Take Flight, Brothers All - Winged!Clones AU
Nesting Diagrams
Some winged!clones nesting reference sheets/world-building to accompany [Fic] Nests in Take Flight, Brothers All!
These images were drawn specifically to supplement this chapter of my AU, and may not make much sense without reading the fic part first.

Hi!! I love your work an incredible amount, I’m sorry I’m very bad at commenting!
I was wondering if you have any thoughts on Take Flight-verse Echo’s wings during/after his imprisonment and all the cybernetic implants that were involved in that?
(He is my favorite clone, I am very anxious about what the new season of TBB is going to do to him.)
Hey there! Thanks so much for liking my work. Please don't apologize for not commenting either! While I love comments and they fuel me to write/draw more, I never expect them. So it's always an extra special gift when I do get them!
Regarding Echo's wings in Take Flight: It's difficult to say, because his specific situation on Skako Minor depends on multiple canon events, and there's a good chance those events would have happened very differently in this AU, if they happened at all. (for example, an explosion like the one that they thought killed Echo certainly wouldn't normally kill a Shriek Hawk)
So, idk? Assuming things happened exactly as in canon, I guess he might have some cybernetic wing tips, but it would be very difficult to remove his wings entirely while Echo's still alive, since their species specifically evolved to make things difficult for hunters to cut off their wings.
But yeah, sorry, it's late enough in TCW that idk if it'd happen at all in this AU, though who knows! If I do ever get to it, you'll see it in the fic!

