Text
I drew Thomas Jane as Detective Miller from the Expanse intending to make it into a sticker but I don’t know. It’s just not working with text. Hm.
Tumblr media
I do like how it turned out though. I just love him. ❤️

satin and boots → draco malfoy
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION ⌙ in which draco attends a gala hosted by a fashionable y/n and her elegant best friend. draco learns they love a good boot. and a good treehouse.
PAIRING ⌙ draco x fem!reader
WORD COUNT ⌙ 2.4k
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
“that’s absolutely hideous. makes me want to wretch.” lukas groans.
“it’s not that bad..” you say, looking down at the magazine.
lukas scoffs, “y/n for someone who’s been to countless fashion shows, you have zero taste. that dress,” he says pointing to the teal chiffon garment in the magazine. “well that dress should be a crime. and not in a good way.”
you laugh a little and flip to a new page. adorning the page is beautiful spread of satin mauve gowns.
“this is the one!” you exclaim, pointing to a tighter fit version of the colored gowns.
“place an order for it! it’ll come in time for my parents gala! i’ll make sure to get a matching tie.” your friend gleams.
the two of you are gushing over what accessories to wear when you’re interrupted.
“look blaise, the hufflepuffs have moved on from planting and cooking to pursue something more meaningful... shopping.” draco smirks.
you roll your eyes at the boy. malfoy could be such an annoyance for no reason.
“draco i think you’d benefit from a day with us. those shoes are so ghastly.” lukas snorts.
you giggle and tell your friend to play nice.
“whatever, avery. you and your blood traitor parents wouldn’t know the first thing about luxury.” draco seethes.
your best friend, lukas avery, a part of the sacred twenty-eight pure-blood families. not like he or his parents care. that fact, annoys malfoy to no end.
“malfoy leave us alone, i don’t see why you constantly have to instigate with everyone.” you say.
blaise grins at you, “draco you’ve upset the poor girl. you know how sensitive the ‘puffs are.”
lukas gets up from his seat, pulling you with him. he glares at the two slytherin boys before leading the two of you to the hufflepuff common room.
“i cant believe my parents invited their families to the gala. i swear i’m going to kill zabini and malfoy if they ruin my night.” lukas complains.
“don’t worry, i doubt they’ll cause a scene there. they can’t afford to make their perfect families look bad.” you joke.
the day of the gala comes quickly. on one of the hottest days of the summer. you wouldn’t have cared if it weren’t for the fact that the avery’s had you and their son setting up the outside for the gala.
“mother, do we have to bring all the tables in the gardens? cant the servants do it?” lukas asks.
his mother, jane, gives him a sharp look.
he quickly gives up on his idea and the two of you walk to the gardens, tables and chairs in tow. the avery’s gardens are lovely, full of green grass and a pleathora of gorgeous flowers.
“this wouldn’t be a problem if we could use magic.” you say, placing a chair by a small metal table.
“you stop complaining! i carried way more than you.” lukas scoffs, fanning his flushed face.
“you’re such a dic-” you stop before you finish, spotting his father beside the two of you.
“hi thomas!” you greet the tall gentleman.
he eyes you before saying, “i hope you can improve your choice of words by tonight, y/n. i’d hate to have to send you to bed early just because you start using you colorful vocabulary.”
lukas snorts as you sulk.
“you two can start getting ready, take your time. when you’re done i expect you two greet guests with me and your mother.” thomas tells the two of you.
“us? greeting everyone? even the malfoy’s?” lukas grimaces.
“yes lukas, even the malfoy’s.” thomas chuckles.
getting ready definitely distracts the both of you from any thoughts of annoying pureblood families.
you help lukas into his grey suit. the suit jacket is asymmetrical and he wears a mauve silk turtleneck under it.
“black boots or snakeskin?” he questions.
“snakeskin. you have a statement to make.”
then he helps you slip into your mauve gown. it hugs your curves wonderfully. the dress is held up by two thin straps and drapes down your chest. it’s a simple gown, but the tightness and texture make it a a sight to behold.
lukas does your hair to your liking and helps you clasp your necklace.
“we look dashing.” he smiles at the both of you in the mirror.
“i must say, we clean up expertly. also, i better get my earrings back after tonight. you stole my last pair, and i won’t let you this time.” you say tugging slightly on the crystal earrings he’s wearing.
lukas waves you off and holds his arm out for you, leading you down the spiraling staircase.
“look at how beautiful they are, thomas.” jane smiles, winking at you.
you thank her and take your place beside the family, beginning to greet the guests.
most of them you know through school, and easily sparked up converstation.
besides pansy, she wasn’t too keen of talking to you.
after an hour you began to feel tired of sparking up the same converstation with people. you were beginning to wish could banter with malfoy just for a change in conversation.
almost on cue, the malfoy’s enter the room. lukas glances at you and playfully rolls his eyes, earning a subtle shove from his father.
“lovely gala you’ve put together, jane.” narcissa says before greeting the rest of you.
“i’ll have to agree with my wife. everything looks immaculate,” lucius says. “and your son is growing up quite nicely. he takes after you, thomas”
as the parents drift off into a conversation, draco clears his throat. you look at him and smile.
“i see you’ve gotten new shoes, malfoy. i must say, you can’t go astray with a good boot. good choice.” you say.
lukas snickers, “although an off white suit? thats questionable.”
draco glares at him before retiring hs attention to you, “you look nice. i almost didn’t recognize you.”
you scoff, “i look extactly like myself, draco. i’m just in a tight dress.”
he doesn’t say anything, but instead, looks you up and down and smirks. you don’t know why, but the gesture sends a shock down your spine.
soon the malfoy’s make their way to a dining table, and you continue to greet guests for a few more minutes.
“lukas, escort y/n to the dance floor for the first dance. and please, do not try any new dance moves you saw at the ballet. we don’t need a repeat of last winter.” jane tells her son.
“it wasn’t my fault.. y/n didn’t practice.” he mutters.
you and lukas make your way to the middle of the ballroom. his right hand envelopes your own and he allows his left to sit at your waist.
suddenly the music begins and you and your best friend float around the room elegantly.
you hear a few ooo’s and ahh’s. that eases the awkwardness you feel about being the opening dancers.
“malfoy has a crush.” lukas whispers.
“how riveting.” you huff, focusing on the steps.
“oh, not just any crush. it’s you, love.” he says, dipping you down and winking.
“are you sure he’s not smitten with pansy.” you say, quirking your eyebrow up.
lukas raises you back up and spins you, “that’s a stupid question, no one likes pansy.”
“that’s rude.” you chastise.
“well she doesn’t know i said it. i think you should ask him to dance.” lukas grins.
the music stops. the guests clap respectively.
“i thought we hated malfoy?” you say.
