Meet this adorable sleepy boy Solomon! He was part of a confiscation last week along with 9 of his family members and between the 10 of them there's not a single full tail. These 10 were feeder breeders kept in a bin with a layer of feces for bedding, a bit of bird food, some mostly eaten tails, and a few When the Animal Control Officer confronted the owner he said it was fine because they were just feeders. Obviously no one thought that was "fine" so the rats were taken by Animal Control. They were released from investigation hold this morning so we are spaying and neutering everyone today so the family can be together. These rats have a lot of trauma. All have parts of their tails eaten and most just have a stub left. They have infected wounds on their tails too which will require antibiotics, pain meds and wound care. They honestly probably ate each other's tails to survive which is actually pretty polite. If you have to eat your friends I guess the tail is a good place to start. Despite all they have been through they're actually incredibly sweet rats both to humans and each other which I think is sorta incredible. I follow lots of animal rescue blogs, and @the_pipsqueakery has always been one of my favorites. Rats, as many of you know, are my favorite animal (closely followed by dogs) and rodents/small animals have a special place in my heart. This wonderful charity has created and shared this beautiful image of inclusion and love, and while the majority of the response is positive...there has also been hateful cowardice and backlash. A horrible version of this original image was made to spew hate (which I won’t link). No matter what racists, Nazis and other yellow-bellied shitholes will try to say and do: they cannot win over love and tolerance. Anti-human policies will never win in the end. OMG, finally I can share my love of dumb critters who love baths (capys and Ian) and dumb critters who love to pee in pools (capys and Mickey). I highly suggest @thepipsqueakery, a small animal rescue in Indiana, for all your capy and related creature needs. They currently have two capys, Vinny and Milo, plus a zillion patagonian cavies, which look like a cross between a rabbit, deer, and dog, they just rescued. Not to mention hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, groundhogs, and a whole buncha ducks.

Thank you for sharing! What a great resource for all my capybara picture requirements.

Also this mammoth guy is 100% Ian sitting on Mickey's lap and refusing to move despite Mickey complaining a lot about Ian crushing him. 😌 He just likes to feel baby sometimes and that is okay.

It's a boy! And his name is Reece. ☺ This is an introduction that's nearly 3 months late but life happens. I know it's been awhile but I hope this cutie makes up for it. He came to me all the way from Florida back in early June. @omghamsters and I trekked all the way from NH out to @hamhamhouse in PA to pick up a group of hamsters that were part of @the_pipsqueakery 's #FloridaHamsterFiasco intake who were bound for adopters in New England. He's the first male Syrian ever to be in residence at Li'l Pocket Bears, so he's kind of a big deal. He's very sweet, ridiculously soft, and highly squishable. Oh - and he likes long cuddles on da beach. (PS: He was safely handled during this shot. Whenever Josie is missing you can always count on finding her in my dresser. She opens the drawer, climbs in, closes it on herself and goes to sleep. I honestly sorta feel like joining her right now because I just found out that it's going to cost $1,520 to get the new building hooked up to a water meter. The constant small costs of construction just keep coming and I'm just ready to lose my cool over it. Like besides the water hook-up there's a handful of light fixtures we still need (probably under $200), then there were toilets (which were only $300 for all 3), there were 3 sink cabinets at $89 each (the rest of our cabinets we got used), we had to buy 2 water heaters at $450, we still need storm doors, and apparently you can't just skip gutters. I really thought I had this all under control but the couple hundred here and the couple thousand there are messing up my carefully planned budget. So anyway, I'm gonna go hide in my dresser and chew up my clothes with Josie. Then I'm going to figure out what I can sell to make all this work. Someone out there definitely wants to buy my kidney, right? If you don't want my kidney could you toss a couple dollars towards "The Alex Keeps her Kidney Fund." Life without Mortimer seems absolutely unthinkable. Alas, despite my abject misery and my wallowing in bed life at The Pipsqueakery will have to go on eventually. I'll have to save more mortimers (aka lethal white guinea pigs). I'll save more animals with dental disease, including the 3 bunnies coming home tonight, and I'll have to find some way to honor his memory. Our first big loss was Pipsqueak, so we created The Pipsqueakery. What will I do to honor Mortimer? I don't really know yet. It'll be something that makes a difference because Mortimer's tiny little life mattered. Anyway, I don't really have words to describe what I'm feeling at the moment. It's not good, and it's not okay, but eventually I'll find a way to live with this new reality. Thank you all so much for your kind words. I really want to adopt an ex-laboratory mouse or rat, are there rescue groups who take in these animals or should I try contacting places that use them directly? I'm worried if I ask if they experiment with these animals they'll think I'm part of an animal rights group trying to do harm to them.

Unfortunately, I’m fairly certain that’s not possible. I know that sometimes dogs used for research will be rehomed after they are no longer needed (depending on the research done). But I’ve never heard of lab rodents being rehomed - if they live longer than the research protocol lasts, as far as I know, they’re either used for another protocol or euthanized. With the numbers that are used for research, I don’t think anyone has the time or resources to put into rehoming them, especially with their relatively short lives. 

But there are still plenty of other mice & rats that are in need of homes that you could rescue! You could contact @thepipsqueakery - they mainly take in hamsters, but also have some rats (though Idk how many are up for adoption). If they’re not close enough to you, they may know of other rodent rescue groups that are closer, I know they’ve worked with several during their last huge hamster rescue.
