What sparked it was a short clip from a vLive going absolutely viral where Lee Know ends up pinning Evie to the wall suggestively and telling her to behave.

Well shortly after the release of Stray Kids’ Japanese song “FAM” was released it sparked a lot of talk around Evie and Hyunjin maybe being together. Both idols and JYP all came out with statements saying how they are not together. Evie said she’s just a very affectionate person and she just adores Skz so much. Hyunjin said that he adores Evie but they are not in a relationship and asked to respect their privacy when it comes to this sorta stuff.

↝☾Time Frame☽↝ April 8th, 2021 ↝☾Public Opinion☽↝ Mixed, mostly confused as to where it came from. ↝☾Popularity☽↝ 90% ↝☾Overview☽↝ The two’s dating rumor started during the beginning of Evie’s hiatus in 2021 after an article came out claiming the two were allegedly dating. Evie had made a post with a series of selfies the two had taken over the couple years they knew each other and was thanking the older boy for being friends with her for so long. She went on to talk about how much she values and cherishes her friendship with him and a lot of people took it as a relationship post instead of a friendship post, it is still up on her Instagram as she didn’t see the point in taking it down since she hadn’t done anything wrong. Both JYP and SM made statements the next day stating that the idols were not in a relationship.

Their company quickly shut down the rumor and it actually put a bit of a dent in the two’s friendship for a while. Neither of them wanting to be bring hate to their company or groups so for a while they didn’t hang out or talk much but in mid 2023 the two got spotted getting coffee together again so it seems like the friendship is back in full swing

These images were included in an article that alleged the two have been dating for a while. Evie and New confirmed that they were in a relationship with their companies, however they just started dating when this article went out so it wasn’t entirely truthful. The two mutually decided that they should break up after about six months of being together. Evie said she felt like she couldn’t give him the time and affection he needed as she was always busy toward the end of their relationship but she said they are still friends.

Wardrobe Malfunction

↝☾Time Frame☽↝ March 30th, 2023 ↝☾Public Opinion☽↝ Shocked and Slightly Disappointed ↝☾Popularity☽↝ 100% ↝☾Overview☽↝ During Stray Kids’ performance of  ‘Maniac’ on Jimmy Kimmel’s live show Evie had a massive wardrobe malfunction with her shirt where the front of the shirt somehow got untied while she was dancing. She was very professional about it and held onto her chest with one hand as she danced. However, Hyunjin, once he noticed, quickly put his jacket on her to cover her and she quickly buttoned it between dance moves so she could go back to focusing on giving the best performance she possibly could. Although the public was a bit disappointed as this was Evie’s first ever wardrobe malfunction, which happened at something that Evie was looking forward to, they also were pleasantly surprised by how professional and fast acting they were to fix something like that. Evie said she had asked the stylist for a jacket specifically because she didn’t trust the top but they refused and so Evie felt like the stylist was sabotaging her and sabotaging the performance to stir drama. Since then Evie has refused to wear any outfits from that specific stylist and has said that she truly doesn’t care for that stylist's opinion anymore and doesn’t care if she gets fired. Skz also refuse to be styled by that particular stylist and it's rumored that she did in fact get fired after this instance as it wasn't the first time she has willingly dressed Evie semi scandalously. After this Evie was given a lot more control of her outfits.

It was quickly put to rest with a very heartbroken Evie asking to be left alone. She went live on YouTube and begged for everyone to stop making all her encounters with someone a romantic thing. She just wants to make friends and people are scared to be her friend because of the fact so many times people accuse her of being in a relationship. In this live she also said she’d be open if she was in a relationship as she doesn’t like hiding it. She said that she is just tired and to leave her and her friends alone. JYP and Hybe both also released statements saying the pair were just hanging out for the first time as they wanted to become better friends. JYP also asked people to not believe every rumor they see and to let Evie breathe.

Vlad III Draculea was the voivode (a prince-like military leader) of Walachia—a principality that joined with Moldavia in 1859 to form Romania—on and off between 1448 and 1476. Also known as Vlad III, Vlad Dracula (son of the Dragon), and—most famously—Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes in Romanian), he was a brutal, sadistic leader famous for torturing his foes. By some estimates he is responsible for the deaths of more than 80,000 people in his lifetime—a large percentage of them by impalement.

Walachia had been ravaged by the ceaseless Ottoman-Hungarian conflict and the internecine strife among feuding boyars. Trade had ceased, fields lay fallow, and the land was overrun by lawlessness. Vlad III began his reign with a strict crackdown on crime, employing a zero-tolerance policy for even minor offences, such as lying.

