The Sexism of the Witcher 3
I’m sorry dear reader, but this is a topic I’ll keep getting back to. Skip The Witcher 3 posts if you find them boring. By now, anyone who knows me also know that I deeply dislike playing male player characters, and they also know I dislike sexism in games. All this makes for slim pickings when it comes to the games I play. Here’s my dilemma. I’m also a game developer, meaning that I, to some…

They're also introducing better textures, photo mode, different camera angles for gameplay, updating some broken quests, and there's something else to be announced soon.
I can't get used to Dandelion beardless, but am HERE for Geralt in that armour!

Campaign for Guild Wars:
HoT has beautiful map design with a lot of exploration. It really feels like you're trapped in a hostile jungle, but you still find allies who help you survive and kill the dragon. The game encourages teamwork in the gameplay and story themes in a way unlike most MMO's.

So, I'm watching The Witcher: Wild Hunt gameplay - it's amazing and I want to cry because in total it's almost 30h of videos and aaaaAaaaaaaaAAAAAA - and I noticed that when you use the witcher's senses, things glow red, gold and silver (?) according to importance, functionality and usefulness. And my ADHD brain immediately: hey, doesn't that look like eagle vision?

So! Witcher Desmond, anyone?
Here’s the Desmond (and some more characters) gets isekai’ed into the Witcher world ask I got before for more Witcher AU idea.
Witcher 3 is one of the greatest RPGs. Honestly, the main reason why I haven’t finished it is because it keeps crashing my PS5. XD
So a witcher!Desmond has been knocking on my head for quite a while now.
Of course, we are taking a lot of liberty from Witcher lore in this one, mainly to ‘preserve’ some of the core elements of AC lore.
Now, Witcher is known to be made so, in this setup, Desmond came to the School of the Eagle in mysterious circumstances that only their leader, also called the mentor, knows. Some say he was sold off by his parents. Some say he was a bastard son of a high-ranking noble that wished him to be striken off the ‘records’.
Regardless of the reason, Desmond grows up to be a witcher with three other kids.
Altaïr is an orphan who was sold off to them, supposedly of unknown origin. He’s quite close to a veteran witcher named Umar who treats him like his own son. (You decide if Umar dies in this one or… just goes on his own Witcher travels)
Ezio had a family. Or… he believed he had a family. His memories are fuzzy but he believed he had siblings once but he’s not sure if it’s real or if he was dreaming them. Giovanni, an older witcher and one of their training instructors, found Ezio as a small child near their headquarters with a letter saying that the child’s name is Ezio. That’s all he knows about Ezio’s past.
Ratonhnhaké:ton was actually taken from his mother when he was young and was supposed to be sold off when Bayek, one of the oldest witchers in their school, got into a fight with the slave ‘traders’ and Bayek had tried to bring Ratonhnhaké:ton home, only for them to find his village gone. Even with the witcher sense, the villagers’ trail ends by the nearest coast and Ratonhnhaké:ton decided to become a witcher to become strong enough to find his village (and his mother).
The four of them develop a close bond with one another, one which the other witchers don’t really try to push because folks get testy with just one witcher… four witchers traveling together? It’s unheard of and, frankly, would get them more in trouble than it’s worth. They do tend to find one another even though they usually travel alone, usually because they decide (on their own) to hunt the same monster or follow the same rumor.
Unorganized Notes:
Altaïr is the most proficient in signs in general and uses them regularly with his regular attacks. It’s normal to see him use Igni in close combat after striking his opponents with his sword or Aard to keep other enemies back while he’s focused on one of them.
Among the four though, Desmond has the highest mastery over Axii and he has no qualms about using it to calm down other people or make them do what he wants. During battle, Desmond usually uses Axii to confuse his opponents and create an opening.
Ezio rarely uses Axii as he feels uncomfortable manipulating other people’s minds. He usually cast Quen before charging into battle, just to be safe.
Ratonhnhaké:ton prefers to use Yrden as a trap for his opponents and also uses a bow with specialized arrows (poison, silver, etc). He’s also the most skilled in hunting his target and sometimes doesn’t even need the witcher senses to find clues.
Among the four, Ratonhnhaké:ton’s the one to mostly use potions and decoctions. Altaïr mostly just creates them out of curiosity and experiments with a lot of possible combinations but rarely uses them, most of the time just giving them to Ratonhnhaké:ton or the other two if they meet and his inventory is getting full. Ezio tends to only use them if he has no other choice and Desmond… uuuhh… Desmond mostly forgets them. They oil their swords liberally though. That’s just good sense. (“Good sense would be drinking-” “What’s that? I don’t hear you. I think you’re too far away.” “I’m right beside you.” “Huh? I might be getting something with my witcher senses. Please wait.” “That… that’s not how it works.”
Cristina and Sofia are two sorceresses that Ezio has… past dealings with. The other three don’t want to know the details.
I was contemplating if Leonardo should be their Dandelion but I think it’s better if we keep him as he is, the multitalented mad man we all love. He’s also a very avid Gwent player who taught the boys how to play Gwent. Most of the time, he provides information and rumors to them.
All witchers of the School of Eagles have a Hidden Blade made of silver. It’s mostly not used because, as veteran witchers say, “If you’re close enough to use it, you’re too close to death itself.”
Honestly, the plot is more or less ‘witchers doing witcher stuff and finding each other in the big world for some reason’.
If you really want a more solid plot, Desmond’s parentage has been left a mystery so we can play it with later. Making him the Ciri with William Miles being king would lead to an actual plot of the most powerful people in the world looking for him.
And hey, if Desmond is meant to be Ciri, he would have elder blood in him that has been mutated by becoming a Witcher, making him more powerful even if the powers of the elder blood should only be activated by women.
Or… you know… Desmond is an anomaly all by himself not because he’s the Ciri of the plot but because he’s the actual Desmond Miles from AC world that got deaged and transported to this world after the Solar Flare and he has no memories of it. The Wild Hunt is after him because he doesn’t belong in this world and becoming a Witcher granted him more powers than he should have.
… there was also this vague idea I had of Desmond being sold off to become a witcher but he ran away before he could become one then things happened and he became a sorcerer instead. Then he meets up Altaïr who is now a witcher and remembers him as the boy who ran away. But… that’s as far as I got. XD

