Sad to hear about David McCullough dying recently. He's written some great biographies.
Yes, I was also saddened by his recent passing. When it comes to writers and historians, David McCullough has always been one of my heroes. I feel that very few historians have had the ability to make such deeply-researched, scholarly work as readable as David McCullough was able to do. In almost every instance, his books were as literary as they were historical, and that required very distinct talents as a storyteller. When I was growing up, it was McCullough who first made me realize that, when done masterfully at the highest level, writing history could be a form of art. And David McCullough was clearly an artist.
I've been a fan of pretty much every book that David McCullough ever wrote, from his biographies of John Adams (undoubtedly my favorite of his Presidential biographies), Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry S Truman to The Johnstown Flood and The Great Bridge, among others. And while his entire bibliography is worth checking out, I think his masterpiece is The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914. I'll miss his voice (as a writer, of course, but also his literal voice as a narrator of documentaries) and am disappointed that we won't get new books from him, but he leaves behind a legendary library of work and I'll always be grateful for the example he set as a writer and as a lifelong advocate for expanding history literacy in the United States.

(The New York Times) – David McCullough, who was known to millions as an award-winning, best-selling author and an appealing television host and narrator with a rare gift for recreating the great events and characters of America’s past, died on Sunday at his home in Hingham, Mass., southeast of Boston. He was 89.
The death was confirmed by his daughter Dorie Lawson. No specific cause was given.
Mr. McCullough won Pulitzer Prizes for two presidential biographies, “Truman” (1992) and “John Adams” (2001). He received National Book Awards for “The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal” (1977) and “Mornings on Horseback” (1981), about the young Theodore Roosevelt and his family.
Deep research and lively readability were hallmarks of his books, and so was their tendency to leap off the shelves. “Truman” topped The New York Times’s best-seller list for 43 weeks; “John Adams” was No. 1 in its first week and has since gone through dozens more printings.
His readers got a lot of work for their money: The Adams project took Mr. McCullough seven years, and “Truman” took him 10 (and when at last he showed his wife, Rosalee McCullough, the massive typescript, he said, she was amazed that it hadn’t taken longer). “The Great Bridge” (1972), his exhaustive account of the technology, personalities and politics involved in building the Brooklyn Bridge, was hailed as a monument in its own right. Yet there was hardly anything in his writing to suggest that he had ever staggered under the weight of his homework.

An interesting little fun thing with team 7 is that you assume that Sakura's gonna, like, woobify and simplify Sasuke by putting him on a pedastal, cause her goal is centered around him and shes a 12 y/o fangirl so like of course her understanding of him is skewed cause she doesnt see him as a person, just an object of affection, right? She's can't get Sasuke, can't imprint on and/or traumabond with him like Naruto and Kakashi do. They don't see him with rose tinted glasses, because they've lived through their own Horrors and empathize with Sasuke's experience.
......right?
WRONG lmao!! They have too many ghosts!! Naruto's single-minded codependent ass won't get out of his own way long enough to see Sasuke for who he actually is, only able to empathize with the parts of his trauma Naruto relates to and not really capable of understanding him outside of the context of himself (because Sasuke is. His other half). And Kakashi is far too jaded to be fair to him!! He can't decide if Sasuke is gonna end up as a mini-him or a mini-Obito or maybe a mini-Itachi, but either way he ALSO is too traumatized to see Sasuke AS SASUKE.
meanehile SAKURA'S autistic ass may have dogshit empathy, but you know what she does have? A special interest in sasuke. Nothing better to do then give herself a degree in Uchihaisms. She can write character studies about him. she can read his soul. Whenever she says something about him she is right. Every fucking time! She is RIGHT!!!!
'sasuke would NOT compliment me this directly or explicitly express worry unprompted, especially if it gets in the way of his goals' correct.
'Sasuke shouldn't hide that curse on his neck its not healthy BUT if I tell anyone about it he'll never trust me again, which might be even more dangerous for him then the curse mark. Like he can probably handle the curse mark but no one else can stop him from ripping peoples arms off.' correct.
Speaking of! 'Sasuke would not hurt me even when he seems to be...possessed? whatever the only way to knock him out of it is to present myself as Alive and thus something to be protected rather then something to be avenged, because he gets really stuck in his own head about revenge' CORRECT
'hey so um. like. Sasuke's gonna leave Konoha. I'm not sure anything can stop him at this point and honestly I'm kinda starting to doubt anything should, so the only thing I could possibly do to help him at this point is ALSO defect.' CORRECT!!!!
#shout out to @Obihoe cause this started as a tag comment on one of your posts that got WAY too out of hand. just like old times lol#team 7#haruno sakura#sakura haruno#sasuke uchiha#team crackhead#naruto#naruto uzumaki#sasusaku#doesn't have to be but like. Yeah#for the record no disrespect to my boys Naruto n Kakashi I love them dearly. but like. they got their issues. that's half the fun of team 7#And Sakura has her problems with Sasuke too!! But her problems have nothing to do with understand him or his motivations or his personhood#and more to do with. Well. her absolute dogshit empathy. Emotionally disregulated ass.#'if you leave me I'll feel just like you did when your parents died' My beloved. Iconic. Great line. No notes. She's really just still so#inexperienced and naive that means she can explain and predict and KNOW him and his actions but still not empathize. She can say shit#like that with a straight face because she's never FELT loss like this before (except that minute she thought he was dead on the bridge)#so she can't imagine a worse pain. Just assumes it can't GET worse because she has no emotional concept of 'worse'. so it must be the same#she's literally the only person with a chance of convincing Sasuke to take her with him to Orochimaru because he's SASUKE of course she#knows all the right pressure points and keywords and concerns and stuff that she needs to convince him.#she's literally playing a little diolouge tree game with him. And maybe even winning up until that line! it's the dealbreaker

Okay so ive always had issue with people complaining about literary analysis with the whole "sometimes the curtains were just blue" but like. stop for a moment and think. just for a moment.
Why would an author bother calling attention to an unimportant detail? Theres only so much space in a book, when there's so much story to be told. Why would they single out a detail like that, when its clear that it should just be a background detail, something glanced over and not thought of.
Authors are not stupid, and theyre rarely pretentious. These details have meaning because they are fixated upon.
Why would Katherine Paterson write a whole chapter in Bridge to Terabithia about a family remodelling a living room? Because the golden room is the family's fresh start. They're starting over fresh, its a new day, a new world for them. The room isnt the focus, the characters are.
Why would F Scott Fitzgerald call attention to the green light across the bay in The Great Gatsby? Who cares about some dumb light illuminating the bay? Because its not about the light. Its symbolism. Gatsby sees a beacon every night, something that drives him forward, a goal that he so desperately wants to attain, visible, but just out of reach.
Media is not always intended to be taken at face value. Creators strive to make something their audience will think about, brew over, be inspired by, and truly love and appreciate. Its not about the curtains. It never was, and never is.
