VVVVVV is an amazing platformer game I highly recommend. I played myself, and it’s awesome. In stead of jumping, you flip gravity, which makes for very interesting levels. Go try it! https://store.steampowered.com/app/70300/VVVVVV/

VVVVVV is a nice gift
Tigre got me an interesting game I had on my Steam wishlist. “VVVVVV”: I was shocked to see the lad buy me this game out-of-the-blue, given I never brought it up in any form, as it was a game I added to my Steam wishlist and forgot about it. It is a game I watched a few years ago that was done by HyperSonic7701 or one of the big-name YouTubers. But a game where you never jump but flip gravity to…

145. VVVVVV (Steam, Switch, macOS, Linux, 3DS, Vita, PS4, iOS, Android, Commodore 64, Ouya, Pandora)
this was another game I tried out of curiosity, since I had heard of it and seen a bit of gameplay, but had just never gotten around to checking it out until now. and as expected, I had a pretty good time! it’s short and simple enough to understand, and the music is fantastic. some of the puzzles were pretty interesting, and a few served to be more difficult than others, but I was never really put at a huge roadblock for longer than 20 minutes. if I have any complaints it’s that the game kind of strained my eyes after playing the whole thing in one sitting.
overall I’d definitely suggest people check vvvvvv out if they like puzzle platformers, or just want a short indie game to check out. there may not be a whole lot of content to the game, but what’s here is quite enjoyable.

I feel like, theoretically, Dicey Dungeons Jester is the ideal character for a website like Tumblr. Like, a canon nonbinary character who is also human and a POC? Actual representation? and they're also a fucking jester, like this website is so obsessed with? And they're actually a main character, arguably one of the most well-developed characters in a game that's otherwise really short on story?
like. There would've been a good chance of them becoming the website's first proper resident sexythem if this game was more popular. just a thought.

Stumbled over an old freeware curation website from 2012 completely accidentally, It's called FreeIndieGames.es!
Tumblr media
It's full of games made around 2012-1014, curated with the intent of showcasing games that seemed to be overlooked. From one of the editors of the site, Terry Cavanagh:
"When I started this site after GDC in 2012, it was out of frustration – I believed that the culture and discussion around indie games was changing, and that the awesome, personal, and usually free work that had influenced me was being left out and forgotten. I wanted to change that, and I think, thanks to the help of my wonderful co-curators, we did that, for a while."
The website had it's last post in April 2014, due to the editors moving to new things and having their own personal lives, however the website and it's archives of games are still up!
And it seems like the care for more independent free indie games is still up too, as Terry still doing showcases of freeware, just in a different website now: Terry's Free Game of the Week!
Definitely a great recommendation for people who are looking for freeware and more personal indie games! (And if that's not enough, in the about page there's even more links to indie games sites and curation threads!)

The Vines
Script: Nele Washbourne
The Vines is named after Albert B. Vines, who first opened a public house on this site in 1867. It was rebuilt in 1907 as a Cains pub and is, like its sister pub, the Philharmonic, one of the great show pubs of the country.  It is a grade two listed pub on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors, it is also known as the legendary ‘Big House’ on Lime Street.
The Vines was the work of Liverpool architect, Walter Thomas for the brewer, Robert Cain. Thomas (1849-1912) is famously known for his public house designs, Sefton Park and Audley House which is now an English heritage site.
This exuberantly baroque pub has etched glass windows, a folly tower, and extravagant faux Dutch gables. The impressive clock that extends over Lime Street (which is claimed to be the biggest free-standing in Great Britain) is by E J Dent & Co., the same company that provided the clock tower at the Houses of Parliament.
The interior of the pub is divided into rooms but features monumental fireplaces, carved mahogany, and beaten copper detail. It also boasts Corinthian pilasters and columns throughout. At the rear is the huge, ornate, high-ceilinged Billiards room, which was a staple of the 19th-century pub scene. The room is dominated by a striking stained glass oval ceiling dome.
In the Queensbury Room, above the fireplace is an intricate wooden bas-relief Viking Longboat. Around the walls there are fifteen plaster panels of cherubs engaged in allegorical pursuits and upon the ceiling is an oval plaster relief including 12 zodiac designs all created by Liverpool based artist Henry Gustave Hiller.
German Art historian Nikolaus Pevsner attributes the plaster reliefs to The Bromsgrove Guild, a 19th-century company associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement that was heavily involved in the plaster designs throughout. The Vines was once owned by A. B. Walker in the late 19th Century, who was later to pay for The Walker Art Gallery. At one time, it boasted its own art collection, which is still reflected in the ‘billiards room.' The room hung paintings worth millions but was relocated to the Walker Gallery and replaced by oil paintings of lesser value. Bill Bryson, a famous US travel writer, eulogised about the Vines in his famous book 'Notes From a Small Island’.
Today, the pub is often full of Liverpool characters and is a constant staple due to its historical conversation and atmosphere.

