love your blog bby!! i was just thinking about how rafe would react to you being so upset at him when he cancels on y’all’s night in together. you’re like full on pouting as he’s trying to leave. i just know he’s gonna give in like omgggggg
Tumblr media
“that’s the third time barry has called.. just answer it.” you pulled away from rafe, your boyfriend pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration as he answered the call, putting barry on speaker. “i was in the middle of something, asshole, this better be good.” rafe huffed into the phone. “oooh, give me all the details later.” you rolled your eyes, laughing to yourself as barry started speaking again. “but on a serious note, we actually have a problem here..” he trailed off. rafe sighed, “what kind of problem?”
“you know those guys we met up with on the mainland? i was recounting the money they gave us, and there’s five counterfeit bills.” your eyes widened as rafe shot up from the bed, slipping his shirt back on. “‘the fuck you mean there’s five counterfeit bills?! are you sure?” you were quick to put on your robe, following rafe to the living room. “yeah, i’m sure, man. no blue stripe and i used a marker.” rafe cursed under his breath. “i say we go back tonight.” you couldn’t help the pout from forming on your lips, your boyfriend meeting your glistening eyes. “..tonight?” rafe could see right through you, the pleading look on your face pulling on his heartstrings.
“yes, tonight! do you really think they’re gonna stay in town after pulling this shit on us?” you shook your head, trying your hardest to keep rafe home. “alright, i’ll be there.” you deflated, shoulders falling in defeat as he hung up. “rafe..” your voice was small, the sound of his keys making your eyes water. “you’re always with barry! can you be mine just for one night?” you pulled on his arm. rafe turned around, planting a kiss on your temple. “please, baby. i’ll be back before you know it. promise.” before you could object, he walked out the door.
you whimpered, making your way outside as you watched rafe slowly move towards the end of the driveway. “don’t look back, don’t look back, don’t look back,” he whispered to himself, a groan erupting from his mouth when he glanced in the rear view mirror. there you were, your eyes full of tears, lips all swollen from the intense make out session that occurred before his phone had to ring. he put his foot on the brake, watching the thin material of your robe move freely in the night air. you were always such a good girl for him. everytime he came home, he was greeted with the biggest hug and kiss, your excitement making him feel like he was important; like he was special.
“fuck it.” you smiled, jumping on your toes as he started reversing back in his original spot. rafe decided he was not only going to turn his phone off, but leave it in the truck altogether so he could solely focus on you. he didn’t even get to open the door all the way before you wrapped your arms around his neck, clinging to him while he smiled against your skin. “you’re staying?” you gazed up at him, stroking the underside of his jaw. “yeah, yeah. ‘now go meet me inside, i want you on all fours.”

Y/N never understood why people went to war or drove themselves insane for the sake of love. She didn’t understand the feeling of being consumed by love and was always able to put words to what she thought it was. It’s a chemical reaction in one’s brain that makes them think they are meant to be with someone for the rest of their life. But then comes Rafe Cameron into her life and she suddenly finds herself unable to describe what she feels for him. She knows she will start the third world war to keep him safe or lose herself in her own mind if he asks her to. Now, all she knows is his dirty blonde hair and his ocean-blue eyes, always consuming her thoughts and heart. And she doesn’t hate the thought of it.
As she walks through Cameron Development’s office, the heel of her work shoes reverberates through the empty office. Everyone else has already gone home except for her boyfriend, who is working late for his father, so she thought she would bring him dinner. She holds the brown paper bag of his favourite pasta in her hand and she knocks gently on his door. She can hear the stress in his voice as he allows her to come into his office. He looks up at the sound of the door opening and gives her a gentle smile, “Hey, Princess. What are you doing here?” “I wanted to have dinner with you, so I brought us pasta,” she holds up the bag to him and places it on his desk. He moves his stuff out of the way, so they both have space to eat. “Thank you, Princess. That is so thoughtful,” he kisses her cheek, helping her take out the food from the bag. She shrugs, “It was no problem. I was in the neighbourhood.” The picture frame on his desk catches her eye as she places the napkins beside it.
