In 1931, the arrival of a man claiming to be named Albert Johnson stirred intrigue in the secluded town of Fort McPherson, Canada. Setting up a solitary cabin near the Rat River, he ventured into the life of a trapper, seemingly embracing the solitude of the wilderness. However, suspicions arose when fellow trappers accused Johnson of sabotaging their traps, prompting the authorities to investigate.
As they approached Johnson's remote abode with a search warrant, shots pierced through the wooden door, instigating a fierce exchange of gunfire. Johnson skillfully held off the authorities, confining himself within the cabin for nine tense days.
Yet, on New Year's Eve, an RCMP posse arrived, determined to bring him to justice. What ensued was a harrowing 15-hour standoff in subzero temperatures, defined by the desperate use of dynamite to decimate the cabin. To their astonishment, the authorities discovered Johnson standing amidst the wreckage, armed with dual firearms that he unleashed upon them before swiftly vanishing into the nearby woods.
Intrigue escalated as news of the relentless manhunt spread across the nation, capturing the public's imagination. The media christened him "The Mad Trapper of Rat River," bewildered by his exceptional survival skills amid extreme weather conditions and two treacherous blizzards. It became evident that Johnson was no ordinary trapper; his abilities defied comprehension.
On the 30th of January, 1932, the RCMP finally closed in on Johnson near the frozen expanse of Eagle River. A deadly firefight ensued, culminating in his demise as nine bullets pierced his body. In a peculiar twist, the revelation followed that Albert Johnson was not his true identity.
Despite tireless efforts to uncover his real name, the enigma of his origins remained shrouded in mystery.

"Planning to Drop Dynamite Bombs On Trapper’s Lair,” Ottawa Journal. February 3, 1932. Page 7. ---- Arms and Ammunition Being Bushed to Forrce Attempting to Capture Slayer of Mountie ---- Canadian Press by Direct Wire. EDMONTON, Alt. Feb. 2-A war- hero of the air is to join Canada's Mounted Police in a spectacular attempt to capture the mad murderer of a "Mountie" in the barrens of the Arctic Circle. Captain Wop May, noted Northland flyer, is to pilot a plane carrying dynamite bombs and one constable of the R.C.M.P. the lair from which Albert Johnson. crazed trapper, has resisted arrest by a police posse.
Ammunition and provision for the force which has been seeking the hermit of Rat River since he shot to death Constable E. Millen last Saturday, will be rushed immediately to McMuray. end-of-steel, 250 miles north of Edmonton. Pilot C. H. (Punch) Dickens, one of the ablest of barren-land airman, will hop off for the North tomorrow morning.
Flying Own Plane From McMurray, Capt. May will leave at once in his own plane with the transferred supplies, on the 1,500- mile flight to Aklavik, about 60 miles south of Canada’s Arctic shore.
Inspector E. A. Eames of ‘G’ Division, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Arctic patrol, will direct the bombing, according to official word given out  here today. Dynamite bombs, already used in a vain attempt, to rout Johnson from the snow-bound cabin from which ha later vanished, will be fashioned at Aklavik for the aerial attack.
A trapper army, summoned from the area surrounding Aklavik by a radio appeal. Is gathering for a concerted attack on the little stronghold where Johnson is now believed trapped by three guarding Mounties. It was in a rush by police on that semi-circular parapet that Constable Millen dropped fatally wounded by the gun of the crazed trapper.
Believed Cornered Johnson is believed surrounded in the bleak hill country 30 miles up the Rat river from Arctic Red river, about 60 miles south of Aklavik. He was cornered after he had fled torn his cabin near Arctic Red river, which had been besieged for 15 hours by Mounties in 50-below zero weather. Johnson disappeared when the police were forced to return to headquarters for supplies and to avoid death by , freezing.
First move against the lone trapper, who came to Arctic Red river from the Yukon last fall with his pocket bulging with gold, came on the complaint of Indians that their traps were being stolen. Constable A. W. King. of Ottawa, was wounded by Johnson as he advanced to the door of the isolated hut. After King was rushed by dog-team to Aklavik, patrols of Mounties returned to his cabin, set siege to it and then were forced to withdraw by hunger and cold.

