Whittaker also recently revealed that she asked her former Doctor Who co-star John Bishop for his advice before taking part in the series, after he appeared on it in 2021.
She said: "I rang John Bishop, who said he had a great time on it. And also, I remember him smashing the bowl, so I thought, 'I can’t do much worse.'"

DLALA THUKZIN, ZABA & SYKES - "IPLAN"
youtube
Amapiano is probably our most consistently high-scoring genre. Joshua Kim explains how it's evolving...
[8.25]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: The greatest musical development in South Africa this year was 3-step, a style of house music coined by Thakzin that bridges AfroTech and amapiano. He isn't the first to have made songs in this zone (the earliest I've found is Prince Kaybee & Nokwazi's "Ebabayo" from 2021), but he did produce numerous tracks that made him its current poster boy. The genre's most clear, defining feature is the presence of a kick drum on the 1, 3, and 4 of a measure (and less commonly the 1, 2, and 3), which grants each song a more rigid foundation than the typical amapiano track. It's a perfect fit for Dlala Thukzin's "iPlan" and its hopeful lyrics. Zaba sings about not having money or a job, and his voice weaves in and out of the song, like the still-small voice inside your head that tells you to stay calm. And really, it's only fitting that "iPlan" functions as an EDM song without an all-consuming drop; what arrives instead is steady, comforting relief. Its clanging percussion has felt like a multitude of metaphors to me: the pounding beat of your heart, a sign that you're still alive; the sound of repetitive toil, like the promise of something coming from all your hard work; even a desire for reprieve amid life's constant suffering. Here is a song that acts as an invitation to grieve and to celebrate. The beat keeps going, and as I look back on another year, this serves as a nice reminder that somehow, miraculously, I'm still here too. [10]
Micha Cavaseno: I hit a place of personal burnout somewhere in the mid 2010s with the different regional dance scenes of the world made available for all of us by the internet breaking down geographic restriction. Part of it was the fast & loose fashion mentality that made sub-genres go from underrated to overrated within a span of mere weeks, and how any artist could go from essential to disposable before you'd truly had a chance to digest it. To this day, plenty of lingering questions haunt me: did I "miss out" when bubblin' was a thing (maybe)? Was Zomby right to get banned from a message board because people thought bassline and niche were the same (yes)? Did Resident Advisor's coverage specifically get worse when they eliminated the comment section and thus prevented proangelwings from lighting their ass up all the time for pedestrian summaries (no, but it didn't help)? Now I look at an artist like Dlala Thukzin and sigh that I can't in any good faith claim to have a real comprehension of the differences between gqom, afriampo, afrotech, kuduro, kwaito, so on and such... Though I know that it's there, and I need it in order to know what makes a song like this particularly good beyond how muscular yet gentle it is. It's great to admire something for spectacle, but I would like to know the brilliance (or even the clunkiness) of form one day. [8]
Ian Mathers: There's a pleasing graininess to some of the synths here that remind me of other amapiano I've heard, but I'm less familiar (but still taken) by the stiff percussion that sometimes sounds like it's slightly phasing in and out. Both play off the high, sometimes keening vocals very well. The end result is both propulsive and, especially on headphones, subtly disorienting - it can make your head feel like it's swirling. And I haven't even tried listening to it baked yet! [8]
Kat Stevens: Like finding a couple of ibuprofen in the drawer when you were looking for codeine: grateful they exist but missing that extra oomph. [7]
Katherine St Asaph: In isolation, this is a bit too muted for a desensitized tension-enjoyer like me to be drawn to. I'd probably love it in the right DJ set. [7]
Michelle Myers: Romanticized melancholy works beautifully in dance music. I want to cry in a club to this. [9]
