short review of g f

so sevil part 2 event!!!!! hoo boy this one was actually really surprising (in a good way). like honestly

so im just kinda gonna list things

-the new friend (galanthalus i think?) gosh he gave me the biggest turnaround. like his story started out with ??? narrator who is uneasily calm in a heckscape with gratuitous ultraviolence and 99.9 percent of the time in this game that means that ??? is going to be the stereotypical "ow the edge unhinged uncaring murderous nonhuman something from another world" (ie the imposter girl from the ninetales events, morgan, etc. you know the cringe gratuitous violence scenerey chewing and not in a good way villans that this game keeps having to try and stop ppl from liking them more than the protagonists but it never works). but then the turnaround reveal that it was just a kid who was trapped in the sword for being not human and had been tortured and overlooked by everyone for centuries just bc he suited their needs? the biggest turnaround. and that the ??? who was talking to him/answering his questions wasnt a condescending big bad but keral who stayed to keep him company out of kindness????? and that both her and krel kinda let him be their child they never had and want to let him go back and live in the world?????? bro......

anyways tldr galan was a very pleasant surprise writing wise and i support him. also he lowkey reminds me of idunn and i dig that so much

-the arc of the main trio! ofc it was very depressing but im glad they didnt go for an ending where "everyone survives everything is fine uwu!" bc i feel like that sort of thing, tho it could happen bc of how op the main cast is, it would make all their suffering and pain feel trivialized and thrown out, and itd make me hate the main cast more (they already made themselves dislikable enough imo, with them guilting sevil to stay towards the middle just bc they didnt want him to leave, with no thoughts abt how hed feel. and that being said i love that the reason he stayed was to help galan, not bc he was guilt tripped into it). like it is really sad what happened, esp to krel at the very end, but it did feel conclusive which was nice (please no sequel. this was a good ending. we dont need a sequel to ruin it, i am looking directly at the knights and perfetto events. and maybe a sideye at the robomi ones for the unnecessary prophecy stuff)

-the side character development! like despite the angst, it all felt very organic (with sevil's story already having that old timey gin tama-ey feel it all seemed to make sense in the setting and not come across as cringe or insensitive angst). esp bc we didnt know a lot abt the characters in the first event, as they werent playable and didnt appear that much (they didnt even get journal entries either smh). so hearing more abt their backstories made them feel a lot more fleshed out. it was sweet seeing them stay to help w galan also, i do wish they were playable tho but it does make sense theyd be npcs

-have not seen gacha sevils story but im hoping its good! itd easily put him with caro and main gacha sturm of characters id really want (not to mention limited studra too ofc)

-and ofc. from kisumiverse side, i feel like kisumi is trying to resist the urge to punch danchou and co. in the face the whole time, while trying to be supportive of sev. who, to be utterly fair, is so wrapped up in his problems he doesnt necessarily notice kisu until towards the end. kisu doesnt want him to apologise as she sees that it isnt his fault, just asks him to take care of himself, and he realizes that he has a genuine alive friend in kisumi. its just a fun "friends dealing with grief and loss and the cycle of grief together" story.

-and then theres also the ending trope which is actually like tooth rottingly cute. "my sister and brother in law died and left behind a child that i am raising alongside my best friend" for some like slice-of-life hallmark movie angst-with-a-happy-ending. like literally. i feel like the sevil + galan + kisumi (w the father daughter too bc theyre cool) could be the casts in some heartwarming family movie or something

anyways this event, easy 9/10. maybe even 10/10. like i dont think g f could have a better event. zodicas was eh (playable ragazzo was easily the best part), knights was really meh, dont talk to me abt the perfetto one, i honestly dont mind no robomi bc the last one had elements i dont care for, everything else was just really bad except the really middle of the road collab and the slightly not so bad but also not impactful one w the grimmir squad. but yea this event is easily the best that theyve had in the last few years

i see, well i'll have to check older doctor strange issues to compare. luckily i have plenty of time to do just that!

hhh if i have to give you one word of advice on a few series from fall of x, since you're interested in it, it would be this (these are all comments from friends who tried to get into that new status quo):

astonishing ice man, one of the first series that came out in fall of x, was so bad it was the thing that made a friend of mine quit (iceman was her favourite childhood character). perhaps just stray from it?

