If you're a Western convert to an Eastern religion, it can be difficult to get rid of that little Greek philosopher in your ear. You have to challenge what you were conditioned to believe is true and learn to restructure much of how you see the world. The transformation is quite profound though, and can honestly be really liberating.
Leave Plato behind, he can't hurt you anymore.

"Does Master Gotama have any position at all?" "A 'position,' Vaccha, is something that a Tathagata has done away with. What a Tathagata sees is this: 'Such is form, such its origination, such its disappearance; such is feeling, such its origination, such its disappearance; such is perception...such are fabrications...such is consciousness, such its origination, such its disappearance.' Because of this, I say, a Tathagata — with the ending, fading away, cessation, renunciation, & relinquishment of all construings, all excogitations, all I-making & mine-making & obsessions with conceit — is, through lack of clinging/sustenance, released."

Worldly Way And Liberation, by Ajahn Chah
Our minds aren’t peaceful because of all our old habits. 'Worldly Way And Liberation', by Ajahn Chah http://wp.me/pFy3u-1JQ
Some people die because of their desires; others nearly do—that’s how to be stuck in the way of the world. Worldly wisdom seeks after the senses and their objects. However wise the search may be, it’s wise only in a worldly sense. No matter how appealing the object, it’s appealing only in a worldly sense. It isn’t the happiness of liberation; it won’t free you from the world. We have come to…

The Quest for Buddhism (94)
Buddhist cosmology
Origin of the concept
The Buddhist cosmology as presented in commentaries and works of Abhidharma ('Study on the Dharma', 3rd century BCE and later) in both Theravada and Mahayana traditions, and is the end-product of an analysis and reconciliation of cosmological comments found in the Buddhist sutras and vinaya traditions.
No single sutra sets out the entire structure of the universe, but in several early Buddhist sutras, the Buddha describes other worlds and states of existence, as well as the origin and destruction of the universe.
The order of the planes are found in various discourses of Gautama Buddha in the Sutta Pitaka. In the Saleyyaka Sutta of the Majjhima Nikaya the Buddha mentioned the planes above the human plane in ascending order. In several suttas in the Anguttara Nikaya, the Buddha described the causes of rebirth in these planes in the same order.
The synthesis of these data into a single comprehensive system must have taken place early in the history of Buddhism.
