“The Jewel Of The Nile” makes better choices than the first movie, but has absolutely horrible pacing.

Joan and Jack have been traveling around the world on Jack’s new boat for the past few months. Joan is starting to feel like happily ever after isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. One day, Joan is approached by an Arab ruler named Omar Khalifa who wants her to write his biography. She accepts and goes with him while Jack decides to continue traveling the world. Jack is then approached by a local who claims Omar isn’t who he claims to be.

I was hesitant to watch this movie because I have a lot of catching up to do with the movies in theaters right now. Still, I decided I was going to watch it because I promised to do so in my last review. When this movie started, I was starting to feel better about my decision because there were a lot of interesting ideas that were introduced. Joan was established to be a hopeless romantic while Jack was established to be romantically dense in the last movie. The next logical step is to show how their happily ever after isn’t as glamourous as they thought it would be. Jack finally has the boat he’s always wanted and is failing to see that Joan’s patience is wearing thin. Now’s the perfect time to introduce someone new that’ll force Jack to start paying attention. Meanwhile, we got Danny DeVito with a more prominent role in this movie. I was in for the ride... until the ride started cruising. A huge bulk of the middle of this movie has the same problem as the first movie, but worse. It sticks to plots that aren’t super engaging for way too long. On top of that, the villains are dumber this time around. They’re not even subtle about their bad intentions. I mean, they’re discussing their evil plans out in public where Joan can hear them. Meanwhile, Jack is being super dumb and treating Joan cruelly. It’s enough to make me question whether I should be rooting for them. The whole movie revolves around Jack and Joan getting Al-Julhara to safety, but the movie never bothers to give a conclusion with the three because the movie is more interested in pushing the lackluster romance between Jack and Joan. I see now why this movie isn’t as talked about as other famous movies from the 80′s. I’m pretty sure I’ll be forgetting all about these movies in the next few weeks and never talking about them again.
