Romance Dawn ver. II

Years ago, i wrote about a romance manga that i absolutely adore called Yancha Gal no Anjou-san, or The Mischievous Gal Anjou-san for us Yanks. I’ve been following this thing since it launched way back in 2017 and have been hooked ever since. Anjou-san came out around the same time as all of these school life, romance comedies where the lead is consistently teased by the heroine. Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san, Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!, and Amano Megumi wa Sukidarake!, all feel like they came out around the same time and all of them have received anime adaptions. Anjou has yet to grace the small screen with her cat-like mischievousness but, like the rest of these manga I've listed above, her protagonist, Seto, has finally confessed his feelings for her and OH MY GOD!

I had no idea i was so invested in these characters. I knew that, in passing, i really liked the world Katou Yuuichi has created. Coming from a web comic to this, isn’t something that is so rare nowadays. Overlord, Jujetsu Kaisen, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, and Tower of God all started are all personal favorites and have similar, grass roots origins. I actually really, really, like Slime and Overlord. Hell, even Nagatoro-san started as a web comic but to see how far Anjou-san has come is really something special. I was rooting so hard for Seto to finally speak his truth. As noted above, a lot of the protagonists from around that time have already made their move. Seto was the last hold out and the one i was rooting for the hardest. Watching him slowly realize his feelings are more than platonic, finally accepting he wants Anjou all to himself, and directly telling her in the latest chapter, was absolutely everything!

I’m a bit wary of this revelation as, after the confession, there’s not much steam left in the romance genre. Amano has ended with their pairing as strong as ever in college. Nagatoro has a lot on the line going forward and that trajectory looks like a finale arc. Uzaki-chan is all over the place so i don’t know what the f*ck is going on in that one but I'm intrigued if it will go out strong like Erased or stumble at the finish line after being forced to artificially prolapse it’s narrative like BLEACH. I don’t want Anjou-san to meet that type of sordid fate. Intellectually, i want this thing to have that happy end. I Want to see a world where Anjou and Seto finally become an item. I want to know to know how that relationship evolves. I want those two to be happy. If this is the last arc of Yancha Gal no Anjou-san, it’s gong to be bitter sweet. I’ve been on this ride for almost five years and i don’t want to say goodbye to it just yet. Still, i know it has to end and i hope it ends well. If chapter 114 is a barometer for that eventual climax, i think I'll be happy with what we will get.
