The Bat-Man Recap #7, Part 1

Detective Comics #33 is exciting because we get the origins of Batman randomly before a Death Ray story. I have decided to split up this recap so I can talk about this big moment, that's only two pages. The death of the Waynes will become a massive thing, but they are not even named in this story.

By they, I mean Martha. Thomas Wayne died over a necklace. It's just a random mugging and Mummy Wayne isn't even wearing a pearl necklace. You are Rich, sir. Rich enough to make the police find that necklace. A reward or something. It's a nice necklace, but not to die over.

In future, we will have proof that both Bruce's parents were intelligent but no signs here. Your life is the most valuable thing you have, especially when you're rich and that necklace is not gonna help you feed yourself. The mugger on the other hand...

They tell us his eyes are wide with shock but wait till they show us them.

This is a favourite panel of mine. I am a bad person. You should know that. At least when it comes to making fun of fictional traumatised child millionaires. I think it's so comical because it's next to some well-done panels. The next illustration looks great with the shadow choice and perfectly shows the emotion that Bruce is going through,.

Committed little thing, isn't? Now, you're wondering what else makes a Batman.

I didn't edit that. That's the whole order giving to what makes Bruce able to be Batman. It does acknowledge that Bruce is rich. It always acknowledged that. You might be thinking, why a Bat?

Personally, I think is that this is the right origin. No thoughts, just he saw it when he was thinking of a costume. An alternative universe, has Bruce Wayner as The Moth-man.

Fun fact, Mothman does actually get his name from Batman. Mothman does not exist without him. That cryptid stories exist without Batman, but he wouldn't be the same cryptid that the internet loves so much.

Three weeks ago, you received an envelope. It had been pushed under your office door and was marked in ornate script with the words, “Of Greatest Urgency.” Intrigued, you grabbed your trusty sword-shaped letter opener from a cluttered desk drawer and tore into it. Inside, you found the kind of letter that is basically an urban legend in your line of work. Richard Hawthorne, millionaire art magnate, was retaining your services to investigate a murder. One that had not yet happened. His own. Included was a huge check and a set of security codes to access both the gates of his private community and the back door of his residence, 34 Hush Lane, in the event of his death. Your assignment: if anything were to happen to him, investigate immediately and determine for certain whether it was due to natural or nefarious causes.

Artful Deceit was made in a custom engine, to be run on a C64 platform, submitted to the 2023 Edition of the IFComp. You will need a C64 machine or C64 emulator (like VICE) to run. The game includes additional documents, a manual, and game items (pdfs). The external walkthrough bundle includes hints, maps, and a walkthrough with additional notes.

Artful Deceit is an old school parser, made for the Commodore 64 machine (or a C64 emulator), where you are a detective hired to solve a murder, one the victim had been expecting. As the game has specific commands, reading the manual is highly recommended before starting the game.

I managed to find some clues on my own, before using the walkthrough. The game crashed* about 2/3rd through the game. *not sure if it was because of the emulator or the game itself.

Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to parsers, and my frame of reference on what is or should be in an old-school parser rest essentially on what other people say about certain games. There are old-school and old-school parsers... like the ones who will only run on 8-bit machines that haven't been around since the 90s. This was the first time I dared to try out a game like this.

Even with an emulator, this was honestly an experience just loading the game and faffing about. There's something quite charming about those retro-style games (even the cluckiness of it or the loading of the command added to it), a style you can emulate visually with the likes of Adventuron nowadays. But it feels different with games like this one - sort of keeping some traditional alive in a way.

Aside from the novelty of it all, which was quite a lot for me, the game itself is a corny who-dunnit murder mystery, with a bit of a cliché revelation (but in a good way, it fits the vibe). There are some neat puzzles with hinting items close by, the ANALYZE mechanic was fun (I did send the other detective on wild goose-chases...), and I was glad to find I didn't need to read some of the clues on the tiny screen. But it wasn't too long or too large, it was just enough to solve the mystery, and seemed large enough to not feel unsatisfied.

But old-parsers also means frustrating commands, especially when trying to interact with some elements (you need to type out the adjectives, all of them) or conversing with the suspects (I barely managed to get a response from them). It's not always quite clear when an item can be open or not (like that painting) or why you have to take some objects to read them (but that might be an old-parser thing). But the thing that frustrated me the most was the maze-like environment, especially in the manor. There are so many empty rooms where there is nothing to do... It was a bit disorienting at times. Even if the map helped a bit, I still think there were too many rooms...

I'm not against trying other games like this one in the future (hopefully they don't crash on me...). This was fun and new!

Finished week one of college and broke as a joke, so as compensation here's some stuff I've had in the back of my head that I'm thinking of writing at some point when I'm done with my other many...many projects that I've been neglecting.

- Persona x Danganronpa au - an au made by @/shsl-shipper-gamer-fangirl on Tumblr where Danganronpa characters are in the persona universe. (I discovered it a long time ago and am on a persona kick after watching an analysis video.)

-Edit old fanfics maybe consider deleting a few from when I was young and unaware of the importance of basic education.

-Change some things around in my stories such as my fanmade p6 so they make more sense to the characters.

-Fugou Keiji (aka the millionaire detective): Balance Unlimited x Persona au

-Dangan persona au (in which the characters in persona are in the Danganronpa universe.)

- Danganronpa x RWBY au revival because it's been awhile.

-Jjba x RWBY au revival because it's been a LONG while

-JJBA x Persona au in which jjba characters have personas (which in general doesn't make much of a difference.)

-Lore for my og series Kore (remember Jordyn? neither do I.)

-Work on the outline of my now deleted Fangan (I just didn't think it through that much when I first posted.)

-Actually make outlines for things.

This isn't a promise that these things will come soon but they are things I am really interested in doing at some point and am interested in talking to other people about.