As for the boyars—the high-ranking figures who had killed his father and older brother— Vlad III had a retributive plan. In 1459 he invited 200 of them to a great Easter banquet, together with their families. There, he had the women and the elderly stabbed to death and impaled; the men he forced into slave labour. Many of these workers would die of exhaustion while building Poenari Castle, one of Vlad III’s favourite residences.

Many of the Germans under Vlad III’s aegis were Saxons. Not to be confused with the Anglo-Saxons of England, these were German migrants who had settled in Transylvania in the 12th century after the region was conquered by Hungary. They were mostly well-to-do merchants, but to Vlad III, they were allies of his enemies.

Over the next few years, Vlad III razed entire Saxon villages and impaled thousands of people. In 1459, when the Transylvanian Saxon city of Kronstadt (today Brasov) supported a rival of Vlad III’s, the voivode’s response was savage. After initially placing trade restrictions on Saxon goods in Walachia, he had 30,000 people impaled—and reportedly dined among them so he could witness their suffering personally. He also had Kronstadt burned to the ground. Back in Walachia, he impaled Saxon merchants who violated his trade laws.

Vlad III’s tactics, both on and off the battlefield, against the Turks were extraordinarily brutal. In the spring of 1462, Mehmed II assembled an army of 90,000 men and advanced on Walachia. After conducting a series of night raids and guerrilla warfare, Vlad III employed his trademark tactic, impaling more than 23,000 prisoners with their families and putting them on display along the enemy’s route, outside the city of Targoviste.“There were infants affixed to their mothers on the stakes,” writes the French historian Matei Cazacu, “and birds had made their nests in their entrails.”The sight was so horrifying that Mehmed II, after seeing the “forest” of the dead, turned around and marched back to Constantinople. Vlad III wrote to Matthias I explaining that he had “killed peasants, men and women, old and young . . . We killed 23,884 Turks, without counting those whom we burned in homes or the Turks whose heads were cut by our soldiers.” To prove the truth of his words, he produced sacks full of severed noses and ears.

okay so the TL;DR above the cut shall be the three fun facts about her, but for those who want to read more info about her, please look under the cut or follow my Willow-specific side blog because I plan to write A LOT more about her in the future <3 <3 

1) Willow’s go-to karaoke song is Hotel California by the Eagles 2) Around Christmas 2020 in game (it’s currently March 5th 2021), Elysium in Amsterdam changed locations, but the Prince at the time had Willow’s Sire in Torpor in the basement. That needed moving. Willow had her kine roommate buy a fake Christmas tree, then used the box it came in to bring her Sire from the old to the new location while dressed as an elf. It went surprisingly smoothly. 3) When everyone was invited to a masquerade ball in a theatre, Willow’s outfit was EXCESSIVE. But also it was appreciated by many. She wore a dress that was black on the outside, red on the inside, and completely inversible. Basically a play on the Queen of Hearts and Queen of Spades. The reveal of the second look was used to give her a good excuse to go snooping around. 

OKAY WHAT ARE THE VIBES? HERE’S A LOT OF INFO ON WILLOW THAT I’VE NEVER REALLY WRITTEN DOWN BUT LIVES RENT FREE IN MY HEAD SO ENJOY (:

Willow’s vibes are immaculate. She’s an South Dakotan in Amsterdam, moved here for university, and never finished her communications degree because she never managed to quite find her footing.  Like she struggled to find housing, and the stress of that added to the work load of her degree really just pushed her to substance abuse... and that just ended up being a bit of a negative spiral she only managed to get out when she met her two best friends / (ex-)roommates. I could go on about so many bonds in there it’s so much words I can tell you.... But eh she first met her Sire one day when she and her two friends were out at a club, and he just drew her attention from across the room. To her, it was basically love at first sight, to him it was a calculated use of Presence. She was just immediately smitten with him, and since he was super hot, her friends were super glad she finally got a shot at happiness!! He helped her get her student visa changed to permanent residency, and he’s the guy who got her a job at his brothel, which Willow was happy to do (until the brothel was blown up but that’s an entirely different can of worms). At the brothel, kine and kindred worked side by side, and after a while Willow was taken on a lovely spa day to get her in Pristine Condition before she was eventually Embraced. She is also probably her Sire’s favourite (or at least was unTIL HE WAS KILLED.) 

anyway for a long time Willow was voted Least Likely to Die in their Coterie Yearbook, then suddenly went to Most Likely to Die, but now certain people have been making horrible decisions so she’s probably back to Least Likely to Die. 

