Wild versus injury of a loved one

Warnings: Wild's death is mentioned once, like one cure word

Wild has lost a lot. Over the years, he remembers fully he's lost a lot. He's sure he lost more before.

So sitting here, waiting for news on if Time is okay - well, he's only sitting because he's already exhausted himself sparring.

He dosen’t like this. No one does, obviously... but Wild-

He can only remember the faint words of something Urbosa told him before. Something about having 'done all you can' and that it's 'going to be okay'.

He hates when he remembers the other champions. He failed them... and he doubts they'd even recognize him now.

And-

"Your brother is stable." Says a Hylian woman, leaning out of the doorframe Time is behind.

"Can we see him?" Twilight asks.

"No more than two at a time." She says.

Twilight stands, "Wild and I will go first. Then you guys can pair up."

Wild stands, surprised Twilight said that. But he shouldn’t be. Twilight and Time both seem to know what he needs more than he does.

Wild and Twilight make their way into the room, the woman closing the door behind them.

"He's weak. But he's alive, and stable." She says, moving to the bedside table.

"Thank you." Twilight says.

Wild just stares at Time, watching the even rise and fall of the old man's chest. Finding relief in the steady rhythm.

He's really okay.

"C'mon, " Twilight says, "Let's let the old man know he's not dead. Hm?:

"Yeah." Wild manages, looking to Twilight.

Wild moves forst, stopping beside the bed.

"You're loud." Time says with a groan.

"You're okay." Wild manages

"Of course I am."

Wild just breathes through the tears that seem to appear without warning. "I- good."

"We've all been worried." Twilight says from beside Wild.

Wild nearly jumps - for everything he's faced, he didn't hear Twilight move.

"Thanks. But I'm okay."

"We know." Tiwkight says.

Wild just stares, relieved and terrified at once. He still watches Time's breathing, counting silently.

"I'm not going anywhere, Wild."

"I know." He says, still not sure he believes it.

"I mean it."

"We won't let him." Twilight says.

"Okay." Wild says.

And Time isn't going anywhere at all. He's a chosen hero, like the others. They may have a fuckton of trauma, but they don't die easy.

(Wild remembers that he didn't die easy, eaither.)

There’s only a couple big named heroes whom are also on Yuu’s shit list for various reasons: Rielle, he originally was pretty high on the “do not forgive, do not forget” rankings, but unlike the Champion, he acknowledges that his hero technique has flaws and is actively working to fix it. Doesn’t mean he’s entirely out of the doghouse. Crimson Muscle is just above where Rielle is. Mostly because he has yet to realize that Yuu/Perfect is just as capable as him without superpowers. And his broadcasted smiting of poor Hermes doesn’t do him any favors. Champion is third place. The one to actually earn second place on the list is Briar Patch (Twst Briar Rose/Aurora) because he is obliviously spoiled and naive. If champion’s checkerboard mentality is obnoxious, then Briar patch’s fairytale view is WORSE. Malleus is nothing but a big dumb dragon to slay and Yuu is the damsel in distress that he’ll ride off into the sunset with for a happy ending. Regardless if he just helped set ten blocks on fire waving his sword all Willy-nilly blocking Tsnuotarou’s fireballs trying to be showy to Yuu. His fairy Godfathers will just simply magic the damage away, no big deal… First place go Crowley. -🍋

And oooh, I love the name Briar Patch for Diasomnia’s hero!! Nice job with it!!

Chen’ya is Yuu’s favorite hero. Given that when they first met, he dropped Yuu from a stories-high balcony, that probably speaks to the tenor of the rest of the list. In reality though, Niko Niko Neko is one of the few that actually seems to be able to see these situations outside of the black-and-white mentality of his peers, and is more concerned with pushing the envelope in the name of teammates’ and civilian welfare rather than doing the “heroic” thing.

White Neige is…well…he’s so flashy it’s kind of embarrassing? Yuu feels bad about thinking that, because he and his seven dwarves are genuine, hardworking heroes, compassionate enough that he’s one of the few who’s more likely to take it a bit easier to protect civilians or extend a hand of mercy to his enemies. It’s just he’s so earnest, when admiring the strength of the Prefect, or professing to Yuu that he’ll protect them, and that transformation…it’s mortifying for them even to watch. They didn’t need that view, thanks.

Rielle might be more careless than Yuu would like with his abilities, especially considering their power to deprive merpeople of their free will and agency, but he’s at least willing to recognize that he’s still new to the heroics business and take constructive criticism onboard, or listen to Yuu or the Prefect when they’re cooperating against the supervillains and take their advice about how to best solve the situation. He’s young, but he’s learning and growing.

Lion Guard appears to be everything a model, older hero should be—brave, considerate, self-disciplined, and just. The only downside is that he has serious blinders when it comes to his little brother. He’ll go far too hard on Leona’s minions and then weirdly easy on Leona himself because he so desperately wants his brother to be “redeemed”—enough that he’ll even consider things that should be clearly morally dubious from the outset. Yuu hasn’t forgotten needing to stand between Farena, a younger Twst!Leona, and a brainwashing.