“we don’t hate anyone. just ask him.” lukas tells you.
before you can protest, lukas leaves you going to dance with leo greene.
there was no way you’d ask malfoy to dance. so instead, you go to sit at your table. there’s an array of foods and cocktails to indulge, and indulge you do.
a boring hour passes and you decide to escort yourself to the gardens. by now, the stars are out and the guests are all inside. you’re all alone. as you walk through the hydrangeas you faintly hear your favorite song being played on the piano. you smile to yourself and gently sway to the beat.
“cant find a dancing partner, y/l/n?” draco asks, poking his head out in front of you.
you shriek and cover your mouth.
“don’t scare people, malfoy!” you say, slapping his wrist.
“oh please, i didn’t mean to,” he pauses and looks up and down at you again. “want to dance, y/l/n?”
you give him a questioning look but take his hand anyway.
“please refrain from stepping on my feet.” he teases.
“if i step on your feet it’s deserved.” you reply.
he rolls his eyes, and begins dancing with you.
“lukas is under the impression that you, draco dear, are harboring a crush on me.” you tell him.
“a crush? i’ll say i find you beautiful, but i don’t have a crush on you. you’re a half-blood hufflepuff.” he snorts.
you knew it. there was no way malfoy could have a crush on you.
“that’s what i said.” you say plainly, allowing him to continue guiding you through the gardens in a simple dance.
“what’s that over there?” malfoy asks nodding his head in the direction of a tree.
you look over and see he’s talking about the treehouse lukas and you built your first year. you smile and look back to him, "would you like to see?"
"i guess.." he says, letting you go.
you lead him to the tree house and tell him to climb up, you follow suit.
inside sit a conglomeration of things lukas and you have collected over the years. there’s a badger plush toy, bean bags, a muggle radio with stickers covering it, a love letter a muggle boy wrote you fourth year, an empty bottle of whiskey, and a hufflepuff flag.
draco looks the place over and picks up the letter.
“what is this?” he asks, shit-eating grin covering his pale face.
“that is none of your business!” you say, grabbing the letter.
“no no, hand it back. i want to see.” he says.
you glare at him, “you’ll just make fun of me.”
“i swear i won’t make fun of you, now give it here.” he says, snatching it up.
he scoffs before looking back down to the letter.
he begins to read aloud, “my dearest y/n, i get very sad when you leave for school. i wish i could go with you. i miss seeing your pretty face all the time. the boys back home miss you too. when you get back i think we should all watch the rest of the star wars movies. josh’s dad got them all for christmas! i miss you so much. i think i like you a little too much now. the other day while i was in the shower i started thinking about your pretty eyes. and now, i’m certain they’re my favorite thing about you. i hope school is going well! i was sorry to hear about that guy that was making fun of you.. drago? don’t let him get to you. he probably doesn’t know how to talk to a pretty girl like you. some guys are insecure like that. oh and can you send those weird chocolates again? last thing, i remembered you liked my jumper i had on the last you saw me, so i sent it to you. i hope you’ll wear it! i cant wait to see you.” he finishes and looks over to you.
“drago? i assume that’s me.” he says.
“yes, draco.” you reply
“i wasn’t that mean to you fourth year.” he insists.
“oh, you were beyond mean. you were a complete git, malfoy.”
he laughs and places the note back in its place. turning to look at he the bean bags.
“what are those?” he quizzes.
“you sit in them, they’re called bean bags.” you relate.
he glances around the room once more before sighing.
“what now, malfoy?” you ask.
“i lied.” he declares.
you furrow your brows, “about what?”
“when i said i didn’t have a crush on you. i do. i like you. you’re... nice.” he admits.
“i’m nice?”
“well amongst other things, but i didn’t want to fuel your ego. salazar knows you have enough of that from hanging around avery.” he replies.
“i would like to say i as well have a crush on you, but i feel like this is some sort of prank you’re pulling on me with blaise and pansy.” you quip.
“it’s not a prank. i wouldn’t go this far for a prank. y/l/n, i’m in some stupid treehut you made back in first year just because i like you. i made sure zabini and parkinson didn’t annoy you or your bloody friend tonight. and i danced with you in a garden of flowers. i don’t know how much more obvious i can be.” he nags.
you raise your brows, “okay okay, i believe you. i like you too draco. you’re... unique.”
he rolls his eyes at your joke.
“seriously. you’re a sight to behold. you’re beautiful, charming when you want to be, intelligent, and you know what you want.” you smile.
he returns the gesture and relaxes.
“but you have to stop being a dick or else i won’t entertain you.” you say, firmly.
“i can do that.” he remarks.
you laugh and pull him toward you. his eyes scan your face before leaning in.
“no way. seriously no way.” you hear lukas guffaw.
you look behind you and see your friend and leo, eyes shooting out of their sockets.
“oh fuck off lukas.” you giggle, throwing the badger at him.
“i’ll leave, i just-,” he blinks rapidly while pointing at you and draco, “that was just unexpected.”
you roll your eyes and wait for him to be far away from the treehouse before you lean back into draco and kiss him.
it’s a delicate kiss, full of innocence. it makes you feel utterly weightless.
“i have to get back to my parents. i’ll write to you though. i hear the avery’s are throwing another party before school. i’d like to have you as my date.”
“your date? but what about your parents. they wouldn’t like that one bit.” you ask.
“i couldn’t care less. at least you’re not a bloody muggle.” he teases, earning a slap on the wrist from you.
“i really like you draco malfoy. don’t mess this up.” you say, watching him ascend down the ladder.
he looks up at you and smiles, “never.”

6 and 25 for the Bookworm Asks? :)
Hey there! Thanks for the questions!
6) What stereotypical “bookish” things do you like or own?
Oh boy. Besides, you know, all the books … where do I even start? When I was young my family and friends realized that literary/bookish gifts were always a safe choice for me—a fact that has never changed—so between gifts and the purchases I make for myself, I’ve acquired quite the collection.
In high school I discovered Out of Print as a freshman (around 2010ish), and immediately bought the Nineteen Eighty-Four Sweatshirt they were selling at the time. It was mint green and borrowed its design from the cover of the first edition. I actually think I might have taken my first-ever Instagram selfie in that sweatshirt. (Out of Print doesn’t have it anymore, but they do sell this one now, and it looks just as comfy!) Shortly afterward I bought a Catch-22 t-shirt from them (I think it was this one) and I got these banned books socks either that year or the following year for Christmas. I also got this banned books pouch, which is perfect for holding various charging cords, and this Edgar Allen Poe pop art shirt. My shirt must have been an earlier version of the same shirt, because it was this grayish brown color instead of the current blue color. People kept asking me if the person on my shirt was John Wilkes Booth. The audacity. (Also, excuse me!? I would never!)
In high school I also got this Edgar Allen Poe candle (which smells absolutely amazing), was given this Edgar Allen Poe lunchbox from Powell’s Books as a gift, purchased this scarf featuring the end of A Tale of Two Cities, and got this Thomas Jefferson’s library mug on a trip to Washington DC at the Library of Congress.