Text on the images:
1) Human Clone Body (non AU)
Here we have Cody as an example of a human clone to establish our baseline.
We'll be using him to see how winged clones, or "Shriek Hawks," have different physiology.
(Thank you for your assistance, Cody!)
2) Human Clone + Wings
This is how Cody would look if we just tacked wings onto him, perhaps how we'd expect him to look.
But his torso only shows the muscles that a standard human would have, so this doesn't really work.
Let's take a closer look.
3) Featherless Wing: Approximate Wing Muscles
Rough base musculature of the wing under the feathers (Cody's arm has been removed for better visibility).
The base of wings are both thicker and longer than legs.
(Cursed image, I'm so sorry Cody.)
4) Wing Muscles on Chest
An example of roughly where wing muscles may extend.
*DISCLAIMER: These images are for artistic exploration only. The artist is fully aware this would not work either, and is prioritizing "what looks cool and hot" over "how to make this dude actually look like he could fly."
5) Shriek Hawk Torso Muscles
As a result of the massive wings on their backs, Shriek Hawks must therefore necessarily have extra muscles on their chests. Here, the wing muscles go under his chest muscles for his arms, creating an extra ridge along his ribs. His chest muscles are pushed outwards due to the extra layer of muscles underneath.
In some ways, Shriek Hawks are closer in physiology to other 6-limbed species like Besalisks than humans.
(You can have your arm back.)
(Also this super doesn't work but we're ignoring that.)
6) Human vs Shriek Hawk
Torso Comparison
7) Wing Feathers Extended Onto the Torso
In addition to their wing muscles, Shriek Hawks also have feathers that extend from their wings, onto their backs, and across their torsos.
These feathers serve dual purposes:
1) The "living beskar" properties of the feathers help provide additional protection on their bodies.
2) Shriek Hawks were hunted to near extinction for their valuable wings. The living beskar feathers wrapping onto their torsos makes it almost impossible to remove a Shriek Hawk's wings without first killing them, as like metal beskar, living beskar cannot be cut while Shriek Hawks are alive. Because killing a  Shriek Hawk will cause their feathers to automatically lose the properties that make them valuable in the first place, this discouraged hunters from going after them.
*Some Shriek Hawks, like Jango Fett, are from a sub-species that lose beskar qualities in their feathers even when alive if their feathers are taken without consent. However, knowledge of this quirk of their feathers is limited, and after the start of the Clone Wars, many hunters tried and failed to cut the wings off from living clones.
**Not in the image, but: these feathers are extensions of the wing feathers, and are therefore different from "body feathers" that take the place of human body hair. These feathers will therefore reflect the diverse colors and patterns present in their wings.
~~
Additional Notes:
The feathers on Cody's torso are a bit difficult to see, because the colors of his feathers are close to his skin tone when not hit by light. Many other clones have far more visible feathers, like Waxer (cream) or Rex (dark blue).
If you look at bird physiology, most flying birds have rib cages that are very deep front-back (vs humans who have more horizontally wide rib cages). This is kind of needed in order to support their massive chest muscles for their wings. If I actually wanted to make it look like the Shriek Hawks could fly, I would change their rib cage shape (and probably make their arms tiny like T-Rex arms, and make their legs skinny and light like crane legs, and make their torsos and spines shorter, etc), but this would really start veering away from "humanoid," so I didn't.
Likewise, the "layered muscles" thing wouldn't work at all, they'd get in the way of each other! Really, they should have a whole additional chest for their wings. But that would kinda make them start looking like insects, and again my priority is "keep them looking hot" and less super realistic muscles, so eh. Please ignore. In the SW universe, species like Toydarians can fly too and they definitely don’t make anatomical sense, so whatever ahahahah.
After drawing the cursed plucked Cody wing, I also thought a lot about how terribly unbalanced they would be. The key that made me really think about it is to think of wings like a pair of legs stuck to your back, except they're even bigger, longer, and more muscular than your actual legs. That would not only be heavy as fuck, they'd probably constantly have back pain and be falling over backwards unless they're constantly leaning forward. Their bodies can't be too light or their wings will tip them backwards, but at the same time, their bodies can't be too heavy either or they won't be able to fly. Again this is another one of those things where we just smile and nod and move along :)
Another thing I thought about while drawing this is if they're really more bird-like than mammal-like, they really shouldn't have nipples or belly buttons, assuming they come from eggs. But I suppose the fact that I want to draw nips and buttons states that they're closer to human in that regard, which is fine, because they have interbred with humans, so it would make more sense for near-mammal to be more compatible with humans. This is the SW universe, and I expect creature categories to be more diverse than what we have on Earth anyway.
I also wanted to make another comment about the wing feathers extending onto their torsos. The non-wing "hair-like" body feathers do provide some protection, but not as much as these flatter more "feather-like" feathers that actually completely cover and hide their skin. So then you may ask, wouldn't it be better, from an evolutionary standpoint, if their bodies were also covered in feathers?
And the answer is yes, absolutely! The ancestors of our clones were once very much entirely covered in colorful feathers like that on their wings. However, going back to the history of Shriek Hawks, they're native to Mandalore and were hunted by humans. In order to survive, many of them joined the Mandalorians, thus interbreeding with humans and other non-Shriek Hawk species. Jango's ancestors also bred with Mandalorians. This is significant because it means that the Shriek Hawks relevant to this AU co-evolved with Mandalorians who, surprise surprise! wear beskar armor. Having both living beskar + beskar armor is redundant, and Shriek Hawks began to lose their heavier plumage in the areas where they would wear armor, aka their "human" parts. The only really exposed parts would have been their wings, and again, enough feathers on their backs/around their bodies to prevent hunters from attempting to hack off their wings at the root. So in many ways, how "human" our boys look is a direct result of their Mandalorian ancestry, and I think that's neat!
Kinda relatedly, you'd think that growing out hair (feathers) and facial hair (feathers) would be more protective, and sure, it would, but again the boys' buckets are already stuffed with feathers and I guess feathers rubbing on feathers is kind of uncomfortable. Usually, in combat situations they're fully armored, so it's fine (Looking at u, bald as an egg Waxer).
Also wanted to mention that I deeply contemplated just drawing Cody without undies, because I mean, again he has pubic feathers that cover his dick and all. But I wimped out LMAO!

For full context, please check out the AO3 Compilation for this AU, which not only has the images, but the fics as well!
Thanks for reading!

