It was almost evening in Woxardam. The warm touch of the sun’s light was giving way to cool darkness minute by minute, and the workers were beginning to pull away from the streets and into their abodes to partake in their usual relaxing activities before settling in for the night.
For one Zephry Drux, that relaxing activity was dancing with his darling pet dog, Djalla, to the tune of their favorite song.
"By the Great Red Spot they dance in harmony,
No ground, only sky,
Orange clouds as far as their eyes could see~
Wherever they’d hunt or float or sink,
One thing is for sure,
There was more to them than anyone could ever think~"
“Ballad of the Jovians” was first put to parchment at least 150 years before Zephry’s birth, when the king of all the planets, Jupiter (then known as Jove), was first discovered through the lense of an up-and-coming astronomer’s crazy invention known simply as the telescope.
It was an unconventional tune for the time, set to a slow, gentle 4/4 time signature like a typical ballad, yet had a swaying quality like a waltz. The lyrics spoke of bizarre alien lifeforms known only to the imagination - floating, sinking, and hunting in the colorful layered clouds of the gas giant’s mysterious atmosphere. It was a song unlike any other about a subject unlike any other. The people could not get enough of it. It was not long before everyone was singing and dancing along to the Ballad of the Jovians in dance halls all across Woxardam.
Generations later, Zephry’s mother would sing it to him on cold rainy nights when he was too frightened by the raging thunder to sleep, occasionally taking him into her arms and swaying about the room in much the same way as her parents did when they first heard the song being played by an orchestra on their first date. Within minutes, Zephry’s worried frown would metamorphose into a hopeful smile. If the Jovians could merrily dance so close to the eternal raging storm that was the Great Red Spot, then Sverennites could share a dance during a thunderstorm. Another point to his late mother for making what was once impossible possible.
Decades down the line, Zephry would stumble across a scared, emaciated stray puppy hiding in an old crate away from the freezing pouring rain. In her eyes, he saw nothing but the same fear he once had on thunderous nights like this. He couldn't just leave her there alone. So, he did the only thing he knew to try and assuage the poor creature – take her into his arms and sing “Ballad of the Jovians”.
At first, she whined and struggled to get free of him, fearing that this was yet another strange man trying to capture her. But as he continued to sing, the puppy could not help but relax more and more, slowly leaning into his tender touch. Eventually, she settled down enough to where her only movements were her shuttered breathing and involuntary trembling.
"There, there, now, dear. Let's get you inside, eh?" Zephry whispered with a smile. He cradled the still shivering puppy close to his chest and carried her all the way back to The Sabre, Tooth and Tiger, where she was dried, fed, and laid to rest in front of Madame Bon Bon's fireplace. Madame Bon Bon herself was not all too thrilled to have a surprise wild animal in her inn, but out of the goodness of her heart, she allowed the puppy to stay the night. Besides, she took two orphaned boys in the form of Zephry and Morchesso under her wing after their mothers died, so how was this much different?
It was a massive risk for her to let her guard down for this one man, but it ultimately paid off, as she gained a warm home and a caring friend. Zephry would go on to name her Djalla, after his favorite poet from Woxardam's age of antiquity.
In the times that followed, Zephry would continue to comfort Djalla the same way he did the night he found her - with a song that comforted him in times gone by. And just like her new owner before her, the song was one she very quickly grew to love, as not only did Zephry have a gentle and reassuring voice, but it was always constant. There was comfort in repetition.
Now here they were, sharing the same song and dance as they always have. She panted in excitement as she carefully stepped around on her hind paws, seemingly in rhythm to the gentle swaying of her owner’s footsteps.
“You dance divinely as always, my lady.” Zephry said with a smile. “You never miss a step. The other ladies of Woxardam could learn a thing or two from you.” Djalla happily barked in reply.
"Alright then, here we go," Zephry said with a chuckle, "second verse, same as the first."
But before he could even open his mouth to sing the next note, he was interrupted by five loud chimes from the nearby grandfather clock.
“Oh, by hell,” Zephry muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Five o' clock already. Time for me to get back to work."
He took Djalla's front left paw into his calloused fingers and tenderly kissed it. "Thank you for allowing me this dance, my lady. It was very fun."
He then turned to head back to his work desk, but before he could sit himself down, he was greeted by a pair of paws and pleading eyes off to the side.
"Now girl, I told you, I need to work now. These plans for an illusionary analytical engine are due at the end of the week. If I don't get them done by then, my client will have my head."
Djalla only whined louder. She nudged his hand with her snout, pointing her gaze back and forth between Zephry and a certain door across the room.
Zephry craned his head behind where he sat and saw where she was pointing him to - the front door. Djalla wanted outside. He sighed. “Great,” he thought. “I’m never going to get this done, am I?”
He folded his arms as he stared down at the unfinished blueprints. He had to get this done. But for one reason or another, he just... did not feel like it. As much as he wanted to make further progress, his mind was just not in it at the moment.
He peered back down at Djalla, who was now crouched flat on the floor, tail wagging and eyes imploring. He then looked back at the clock. It was only a few minutes past five. A little fresh air to clear the head never hurt anyone.
A pause.
He sighed again and put his quill pen down. Perhaps this project can wait a little longer.
“Oh, alright. I’ll take you out for a quick stroll. But after that, I really must get back to work. Understand?”
Djalla's face brightened instantly as she sprang up to his height once more, barking and pressing her front paws on her owner’s chest in gratitude.
"Alright, alright, settle down now, you silly girl," Zephry chuckled, ruffling her head. "I'm on it."
He strode to the door and opened it, revealing Woxardam in all of its drowsy majesty, alive only with the sights of windows warmly lit by gas lamps and the sounds of a whistling lamplighter strolling down the street and a distant lone street carriage making its last round for the day. Djalla’s eyes lit up the second she felt the first hint of the cool evening air hit her face.
Zephry then made his way to the side of the door, motioning her forward with a bow and a graceful wave of his hand.
“After you, my lady.”
With an anticipatory play-bow, Djalla happily bounded outside, and her lifelong friend followed swiftly after.

My first sad lil’ attempt at mapmaking! :’) I did it on my whiteboard, so no judgments, plz. 🙏 It’s a really rough draft of Sverenne - or at least the most notable parts - and I kind of mixed the ancient eras with the 19th century so the borders and names are not quite as...contemporary.
To give you some context, Morchesso came from Myr (the west), Zephry’s family immigrated from Yischt (the east), Izammar came from the The Ottoneshan Empire (the south), Wintrem’s family would have been descended from migrants of Accode (south east), Powla might have been descended from the Funginites (super west), Evelyn’s family would have come from the southeastern parts of Druwol.
If we’re talking about several millennia before, Achtbenatu’s people were the Jad’Jahan of the island of Accode. And Levehethen’s people were the Alluneshans who were forced to immigrate down to where the Ottoneshan Empire is today.
I will make a better map in the future.
