Top 10 Marvel Heroes I Want to See Get Video Games
On Friday September 9th, we’ll have seen the first ever Disney & Marvel Games Showcase! I know everyone probably has their own set of expectations and hopes for what they will see there, but for me, the biggest draw is that we will finally get to see Amy Hennig’s highly anticipated Marvel title! In anticipation of this, I thought it would be fun to make a list of the ten Marvel heroes I would love to see get a big-budget story-driven AAA video game.
Before we begin, this is just a wishlist of characters I want to see lead their own game. It is not meant to be a prediction of what we will se on Friday (though in the unlikely event that one of these games IS the big reveal, I will be insufferable to be around for years). As such, it will not include characters we know are already getting games (Wolverine), or characters who are strongly rumored to have games in development (Black Panther, Iron Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and Ant-Man (the latter three being the front-runners for what Amy’s game will probably be)). And also, no character who have received games in which they were the primary protagonist in the last ten years (team games like Ultimate Alliance don’t count). With that out of the way, let’s dig in.
10. The Hulk
The only reason I am rating this one as low as I am is because even though it’s older than 10 years old, the perfect Hulk game already exists. Released in 2005, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was an open-world action game that gave you full control of the Hulk’s nearly limitless destructive potential. You could leap forty feet into the air, run up the sides of buildings, and of course, unleash Ultimate Destruction upon your enemies with the ability to weaponize nearly every object you could get your hands on. Everything you’ve ever fantasized about doing as the Hulk, this game let you do. However, because it’s been so long, and because the Hulk is absolutely a character in need of a modern story-based AAA title, I’m throwing him on here.
9. Black Cat
This one is also low only because it would be similar to an existing game, but I can’t be the only one who played The Heist DLC of Spider-Man (PS4) and wondered what the game would feel like played from Felicia’s perspective. While the open world and stealth might have similarities to Spidey’s gameplay, Black Cat would probably have a different fighting style, a whole new suite of gadgets, and most obvious of all, a different goal. Instead of saving New York from destruction, you’d be robbing its rich and powerful blind. While Spider-Man had addicting and engaging minigames and sidequests about science, Black Cat’s would be all about lockpicking, safecracking, and casing potential targets. We’ve played thief-centric games before, but the idea of one set in the Marvel universe would certainly set Black Cat apart. And considering the extensive network of criminals and corrupt businessmen in Marvel’s version of New York, there is plenty of material for a rich and exciting Black Cat story packed with fun gameplay.
8. Blade
Okay, this one actually was rumored for a while, but those rumors were recently dispelled so its safe. Blade is a character who feels like he was tailor made for a video game, with his cool sword, arsenal of weapons and gadgets, vampire-like powers, and his penchant for picking fights with creatures of the night. Not only that, but the horror side of Marvel is something that hasn’t been explored much outside of comics for a while now, so this would be a whole untapped side of the Marvel Universe to bring to gamers. Whether its as a Devil May Cry styled action game, or an Assassin’s Creed-like open world adventure, a Blade game would be a welcome entry in the collections of Marvel fans.
7. Thor
That one poor attempt of a movie tie-in game aside, I am honestly flabbergasted that there hasn’t been a Thor-centric video game before now. While Norse Mythology isn’t exactly a novel concept in regards to video games, Thor has the unique advantage of being able to tie mythological narratives to a contemporary setting with his ability to enter our world. And then there’s the obvious appeal of fighting bad guys with a mix of brutal hammer strikes and Asgardian thunder magic. With familiar enemies from mythology coupled with Thor’s lesser-known Earthbound nemeses like The Wrecking Crew and Radioactive Man (no, not the one from the Simpsons), a Thor game would give players plenty to do.
6. Doctor Strange
When someone thinks about the mystic side of the Marvel universe, Doctor Strange is probably going to be the first character who springs to mind. Whenever a magical threat threatens the safety of our universe, the good doctor is never far away. A Doctor Strange game, like a Blade game, would allow players to enter a relatively untapped area of the Marvel universe. And with Strange’s myriad of magical abilities at player’s disposal, its easy to imagine exciting gameplay to match the story. While I initially balked at the prospect of a Doctor Strange game because of the sheer overwhelming breadth of his available powers, seeing recent gameplay footage of Forspoken (just the gameplay, mind you) set my mind at ease that a real-time action game can certainly handle a wide range of magical abilities.
5. She-Hulk
Now I know I already mentioned the Hulk, but I think we all know Jennifer Walters is more than just a female version of her cousin. While She-Hulk is just as strong as the Hulk, her increased intelligence means her fighting style is already different enough to justify having her own game. And that’s before taking into account the biggest potential draw of a She-Hulk game: her profession. Not only is She-Hulk an amazing hero in her own right, but she’s also a lawyer. And instead of using that as window-dressing for the plot, I see no reason not to incorporate it into the gameplay. After all, gamers are no strangers to games about the courtroom as evidenced by the popular Ace Attorney series. A game that combines tense legal battles with thrilling superhero battles would certainly set this game apart from other offerings in the superhero game sphere.
4. Daughters of the Dragon
As far as I’m concerned, the only downside to making a game about these characters is that there will be a lot of hate comments from people who have no idea who they are. And to be fair, if Marvel were to make a Heroes for Hire game and add Luke Cage and Iron Fist, I would 100% buy it, play it, and love it. But what I really want is a game starring Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. I’m imagining a gameplay experience similar to the Judgment series, combining private detective intrigue and investigation with the kind of over-the-top superpowered action we expect from Marvel. I would love to play a game combining these two genres, and I can think of fewer heroes better suited to brining it to light than these tragically underrated heroes.
3. Moon Knight
With Moon Knight having both an excellent run in the comics currently and an excellent Disney+ series, it’s been a very good time to be a Moon Knight fan, and the fist of Khonshu is well overdue for a video game. Moon Knight is the kind of character I would love to play a game about, as the hero is just as at home beating up a mugger as he is beating up an unspeakably horrifying monster summoned from the depths of my darkest nightmares, meaning neither the gameplay or story will ever feel boring. Not only that, but his ties to Egyptian mythology as well as his fractured psyche would both equally lend themselves to both thrilling stories and incredible playable set-pieces.
2. Silver Surfer
Okay, I’m kind of cheating here because the type of game I’m envisioning here could be about a number of different Marvel heroes, mainly Captain Marvel or Nova. However, I’m settling on Silver Surfer because he has been a character I’ve loved since I was a kid, and I feel he’s fallen out of focus in recent times. Anyway, the Guardians of the Galaxy game defied expectations by being an excellent game that showed off the cosmic side of the Marvel universe. However, it did so with linear, level-based gameplay. And although I enjoyed that gameplay and felt it served both the story and characters very well, I would love to see the sci-fi side of Marvel explored through an open-galaxy lens, and I feel the Silver Surfer is the character best suited to do that. Imagine zipping freely through the cold reaches of space, coming to a planet, fulfilling whatever quest brought you there, then flying off to another planet with new environments, characters and storylines. That’s the kind of adventure my Silver Surfer-loving younger self dreamed of, and I would love to play a game that brings that to life.
1. Ghost Rider
Alright folks. Here is the big one. The game I would probably sell my soul to play, and what I am secretly hoping Insomniac is working on after Wolverine. After sinking I-won’t-admit-how-many-hours into exploring Spider-Man (PS4)’s outstanding open world, I realized I want to do the same with Ghost Rider. I want to ride my flaming motorcycle through the city streets and up the side of a building. I want to ride from rooftop to rooftop before coming back down to the street like a meteor. I want to slam my ride into the middle of a group of enemies who were just seconds ago completely oblivious to just how bad their night was going to go. I then want to dismount my bike, take out a flaming chain, and unleash horrible, horrible vengeance upon the very unfortunate mooks who survived my deadly bike-drop. I want to do all of that very very much.