“Life in the frigid temperatures and untamed wilderness of Canada's Northwest Territories, especially in the 1930s - a time when things like "propane heating" and "not getting eaten by bears" were unheard-of luxuries - was pretty much a miserable experience for anyone who didn't enjoy freezing their nuts off and/or being forcibly kicked in the abdomen by a bunch of angry moose.  Survival in this hostile, almost-inhabitable environment was far from guaranteed, making the foolhardy venture of frontier life one that was generally only undertaken by those who possessed an iron will, a hardy constitution, a modest arsenal of kill-crazy weapons, and a tenuous grip on their own sanity.  Unfortunately for the officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the man known only as Albert Johnson, the infamous "Mad Trapper of Rat River" possessed all of these things and more.Albert moved to the Northwest Territories for some strange reason in July of 1931, and immediately went to work being a total jackass and pissing everyone off with his crazy antics.  Living by himself in a log cabin he probably built out of wood he harvested with little more than a series of devastating karate chops and operating a small series of traps on the Rat River, he lived the lonely life of an eccentric badass frontier mountain man – hunting for food, selling animal pelts, fucking with the natives, and generally rocking out like a Depression-Era Unabomber.”

In 1931, a mysterious man of approximately 35-years-old arrived in Fort McPherson, Canada, claiming his name was Albert Johnson. He built a cabin in a remote location near the Rat River and began to make a living as a trapper. Later on in the year, other local trappers began to complain to the authorities that Johnson was sabotaging their traps. The authorities decided they would investigate this report and made their way to the secluded cabin; they weren’t expecting the relentless violence that would follow.
As the authorities arrived with a search warrant, Johnson shot through the wooden door and an almighty firefight ensued. Johnson kept the authorities at bay and remained inside his cabin for the next nine days, when an RCMP posse arrived to apprehend him on New Year’s Eve. A 15-hour standoff in below-freezing weather then took place. The RCMP used dynamite to blow the cabin up and upon entering to remove what they assumed would be his corpse, they were more than shocked to find Johnson still miraculously alive. He was standing among the wreckage, armed with two guns that he immediately began to fire, before escaping into the woods nearby the cabin.
On 30 January, 1932, authorities managed to catch up with Johnson, who shot and killed Constable Edgar Millen, before escaping once again. He crossed the Richardson Mountains in the middle of a blizzard and entered Yukon Territory. The news of this extreme manhunt had made it’s way into the media who dubbed him “The Mad Trapper of Rat River.” People were mystified as to how this man could have survived for so long in near 50 below zero weather and two extreme blizzards. It was evident that he wasn’t just your average trapper, that’s for sure.
On 17 February, the RCMP finally tracked Johnson down at the frozen Eagle River, where he was eventually killed with 9 bullets to the body in a firefight. Bizarrely, following his death it was revealed that Albert Johnson was not his real name. Despite numerous attempts to discover his true identity, he still remains unidentified.

“DEMENTED TRAPPER KILLS CONSTABLE,” Kingston Whig-Standard. February 1 1932. Page 10. ---- Man Was Fleeing From-His Blown-up Cabin in the Arctic ---- EDMONTON, Feb. 1— Constable E. Millien was shot and killed by Albert Johnson, demented trapper, at a point 30 miles up the Rat River Saturday.
Details of the shooting reached Edmonton last night. It was reported to Aklavik by a portable radio with the patrol and the word then flashed to the city.
The killing occurred in the rolling barrens of the upper Rat River about 30 miles from where the stream flows into the rushing Mackenzie, according to the meagre radio report, apparently Johnson was fleeing westward from his dynamite-shattered cabin to the Yukon boundary about 100 miles distant .A journey of another 100 miles across the northern tip of the Yukon would take him into Alaska, United States territory.