Hello there! I just finished reading ur Winged Clones AU and I just wanna say, ur art is absolutely amazing and I love ur artstyle. And the way u wrote on how Obi like, gradually learns more about the clones over time, and the fact that he doesn’t try to learn wing sign at first bc he wants to give the clones their own space and stuff just AAAAAAAAAA ITS SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN!!! You certainly have a way with words!!!!!!!
Ahhh thank you so much for enjoying my AU!
As silly as a lot of that AU is, I wanted to be very careful in how I wrote Obi-Wan interacting with the clones. The winged clones have a secretive, closed culture out of necessity, as their culture would not have been allowed to flourish out in the open—much like how I headcanon a lot of canon/canon-compliant clone culture also developed. So many aspects of the culture are built specifically around the need to hide themselves from authority figures who can hurt them: their wing talk so they can communicate without being overheard, their nests so they have a place they can go that's only accessible to them, even their bathing areas designed so other species can't use them and therefore won't enter them.
For all that they like Obi-Wan and trust him a great deal in many aspects of their lives, he's still an outsider and authority figure. He has the power to do them great harm, and that he won't doesn't change that he still could. It's also largely not even a personal thing; only a tiny fraction of the clones even know Obi-Wan, and including an outsider in their culture is a huge deal, because that could affect all clones, not just the ones who consent to welcoming Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan is someone who understands all of this, and tries to show with his actions just how aware he is of the sensitive nature of their situation! And when they choose to include him, he understands the trust he's been given.
I know I haven't updated that AU in a while, but I do promise it's not dead! I've just had too many other priorities, and it's a side project ^ ^;
Thanks again for enjoying my story and writing!

This question popped into my head at work. In the WingFic, when shriek hawks give feathers, would those feathers change if the original owners' wings changed, or would they stay the same color as when plucked?
Yeah, they change. Because it's "living beskar," the feathers are alive as long as their owners are. They die when their owners die, losing their beskar properties. Likewise, if the owner experiences life changing events such that their patterns change, or their affiliation changes so their colors change, all of their living feathers no matter who they're with will also reflect that change.
Hope that answers your question!

That piece of Cody with wings is absolutely phenomenal!! He looks so regal…. I love it. Amazing choice for a banner image too✨
Thanks so much for liking him! I actually completely forgot that he's my banner on mobile ahahah
...and not to self-promote, and self-promote the same thing as yesterday too, but he's actually part of an AU! You can see all of my winged! clones art on Tumblr through the Take Flight, Brothers All AU section of my pinned Masterpost, or alternatively see all parts of the AU together on AO3!

Ok question that's popped into my mind . Since clones all have wings in your au . How do they swim and fight underwater since well there's the mon cala civil war and various aquatic worlds that would become battlegrounds o know that most birds can swim and all but I just wanna hear your opinion on this thanks
Assuming this is for Take Flight.
I feel like I've answered this before but I can't remember, so apologies if my answer differs from what I said then. And I guess my response is, I think it's stupid for more or less baseline human soldiers to be sent to fight underwater anyway (in canon). While many birds can swim, with the exception of penguins, to my knowledge most of those birds pin their wings tightly to their bodies to reduce drag, and then otherwise don't really use their wings in water, except perhaps to help float.
For this AU, I'm sure that clones who happened to come out with slightly slimmer wings are more likely to be assigned to water combat-heavy battalions, like those assigned with Kit. But in general, the wings just create more drag and are largely useless in water except as shields, which is still better than not having them I suppose.