The Hero's Journey in Video Games: An Odyssey Through Pixels and Polygons
From the golden era of 8-bit gaming to the high-definition marvels of today, video games have evolved exponentially in terms of graphics, gameplay mechanics, and narrative depth. Yet, amidst this evolution, an age-old narrative structure persists – The Hero's Journey. Often touted by writers and storytellers across different media, this formula finds a comfortable and effective home in the digital realm of video games.
The Classic Blueprint
The Hero's Journey, as conceptualized by Joseph Campbell in his 1949 work, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", describes a series of stages that a hero undergoes in a narrative. The journey consists of three main phases: Departure, Initiation, and Return. Throughout these phases, the hero encounters various challenges, mentors, allies, and adversaries, ultimately transforming them.
The 8-bit Era: Beginnings in Simplicity
In the days of the NES and Atari, narratives were often secondary to gameplay due to hardware limitations. Still, the essence of the Hero's Journey was evident.
Example: "The Legend of Zelda" (1986) Link's quest to rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon fits snugly into Campbell's framework. From his call to adventure when he obtains his sword, to trials against dungeon monsters, and ultimately the triumphant return after defeating Ganon, Link's journey is a textbook example.
The 16-bit and 32-bit Eras: Complexity Emerges
With improved hardware came the ability to portray more intricate narratives. RPGs particularly embraced the Hero's Journey, adding layers of emotional depth.
Example: "Final Fantasy VI" (1994) The ensemble cast each embarks on their hero's journey. Terra's struggle with her identity, Locke's quest for redemption, and Celes' battle with despair all exemplify different facets of the journey.
The 3D Era and Beyond: Immersive Epics
With the advent of 3D graphics, games could now immerse players more deeply into their worlds, allowing for a richer exploration of the Hero's Journey.
Example: "Mass Effect" Series (2007-2012) Commander Shepard's interstellar odyssey to save the galaxy from the Reapers hits every beat of the Hero's Journey. From the initial call to action to the final confrontation, players are deeply invested in Shepard's evolution as a hero.
Modern Gaming: Player Agency and Narrative Depth
Today's games give players more agency than ever before, allowing them to shape their hero's journey in unprecedented ways.
Example: "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" (2015) Geralt's journey in search of Ciri is filled with choices that affect the story's outcome. The trials he faces and the allies and enemies he encounters vary based on player decisions, offering a personalized Hero's Journey.
Conclusion
The Hero's Journey may be an age-old narrative structure, but it's evident that it remains as relevant today as ever, especially in the world of video gaming. As games continue to evolve, one can only imagine how this timeless tale will be reinvented in the digital adventures of tomorrow.
All sass and wisdom provided by Raz. Until the next byte! - Raz