David Moore: Just when I start to have a handle on some of the formal characteristics of South African dance music, it evolves again into 3-step. Thakzin describes adapting his AfroTech sound, broadly popular with international audiences, to South African audiences during the amapiano zeitgeist and hitting on a novel formula that involves a three-beat pattern. Anyway, that's as best as I can understand or describe it. Dlala Thukzin -- not to be confused with Thakzin (as the interviewer in the clip above jokes, but you should absolutely listen to Thakzin, too) -- created a wildly popular take on this sound, which ruled the South African charts for months starting in September. [8]
Nortey Dowuona: Zaba was hijacked, injured one of the robbers and escaped with his hand stabbed in June of this year. 3 months later this song goes number 1 on the Official South African Charts. Somebody was praying for that fool. [10]
Will Adams: Over the course of my dilettantish experience with amapiano, I've come to expect a few qualities: a) impossibly gorgeous; b) a luxurious slow build that carries the risk of; c) never fully reaching a destination. "iPlan" possesses all three, but has a bit more of Column C than usual, which keeps it at a mild distance. The low-mixed vocals might be to blame. [6]
Brad Shoup: I love how pensive this is, how Dlala Thukzin submerges the vocals until they're barely visible from the surface. It resists any easy soar the whole way through: a fantastic transition track, I'd imagine. [8]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Less a song, more a full night on the dancefloor compressed into six minutes -- some artists' entire careers have fewer moments of transcendental jubilation than "iPlan." There's this tea kettle noise that Dlala Thukzin works in the second time Zaba & Sykes go through that chorus that feels like ascension -- and then the song keeps going for three more minutes! [9]
Frank Kogan: Halfway through a People's Pop Poll, when we've finally gotten through the quallies and into Round One, Tom will grab a sentence from every track's YouTube comments and tweet out four of them at a time, one for each track in a heat. Often he'll find comments that are hilariously obtuse, though sometimes they're poignant and evocative. Anyhow, for Emma Bunton's "Free Me" (you probably knew Emma as "Baby Spice") the YouTube comment that Tom lifted was, "It's very soothing and edgy." I stared at this for a minute's worth of nervous self-recognition and then tweeted back, "'It's very soothing and edgy' are what half my reviews come down to." So "iPlan" is cutting up beats in a way that pushes beyond amapiano but is also digging back into late '10s gqom, which is edgier and more driving and more gripping hence more soothing than amapiano, so's the same 90% overlap you get in amapiano's typical soothing-edgy Venn Diagram, but with a bigger circle. Is about dogged determination, is about gliding dance moves across shards of glass, dark beauty, sharp beats. [9]

Supernatural Characters That I Liked :D
On 2nd April 2023, we finished watching all 15 seasons of Supernatural. My history with this show is that I didn't really know it was a thing while it was popular and then by the time I joined Tumblr it was "that series people on Tumblr like that I don't think would be for me". Up until late 2021, the only things from Supernatural that I'd seen were the Destiel Confession (TM), a short scene of Dean telling Sam & Jack that Castiel was dead and the montage of Sam dying from the final episode. Beyond that, I genuinely knew nothing about the show But in 2021 (I think?) my housemates and I had finished BBC Merlin and were looking for a new long series to try, which ended up being Supernatural. Our set-up was that Gemba had seen up to Season 12 (and thus had to endure us asking many questions about it), but Amber and I had never seen any of it Now, no one needs me to review Supernatural. Enough other people who know more about it than I do have done that. But it's been a long ride and I wanted to do something to celebrate it. So instead of picking apart the good and the bad, I thought I'd simply make a list of the characters I like. This is not an all-inclusive list, as in over 15 seasons there are bound to be a few fun one-off characters who I'll forget. But I tried to include as many characters as possible Starting off with my beloved - everyone's favourite Supernatural character whose name begins with the letter C...