I've seen a few asks and repost of the take flight all brothers au and it got me wondering if you think you might work on it again, I find the idea really cool and I love all of the art you did for it as well
I think the recent asks are a result of me reblogging my old Cody Take Flight art for Cody Day (2/2/24), along with a bunch of my other Cody-centric arts! So it wasn't due to me pushing just that art to hint at something upcoming, unfortunately.
While I don't consider that AU abandoned, I don't see myself working on it in the immediate future. I'm very, VERY bad at working on multiple story projects at the same time, and right now I'm still going full steam ahead on the Prime Override. And while I won't say Take Flight is directionless, and it does have a more serious underlying plot that I was hoping to eventually steer it towards (fully aware that folks who prefer fluffy crack may not like it much), Override is much more focussed, with many goals I'm trying to reach.
Other projects include two Valentine's Day arts that I'm cramming to try to finish before V-Day, a number of other standalone sketches/arts, and of course wary preparation for TBB S3 (all of which u can see WIPs for on my Patreon!). I unfortunately can't do all of these at once!
If there's ever a lull in my inspiration for Override, or I need to take a break, or I suddenly get a spark of inspo, maybe I'll do something then. But for now, i can't promise anything for it at the moment.
Thanks for your understanding!

I swear I love your artwork. Cody with wings makes him look like a benevolent protector. A symbol of strength and protection clad in armor.
Besides Fordo I'd have to say Cody is my top clone.
Thanks so much for liking him! Winged Cody is definitely a protector!

hi feel free to ignore this question if it goes into spoiler territory! (it's about the previous wing fic ask) ((also it's worded a bit weird, sorry about that))
given that wings don't lose their beskar quality until the gifter dies, is there a chance that fives is aware that echo is still alive?
(i'm not too up to speed with star wars stuff, just got really invested in your fics, but) i'm assuming echo is alive, albeit not in the best conditions, so unless there was more to the situation, wouldn't his feathers have been a giveaway that he was alive to fives?
I'm gonna go ahead and post this, but tbh, I don't have much of an answer for you ^ ^; If I ever do happen to include the Citadel in this AU, I'd have to put a lot more thought into it than I can for an ask.
Let's just say that in Take Flight, many specific canon events can't necessarily go the same as canon. In this case, an explosion of the caliber that took out canon Echo would not kill a Shriek Hawk, so if I wanted to stick to the angst and thought-dead, it'd have to be a much worse event, or I just skip that altogether.
Again, if I do happen to ever want to include it in the AU, I"ll write it out then! Hope this is an okay response for now ^ ^;

In Your WingAu, did Anakin has feathers in his clothes ? He was very liked by his men after all
Mm, so my take on the relationship between Anakin and his men, not exclusive to Take Flight, is that it's a bit different than that between Obi-Wan and his men. I think Anakin was well-liked, and generally considered a good leader, and the men who served with him were proud of it.
That being said, while Anakin treated his men like men (at least pre-O66), he also did not care enough about them to prioritize them. He was willing to risk their lives (and lose them) for his droid, for Padme, for a number of personal objectives that had nothing to do with their mission, and which the men could not object to because they were his subordinates. And he did this to an extent that, in my mind, was unheard of among most other Jedi.
So on one hand, General Skywalker's a cool and clever General, who clones can banter with, and who will lead them from the front in combat. On the other, the General is totally okay with clones dying so long as his personal "loved ones" are safe.
In the context of Take Flight, I think that while Anakin might have a couple of feathers, maybe from Rex, he certainly isn't wearing clothes covered in them. Feathers are deeply personal gifts, not obligations or symbols of loyalty. While Anakin and his men are friendly, I think part of the way he treats them forces them to maintain a more professional distance.
I hope this makes sense!