xmen 25 is in an odd place because that story is pretty much a rehash of what kitty pryde went through at the start of krakoa aka a murderous revenge quest but now revamped as a ninja and not a pirate. made a friend let out a very confused "AGAIN?!" after he thought that weird character phase was far behind kitty. it didn't help that, like astonishing iceman, xm25 didn't leave him any time to take in the full blunt impact that gala incident had as a slaughter fest before part of the characters that were exploded by nimrod were back to life being absolutely okay in it. since you don't like gratuitous levels of violence, maybe skip this series too?

immortal xmen 15 completely gave away the fate of those 250000 mutants that went through the portals: they're in the desert, alive and fine even if unable to contact the other groups. my friend who likes mysteries was having a mental breakdown over how little suspense the fall of x event has left after pulling a move like that. i see you shared a page from it so i guess you liked it. good for you

No offense to Iceman, I love all the X-Men equally but I'm not too interested in his solo series. He is a funny little dude though and it sucks that it sounds like his story is off to a bad start (rip what happened to him at the gala tho lol)

I will say that I did read X-Men #25 as soon as it came out. And as a newbie reader for this era it sounds like they really are reuse, reduce, recycling the same plots xD why is that happening lol (I haven't read her original arc so I didn't know). I have no personal thoughts on the story because I went into it to see the effects of the world after the gala incident and Immortal X-Men recently helped with that too. Thank you for the warning on the violence too, Kitty did go off in that issue and tbh it did make me uncomfortable, so we'll see how far I can get with this series!

I did share a single page from the Immortal X-Men series and only felt like I had to report on it just cause of that little Dr. Strange callback. This one in particular may have been a little one-liner but references like these are important to me when reading comics outside of Dr. Strange's series because it helps answer my questions and shapes the world.

Really I have no particular beef with any run, I just blink and say: "ok... and then what happens?" There are still some juicy bits to be had and I'll be waiting for those!

Tragedy Exploitation and Characters of Colour

hi! i've browsed your blog for a while now and it's been really helpful to me, so first off, thank you. i was wondering about something tho, i recently saw your response to a person explaining their story idea that revolved around two lovers, where one was cursed to kill the other and the other was always resurrected only for it to repeat, and i believe the characters were POC. in your response you seemed quite upset that such a plot was happening to POC characters specifically and it confused me because it sort of read as if you were mad that a bad thing was happening to a POC character in a story, which i genuinely didn't understand (i really don't want to sound rude, i'm being sincere), because it came off as advocating for only good and happy and nice things to be reserved for POC characters and if an author dared write something bad or traumatic happening to a POC character it's immediately 'poor narrative', and i personally don't agree with that take, because i feel like that reduces a POC character to just being POC instead of a person, which I feel like hurts POC rep in fiction, because being upset someone wrote something bad happening to a POC character makes it all about just that character being POC instead of just a regular person something bad has happened to in the story that just happens to be a person of color at the same time. my god this has gotten long, i got very interested in hearing more about this because i personally didn't quite understand and it sounded wrong to me, your original response. if you do reply to this, thank you, i hope i didn't sound rude, i do genuinely want to learn, because even tho i typed all this out i still feel like i'm wrong about this & missed the point somewhere

Because there are already too many stories of characters of colour (especially multiply marginalized) suffering needlessly and oftentimes worse than the white characters for the sake of a plot.

You completely misread the heart of the reply, which was “why are you forcing Black women to suffer the worst fate imaginable (murder) in one of the most emotionally heartbreaking way imaginable (at the hands of your lover) multiple times in order to “earn her happy ending”? this is tragedy exploitation and is making a mockery of trauma”

PoC already have enough stories about us traumatized by circumstance. And while we can suffer, narratively, part of systemic racism is only telling stories of PoC when we are suffering as the sole marker of the plot. Especially when characters of colour are suffering disproportionately to lighter skinned characters.

You also missed the part where Marika said that even if it were white characters, they would be uncomfortable because constantly pulling out murder as a curse is lazy writing.

