Girl with Cat - Johs Rian (1932).
Johannes "Johs" Rian (1891 – 1981) was a Norwegian painter.
He was a son of farmers and also worked at the family farm, but left this career in 1927 to pursue painting.
He studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts from 1928 to 1930 under Axel Revold. He was also inspired by Henrik Sørensen, and Revold's teacher Henri Matisse.
In 1936 he married his secretary Ellen Gjønnæs (1903–1961). In 1950, Rian was provided with a Thomas Fearnley Memorial Scholarship and traveled to the south of France.

MWW Artwork of the Day (1/25/24) Thomas Fearnley (Norwegian, 1802-1842) Rider in a Landscape (1834) Oil on canvas, 53.5 x 74.5 cm. Private Collection
Unseen by the public for over a century, this charged landscape, of a lone rider coming face to face with the elements, is very much in the spirit of the northern Romantic tradition, pioneered by Caspar David Friedrich and Fearnley's compatriot Johan Christian Dahl. The present view, presumably of the foothills of the Alps, was likely inspired by the Bavarian lakes looking south, an area Fearnley had passed through in 1831 en route to Italy. Fearnley did not travel to the Italian lakes around Como and Lugano until 1835, on his way from Rome to Switzerland.