And there we have it! I’m sorry if your favorite character wasn’t mentioned, but let me be clear: there isn’t a single Marvel superhero I wouldn’t love to see star in a lovingly-crafted video game with an amazing story (consider Cap my honorable mention!). These are just the ten I reluctantly managed to force myself to separate from that crowd.
Do you agree or disagree with anything on this list? Are there any heroes you’ve been dreaming of playing as in a big AAA game? Please feel free to comment or reblog with your opinions down below!

Character Actor
Anthony Caruso (April 7, 1916 – April 4, 2003) Film and television character actor in more than one hundred American films, usually playing villains and gangsters, including the first season of Walt Disney's Zorro as Captain Juan Ortega.
In some of his television roles, Caruso played sympathetic characters, like "Ash", on an early episode of CBS's Gunsmoke, and again in 1960 as “Gurney”, a murdering, yet ultimately sympathetic cowboy. He also played “Lone Wolf” in a 1961 episode entitled “Indian Ford”.
In 1954, Caruso played Tiburcio Vásquez in an episode of the western series Stories of the Century. He appeared in the first Brian Keith series, Crusader.  In 1957, he appeared in the fourth episode of the first season of the TV western Have Gun – Will Travel starring Richard Boone titled "The Winchester Quarantine".
In 1957, Caruso appeared in episode "The Child" on NBC's The Restless Gun.  In 1959, he was cast as George Bradley in the episode "Annie's Old Beau" on the NBC children's western series, Buckskin.
That same year, he portrayed Matt Cleary on CBS's Wanted: Dead or Alive episode "The Littlest Client", with Steve McQueen. Also 1959, he also guest-starred on the ABC/Warner Brothers western series, Sugarfoot, in the episode "The Extra Hand", along with guest stars Karl Swenson and Jack Lambert as well as the series star, Will Hutchins. The same year he appeared in the 'Syndicate Sanctuary' episode of The Untouchables.
In 1960, Caruso played a Cherokee Indian, Chief White Bull, in the episode "The Long Trail" of the NBC western series, Riverboat, starring Darren McGavin.
Also in 1960, he returned to Gunsmoke playing a murderous cowboy named “Gurney” in S6E5’s “Shooting Stopover”. Again his character was a hard man, but through the character’s death, Caruso successfully made him sympathetic.
In 1961, he appeared twice on the ABC/Warner Brothers drama series, The Roaring 20s, including the role of Lucky Lombardi in "The Maestro". He was also cast with Will Hutchins in a second The Roaring 20s episode entitled, "Pie in the Sky." Early in 1961, he was cast as Velde in the episode "Willy's Millionaire" of the short-lived ABC adventure series, The Islanders, with Diane Brewster.
Caruso guest-starred in an episode of the ABC western series, The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, based on a Robert Lewis Taylor novel of the same name. Caruso guest-starred three times on CBS's Perry Mason. In 1962, he played Keith Lombard in "The Case of the Playboy Pugilist." Also in 1962, Caruso played Cody Durham in "Cody's Code" on Gunsmoke. In 1965, he made two Perry Mason appearances, both times as the murder victim: first as title character Enrico Bacio in "The Case of the Sad Sicilian," then as Harvey Rettig in "The Case of the Runaway Racer."
In 1964, he guest-starred in the Bonanza episode "The Saga of Squaw Charlie" playing a Native American man shunned by almost everybody and with only two friends, Ben Cartwright and a little girl named Angela. In 1969 he starred alongside Ricardo Montalban in Desperate Mission, a fictionalized telling of the life of Joaquin Murrieta. From 1966 to 1970 he guest-starred three times on the long-running NBC western The Virginian, starring James Drury. In 1965 he guest-starred on ABC's The Addams Family as Don Xavier Molinas.
Some of his other roles were that of the alien gangster "Bela Oxmyx" in the classic Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action", Chief Blackfish on the NBC series Daniel Boone, and Louis Ciavelli (the "box man" or safecracker) in The Asphalt Jungle. Caruso played the comical character of the Native American "Red Cloud" on the 1965 Get Smart episode "Washington 4, Indians 3," and Chief Angry Bear in the episode "You Can't Scalp a Bald Indian" of Rango.
In 1970, Caruso made a guest appearance on the ABC crime drama The Silent Force in the episode "A Family Tradition." In 1974, he appeared in the final episode, entitled "The Fire Dancer," of the ABC police drama Nakia. Anthony Caruso also had a memorable, recurring roll as “El Lobo” on The High Chaparral.  (Wikipedia)

Telecommunications Safecracking
This is a report on a very important issue that affects millions around the world. This is called telecommunications safecracking. Let's start off by asking ourselves what is telecommunications safecracking? First, we need to start off by saying that telecommunications is not just the use of a telephone. This involves mobile radio and direct satellite systems. This also consists of PDA Systems, Blackberry Technology, as well as any cell phone or mobile device that has a microchip technology. With this microchip technology, it stores information and it also is used to transfer data into a specific source. Do you know that I-Pads and Laptop computers can also be used as a communications device? Computers can also be used to send text messages over the telephone. This is very important because this is another way of communication through the use of text messages and emails as well. A very long time ago, communications was delivered manually and with the words from our own mouths.
It was also delivered through specific writings that were sacred and through means that was important to people. We also have to understand that long before man came into existence, God communicated with the world in a way that is sacred religiously. Adam and Eve communicated with each other and they were the first two people. However, due to the ultimate sin that was committed, God punished both of them, but they had children and the world was populated. I know that this is taking things off track a little bit, but it ties into the subject.
Telecommunications are so sophisticated that it enables people to do so many things. We can also look at things online as well as send a fax message if possible. Online transactions can also be performed as well as sending things that are extremely important such as our pictures. We will now focus on safecracking. What is safecracking? Let's look at the entire history of safecracking to begin with. This is a very serious crime that involves equipment that is used to digest and receive codes. These codes consists of numbers that are translated through methods of clicks by the use of a device called a stet scope. This is a device that a doctor uses to listen to our heartbeats. This is also a device that also listens to activities inside of our arteries that is located inside of the neck.
Next, we are going to put all of this together into a specific major topic. This is something that is really doing on through the uses of electronics. The reason why I am saying this is because I am a victim of it. My cell phone calls were illegally forwarded to an answering machine by a person that is unknown. This person who has committed this crime has done this to millions of people.
Now, I am going to inform you that all of my recent phone calls has been blocked and illegally sent to an answering machine by people who are using wireless computers. There are people that are committing this crime by taking your phone number and sending it to another cell phone. This is also done by people who are taking phone numbers from phone booths and sending the number to their own cell phones as well. This is called telecommunications safecracking because people are getting their cell phones and landline phone numbers infiltrated by criminals each day. This is extremely dangerous!!!!! This has caused millions of people to become extremely angry and outraged worldwide. It has happened to me and it is happening to a whole lot of people and they do not know it.
