Happy birthday to Californian Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud who came to painting from an early career as an animator and commercial artist. By the early 1960s, he began depicting the everyday items that would become his signature works—baked goods, toys, gumball machines, and deli fare—rendered as colorful, lushly painted surfaces. i finished this a couple weeks ago but forgot to post (again). this time, these custard tarts from the bakery. fun fact: i bought them saturday and painted them the following night for the base. i was just so busy i couldn’t find time to paint again until two weeks later; obviously, i was worried that these tarts would have grown mold during that time, but it looked just like when i had bought it! i dont think i’ll eat from the bakery again > good for painting, bad for eating.

I’m so sad to hear about Wayne Thiebaud’s passing :’( He lived to 101 though, which is pretty impressive!!
For years, he’s been one of my favorite painters, and I’m so inspired by his use of color and texture! I feel so fortunate that I got to see his exhibition of clown paintings at the Paul Thiebaud Gallery in SF back in February 2020 (right before everything shut down!!), and I can’t believe I’d never posted the pictures here??