The picture is of her, bundled up to keep the cold from nipping at her nose. She was wearing his hat, gloves and scarf because she was too stubborn to bring her own. It was the picture Rafe had taken of her last Christmas when they checked out the Christmas village on the mainland. The setting was something out of a snow globe. Snow perfectly dusted the trees and buildings. The shops on the streets were absolutely picturesque. The final touch to the holiday town was the soft Christmas music playing throughout the streets. Rafe had just finished taking the picture of her and he put his phone back in his pocket. He took her hot chocolate out of her hand, placing it on the table beside him. “Dance with me,” he whispered, leading her a little more onto the street.
And she did with one hand in his and the other on his shoulders. He mimics her arm placement, except with one of his arms around her waist, bringing her closer to him. She placed her head on his chest and listened to the way his heartbeat. They danced like that for what felt like hours but it was actually just a few minutes. Y/N thinks it was at that moment that she started to believe in love and she hasn’t looked back since.

Have I ranted before about how the Devil's Square makes no fucking sense?
So I'm trying to write the next part of Batgirl, Repentant, and more fool me, that means I need to go back and re-read parts of Batgirl (2009) for research. And like what always happens when I do that, I noticed yet another detail that stops working when you stop to think about it for even a moment.
Because see, on the second page of the third issue, we get these two moments in rapid succession.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scarecrow's hideout is in "Gotham's Western Quadrant, the Devil's Square," established in the previous issue as a bad neighborhood, quote, "Otherwise known as 'Thunderdome.'" This place is treated like it's a Big Stinkin' Deal for the first two arcs (maybe the first year? I don't remember clearly and I don't want to go any further down this rabbit hole than I have) of this series, but nothing about it makes sense.
We are never ever given a clear reason why this neighborhood is supposedly such a uniquely terrible place, but it's supposedly so bad that it's worth making a whole terrible philosophy lecture out of why criminals would choose to stay there.
But the closest thing we get is that, at one point, Professor Exposition describes it as "a demilitarized zone."
Tumblr media
Which does not make any goddamn sense because that would require Gotham City as a whole to be the location of an ongoing military conflict. Y'know, like the one between the Koreas.
I can only assume, given Brian Miller et al's tendency to do zero research on even the most basic of plot elements (see also: labeling all of Stephanie's obviously freshman-level college classes with 400-level designations intended for seniors or grad students) that what he actually meant here was autonomous zone. Like the CHAZ, as imagined by your Republican uncle. The implication being that this is an area of town that's been completely abandoned by police and emergency services, reducing it to a lawless wasteland where criminals roam free. (A no man's land, you might say. 🙄)
EXCEPT. APPARENTLY. LITERALLY ONE ISSUE LATER. We get the panels I started this post off with, where Steph arrives at Scarecrow's hide-out in the Devil's Square and we get EXPLICIT confirmation that the police will be there in five minutes.
That's all to say nothing of the fact that it being "Gotham's Western Quadrant" that's been cut off makes zero sense on its face. Besides implying that's an entire QUARTER of the city that's just been completely abandoned, Steph at one point describes it as being "on the west bank of the Gotham River."
There is no west bank of the Gotham River. Gotham is on a series of islands off the coast of New Jersey. The west bank of the Gotham River is the MAINLAND where Bristol and the suburbs are.
Gotham's geography is super fluid and can change from book to book, but it being on an island connected only by a series of bridges was a big deal in this era and the only reason the No Man's Land concept even worked. If you're gonna rip that plot off, Miller, you gotta use an eastern neighborhood. Or a northern one. Or even a southern tip. Anything but west. That's like saying there's an east side of Chicago.

A Ukrainian security official has claimed Kyiv’s responsibility for an attack on the bridge linking the annexed Crimean peninsula to the Russian mainland – a vital supply line for Russia’s war effort in Ukraine and a personal project for President Vladimir Putin.
The nearly 12-mile crossing, also known as the Kerch Bridge, is the longest in Europe and holds huge strategic and symbolic importance for Moscow. Monday’s attack on the bridge was the second since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, after a fuel tanker exploded while crossing it in October.
