hiiii. i'm always interested in more f/f films. i see u mentioned The Summer of Sangaile. i guess i'm just curious, does it have a happy ending? or maybe just not a tragic one. thank u :)
I would not recommend a wlw film without a happy ending without explaining! (And, honestly, I probably just wouldn't recommend... I'm looking at you, that random British Indie version of Carmilla that did bury your gays, but I still like it as a film). This film does a pretty accurate job of depicting teen angst, so it's painful in that way. But that pain is contrasted with queer love in this film, not a source. I recommend checking out the documentary Fly Like A Girl before this film, if you can.

Sangailes vasara (The Summer of Sangaile) (Alante Kavaite, 2015)
I just watched this for the second time this week. The first time I watched it was in the month following a very painful breakup and when watching a staggering number of movies was the only thing keeping me afloat. I definitely had big and contradictory emotions about this movie since then, in addition to not really remembering it very clearly. But it has stayed with me in a nicely haunting way, and I was happy (and sad) to watch it again.
Like a lot of eastern European storytelling, this (Lithuanian) film ends up feeling incredibly sad to me. But it’s a sad story, so how else could I feel? Sangaile and Auste have a beautiful time together that offers them both long-lasting enrichment. And one can’t really ask for more than that from any relationship. But their parting at the end bums me out. It IS a story of young love, and those stories are almost always intense, fleeting, and hard to get over. It’s realistic that they had a literal and emotional summer together and were good to each other in a way that will glow as they go forward in their lives. But the longing way that Auste looks at Sangaile in those last scenes is too sad.
This is a good film.

Note
I watched The Summer of Sangaile in 2017 and it blew me away. I found a spanish subtitled version (Im from mexico) and devoured it.
Its such a simple, poignant, stunning film that is most likely overlooked because its lack of distribution budget. But its so worth it!
Im glad you enjoyed it so much 😊
I hope folks find this one! I scour the earth for wlw films that don't write the dreaded tropes. And I had never heard of this one! I wonder if the Indie film scene in the USA was behind the curve of international. The Ebert review is negative, and I am like, this is such a bad take in every way. I don't see that happening today.