All we ask is: why did the asker decide that a woman of colour must suffer to the point of repeated murder before she can be happy? Why does she have to forgive the person who did it to her? Because that is a logic born of passive racism that tells people: women of colour, especially darker skinned/Black women, can “handle anything”. And that is a lie.

Echoing Lesya, I’m puzzled as to how you came to the conclusion that “If an author dared to write something bad or traumatic happening to a POC character, it’s immediately a poor narrative” when I explicitly said I thought this was cheap theatrics and tragedy exploitation even if both characters were white, particularly as the ask had given me no conception of the author’s motivation in using the curse as a dramatic device. In Japanese, we jokingly use the word 中二病 (Chuunibyo) or “8th grade disease” to describe edgelord phases for teens. This is a 中二病 plot device. It’s perfectly fine for niche angst addicts on ao3, but not something I would be able to take seriously in a more substantive work aimed at a larger audience. I think it is also telling that even the original asker has commented that they independent of our answer concluded this was a poor plot choice.

Finally, with respect to your question of the usage of negative tropes like the ones mentioned in this ask (Misogynoir and Bury Your Gays), I am concerned that you do not understand the motive for this blog. Our purpose is to provide instruction to those who wish to use diversity in their writing in an inclusive manner in ways that resonate with marginalized populations. We are not proposing a ban on tropes. They are tools, but like all tools, they have appropriate forms of use. Do you honestly think that many BIPOC individuals would be happy to read a story with this kind of tragedy exploitation? And how would you, as an author, factor in their impressions when writing your own works?

No one can stop a writer from pursuing the narratives they wish to pursue, but the opinions a writer is primarily concerned with says a lot about who a writer believes their work is for. Let us say I were to write a story with a gratuitous depiction of sexual assault purely for the shock value, despite never having experienced sexual assault myself? How might survivors of sexual assault regard both me and my work? Now imagine BIPOC individuals whose main experience with representation in media is seeing characters look like them die from the kinds of violence that are common for them to experience, and it should become clear that an author who adopts these approaches, at a bare minimum, is being exceptionally tactless. A writer who finds no issue with tragedy exploitation involving BIPOC characters is likely not a writer who cares about what the BIPOC members of their audience think, or, even worse, does not even factor BIPOC perspectives into their writing.

I'm sorry but, to me, the whole "Let's all forgive Miranjo" after all the things she gratuitously has done to literally everyone just feels so childlike and just clashes with the whole vibe of the anime. Like, yes, there were moments when the anime had an innocent atmosphere but it still stayed rather down to earth.

But forgiving someone who tried to kill so many innocent people just for her own selfish reasons the same day she tried to kill them all is just so childlike to me! It low key feels like I'm watching the end of a Disney Channel movie where the bully gets a happy ending even tho they were just awful to everyone during the whole movie.

Her happy ending feels undeserving like she literally just said that she was sorry and that's all it took? She tried and killed people! At least try to let her repent herself BEFORE forgiving her! Every character in ROK is treating her like what she did was not a big deal by moving on so easily! That's not a believable reaction!

What they did with Domas and Bojji after the whole murder attempt was on point to me! So, I don't understand how they missed the mark so much with Miranjo! I mean, days after Domas' murder attempt on Bojji, when he saw Domas again days after, he was so traumatised that he couldn't even look at him in the eyes (which is more than understandable)! But, Miranjo who almost killed everyone earlier that day was forgiven the same day? Because " Oh well 🙂"? What is this telling us? That if you had a tragic past, you will be forgiven if you're acting like a terrible human being?? I'm sorry but no! That's not how it works!

