I'm sure someone already pointed it out, but– I just can't get over the symbolism of the church scene in 1941. How the bomb shatters the church and kills the nazis and leaves Aziraphale and Crowley behind.
The bomb literally destroys the Good™ (the church obviously represents Heaven) and the Bad™ (we know that the nazis represent Hell because that's where we meet them again. Also, they're nazis) but it doesn't do any harm to Aziraphale and Crowley, therefore placing them with neither Good nor Bad but rather something in between.
Tumblr media
Look at them. The sacred ground is scattered around them, not even sacred anymore, since Crowley no longer is bothered by it. What once was to resemble the Evil is now buried beneath.
Tumblr media
But there is Aziraphale, who used a miracle to save not only himself but also Crowley. And there is Crowley, who used a miracle to save Aziraphale's books. Because they care for each other. Because they look out for each other. Because neither of them is solely good or bad, they are shades of grey.
Tumblr media
We even see Crowley pulling the bag out of the dead person's hand, which could be interpreted as an act of ultimate liberation from the past. After thousands of years of choosing between Heaven and Hell, Crowley chooses to save the books for Aziraphale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though this scene takes place years before they get cut loose from Heaven and Hell respectively, it already depicts Aziraphale and Crowley as independent from both, as their own team. It's the visual proof that they already are an us.
In the end, it all comes down to them. When Heaven and Hell lose their power, when there's little more than broken pieces left –
Aziraphale and Crowley still survive. Together.
Tumblr media
Anyways, I'm going mad over here

“You see, Tintin, Londoners are a particularly miserable subspecies of Englishman. Subterranean, anti-social, you could kill one with eye contact alone-”
“Captain, now is really not the time.”
It’s 1940. London is getting firebombed by Nazis. For the past few years Tintin and Chang have been out of work, having been outed as a couple by the press. They have spent some time travelling around with an ageing Captain Haddock to foil various fascist plots. Upon hearing about the bombing runs on London they go up to check on Chang’s uncle, who has an antique shop in Limehouse.
More story details under the Read More. Let me know if there’s anything you wish for me to tag, cw for mentions of racism:
Chang’s London cousins have since been evacuated to Kent. While trying to get what remains of Mr Wong’s possessions together they run into one of them, the boisterous Wendy Wong. She ran away from her countryside guardians back to London, revealing to have suffered a lot of racial abuse. Being the bravest of her siblings, she and her siblings planned for her to go back to London to find their dad. She’s distraught at her home’s destruction and feels frustrated and powerless. Her father is less than thrilled, and demands Chang take her back up to Kent.
Tintin is really trying his best to help Mr Wong and get on his good side, knowing full well he doesn’t approve of him and Chang. While searching through rubble Haddock gets talking to some community organisers and learns about locals planning on using the local Underground stations as shelters and agrees to help. One evening he stumbles across a disused service tunnel and overhears some German spies discussing suspicious plans.
Tintin offers to escort Wendy to Kent. A worried Captain Haddock informs Tintin of what he witnessed last night. Wendy overhears and wants to help, wishing to be a hero like Tintin and Chang, and emboldened by a sense of responsibility for her home. Chang, having previously lost family members to war, is sympathetic to her and believes she should be allowed to help. Tintin is reluctant to let Mr Wong down. Haddock feels like he’s herding cats.
TL;DR: Trains! Anti fascism! A story about finding common ground to fight back against nazis.

Everyone is talking about Aziraphale's reaction when enters the magic shop for the invitation at the Meeting of the Whickber Street Shopkeepers and Street Traders Association. But also Crowley is not indifferent to the sight of the shop.

You can see a tiny half-smile appear on his face (the tiniest, most insubstantial, fractional half-smile...), maybe for the memories of a special evening spent with his angel after many years apart?

So Crowley saves Aziraphale's books in 1941. Because he loves him, because it doesn't matter Aziraphale has hundreds more at home, each one is cherished. Then 72 years later, Aziraphale gives up not a dissimilar amount of books to create a situation where he can invite Crowley to dance. Because he loves him, because he thinks dancing with someone is a direct pipeline to uncovering hidden feeling. Cool, cool cool cool, cool cool cool.

I just watched a fascinating video on the Blitz. Apparently it ended in May of 1941. Although Good Omens was not mentioned in the video, it was all I could think of.

