Anyway, Eggplant is “how are they used by others and how easily are they tricked into that?” Changing the question slightly based on the direction my thoughts went got me: “What is their Purpose where other people are concerned, in actuality, in their own minds, or both? And how do they feel about that?” I tried to do this for everybody but some of them refused to articulate their answer, so if there’s someone specific you wanted to see who’s not listed, please specify and I will go back to shouting OPEN UP at them.

Without further ado…

Aris: Her Purpose is her Brains. People want her for her smarts. Her ability to think up solutions to the problem of the day, build the latest and greatest technical solution, run diagnostics, remember and recite all relevant intel. This is true, to some extent, but in Aris’ own mind, that’s all she brings to the table. It’s formidable, to be sure, but leaves one lacking a lot of other things when seeking connections/relationships. She might be a little sad about this…if she hadn’t reached this conclusion just before the age of ten. She’s resigned; this is simply the Way Things Are.

J: She has something of a two-fold Purpose, depending on whose perspective we’re working from. The primary Purpose she was taught relates back to her position in the family royal line: she is nothing more and nothing less than a Vessel for whatever her people want her to be, trusting that she will do whatever is necessary to secure their best interests. Don’t look too closely at this, it’s load-bearing. The Purpose with which J is actually most comfortable/ where she sees herself as able to both do good and perform well is as a Social Connector! If life is all about who you know, well, J knows everybody (who’s who on any political or social scene, names and dates and contacts and how they all link back to each other eventually. All the better to be directed towards important causes and get things done!) If there’s two people who really need to get in touch to further their good work? J’s there as their middleman to arrange a meeting and smooth all the introductions into place.

Rissa: She can be a lot of things, depending on whose “hands she is in” at any given time. That is to say, Rissa tends to orient herself and her Purpose to an external force (a cause, an ideal, a place, another person) and then becomes a fine-tuned instrument towards ensuring the fulfillment of whatever the goal may be. In cases with another person, she will become (or try very very hard to become) their right hand, their rock, their most reliable load-bearing wall, their fixer, and their enforcer for whatever needs doing. You can see where she can lose her way if the hand guiding her isn’t careful and doesn’t actually have her best interests in mind, but those who do care for her know that Rissa absolutely thrives when she feels useful and needed and find ways to satisfy that need with her customary Acts of Service and Loyalty. If asked to define an independent Purpose, she would probably say something along the lines of bringing Justice, Karma, Balancing the Scales, etc. This aligns closely with both her spiritual practice (devoted follower of the god of such concepts) and helps her to deal with any misgivings she has about being viewed as the one who will put morals to the side and get the dirty work done when required (ends justify the means.)

Tavi: Like Rissa, Tavi is very externally-focused in her Purpose; hers revolving around the people most important to her. Her Purpose is, in short, to be the Protector of her loved ones. Sometimes, this means being a physical “tank” in a fight (a position in which she is by no means uncomfortable.) Sometimes it means using her wings to fly someone away from trouble as quickly as possible. Sometimes it means shouting down harsh words and reminding her person just how wonderful they are and just how highly she regards them. Sometimes, it means being the clown just to put a smile on their face (who cares if it’s at her own expense? Right?) The problem with this becomes any situation in which Tavi cannot Protect…she kind of stalls out and loses momentum. She doesn’t know what to do, and will lash out if pushed too hard.

F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)

he’s a multiple-positions guy. not afraid to just move you around as he pleases (and he’s definitely strong enough to). but his favorite… hm. if it’s a loving, intimate moment, then missionary, or sitting up with you in his lap. if it’s just sex for sex’s sake, then he likes having you bent over the edge of the bed, or doggy.

G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)

he’s a sarcastic humor kinda guy, so this turns into him making teasing jokes sometimes if the mood is right or if he’s feeling devious.

H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)

he does some maintenance on the regular, but not a whole lot, unless you ask him to.

I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)

the guy’s got range. this can either be the most tender, romantic lovemaking of your life or a rough and thorough fucking. either way he’s making sure that you’re okay, that you’re comfortable and not in any pain (unless that’s what you want 🤷🏻‍♀️) and giving you A+ aftercare.

J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)

he definitely prefers joint activities, but he’ll handle things himself if he has to. usually in the shower, one hand braced on the wall in front of him, imagining the other is yours instead.

K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)

(I know I said this earlier, but do they have toys in their universe?) anyway, he might introduce some rope or restraints every now and then, but he prefers to hold you down himself anyway. and you love feeling how strong he is, so it’s a win-win.

U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)

he can be a major tease (see above discussion of edging) but he’ll always give you what you want — eventually.