Solutions
First, call the phone company itself and request for all of your records. Second, make sure that all police reports are filed against all individuals involved and this includes those who you were affiliated with in the past. This also includes those telemarketers who call and request for information from you. Third, this also includes scammers and those who are involved in information technology. Make sure that you are able to manually pick up all of your records from the phone company themselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
Criminals that are responsible
Information Technology Specialist that are involved in law enforcement as well as those who are in Library Information Systems is also criminals themselves. This also includes those individuals who work for telecommunication companies that are doing things illegally just to scam and hurt others. There are many people who are crooked cops that are involved in this sort of issue. These people as well as all corrupt officials need to be apprehended. There are members of elite street enterprises that are involved in this sort of crime. This is the truth!!!!!!!!!! These people have a tendency to remove and erase data that is extremely important because they are covering up their crimes. Covering up their crimes for what reason, this is because they do not care about others.

Like all of the other Hoaxes and Scams that they’ve used to try and silence the voice of a vast majority of the American People, I have TRUTH on my side, and when you have TRUTH, you will ultimately be victorious!
Just received the strongest poll numbers I have ever gotten, and the largest amount of campaign contributions from the “people”. The public gets the “Scam”, but this time much earlier than all of the others.
The “White House” just announced that it had NO KNOWLEDGE of the early morning RAID on Mar-a-Lago, or the break in of Melania’s closets, my safe’s, or the secured and locked storage area where unclassified documents were safely held, and which the FBI knew of, was shown, and made recommendations that another lock be added (which they cracked, but not with the safecracker that they brought with them!). Does ANYBODY really believe that the White House didn’t know about this? WITCH HUNT!

7 Days of Kastle
Tumblr media
Day 1: The Last Job
Pairing: Frank Castle/Karen Page.
Other Characters: Several characters from DD and TPS mentioned.
Content: Thieves AU.
Warnings: Two spicy lines at the end, nothing too crazy.
Word Count: 675
Prompt: Thief (from the free prompts list)
Summary: Frank and Karen are ready to retire but before that, they decide to assemble the team one last time to steal a blue diamond.
Tumblr media
Frank and Karen are ready to put this life behind them before it catches up with them. They were never in for the money or the luxury, though that was a bonus, the excitement of outsmarting and stealing from the rich was more appealing than anything else. Now, they wanna travel the world, visit the places they’ve never been to, and then settle somewhere. Karen is dying to go to Greece. Frank just wanna be where she is, he’d happily live in a trashcan in the middle of nowhere if she’d ask.
For their last job, they chose to steal a particular jewel that Mr. Fisk had eyes set on for years– a blue diamond from The Russo Collection. The one that was kept beneath several different layers of security, each more intricate than the previous one, at his mansion.
It was months of work and rehearsal. A hell of a curtain call for them and their team. They couldn’t have pulled it off without– Dinah, master in persuasion, who had the pleasure of having to date Billy The Beaut just to get his fingerprints and keep his mind occupied in other matters. David, hacker extraordinaire, a little chaotic but always reliable, enjoyed the challenge of messing up Mr. Russo’s high end security. And Amy, a highly gifted safecracker, young and ambitious, great at improvising on the spot, and a little cocky for her sake, but that comes with her young age.
The plan had its challenges but it was a success. They replaced the diamond with a fake and by the time someone realizes it’s not the authentic one, they’ll be long gone. Obviously, every loose end was tied before parting, assuring themselves that there was nothing left behind that could link the robbery to them. Their team did a great job and they earned a good cut out of it.
Now, Frank and Karen await for their ultimate bounty in Wilson Fisk’s Penthouse.
They’ve dressed for the occasion, both in black, her in a dress, him in a suit with a tie.
Frank takes off his sunglasses and opens the suitcase that holds the ostentatious diamond. He doesn’t take his eyes off it while Fisk’s right hand, Mr. Wesley, appraises the valuable jewel.
“It’s gonna make an interesting brooch for Mr. Fisk,” Frank quips.
Karen’s lips quirk up from her seat on the couch, taking a one last look at the beautiful view out the giant windows.
She stands up when Fisk comes into the room, greeting them with his signature stoic indifference and checks directly with his associate. The only emotion he shows is when he holds the diamond up to the sun to observe the crisp rays creating all short of beautiful lights before his eyes.
“Are you sure you want to retire? You two have a gift. It’d be a shame to waste it like that.”
Frank and Karen look at each other, “we’re sure.”
“Well, in that case, Ms. Page, Mr. Castle, it was a pleasure doing business with you,” he motions at Mr. Wesley, who opens a laptop and starts typing a few numbers, transferring the plentiful amount of 5 million to their account.
Then, he hands them an envelope, “your new identities as requested.”
“Thank you,” Karen takes the envelope and they both shake his hand before heading out.
Frank’s arm curls around her waist as they step into the elevator, pulling her back flush against him so he can kiss her exposed neck as the doors slide closed.
She flinches at the tickle of his neatly trimmed beard, her hand smoothing the sleeve of his blazer.
“Where to now, Mr. Castle?”
“The Plaza.”
“The Plaza?”
“Yeah, just for a couple nights. You and me, room service, a bed, a tub…” his hand slips under the hem of her skirt, pushing the fabric up as his palm slides up over the plane of her thigh, “you out of this dress.”
“Hmm,” she presses her ass against him, as his fingers reach her panties, “I like that plan.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: This is part of a drabble collection that I wrote for @daredevilexchange‘s Fan Week. I’ll be posting one a day until January 9. They're all different au’s and situations featuring Frank and Karen that I’ve always wanted to write. I hope you like these :)

RP meme from “Army of the Dead”
“Make sure I look cute.” “Any idea what the hell we’re hauling?” “Could be anything from a briefcase nuke to the original copy of the Constitution but the one written in the Founding Fathers’ blood.” “All right, I’ll say it. It’s an alien.” “You heard what they said. We need to move now!“ “They’re political prisoners, just people the government doesn’t want on the streets.” “If you want,I could use my rectal thermometer.” “You sure you’re not infected?“ “You’ll need a helicopter pilot and a safecracker.” “Everything we did, all those people we saved, look what it got us.” “Who else is on your crazy-ass list?” “We can’t make small talk for more than 35 minutes without it turning into a fight.“ “You know, when we were in it, like, when we were really in it, I never thought about the faces of all the countless monsters but now just realized, you know, were people. But now their faces, that’s all I see.“ “How precisely do we do the zombie killing?” “Zombies, shamblers, the undead, whatever you wanna call them, when it comes to killing them, it’s all about the brain.” “You were always talking about how, if you saw a zombie, you’d fuck his shit up.” “I can access any hardware you might want.“ “Do this one thing, and I can give you $15 million.” “Don’t talk to me. I don’t trust these people, especially you.” “Listen to me. As someone who’s seen what this looks like, this is not a path you wanna go down. I’m not gonna let you try.“ “I can go in with you, and you can keep me safe.“ “I’ll just sneak in after you, and I’ll probably die.” “It’s a goddamn zombie tiger.” “I would say I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do that, but I’d be lying.“ “They’re smarter. They’re faster. They’re organized. Straight out of your fucking nightmares.” “Help me. Don’t go. No, we’re a team.“ “I’m not trying to be the bad guy, but we should be incentivized to let him die.“ “It’s a free country. People can look at whoever they want.“ “Actually, it’s not a free country. We’re not in America anymore.“ “Why? You want to check out my ass?” “I’ve been watching you, and you’re up to something.“ “So that’s a pretty common theme for you? Leaving people behind?” “Do you think I enjoy having to leave people?” “I’m doing what I can to make things right.” “Guilt finally get the better of you?“ “I’ve never left anyone I didn’t have to or who didn’t deserve it.“ “You didn’t call. You didn’t visit. You didn’t talk about it.You didn’t comfort me.” “You seemed like you didn’t want me there, so I assumed I should stay gone.“ “I was thinking artisan grilled cheese sandwiches.” “I’ve spent so long hating you that I can’t just turn that off.” “You’ve been here in the dark waiting for me.” “It could be us in another timeline, and we’re caught in some infinite loop of fighting and dying, fighting and dying, fighting and dying.” “It’s some kind of a booby trap, trust me.” “By the way, I love your hair.“ “In the right hands, this is the power to make more of them. The power to control your own zombie army. That’s the ultimate WMD.” “Well, you want your deal or not?Huh?That’s what I thought. So you keep your goddamn mouth shut.“ “That was supposed to be nonlethal.” “That has to be illegal, right?” “ You just made me mess up, and now we’re back to ground zero.” “Tofu burgers, tofu fries, tofu milkshake, tofu cheesecake.“ “That is the most money I’ve ever held in my hand.“ “I’ll take it if you don’t want it.“ “Just like old times, right? Well, not just like old times but just as crazy.“ “You’re really stupid. You know that?“ “I didn’t come here for the money, dumb shit.I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ll take the millions. But I came here for you.” “Forever is a long time.” “I’m realizing that I’ve been wrong about everything.” “ Somewhere between leaving your ass and saving my own, I developed a conscience.” “It’s got to be lobster rolls.“ “Everyone loves a goddamn lobster roll.“ “I’m so goddamn proud of you.“ “I’m such a coward.“ “ You’re not a coward. “ “Let me just look at you.“ “To the ironic twist of the unknown.“

Army of Thieves Review: Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Universe Gets Second Helpings
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead universe is expanding, and not in all the ways you expect. The first movie, which involved time loops, robots, aliens, and even copulating zombies, unsurprisingly left viewers with lots of questions, but don’t expect this universe’s sophomore outing to deliver any of the answers you’re looking for. Instead, Army of Thieves is a prequel that largely ignores the zombie-infested hell of Las Vegas, and it’s all the better for it.