A source in Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) told CNN this attack was a joint operation of the SBU and Ukraine’s naval forces. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because they had not received authorization to speak on the record.
Two people were killed and their daughter wounded in the attack, according to Russian-appointed officials.
Two strikes were reportedly carried out around 3 a.m. local time Monday (8 p.m. ET Sunday), damaging part of the bridge, according to Telegram channel Grey Zone, which supports the Wagner mercenary group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Explosions were heard around 3:04 a.m. and 3:20 a.m. local time, Grey Zone and popular Crimean blogger ‘TalipoV Online Z’ said on Telegram.
CNN is unable to verify those reports.
The governor of Russia’s Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, confirmed that two people were killed and a third person was injured in the incident.
Gladkov said a girl was injured and her parents were killed while traveling in the car that was damaged in the incident.
“There is damage to the roadway on spans of the Crimean Bridge,” Russia’s Transport Ministry said on Telegram. The spans on a bridge are the lengths between the support piers. Images showed a partial collapse of a section of the roadway portion of the bridge, which also carries railroad tracks.
On his Telegram channel, Vladimir Konstantinov, head of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea, blamed the damage to the bridge on a Ukrainian attack.
“Tonight the terrorist regime in Kyiv committed a new crime – it attacked the Crimean bridge,” Konstantinov said.
“The railroad track was not damaged by the strike,” Konstantinov added.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday that Putin has been briefed on the incident, and that Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin will today travel to Crimea to further assess the situation.
“We know the reasons and those behind this terrorist act,” Peskov said. “This will require further composure and additional measures and work from all of us. No other measures have been discussed at the moment.”
Videos posted on Telegram by Baza, Grey Zone and other Crimean news outlets appeared to show part of the bridge collapsed and a vehicle damaged in the incident.
Emergency responders and law enforcement have been dispatched to the scene, said Sergey Aksenov, the Russia-appointed head of Crimea.
Aksenov urged residents and those traveling to and from Crimea to choose an alternative land route.
The bridge is a critical artery for supplying Crimea with both its daily needs and supplies for the military, in addition to fuel and goods for civilians.
A Russian-backed official of the peninsula, Elena Elekchyan, said Crimea is well supplied with fuel, food and industrial goods.
Denis Pushilin, the Russia-backed head of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic, said on Telegram that he had spoken with his Crimean counterpart to introduce measures “to ensure the faster passage of checkpoints on the administrative border.” Pushilin said the nightly curfew was being suspended to allow “round-the-clock” travel to Crimea, and that he was working to ensure the availability of fuel at gas stations along the route.
Last year, another huge blast partially damaged the crossing, causing parts of it to collapse.
The bridge was severely damaged on October 8 when a fuel tanker exploded and destroyed a large section of the road. Responding to the attack – which took place the day after Putin turned 70 – Ukrainian officials posted a video of the bridge in flames alongside a video of Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy Birthday, Mister President.”
Russia built the 19-kilometer bridge at a cost of around $3.7 billion after Moscow illegally annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014. It was the physical expression of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objective to take over Ukraine and bind it to Russia forever.
After the October blast, Russia quickly set about repairs to the span. It was fully reopened to traffic in February.
Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar made what appeared to be the clearest admission yet that Ukrainian forces were responsible for the October attack.
A Ukraine official on Monday said damage to the bridge could hamper Russian logistics.
“Any logistical problems are additional complications for the occupiers, which create potential advantages for the Ukrainian defense forces,” Representative of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine Andrii Yusov said to Ukraine’s public broadcaster, Suspilne.
Hours after the explosions on the bridge, Russia announced that it is allowing a deal struck to enable the export of Ukrainian grain to expire, sparking fears of global food insecurity.
Peskov also told reporters that the decision to allow the deal to lapse was not related to Ukraine’s claimed strike on the bridge.
“These are absolutely unrelated events,” he said. “Even before this terrorist attack, the position was declared by President Putin. And I repeat again, as soon as the part of the Black Sea agreements concerning Russia is fulfilled, Russia will immediately return to the implementation of the deal.”

The Yellow Face
This is the third tale from Memoirs i.e. the second published volume.