What are your favourite 5 video games?
First off thank you so much for the question, as far as I can tell I don't think I've ever actually shared my fav video games on here.
This is in no particular order and will only include games I have beaten (so no Baldur's Gate 3 lol and I'll admit to cheating a bit by doing franchise for most instead of just choosing one lol):
The Last of Us Franchise - I absolutely love these games. I am someone that actually thinks Part 2 is better than part 1, not completely Part 1 story was tighter and more concise, but in terms of gameplay I thought Part 2 was so much better. I haven't played the Part 1 remake so idk how much of the gameplay was improved. But I consider Joel and especially Ellie some of the best characters in video games. And Abby gets too much hate. Joel can go around and kill a ton of people, but when one of those ppl comes after Joel suddenly it's a problem? Consequences.
Kingdom Hearts franchise - The first Kingdom Hearts is the video game that turned me into a true gamer I like to say. I played all the games when they came out and I always love them even as the story continually gets so complicated I gotta use youtube vids to tell me exactly what is going on haha
Mass Effect Original trilogy - If I had to choose an all time fav game it would probably be the original trilogy. This was my first Bioware game and the first game that I truly felt I was making real choices in the narrative and it blew my mind. And IMO Mass Effect 2 is truly one of the greatest games of all time. Won't go too much into my opinion on ME3, but in terms of the journey throughout 3 it was a SciFi war game and that was fun to play. This franchise reinvented itself with each game and that was cool. I really hope Bioware is able to make another one.
Horizon Franchise - Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are not underrated or undiscovered gems cause they are definitely well known games that have sold well and been received well. But the way they are talked about in gaming circles is so weird that they often feel like underappreciated games for sure. Aloy is one of the best protags in video games and the open world does what so many ppl want from open world games. Especially Forbidden West with a world that feels alive, side quest that are more than just fetch quest (though of course those still exist too) and awesome DLC story set after the main story. But the game gets getting released near bigger more popular games so it doesn't get the attention it deserves, and then too much of the attention these days is still just on "Aloy isn't a model with a perfect face." Idiots.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Okay now this one is probably controversial in AC fandom, but while I don't think this is the best AC game (that's still ACII imo) this is the game that I had the most fun playing and Kassandra is best girl. This is the game that got me back into the AC franchise after I stopped buying after I beat ACII. The world was so huge but I found so much to do and had to much fun and other than Cyberpunk 2077 I think this is the game I've put the most time playing cause I just love the world and characters so much. Also the combat in this to me was incredible. I absolutely loved the skills and despite what ppl say you absolutely can be a full assassin in this, it's just not with a hidden blade. At least I was able to take out full forts without being detected plenty of times once I had the right skills to do so.
Honorable mentions (Won't go into detail with these, but they deserve to be known as well):
Cyberpunk 2077
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Dead Island 2
Far Cry 6
The Outer Worlds
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
God of War franchise (PS4/PS5 games)
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
A Plague Tale: Innocence
FF7 Remake
Tomb Raider Franchise (Reboot)
And that's about it. Thank you!