Green lighting a prequel before the first movie had even dropped always seemed a bit presumptuous on Netflix’s part, but the connections between the two films are so minor that it hardly matters. Director and star Matthias Schweighöfer (who plays master safecracker Ludwig Dieter in both Army films) has made an entertaining heist movie that stands on its own two feet.
Army of Thieves is really an origin story for Ludwig, arguably Army of the Dead‘s best, most likable character. Six years before Ludwig joins Scott Ward’s expedition into post-apocalyptic Las Vegas, the quirky safecracker is living in Berlin, working a dull office job, and running a YouTube channel nobody watches. His life is a boring routine, but he dreams of conquering the Ring Cycle, a series of legendary bank vaults created by a grand master locksmith that have never been cracked. Ludwig has learned everything there is to know about these mythical vaults and has even put in countless hours of practice into unlocking whatever he can get his hands on. In a flashback, we even learn that while other kids were playing outside, Ludwig was in his room cracking small safes. That someone would dream of becoming a safecracker from a young age seems a little outlandish but it works when the character is as weird and meticulous as Ludwig Dieter.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Unfortunately, becoming a master safecracker doesn’t seem like an attainable dream for Ludwig — until he meets the mysterious Gwendoline (Game of Thrones‘ Nathalie Emmanuel) who offers him a new gig that will change his life and put him on the path that will eventually lead to Vegas. Along with genius hacker Korina (Ruby O. Fee), action hero wannabe Brad Cage (Stuart Martin), and constantly hungry driver Rolph (Guz Khan), Ludwig and Gwendoline set out to find the Ring Cycle and steal all the money inside.
Yes, it’s a trope-y, by-the-numbers heist movie, and not a particularly original script from Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten, but Thieves sort of knows it and doesn’t take itself too seriously. In fact, it happens to be pretty funny movie, thanks to Schweighöfer excellent comedic timing and warmer outlook on life in juxtaposition to his much colder comrades, who play things straight despite how increasingly ridiculous their caper set pieces get. The movie is light on the gritty (sweaty) tone of its predecessor, and that’s a better fit for a character like Ludwig, who felt like an underdeveloped, comedic relief redshirt in the original but is fully fleshed out here and in his element. Despite its over two-hour runtime, Ludwig and the gang’s romp around Europe feels relatively breezy (although 20 minutes or so should have probably been excised anyway).
Army of Thieves isn’t just a showcase for Schweighöfer’s talent as a charming comedic actor but also as a promising director. While his predecessor used some…unusual camera techniques for the original, Schweighöfer goes for something much cleaner this time around, including shots of beautiful European vistas that would feel right at home in a James Bond movie. Some of the action sequences are better than others, but Schweighöfer does deliver a few standout moments, such as a fight scene with Emmanuel in the cavernous depths of a heavily guarded bank.
Ultimately, the best parts of Army of Thieves are the performances, from Schweighöfer’s nervous genius, to Fee’s sarcastic hipster hacker who also moonlights as a DJ, to Martin’s try-hard gunslinger who often feels like a tongue-in-cheek nod to some of Snyder’s own characters. There’s also Jonathan Cohen as a loser Interpol agent named Delacroix who is always two steps behind Emmanuel’s calculating master criminal. This ensemble is fun to watch, even if some characters feel more fully realized than others. I would have liked to spend a bit more time with sandwich-loving Rolph, who feels more like a henchman than a real member of the team. His intro sequence is cool, though.
As I said, if you’re mostly in it for the zombies, Army of Thieves won’t really scratch that itch. Yes, the movie nods to things going on in Sin City but you won’t be spending any real time there. In many ways, this prequel feels like the start of a spin-off series starring Ludwig and friends, and judging from the quality of this first outing, I’d definitely say more vaults await.
Army of Thieves is out on Netflix on Oct. 29.

Run for the Hills
Goodness I should have written this long ago and I really don't know why I didn't! I am so pleased this prompt appeared because it has finally, finally spurred me on to write it. It's another character I don't usually write solo for – not that I know why, I think just because I haven't as opposed to any issues with writing the character.
Anyway, I would kill for a backstory series on all this you know, but hey, I'll just keep making it up to my pleasure until they choose to see so fit as to give me one.
20: Run for the Hills
Summary: He'd honestly thought it a saying, and little more. He was re-evaluating that now.
Words: 1805
Spoilers: Potential references to 'The Hexpert' [S1E20], 'Designated Driver' [S1E22]. Mentions 'Signals: Part One' [S3E14]. Nothing major.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
'e ad hoften thought habout hall this running haround: driving ha fancy car hand looking the part…
It was him. There was no denying that.
FAB One and the beautiful, kind young Lady (okay, and the mutt), he drove around were proof of all he know was.
Chauffeur, Butler, Protector.
Yes, he was all of those things thanks to Lord Creighton-Ward's faith in him.
No hone 'ad hever 'ad faith like that hin 'im.
Not even those who were always meant to have his back, those who he ran with had never had that much belief.
Safecracker, illusive thief, criminal mastermind…
Okay, well, maybe he hadn't quite made the records for the last one, but they were the things he had been, the things he thought he had left behind, so to speak.
They never left him. He couldn't forget all the things which had made up his checkered past, which formed his skill set, and had led him to this ultimate point.
This point hof faith.
Lord Creighton-Ward gave him a chance and he took it. He was already something and someone, but maybe this gave him a chance to be more than that.
*********
He'd been thinking that in the sense of… well, some kind of retribution for his past failings and run-ins with the law.
He hadn't been thinking in the sense of an ex-astronaut who his Lordship seemed to be quite friendly with.
"Parker, this is Mr Jeff Tracy."
"Nice to meet you, Mr Tracy, Sir."
