Childhood Memories
WARNING: this is kind of depressing as it talks about good memories that I miss so if you’re in a bad mood, don’t read it.
Did anyone else have their parents read novels to them when they were little?
I was probably about five when it started. I remember almost every night crowded around the couch in the living room before we went to bed My mom would sit down and read us a chapter from one of the chronicles of Narnia books. Then once we finish that book it would be my dad’s turn, and he would start reading us one of the Wizard of Oz books or something from the Black stallion series. We always beg them for a chapter more and we’d end up staying up really late. But that was OK.
then in the car to school or gymnastics, or while our mom was running errands, she would play audiobooks of magic treehouse, boxcar children, Geronimo Stilton, or the series of unfortunate events (which we did eventually finish). You know back when cars have cd players.
there were those two times where my dad read us the hobbit and the wind in the willows and we were really bored, but we let him read it. And then he’d bring books back from Australia on his work trips and read them to us in an Australian accent that we teas him for.
and then it just stopped. I don’t remember a reason for it stopping. It started with the end of novel reading at night, and then it ended with the audiobook of the phantom tollbooth. I don’t even remember when it was that it ended but it did. We only got about halfway through the black stallion series, we never read the last two books of Wizard of Oz, or the last one and a half books of chronicles of Narnia. We wanted to read them, but we still never did.
At one point we tried to start reading again when my mom decided to read us some of her childhood Trixie Belden books. But we read a few, and it never stuck, eventually fading away because it didn’t feel the same as it did when I couldn’t read those big words for myself.
I feel like I can never get the small joy back. I remember fondly, but I also miss it. These are the kind of things that I want to keep from my childhood.

The chasm opened into a small sliver of a valley with a stream crossing its center. The stallion lengthened his strides, running to the fresh water to drink his fill. --The Black Stallion and Flame by Walter Farley

I remember reading through the Black Stallion books in middle school and in book 2 the kid has to give The Stallion back to his original owner and then in book 4 he gets a letter that’s basically ‘the stallion has trampled my father to death 😡 I do not want him anymore 😡 will you take him back’ and the kid is just like ‘oh dope! My horsie!’

Holy shit the more I learn about Rich Strike the more amazed I am. 80 to 1 odds. That’s the second biggest odds in the history of the Kentucky Derby. The longest was in 1913 and 91 to 1. And he wasn’t even originally supposed to compete. After Ethereal Road was scratched from the race they replaced him with Rich Strike on Friday. I didn’t even realize he had overtaken the front runners until the race was over and they said 21. Then rewatching him making his way through the pack to the front was amazing to watch. We were all in shock. Then he comes off and immediately starts biting the pony.
In fact we did a random draw bet at my uncles house and the guy who got 21 was like oh well I guess I lost. And when I checked the odds for him he was at 99 to 1.
He came out of nowhere and causes one of the biggest upsets in Derby history. And I’m so proud of him for it. I haven’t felt this excited about horse racing since I watched American Pharaoh win the Triple Crown in 2015. It’s the excitement I got the first time I read “The Black Stallion” which continues to be my favorite book despite the fact that I am over 20

Thanks for the asks @marieziffer!
5. A movie musical you like
I answered this one here!
20. A movie you think looks beautiful
Well, my first answer would by my favorite movie, The Black Stallion. The cinematography in that film is extraordinary! But you know, I'm going to say it, I think The Last Jedi is the most beautiful Star Wars movie out there! I don't care if you didn't like the story or the character development, you have to admit the cinematography is gorgeous!
23. An animated movie you like
I'm a huge fan of animated movies, especially Disney. My favorite Disney animated it probably still Beauty and the Beast. My favorite non-Disney animated is The Last Unicorn.

Illustration for a hypothetical reprinting of Walter Farley’s 1941 The Black Stallion. I loved this book so much as a kid, and it was fun to revisit it as an adult!

Thinking about how Walter Farley wanted to write sci-fi but he couldn’t sell any books that weren’t about those damn ponies so he just had aliens show up on the island. King shit.

I wasn’t supposed to be sitting all day with my leg the way it is, but I’ve been wanting to do these little scene studies for awhile now.
Here’s a couple studies for scenes I think about a lot.  Some of them since I was like... six.