"The Park" is likely Regent's Park. This was also home to what is now called ZSL London Zoo, which features in Dracula as well.
Yellow fever is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Not something mainland Britain really has a problem with - gnats and midges are more our thing. As a result, we do not routinely vaccinate here, although you can get a jab for travelling to affected areas.
But Victorian audiences would have been familiar with it via reports from the Empire.
Like Lee in "The Twisted Lip", Pinner and Norbury are two small communities that became suburbs due to urban development in the first half of the 20th century and are both in Greater London.
Pinner itself had a 'Tube' station; the Metropolitan Railway having reached there in 1885. Sitting in Zone 5, the Met bought up the land around the railway and then developed it, later using the branding "Metro-land" and selling housing to middle-class commuters. This would be in the future though.
Norbury sits on the London to Brighton main line and is served by stopping trains from London Bridge or (in peak hours) Victoria. It sits in Zone 3, giving you an idea of just how far inside the city it now is - less than seven miles from Charing Cross. The line would later be increased to four tracks in 1903 and electrified in 1925. You could get a train from Victoria in 20 minutes at the time. It's around the same today or a bit longer, although much more frequent.
The Crystal Palace was a huge modular iron and glass building, originally built in Hyde Park for the 1851 Great Exhibition and then moved to Penge, where it served as an entertainment and exhibition venue. It burnt down in 1936, but not before giving its name to the park, the neighbourhood and the Premier League football club, one of the founding members of the Football Association, although the latter now play at Selhurst Park.
Georgia's ban on interracial marriage was introduced in 1750 i.e. before the Declaration of Independence and struck down by the Supreme Court in 1967 in Loving vs. Virginia.
The British for their part did not ban interracial marriage in Great Britain. They did so in India, along with in the pre-independence Americans and there was plenty of legally allowed discrimination, the so-called "colour bar" in Great Britain itself.
Your main issue would be societal backlash in any event - while Jules Verne has Phileas Fogg marry an Indian woman at the end of Around the World in Eighty Days, he makes it clear more than once that she looks like a white woman. So, yeah.

Thoughts on how they will explain a possible 3 episode Lucy absence?
The first thing that comes to mind that makes sense to me is Lucy's family.
We don't really know much about Lucy. Take it from her, her entire life is just work, gym, and Kate. She doesn’t really have anything else going on (I really thought her being a junior agent and wanting to follow in Tennant's footsteps was gonna be up there, but they seemed to randomly drop that after they futzed with the timeline to give us that Kacy backstory). The only thing we really know about her is that she has issues with her rich family and potentially burned that bridge when she left Texas. Given NCIS: Hawai`i's focus on ohana and the crumbs she was dropping last season (they were her third-most talked about thing behind work and Kacy angst lol), Lucy’s family troubles seem to be shaping up to be her other big long-term storyline.
Among the bits of bts we've gotten from 2x07 (presumably the last episode she would be in if she were to be absent for 3 episodes) was this interesting little sneak peak:
Tumblr media
(from a bts video a crewmember uploaded, these are tori and yas's stand-ins while the crew is setting up the shot)
Looks like the perfect set-up for them to get personal, like talking about Lucy’s fear of the water or quietly reflecting on her insecurities or her family/childhood (we already have a Whistler focused episode so this could be Lucy’s moment). Like something on the same level of seriousness as the scene where Lucy’s comforting and encouraging Kate outside of the FBI BBQ, but maybe with less anxiety and more chill vibes lol. It could be a great opportunity to finally introduce some substantial Lucy backstory and or a long-term background storyline that isn’t just about her and Kate.