"Oh, you don't need the 'Sir', Parker."
"hOh… right you hare, Sir."
When he accepted Lord Creighton-Ward's offer;
"What would hI be doing, M'Lord?"
"Just driving my daughter around, Parker. Looking out for her."
"hOh, hI can do that, Your Lordship. hI hused to be hour get-haway driver."
"Did you now?"
"Yes, Your Lordship, hand might hI say, hI was halmost has good has that, has hI was hat cracking the safes."
"Well, then I'm sure I couldn't be hiring better hands."
…He had, well, assumed it was a one-person sort of job. One person to mind that was.
But since the arrival of Jeff Tracy, it seemed more had come his way.
Much more.
Crikey ho' Riley… what 'ad 'e signed 'imself hup for?
Lord Creighton-Ward gave Mr Jeff Tracy Sir, quite ha lot hof funding for some project hor hanother.
That was what Parker worked out early on, from being stood in the room or sat in the driver's seat.
*********
The American visited the residence quite often too.
And one day, he brought his eldest son with him for the trip.
"Ah, Parker, you remember Jeff."
A polite nod to show the answer was the haffirmative.
"This is Jeff's eldest boy. Mr Scott Tracy."
The boy seemed very confident too, holding out a hand like he was ready for a handshake. Parker obliged, after a polite bow, of course.
"Nice to meet you, Mr Scott, Sir."
"Oh no, Parker, he's definitely not a Sir."
"hOh… right you hare, Mr Jeff Tracy Sir."
He'd gone promptly to serve the tea, missing the very bright-eyed glances shared between the two men.
*********
It was the right choice.
hAccepting his Lordship's offer.
Of course it was the right choice.
Lord Creighton-Ward rather thought so too.
*********
"Tea, M'Lady?"
"Tea, Parker."
The young Lady Penelope, heir to his Lordship, wasn't quite one for all that sitting still at gala's and charity balls. Parker thought she was a sight worse than him, and he at least wasn't supposed to be a.. huhem… 'igh born.
She set him off half the time.
Her Father didn't seem to particularly mind either, Parker noticed. He'd spare her a cursory glance, non-interruptive to whatever or whomever he was conversing with, see he was already prepared to follow along dutifully behind her, and return to whatever he was occupied with.
Parker wondered for many years whether that was strange or just a trait of the 'igh born.
He never realised, nor had time to be told by his Lordship, that it was only because he was going to be there that the man could take his eyes off his daughter for more than two seconds.
His Lordship would rather have liked to tell him that.
*********
Mr Jeff Tracy Sir continued to visit often.
The young Lady Penelope was rather liking getting to know his sons too. Parker supposed it made sense.
"hAh 'ello hagain, Mr Tracy Sir."
"Yes, hello Parker. Lovely weather today."
"Makes ha change from the rain, Mr Tracy Sir. hOh, there's three hof you."
"Yes, Parker, this is another of my sons. John Tracy."
"Nice to make your hacquaintance, Mr John Sir."
"Oh, I'm not-"
"And 'ello hagain to you, Mr Scott Sir."
"-a Sir."
*********
Parker had often thought of the old saying… Run for the hills.
Maybe that's what he should be doing, and doing now. Running whilst there was still some kind of chance.
He didn't. Lord Creighton-Ward had chosen him, and put his faith in him.
He owed the man a certain amount of loyalty for that.
And he'd promised to protect the man's daughter.
Even if that seemed to come with an additional family who he somehow ended up playing butler for too.
*********
FAB One had been a replacement for FAB Zero when petrol began to die out.
Lord Creighton-Ward had intended to get a black car this time around, much sleeker and more stylish, but her young ladyship had kicked up a fuss… a rather polite fuss, but a fuss nevertheless.
"Everyone has black cars."
"It's the nature of high society, dear. Chauffeurs drive the cars, the cars blend in."
"The last car did not."
"No, well, that was a favour I was testing for a friend, you see. But it is not viable to have another pink car dear."
"But I think something pink to carry on the tradition would look most fine, Father. Don't you think so too, Parker?"
"hOh… hI hum… well, yes, M'Lady."
"See Father, Parker agrees with me, and since he'll be the one driving it, I think it's only fair if we make sure it is pink."
"Yes, Penelope dear, whatever you say."
"hI ham sorry, Your Lordship. hI didn't know what helse hI could say to 'er."
"That is quite alright, Parker. She's right, after all. Why not have another pink car."
FAB One could also be black though, there was a rather handy switch for it.
Yes, Parker very much liked the new 'get-haway' car, 'is Lordship 'ad bought 'im.
*********
FAB Zero had lived in the garage for many years.
Many, many years until Parker and Scott crossed paths again. He'd been doing a spot of… spring cleaning, when Mr Jeff Tracy Sir had turned up with the boy, His Lordship and young Lady Penelope in tow.
"Good morning Parker."
"Good morning, Mr Tracy Sir."
"Yes, well… Apparently it's okay for you to take the day to teach Scott here how to drive."
"Me, Mr Tracy Sir?"
"Yes Parker, you." His Lordship agreed. "Who better."
"Can Parker teach me how to drive?"
"You don't need to drive, dear, that's why you have Parker."
"Hmm, but one of these days-"
The conversation faded away as did the figures until Parker was left very much halone with the eldest Tracy boy. He'd lost count now as to how many of them there were. It was so much easier with just her Ladyship to look after on a daily basis.
"So, how do I drive?"
And he thought her Ladyship moved fast. hOh to be young...
"This car looks awesome. Oh, why's there a button there? Dad's doesn't have one of those-"
It wasn't usual custom, but he grabbed the young man's hand before it could even reach the little impress.
"hI wouldn't touch that, hif hI were you."
"What does it do?"
"Well, Mr Scott Sir, maybe hone hof these days hI'll show you, but for now your father 'as hasked me to teach you to drive."
"So teach me! I'm ready."
"No, Mr Scott Sir. You're sitting hin the wrong car."
"The wrong car?"
"hOnly hI 'ave the 'onour hof driving FAB One."
"So what am I meant to drive."
"hI'm glad you hasked."
*********
"Parker?"
"Yes, M'Lady?"
"I'd like you to meet Sherbet."
"hOh, hI hused to love Sherbets… hOh."
"He's my new companion. He'll go with us wherever we go."
"hEven hin the car, M'Lady?"
"Of course. I wouldn't expect him to walk alongside us on the road, would I now?"
He sighed.
"No, M'Lady."
*********
"You will look after Penelope, won't you?"
"hOf course hI will, Your Lordship."
He wasn't going to dare tell the man that she was perfectly capable of looking after herself.
Or that 'e might 'ave let slip ha few hold tricks to 'er.
*********
They were saying goodbye to Mr Jeff Tracy Sir.
He'd just come for tea in the wake and told them some very interesting information.
It had made Her Ladyship rather happy anyhow.
"Well Parker, that does make things more exciting."
"Certainly, M'Lady. hI'm sure Mr Scott Sir, hand Mr John Sir, hand Mr Virgil Sir will hall be very pleased to see you hat the hIsland."
"Yes, quite, um… Parker?"
"Yes, M'Lady?"
"You do know the boys aren't Mr Tracy's yet."
"hAre they not, M'Lady?"
"No, no, no. They still have Jeff. They're Master Tracy's."
"hOh… hI see. Well, M'Lady, hI'm sure Master Scott Sir, hand Master John Sir, hand Master Virgil Sir will hall be-"
He never realised how much Lady Penelope loved the little mistakes he made with his terminology or his speech. And she never told him – too much – for fear that she would correct her source of entertainment too much.
