And the delicate elegance of the motif had stayed with her long after the festival had passed. The doctor had already commissioned Shenhe's birthday present: an Inazuma-style hairpin of a five-petaled white flower in a black base with red accents, and when she traveled back to her homeland to pick it up, she couldn't help picking a few dendrobiums as well, using her vision to preserve their freshness until she'd made her way back to Liyue. Having asked beforehand if the quasi-Adeptus had a moment to spare and meet her on her birthday, Alice found herself a little nervous while waiting at the spot they'd decided on, mostly due to the bouquet of qingxins accented by dendrobiums in her hands that caught the eyes of many she'd walked past. And when the guest of honor arrived wearing that same, gorgeous dress, Alice found herself slightly tongue-tied. "M-Miss Shenhe!" She smiled despite the rise of color along her cheeks and offered her the flowers first. "Happy birthday!"

Her birthdays used to be a lonely, solemn thing. She remembers being happy, overjoyed even, to see her parents smile at her and wish her well. It was a vivid memory she wished would fade into the darkness that surrounded it. In the years following, Cloud Retainer would invite her and the other adepti for a feast amongst friends. It had taken Shenhe a few years to accept that these gatherings were meant to honor the day of her birth. Now, as she got more accustomed to Liyue Harbor's traditions, she learned to entertain certain expectations as her birthday came around once again.

Chef Mao had been understanding with her request for time off, especially since Xiangling and Guoba had returned from their trip just in time to assist the staff during her absence. Yet, her nephew had been a bit too stubborn to invite her to their clan's gathering this year, likely because she had made the harbor her home. It would be quite awkward if she outright refused again. Reluctantly, she accepted—after imposing a few conditions, to which Chongyun was glad to agree with.

First, they would need to respect the plans she had already made.

On the stone bridge that marked one entrance into the harbor, she found her friend holding a bouquet. The familiar pale petals of Qingxins served as a blank canvas for the beautiful crimson blooms that accompanied it. A small smile gently curved Shenhe's lips as her hands, bound by the thin red rope against her palms, adjusted their grip on the handle of her own gift. "Thank you, Miss Alice."

Now that she understood Alice's penchant for gifts, Shenhe had prepared what was quoted as her "specialty" in exchange. The Dragon Beard Noodles were carefully encased in a box meant to keep warm, the box kept steady on a wooden stand until the delivery made it to its destination. (No one had to know the disaster she wrought while attempting several other recipes). "I've come to realize that I could appreciate my birthday, so long as I can ensure your happiness today, as well."

Though she had much to make up for Alice's overwhelming generosity. Once the gifts were exchanged, she lifted a hand to make sure the pin in her hair was still in place, noting Alice's attention to her different attire. "I was told that I should only wear this on 'special' occasions," she said, with a slight furrow of her brow. They certainly would have told her it was acceptable to wear the outfit on this specific day, yet the date of her birth still held little meaning to her. "I think welcoming a cherished friend back home falls under that criteria."

JK Rowling is just really kind of stupid.

Like, this isn't purely sheer-minded bitterness or pettiness.

She gadflies to high-class ninnies every time they give her a crumb of attention like goddamn Wormtongue, throwing away every ideal she once professed she had because some two-bit duchess who noticed a middle-class woman had money and second wave feminism snapped her fingers.

Her books have so many bizarre little mistakes the closer you look, with a very similar pattern of actions that once you see it kills a lot of the dramatic tension. She can put in the effort to name characters after hidden Arthurian meanings or parallel constellations but her best effort for Asian girls are 'Cho Chang' and 'Pavarti and Padma Patel'. She built out a world map where there's nine wizard schools in her entire world with Europe getting four and every other school being the only one in an entire continent.

She thinks people who bring up her house that's listed by address on Wikipedia are stalking her because they know the address of the house. That's on wikipedia. Where anyone can see it, because it's a cultural touchstone.

She seems to be terrified of bathrooms, like over two book series she's had a running motif of bad things happening to women in bathrooms and a big push of her transphobia is trying to bar anyone without a vagina from entering a public bathroom she might use, like her entire 'Wizards dump themselves and magic it away' might just be that phobia coming into a play? Like how Stephen King wrote Misery after being stalked but way more ridiculous and mind-boggling petty because she's just too dumb to actually empathize with someone who's not a rich white British lady with nothing better to do than use the internet.

Also, have you seen her attempts to argue about her transphobia and hateful shit? "doesn't matter, I have money", okay cool, you're a goddamn author and your best way with words is waving dollar bills around??? Even Hideki Kamiya can throw out a parting shot, and he's working with a language barrier and arguing about dumb gamer shit.

Good god. This woman is stupid. Mean and dumb as hell, and actively refuses to improve in these times of google and wikipedia and having enough money to hire ten separate researchers at any given point.