Right before heading off to college I got this t-shirt to rep one of my all-time favorite local institutions, the aforementioned Powell’s Books, as well as this literature-themed Nalgene water bottle. (They also come in sci-fi, philosophy, mathematics, and women authors—oh my god, that last one is definitely new and I NEED IT).
Since high school I’ve acquired two more pairs of Out of Print socks.
In college, friends gave me these Shakespeare and Jane Austen bandaids and this banned books mug.
In college I also started to obtain literary wall art and posters. I have some framed book illustrations from an antique collection of Shakespeare’s plays, a Kenyon Review poster (it’s, uh, obviously not blurry in person—I just couldn’t find a better picture), and a vintage poster from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Since graduating from college, I’ve obtained tote bags from AWP 2018, the Poetry Foundation, The New Yorker, (couldn’t find pictures/links for all of them) and a grocery bag from Powell’s Books. I also got a vintage Oregon Shakespeare Festival t-shirt as well as this t-shirt from their most recent season.
Since I’ve been in New York I’ve gotten yet more tote bags from Words Without Borders, the Feminist Press, Drawn and Quarterly, and the Strand. I also bought this sticker, this keychain, and this t-shirt from the Strand.
I know this is probably leaving quite a bit out,* and I’m sorry if by any chance you see this post and notice that I’ve left something that you’ve given me out—this is just off the top of my head!
Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, I’m eyeing these socks for the upcoming holidays; this McNally Jackson tote bag; and this Community Bookstore tote bag. I already have too many tote bags. Oh, and the Powell’s Nalgene women authors water bottle that I discovered in the process of answering this question.
*This list, it should be noted, doesn’t include any of the comics-related stuff that I own. So … yes, there’s more, haha. I’d be happy to write about that as well if anyone would like—just send me a message!
25) What books do you read over and over?
Paradise Lost ● John Milton
White Teeth ● Zadie Smith
Pride and Prejudice ● Jane Austen
Persuasion ● Jane Austen
Against Memoir ● Michelle Tea
Wuthering Heights ● Charlotte Brontë
Sabrina ● Nick Drnaso
A Christmas Carol ● Charles Dickens
Citizen: An American Lyric ● Claudia Rankine
The Sherlock Holmes canon ● Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, Pericles, the Henriad ● Shakespeare
Bad Feminist ● Roxane Gay
And, of course, I know there are some I’m definitely forgetting!
Interestingly, there are plenty of books that I love just as much as these ones that I haven’t read more than once. I guess it’s because I rarely re-read books. There are so many good books out there, and I want to read as many of them as I can rather than reading the same ones again—at least, most of the time. When I do read books more than once, it’s usually because 1) I really, really loved the book, 2) I’m craving a story that’s really comforting, 3) I know I’ll get more out of the book if I read it more than once, or 4) the book is the only reading option (or one of the only reading options) I have at the time.
Thank you so much for sending in these questions, and I’m sorry it took so long to get around to them! Hopefully my responses were interesting. :) I promise to provide swifter responses in the future!
In solidarity,
Your local FP intern

Do you have a book with a clock on the cover? Almost Midnight by Rainbow Rowell
Do you have a poetry book? William Shakespeare’s Complete Works do count, don’t they? His Sonnets are included.
Do you have a book with an award stamp on it? Yes, and I hate those. I hate non-removable stickers/stamps on books. It ruins the cover. Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Abertalli, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
Do you have a book written by an author with the same initials as you? Caraval by Stephanie Garber, The Smoke Thieves by Sally Green
Do you have a book of short stories? Because you love to hate me edited by Amerii, All Out - The no-longer secret stories of queer teens throughout the ages edited by Saundra Mitchell
Do you have a book that is between 500-510 pages long? The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell (500p.) and Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab (510p.)
Do you have a book that was turned into a movie? So many! The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer, The Host by Stephenie Meyer, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Abertalli, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, LotR,The Hobbit... I’m sure there’s more.
Do you have a graphic novel? Uuh, I still haven’t fully gotten the difference between ‘Graphic Novels’ and ‘Comic books’. I own a shit-ton of the latter (Mostly but not exclusively Manga). I guess Twilight part 1+2 and New Moon part 1 adapted by Young Kim is a safe bet? As for a comic book example, The Complete Elfquest Vol. 1-5 by Richard and Wendy Pini.
Do you have a book written by 2 or more authors? What if it’s us by Becky Abertalli and Adam Silvera

How the Smithsonian and Other Museums Are Responding to the U.S. Capitol Riot
Tumblr media
Last Wednesday, a mob of far-right insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol, forcing lawmakers to flee for safety and temporarily delaying Congress’ certification of November’s election, which will put Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris in the White House.
Over six hours of chaos, the insurrectionists assaulted law enforcement officers, ransacked offices, stole objects, smashed windows and smeared what appeared to be blood across a bust of President Zachary Taylor. Rioters also erected a wooden gallows near the Capitol Reflecting Pool; footage captured at the scene showed some members of the crowd chanting, “Hang Mike Pence!” In total, the attack claimed the lives of five people, including a police officer reportedly struck with a fire extinguisher.
In the wake of the January 6 riot, museums and cultural institutions across the country have responded by condemning the violence, collecting artifacts linked to the attack and beginning to place the events in a historical context.
As Anthea M. Hartig, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH), said in a Friday statement, “This election season has offered remarkable instances of the pain and possibility involved in [the] process of reckoning with the past and shaping the future. As curators … continue to document the election of 2020, in the midst of a deadly pandemic, they will include objects and stories that help future generations remember and contextualize Jan. 6 and its aftermath.”
Smithsonian curators have already collected dozens of artifacts linked to the attack, reports Zachary Small for the New York Times. These objects include a sign that reads “Off with their heads—stop the steal” and a small handwritten poster that includes the phrase “Trump won, swamp stole.”
Per the Washington Post’s Maura Judkis and Ellen McCarthy, government officials plan on preserving items found inside the Capitol—including stickers, flags and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s damaged name plate—and sharing them with museums, including the Smithsonian.
Members of the public are encouraged to send photos and descriptions of any materials that should be considered for future acquisition to [email protected].

This linen banner celebrated Thomas Jefferson’s victory over John Adams in the election of 1800—and the peaceful transition of power that followed. “Two hundred and twenty years after Jefferson was sworn in as president, the vulnerability of this legal and historic handover was revealed,” said Hartig.
(National Museum of American History)
According to Hartig, NMAH is committed to documenting “all aspects of the American political experiment: a government by the people.”
The director added, “A key tenet of this constitutional democracy is the peaceful transfer of power following U.S. presidential elections, dating back to the republic’s first presidential election. This week, that core belief was shaken.”
Referencing one of the museum’s treasured political history items—a banner celebrating the outcome of the election of 1800—Hartig noted that John Adams, who lost the presidency to Thomas Jefferson, peacefully conceded despite the “bitterly contested” nature of the race.