No, she rather liked this character her Father had found for her.
Parker never told her that he rather liked her too.
*********
The little bell rang, somehow clear and shrill through the house.
Blimey! 'e no longer knew 'ow that was possible.
Back up he went. hAgain.
Master Gordon was a bound to be ringing for something.
He was in this for the long haul, certainly until that leg repaired itself.
hOh… He'd have a five in six chance of it being any of the other Tracy siblings, and he was including Kayo.
But of all the ones Her Ladyship had to take a shining too… it had to be the blonde currently laid up with a stack of injuries, one heck of an attitude and a little annoying bell.
"Parker!"
The bell rang again.
"Parker!"
"Coming! Master Gordon Sir. hOh…"
*********
Maybe he really should have run for those hills when he had the chance.
He'd honestly thought it a saying, and little more. He was re-evaluating that now. hAgain.
But of course, it didn't change a thing.
hAgain.

An Introduction to Callan
Tumblr media
Allow me to introduce you to a new fandom of mine - Callan, a British TV series from 1967-72 starring Edward Woodward (The Equalizer, The Wicker Man) in the title role. Callan is a Cold War spy drama in the tradition of Len Deighton's The Ipcress File and John le Carré's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. Its world is dark and bleak, its characters morally ambiguous, and its stories often end on a downbeat turn. (The first episode of the series is called "The Good Ones Are All Dead"). James Bond this is not; in fact, Callan was conceived as the antithesis to Bond-style escapism. It depicts the seedy side of espionage with its criminal associates and cynical bureaucracy, beneath which agents toil like pawns on a chessboard, as likely to be killed by friend as foe.
So why do I recommend this series? Well, if you're like me, you're partial to darkness and angst ;) But even if that's not your usual cup of tea, I suggest you check out Callan on the strength of its acting alone. Woodward does a masterful job of portraying the morally conflicted assassin, David Callan, both frightening in his anger and heartbreakingly vulnerable in his grief. He is joined by Anthony Valentine (Colditz, Raffles) with whom he shares crackling on-screen chemistry, and Russell Hunter (The Gaffer), a skilled character actor who practically inhabits his role. This top-notch talent is supported by a top-notch script. The plots are complex and clever, featuring lies, subterfuge, and misdirection - all the classic spy storylines - that demand close attention from the audience. Sharp dialogue takes the place of action in most parts, shining the spotlight on character interaction. Many scenes read as if they'd come from a superb stage play.
Finally, for the slash fans, there's a ton of wonderful subtext surrounding the two handsome leads, Callan and Meres, as well as several canonically gay/bisexual side characters.
In conclusion, you'll enjoy Callan if
You relish historically-based spy dramas with complex plots.
You like morally ambiguous and conflicted main characters.
You are a sucker for tragedy, angst, and every deathfic trope.
You appreciate good-looking men in three-piece suits.
On the other hand, this series may not be for you if
You prefer slick "James Bond" action, adventure, and romance.
You need a protagonist that you can always root for.
You want modern cinematography and video quality.
You are bothered by some degree of sexism and wish to see a diverse cast.
In the following sections, I provide a detailed description of the setting and characters. Interested readers may watch the entire show on my Youtube playlist, or just check out the recommended episodes below. (Due to the age of the series, some episodes from seasons 1-2 are missing from the BBC archives. I have posted all that are commercially available).
The Section
Tumblr media
Eliminating people. Framing. Extortion. Death. All the jobs that are too dirty for Her Majesty's security forces to touch. The Section is a top secret branch of British intelligence that specializes in dirty jobs no other branch will touch - kidnapping, extortion, blackmail, and quite often execution of persons deemed a threat to the government. Its targets are usually spies or assets belonging to the Eastern bloc, although it is not above eliminating innocent citizens should they threaten its goals as well. Its secrecy is paramount. All agents, including the Section head, are known only by code name, and the department itself is housed in a drab building under cover of a scrap metal business owned by "Charlie Hunter". The offices are cramped, the furniture spartan; except for a shooting range in the basement, there is no hint as to its true purpose... which is just as well, for any unauthorized person who learns of its purpose is likely to wind up in a red file - most urgently marked for death by the Section's assassins.
Hunter
Tumblr media
You're always asking for reasons. That's what makes you weak. Schneider's in a red file, that's reason enough. The code name for the current head of Section is Hunter. Hunter delegates the missions and directs the movements of agents in the field. He himself rarely steps foot outside the office, instead delivering orders from behind his imposing oak desk - orders which he expects to be obeyed unquestioned. His main method of communication (aside from in-person meetings) is the red telephone on his desk. Typically, an agent phones in with a report to "Charlie", and Hunter answers with an assessment of the situation followed by a new order. He is ultimately responsible for the success or failure of a mission. As Section head, Hunter also has political obligations. He must meet with senior government officials such as the Foreign Secretary, navigate diplomatic waters for defectors and allies, and forestall interdepartmental rivalry with agencies like Special Branch. Thus, the qualifications for Hunter are far more administrative than they are physical, which is reflected by the aging staff officers who typically fill the role. The first Hunter we meet is Colonel Leslie, known colloquially as the Colonel among his agents. (In keeping with military protocol, subordinates are expected to address the Section head to his face as "Hunter" or "sir"). It is the Colonel who introduces a color-coded filing system for the Section's extensive list of targets. David Callan, a top field operative, describes the system thusly in the pilot - "If a bloke joined the wrong party, he got a blue file. If he was under surveillance, he got a yellow one. And if he was dangerous, I mean really dangerous, he got a red one. He usually got killed as well." Later, a white file is added for individuals whom the Section wants to put in prison, divorce courts, bankruptcy, or mental homes, a slightly less permanent destination than death. As the series progresses, various men don the mantle of Hunter, some more rigid, others marginally more forgiving. But that filing system always remains the same.
David Callan
Tumblr media
You sacked me, remember? You said I was too soft. Well, I'm still soft, Hunter. I still worry about the people I've killed. David Callan is only good at two things - killing people and collecting model soldiers. The son of a working-class family, his parents were killed by a V2 rocket when he was only 13, and he left school shortly thereafter to apprentice at a locksmiths firm. Eventually, he found his way into the army and impressed his superiors with his shooting, unarmed combat, and survival skills, earning him a promotion to corporal. That promotion was short-lived, however, as his insolence toward an officer saw him reduced back to private. This would be a recurring theme in Callan's career. After serving as a commando in Malaya, he returned to work at the locksmiths firm. He soon became involved in the attempted theft of a jeweler's safe, but was caught and sentenced to 2 years in Wormwood Scrubs. It was upon Callan's early release that the Section recruited him. He trained under Colonel Leslie and carried out numerous missions, including assassinations, with great success. The Colonel rated him very highly, and he in turn held the Colonel in considerable regard. By the age of 29, Callan had risen to second-in-command and was on the shortlist of candidates for next head of Section. Then, everything changed. In the spring of 1965, the Colonel ordered Callan to kill a KGB agent named Zhverkov, whom Callan knew and liked very much. After immense pressure, he finally carried out the killing, but from then on became overly involved with his targets, insisting on making his own value judgments rather than following orders blindly. His relationship with the Colonel deteriorated until the Section deactivated him a year later. At the start of the series, Callan is a 36-year-old bookkeeper working a dead-end job, his suit shabby and wrinkled, his flat spartan and cheap, the only joy in his life his collection of model soldiers. No one would guess that he was once the Section's most prolific assassin. Callan's defining characteristic is his conscience - he needs to know why a job must be done before he will do it. Even then, he is liable to disobey orders he feels are unjust or endanger innocent people. His tendency to sympathize with his targets brings him in direct conflict with Hunter, as well as his fellow agents, who have no qualms about killing. This conflict is exacerbated by Callan's class consciousness; he carries a chip on his shoulder regarding authority, especially wielded by officers and the social elite... two circles that comprise most of his superiors. Indeed, season 1 sees Callan at odds with his allies more often than his enemies, saved from placement in a red file only by his usefulness to the Section. The thought that his usefulness may one day run out forms the underlying tension in the series. In the end, Callan is a man trapped by his own success - an assassin who kills because he is good at nothing else.
