The Paradise (s1e8) / Emun Elliott as John Moray

This show takes place sometime in the 1870s. What Moray wears is recognizable even today as morning dress, but was a newish style at the time. Apparently, those who could afford to own riding horses used to exercise their horses in the morning, and the morning coat was developed to look elegant on horseback; the bottom half is cut so as to sweep back smoothly and not leave any fabric hanging over the rider's knees.

With his traditional morning coat, striped trousers, and top hat, Moray wears an ivory brocade waistcoat with gold chain, dove-grey gloves, and a very interesting olive-and-turquoise ascot fastened with a jeweled pin. For boutonniere, he has a spray of ... crocus, I think? (ETA: Or possibly tuberoses--see comments.)

Finished both seasons of The Paradise, thanks to Arte, where a ton of British series can be found at the moment. I somehow managed to never watch it before and well, it was good but slightly annoying by moments and apart from Dudley, I couldn't actually like most characters... Next!

May: Purple Redux

The Paradise (s1e8) / Elaine Cassidy as Katherine Glendenning

Katherine wears white with touches of other colors throughout season 1, so when she shows up in the season finale in this deep purple, it's clear that Something Has Changed. A lot of the purple dresses in period pieces are half-mourning, but this is just for pure dramatic effect.

It's a real shame we don't get a full-length view of the outfit, but at least we get a long, slow pan showing many of the details, like the circular designs and fringes on the skirt.

The best view, however, is in the outdoor shot--I'm pretty sure it's a publicity shot and not from the show itself--where the shade of purple changes fairly dramatically in different light. The "striped" effect on the jacket is very interesting, and it's our best view of the hat. That fringed muff is amazing too!
