In Ultra Galaxy Fight: the Destined Crossroad, there’s a strange tagline: ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH?

Which begs the question: what does this mean? Who’s it talking to? Tough enough to do what? What does this have to do with a Crossroad, Destined or otherwise?

The obvious, easiest translation seems to be: are you, the viewer, tough enough? The implication being, I assume, to ask if we’re strong enough to stand with the Ultras against the Absolutians, fighting for the Land of Light.

But that seems incomplete; if that was the intent, I feel like there’d be something more specific they’re asking the viewers to do, a specific call to action (eg SUBSCRIBE TO FIGHT THE ABSOLUTIANS or VISIT OUR WEBSITE AND DO THIS THING TO ETC ETC). There’s the Narak Tower game but since they don’t tie that in as strongly in mainstream advertising, I don’t think that’s the intended meaning of the tagline.

I also assume it’s not saying “are you, the viewer, tough enough to sit through a movie-length series of ideas that Klenda will eventually do an overly long thoughts-thread about.” So I think it’s safe to assume it means someone within the story.

Because of the UGF format, there’s no one true “main character,” or even a main cast. It’s “everyone is here Except Agul” which means it’s hard to tell what characters are considered central. But let’s go over the possibilities. Who in The Destined Crossroad needs to be Tough Enough?

Grigio is the first character we meet who can be called a main-character. And like…in a sense she needs to be tough? They start a really interesting direction with her and Gina, and Grigio deciding throughout that she wants to be stronger—hence, “tougher.” Even Mebius mentions that her strength and powers could be the key to ending the Absolutian threat.

So is it talking to Grigio? I’m inclined to say no; Grigio starts that arc of growth and strength, yes, but we never really see her go anywhere with it. Her last scene ends with her saying “I need to get stronger!” And then we just. Never see her again. She vanishes an hour into the movie, and never again becomes relevant to the story.

So not Grigio. Maybe Zero?

He seems like a likely candidate; his arc in this is about getting back to his roots—on multiple levels. He circles back to his origins as a character and in his legacy, both as a leader and a student, and he has to use that in a new, tough way.

So does Zero need to be Tough Enough?

There’s a better argument for him than Grigio, but I’d argue no. His power and new ability is relevant to the finale in a way Grigio’s isn’t (read: he’s THERE AT ALL, thanks Tsuburaya), but is it Zero’s story? I don’t think he’s the one the story’s truly about. And I don’t think he’s the one the tagline applies to the most.

Ribut’s another main(ish) character, but he doesn’t do enough for me to really think it’s asking him to be tough. That and it feels contrary to his role in the story, as his “toughness” is in his stubborn belief in his friends and his faith in his ideals.

The only other likely candidate seems to be Regulos, the new kid on the block. The story establishes him as incredibly powerful, and master of THE strongest space-martial-art that we know of in the Ultra universe. Not to mention he has a personal grudge against the Absolutians, so it seems like it’s him who needs to be Tough Enough.

I’d like to posit that none of these people are the one the question is addressed to. Because it isn’t their story. They’re all part of that story, yes, but they’re not the reason the story’s happening.

None of the Ultras are so consistently pushing the story forward, so constantly active rather than reactive, so desperate to achieve their ends that they’ll burn down worlds to get it.

No one in The Destined Crossroad needs to be tougher than Absolute Tartarus.

Tartarus is, in the technical sense of the word, the protagonist of UGF3. He’s the one moving the story forward, connecting all the threads of the story, his role is active and reactive. This is his story; a story about his downfall.

UGF3 itself lets us watch in real-time as Tartarus slowly deteriorates under the pressure of his mission. He started UGF2 as a polished villain, never losing his cool, cold and calculated, who will carry out his task whatever the cost. And by the end…he’s desperate, screaming, self-destructive.

And in the end, he wasn’t tough enough.

Rather, he was tough in the wrong ways; he wasn’t tough as in resilient, but tough as in closed-off. He sacrificed everything for his ends: any sense of honor, morality, his own life, and even the lives of those entrusted to his care. The lives that, supposedly, he’d been fighting to save.

So TL;DR: the Ultras were Tough Enough, in the sense that they stayed strong in the way all true Ultras do. They held fast to their hope and their bonds, and persevered in compassion and empathy.

And Tartarus acted as a foil and antithesis to those ideals.

….so is that what Tsuburaya meant by that line? "Are You Tough Enough?"

Well, I adjusted my header, blog title, and pfp, that'll do for now. Will probably change my url later. I feel like the brain I had last time I was on here is very different from the one I currently have, though it may just be wishful thinking.

I wrote up a lot more but it just turned into me venting about how bad the Twitter experience is (even before Elon!). I stared it down for a while and finally deleted all that text, I don't want to take that negativity with me.

My pfp is from Wandering Emanon. I think my friends are aware of this manga by now, but if you aren't, it's a wonderful, melancholic, and introspective series about a young woman who lives a very very long time, and what that entails. Melancholic media is some of my favorite stuff.

My header and blog title are from Sukeban Deka (season 2 and the first movie, specifically). I only got back into tokusatsu in the last few years, and recently fell really hard into the rabbit hole, but everything Sukeban-related and aimed at teens has reigned supreme for me. Yoko Minamino comes on screen with her bleeding heart on her sleeve and I'm like, "That's my mom!" (Don't tell my IRL mom, I love her too.)

