.”
Though it had to have been a nonstop three day trip by wheel away, I could see the long curve of what Avy believed was a thick trunk arching in the distance.
“That’s not a tree.”
Avy didn’t argue with me, tilting his head to get a better look at what sort of gross thing I was.
The spire shook, hit by a funny cat that didn’t know it wasn’t supposed to fly. All the kids scrambled around Avy, thinking it was a monster instead of a fluffy little scamp.
I hurried to the window and reached down into the dark. Two paws grabbed my wrist and I tugged the kitty cat—
Mach has just invaded my privacy and is telling me that if I keep writing that he’s a cat, he’s going to tell the kids that I can’t stop myself from eating baby birds.
None of the kids or Avy had met Mach yet, even though he wasn’t on a trip like Celestra was. Mostly cause his last face rotted off a way long time ago so he needed a new one.
The skin stuck to his bones well, taking on a youthful form that made him look younger than Avy but still big enough to keep him separate from the kids.
He took off his hood and shook the rain from his strawberry blond hair, glancing at the kids before giving Rodain and Avy a short nod.
“I heard you talking about the tree.” Mach rolled his shoulders, going to warm himself by the fire when he didn’t need to. “Was just there.”
“But it’s a rib,” I was surprised the rib had lasted so long without crumbling like the rest of the Boss’s father’s bones. That thing’s been around since before most of us were born. “Hold that thought, where were you? I get why you want to be adorable for the kids—“Mach scowl was saggy, what with his new face still adjusting. “—but how come me and Rodain haven’t seen you at all?”
“Because I work and Rodain works,” Mach snapped back, throwing his cloak over the shackles. Oh, I should have thought of that. Rodain was thinking the same thing, covering a few of the kids’ eyes far too late. “Even the children work but you just follow them around while I have to sit in the dark, writing new identities for us.”
“Then how did you know I was chaperoning Avy and the kids?”
Mach tossed an ovular packet to me, aiming for my poor face.
“I took a break and went for a walk. Same with today.”
Glancing between Mach and the silhouette of the tree outside the window, Avy said “That’s a long walk.”
“About an hour,” Mach jabbed a thumb at the packet in my hand. “Found that when I visited the tree.”
The woody packet, damp from the rain, was actually a very large seed. Kind of like an apple’s if the apple was the size of a horse.
“The rib…” I picked at the bottom of the seed and Rodain plucked it out of my hands, chewing on the end. “…it’s not a rib anymore?”
“Still a rib but the tip fell off and the marrow had rotted into the soil until it was hollow,” Mach leaned against the wall and slid down until he was sitting. “A tree seed must have drifted in and fallen all the way to the bottom.”
“That rib goes on for miles. There’s going to be barely any water, maybe a few minutes of sunlight at the right angle.” I narrowed my eyes at the seed, its thick hull resisting Rodain’s crushers.
“When I was there, there were leaves bursting out of the top and big branches had broken through the bone. The people in the town nearby told me that it grew flowers for the first time this Spring,” Mach said, raising his hands to the fireplace’s flames. He usually curled up and napped there but too many people were watching. “The fruits are starting to grow now. Some already fell. Whatever kind of seed grew in the marrow, it’s going to be nothing like anything else in Kanaria.”
As the children gathered around the seed in awe, I approached Mach when he beckoned for me.
Glancing back at Rodain holding the seed and at how Avy was trying not to spy on us, I wondered how fast that see would grow with all the sunlight and water in the world.
It’s a just a seed but come next year…
“You and Rodain don’t tell him—“Mach whispered when I knelt next to him, referring to the Boss. “—that I went there. I just visited his father’s bones to make sure the bastard was still dead.”

Quick and dirty Farsight-style Fire Warriors. When you have to paint 60, they need to be quick. I reckon these guys are coming in at about 15 mins a model.
Stage 1: Airbrush
Vallejo Black Primer, then Khorne Red focussed on the red bits, obviously.
Stage 2:
Wash with nuln oil all over, mopping up as much as possible from the flat plate surfaces.