Tumblr media
...Crowley! (Don't worry, Castiel is also on the list lol)
I cannot understate how much Crowley kept me going with this show. We'd just come off the back of the Trickster dying and I was bummed about that, but then Crowley came along with all his yelling and his bisexual villainy and I was won over immediately. Everything about Mark Sheppard's performance was a delight and all his interactions with the rest of the main cast were so fun. When Crowley ended up on the path from enemy to frenemy to begrudging ally, it never felt like character-derailment at all. Though having said that, I also fully understand and respect Sheppard's choice to leave because he was disappointed with how Crowley was being written - as much as it was a big miss for me to see Crowley go. Crowley is my blorbo for this show He is also incredibly shippable with Sam
Tumblr media
Next up is Sam, Mr. Skrunkly Himself and the greatest shipping bicycle I could ask for Now, some of you who I have talked to about Supernatural might remember me saying that I didn't like Sam, which certainly was true in the earlier seasons. I just feel like in the beginning, Sam's stick-in-the-mud attitude needed a bit longer to bake until he became the absolutely endearing, doe-eyed giant that he would become later on. I also think that Sam becoming a better character ended up lining up quite well with Dean becoming... less of a characters that I could enjoy, so that worked out nicely. I'm sorry that I was a non-believer to start with, Sammy, but I'm 100% a Sam Girl now lol
Tumblr media
You're on tumblr, you know who this is I now definitely understand why this website was so obsessed with Castiel. What could've easily been a throw-away character was turned into a series main-stay and I'm sure that a large part of that was due to the clear love that Misha Collins had for the character and poured into his performance. Every time Castiel was around it was always great and, like a lot of people, my biggest problem with Castiel was that they didn't use him enough. They (probably accidentally) wrote one of the best autistic characters I've seen in a while and also, his Dadstiel scenes with Claire and Jack are one of the few times I've really enjoyed seeing a character take on the role of a parent Castiel is also incredibly shippable with Sam (sorry Destiel shippers, I'm Sastiel through and through)
Tumblr media
Queen of my heart, Rowena! The treatment of female characters in Supernatural is another topic with not a great reputation, but you've got to believe me when I say that Rowena is a brilliant character, one of the best and most-fun female villains. When she was introduced as Crowley's mum, I knew we were in for a great ride and, sure enough, every episode she was in was charming. Ruth Connell really ran with the concept of "vengeful Scottish witch". My fears for Rowena had been that she would be killed off shortly after Crowley's departure, but I was delighted to see that she continued to be a main-stay for most of the show, ending with her destined death scene with Sam, before being triumphantly crowned Queen of Hell Rowena is also incredibly shippable with Sam, though I've also gotta give a shout-out to my short-lived OTP of Rowena x Gabriel
Tumblr media
Speaking of Gabriel, the Trickster was definitely what kept me watching at the start of the series. In the beginning, Supernatural was a bit dry for my taste and he injected that shot of fun into it that it needed to keep me interested. His episodes were few and far between, but just knowing there might be a Trickster episode on the horizon always kept me going until Crowley came along to take the mantle from him. I was glad to see Gabriel return later on, even if I feel like they didn't really use him or play to his strengths quite as much as they did in the early episodes The Trickster is also incredibly shippable with Sam
Tumblr media
The best baby boy, Jack! On paper, the concept of Lucifer's son joining the team felt like a desperate attempt by the writers to show a new, younger audience that they were still hip and relevant, but that ended up not being the case. From the moment Jack appeared, he was wonderful, bringing the same energy as Castiel, but with that child-like optimism attached that would lead to him ultimately saving the day and making a better world for everyone. Seeing the trio raising a son was also brilliant and actually the perfect kind of fanfic-fodder the show needed. My biggest regret for Jack is that he came along after most people stopped caring about the show, so he didn't receive the appreciation I think he deserved
Tumblr media
I actually feel bad that it's taken me so long to get to Bobby, as he's one of my big faves, but in my defence he wasn't in the later seasons very much. Bobby went from being "Guy who tells the brothers where the monster of the week is" to the actual perfect father-figure they deserved. There was a reason why when Dean gets to heaven it was Bobby waiting for him and not John, and it wasn't just because getting Neegan back was probably expensive. Bobby is another underrated autistic icon imo and excellent boyfriend-material for Crowley. Even though I was sad when his time on the show was cut short, he was one of the few characters who I felt was given the right amount of fanfare for his send-off
Tumblr media
Ketch! I love Ketch! He's our fave in this house. After the very dull Darkness season, I had my hopes low and was rolling my eyes when the British Men of Letters were introduced, but then they ended up being so cringe that it cycled back around to being funny again. We would cheer every time Ketch appeared
Tumblr media
Yes, I like Bela and think she was fun in her appearances, you're all just mean about her :(
Tumblr media
This version of Meg specifically was wonderful and top-tier shippable with Castiel. It's no wonder that she was the one they called back to play The Empty all those years later. Meg's flirty banter was the perfect foil for Castiel's serious cluelessness and I would always look forward to scenes with both of them
Tumblr media
I'm gonna be real with you: most of the season-long villains were very hit or miss for me, but Zachariah was one villain who I thought was excellent. It's a shame he was so early on, so I don't remember too much about his specifically, but I do remember enjoying him and how powerful he made the angels feel
Tumblr media
Pamela or, as she was known in our house for a long time, The Woman Who Was Fine About Everything. When Pamela first appears she's like "Two brother? Awesome, let's have a threesome!" ...Then she gets her eyes blasted out. When we next see her, Pamela is totally cool with being blind and is even using it to help her work. ...Then she gets killed off. But when we next see her in the afterlife, wouldn't you know it, she's totally cool with being dead. Even when she later appears as a figment of Dean's imagination, she's fine with that, too. So here's to you, Pamela. Wherever you are, I know you're totally cool with it!