Basically Willow is just really pretty but there’s probably very little coherent thoughts in her head. She’s generally very calculated, but that just means her calculated actions are absolutely unhinged. Stole the white king from the Malkavian Seneschal who has one of her best friend’s blood-bound to him unhinged. She’s viciously loyal to a select few, a pro at fake it till you make it, and even better at fucking around and finding out.  Also she holds Grudges occasionally. Like she’s been mad at her sire’s sire for months for not getting a personal apology.

Interest rates reach 22-year high and may get higher

The last time interest rates were this high, President George W. Bush had just taken office and the MP3 player was king. Yesterday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell announced another quarter-point hike to try to temper inflation, bringing interest rates into the 5.25%–5.50% range for the first time since January 2001.

This is the 11th rate increase since March 2022, when interest rates were raised from nearly zero. And the Fed might not be done: Powell said one more rate hike is still on the table for later this year.

Searching for that inflation sweet spot

Whether we’ll see another increase soon depends on what happens between now and the Fed’s next meeting in September. Powell and Co. will be watching to see if consumer prices come down.

There are some promising signs that the worst is behind us:

Tomorrow, when the government releases the latest personal consumption expenditures price index—the Fed’s preferred measure for tracking inflation—it’s expected to show the lowest inflation increase since the end of 2021. And last month, the consumer price index showed inflation fell to 3%, which is above the Fed’s 2% target but an improvement from last June’s 9.1%.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola—whose prices were 10% higher last quarter compared to Q2 2022—said it’s done marking up drinks for the year, and the CFO of Unilever said the packaged goods giant’s price inflation has peaked (though prices may still get higher).

But the Fed wants more: Powell said that for inflation to be truly conquered, the job market, which currently boasts a low unemployment rate of 3.6%, will need to slow its roll.

Looking ahead…if consumer prices don’t stay “durably down” over the next couple months, JPow said it’s “certainly possible” that a 12th rate hike could be the charm, as everyone holds their breath and waits to see whether the Fed can really tackle inflation without bringing on a recession.

Last week, the Fed had some interesting things to say about a recession in the United States: “The staff now has a noticeable slowdown in growth starting later this year in the forecast. But given the resilience of the economy recently they are no longer forecasting a recession,” said Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Definition: A soft landing refers to a moderate economic slowdown following a period of growth. The economy doesn't enter a full-blown recession in a soft landing.

Artur Beterbiev vs. Anthony Yarde Fight Preview

In his second world title attempt, Anthony Yarde (23-2, 22 KOs) will be facing the grandest of all challenges when he attempts to dethrone formidable, unified light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev (18-0, 18 KOs) on 28 January 2023 at Wembley Arena, London.

Yarde’s first title fight came against Sergey Kovalev in August 2019 while challenging for the Russian’s WBO title, losing via TKO in the 11th round.

Yarde will now face an even greater challenge in the form of the undefeated Beterbiev, the only champion in boxing today with a 100% KO ratio.

This will be Beterbiev’s first professional fight in the UK, with all of his fights thus far, with the exception of the Adam Deines fight in Moscow in March 2021, having taken place in his adopted home of Canada and the US.

Beterbiev won his first world title in November 2017 when he stopped Enrico Koelling in the 12th round to win the vacant IBF title. Beterbiev defended his IBF belt twice, including against Britain’s Callum Johnson, before the Russian entered a unification against WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk in October 2019. Gvozdyk, the technically skilled Ukrainian puncher, unbeaten at the time, was down three times in the tenth round, forcing the referee’s stoppage. Beterbiev defended his IBF and WBC belts against Deines and Marcus Browne before entering a three-belt unification against WBO champion Joe Smith Jr in June 2022 at the Hulu Theater, Madison Square Garden.

This was Beterbiev’s most recent outing, in which he demolished the reigning WBO champion in two rounds. With this devastating unification victory, Beterbiev became just one step away from becoming undisputed light heavyweight champion, with compatriot Dmitry Bivol holding the only other belt, the WBA (Super) title.

As things stand, only the supremely talented Bivol is viewed as a significant threat to Beterbiev in the 175 lbs division.

Beterbiev said at the announcement press conference in London: “Long time ago I been here for the Olympic Games, 2012, and I’m happy to be here. We will see what happens on 28 January. I don’t want to talk a lot, you know, I want to do something on 28 January.”