V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)

cannot shut up, constantly giving you praise and telling you how fucking good you feel, how pretty you are… mixed with a lot of swearing and panting. yeah. thank the gods for sound shields, because you’ll need one every time.

W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)

he’s in charge ~95% of the time, but you take control every once in a while, and he loves it. playing into that strength-difference kink I mentioned earlier; he knows he has the ability to take that control back, but he won’t, not when you’re on top of him “holding him down”, not when it feels so fucking good to turn his brain off and just relax for a while as you take care of him.

he’s big, he’s tall, ergo he’s hung. once again, I do not make the rules.

he has a handful of scars from his years of training — and some from doing stupid shit with Xaden as kids, but he won’t admit that, lest it undermine his tough-guy image.

Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)

pretty high, but he’s good at reading the room, and will only proposition you when he believes you’ll say yes — if you’re sick, tired, injured, upset, etc., he’ll put that need aside and focus on caring for you.

Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)

pretty quickly, after cleanup, I-love-you's, and that mandatory cuddle time I mentioned earlier. you can’t fuck in the morning or the middle of the day anymore unless you have no plans for the next two-to-four hours, because it’s an automatic routine for both of you now — fuck, aftercare, cuddles, sleep.

that's it. I shouldn't have written this at 10am, because now this is all I'll be thinking about all day. oh well. there are certainly worse things to have on your mind...

Pictured above: the Amerigo Vespucci, a three-masted tall ship, encounters two US aircraft carriers: the Independence (black and white image, 1962) and the George H.W. Bush (color image, 2022).

Built in 1930 for the purpose of sail training, the Italian Training Ship Amerigo Vespucci is designed after 18th century 74-cannon "ships of the line”, naval warships common to the Age of Sail. She carries a standard crew of 16 officers, 70 noncoms, and 190 sailors; she has an overall length of 101m/331ft and a maximum width of 15.5m/51ft with a steel hull and a top speed of 10 knots (19km/h). The masts are steel but carry traditional canvas sails and use only hemp rope; mooring lines are synthetic per port regulations. Currently she carries both diesel and electric engines. More details and specifications at Wikipedia. Her sister ship, the Cristoforo Colombo, was given to the USSR as war reparations after WWII.

There is a commonly-repeated story that when the Amerigo Vespucci encountered the USS Independence in 1962, the Independence signaled the Amerigo Vespucci to ask, “Who are you?”

The ship replied, “Training ship Amerigo Vespucci, Italian Navy.”

The Independence then is reported to have responded:

“You are the most beautiful ship in the world.”

Well, they weren’t lying about that.

Wikipedia’s only truly useful citation for this encounter is a YouTube video of the USS George H.W. Bush meeting the Amerigo Vespucci in 2022.

This encounter was also documented in a US Navy press release from September 2022, which has better information for the initial exchange. The 1962 photo leaves no doubt the Independence and the Amerigo Vespucci did encounter one another, but the exchange of communications does not have strong visible documentation. The press release states that the NHHC website has a record of the encounter, but does not link to it.

The NHHC website, which is a massive pain in the ass to use, has a records page for the black and white photo above, but that appears to be the extent of its documentation. Presumably there’s a logbook for the Independence or the Amerigo Vespucci or both, but that’s beyond my ability to locate. I have not been able to find a record that isn’t embedded in 21st-century documents which don’t have strong citations. There is no record of who on the Independence felt the need to compliment the Amerigo Vespucci, or how the ship responded. The Italian Navy’s history of the Amerigo Vespucci, now available only through Archive.org, does not mention the encounter.

The earliest record I could find of the Amerigo Vespucci referenced as “The most beautiful ship in the world” comes from a post at VisitVenezia, which Google believes was posted in 2004 (there’s no date on the post itself). The earliest reference to the actual meeting of the two ships is a vague reference in a blog from 2012, which merely states that “another ship once radioed, you are the most beautiful ship in the world.” There is no citation for the story’s origin at that post. If the exchange did happen, the story of it appears to have surfaced to civilians only in the 21st century. Most other records 2012-2022 eventually trace back to Tumblr, actually.

The USS Independence’s Crew Book for 1962 has been digitized; reading through it there is, as they say, a lot to unpack, but despite numerous pages dedicated to the sights of the Mediterranean, there is no mention or photo of the Amerigo Vespucci that I could find. It does list the two commanders of the Independence, Melvin R. Etheridge and Bob J. Robison, as well as the full 1962 crew. And if you like men in uniform, 60s military technology, or poorly printed photos of Europe in 1962, it’s a fun way to spend an hour or so.

In any case, the Navy says it happened, and it’s a great story. We do have documentation, both in the video above and in the September 2022 press release, of the 2022 encounter. The USS George H.W. Bush, captained by Capt. David-Tavis Pollard, asks via radio, “Sailing vessel on my starboard side, please identify yourself.”