like genuinely horror NEEDS to stop taking itself seriously again like I am always first and foremost of the opinion that horror IS an intellectual genre and horror stories DO mean something but they literally Do Not have to be like. socrates' greatest hits to achieve that. like my favorite horror movie of all time is scream (1996), that movie was goofy as hell. 24/7 I am talking about how it is THE movie of all time, it breaks the mold, it has important social commentary etc etc. but it is so fucking goofy. they put freddy kreuger in there. the murderers are the stupidest bitches alive. it makes fun of itself for like the entire runtime. but it is GOOD. and that's even part of why it is good. we need horror to stop being like quiet beach scenes with a blue filter where the protag contemplates life while one (1) scary violin note plays in the background. like even if it isn't camp, it doesn't HAVE to be silly or stupid or making fun of itself to do what I'm saying u know what I mean? like. truly start spilling gallons of corn syrup again and making freaky little dudes whose brains are leaking out of their heads and stuff. everyone said "oh old horror movies were too gratuitous with the sfx" and like yeah ok true got me there sometimes they DID do more than they needed. no one's gonna say that the first nightmare on elm street was bad tho. and then they decided that meant that horror should be too highbrow to rely on that if it wanted to be worth anything and it's like. sometimes there is blood in your movie okay relax it is a horror film people are dying. come on

The invincible comic is like super gratuitous with its violence so much so I'm shocked the show was able to adapt it in a faithful way! (like dcau ugh)

Okay, I read this fics some time ago and I can't find it again so we have to go by what I remeber and what I remeber is a very specific scene in the first chapter.

TW: rape, like a lot of it, and bad, you have been advised.

In this one Loki is a slave (what a surprise) to Thor (again, originality really flow in the fandom hu?) and have been for some years now. The chapter made it very clear that Loki is thought as nothing more than an object, definitly not a human able to decide for himself, and show a pretty heavy pattern of abuse and neglect from Thor. Also, slavery is legal for criminal because criminals aren't considered human because humans have morals and would never commit a crime, this line of thought also mean that the children of criminal must not be human too, after all how could a non-human birth a human? In Loki case he is the son of a murdered and as such he is a slave because he isn't human and cannot be trusted to be a functional member of society, but need someone to look over him, a owner, that should tecnically take care of him. Spoiler: Thor dosent take care of him, such a plot twist, who would have guessed?

But enough prologue, let's come to the cursed part! Thor's friend come to visit him one night and that spell only one thing in Loki's book: bad, because if when they are alone Thor is neglectful and only sometimes physically abusive, when his friends join him he becomes extremely physical. There is then a little flashback about that time that one of Thor's friend was bored so decided to stuck a bottle of beer (full, uncapped and with the opening inside Loki) up Loki's ass and then tie him up and shove him in a closet; Thor then forgot of him and left him there for like an entire day? Maybe more? I don't remember. But that is the past! In the present Loki decide that if he is good enough Thor and his friends would forget he even exist and he will pass the night alright, that doesn't happen. Somehow Loki fuck up and so they decide to have some fun with him. Thor order him in the bedroom on the bed and they decide that they wil fuck him all togheter because nobody wants to wait, but how? Well, they are 5 (Thor, 3 other men + 1 woman) and Loki only have a single ass. At this point the female friends (that turns out is also a sadistic dom that find pleasures in others pain) have an idea so they do it.

One of the men lay down on the bed and Loki is forced to impale himself on his cock in reverse cowgirl position, then he is pushed down on his back until he is laying on the man at which point another one penetrate him (double penetration yay!) and the whole process is explain in gratuitous details paired with a very long internal monologue from Loki about how much it hurts and he can't take it but he also can't stop it or refuse because then the punishment will be worst (I don't remeber what the punishment was tho). At this point there is a long scene, like very long, extremely long and also very detailed about how Loki is fucked by two men in his ass while the woman keep tugging at his hair while he eat her out and simultaneously he must masturbate Thor and the other friend. Is... someting, definitly a read for sure. Loki obviusly often elapse because is just too much to do at the same time while he is in excruciating pain and so the other beat him to bring him back and continue making it impossible for him to even disassociate or pass out, he is forced to stay coherent and present for the whole ordeal. There are also nipples clamp involved. At some point the woman start sucking Loki of while he's still eating her, but his cock is closed in a cock cage so it obviusly hurt a lot and is also explain how much it hurts for several lines, also she start plaing with a sound, the fic say that she was "fucking him in the most intimate and literal sense a woman could while his ass was still full" or something like that. Anyway, in the end they all come (expect Loki of course) and they trow him at the foot of the bed. I don't remeber what happen after. The fic was quite long and a lot more cursed stuff happens after, maybe if I find it again I will share, but yeah, that's it for now.