Lonely
Tumblr media
I do have baths, Mr. Callan. The way I smell is psychosomatic. Lonely lives up to his name. A small-time burglar with terrible body odor, he first met Callan during the latter's stint in Wormwood Scrubs. His criminal skills proved useful, and Callan began to employ him on a case-by-case basis as a lookout, tail, thief/safecracker, driver, and weapons supplier for Section work, although Lonely himself knows nothing about the Section. In fact, Lonely has never pulled a trigger in his life. He frequently must be bullied or bribed into helping Callan on a job, and then only reluctantly for fear of being caught in the violence. Their relationship can most succinctly be described as codependent. Lonely needs Callan's cash and protection (though that protection is often from Callan's own colleagues), and Callan needs Lonely's eyes and ears, for the petty crook's very insignificance makes him an excellent spy. They are the closest each has to a friend. That friendship is tested again and again by Hunter. Since Lonely is not part of the Section, he represents a security risk to its operations, and more than one Hunter has threatened to eliminate Lonely for good. They usually back down, however, after seeing Callan's reaction. Because as much as Callan exploits and abuses Lonely, he is also fiercely protective of the little man, exacting vicious revenge on anyone (including fellow agents) who dare lay hands on the burglar. This is because Lonely is the only person Callan can trust - an outsider to the spy game, not bright enough or important enough to warrant attention, and very much dependent on him. His smell is the smell of Callan's own id, a dank pit of criminality driven more by fear than loyalty to any particular cause.
Toby Meres
Tumblr media
It's frightfully bad taste to welcome you like this, I agree, but we do need a spot of information from you rather urgently - just filling in, you know, code names and so on. If Lonely is the id, then Meres is Callan's foil. Born the son of a Lord, Meres was educated at the prestigious Eton College before receiving a commission as an officer in the Coldstream Guards. His career ended abruptly when a private guardsman died in an "accident" that he arranged. Although the case never made it to court martial, Meres was forced to resign and eventually found employment as an agent in the Section. The work suited his real talents. At the beginning of the series, he is a youthful 27 and already Hunter's right-hand man. Only Callan stands between him and the top. On the surface, Meres is droll and charming, the portrait of a public schoolboy from the upper classes. But that is only a mask for his sadistic streak. He has none of Callan's reservations about killing and will carry out orders ruthlessly and efficiently, even delighting in the opportunity to interrogate prisoners. His attitude toward colleagues is typified by emotional indifference with a touch of condescension. At the death of one, Meres simply observes that it's "par for the course" in their line of work. He largely leaves trainees to sink or swim and is not especially bothered when they sink. The only person who stirs some feeling in him is Callan. From the beginning, Meres recognizes Callan's talent and extols it to allies and superiors. He claims to detest Callan - indeed, the two start off as antagonists - yet lobbies for the latter to rejoin the Section in "Red Knight, White Knight". After that point, their relationship slowly develops from a rivalry to a partnership based on mutual respect for each other's skills. Meres enjoys teasing Callan (sometimes to a dangerous degree, as he is prone to breaking into Callan's flat unannounced), and Callan grows to trust Meres despite their very different moral systems. It is telling that the most distraught Meres ever gets is during a scene with Callan in "Death of a Hunter". Perhaps this is because Meres, at heart, does have some semblance of a conscience. He subtly protests orders from Hunter that he deems ill-advised or unnecessarily harsh. It's simply that his bar for harshness sits a lot higher than Callan's, and when push comes to shove, Meres will usually cave to authority because authority is what he learned to obey in the Guard.
James Cross
Tumblr media
You ever played Russian roulette? It's better than horses. You play for your life. Cross is a newcomer to the Section, promoted during a period when both Callan and Meres were unavailable. A young man in his 20's with flip hair and a taste for stylish clothes, he has the swagger of an agent with twice the experience, despite logging a mediocre record in the field. He fancies himself Callan's successor and is none too pleased when the latter returns to the Section. Brash and callous, Cross has little regard for the collateral damage from his actions, putting him at immediate odds with Callan. His recalcitrance leads to at least one disaster, which Callan is forced to clean up. As a result, the two share a mutual dislike for each other - Cross believes Callan is over the hill, Callan perceives Cross as an arrogant upstart - and initially only work together on Hunter's orders. In many ways, Cross resembles a young Meres. They both exude smug confidence, harbor a sadistic streak, and have their eye on Callan's position as top agent. However, while Meres's ambition is tempered by genuine respect, Cross bestows that respect grudgingly. He and Callan never develop the sort of camaraderie that Callan has with Meres.
Elizabeth (Liz) March
Tumblr media
That girl's a walking memory bank. She's been in a red file since the day she took the job. Liz is Hunter's secretary and handles all the communications, transportation, and files on allies and enemies. She fulfills this duty from the first episode to the last, making her one of the most knowledgeable people in the Section, moreso than many agents like Cross. It's thus a pity that her role in the series is largely limited to answering phones. (I couldn't even find a decent quote by her). However, she does get an opportunity to shine in "A Village Called 'G'", which provides a glimpse into her backstory and motivations.
Dr. Snell
Tumblr media
I put him on tranquilizers for a bit, and he quite liked that. And then some of the hallucinogens... Oh, and I managed to make him lose track of time too. Then, I put him on pentothal. He prattles like a child. At first glance, Snell doesn't seem to belong in the Section. He's a soft-spoken, bespectacled man of about 50 with silver hair and the dispassionate air of an Ivory Tower academic. We first meet him at his office on Harley Street, where he runs a private medical practice. Hunter asks him to conduct a benign memory test on a biologist suspected of East German sympathies. However, it soon becomes clear that Snell's role extends far beyond that of a simple outside adviser. He is arguably one of the most important people involved in the Section and, in effect, outranks the field agents themselves. For Snell is a psychiatrist, who employs his skills in two ways - interrogating enemy operatives and evaluating the medical fitness of the Section's own employees. In the first task, he is uniquely brutal because his instruments of torture are drugs (pentothal, LSD, and other psychotropics) that wreak havoc on his victim's mind. And Snell goes about this work with scientific indifference, only betraying a hint of pleasure when his injections give rise to an interesting effect. What's more, his victims usually don't remember what they've said to him... if they retain their sanity at all. Snell's interrogation techniques already cast him as a sinister figure, but what makes him disliked even among his allies is his second task - psychologically profiling the Section's own agents. You see, espionage is a highly stressful job. If an agent snaps, the consequences for national security could be dire. Thus, it is Snell's job to determine whether an agent is about to snap before he snaps and report it to higher authority. At best, a bad report from Snell means getting pulled from the field. At worst, it gets one's name placed in a red file. Either way, his word is usually final.