Tumblr media
Kevin Tran and his mum. These two characters are the absolute example of deserving much better from the writing, especially Kevin. At least his mum got some cool scenes when she tried to rescue him, but poor Kevin was basically the Wincester's hostage who then died to give Dean more man pain. Which is a shame, because Kevin was great and I really wish we'd been given more fun scenes with him
Tumblr media
Hannah (Agent Stone version) ...Look, it's Lee Majdoub, the guy who plays Agent Stone in the Sonic Movies! Turns out he had a brief role in Supernatural as one of Hannah's vessels. I wish he'd stuck around, but as a big Sonic fan I'm glad he moved onto other things :')
Tumblr media
Claire Novak - I never expected the kid from Castiel's vessel's old life to come back as a full character later on, but Claire filled the role of the vengeful daughter who grew to respect Castiel so well and I definitely wish we'd seen more of both Claire and her short-lived relationship with Kaia. I also had the exact same Grumpy Cat plushie that Castiel gave to Claire, so I was very endeared by that
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both the original Death and Billie who came after him were excellent! Both very different and strong personalities who filled every scene they were in - when these two appeared, you really knew Dean had to sit up and pay attention, because shit was about to get real
Tumblr media
Another one of my top faves, Eileen! Imagine my surprise when Supernatural of all series introduces one of the very few portrayals of a deaf character I've seen and she ends up becoming a recurring character and love interest to one of the main characters. Eileen was annoyingly killed off-screen, but then they made up for it by having Sam go to such lengths to bring her back. She had an adorable relationship with Sam. ...Then they killed her off again and left us to only assume that she must've been returned to life by Jack, but never actually showed that. Oh well, I will choose to believe that the blurry woman they showed with Sam in his montage in the last episode was Eileen and they got the happy ending they deserved
Tumblr media
Rufus went from having a somewhat subdued first appearance to being Bobby's partner in crime and that was when he really shined. Another character who was killed off far too early, wasting his potential, but I enjoyed the few Bobby & Rufus episodes that we did get
Tumblr media
Garth was just a nice guy and I wanted good things for him. After his short, but successful, role as The New Bobby, I'm glad that Garth was able to retire and live with his werewolf family without becoming yet another victim of characters dying by association with the Winchesters
Tumblr media
Becky went from being a very fun nod-to-the-fandom character to having that... one very uncomfortable episode with Sam... to disappearing for a long time and finally coming back to be shown living her best life with her family and thriving. Screw Chuck for killing her off, but I choose to believe that she came back
Tumblr media
Crowley having a son who was brought to modern day from ye olde Scotland and then let loose into a park somewhere will never not be funny to me. I liked Gavin for the few episodes he was in
...And I'm bored of looking for screenshots now, so I'll cap this off by also giving a shout-out to fan-fave, Charlie, who they once again killed off before they should've done but at least had some good episodes, Balthazar, who was the idea friend for Castiel and gave me big Dionysus Hades Game vibes, Metatron, who really grew on my from his initial introduction as villain to reluctant frenemy, and to Chuck, who was a character who really annoyed me for most of the series, but then once they started playing him as a straight up villain it felt like he was the perfect way to sing the series out. Amara also got a lot better in later seasons from her unfortunate first appearance and it was a shame about her hand-wave ending I have mixed feelings about Dean. Goodnight

it was mid 2021, the pair were celebrating their anniversary in Camping Les Prairies De La Mer, France.