Unassuming and not a man to talk much, he was more eager to let his fighting do the talking as opposed to the customary trash-talking often commonplace in boxing today. His fighting has, indeed, made a lot of noise. 18 professional fights is not a lot on paper. Still, Beterbiev has overcome a lot in those fights, a variety of opponents, styles, and challenges, to prove his pedigree as a real champion. Gvozdyk was a really good champion. Beterbiev wore Gvozdyk down and forced a stoppage. He overcame the most adversity in his career by scoring come-from-behind fourth and ninth-round stoppages against Johnson and Browne.

Johnson dropped Beterbiev in the second round before Beterbiev weathered the storm to stop Johnson two rounds later. Against Browne, with blood leaking from a horrendous cut on Beterbiev’s forehead, the referee said the Russian would only be given one more round to resurrect his hopes of holding onto his titles. At this point, Beterbiev did what the truly elite champions do. He moved up a gear and battered Browne into submission.

Yarde’s first title came in his 11th fight when he stopped Chris Hobbs in four rounds to win the Southern Area title. Yarde then subsequently had seven consecutive fights, none of which lasted more than seven rounds, in which he made defenses of the WBO European title and the WBO Inter-Continental title. After the Kovalev loss, which was his first significant step-up as a professional, Yarde had a comeback fight against Colombian journeyman Diego Jair Ramirez in Madrid, then domestic dust-ups against Dec Spelman and Lyndon Arthur. Yarde suffered a split decision loss against Arthur, and after a swift first-round knockout victory in his comeback fight in Birmingham, Yarde looked for redemption against his Manchester rival. Yarde blasted himself back into title contention, stopping Arthur in four rounds to regain his WBO No. 1 spot.

Yarde stated in the announcement press conference: “When I’m shouting ‘Lions in the Camp’, it’s not no gimmick. Lions have no choice but to go and hunt, or they go hungry, and I’ve got that same mentality.”

One thing the “Beast From the East” cannot be accused of is having a lack of heart. Yarde has chased both title shots against two of the best light heavyweights of the past decade, with the first being in Kovalev’s hometown of Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Yarde also stated: “I’m going to be switched on. I’m going to be sharp, I’m going to be fast.”

Yarde’s confidence and courage cannot be faulted whatsoever. Olivia is photographed back in LA on August 3, shopping for housewares, toys, and bedding. On the 6th, she’s photographed at the gate of a house in Los Feliz. At first, the paparazzi don’t know she lives there and media outlets refer to the place as a “friend’s house”. The Los Feliz house belongs to musician and designer Lourdes Hernández González and her husband, entrepreneur Zach Leigh. Harry and Olivia rent temporarily.

07/08/2021 – Harry is photographed at the gate of the Los Feliz house greeting a guest for a party he and Olivia threw that day (most likely to celebrate the new house), according to the Daily Mail. Olivia is also photographed on the sidewalk, about to enter.

07/08/2021 – In the evening, Harry and Olivia go to a Cinespia screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. They watch “The Big Lebowski”, which is one of Olivia’s favorite films. She later posts a photo of the screen on her Instagram.

08/08/2021 – They’re photographed strolling in Los Feliz and meeting with friends Tyler Johnson and Lindsay Marias. On this day Harry is photographed wearing a hat that reads “Katie and Conor are my friends”, which was a gift to the guests of Katie Silberman’s (“Booksmart” and “Don Worry Darling” writer) wedding in 2018. The hat belongs to Olivia and Harry later uses it as inspiration for his tour merch.

09/08/2021 – They’re photographed leaving a gym in Santa Monica.

11/08/2021 – A fan meets Harry and Olivia in Malibu.

Jason and the children return to Los Angeles shortly after the 11th. Otis and Daisy now split their time between Los Feliz with their mother and Harry and Silver Lake with their father.

14/08/2021 – A Los Angeles Magazine article published on August 24 would reveal that on this day Harry and Olivia were at another Cinespia screening, this time for “Clueless”.

19/08/2021 – Harry and Olivia are spotted by fans at Griffith Park.

20/08/2021 – Otis and Daisy’s music school posts a video of them singing “Watermelon Sugar” on Instagram. After getting harassed, the school deletes the video.

Around this time, Harry finishes Harry's House.

On August 31, Olivia is seen arriving at a studio in West Hollywood, possibly to work on “Babylon”. On September 1st, she’s seen at an airport, and people assume she’s going to meet Harry in Las Vegas.

04/09/2021 – Olivia attends the first Love On Tour show in Las Vegas. She and Harry are later seen leaving the venue together.

07/09/2021 – Olivia attends the LOT show in Denver, but only stays out for “Golden”. It’s possible that she went to a private lounge.