Year End Wrap-ups
Why not. Here’s the first list. Games I played a lot of, but absolutely will not finish in the next week. Because they’re huge games.
cyberpunkdreams A Fallen London clone, i.e. a text RPG where the primary gameplay is clicking on storylets (i.e. "I am scouring the streets for resources") and slowly building up qualities and trading them for other qualities, i.e. a story-rich grind game. This certainly has a better balance of story-to-grind than the endless middle of Fallen London than I'm stuck on. It also does some interesting things with gender presentation and I'm not even 100% sure I hate how deliberate every major and many minor actions have to be (are you dressed appropriately to go to that place? Do you have enough bullets to do this thing?). It is, however, still a lot of grind and a lot of grind in a really aggressively unpleasant setting and a lot of grind in a game with permadeath. There's more than a seed of something really good here, but it's also kind of a drain to play in every way. Done with it again. Elden Ring Ah yes, the game that finally pushed me into the "oh, I can play difficult action RPGs" bucket and also, really, "I enjoy difficult action RPGs". I'm not great at playing on our PS5 and have just picked this up again on PC, the better to start it again with a somewhat-less magic-heavy build, and it's a fun and compelling game. Part of what makes it great is the horsie. Fantastic horsie. Fast as thought and jumps like a hare. Zipping across the map rather than careful, iterative progression is a joy and what makes this From Software game by far the most accessible. Kynseed A life sim more than a farming sim, and sort of a hodgepodge of systems at that. The narrative appears to be largely "uh, keep engaging with our systems and numbers will tick up", but it is enjoyable for all that. The combat is chunky and on the difficult side, and the pixel art is incredible and if you don't really feel like farming, it's a pretty small percentage of what you do. The mini-games -- well, they're trying to rebalance them. One day I may successfully make jam. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Second attempt's the charm, I guess. It's a marvelous game to wander around, but the horsie is not as good as in Elden Ring, which is a bit of a problem. On the other hand, glider. Wonderful glider. Get up high and go soaring over the landscape. There is also a plot which is engaging, it is, but I do honestly find any interruption to exploring the map a comparative chore. Monster Hunter Rise The ultimate kill-beautiful-monsters-to-make-pants simulator and it's a lot of fun with great designs. Some real pathos in killing these magnificent creatures, though. Humans-as-endurance predators. Sometimes hard to hear the frustrated, furious wail as I corner some great fur-or-feathered scaly thing in its den yet again. Nioh 2 Hard-as-shit, but more generous than a from software game in giving you tons of gear and anima-soul-bits. Colorful, too, palette of greens and reds, over-the-top storytelling that's still elliptical and hard to follow. You turn into a yokai but it helps less than you might think. :( A good time. Meditative in a strange way. Lots of weapon variety. also dress-up elements. Red Dead Redemption 2 The great cowboy life-sim and dress-up game where you do in fact have to shoot people sometimes and ruin your groove of dominos-playing, theater-watching, and sunset ambling. Should actually approach the plot again. Horsies are of course essential. Don’t leave home without one. Stardew Valley Finally dug into this 'un, but didn't quite complete a year of game time on the Switch. Gonna restart on PC with some mods to get the full-plus-extra experience now. I'm starting to sort of get the groove of farming sims, if I still don't understand why this particular one sits so high for so many people. Really like fishing mini-games, maybe?? Witcher 3 Wild Hunt I've played it before! Here I am playing it again. Turns out I forgot huge chunks of this huge-ass RPG with dozens and dozens of short stories appended to its main quest and it's a pleasure to revisit, even if I don't have any appreciation for the Bloody Baron storyline in This Year of Hells. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 I may still want it to be Xenoblade X, but I actually like this cast of 3, even if I do get less interested in the main plot as it continues (a common problem). The main antagonists are appealingly bonkers and making each settlement its own node with its own successive sidequests is a good touch. The landscape is beautiful and endless. I write about it and do want to go back to it. Perhaps after Harvestella??