chris was such a sucker for love, especially with you.
always starting at you in complete love, always finding a way to hold onto you, finding way to include you or link about anything back to you!
y/n was going to get some more delicious sugar cover freshly baked donuts with ice cream dipped in melted belgium chocolate.
chris didn’t even notice as first where y/n.
thought she was off into the sea… to surf again.
if chris knew how to surf, he would non-stop have his hands glued onto y/n waist🤭
10 minutes passed, y/n was walking back in a hurry.
trying to get back before the ice creams were just empty wooden sticks…
chris was of course in his own world, thinking of you were both going to do in the next few minutes, or what you mind was running away to.
chris was distracted by ruffling his large even tanned fingers, rummaging through any pieces of dirt, clumps or debris of all sort.
keeping his mind in a calm way.
he saw you running back, he quickly ruffled the sand again.
saving himself out of embarrassment, he’s was a little shy<3
beautifully designed the way he carved your name into the sand, exclamation point at the end, surrounding you name with poorly drawn hearts…
that seem to look like they’ve been drawn by a 5 yr old, but heyho!
“thanks honey, how was the trip?”
“ofc sweetheart! one freshly back sugar-covered donut along withhhh, one large belgium chocolate ice cream!” y/n happily responds with dragging out the the t whole having a massive smile with dimples on her sun kissed skin <3
chris’ respond with a teddy bear hug, no doubts
y/n realizes that there was a letter left carved into the sand, chris didn’t do such a great job hiding after his act…
“what was you doing, while i grabbing our 5th snack of the day mister!?” she spoke with a mysterious tone…
chris was just… frozen. completely frozen
“oh that, uh yeah, i don’t actually know who did thatttt” chris was just digging himself a deeper & deeper & deeper grave at this point…
he caved in, finally.
“yeaaa, i was writing your name into the sand” he replied with a nervous smile, holding his thumbs hoping your wouldn’t find it weird.
“chris, why do you need to be nervous about theses things! it’s cute, i literally adore this small interquit details about. it’s main reason why i married you, you himbo”
y/n softly spoken while rubbing more sun screen onto his back, while drawing random shapes on his largely, muscular back.
he instantly pick you up, engulfing you into a massive smooch onto the lips.
while he ‘accidentally’ spilling the ice cream over you chest.
it’s just so he can put his head in between you breasts…
the playful man he is :)

This woman’s online presence is so fucking weird. I could understand Jess not having Twitter. Weird in 2023 if you’re pretty much under 40 not to, but okay. Not everyone’s cup of tea. Sure. What I don’t understand is miss I’m-A-Serious-Business-Professional not having a LinkedIn. Even if it’s not updated. If her track record is as stated and some verifiable, why not have one? If you pivot and co-own a business, that’s something to be proud of and have it listed. If you need networking as badly as she does, that’s a good place for it.
Privacy isn’t her issue. Her issue is pretty obviously that only having Instagram (that we know of) is best because you can pick and choose what people see, hide things from certain people, archive things…everything she needs to have the persona she does.
The question then becomes how she’s explained this to Jamie. We know it’s because she’s a pathological con artist. But, they got together in early 2021. He had to have asked at some point if she was this great talented manager and owned a second business, why aren’t you promoting your business? Why don’t you wear your brand’s clothes? Why if you manage people that live in New York, do you live in California? It’s a head scratcher that he either never had these questions or was so under her spell in the beginning that he didn’t care.
I suppose there’s like a 1% chance her businesses are legitimate. Honestly at this point with what seems like a defunct management business and Ice Studios which is a joke, I think she has an OnlyFans.
Any number of people would see tattoos and a wannabe goth “witch queen” thing and pay for something. What that something is? Don’t know. Could be tame, could not be. Her lifestyle (her plastic surgery alone) takes upkeep. You’d be surprised what people do for money. Hell, it wouldn’t surprise me if she’s a sugar baby. I’d be so curious to know if either of those theories are legit. It’d make sense.