Olivia returns to LA shortly after the Denver show. Harry goes to Texas.

On the 19th, Olivia returns to LA, where she concedes an interview for her upcoming Vogue cover story. Harry goes to Michigan, Minnesota, and then Illinois.

12/10/2021 – Olivia leaves LA and meets Harry in Raleigh. In the evening, she attends his LOT show in the city.

After the show in Boston, Olivia flies to NYC to oversee the sound mixing of “Don’t Worry Darling”, while Harry goes to Atlanta. After the two shows in Georgia, Harry flies to NYC.

30/10/2021 – Olivia attends the first night of Harryween in New York City.

31/10/2021 – Olivia leaves NYC and returns to LA carrying a custom Bode bag that people assume was a gift from Harry.

A couple days after Harryween, Harry goes to Milwaukee and then to Seattle.

In the week of 07/11/2021-13/11/2021, Olivia is in NYC. During this time Harry is touring Tacoma, Portland, Sacramento, San Jose, and Glendale. Olivia returns to LA on the 14th.

15/11/2021 – Olivia attends the LOT show in San Diego with Otis and Daisy. At one point, Anne, Harry’s mother, dances with Otis.

Olivia doesn’t attend the first two shows in Inglewood. There is a possibility that she was in New York.

20/11/2021 – Olivia attends the third LOT show in Inglewood with Otis and Daisy. Not many photos or videos of them are taken this day.

After this show, Harry goes to Houston, where he performs on the 23rd, while Olivia stays behind with the kids. They meet again sometime after the 24th when she’s last seen in LA.

28/11/2021 – Olivia attends the LOT show in Elmont. At one point, she and Des (Harry’s dad) hug.

Rumor that in the week of 28/11/2021-04/12/2021 they had a short holiday on a private island. They are not photographed at all from the 29th to the 6th when Olivia is seen in LA. Harry is supposedly in London.

09/12/2021 – Olivia is revealed as the cover of Vogue’s January 2022 edition. In the interview, she addresses her relationship with Harry for the first time, but without naming him.

Harry is photographed in London doing reshoots for “My Policeman” on the 13th, then flies to Italy on the 17th. Olivia follows soon later, being spotted in LA for the last time on the 18th.

Some fans meet Harry and Olivia on the 23rd, but they don’t share this information (and a photo of Harry) until January when they both are in London.

A few days before Christmas, stalkers find out Harry and Olivia are in Italy with their families and spread the information around, but nothing is confirmed until the 27th.

27/12/2021 – Harry and Olivia are spotted strolling in the province of Viterbo, where Harry owns a house.

Harry, Olivia, and his family fly back to London on the 28th, as one of Gemma's posts on her Instagram Stories on the morning of the 29th show that she’s home (flight records also show that a private plane left Rome for London on the 28th).

31/12/2021-01/01/2022 – Harry and Olivia are seen near Hampstead Heath in the morning, and in the evening, they attend a New Year’s party with James and Julia Corden.

In the first week of January, Jason moves to England with the children, as seen in a photo posted on Instagram by his friend and co-star Brendan Hunt.

On January 19, some fans from Cornwall find out Harry is there, but they keep this information a secret until the 21st when he leaves. They refuse to say whether or not Olivia was with him, but someone’s stepmother's friend says she saw him with “his girlfriend” in a pub, though no details about her appearance are given. Also on January 19, Love On Tour 2022 is announced.

After leaving Cornwall, Harry goes to the United States and stays there until the 27th, when he flies back to London.

01/02/2022 – For Harry’s 28th birthday, they rent St. JOHN Bread and Wine and have a dinner party. The next day, Olivia posts a picture of herself at the party on her Instagram Stories.

On February 16, Diana Tarazaga-Orero, who’s been stalking Harry since 2019, breaks into Erskine House – Harry’s main residence in London – while he’s there. Tarazaga-Orero is charged with using force to get into the house, breaking a vase, assaulting a woman working there, and breaching the restraining order she got in 2019. Whether or not Olivia and the children were also there is unclear.

27/02/2022 – On Instagram Stories, Olivia posts a photo playing with her kids while wearing an elephant head plush mask, owned by Harry and previously worn by him at a Halloween party in 2013.

Sometime between the 21st and the 27th of February, they’re filmed in a restaurant with friends.