Stage 3:
Black all the cloth, then use 50/50 khorne/wazdakka red mix to lighten all the red areas, avoiding recesses.
Stage 4:
The Fang then a smaller highlight of Russ Grey on the hooves. I don’t bother washing these. Can dot in some Fenresian Grey to make them popopopopop a wee bit more. But remember every minute you spend is multiplied by 60...
Stage 5:
Celestra Grey then White Scar all over the shoulder crest, then carefully black over the raised parts. Time consuming, but there has to be something to break the model up: this and the hooves are worth it.
Stage 6: Squirt some Ice Blue out the airbrush into his face. Far from perfect, but from a distance this looks reasonably cool, and takes 5 secs.
Stage 7: (missing here) Balthasar Gold on the gun bolt, then a wee shining gold highlight
Stage 8: My favourite base - Stirland Mud, drybrush Zamesi Desert, then a bit of Dawstone, then some faint dabs of Longbeard Grey. Grass spots, and a black rim.
Done!

Nature Untouched – Worm River
Summary: An ancient evil has returned to the land of the living, and is completely lost. One of its minions goes to biggest city to help find someone to help rebuild, and help put a map together of a world they had left to grow.

I’m actually really afraid of worms. Like, you put a picture of one on the table, i’m leaving the building. Same is snakes :”P
This was the worst day of my life.
The morning came and I noticed that Avent had waded into the water to make sure none of the pebbles would get into his canteen. He was about to go on a short jaunt to hunt for breakfast and didn’t say hello when I decided to go join him.
“You aren’t wearing armour?” He asked, which showed how crazy attentive he was when he had never seen my armaments.
Right away, Avy noticed that I was surprised and pointed out the deep creases in my clothes.
“The guards back in the city have the same kind of lines when they’re off duty. Why don’t you wear yours?”
For one, it would scare everyone. Two, if there was anyone with a grudge around, they wouldn’t recognise me with it on. But most importantly—
“I look pretty tacky in it.” I admitted.
Snorting, Avy turned and headed Southwest where the land dropped off a cliff instead of sloped. If it did slope, it would be far more natural to see rivers or streams that ran from our base.
Instead, we ended up in a vast forest where the canopy was so thick, only speckles of sunlight dotted what little grass there was. Wide rivers wove around this forest like an infestation, making it seem more like the trees and brush were standing on islands.
If it weren’t for how fast the current was, leaving the riverbed bare of rocks or debris, I would have thought we were at a lake. Strangely though, we were in a forest with rivers that originated from nowhere, located on a cliff without a waterfall.
It resembled a snake nest more than a twisting river.
“What’s a snake?” Avy asked me.
“A very good snack.” I winked at him and Avy kept walking.
Despite how there was more river than there was land, Avy lead the way easily. Huge lily-pads acted as bridges for us, their blood red flowers sparkled just below the deceptively calm surface between the wide leaves.
“There aren’t any fish,” I mentioned, stepping on the dewed grass with my companion as he drained the rest of his canteen. He had a homemade short-handled net in his hand and if it wasn’t for fish, it might have been for bugs. “Actually, I don’t think I’ve seen any animals around.”
“They’re here.” He tossed a stray stick into a bush and the holo rats hiding inside scattered in all directions.
My heart jumped into my throat and my stomach tensed at the skittering balls of shiny grey fur.
Avy coughed, waking me up. When I thought about it more, Avy had woken way before the sun had risen, lit a fire, and got ready to go on a trip that was too far too much time be convenient. He could have easily found something in the fields or fish in the crater’s lake.
“Is there something special in these woods?” I asked just as he finished rummaging through the foliage. He had found a mossy log, flipped it over, and discovered a couple of slugs hiding on the moist underside.
They glittered, resembling slimy tubes of sequins than actual slugs. Before I could ask why all the animals were so sparkly (what were there no birds around to eat them?), Avy took all of them and stuffed them in his mouth.
I almost vomited on the spot, getting teary eyed from how loud disgusting the sloshy wet noises from him sucking on them were.
Somehow satisfied, he spat them on the ground and swallowed the slime. I never dry-heaved so violently.