VVVVVV
VVVVVV is a platformer puzzle game developed by Terry Cavanagh where theplayer has the ability to switch the gravity of the player allowing the character to complete the level.
Tumblr media
This game is really simple, from the character design to level design. What I think has made this game so popular is the mechanics. From the gravity switching mechanic to changing position in level by going off the screen. I really like this idea

Super Hexagon Turns 10
Tumblr media
Game designer Terry Cavanagh via this blog post:
So, hey! Today is the 10th anniversary of Super Hexagon’s original release. I know, I can barely believe it either. I don’t have any big plans today, sorry – but I wanted to mark the occasion here. <3
I still don’t really know how to think about Super Hexagon, sometimes. It was a game that just sort of came along, while I was working on something else, a game I very much made for myself, tuned to my own reflexes. I didn’t expect any kind of reaction to it, let alone the one it got. I would never have imagined that anyone would still be playing it 10 years on. I’m unbelievably proud of this thing.
I consider Super Hexagon to be one of my more formative game experiences, and without it I'm not sure I'd be writing blog posts like this or hosting podcast episodes about video games on a weekly basis. Even back in 2012 I remember its aesthetic directly changing my relationship with games and the kinds of works I wanted to create. Chipzel's unreal soundtrack inspired a track of my own as I started to experiment with creating chiptune music. Visually, the bold and geometric art style influenced my own design sensibilities. Even my brief foray into working on smaller indie game projects was in some ways brought about by the simple fact that I couldn't put Super Hexagon down, and I dreamed of creating something that would make others feel the same way.
In retrospect I can identify an eventual fan of FromSoftware's particular brand of masochistic game design through the lens of my score-chase-driven obsession with proving I can master a video game that uses a majority of its sparse copywriting to telegraph its own insurmountable difficulty. To this day I have a shockingly vivid memory¹ of finally surviving a run for one endless minute in the blistering "Hexagonest" difficulty level after weeks of attempts, a feat I just tried and failed to replicate while writing this.
And it’s a miracle I can try to beat "Hexagonest" at all in 2022 given the ways in which Apple has slowly eradicated the App Store's own legacy through forced deprecation and obsolescence over the years. That Terry consistently updates the game and ensures we as its players can continue to go cross-eyed in the pursuit of a seemingly impossible high score is a blessing, and one unfortunately not shared by many of the other apps I loved from that era.
So here's to you Super Hexagon. Happy tenth birthday.
Thank you for everything.
---
¹ I was waiting for a friend to return from the bathroom at a pub in our hometown, it was the middle of the afternoon and I had the day off from working at the movie theater where I spent most of my time. Because I spent most of my time there working doubles to chip away at my student loans, it also meant that's where I spent most of my time playing Super Hexagon. Waiting in the wings of the theater between showings for the last patrons to finish watching the credits (there's always at least one person who does this in every screening of every movie, no exceptions), I'd turn my phone's brightness all the way down and try my best to hit sixty seconds in Hexagonest. So imagine my surprise when it was in the brief moment a friend stepped away to use the john that I finally found victory, in between bites of burgers and musing about our futures.

The Western Golf Association (WGA) hosted its 11th annual Green Coat Gala on Friday, Nov. 4, raising a record $1 million to help send deserving caddies to college through the Evans Scholars Foundation (ESF).
More than 300 supporters attended the black-tie affair at The Peninsula Chicago and virtually via livestream. All proceeds support the Evans Scholarship, a prestigious full housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies.
The evening featured special guest Butch Harmon – former golf coach of Tiger Woods, current coach of many of the top touring professionals and the game’s most sought-after instructor.
“When I was asked to come do this, it was an honor for me. I get to speak at a lot of things, but nothing touched me like tonight has touched me. I get a little emotional here,” said Harmon. “What the Evans Scholarship has done for young people is phenomenal. Tonight was a perfect example.”
Veteran NBC and Golf Channel analyst Mark Rolfing emceed the event and held a fireside chat with Harmon, where they touched on the current landscape of professional golf and stories from Harmon’s days of coaching golf’s greats.
Guests also heard from featured Evans Scholar Jon Paul, a junior studying mechanical engineering at Michigan State University. Paul caddied at Country Club of Detroit in Michigan. He shared the story of his journey to America, and how the Evans Scholarship has changed his family’s life.
“Where I grew up, in a mountain village in Haiti, my house had two bedrooms and we slept on a blanket on the floor. Besides love, my parents made sure our education was a priority – even over eating,” said Paul. “Caddying and the Evans Scholarship gave me the opportunity to realize my dreams. Because of your generosity, I have been able to dream much bigger than I ever thought possible.”
Currently, a record 1,100 Evans Scholars are enrolled at 22 universities across the country, and more than 11,800 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr.
“The need to receive a college education has never been greater,” said WGA Chairman Joe Desch. “Thanks to our generous supporters, the record-breaking success of this year’s event will more provide life-changing experiences for young caddies, like Jon, nationwide.”
The 2022 Green Coat Gala event co-chairs were Tim and Stacey Cavanagh, Mike and Sharyl Mackey, Terry and Eileen McCann, and Mick and Karen O’Rourke.

If you want to hear more, check out the digital music section of for lots of original work, including the full version of Krakbound. The tracks we’re featuring on the show include one of his original compositions, “Krakbound,” and “Popular potpourri,” a VVVVVV medley. PPPPPP, the soundtrack of the video game VVVVVV Pppppp, a book of selected works by Kurt Schwitters, translated by Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris pppppp. Beyond game music, he’s composed a number of catchy, original pieces, including a recent track for the Songs for the Cure charity album, Remedy. They perfectly suited a retro-styled game like VVVVVV, and to call the soundtrack “background music” would be unfair-SoulEye’s tracks immersed me within VVVVVV’s world as much as the gameplay itself. If you haven’t played VVVVVV aren’t familiar with his work, his songs bring to mind the infectious melodies and low-fi simplicity of classic games like Mega Man, Legacy of the Wizard, and M.U.L.E. That’s right: New intro music! I’m proud to announce that Video Game Hangover now opens and closes with the addictive chiptunes of Magnus “SoulEye” Pålsson, who you might recognize as the composer for Terry Cavanagh’s perilous VVVVVV! If you’ve had a chance to listen to Episode 6, you may have noticed there’s something different about it.