You make very good points here. I also wanted to add if she has an OnlyFans (which I wouldn’t put past her) not only is there goth/tattoo appeal but very sadly there is ED fetish content. The more emaciated and skeletal she looks the more those people would get off on it. She may get off on it too as it’s clearly something she’s worked very hard on achieving.
If her business was legitimate (at least Ice Studios) and successful, trust me, we’d have heard of it before Jess and not only because of Jess. Maybe it’s making just enough money to keep it out of the red but it’s not making millions. Pull 100 people off the street and ask them if they’ve heard of this brand. A thousand. Two thousand. You are guaranteed to starve to death before you find a person who knows this brand without googling it first. I’d bet my life savings on that.
As for her “management” company, if she had high profile clients of any type she’d be way too busy to be following Jamie around or yanking him on Snowboarding trips just for Instagram clout. She wouldn’t be able to follow him to all these conventions and she wouldn’t have time for those stupid baking videos (or care to make them). We’d also see her with other celebrities doing something. Someone of note would mention her. She’d wouldn’t be ignored by everyone she tags on IG. I mean could she be making just enough money, barely, to keep both businesses from bankruptcy? Yes. She’s 100% not successful or wealthy from it.
Something is going on with this woman and she’s hidden it very well. She doesn’t even seem to care that the Ice Shop is down and has been down for days. No one at Ice seems to care. How well well fan that brand be doing if they can’t even be arsed to put up a note about their broken down scam site? I don’t know how she got Jamie so blind to all of this long enough to trap him in the cage she has him in now but whatever she did it was probably awful and this whole situation seems like a nightmare for him.

Why I’m not interested in the WhatsOnStage Awards
Tumblr media
This year marks the 23rd annual WhatsOnStage Awards – the ceremony celebrating theatre up and down the country, as voted for and nominated by the public. I love a good reason to get together, dress up and have a laugh, but I won’t be taking part.
And this isn’t to take anything from the fantastic people and productions that are eligible or have won in the past. It’s simply my opinion as a fan of underrated shows and performers.
The awards cover a range of categories with production awards such as West End, Off-West End, Concerts but also performance awards for Best Takeover (i.e. new cast members in an already running show), and Professional Debut.
On the whole, the awards mean well and they include the all important fans where other awards are nominated and selected by an elite few. But there are just a few things that, for me, make me uninterested in the WhatsOnStage Awards.
The Eligibility Criteria
Generally, to be eligible for a nomination, the production, and therefore the performers, need to have begun between 26 November 2021 and 22 November 2022. But there are categories for long running shows such as Best West End Musical.
My first thought here regarding the dates is that the major history-making West End musical The Drifters Girl is not eligible this year, as it began previews in early November last year and shut in October this year. This meant it only a handful of weeks to get nominations in last year, vs shows that typically would’ve had nearly a year to garner a following. And since it closed last month, it isn’t eligible for Best West End Show either. And while all awarding bodies will have cut off dates, it seems unfair when it’s fans who have to nominate in.
One thing I do rate is that regional and touring productions are rightly squared up against each other as equals in most categories. With such high quality non-London productions, this seems fair and in my opinion, a more accurate reflection of the talent on display in this country. So this could range from the Great British Bake Off Musical in Cheltenham, to Bonnie and Clyde in the West End.
Even some performers themselves don't know if they're eligible, which seems to be an unfair skew towards people who do know.
And that’s what causes, in my opinion, the largest downfall of the awards.
Tumblr media
The Nomination Process
Every year the WOS Awards occur, we get a flurry of performers and productions who rightly want to be nominated. And what an honour it must be to be nominated and even win an award where it’s come from the people. But these performers and productions shouldn’t have to ask to be nominated. Not least because some of the greatest performers don’t use social media which is WOS’ biggest communication channel, but the awards should naturally have a longlist of eligible performers and productions prepared, surely!