As a highlight to the mob nature leading to Zhang’s downfall, please consider the timeline immediately before and after Zhang’s losing his endorsements on August 13th (or, why August 13th really mattered):

August 12th, evening: Zhang’s 2019 attendance of a wedding at the Nogi Shrine (乃木神社) went on Weibo hot search, and into public awareness. The Nogi Shrine (乃木神社) is of far less fame than the Yasukuni Shrine, but was named after a Japanese general of the Imperialist Japanese Army who was also the governor-general of then colonial Taiwan.

August 13th, ~ 2 am: netizens uncovered photos of Zhang’s 2018 visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, which were spread onto Weibo and made the hot search.

August 13th, 1:39 pm: Zhang posted his first letter of apology that began with: “Today, I’m ashamed of my once ignorant self, and furthermore, wants to apologise deeply for my past inappropriate behaviour.” (今天我為曾經無知的自己而羞愧，更要對之前不當行為深刻地道歉。)

August 13th, 2 pm: Nabuo Kishi, Japan’s current Minister of Defence, and a right-wing member of the House of Representative, Yasutoshi Nishimura, made an un-announced visit to the Yasukuni Shrine. The date was 2 days earlier than the 76th anniversary of Emperor Hirohito’s surrender speech (August 15th), as customary for Japanese officials to avoid visiting the shrine on significant anniversary dates of the war.

August 13th, 4:39 pm: People’s Daily (人民日報) published an online critique of Zhang’s apology. “… As a public figure, to be so lacking in historical knowledge, so unfeeling towards the suffering of the nation, it’s too inappropriate. On matters of righteousness of the nation, testing is not permissible, challenges are definitely not permissible. If knowingly committed, one would pay a heavy price.”  (。。。身為公眾人物，對歷史常識如此匱乏，對民族苦難渾然不覺，太不應該。事關民族大義，不容任何試探，更不容有任何挑戰。若明知故犯，就得付出沈重代價。)

August 13th, 5:05 pm: CCTV News (央視新聞) posted the video of Nabuo Kishi’s visit to the Yasukuni Shrine.

August 13th, 5:33: Zhang was dropped from his first endorsement. He would be dropped by all 27 of them within the next 5 hours.

August 13th, 5:35 pm: Zhang responded to People’s Daily’s critique piece, stating he shall repent and learn his lesson, and that as a Chinese, he loves his country and the CCP.

August 13th, ~6 pm: S. Korean news reported that the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs had summoned the Japanese ambassador in Korea to protest the visit of the Japanese Defence Minister to the Yasukuni Shrine.

August 13th, 6:26 pm: CCTV News (央視新聞) critiqued Zhang’s apology. “Whether to take photos in front of the Yasukuni Shrine, or to attend a wedding at the Nogi Shrine, Zhang Zhehan touched the wounds of history, hurt the feelings of the nation. It cannot be blamed on “once ignorance.” Just now, a Japanese Minister went to the Yasukuni Shrine for “demon worshipping” (Pie note: demon, from guizi 鬼子), China firmly opposes to this wrongdoing of Japanese high officials…” (無論在靖國神社前合影，還是到乃木神社參加婚禮，張哲瀚都觸碰了歷史傷痕，傷害了民族感情，不能簡單歸咎為「曾經無知」。就在剛剛，有日本大臣到靖國神社「拜鬼」，中方堅決反對日本政要這種錯誤做法。。。)

August 13th, 9 pm: China’s Ministry of National Defence answered press questions regarding the Yasukuni Shrine visit by Nabuo Kishi and Yasutoshi Nishimura.

Not only did Zhang’s incident happened in August, 2021, it happened on pretty much the worst day for him in August, 2021; the latest of his incident interleaved the unfolding news of the Japanese high officials’ visit to the Yasukuni Shrine.

What I’d like to call attention to, however, is this: Zhang’s endorsements didn’t begin dropping until *after* People’s Daily criticism.

If the companies had been genuinely offended by Zhang’s action, why was the wait necessary? If their Chinese feelings were genuinely hurt, why hadn’t they moved earlier, in the morning of August 13th, when Zhang’s visit went on hot search? Were these companies also ignorant about history, the significance of the the Yasukuni Shrine? The Chinese government has far more important things to worry about than an idol, but what about these companies that had paid good money for their spokesperson? That watch the public opinion, the market carefully?

Even if they didn’t care about the war themselves, why hadn’t they dropped Zhang based on the expected public opinion? What does that say about what these market experts believed, or knew about the public opinion? What does that say about their assessment of whether their potential customers would, as their actual selves, stop spending money on their products because of Zhang’s Yasukuni Shrine visit?