“At the time and since, the rhythmic certainty of this proud tradition has sparked amazement that any leader would willingly yield their office,” Hartig said. “Two hundred and twenty years after Jefferson was sworn in as president, the vulnerability of this legal and historic handover was revealed.”
In a separate statement, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III noted that he was “appalled by the violence incited by those unwilling to accept the results of a now congressionally certified presidential election and outraged by the diminution of the rule of law and the dishonoring of a symbol of American democracy.”
Wednesday’s deadly attack has shaken our country. Dedicated to sharing knowledge for the benefit of humanity, we at the Smithsonian are more determined than ever to provide educational resources to bring our nation together. https://t.co/ctdSANgt40
— Lonnie G. Bunch III (@SmithsonianSec) January 11, 2021
Bunch added, “As members of an unruly mob brandished the Confederate flag in the halls of Congress, it was a reminder that this was not simply an attack on our democratic institutions, but a repudiation of our shared values. … This moment is a clarion call. We must commit to working across the lines that divide us to make real the nation so many have long dreamed for, a truly beloved community.”
The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee; the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City; and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. made similar statements condemning the attack, reports Hakim Bishara for Hyperallergic. The Brooklyn Museum, meanwhile, posted an image of Ed Ruscha’s Our Flag on Instagram alongside a caption stating that “the feelings of fragility and uncertainty evoked in Ruscha’s work were sadly reinforced by yesterday’s [events].” The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Alliance of Museums and a number of national museum associations also released statements regarding the riot.
At the Capitol, curators assessed the damage to their historic workplace, which functions both as the seat of federal government and a museum. Though benches, murals, shutters and other items sustained damage at the hands of rioters or through the accretion of tear gas and pepper spray, Capitol officials tell the New York Times’ Sarah Bahr that the destruction could have been worse: A number of large-scale John Trumbull paintings in the Capitol Rotunda, for instance, escaped relatively unscathed. None of the artifacts on loan from the Smithsonian to the Capitol were damaged in the attack.
Jane Campbell, president of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, tells the Post that Wednesday’s events left her angry and heartbroken. But, she adds, “as a historian I want everything preserved,” including items broken or damaged by the mob.
“I think the people who did the attack on the Capitol are insurrectionist, immoral and bad news all the way around,” Campbell continues, “… but if they left stuff behind, it should be preserved and studied later. We have to look at, ‘What did we learn?’”
Prior to last week, curators and educators across the country had already been working to ensure that key artifacts from 2020—including objects associated with an unprecedented global pandemic, a worldwide push for racial justice and a divisive presidential election—would be preserved for generations to come.
Last summer, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), NMAH and the Anacostia Community Museum began collecting artwork, signs and other memorabilia from Black Lives Matter protests that swept the nation following police officers’ killing of George Floyd. As Elliot C. Williams reported for DCist in June 2020, curators collected a number of protest signs that had been posted on a fence around Lafayette Square.
Aaron Bryant, a curator at NMAAHC, said in a statement at the time that he had interviewed and listened to the stories of Black Lives Matter protesters.
“Objects are just metaphors for individual humanities,” he noted. “And behind each humanity is a story and a voice we want to preserve and share.”

Puns masterpost
-Mine- I like Cheddar, but I'm neutral on Swiss. I was up reading atheist literature at an ungodly hour. I don't want to go to the agricultural supply store in the seedy part of town. I was reading a book on anti-gravity and couldn't put it down. A man was arrested for theft when he was caught rifling through a pile of guns with grooved barrels. It's hard to save money on postage stamps, because you have to pay sticker price. Fixing flats is tiring. The high pH of lye is basically what drain cleaner is. Marriage is the decision of a wife time. A violent wine snob is a terroirist. I wanted to write a book about bad excuses, but I figured no one would buy it. A man used a handgun to extort money from people going to the bathroom - it was a piss toll. A sergeant being demoted is corporal punishment. Fashionistas are clothes-minded. Mysterious ticking noises are da bomb. Terrorism is da bomb. Avoiding panhandlers is hobophobic. Gifts that come out of nowhere are from the aether bunny. Tom joined the Army and ended up working on the powerplants of large armored vehicles. He's Thomas the tank engine man. An anticapitalist Japanese spirit is a commie kami. A gay person living on the streets is hobosexual. Gay friends are homiesexuals. Don't smoke weed in a dwelling with transparent walls - people who live in glass houses shouldn't get stoned. People objecting to a particular war are caught between Iraq and a hard place. The military can cost an arm and a leg. A banana bought with British welfare money is Dole on the dole. The staff at a Chinese restaurant are cowokers. This movie is rated Arr for violence at sea.
-Inspired By- Communism is a sickle answer to a complex problem. [Pig With The Face Of A Boy, Complete History Of The Soviet Union, Arranged To The Melody Of Tetris] Using ape disguises for a hit and run raid is gorilla warfare. [K.A. Applegate, Animorphs] Someone crashed into a tree, but he was oaky. [Lynyrd Skynyrd, That Smell]
-From others- I relish these food jokes... Every time you make a typo, the errorists win. It's hard to be cheesy when everyone around you is laughtose intolerant. I bought some shoes from a drug dealer. I don't know what he laced them with, but I've been tripping all day. Dangerous mining work induces digger mortis. RIP, pot of boiling water - you will be mist. Tectonic plates are perfect for serving a continental breakfast. Thinking otherwise seems faulty. Atheism is not-for-prophet. Dropping a handgun into avocado dip makes glockamole. A cigar shaped like a dinosaur is a bluntosaurus. Leather armor is good for sneaking around because it's made of hide. Obama and Biden going out to dinner is a government mandate. A flooded convent is nunderwater. If you stand in pouring grain, you're going to get wheat. I broke up with my gym. We were just not working out. If I give a penny for your thoughts, and you put your two cents in, I make interest on my interest. The Illuminatea want to bring about a brew world order. 'beefstew' is not a stroganoff password. People with pictures in lockets are independant. If a Norwegian robot analyzes a bird, it Scandinavian. Last night on Dancing With The Tsars, Peter and Catherine were great, but Ivan was terrible. My friend really changed since she became a vegetarian. It's like I've never seen herbivore. A pregnancy scare is a near life experience. There's a special place in the heart for deoxygenated blood. Someone staying in the closet is keeping a straight face. A frog's car broke down and it got toad away. If you pour root beer into a square cup, you'll get beer. If you know what you're doing in 5 years, you have 2020 vision. Gathering animals and inflating the count is rounding up. Tears are glumdrops. A good hot liquid meal is souper. People sometimes get divorced because of a stalemate. Lab accidents are sometimes caused by tripping on acid. A guacamole is equal to 6.0221415×10^23 guacas - that's Avocado's number. Spilling spices means you have too much thyme on your hands. Being welcomed by spices is season's greetings. Being unable to get manure means you can't buy shit. Indiana Jones is fedora the explorer. Minions are a despicable meme. Ingredients should be called recipieces. Why was the accountant a pessimist? Because he knew it was an accrual world. Some aquatic mammals escaped the zoo. It was otter chaos. I contemplated my navel and invented fuzzy logic. I bought a lot of tubers at a discount supermarket - what am I going to do with Aldi's potatoes? LEGO Nexo Knights includes the characters Clay Moorington, Macy, Axl and Lavaria, wizard's assistant A. Prentiss, and some names that are even more obvious. If a Tesla gets stolen, it becomes an Edison. For awhile, Houdini used trap doors in every act - it was a stage he was going through. Jokes about communism aren't funny [unless you share them, because they're classless, in practice] Have a souper birthday - you're one in a bouillon! Vietnam vets are not fonda Jane. Crime dramas are arresting television. Wearing cowboy clothes is ranch dressing. Removing an angel from a fountain creates a sans seraph font. Seven ate nine because you're supposed to have three squared meals a day. Scientists have almost completed building a sex robot but they’re still working out its kinks. Balance between friends and women is homie-hoe-stasis. The tenth Fast and Furious movie should be called Fast 10: Your Seatbelts. Fed Sex, for when you absolutely need it overnight. [I still remember that novelty T-shirt I saw in high school]
-Songs- Weird Al's Party at the Leper Colony is so full of puns they're falling off. The Kip Addotta song Wet Dream is a wave of fishy puns.