With regards to performer categories, some performers themselves seem unsure if they’re even eligible. And if they’re pushing for us to nominate them, and it turns out they’re not eligible, it seems deeply unfair on those who are eligible getting a reduced amount of nominations – particularly as you can only nominate one per category (more on that later…).
As it’s such muddied waters, in my opinion, the only way to clearly and fairly lay out the eligibility criteria is for WhatsOnStage to keep tabs on everything. Perhaps this is simply WOS having a database of everything that’s eligible each year as it opens, closes and performers change. Or maybe it’s WOS approaching the production companies to flag the parameters of eligibility if they would like to put forward their shows and performers. If the awards are something that productions should want to their name, this sounds like the fairest option. Especially as some brilliant shows only have a short run so their fanbase will only stretch so far, vs a long running show.
WOS’ news feed is particularly comprehensive so I’m sure it’s an easier task than retrospectively wading through the nominations to double check their eligibility.
But this is not the only reason I think it’s unfair to pin it on the consumer to nominate.
Fan-nominated and awarded accolades astronomically skew towards social media. It’s almost as if it’s a deep requirement to have a large online presence or celebrity status in order to be deemed a better, or award-worthy actor or creative.
And the nominators don’t even need to have seen the show to nominate – they could be a follower who just happens to like someone or, dare I say, be influenced by someone to nominate forward actors and productions that they haven’t any intention of seeing. And there’s no real way to stop it without WOS keeping a longlist of eligible creatives and productions.
This leaves an unfair shortlist of nominees… which is before we’ve even gotten to the actual award process.
Voting for the awards
Tumblr media
Once the WOS Award shortlist is released, it is another round of asking for votes on social media, where again it feels like a popularity or ‘most followers’ contest. Or they can ask their followers to vote for their friends. While a follower may not actually go ahead and do this, the chances of them doing so are exponentially increased over someone who doesn’t ask.
And that also leaves what I’m coining ‘ghost votes’. I’m sure we’re all guilty of having voted in polls where we have no real association or care with what’s actually being asked, so we therefore vote for what has the most ‘recognisable’ quality.
The WOS Award voting process will always have people with good intentions voting for productions more than worthy of awards… but there will also be categories where you can vote for something you don’t care for. For example, I might want to vote for Bonnie & Clyde in all its categories should it be shortlisted for an award… and then I’ll come across Best New Play. I’ve not seen any new plays this year and yet I’m still able to vote in it, and it’s easy to just select something I’ve heard of rather than something I think is genuinely worthy of that award.
But that gets into weird voter ID territory. When Back to the Future was eligible for the awards earlier this year, they had QR codes projected onto the curtain - perhaps this is a fairer way of asking people to vote.
And while WOS say that they reserve “the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend nominations/voting should there be causes beyond its control corrupt or affect the fairness or proper conduct of the nomination/voting process”, it doesn’t take even a few minutes to see how easily fans like to exploit the awards process by voting more than once (with some even having dubious GDPR implications):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Impact
This is pure speculation, but awards that are voted in this way, to me, don’t hold as much weight as other awards and therefore shouldn’t have industry impact.
It's clear to those who are fans of theatre on Twitter that these are solely fan nominated and fan voted, but I wonder if it's as clear to those who just pop to London and see posters covered in WOS Award accolades. Perhaps that's why WOS renamed the awards from the Theatregoers' Choice Awards.
Awards, on the whole, don't mean a great deal anyway; I'm at peace with the fact the majority of my favourite shows won't win awards for a variety of reasons, but they don't make or break shows like they're known to on Broadway.
I imagine when a fan favourite wins an award, the WOS social media interaction goes through the roof. Even by their own admission, WOS have shared that they operate as an advertiser, and perhaps an awards ceremony which feels like it includes the fans at the most foundation level is their greatest marketing tool. It makes the fans feel included and are able to dictate what is deemed award worthy - and in some way or another, fans will pretty much always dictate what shows stick and what don't.
But perhaps the WOS Awards are a marketing tool for producers. Similar to Musical Con, they prove who the most popular talent in the industry is, and who fans are willing to show up for and even pay money to see (the WOS Awards invite fans to purchase tickets to be in the audience). And you honestly can’t blame them, it’s practically free research that they’d otherwise have to pay thousands for. Producers could therefore angle particular actors to be in their own shows in future to increase ticket sales - it's already known that some casting directors consider who have a large social media following.