I know a lot of people theorize that her family has cut her out completely or vice versa, but NCIS: Hawai'i already has one parent-child relationship that started out like that with Wally and Kai so maybe they want to differentiate a little (though they could use that similarity as an opportunity to get them to bond over it whenever that storyline happens, a more in-depth version of 1x04). I could see her not reaching out, but not having their numbers blocked either or still keeping minimal contact with them, birthdays and whatnot. Maybe something happened with a niece or nephew or her parents and she needs to go back and see them. It would warrant Tennant giving her extended personal time to take care of it. Plus, it would be easy to explain why she’s not in the episode at all if she’s back on the mainland and if they wanted to, they could include her without her needing to be on location/the sets via either phone or video calls and she could record all her scenes ahead of time. Though, the cons to this would be that if Lucy was absent from the episode, that means we wouldn’t get to see any of the angsty family scenes! (unless there were flashbacks shown later) and it could turn into a lot of tell not show type story writing which I hate. It would be a neat way to introduce angst though if Lucy is keeping it all in and not telling anybody about what happened even though its clearly affecting her (or if Kate feels hurt that Lucy didn't want her to go with her/isn't telling her either). It would be an interesting bump in the road in a season where she's been building trust and communication with Kate. My dream would be for it to progress slowly, more mentions of her past here and there, her family slowly becoming more present in her life (good or bad), maybe a brother or sister shows up in an episode down the line as a suspect or to visit and that throws her off, but I want the parents showing up to be an unexpected monumental thing that doesn't happen until like at least late s3 or s4.
Each of their cases takes places over the course of a few days minimum and that’s not even accounting for the amount of time that might take place in between them. Unless they threw in a few Nightwatch type cases (which they solved in one friday night and one entire saturday) then I don’t see how you explain away that big of an absence in-story unless you introduce a big storyline like Lucy needing to go back home for some reason.
Another possibility I’ve seen floating around is Lucy getting hurt in the upcoming episodes, which is very doable and I would not hate it at all. My only potential concern with that is I would want her to have scenes with the whole team and not just Kate while she's recovering. So maybe if she’s in the hospital, Tennant comes by to see her and tells her about the case or the boys throw her a little party in the hospital or they video call her because she’s bored out of her mind. Though, since Lucy’s in the crossover, I don’t know how keen Tennant would be bringing an agent who was recently seriously injured with her to LA on a mission like the one being described in the crossover (Noah is also listed as being in the crossover, but I don’t know if I’ve heard or seen anything at all about him filming out of state). IIRC, the synopsis mentions something about agents being targeted so Lucy being separated from everyone while in Texas could make her an easy target? Or if she hears about Tennant going to LA, it would make sense why she’s the one accompanying her because she’s already on the mainland and would probably be looking for an excuse to leave her family (or maybe she wants to leave Texas to protect them since she’s a target).
Hell, since we're speculating let's just throw shit at the wall. Maybe they do something wild like Lucy went on a long undercover thing or oh she's suspended because she fucked up.
Of course, they could still go with, “oh Tennant just shipped Lucy off to help another division since she's the only one who doesn't have family they need to take care of in Hawai’i or Lucy needed to help a friend or something it’s nbd,” and have her come back like nothing happened.
tldr; keeping up with the taras, she gets hurt, they just brush it off casually, or they throw something out of left field
(i am in the camp that if she were to be absent entirely, id lean more on it only being a one or two episode absence at most)

Karlskrona, Sweden (No. 4)
The island on which Karlskrona was built, Trossö, was owned during the 17th century by the farmer Vittus Andersson. Under Danish rule, there was another, older town called Lyckå on the mainland a couple of kilometers away. A little further away, the Danes had started to build Kristianopel before Blekinge fell under Swedish rule in 1658. Until 1679, the island and the nearby islets were owned by the farmer Vittus Andersson; he was now forced to sell his properties to the Swedish crown. That same year, plans were begun to base most of the kingdom's fleet on Trossö.
The city was founded on 10 August 1680 when the Royal Swedish Navy was relocated from the Stockholm area to Trossö, which had up until then been used chiefly for farming and grazing. At the time Sweden was the dominant military power in the Baltic Sea region, but needed a better strategic location against Denmark, since southern parts of Sweden had been conquered only a few decades before (see the Torstenson War). The Swedish fleet tended to get stuck in the ice during winter while located close to Stockholm and was therefore moved south. The island had a very strategic position with short sailing distances to the German and Baltic provinces. The city name means Karl's Crown in honour of King Karl XI of Sweden, the name being inspired by the name of the city Landskrona.