"I had a ball when I conquered France and Belgium, though it took a lot of Gaul." "You say the peasants are revolting? Well hey I knew that." - MC Lars, It's A Latin Thing [the song concept is a pun on Latin meaning Hispanic or the Roman language]
-Collaboration- Never apollogize for your bad puns about greek gods. - http://raganiazumi.tumblr.com/post/113977297966/ Even if people get in your hera about it. - me
Why are glue sticks not called stick sticks? - http://warriorsdebt.tumblr.com/post/120794813885/why-are-glue-sticks-not-called-stick-sticks Carol: Hard to say. Me: That's rather dry humor.
If Trump becomes president, there will be hell toupee. (Carol: I'll wig out.)
(seen online) I wish Medusa would stop objectifying people. (Carol: I don't take that for granite.)
-Sexual- A woman tried to get a divorce because of her husband's impotence, but that didn't stand up in court. A man was caught masturbating and called it a stroke of bad luck. People who obsess about sex are thinking inside the box. A gay king is a royal pain in the ass. A man had a fight with his erection and beat it single-handedly. Someone new to giving blowjobs is in over someone else's head. Being happy about anal sex is celebrating a weak end.
-Sexual from others- Election and erection both mean a dick rising to power. I'm pro-bush, but not the George W kind. Over the past year, my sexual fetishes have been slowly getting more perverse, but it wasn't until I spanked a statue that I realized I'd hit rock bottom. A Wednesday when it's not raining is dry hump day.

Turning indie horror hit 'Neverending Nightmares' into a manga
She stands in front of you, clutching a teddy bear to her chest. She can't be older than 8, with long, straight black hair and a frilled dress. You don't know her name, but she's smiling warmly. And then, suddenly, she isn't: Her doe eyes widen, white and afraid. Her mouth gapes and blood drips past her lips. You follow her gaze down -- a knife protrudes from her stomach, staining her dress bright red, blood dribbling into her socks and Mary Janes. A knife that your hands are grasping tightly.
This is how the video game Neverending Nightmares begins, and it's also the first scene in a manga of the same name that debuted last week. As a game, Neverending Nightmares is a chilling, powerful peek into the darkest thoughts of a person struggling with depression and intrusive thoughts. The protagonist, Thomas, is trapped in a hellscape loop, repeatedly waking up only to realize he's still in a terrible nightmare: Headless corpses are piled against black-and-white walls; bodies hang from meat hooks in a claustrophobic cell; Thomas pulls a vein from his wrist like a stray thread.
So far, the manga is just as brazen in its depiction of suffering and death. It's done in the same Edward Gorey-esque art style, filled with scratchy black lines and explosions of red highlighting gruesome scenes of disembowelment, murder and torture. For creator Matt Gilgenbach, these scenes are the heart of Neverending Nightmares, though they're not gory for the sake of gore. They serve a profound purpose as he attempts to demonstrate the depth of his own depressive thoughts.
Neverending Nightmares spawned from a dark period in Gilgenbach's life, as described to Joystiq (now Engadget) in 2014: His game, Retrograde, had just bombed and he was financially downtrodden. He slipped into depression, something he'd faced earlier in his life. His mind began to fill with images of self-inflicted violence and he longed for an outlet to express the overwhelming nature of these thoughts.
"When I started thinking about how to represent my obsessive compulsive disorder, one of the main things I struggled with are intrusive thoughts, violent thoughts of self-harm," Gilgenbach says. "These were very upsetting, and as soon as I became comfortable with a particular image, my mind would dream up an even more intense and awful image that would make me miserable. I thought that Neverending Nightmares would be a great opportunity to bring those to life."
Gilgenbach was onto something there. Neverending Nightmares premiered on PC in 2014 and it's still relevant today, picking up new players and expanding to fresh platforms. Alongside the launch of the manga last week, Neverending Nightmares landed on Android and iOS with a sticker price of $4. The game is now available on Steam, PlayStation 4, Vita and mobile devices.
The prologue of Neverending Nightmares
Pixiv
The prologue and first chapter of the manga are available now, for free, on Japanese artist forum Pixiv. The remaining eight chapters -- each readable in English, Japanese and simplified Chinese -- will roll out once a month through July, also for free.
Pixiv played a big role in making the manga happen. Gilgenbach hadn't seriously considered transforming his game into a comic book or any other medium, but once Neverending Nightmares hit PlayStation Network in Japan, it picked up a lot of interest on Pixiv. The company reached out to Gilgenbach with an offer to license his IP and create a manga.
"One of the most exciting things about the manga is that I can reach a different audience that might not be interested in the game," Gilgenbach says. "When I met with Pixiv early on, I stressed to them how important of an IP to me this was and how I wanted to ensure it stayed true to the theme of the original work. They were very receptive to this and worked with me on keeping the same theme as the game."
Developing the manga is a collaborative process: Gilgenbach doesn't have any experience in writing Japanese comic books himself, so he and Pixiv worked with a specialist on the script. The story itself, however, resides in Pixiv's hands.
"I feel that they have made the manga a bit faster paced, and added more gore and horror to the beginning of the work," Gilgenbach says. "It definitely changes the feeling, but I think it really works well for the medium. I get chills reading the manga, so I think they pulled off the horror effectively."
youtube
Gilgenbach is surprised to still be working on Neverending Nightmares after all these years. Its longevity is notable in the crowded independent marketplace to begin with, but it's especially impressive considering the game's dark subject matter and heaps of gore.
"I didn't expect it to continue to have interest at this point," Gilgenbach says. "I think because I set out to do something different and recreate my personal journey with mental illness thematically, it really resonates with a fanbase that is continuing to grow through word of mouth."
And, now, word of manga.

