Abzan finally caught up to Summer’s size at ~3 years old, but she’s also always been my most consistent and hearty eater.

It's always a good day when you get musked on by a garter because it means you were lucky enough to find and catch a garter 🐍😊 this tiny plains garter was definitely a highlight of todays field work

Plains Garter Snake
While watching the pollinators on our blooming raspberry plants, I was startled to come face-to-face with this Plains Garter Snake (Thamnophis radix). They eat earthworms and small animals so I am not sure what it was doing in the upper branches of the raspberries. Perhaps it was looking to raid a bird’s nest of its eggs or nestlings.

Plains Garter Snake, Thamnophis radix
Tumblr media
Out for a walk in a nearby park to look for birds, and came across this dude hanging out...literally.  Not sure if this is usual behavior for this type.  I almost wondered if he’d been dropped by a hawk or other predator, but he didn’t appear to be damaged. Once we got close, he quickly dismounted and slithered into the weeds.
Edited to add: Research says yes, garter snakes have been observed to climb trees.  The theory is that on certain days when the ground is damp, the ambient temperature may be warmer a couple of feet above the ground.  If you’ve ever seen a real prairie, that vegetation is thick.  Makes sense to me that a plains snake would learn to climb up out of the shadows and into the sun.

Found these two while I was fishing for carp in a spillway.
Big one I spooked on accident while she was trying to eat a toad out of its burrow. [Common Red-sided Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)]
The second came up out of the water right between my legs while I was waiting for a bite. Just literally came up from the depths of this spillway, popped its head up right between my feet, looked at me, nope’d and swam a few feet away before climbing up the rocks. Super cool! [Plains Garter Snake (Thamnophis radix)]

Garter snake ball along the train tracks, May 2019. I’d thought it was some sort of odd piece of garbage when I spotted it while walking the dog, but as soon as I got close enough to see stripes and scutes, I practically ran home to drop off the dog and pick up the camera. Until I stumbled onto these noodles, I’d had no idea that the urban Chicago area even had snakes! Best ID I could find is Thamnophis radix, the Plains Garter Snake-- their side-stripes are on scale rows 3 and 4 (counting up from the belly scales, or scutes) rather than the Common Garter Snake’s rows 2 and 3. I’m no expert, though, though, so I’d welcome any corrections!

The Plains Garter Snake (Thamnophis radix) is one of the most common snakes found in Iowa. The snake is harmless to humans and can grow to a length of three and a half feet. Like most snakes it flicks its tongue to sense tiny odor particles floating in the air, which tells it what objects are nearby. These snakes mate in the spring and in late summer or fall they can give birth to 10 to 70 babies.

One of the last garter snakes of the year. I loved this guy’s stubby tail and I was doing everything I could to not get musked.