“What? I’m having a drink,” He frowned at me, looking at me like I was crazy. “Right, you’re all weird. Uh, these slugs are poisonous but only if you bite them. Otherwise, you can hydrate yourself on the slime they secrete to make that poison more potent.”
“There’s water right there!” I yelled, about to go in for a drink from the nearest river myself. Avent grabbed my shoulder and yanked me back, shaking his head.
Confused, I squinted at the river and noticed that even if it was clear and clean, rippling at the top, you couldn’t technically call it one.
Multiple times during our golden age, I was almost killed because of my bad eyesight. It was so bad that Celestra and Mach had to shove me on a slab to get a doctor to make it better.
My eyes are 20/20 now and I was almost killed again.
The spine wasn’t transparent but it was very close, only able to be seen at certain angles. It stretched the entire length of the river, or rather, the giant translucent worm that made the forest bed its home.
“In the city, you can’t reach these woods on foot or wheel by nightfall. The night eats everything it swallows but a few times, some hunters made it through and brought back barrels of these glass worms. They were slimy like the slugs but weren’t poisonous and thick as fingers. The markets began selling the worms like noodles.”
“Ew.” I gagged again.
“Didn’t know if that was the case,” Avy shrugged. “They sold high and weren’t worth the trouble of stealing. My siblings were always curious though.” He sighed, letting slip a little disappointment on the topic.
“The next time the hunters went to get more, they never came back,” He stared at the ‘river,’ its spine undulating as it slithered. “I always thought the night got them.”
Unless the hunters Avy was talking about had carried enough back to last a city’s population for years, the river of worms turning into just one giant monster so fast was…I don’t know enough about wildlife to say if that’s strange or not.
But, Avy’s sigh was a lot heavier than it was yesterday.
“You know,” I gently prodded Avy’s side with my elbow to make lighten his breathing. “The worm’s so big, it’s not going to miss a bit of skin.”
He shoved me hard enough to make me start hopping.
“What if it attacks us, idiot?”
Considering that the worm could wrap around the shore of the crater’s lake three times, I didn’t hold it against Avy for thinking I was dumb.
“Haha,” I rolled up my sleeve. “I can take it.”
My companion bit his lip, staring at me the same way he stared at the river.
Turning to the Worm River, I took in a deep breath and stuck out the tip of my tongue. Biting down to focus, I tasted the air, and struck faster than Avy had time to see, tore a chunk off the worm.
Its jelly flesh mad a wet slap on the grass beside him, shaking the ground.
The worm paid no mind.
“The bigger the beast, the less important the skin,” I said, watching the wound I left disappear around the bed of the river. “You don’t notice a pinch.”
Avy knelt by the meat, knife already out to cut the catch into more manageable slices.
“Want help with that?” I offered but Avy shook his head, fully focused on his work like a little kid opening a gift.
“You’re not afraid of the worm, right? Grab some of those flowers in the lilypads. I saw them being auctioned for loads back in the city too.”
“Will do.” I said, jumping to work.
Really, flower picking took what, five minutes to get a nice bouquet? With Avy safe on his own, I could jump around a lot faster plucking the flowers off their stems.
But I stupid. So so stupid.
I should have stopped. Or just kept picking flowers until I couldn’t walk. But my stomach was growling and they smelled too good.
Almost an hour later, Avy found me crawling around in the bushes.
“I’m done,” He announced, tugging back the leaves and scaring the spit out of me. “I can’t carry most of it but I’m sure you can handle the rest,” He said, tossing a different sack on my lap. “And I got you some rats.”
“Rats?” I would have shouted, all puzzled and insulted that he’d think I wanted rats for some reason.
Too bad I had three struggling in my unhinged jaw.
I frantically horked them down but Avy had already left.
He saw me! He saw how ugly I was! Why do I have to be so hungry all the time? He saw me swallowing rats!
I was perfect! Tussled black hair, eyes like gold, slim not lanky, down to earth but refined--
--AND SWALLOWING RATS.
I hate this. I hate everything. There’s no point in life anymore.
It’s time to go back to sleep.