Were the act of dropping Zhang, then, more an act of performative patriotism than anything else? Once the first company started, the rest raced to follow for fear of being the slowest one, viewed as the least patriotic one. Hence, the 5-hour storm of endorsements abandoning Zhang. This herd ... mob behaviour, in which actions were either not taken or all taken at the same time, was also observed in the timing of different online platforms removing Zhang’s works, and fandom content with his name.

A “bingo card” for netizens to cross out Zhang’s endorsements as the sequential drops happened. Similar cards for Kris Wu had circulated in July. 

Were WoH and Zhang’s other group projects removed because Zhang was unpatriotic, or was it because the online platforms (and the tech giants behind them) were trying to protect themselves? Youku explained WoH’s first-time removal as a technical glitch but then, as reports of other platforms removing Zhang’s content poured in, the series was removed again.  

How much is real when it comes to the thunderous online declarations of love and betrayal against China? 

Related to this: turtles may remember the Xinjiang cotton incident in March, 2021, how Chinese netizens harassed anyone who used, endorsed Nike. One may assume, with that outcry, that rage, that anyone with a reputation to keep, with ties to the Chinese state, in particular, have severed their ties with the brand.

As it turns out, the teams of the Chinese Super (Football) League, for example, have kept their Nike kits. The Chinese Football Association (CFA), which, despite being officially non-governmental and nonprofit, is managed by the State General Administration of Sports (國家體育總局), issued a statement on March 27th on Weibo that only criticised Nike’s “wrong actions in choosing its cotton source” (對耐克公司在棉花原料選擇上的錯誤行徑表達了譴責), and reserved “its right to further deal with  contract with Nike” (保留進一步處理同耐克合同的權力). It never cut off the contract with Nike: a 10-year sponsorship,  signed in 2018, which amounts to 3 million RMB (463,000 USD) in funds from Nike for each football club every year. The CFA statement was later removed from Weibo. Photos of the football players have simply had the Nike Swoosh covered up, or photoshopped away.

Life is practical in China … and darkly humorous, at times. As a Mao-founded regime should be, perhaps.

I got Asks wondering then: will our non-Zhang-related favourite stars and CPs, dramas and fandoms get affected by the incident?

At the moment, my guess leans towards a no. My basis is this: in the critique piece against Zhang, published on 2021/08/16, by 中纪委 Central Commission for Discipline Inspection—the CCDI, by the way, is the highest anti-corruption, rules and regulations body in China—I believe the reason Zhang was disciplined was clearly stated:

對於所有「拜鬼」行為，中國都堅決反對。但如果我們國內的公眾人物去靖國神社都不被譴責和追究，我們又怎麼挺直腰桿要求外國人不去呢？

“Regarding all “demon worship” behaviour, China holds firm oppositions. But if our own public figures going to the Yasukuni Shrine get no reprimands, no investigations of responsibility, how can we straighten our backs and demand foreigners to not go?”

This has led me to think the state has no ulterior motives in targeting Zhang: Zhang’s “sin” was limited to his visiting the Yasukuni Shrine as a well-known, public figure, and/but that was enough. And the punishment had to be given in a heavy-handed, high profile manner, given the “news “of Zhang’s visit broke out on August 13, 2021. The following observation may be my being over-sensitive, but in the timeline above, Zhang was reprimanded, and his first round of the punishment in full swing (dropping of endorsements), before the China’s Ministry of National Defence talked to the press, which happened later than it had to be (compare the timing with S. Korea’s). Short of removing Zhang’s hot searches—which netizens would’ve noticed—this ordering of events was necessary; otherwise, the Chinese government issuing a formal complaint against Japan for their Minister of Defence’s visit to the shrine would’ve co-existed on the hot search with the report of China’s own celebrity visiting the same place. I therefore believe the state’s reaction had nothing to do with how Zhang achieved his fame, the past and present projects he was involved in, the CPs he was coupled with. Other state agencies and media would likely be careful about not attaching these topics to Zhang’s case as well, so not to distract from the central message of the government that … the Japanese are very bad people in the summer of 2021.

(Whether they’ll attach them to the Clear and Bright campaign is another matter.) 

Another Ask ~ Will Zhang be able to make a comeback? In five years? Ten?

Looking that far ahead is difficult, but one thing has to happen for Zhang to return—the Japanese have to stop being very bad people according to the Chinese government, which isn’t likely to happen soon. The Japanese government has shown few signs that they shall soon revise their attitudes towards their World War II history  (Yasutoshi Nishimura, who went to the Shrine with Japan’s Minister of Defence on August 13th, is associated with a historical revisionist group), while China’s escalating military aggression in the Indo-Pacific region will be seen as a growing threat to Japan, likely push the country towards the right. 