In 1682, bridges were built that connected the city center with the mainland. The first city plan, drawn up in 1683 by Erik Dahlbergh, Hans Wachtmeister and Carl Magnus Stuart, shows Karlskrona as a pure fortress. The 1694 plan by Erik Dahlberg, which was later followed, also provided space for urban development.
The city grew quickly and by 1750 Karlskrona had about 10,000 inhabitants. It was then one of the biggest cities in the country. Most of the baroque buildings from this era are still standing, which is why the city centre is architecturally uniform.
Karlskrona soon became the kingdom's third largest city, after Riga and Stockholm.

Matcha got an upgrade! 😍
This likely won't be his forever home since he'll get to around 10 inches one day, but he should be totally happy in here for a while!
[ID: Five pictures showing the process of Matcha the brown mainland chahoua gecko's new bioactive enclosure. The first picture just has soil and branches in the enclosure. Then the second has plants and a hanging cork tube. The third has the addition of decorations (rope bridge, feeding ledge, water ledge and hide) plus lighting. The fourth shows Matcha now in the enclosure, hanging off the edge of his hide. The fifth shows a close up of Matcha on his hide with his head resting on a branch.]

The story behind the song: Within Temptation’s Angels
Within Temptation’s breakthrough hit Angels was shaped by label trouble, departing members… and a high-profile political assassination
By the time Within Temptation released The Silent Force in 2004, they were shaping up as one of metal’s great new hopes. The Dutch band’s first two albums, 1997’s doomy, gothic-leaning Enter and 2000’s fantastical Mother Earth, had helped put symphonic metal on the map, but it was their third album that really grabbed people’s attention.
The Silent Force was a weightier, darker collection than its predecessors. Landing just a few months after Once, Nightwish’s genre-defining statement, that year saw the two bands stepping forward as the figureheads for a rising scene that was becoming a global commercial force.
The Silent Force’s first two singles, Stand My Ground and Memories, had been big hits across mainland Europe, but when the band saw how fervently the crowd at live shows reacted to Angels, they decided to release it as the album’s third single. Elegantly bridging the ornate gloom of the band’s early sound, the Celtic-infused sparkle of Mother Earth’s burgeoning symphonic drama, and the arena-filling bombast that would follow, the song would play a significant role in Within Temptation’s ascendancy. Today it stands as one of their most enduring anthems.
“Everyone has their own interpretation of the lyrics,” says vocalist Sharon den Adel of Angels. “It holds such a meaning for so many people in many ways. It’s a song that people love.”
The period leading up to The Silent Force was defined by turmoil and change. Following the departure of keyboardist Martijn Westerholt, who’d left in 2001, Within Temptation were getting to grips with a new line-up, which included guitarist Ruud Jolie and Martijn Spierenburg on keyboards. They had also moved labels, leaving the small Dutch independent DSFA Records and signing with German label GUN Records, with the hope that the latter could promote them across Europe on a grander scale.
That upheaval wasn’t confined to the band. The Netherlands itself had been in turmoil since the 2002 assassination of right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn, who’d been shot and killed by a political activist who disagreed with his anti-Muslim views. The incident had stunned the nation at the time, and its aftershocks were still being felt when Within Temptation entered the studio in summer 2004 to record the album.
“There was a lot of commotion in our country at that moment,” recalls Sharon. “We’ve always been very engaged with politics, although you don’t hear it much in our music. We did not agree with [Fortuyn], and we were worried about the future… that shines through on this album.”
The band shut themselves away from the world during the eight-week recording session, holing up in a studio on the industrial outskirts of Rotterdam. Every day they would arrive at 9am and not leave until 11pm. “Everything in the studio was closed; there was only a canteen with a little bit of light coming in,” remembers Sharon. “The fact we were in a very dark studio made us feel very gloomy.”
The album marked the first time the band had worked with producer Daniel Gibson, who has produced each of the band’s albums ever since. “He taught us not to sit inside all day,” laughs Sharon. “He’s like, ‘Guys, we have to go for lunch and see some daylight!’”
