Imagining what would happen of Bang and Saitama told their "disciples" to go hang out with people their own age...
(Aka MB babysits two boys older than himself)
Guess what they are playing :)
Z: Onii-chan, I thought you were good at this game!
MB: I am! It's Garou's fault we keep losing!
Genos: Yes. Even Saitama sensei is able to beat the CPU. Garou is terrible.
G: Shut the fuck up! It's not fair we have to play against that robot.
MB: I *told* you to pick Kirby
G: That's gay!
MB: Oh my fucking God Garou.
Z: You can't say that! *And DON'T cuss at Onii-chan!*
T: Y-yeah... it's ok Oji-san... it's just a game...
Genos: Yes Garou. Grow up.
G: Whatever! I can still kick yer ass!
Tama: *eating garou's hair*

Both Saitama and Garou had someone they were clinging to. Someone who kept them from falling apart. When Saitama lost Genos, he lost everything. He stopped caring, even blowing up Jupiters moon. When Garou loses Tareo, he is ready to give up everything just to have him back. Both of them cling to their person.

I think one of the many reasons I love the cabin fight is because of Garou's refusal to surrender or run away. like beyond the fact it would mean defeat or death for him- him consciously making the choice to throw himself in danger hits so hard because he is being ganged up on, so succumbing/surrendering to the mob trying to keep him down would go against EVERYTHING he is fighting for in his mind. There's simply no other choice for him to make in his mind, even as he is on the verge of death :')
And not just that, but he knew he couldn't just run away, because Tareo would've been involved or injured in the crossfire! :O (it would've been death for him too!) He fought to keep Tareo as uninvolved from the skirmish as possible, but in the most pivotal moment (even telling the truth as his last resort was no good; the heroes would never believe a 'monster' like him), Garou had no other choice but to stand his ground as a human shield (he Could Not dodge), otherwise Tareo would've been gunned down behind him! (a completely unjust outcome for an innocent child! to be killed by heroes as collateral!) And THAT, oh no, that injustice fuels him on a primal (heroic) level to consciously throw himself into the literal line of fire (repeatedly), facing down death itself while not even knowing if he could survive it....so the fact he could conquer symbolic visions of death with his own brand of justice prevailing made the entire sequence brilliant to me. :'D

Grown ass men could attempt murder on Garou and he'd laugh in their faces, but if Tareo ever called him a meanie he would break down crying.

2022 Best Boy
Who else could it be but the bravest boy in the world, Tareo?
His growth over the arc was so nice. The way he started out:

Just look at him now. Brave *and* good-natured!

His importance for the story can't be overstated, either. If Genos's death condemned the world to destruction, then Tareo's literally saved it. It's his heartfelt plea to Saitama to stop, but not kill, Garou that meant that no matter how angry Saitama was, he couldn't go through with killing Garou off... even though he wanted to.
Between that act of grace and his strong bond with the kid, Garou finally saw the light and the way to try to set things right. Without Tareo, Garou would never have found understanding and empathy for Saitama, and would never have done the right thing. Come to that, it's no exaggeration that without Tareo, there'd probably not have been a human Garou to save from the monster creeping over him.
Garou pulled so much strength out of himself coming through to save Tareo. When Tareo did the same for Garou, ah, now that was moving. In the end, we see the two of them together and you can truly ask, 'who saved who?'