And 5, 10 years later, Zhang will be 35, 40 years old. Even if he’ll be able to work in the industry again, it’ll be difficult for him to achieve the fame he has before. Also, just because the government no longer bans him doesn’t mean production companies will be willing to hire him; he’ll be considered high risk—policies of China are volatile, after all, and the decision to un-ban can be easily reversed.

And... here’s a thought I’ll finally end this meta series with. I don’t see Zhang as the only loser in this incident. I don’t really see any winners in this incident at all. An industry is dangerous for its every worker if its narrative, its list of guilty is penned by cyber mobs and in the name of patriotism; if the accused cannot speak for themselves, aren’t allowed to grow; if its rules of appropriate conduct are every-changing (The Reporter in 2017 = OK; Zhang in 2018 = Not OK); if its workers are penalised not by their own deeds but their associations (the rest of the cast and production team of WoH and other Zhang-associated projects).

The think tank for the National Ratio and Television Authority (國家廣播電視總局; NRTA, ie, the Chinese visual media censorship board), in their criticism piece about Zhang, hinted at even rougher waters ahead, in light of Zhang’s (and Kris Wu’s) transgressions:

明星頻頻「犯事」，說到底還是行業內對明星藝德約束不夠嚴格。據瞭解，電影行業正在籌備全國電影界道德委員會，將對電影從業人員道德規範提出更高要求，並提出，要將明星藝德納入法治化的軌道中來，給明星藝德約束加一道法規之鎖，明確明星的責任和義務，將明星的個人行為與職業利益掛鈎。 “The ultimate cause of stars “getting into trouble” frequently is that the industry has not tied a sufficiently severe bind on the stars’ artistic virtue (Pie note: roughly, = professional ethics). Based on reports, the film industry is preparing a National Film Industry Morality Committee that shall raise the moral requirements for film industry workers. The industry has also suggested that the stars’ artistic virtue shall eventually be governed by laws, to add a lock of legality to the bind of artistic virtues for the stars, to make clear the stars’ responsibilities and obligations, to couple a star’s personal behaviour with their professional (monetary) gains.”

My interpretation of this: should the suggestions become reality, it shall be written in future film contracts that a star who commits an act that the state considers immoral will have to pay the investors the production cost of their projects, and possibly, the projected profit. 

To put some dollar signs to this interpretation: a high-profile star may work on one or more projects with a price tag in the order of 100 million RMB (~15 million USD); box office, merchandise sells, and long term profits expected from online streaming can raise that number by several fold. This is a sum that even the most affluent stars will have a difficult time affording—and that’s before considering the endorsements, for which current contracts already require the stars to pay the damages.

The key word here is that the offending act only has to be considered immoral, not criminal. Immoral acts range from not liking the CCP enough—an easy-to-understand offence—to deviation from the society’s 公序良俗 (“public order and fine customs”), which includes just about anything that disagrees with the state-defined mainstream values.

Stars are stars because they invite the imaginations of their audience, because they break boundaries: from the seemingly insurmountable humdrum of daily life, to something that can be much, much more.

Stars should, of course, be law-abiding; they should be patriotic. But a star who’s mainstream in every way? Are they still a star, something we regular people wonder about, dream upon?

Bind and lock, the NRTA think tank referred to these suggestions. It reminders me of a quote by the famous Chinese director, Feng Xiaogang (馮小剛), who, in 2014, complained to BBC—perhaps in a slip of tongue—that Chinese directors could be like “dancing with fetters” (戴著腳鐐去跳舞) when working with the country’s censorship system.

Yeah. It’s kinda like that.

Just a few examples of the times he was papped around his neighborhood or literally right on his front doorstep!! If he had a restraining order against paps that would not have happened!! He clearly called them on most, of not all those instances! If he didn’t wanted them out there they would not have been published! Funnily enough, he was NOT ONCE!! papped „randomly“ in 2021 in London (outside of work, like MP filming for example!) instead we got douzens of staged „Holivia“ walks, mostly pics taken from the back or other „fan pics“ and of course Cockburns many pap walks, where she did literally NOTHING, which compared to literal NONE Harry pap pics are even more hilarious and obvious! When a A-list star like Harry not ONCE got papped randomly in London during a whole ass year but girly did get papped like 15 times in one month, in some random part of London,… I mean… it’s OBVIOUS isn’t it?!

I‘m curious to know why he started getting papped „randomly“ in London this year again?