I rewrote this post several times but I think that's probably still closer to what I want to do online right now than vent. I just wanna yell about my hobbies until they become other people's hobbies.

y'know, even back when i just watched sentai and didn't watch power rangers too, i never understood the existence of sentai purists.

it was (and still is) so weird to me like they act so offended that power rangers exists. like who really cares? it's all still children's superhero shows, is it just the same weird complex that leads to some anime fans to get so defensive if you call anime 'cartoons' (which they are)?

i mean seriously when i started watching sentai back in 2015, i obviously knew about power rangers but it's not like i was thinking about how they adapted the series to the US when i was watching zyuranger or whatever. it's not like how they adapted a sentai to pr somehow affects the sentai when you're watching it.

(hell power rangers existing is good for sentai both as a franchise and as a fandom because of the number of people who got into sentai through pr and, while i'm certain it's different nowadays considering the pr toys are by hasbro [or companies licensed by hasbro to release merch] nowadays and sentai toys are by bandai [so i'd imagine the money involved in toy sales may be different vs how it was before hasbro owned pr], toei still co-owns power rangers and so even if the whole thing where hasbro stops adapting sentai and just has it entirely be their own thing (or doing an mmpr s2/s3 and cosmic fury thing of using the mecha footage from toei but the ranger fight footage is all original) happens, toei will still be getting a check from hasbro, so that's more money for them)

Alright so, next game I plaid was DOOM 64 which is just a doom game on the 64, as good as a doom normally is I suppose lol

Next I tried out Doubutsu no Mori aka.: Animal Forest aka.: Animal Crossing's real first instalment, I plaied it a bit with an english mod, because that one only released in japan, and it is a nice game of course, I never plaied the GC animal crossing (first one I got was wild world) so it is nice to see the origins for the first time, only problem is.... every time I load the town it goes to a black screen... then I have to... reset... and load it again... which causes it to load properly but... it counts as a reset so........ Anyway, at least I got to experience the fire works festival which is unique to jp version of the game I think! that was nice.

next was Dr. Mario 64 which has some really cute cutscene and ingame graphics, with the cutscene using (lowress) artworks on paper like turouts and the ingame characters having some nice animated pixel art (despite the occasional pillowshading lol) very GBA like hah, gameplay wise it is just dr mario lol

Next I found a prototype called dragonstorm which is for a game called Dragon Sword 64, the game was cancelled by the published, but apparently was actually finished, this prototype definitely wasnt... 100% finished but I could try it out a little bit, nothing that felt too intertesting to note however... Speaking of prototypes I wanted to play Dinossaur Planet while on D games as well, but I couldnt get the prototype rom to run unfortunately... if I figure it out later I will definitely talk about it here

Next up was Dual Heroes which is another fighting game that feels just like bio freaks and dark rift, every character has a very long text crawl about their backstory and they all play the same pretty much... even tho each one is made by a different company, this one's theme is post apocalyptic + tokusatsu-esque super heroes power armor people I guess.....? I don't care too much for fighting games gkçdhgklhsdg

Next up was the Duke Nukem games, I mostly plaied Duke Nukem Zer0 H0ur because I am saving Duke Nukem 64 to play coop with a friend! Either way, n64 third person shooter standard stuff, but much better than any other I plaied so far for sure, also not safe for streaming I feel like hah, I only plaied through the first stage but I might play more on the coop campain later! and so...

Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori in Pacific Rim) is returning to the kaiju genre in What to Do With the Dead Kaiju?, as Colonel Sen Masago. Since the kaiju is dead, I think it’ll be much harder for her character to be unceremoniously killed off in a helicopter.

Toei and Shochiku are bringing the film to Japanese theaters on February 4; no word on a U.S. release yet.

Do you think Goncharov (1973) influenced the character of Eli Morrow?

Yes, but not in the way you'd think.

ANGR's cast and premise draw inspiration from real life, generously spiced with diverse bits of pop culture like Stephen King novels, Tokusatsu, Rumble In The Bronx, etc. Good artists borrow, great artists steal, and Goncharov's contributions to the bridge scene in Issue 10 are particularly obvious. But Eli Morrow is not Ice Pick Joe.

If Ice Pick Joe represents a simple man doomed by the joyful exercise of his natural talents, Eli Morrow stands in contrast as a man who, not satisfied by the doom his natural talents offered him, sought out new, more interesting doom. Doom he could spread around, to his nephews for example. Demonic sacrifice doom.

The text doesn't give us much about Eli's personal history, and it's natural to turn to Goncharov to fill in the blanks. Eli's friendship-turned-sour with Yegor Ivanov offers a clear parallel to our second favorite hitman, but Felipe Smith transforms what he steals, and he loves to subvert classic tropes in interesting ways. I read Eli as an inversion of Josep.

There is a nobility to Ice Pick Joe as he meets his fate. Though the audience knows he is most likely innocent, and Joe does indeed fight like a cornered animal, when he is disarmed he kneels quietly, and in death his hand lies across his chest with two fingers extended in a blessing, an easily-overlooked detail for those whose mother never entered a post-divorce Catholic phase. The film's language is clear: Ice Pick Joe does not hold his killers at fault. The evidence was against him, and he would have done the same.

Eli likewise met his end in an (off-panel) orgy of violence, but unlike Joe, he returned from the grave with the sole project of killing his former boss. Everything he does throughout the three arcs of ANGR (2014) work toward this goal; his revenge stands in contrast to Joe's forgiveness, and I would also venture to guess perhaps Eli was guilty where Joe was innocent. We know what justification Yegor Ivanov gave for Eli's killing, that he was disturbed by Eli's traffic with the supernatural, but if we really want to dig into the Eli Morrow/Ice Pick Joe contrasts, it would make a very pretty picture if Eli had actually been informing on Yegor to the FBI.

Not only does he not forgive his killers, but he was actually guilty. A nail in the coffin for the "noble hitman" trope.