First of all, love the Clonetober and seeing some edge eyes is making me fall for them.
Second, do you have any hc about the clones if so, TELL US PLEASE *baby clone eyes*
Thank you so much for liking my Clonetober project! <3
And well, "headcanons about clones"....I mean yes. I do. But that is such a massive topic, I would be here for twenty years ^ ^;;;
Instead, I'm going to point you at my fics, which are a much more organized presentation of my headcanons!
The Prime Override - May seem really weird at first (and okay, it is pretty weird), but it also includes a great many of my general headcanons for clone culture, clone physiology, clone backstory on Kamino, as well as backstories of individual clones. It is told heavily from Jango's as well as other clones' POVs, with a bit of Obi-Wan, and can be considered a sort-of fix-it, but told in non-chronological order. Most of my core clone headcanons are in this one!
Take Flight, Brothers All - This is my winged!clones AU! It's a multi-media AU with mixed art, fic, and reference sheets. While all of the story in this is obviously focussed around the clones having wings, I think it still incorporates some of my headcanons for clone interactions and personalities!
A Million Bites More Till I'm Yours - My Clones x Obi-Wan Omegaverse fic. This too definitely focuses on the Omegaverse elements, but it also contains headcanons for clone interactions and personalities.
While it hasn't updated in a while, I'm also going to mention my comic Mando Back to the Clone Wars, which is a brother story to The Prime Override. It's an entirely different premise and focus, since it's a Time Travel AU and the protagonist is Boba, but it'll eventually have more clone world-building as well.
Most of my general clone headcanons will be in The Prime Override though, and a lot of my ideas in there can be applied to all of my other works!
If you have very specific headcanon asks that I can answer in a few paragraphs and do not intend to cover in a fic, I might be able to answer in an ask ^ ^; But generally speaking, my fics and my end notes in them are the best places to find my headcanons!
Hope this answered your question!

Hello! When rereading your beautiful fic “Take flight, Brothers all” and had a question. If Order 66 happens in this au, would they still communicate with wingtalk or would they cease to do those “natural” movements? Just picturing the clones standing absolutely still, is unnerving.
Thanks for liking the fic!
Well, if I ever get to O66 in this AU, it's unfortunately not a situation I would really want to cover in an ask response ^ ^; It's definitely interesting to think about though!
Thanks for stopping by!

I wasn’t sure if you’ve answered this already or not so I figured that it would just be easier to ask.
Would it be okay if I made fan art of one of my clone OC’s in your winged clones au? I really like this series and wondered if it would be okay to make and post the drawing, tagging and crediting your au
Hey there! Thanks so much for stopping by to ask!
And of course, please go ahead, and thank you again for caring to ask for permission! I certainly have no monopoly over the idea of "clones with wings," so if that's all you're doing, there's no need for credit.
However, if you're referencing specific things that I created for my AU that you would not have come up with by yourself (e.g., you're referencing my designs wing armor for the clones, my anatomy sheets, my world building, etc), I would appreciate linked credit to myself and my AU so people can find my work!
Something like sticking in, "Inspired by YukiPri's winged clones AU, Take Flight Brothers All." This goes for any platform. You can copy this line in directly if it's easier for you!
Hope that works for you, and thanks again for asking!

Ah ok cause I was watching a video bout the gannets who can swim by basically diving from quite far up and then use that momentum and their webbed feet to swim . My idea was that the clones would dive from high up and then once there in the water use perhaps a modified jetpack or a water intake machine that sucks in water and then shoots it out to propel them at high speeds . And then use the wings as sort of steering controls and even use it to swim by kinda flapping them to propel them forward and then tucking it in to reduce drag
(follow up regarding a Take Flight winged clones AU ask)
Mm I guess? But the thing with most diving bird species is, usually they dive once for a pinpoint targeted prey that they identify from above. Then they have to go back up, mostly useless during the ascent, and have to get in the air again to gain the altitude needed for another attack. It would not work for prolonged combat underwater, nor would it work in a situation where there are hostiles in the water that could prevent them from returning to the surface. They'd probably need jet-packs, like the canon clones and any non-aquatic combatants really, but again I don't think the wings would help very much ^ ^;

Take Flight, Brothers All, "Fic - Bathing, Part 2" is up on AO3!
Bird Bath & Preening.
Also a lotta naked clones.
While the side of the hangar they had entered from had opened into the locker room, the other side of the wall is, at first glance, an enormous pool.
No, not a pool, a bath. A vast, shallow bath. As Stabber touches down with a mighty splash, Obi-Wan notes the hot water doesn't even come up to his hip, and seems to be the right depth for a vod to sit on the bottom with his head well above the surface. It's even bigger than he'd assumed from the surface, as it actually continues underneath the hangar that contains the sonics above.