So in short, the awards don’t appeal to me because:
The nominations process is dubious as eligibility is vague, pinned on the consumer and the nominations should be held by the awarding body
Despite reflecting the entire UK’s talent-base vs other awards, the nomination and award process are predominantly reliant on asking for votes on social media
Having a dedicated social media shouldn’t be prerequisite for receiving awards
The inability to actually prove you've seen the material shortlisted inflates certain nominees coupled with ability to create multiple accounts to vote
All together, for me, these ruin the integrity of the awards
What do you think?
Have you nominated anyone for a WhatsOnStage Award this year? Will you be voting when the shortlist comes out?

National Pumpkin Day October 26 National Pumpkin Day recognizes a favored autumn decoration and food on October 26th. Not only do they make great fall decorations, but the pumpkin also completes a variety of tasty recipes. Join a pumpkin competition or visit any of the many fall festivals featuring the beautiful gourds.
NationalPumpkinDay
By October 26th, we’re in a frenzy of pumpkin obsession. We cannot wait for the big November holiday for pumpkin pie. No siree, we need pumpkin everything! Bars, cookies, coffee, cheesecake, pasta, and oatmeal. Pumpkin Chunkin’, pumpkin patches, festivals, bake-offs, and television specials. Let’s not forget jack-o-lantern carving, too! This fruit grabs Americans’ attention. As it should! This squash is native to North America. The oldest evidence of pumpkin-related seeds dates back to somewhere between 7000 and 5500 BC to seeds found in Mexico. The word pumpkin originates from the word pepon, which means “large melon” in Greek.
Within recent years, white pumpkins have become more popular in the United States. The United States produces 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins, with Illinois producing more than any other state. In 2021, Italian Stefano Cutrupi claimed the title of the world’s largest pumpkin when his gargantuan gourd weighed in at 2703 pounds (1,226 kg). That’s 300 pounds heavier than the 2014 winner from Switzerland. In 2020, Travis Gienger grew the largest pumpkin in North America. The hefty vegetable weighed in at 2,350 pounds. It eeked out the previous winner, a 2,145-pound pumpkin from Streator, Illinois grown by Gene McMullen. Pumpkins are packed with nutrients, but they’re not only good for humans. Did you know that pumpkin may be recommended by veterinarians as a dietary supplement for dogs and cats? Since pumpkin is easy to digest, if your pet is experiencing certain digestive ailments, don’t be surprised if your vet says to give them pumpkin puree. Poultry also benefits from eating raw pumpkin as a supplement to their regular feed during the winter months to help maintain egg production. As a seasonal food, it sure comes at the right time of year. Since it’s packed with vitamin C, it can boost your immune system to fight off those nasty colds, too. HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PUMPKIN DAY Ah, pumpkins! They bring to mind wonderful memories and inspire us to artistry. Whether we frame the perfect photo at the local pumpkin patch, carve up the scariest jack-o-lantern or whip up the tastiest batch of pumpkin bars, this is a holiday worth sharing. Roast some pumpkin seeds while the family rakes up those fall leaves. Pour a mug of hot apple cider and bake up your favorite pumpkin recipes, too. Or try a new one. We offer several for you to try! As always, invite someone to Celebrate Every Day® with you, too. Pumpkin Lasagna Savory Pumpkin Raviolo Debbie’s Pumpkin Bars Pumpkin Pudding Use #NationalPumpkinDay to post on social media. NATIONAL PUMPKIN DAY HISTORY National Day Calendar® continues researching the origins of this garden squash-related holiday.
Pumpkin FAQ Q. Who carved the first jack-o-lantern? A. The tradition of carving vegetables for Halloween has its beginning in Ireland. There, they carved turnips to ward off the devil and evil spirits during the ancient festival of Samhain, also during Halloween. Irish who immigrated to the Americas brought the tradition with them and found the pumpkin suitable for carving. However, carving pumpkins in Ireland has become a more modern practice.