Mr. Bishop
Tumblr media
All you need to know is that in the pecking order of the security game, we get first peck. "Big men have to snivel sometimes, Hunter," Snell says, and the man Hunter snivels to is Bishop. A senior official in the SIS, Bishop is Hunter's superior and oversees a wide variety of foreign intelligence operations. He has the authority to assign new missions, disburse funds for equipment, order prisoner exchanges, and hire and fire Section heads. However, while his powers are broad, Bishop never steps foot in the field - his role is purely strategic, and his concern lies with the sociopolitical impact of a job rather than the individuals involved. He is the picture of the calculating, condescending bureaucrat, giving orders from his cushy seat in the rear while his subordinates risk their lives. It thus comes as a surprise that Bishop acts as Callan's ally in the beginning. He sees potential in Callan beyond that of a mere trigger-puller and bolsters the latter's career within the Section. Naturally, Bishop's reasons are self-serving - Callan is just a particularly useful cog in the espionage machine, after all - but they manage to forge a fragile working relationship... until circumstances intervene.
Richmond
Tumblr media
For people like you and me, safety can only be found among our enemies. It's our friends who will kill us. While Richmond appears in only a few episodes, his impact on Callan is profound enough to warrant a spot on this list. Richmond is a colonel in the KGB and one of their best, most experienced agents. Intelligent and erudite, he uses his substantial knowledge about Callan's background to try and manipulate the latter into betraying the Section, launching a dangerous cat-and-mouse game in the "The Richmond File" series finale.
Recommended Episodes
The Good Ones Are All Dead (S01E01) - Under threat of being placed in a red file, Callan is coerced into helping the Section hand over an ex-SS officer, Strauss, to the Israelis. Introduces the main cast and sets up the hostile dynamic between Callan and Colonel Leslie. An emotional performance by Edward Woodward at the end.
The Most Promising Girl of Her Year (S02E02) - Callan must prove that a young biochemist is not giving information to the East. Introduces Snell and his interrogation methods. Also features an intelligent and sympathetic female character, whose ethical principles make her the true heroine of the story.
Let's Kill Everybody (S02E05) - A freelance German mercenary organisation that specialises in eliminating foreign security agencies has its sights set on the Section. An aptly named episode, so I won't spoil anything except to say that no one is who they seem...
Heir Apparent (S02E06) - Callan and Meres must fetch the new Hunter from East Germany. This might as well be a Callan/Meres fanfic with the amount of slash in it. Our two agents "go on a hols" together, sharing a sleeping car, drinking on the town, and navigating a minefield right on the edge of the Iron Curtain.
Death of a Hunter (S02E15) - A hunter dies, but which one? Is it the hard-bitten Callan, the laconic Meres, the enigmatic Hunter or someone else? I debated including a synopsis because the title already gives too much away. One of Edward Woodward's finest performances, loaded with pain and anguish, and a definitive Callan/Meres story.
Where Else Could I Go? (S03E01) - After five months in the hospital recuperating from near-fatal gunshot wounds, Callan returns to the Section to find the upstart Cross after his position. Under the doubting eye of his superior, the agent must prove that he still has the will to kill. Introduces Cross and William Squire's Hunter, probably the most iconic Hunter of the series. Also contains fodder for Callan/Lonely in the way of a very protective Callan.
A Village Called 'G' (S03E04) - The entire Section goes on red alert when Liz, Hunter's ever-punctual secretary, fails to show up for work. Trying to trace her, Callan begins to suspect that Liz's disappearance involves not an enemy from the present, but a ghost from her past. Liz finally gets a turn in the limelight, and we're treated to some background on her childhood.
Breakout (S03E08) - By surrendering to the police, wily KGB operative Nikolai Lubin seeks safety in a British prison, out of reach of Hunter and the Section's interrogators. Hunter, however, has other plans - engineering Lubin's "escape" under the guise of a KGB operation. A rare episode in which Callan and Cross display some teamwork.
Call Me Sir! (S04E02) - Upon Callan's return, dire circumstances force him to accept a new position within the Section - one that affords an entirely different perspective on his work, particularly regarding his relationship with Lonely. Callan receives a promotion he never asked for. More I cannot say without spoiling the plot.
If He Can, So Could I (S04E05) - Cross's behavior on his previous assignment calls into question his fitness for service. Nevertheless, Callan assigns his former rival the perilous task of protecting a dissident Russian poet. Snell puts Cross through the wringer in this one, and the way Cross cracks reflects Callan's own insecurities. The ending scene between Callan/Lonely is absolutely phenomenal - one of the few times Callan goes to pieces emotionally, revealing the enormous strain he and his fellow agents are under. Edward Woodward won a BAFTA for this performance.
I Never Wanted the Job (S04E08) - After witnessing a gangster's execution, Lonely runs afoul of the killers and the police, jeopardizing both his cover and Callan's life. The closest this series gets to fluff. Some cute Callan/Meres/Hunter interaction plus an offhand comment by a character about how Callan must be "queer" for Lonely make this a very shippy episode.
The Richmond File: Call Me Enemy (S04E11) - Alone at a remote safe house, Callan debriefs a high-ranking prospective defector - a man known as Richmond, who promises to reveal a traitor within the Section. This is it. This is what spy dramas are about. Not fast car chases or gunfights, but two people on opposite sides trying to manipulate each other with deception and lies. Edward Woodward and T.P. McKenna give career-defining performances in this battle of wits between veteran agents who have more in common with each other than their respective employers... or do they? The episode is like a stage play and provides a rare bit of history on Callan and Meres.

Papillon (2017)
Tumblr media
Not everyone’s life is suited for film. Even when someone makes an impact on society or survives a harrowing ordeal, you’ve got to have an experience like Henri “Papillon” Charrière did, with an interesting hero, adversaries, natural ups and downs, and events that naturally lend themselves to a multitude of emotions. It’s no wonder his story has been made into a movie... again.
Falsely convicted of murder, “Papillon” (played by Charlie Hunnam, who derives his nickname on the butterfly tattoo on his chest) is sent to the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island in French Guiana. Determined to escape and in need of money for bribes, he offers to protect fellow inmate and millionaire counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek). Through his numerous escape attempts, Papillon’s alliance eventually turns into genuine friendship.
When you see the practices at the prison, it’s shocking. I know 1931 was 80 years ago, but even so, you’d think the people would’ve known better. That’s one of the strengths of this film. Though Papillon is a thief and safecracker by trade, the brutality of the inmates' sentences is so severe, you forget about their past lives and cheer for them. Chained to their beds, forced into solitary confinement for years at a time, deprived of food, beaten, used as slaves, you want nothing more than to see him go free.
There is a constant state of uncertainty and danger present. When you think Papillon and Dega have found a way out, a new obstacle arrives with a grimace that says “There’s nothing that makes me happier than to smash your dreams of freedom to pieces”. You go through this cycle of despair and hope, eventually becoming lost in the hefty running time (133 minutes) and having no idea what's coming next. I know over two hours sounds long but so much happens there’s never a slow moment.
Papillon makes good use of Charlie Hunnam, who can be a little cold when he isn’t in the right role (as much as I like Pacific Rim, I'll admit he’s its least interesting character). Here, he’s got a kind of menace that makes him convincing in the part and likeable without the need to make him overly nice or charismatic. Rami Malek, whom we’ll see again later this year in Bohemian Rhapsody conveys a sort of manic desperation and will to survive you totally buy. Not everyone in this wretched prison will make it out alive. You can feel the long periods of solitary confinement grinding away at Papillon's sanity which means the film keeps you invested even though you can deduce what his ultimate fate will be.
I haven’t seen the previous adaptation of Papillon from 1973 - which some critics have said is better than this one- but I want to now. As for this film, it’s exciting and tense all the way through. (Theatrical version on the big screen, August 28, 2018)