We Love How Stupid The Venom Movie Is
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three decades ago Marvel Comics debuted one of its most popular anti-heroes, Spider-Man arch-enemy Venom. Now Eddie Brock and his slavering black and white symbiote pal have gotten a solo, Spider-Man free shot at the big screen. Did that turn out to be as bad an idea as it sounds? Chris Person, Ethan Gach and I discuss.
Tumblr media
Chris Person: Yes, but also no.
Ethan Gach: Precisely.
Chris: I don’t know about you, but I had a real good time with that not-so-good movie. It knew exactly what it was.
Fahey: I came out of the theater thinking the exact same thing: what a great bad movie.
Chris: It feels exactly what a Venom movie should be: dumb, confusing, extremely juvenile. It feels like a movie dropped out of the 90s, back before we started acting like superhero movies should be competent or adult. A friend said “that movie wields its dumbness like a weapon.”
Fahey: Oh god, that’s beautiful.
Ethan: If ever there was a movie that earned its absurd Tom Hardy voice.
Fahey: For one thing, we’ve finally found the perfect person to cast against Tom Hardy, and that’s Tom Hardy doing a funny voice. Tom Hardy Talks To Himself For Two Hours would be a great movie.
Chris: I assumed it was a different guy, they did a lot of good stuff with the Venom voice in post-production.
Ethan: Oh wow, same. I’ve never heard a voice that altered be that funny before. Venom had some of the funniest lines by far, just in timing and inflection alone.
Fahey: Oh, Hardy went all out on that voice. His influences, from a Screen Rant interview: “ Redman, Busta Rhymes, and James Brown as ingredients and then I played with it to create the fusion of sort of what you hear, which sounds nothing like that, but initially was like vibe or heartbeat that I wanted to bring to it.”
Tumblr media
Advertisement
Chris: OK now I just want a Busta Rhymes Venom movie.
Fahey: You can really hear it when Venom calls Brock “Pussy.”
Chris: They really got the most out of that PG-13.
Ethan: Action-wise, I found most of it underwhelming, but the smoke-filled fight against the SWAT team toward the end actually worked surprisingly well.
Tumblr media
Chris: It felt like they didn’t know how well this movie was going to do and were kind of conservative with it?
Fahey: They used a trick to pull off the PG-13. They made the first half hour, 45 minutes super boring so the film ratings board folks fell asleep.
Ethan: And yet it never seemed to waste time. In the very beginning I thought it would do the long drawn out thing of “oh, this weird goo, is it evil?” but then it immediately leaves Jameson’s body and begins messing shit up.
Fahey: RIP JJ Jameson’s son.
Chris: I have seen some debate as to how long that movie was.
Ethan: it definitely did not feel like the billed run time.
Chris: It felt like an hour and a half tops. Also, I should say for clarity that while I respect Tom Hardy committing 100% to a tacky movie, his performance almost exists in its own space. I’ve described it as Bobcat Goldthwait if he never did the high registers or Charlie from It’s Always Sunny if he somehow had an MSNBC gig.
Fahey: Yeah, it’s a weird time dilation sort of thing. I recall feeling the opening drag, but once Brock and Venom got together it was so much stupid fun it just flew by.
Ethan: I first got excited for this movie w hen I watched the original trailer that everyone thought was terrible. It reminded me of 2004’s Punisher. While it doesn’t have nearly the arc or deep bench of characters that movie had, it just felt so damn refreshing to see a comic book movie where it doesn’t seem like the writers, directors, or studio have a to-do list of boxes they need to check.
Fahey: Is that Dolph Lundgren or Thomas Jane?
Ethan: Jane.
Fahey: Ah yes, where instead of killing his wife and kids the mob killed everyone he ever loved, all at once. Good stuff.
Ethan: Also, what timing on the UN’s global warming report. I was perfectly primed to accept Venom’s core premise and not really get caught up in the nonsense particulars.
Chris: We should probably speak to the plot. Here’s what you gotta know: Not Elon Musk gets some symbiotes and Eddie Brock tries to stop him after getting Venom’d. And Riz Ahmed does a good job with some very bad dialogue.
Fahey: Wow, you remembered an actor other than Tom Hardy and Dawson’s ex (Michelle Williams)!
Tumblr media
Chris: Jenny Slate is in there too, weirdly!
Fahey: It’s hard to be a scenery-chewing villain no one cares about. And yes, Jenny from Parks and Rec, doing not a single funny thing.
Ethan: I also really appreciated Mr. Robot’s Ron Cephas Jones doing the bit role of Brock’s Network boss. And the inconspicuous white dude from Veep who is very good at doing that one thing.
Fahey: You guys have IMDB open now.
Ethan: It was also neat to see a movie shot in San Francisco, rather than shot in front of a blue screen and made to look like New York. I almost turned on a Full House rerun afterwards
Advertisement
Fahey: Though main filming was in Atlanta and NYC, painted to look like San Francisco.
Chris: Georgia: we will literally never tax a film crew ever.
Tumblr media
Advertisement
Fahey: Have a peach sticker.
Ethan: Mike, is this the Venom you wanted? I never knew the character beyond the Fox Spider-Man cartoon.
Fahey: Man, it’s tough to say, as the Venom I wanted was generally defined by Spider-Man. There are shades of the Venom: Lethal Protector comic series in here — that’s the one where Venom moves from NYC to San Francisco and becomes an anti-hero — which I dig. My favorite Venom so far has been from the Venom: Space Knight series, in which the Flash Thompson version of the character comes into his own.

Tumblr media
Venom: Space Knight
Fahey: I can’t help but feel Eddie Brock’s journey was seriously cut short here. That said, I still had a hell of a time.
Chris: I had a blast. The dialogue is very Good-Bad in a lot of ways, and there’s one line from Michelle Williams near the end that had me and the person I saw it with dying. The parts that suck are fun, and the parts that are fun are solidly slapstick. But I probably won’t see it again unless I’m on a plane.
Fahey: I will purchase it on 4K Blu-Ray if it comes with a director’s commentary. If I ever find myself in a hospital for four months again, forced to flip through basic cable channels, I’d stop and watch.
Ethan: The beginning montage of Brock’s Vice News-like reporting killed me, as did Brock later saying something to the effect of “Oh no my legs!” after wiping out on a motorcycle during a chase scene. This is definitely the type of movie I will try to convince everyone I see to watch so I can watch them watch it and then probably be very disappointed when they don’t laugh as hard as me.
Fahey: I will never eat tater tots again.
Chris: Same, but with uncooked lobsters.
Tumblr media
No lobsters were harmed during the uploading of this photo.
Fahey: Or Woody Harrelson in a red fright wig.
Ethan: I would gladly watch a sequel that was just Hardy and Harrelson sitting in adjoining cells doing Waiting for Godot: Symbiote Edition.
Fahey: We can only hope.
