Tarots with Utena, an amateuristic analysis of RGU through Tarot imagery (and fanart)

Part 1: The Lovers

Disclaimer: I highly recommend you read this after you've watched the series and while being in mood for searching all the little symbols that it contains. There are so many amazing analysis pieces floating around the internet, but all these (including mine) contain heavy heavy spoilers. Also, unrelated but i'm a bit self concious about giving you my train of thought heheh.

Some kind of prologue

I really love RGU, always coming back to it no mattter what i'm currently fixating on, to find more and more meanings, symbols, theories on this complex piece. Fanart is processing and I am processing hard right now, combining the tarots too (another favorite way of understanding the world+myself).

This analysis is based on other pieces I read online, hours of talks with fellow fans and on the intentions I set while choosing the specific tarot cards and depicting them. I used the Rider Waite deck, and I can always link some articles/blogs etc. I'm based on. The discourse online is huge! Original text was in greek but in the end here's the translation, for accessibility reasons. >.<

The Lovers

Utena and Anthy are the perfect Lovers. Often, they are compared to Gemini, two sides of the same coin, complementary to each other. The Lovers is the card of Gemini.

Talking about the imagery of the card itself, on the first level we have our main characters: Utena (Adam), Anthy (Eve) and the Prince (Angel). The three of them are all linked.

Canonically, Utena is taller than Anthy, though here they seem about the same height. Both of them are wearing their dueling outfits, at the time that Utena is about to fight for Anthy's hand once again (even though she doesn't really understand that her driving force is love, she's oblivious after all, a pink brick etc etc).

Utena, even though seemingly ready to fight, looks a bit lost in her feelings, looking for the receiver of her love. Her eyes on Anthy, sword in hand loosely, the white rose to signify her pure heart and nobility. She's not sad, just a bit disoriented. What to do when suddenly you are to fill the shoes of a Prince, a (Clueless) Hero? How all these could make easily sense through her poor girlhood? Her only way through, is coming closer to her supposed lover. A wind blow makes the rose petals travel to Anthy.

On the other hand, Anthy, despite being in the archetypical position of receiving and giving back love and care, has her eyes somewhere else. She remains a mirror for Utena's love, (actually a mirror for each character's feelings, but more on that on other cards probably). Right now we don't know a lot about her. After all, the Lovers is No6 in the tarot, chronologically it is very early for us to know, we can only feel and observe for now. She knows so much more and in this card she's daring to give us a glimpse. while looking at that higher power, the Angel. They are similar in some ways.

The Angel over their head, is no other than the Prince. Dios gives the kiss of power to Utena, almost everytime she's duelling for her love. The power to revolutionize the world. In the card, he's dressed exactly as the Angel depicted in the Rider Waite, not only keeping similar color scheme, but holding his whole role of the entity that protects, supports and blesses. The enigma of his identity stays strong in that way, the light against darkness.

The light of the Αngel, helps us give a better look at the surroundings of our card: Eden is truly real, we see it especially in the first episodes of the series, the calming colours of Ohtori Academy, the green grass, the blue skies without clouds, the classical buildings of the Academy. Blissful! We see in the distance the Academy itself, the bridge, the buildings the phallic tower. Our lovers are standing far away from this institution, they don't need the phallic imagery, everything is real but not here yet, (does this feel menacing?)

In Rider Waite, we see that behind Eve we have the tree with the snake, and behind Adam a tree with flame-like fruits, a symbol of his passion and longing for her. In the RGU universe, the rose is the symbol of love. Before the duels, the transformation sequence of Anthy features a rose tree in different stages of growth, symbolizing the way our character'S feelings grow for the other one (for silly Utena!). We have the tree growing through Anthy's school uniform, then having rosebuds which bloom into beautiful roses, a whole garden of them. We realise that Anthy was fully aware of her feelings since early in the series, unlike someone else <.<

Back to our card, I really wanted to play with the sense of time here, in order to shed some light to Anthy's concerns about all this situation, trying to resolve the enigma of her character. So I decided to show her emotional progression going slower than Utena's, resulting the paradox of having an Anthy of the past, having her first feels for Utena, unable yet to take her eyes away from the holy figure. At the same time Utena of the future, with a fully fledged love and desire, is reaching for her loved one, to bring her to the present (again the rose petals).

The card's space is limited and our characters are trapped in it, tragically unaware of their figurine-like self, even our so-called angel. Their feelings though, are limitless.