Title: Vicissitude Series: Virtue and Volatility Fandom: Mass Effect Rating: Mature Characters: Jackson Shepard, Garrett Coats, Warren Mills (OMC), Steven Hackett Relationships: mShepard/Coats Tags: pre-canon, Elysium, The Blitz, canon-typical violence, implied sexual content, Outsider POV, PTSD, Drinking, trans male Shepard, renegade Shepard Word Count: 7171
Summary: Vicissitude- a variation in circumstances or fortune. Elysium, the Blitz, and choices that change the course of Jackson Shepard's life.
Notes: So, Jackson is a study in contradictions, and even more than in Verisimilitude, I discovered while writing this fic how god damn difficult in can be to demonstrate the emotional state of a guy who flat out refuses to be aware of his own emotional state lol
Anyway, I hope you enjoy learning more about Jackson. I enjoyed writing this, even the darkest bits. Also, I've done a thing I don't normally do, which is attach a song to each chapter because they're just songs that I hard associated with the chapter while I was writing it. I'll be putting them in the chapter notes as I post.
Just like Verisimilitude, this fic is complete, and I'll be posting once a week on. It is important to note that while I don't have any *super* detailed descriptions of what happens, this fic does have some darker themes.
Thank you to @rotschopf-thedrow for batting this around with me constantly for the last like... month and for alpha reading for me! And thank you to @ad-astra13 for beta reading for me <e
Special thanks to @swaps55, @bioticbooty @mallaidhsomo for helping me flesh out some of my ideas!
Read Chapter 1 Here
Excerpt:
“What the fuck is that?” His voice shakes.
“That is a batarian ship,” Shepard mutters, eyes narrowing as he looks up at it. “Probably not the only one either. How the hell did they break atmo without an alarm going up?”
Warren can’t breathe. Five minutes.
The acrid smell of burning plaster and worse overwhelms him, and his stomach rebels, emptying its contents onto the floor. He’s going to lose his job over this. If he’s lucky. Explosions sound in the near distance. He can feel them vibrating through the ground, but they’re far enough away not to be a danger to him.
They’re under attack. People are dying. His eyes flick to the bakery. People are dead. He’d just wanted a cup of coffee. “There hasn’t been a raid here in years.”
Shepard shakes his head. The orange and yellow flicker of the city burning around them plays across his calm, focused expression. “They’re pirates, not idiots. They don’t target capital cities for raids.”

Let's go back to 1941 for a bit.....
Because I have THOUGHTS.
We talk a lot about 1941 being a story that is not yet complete. There are enough Hints, Easter eggs, Clues and even a likely Chekhov's gun* that have appeared so far that there needs to be a denouement that takes place in Season 3. There's been enough screen time devoted to this particular encounter that we are primed to see it as *important* to their relationship.
It's important to note that everything related to their time together in 1941 has likely already been filmed.**
We all saw this moment of realization on Aziraphale's face.
Tumblr media
What happened after their tender little tête à tête in the bookshop that culminated in Aziraphale doing the apology dance? We don't know why neither one of them miracled Mrs. H's whisky bottles when that could have easily solved her problem. The "famous Mr Crowley" was famous as what-a bootlegger? A gangster? Apparently someone notorious.
Remember Aziraphale said that he did the dance IN 1941, not later. And if we conclude that Crowley's showing up in the church was the first time they have seen each other in that year, it had to have happened afterwards.**
I'm also interested in parallels between 1941 and the Final Fifteen. We see that in both eras they seem highly emotionally connected to one another, to the point that there's a lot of speculation that something *romantic* is about to happen between them (in 1941). And both times Aziraphale does something that imperils them or their relationship (in 1941, inadvertently collaborating with Nazis, later trusting the obviously untrustworthy Metatron).
What does this mean? I have no idea. But YOU, dear reader, probably DO. So please, consider away.
Yah, I did footnotes yet again. It's what I do
*Important to note that a shot from a Derringer generally won't inflict a mortal wound. it can hurt you but it doesn't produce enough energy or speed for a round to penetrate, for example, the human skull or even the chest. Abdomen, yes, but it's a single small round and isn't much more destructive than buckshot.
**I'm absolutely certain of this because Neil et al wouldn't try to go back and try to recreate the sets, costumes, etc with actors who are 5 years older than they were when the original scenes were shot. He knows his audience are way too observant for that. Plus I think this sort of figures into his statement that David and Michael know the plot of Season 3. Everybody else was just shooting the scene.
***Note how quickly Crowley shuts up and dances as soon as the words "1941" were out of Aziraphale's mouth.

Oh… oh my gosh…
I just noticed something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems to be that Crowley’s almost entirely stopped wearing his glasses while alone with Aziraphale. Even in moments they appear to be quarreling, they’re still off.
So in season 1 we were pretty much mostly in agreement the Crowley’s the one who knows he’s got it down bad and is just patiently waiting in agony for Aziraphale to catch up. And so… well? He still kind of kept some distance, just that little bit of reserve that would allow him to save face. Crowley talks a big game about running off together and being on their own side, but he is, after all, all about insurance.
There’s also, paradoxically, the element of Crowley’s eyes being the only thing that visibly marks him as a demon. They meaningfully separate the two in a way that at best they would politely ignore and at worst crack under the pressure of. The glasses serve the purpose of displaying an unwillingness to fully be close with Aziraphale before he’s ready to assure Crowley, but also a fear of setting them apart by highlighting a striking reminder of how Crowley officially “failed” to be worthy of divine and loving companionship.
Then you have Aziraphale, who still in part is trying to hide what he’s got going on with Crowley. Even though everyone seems to now know they’re close friends and mostly leaves them alone… so what exactly is Aziraphale still hiding?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Come on, we all know what it is. I mean fucking look at him! Micheal Sheen understood the assignment.
Alright alright, enough ribbing and back to hopefully smart and coherent thoughts. So this dynamic of Crowley being a bit ahead in the ✨understanding✨ front and Aziraphale needing more time is nothing new. But now we have a situation where Aziraphale is without a shadow of a doubt fully aware of his feelings, and has nothing else to stall with. In theory he has everything he wants with Crowley, to “dine at the ritz” and be left alone to enjoy the gifts of earth, and yet, he’s still longing. Then Crowley is just as ready to be the woo-er as before, but he’s also ready to be more vulnerable, more trusting, than ever.
Mark my words. SOMETHING is a-brewin’. So uh… who’s excited for season 2? 😅