Ethan: Can I just say the ugly, grimey yellow tile in Brock’s apartment made me really happy? It felt like one of those small details that only exist, like Harrelson’s ridiculously red wig, to remind you this is all coming out of a comic book, and which end up being a lot more effective for me than, say, an epic $50 million CGI battle in the third act. Probably just out of nostalgia for the movies that were forced to do that back when computers were made out of wood.
Chris: I only have one thing to say: “Hey……I’m sorry about Venom.”
Fahey: It’s not your fault, man. It’s not your fault.

BBC 100 books (with commentary)
thanks for the tag @thegreatorangedragon  As an English major I was compelled to read a lot of these, and I may only have skimmed/read chunks of some of them if I could get away with it....
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen: not my favorite Austen, actually (Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility are 1 & 2) The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien - OMG, SO many times. My siblings and I had rituals around the reading of LOTR.
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte.  Yes - it’s OK Harry Potter series - JK Rowling - Yes!  My kids grew up to them and the experience was almost as good as the books.  But I also really enjoyed watching Rowling mature as a writer over the course of the series.  I don’t ask for perfection from my writers, but warmth and growth.  :-)  Also, they got my stubborn non-reader sons to READ. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee  - like probably every other person who went to MS/HS in the US. The Bible - yes, and twice all the way through.  once at about 10, and then more recently along with Slate’s Blogging the Bible (ok it was just the Old Testament).  That was a stage on my journey to my current fallen-catholicness
Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte - yes, but prefer the Pat Benatar song :D Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell - yes and really need a re-read
His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman - No, keep meaning to. Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
.  Yes, and can I say I love Dickens - LOVE Dickens - but I hate this book.  I think it’s always assigned because it’s shortish.  I regularly reread the glorious messes that are Pickwick Papers, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, and my fav, the insane Our Mutual Friend (but ONLY the Lizzie Hexam/Eugene Wrayburn segments). Little Women - Louisa M Alcott - and the sequels.  I think Jo’s Boys might actually be my favorite. Tess of the D’Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy
.  yes - I am pretty sure??? Catch 22 - Joseph Heller.  read enough of it to count Complete Works of Shakespeare - William Shakespeare; yes! my mom was a Zefferelli Romeo & Juliet junkie - we had the album of the film - and I must have heard it 3 dozen times before I was 7.  She bought a complete works and I read all of it over the years. Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier. No
The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien - Yes.  My husband’s favorite book.  And I really liked the Rankin-Bass film, when I was young.  Birdsong - Sebastian Faulk  No Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger - yeah The Time Traveller’s Wife - Audrey Niffenegger  Realllly?  This is a good book but I’m not sure it belongs on this list.  First novel and feels fresh out of an MFA program.  My other complaints I won’t say here because I tend to get very snarky about this book. (Another book I read around the same time [mid-oughts] was Then We Came to the End, the debut novel of Joshua Ferris - much better, like DeLillo without the air of self-importance.) Middlemarch - George Eliot; love me some Eliot (but prefer Silas Marner, mainly because of a very good tv adaption). Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell - Again: really?  I read this book because I spent the summer between HS and college in a really small town with a teeny library and I basically read my way through the fiction stacks.  Won’t say more than that, because I would get political. The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald Yes, but not a favorite. Bleak House - Charles Dickens. A great, great book for which two amazing miniseries have been done in my lifetime.  But rightly criticized, IMO, for the annoying tone of its first-person narrator, Esther.  Dickens was dazzlingly, spectacularly wrong in writing about women.  Not to mention other groups.  But my god did he skewer institutions on behalf of the (British) poor - none better. This book wins for the Jo’s death scene and its sweeping, bitter, critique of church and state and society and everything - and so human.  “Dead!  And dying thus around us, everyday.”  I was 12 when I first read that, recovering from chicken pox, and I sat straight up in bed.  This is the book that made me a socialist. War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy This is so horrible, but I haven’t! The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams.  Yes, fun, but not a favorite. Brideshead Revisited - Evelyn Waugh - No.  I started to and have a copy at work, for some reason I don’t even remember.  But not enough to county Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky  No :( Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck.  Yes, oh and my grandma’s family were Okies.  Everyone in my family has a copy of the Sacramento Bee front page story sneering about the dust bowl immigrants arriving in town and my great-grandmother is mentioned by name (though they mistakenly think she is her widowed father’s wife).  I love Cali, and Sactown, but we have a long history of being not-so-welcoming to everyone at certain times (was it in the 80s where the “Welcome to California, Now Go Home” bumper stickers were everywhere?).
Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll - yes The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame - yes but so long ago I don’t remember it at all Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy yes. David Copperfield - Charles Dickens.  Yes, not his best by far.  Another “easy” read like Great Expectations Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis - and many other of his works, when I was trying NOT to be an atheist - Mere Christianity, his sci-fi trilogy and Til We Have Faces, a retelling of my favorite myth, Psyche and Cupid.  I like the more obscure books in this series best - The Silver Chair and The Horse and his Boy. Emma - Jane Austen Persuasion - Jane Austen - oh, here it is!

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - CS Lewis .... uh, yes The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini - was a group read at work a couple of years ago.  recommend. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres
Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden Winnie the Pooh - AA Milne - yes Animal Farm - George Orwell - another book I want to re-read. The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown - nope
One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez; YES A Prayer for Owen Meaney - John Irving
The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins ... did I?  I’m pretty sure. Or was it The Moonstone? Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery.  YES.  Anxiously awaiting the new adaption.  Why is it so hard to get Anne of Windy Poplars on kindle?  That is the funniest one.  And Rilla of Ingleside so heartbreaking
Far From The Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy
The Handmaid’s Tale - Margaret Atwood, yes and ever so long ago.  Another book to re-read soon (haven’t started watching the series yet) Lord of the Flies - William Golding Atonement - Ian McEwan; LOVE this book and his writing in general.  He also wrote the screenplay, and the movie and the book are a perfect match in tone.
Life of Pi - Yann Martel No, but on my list Dune - Frank Herbert - no Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons - yes, Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen - yay!
A Suitable Boy - Vikram Seth The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
A Tale Of Two Cities - Charles Dickens - my intro to Dickens, though not his best Brave New World - Aldous Huxley - starting to get depressed at all this dystopian fiction that needs to be re-read as a primer for the present times
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon Love In The Time Of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez - lives at my desk at work.  Not even a favorite book of mine, but I love diving into his words every once in a while Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov The Secret History - Donna Tartt The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold  - when I saw the movie it reminded me why I wasn’t into reading the book Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas - plot better than the story
On The Road - Jack Kerouac Jude the Obscure - Thomas Hardy - yeah, I had to read so much Hardy Bridget Jones’s Diary - Helen Fielding Midnight’s Children - Salman Rushdie - no, want to though
Moby Dick - Herman Melville; I can’t even think about this book without remembering our class discussion of the “circle jerk” chapter.  I remember literally nothing else.
Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens - meh Dracula - Bram Stoker
The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett  - an ALL-TIME favorite Notes From A Small Island - Bill Bryson Ulysses - James Joyce; all hail the master, and the bastard responsible for my sick dependence on the em-dash The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome Germinal - Emile Zola Vanity Fair - William Makepeace Thackeray - unfortunately, yes Possession - AS Byatt A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens; of course Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell The Color Purple - Alice Walker - excellent The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry Charlotte’s Web - EB White: yes The Five People You Meet In Heaven - Mitch Albom Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Yes.  I prefer Dorothy Sayers’ Lord Peter series hands-down, but despite her association with Tolkien, Lewis, et al, she got squashed between Conan Doyle and Christie.  Her Gaudy Night is one of my top five books.
The Faraway Tree Collection - Enid Blyton Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad - yeah The Little Prince - Antoine De Saint-Exupery heck, yeah The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks Watership Down - Richard Adams yes A Confederacy of Dunces - John Kennedy Toole - my kids read this book in HS, so I have a copy lying around, but have never read it A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas Hamlet - William Shakespeare - yes, probably too many times.  What are my favorite Shakespeare dramas?  Maybe King Lear, Richard III? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl. yes
Les Miserables - Victor Hugo

Assault Case Against Charlottesville Blogger Moving Forward
Prosecutors are moving ahead with an assault case against a local blogger.
Jason Kessler is charged with misdemeanor assault and battery, stemming from an incident that occurred Sunday, January 22, on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.
At the time of the incident, the blogger was collecting signatures for a petition to have Charlottesville Vice Mayor Wes Bellamy removed from office.
James Justin Taylor says he approached Kessler to read the petition, saw it was about Bellamy, and called the blogger an [expletive]. Taylor claims Kessler responded by punching him in the face.
Kessler filed an assault charge against Taylor, arguing that he acted in self-defense. In his criminal complaint, Kessler says Taylor, “grabbed the petition and my arm violently” and screamed curse words right into his face.
A court document filed by the prosecution states, “The events of this alleged assault are entirely captured on a camera system mounted on a business adjacent to the event.” The document goes on to say, “the events described by the complaining witness [Kessler] in his criminal complaint did not happen.”
Friday, March 3, the judge granted the prosecution’s motion to dismiss the case against Taylor.
How to Spot a Quality Beauty Blogger or Vlogger
Indeed, using anyone of the numerous exquisite Splendor pointers and make-up tutorials online is lots greater in your price range, and it’s far pretty clean to discover someone whose advice that you like and who posts techniques and product opinions that are relevant to you.
However, not all bloggers and vloggers are identical, and also you should be aware of some matters earlier than you make a decision to follow someone. Here are a few matters to look at out for in addition to a few signs and symptoms of a splendid Splendor blogger that suggest that you may trust their advice once they endorse products and strategies to you.
The primary issue to endure in mind is that many Splendor bloggers and vloggers will be had been backed by positive corporations to give opinions in their gadgets or sell them. some bloggers are glad to try this, while others decide that they could choose no longer to be subsidized and as a substitute be free to check the gadgets that they please.
Even though it is comprehensible that many Splendor vloggers and bloggers do pick out to study certain objects, be aware that there’s an honest and an unethical manner to do that. A sincere blogger will factor out if one in every of their posts is backed, and will inform you in the event that they have been despatched an item free of charge before reviewing it – this means they are now not hiding the truth that their statistics can be promotional.
In addition to this, look out for bloggers who aren’t afraid to say if they dislike a product instead of just pronouncing nice things about it. No object is absolutely perfect, and the sign of a sincere blogger is that they’re no longer afraid to express all of their various opinions on one of the kind items. Therefore, search for someone who’s open approximately sponsorship and sincere in reviewing specific products.
Another sign that the blogger sharing super Splendor recommendations and makeup tutorials online is a reputable and dependable one is that she or he has some enjoy in handling makeup and Splendor merchandise earlier than in their task or career. They’ll, however, be a self-taught man or woman with a few years of makeup as an interest at the back of them.
Either way, look for someone who seems to know what they speak approximately for the nice hints and the best effects. a few Splendor bloggers previously worked on Splendor counters or are skilled in Beauty therapy, while others have completed dress makeup for local theater productions or currently paintings as makeup artists.
Even though it is truthful to mention that, sure, every person can grow to be a blogger or vlogger and supply super Beauty guidelines and make-up tutorials online, some degree of expertise can come up with lots of self-assurance in what you’re being taught.

The way to Create a Case File Number
In reviewing numerous regulation office case management software applications, we are constantly surprised by the Number of over-priced packages that have “mechanically creates a case Number” excessive at the list of capabilities as if it is a hard element to do, or maybe amazing as a package feature. Too, most of these programs clearly create a 6-digit Number and begin at 000001 then go to 000002 and so forth and do not assist you to customize.
We advise that case numbers must be codes that let you know a lot more than an easy Wide variety does, but at the same time, must have a simple layout so you can effortlessly create them and read them on the fly.
Let’s examine an easy but informative case Number:
Let’s damage this down a bit:
20100310 is the date. Use the descending date layout considering that it is less complicated to appearance up cases with a time-frame reference. Descending dates are arranged beginning with the year, then the month, then day, so in the example above, the case was commenced on March 10th, 2010. Next, is a -letter code of your desire that suggests what kind of case that is. In our instance above, “FL” stands for “Family regulation.” Here are a few recommendations: CL – Settlement law, PP – Product / Technique, CD – Crook Defense, and many others. You can bypass this in case you only exercise one kind of regulation. Your Sub-Code is a 2d -letter code clarifying the type of case. In our Circle of relatives law instance above, “CC” stands for Child Custody. Create a list of relevant sub-codes and hold these indexed in a “reference File” at the side of your case-kind codes from
The use of the patron’s initials as part of your case Range is optionally available depending on the sensitivity of the case and the customer’s preference for anonymity. In our example, we made up the name “Jane Smith” and used JS. We definitely do no longer propose Using the customer’s name inside the case Wide variety. When you have a client which can provide multiple instances, put the real Quantity of the case for that patron in parenthesis. In this case, this will be our 9th case for Jane Smith. If that is a single case with the little hazard of repeat commercial enterprise from this consumer, you may not need to position any numbers at the give up.
Guidelines and Recommendations:
While developing a case Record Quantity, use it While naming phrase processor or spreadsheet files so everything can be searched and/or referred to as up The use of the case Quantity. Additionally, write the Range on any folders and use it on stickers that could pass on CD / DVD cases, cassette tapes, evidence boxes, and so on. Naming your computer documents Also makes it clean to look considering the fact that most systems will permit you to look for a part of the Record name The usage of some form of “wild card” inclusive of the asterisk*. For instance, in case you desired to look a listing of all Own family law cases in 2010, you’d input the quest string 2010*FL*.document (in case you were searching for Microsoft word ® files). not simplest that, however truly list them by means of File name will automatically show them in chronological order by way of the distinctive feature of their case Variety by myself.