The success of Mother Earth meant that the band could do things differently this time around, pushing their symphonic inclinations to the forefront. Within Temptation had flirted with symphonic elements before: they’d used computerised orchestral sounds on both Mother Earth and Enter, and they’d worked with a small choir on the former, too. However, GUN Records were so impressed by the band’s growth that they splashed the cash, and forked out for a real Russian orchestra to play on the new material.
“The palette of colours we had to play with became bigger,” remembers Sharon. “We’ve always loved heavy music, but we also loved the soundtracks of epic movies like Braveheart and Gladiator. It had always been our intention to have this sound within our music – this was the first time we had the budget to do it!”
Of course, making a record in the mid-00s with an orchestra based on the other side of a continent was not without challenges. “We were close to Rotterdam, and they were in Moscow,” Sharon says. “Files were sent online but this was back in the day, and it took ages and the computer would crash. Then we said, ‘We want to change this’, and had to go back with a load of files again.”
Angels encapsulated their growing ambition perfectly. Starting with a fragile falsetto from Sharon, it built into an emotional, symphonic anthem, laced with bittersweet venom: ‘You took my heart, deceived me right from the start / You showed me dreams, I wished they would turn into real / You broke a promise, and made me realise, it was all just a lie.’
Fans have spent years dissecting its lyrics of betrayal, but Sharon reveals the band wrote the track to vent about frustrations with their original label, DSFA Records, that had been bubbling to the surface.
“Although we mostly work with metaphors in our music, there was a lot of things that were influenced by politics and our personal lives on that album,” she explains. “Angels is about heroes never coming with a cape and bad guys never coming with the striped shirt, like they’re supposed to be in prison. You have people that you trust and you finally find out they’re not that trustworthy.”
The band’s success, she says, had been a welcome surprise, but it had left them vulnerable. “We were never meant to be a professional band,” she explains. “The thing about that is then you don’t take contracts so seriously. You say, ‘OK, I’ll sign whatever as long as I can make an album!’ You never expect it to become a success, then things start to change and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’ I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. Even though we had lawyers and stuff involved, they were not specialised in music, so it was our own fault in a way.”
The video for Angels represented a new look for the band. Shot in a traditional Spanish mansion in Malaga, it was a visual step out from the shadows. “It was an excuse to do a warm video!” laughs Sharon. “Every time we made a video before, we were standing in the cold, in the rain! For Stand My Ground, we were on the top of a building in Berlin in the middle of the night. We were like, ‘Angels is going to be in the sunshine!’”
The video was also Sharon’s first time on a motorcycle, zipping down dusty roads clinging onto drummer Stephen van Haestregt for dear life. “He was always on motorbikes,” says Sharon. “He was used to it and was like, ‘I’m always in the back of the video clips and now I’m in front. I get to be a cool guy!’”
However, the darkness that had hung over the sessions for The Silent Force carried over into the concept for the video. Together with director Oliver Sommer, the band wrote the treatment for the shoot, which featured Sharon as a fallen angel, kidnapped by a demonic priest-cum-serial killer, played by an actor who had appeared as an extra in Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Western classic, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. With spirits rising from the grave and Sharon finally destroying her nemesis while sporting a pair of white angel wings, it’s a gothic-western fantasy that perfectly encapsulates the poignant beauty of the song.
Released in November 2004, The Silent Force immediately pushed Within Temptation to new heights, going gold only one week after its release in the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland. They had played their first UK show, a sold-out gig at London’s Scala, that September, but the real payoff would come a year after the album’s release, as the band headlined Bloodstock Festival for the first time (they would triumphantly return to headline again 10 years later).
“You could feel something was changing through interviews, and we were playing at later times at festivals,” Sharon remembers. Not that there was a handbook for their burgeoning success. “There was no one else to guide us outside of the Netherlands. We had to do things on our own and pioneer a bit. There weren’t many other bands we could ask, ‘How do you do that? What’s your experience?’ For us it was new.”
Still, the band who had begun as a casual hobby had become their homeland’s prime musical export. And The Silent Force, and Angels in particular, served notice of their impending popularity outside of the Netherlands, helping transform them into one of symphonic metal’s biggest success stories.
“With The Silent Force, people really knew who we were,” says Sharon. “We stepped up a level with everything. It was the moment we became who we are today.”