The ship responds, “This is Italian Navy ship Amerigo Vespucci.”

The US ship asks, “Are you the one that sailed by the USS Independence in 1962?”

To which the Italians reply, “Yes we are. We are the senior national vessel in active duty.”

The US ship responds, “Amerigo Vespucci, you are still after 60 years the most beautiful ship in the world.”

To which the Amerigo Vespucci answers, “George Bush, we are flattered and express fair winds and following seas for your deployment.”

I’d love to know who sent the original messages, and where it might have been recorded; if folks have access to documentation or know sailors who served on the Independence or the Amerigo Vespucci in 1962 who might remember it, please feel free to let me know. After all, I’d like the story to be true.

And she is, then and now, a beautiful ship.

J. Smith Cameron on Gerri’s relationship with her daughters (and a little look into the collaborative process between Jesse and the actors).

“I ventured to Jesse one time and I was like ‘I wonder if maybe she has two grown daughters. Gerri has two daughters. We don’t need to know about them but in her backstory she’s got two daughters. And it’s not like they have an estranged relationship exactly but they’re a little scared of her. Like they’re respectful, they value her opinion, they have her on a pedestal but she’s not a cozy up to mom.’ And Jesse was like ‘Huh, that’s interesting I’ve always – now that you mention it I always imagined her childless. I don’t know, let’s just stick a pin it and let’s not commit to it.’

Then much later when we were doing the senate hearing, at one point I had to improvise some of my answers. So I did some improvs and at one point the democrat senator asked Gerri, ‘Do you have any children?’ and I said ‘Oh I have two daughters.’ It just came out of my mouth. . . . I remember Jesse coming up after they said ‘Cut’ and laughing and saying ‘Oh you got your daughters in there!’”

♙ ⸻ · 。… [ kristine froseth + twenty eight + cis woman + she / her ] the city of new york welcomes octavia gold to the social season of 1887. known to be affable and erudite, their rumored secretive and facetious tendencies might prove to be their unmaking. the street musicians often string along a tune that sounds like murder on the dancefloor by sophie ellis-bextor whenever they are near, hoping for a coin or two as a reward. unbeknown to their peers, octavia views the social season as an unnecessary and excessive show of wealth and grandeur - one that she can’t help but be drawn to but when holding a secret such as mountains of family debt, it would be best to keep their opinions to themselves.

a history :

octavia grew up practically dirt poor, the first of many children born to an innkeeper and former lady's maid. like many members of the working class, she's been working in one form or another ever since she could walk and hadn't seen an idle day in more than two decades — before she came to new york, that is.

her mother died unexpectedly giving birth to her youngest sibling when she was 14 which all but forced her to grow up and run the house all by herself, considering her father was practically never around. it was something that she did beautifully, despite being under a lot of stress.

a few months shy of her eighteenth birthday, octavia leveraged her mother's connections to get herself a job at the country estate of a j. it was this very job that allowed the nystrøm family to have some sort of financial security for the first time in years. a certain level of instability still remained, however, as mr. nystrøm saw it fit to use the earnings she sent back home to fund his own ventures whenever he felt like it.

being close in age to the jeweller's daughter, it was only natural that the two struck up a friendship despite the disapproval and scrutiny of both the lady of the manor and various other members of staff. the friendship evolved into a romantic relationship in their early twenties, something that was kept strictly under wraps.

nobody knows what happened for certain. maybe they'd gotten too comfortable , careless enough to get found out by another maid , but news of the relationship eventually got back to the lady of the manor regardless. it was no surprise then that octavia was swiftly relieved of all her duties, her lover married off to someone of her own class and calibre in a pompous wedding a few weeks later.

octavia made her way back home only to discover that not only had her father spent her meager pittance on yet another fruitless endeavour, he had taken out loans that he needed to repay regardless of whether the business succeeded or not. it was this desperate need for money that led her to the eldest miss gold, and eventually to new york.

the secret :

as the eldest child, octavia has always borne the brunt of her father's ill-fated financial decisions — the latest being a hat-making business that failed spectacularly almost immediately. his little stunt left the nystrøm family in financial ruin & in desperate need of money to pay off his various debts. it was this very desperation that led her straight back to the eldest miss gold, despite previously rebuffing her.

thoughts on high society :

octavia is familiar with the ins and outs of high society. not as an active participant, no, but as an observer. as one of the many faceless household staff working tirelessly to make sure that the season's events went off without a hitch. she thinks it's all unecessary at best, and downright cruel at worst — the rich enjoying extravagant parties whilst the poor struggle to put food on the table. still, she'd be lying if she said she doesn't romanticise the idea of it to a certain extent.
