Roundtable Presentation: Guess Who? (2005)
Tumblr media
"Guess Who" is a 2005 romantic comedy film directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan. The movie is a loose remake of the 1967 film "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner." The story revolves around a young interracial couple, Theresa Jones (played by Zoe Saldana) and Simon Green (played by Ashton Kutcher), who decide to introduce Theresa's parents to Simon during a family gathering. The twist comes when Percy Jones (played by Bernie Mac), is unaware of his daughter's boyfriend's race. The film explores themes of racial and cultural differences, comedic misunderstandings, and the challenges faced by the couple as they navigate their relationship amid family tensions. The movie combines humor and social commentary to address issues of race and acceptance in a lighthearted manner.
youtube
This movie differs from the original in the sense that instead of a white girl introducing her black fiancé to her family, a black girl is introducing her white fiancé to her family. Bernie Mac embodies a father figure who deals with universal concerns such as protecting his daughter and grappling with generational differences. He constantly bombards Simon(Ashton Kutcher) with questions such as sports he plays, his credit score, if he has a secure job, and refuses to let him share a room with Theresa during their time at their home. Simon feels as if he is being put under a lot of pressure, Theresa and her mother also pleads with her father to ease up on him. We can see that Percy(Bernie Mac) is having a lot of difficulty coming to terms with the fact that his daughter is dating a white boy compared to Theresa's mother. He tells his coworkers she is dating a Black man who has graduated from Howard and skipped out on playing basketball to become a doctor.
Tumblr media
There are certain stereotypes that the film has. Percy is a very overbearing father and Simon is portrayed as the "victim" of his constant badgering. Simon also further victimizes himself because he is afraid of being seen as racist. There is a scene when Simon meets Theresa's grandfather during a family dinner and they ask him to tell "racist jokes", which is takes a weird turn in the scene.
youtube
Overall, this differs significantly from the original, where the focus was on addressing more profound issues of racism within the storyline. This modern version attempts to bring out the comedic side of interracial relationships, which I do not think would be possible if the races were switched as they are in the original.

Well yeah, that's always been the case.  People are always looking for permission hate on a rando person, character, or group of people.  Social media just make it more obvious and easier to join the mob. Before social media, fans used to rent billboard to advertise their hatred at a fictional character or real person. Homicide: Life of the Street fans took an instant contempt towards a new character Detective Paul Falsone and rented "I hate Falson" billboards.  During the Beverly Hills 90210 run in the ‘90s, fangirls ran “I hate Brenda” newsletter that became a movement.  There would be gatherings that included inflatables meant to look like Shannen Doherty that people could hit with a bats and batons.  I guarantee you none of these people hate-hate the characters/actors, they just want an excuse to be part of a group that allows them to act out in approved not-nice manners.
Remember kids, it is the fans that “love” their idols that have been known to physically hurt or even kill celebrities:
Singer Selena Quintanilla was killed by a fan
Actress Rebecca Schaeffer was killed by a fan
Actress Theresa Saldana was stabbed 10 times by a fan
Rapper Plies was assaulted and thrown off the stage by a fan

Theresa Saldana became known for her roles in “Raging Bull” and “I Wanna Hold your Hand” but it was her role in the film “Defiance” which gained her the unwanted attention of an obsessive fan called Arthur Richard Jackson, who lived in Aberdeen, Scotland.
In 1982, Jackson traveled to America and hired a private investigator who managed to obtain the phone number of Theresa’s mother. He called her up under the pretense of being an assistant for a director who wanted to offer Theresa a role in an upcoming movie. Her mother gave Jackson the address and he made his way to her home and waited outside for her to exit. Almost as soon as Theresa came out of the front door, Jackson stabbed her ten times. The attack was so vicious that the blade of the knife bent.
Theresa miraculously survived the attack. A deliveryman named Jeffrey Fern had witnessed the attack and ran to Theresa’s aid. He managed to grab the knife off Jackson and subdue him until police arrived. Jackson was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the stabbing and while behind bars, he frequently send threatening letters to both Theresa and Jeffrey.
After being released, Jackson was extradited to the U.K. to stand trial for an earlier, unrelated, murder. He was found not-guilty by reason of insanity and was confined to a psychiatric hospital until his death in 2004.