Crimson Muscle isn’t as fawning as the previous two junior heroes, but his determination to “protect” those without superpowers is patronizing in the extreme. He refuses to even consider the other, more mundane accomplishments someone without powers can achieve, instead viewing them in an infantilizing fashion results in him getting in the Prefect’s way and impeding Yuu’s investigations more than the villains sometimes. His destructive tendencies when fighting “enemies on his level” also leave a sour taste in Yuu’s mouth, even if he says he’s sorry for what he did to Ortho.

Champion has the worst black and white mentality they’ve ever seen, quite literally from how Yuu’s seen him speak of events entirely as if they were moves on the world’s strangest chess board. All heroes versus monsters, not even acknowledging the villains as people. The man’s clearly working with some kind of eating disorder in mind in the context of his powers, and he’s trying to get better with Che’nya’s help. Yuu would feel sympathetic towards him, but. But they keep seeing Ace collapse, limp and bloody, in front of them. The Prefect can work with the Champion, and Yuu can be civil and pleasant towards him, but they can’t forget that.

Briar Patch somehow manages to best the Champion to this spot in Yuu’s list, which would be impressive if he wasn’t so…creepy. Seriously, who sneaks up behind someone, grabs them, and starts singing at them?! …Admittedly a lot of the supervillains, but they’re villains, and if Yuu kicks up enough of a fuss they’ll keep their hands to themselves. This guy? He’s clearly never been told “no” before in his life, spoiled rotten by those three fairy godfathers that follow him around like a weird parental cheer squad. So even when Yuu’s yelling the word in his ears, he just acts like they’re playing hard to get and grabs harder. The Prefect has only narrowly escaped having their own head lopped off when he tries fighting Tsunotaro, he has no regard for who or what gets hurt in his aims to vanquish the “villains”.

Namir al-Asim holds a special place of disdain in Yuu’s heart. Arrogant, belligerent, and inconsiderate are probably the tamest words that can accurately describe his approach to heroics. The fact that a guy like him is still tolerated as part of the Royal Sword Association is what damages Yuu’s faith in the organization most.

Crowley is still at the top of Yuu’s shitlist though XD XD

One of the most memorable interactions was Saturday. Into our booth strolls a small family, tempted by free samples of freshly brewed tea. We chatter and give them the spiel, that the tea is character merch and we’re a cozy health-based app called Forage Friends.

The young girl zeroes in on our pride pins.

“They have my pin!” She says excitedly. “They have my flag!”

The dad blinks. He is surprised, but also calm and positive when he sees it’s the lesbian flag. “Oh. That’s… different from what you told me.”

“That was months ago, dad.” And she rolls her eyes. Definitely a teenager.

I turn to him and say, “Yeah, dad.” And we share a little laugh about it.

He says, “No, it’s great. That’s amazing, honey. It was just news to me.”

“Well, I guess I just decided to stop lying to myself. About liking guys. Like right now.”

A little lesbian just came out to her dad and he was super cool about it.

I’m standing there in my tie-dye mask and my cheery blue apron pouring tea and making small talk and I’m trying really hard not to cry or compare it to my experience, the fire & brimstone, the disgust, the conditional acceptance as long as I never bring it up.

So as this beautiful bonding is going on, the girl’s even younger brother turns his gaze around. He’s in a snorlax hoodie and bored and wants to go look at the swords across the hall. But on the other side of our booth….

“WHY DO PEOPLE DRAW THAT?” He asks loudly, and we all turn to our neighboring booth.

Our neighbors were extremely lovely people. Every time we had a break we would talk, and we became good friends over the weekend. They kept apologizing that their booth was next to ours and we kept repeating that it was totally fine. Their booth was great. I even bought their merchandise.

The thing that was so contentious, that they felt the need to apologize for, was that they were selling explicit titty hentai stickers of popular characters. They were censored with little yellow R18 labels but the content was very clear.

So back to the family: I freeze and immediately go somewhere else to let dad handle this question. With adult customers I’ve been loud and positive about our neighbors. (“Man, how has it been boothing next to them?” It’s been great! They bring a lot of foot traffic and they’re kind and wonderful professional neighbors. If anything it’s a fun juxtaposition. We believe in artistic freedom. I bought a sticker too!)

But this is a kid, it’s not my place to explain anything…. But I was extremely curious about what this chill dad would say.

“Well,” dad says with a long measured silence between each word. “Sometimes people are horny.”

After that last ask, all I can imagine is Deuce using the Hobby Horse hammer and Trey using the Teapot Cannon. The Pepper Grinder and the Teapot Cannon would definitely suit Trey and I will die on this hill if someone says otherwise.

Now I'm kinda picturing the Champion would use the same Vorpal Blade as Alice from the games. Just straight up using a knife to fight villains.

Deuce does have a hammer! It’s more like a crocket mallet than the Hobby Horse, but with his strength, it has equally devastating effects when wielded.

(His initial idea was two cauldrons strapped to a stick. It took a while for Cater to dissuade him from that.)

You are so right about the Pepper Grinder and the Teapot Cannon suiting Trey down to the ground though! I was initially so torn between the two for him!

I imagine the Champion’s Vorpal Sword is a combination of the Vorpal Blade of Alice: The Madness Returns and the Sword from the live action movie—a straight sword covered with the intricate swirls of the Vorpal Blade, if a little less bloodstained. (For now, at any rate…)
