Still reeling from that episode - but involving any member of vox machina for laudnas resurrection seems so risky. Like even hand waving Keyleth not resurrecting Will (one of her own people) for obvious sweet backstory angst, why would she help keep the vessel of Deliah Briarwood “active”? That’s a huge threat. Hopefully etheross comes through with someone.

I think its hard to say what a VM would do here, as an NPC or as past PCs (because expectation and perception absolutely differs depending on which of the two we're thinking about). I will say that, having a powerful NPC be maybe able to Do A Thing, and running the risk of said NPC having personal past conflicts or agendas or opinions that might interfere or collide with your ask- is a pretty standard thing to account for, when dealing with a high powered NPC. I guess the main difference here is that we know, precisely and intimately, about a potential reason for the NPC's face to go cold, and for them to give a kind but final "No." But from the Bells point of view? As PC's looking at an NPC? Its as dangerous as any other option, really.

Now out of universe, IMO, there's a whole cluster of storytelling and character and narrative balance things to contend with if they go that route, not going to pretend otherwise. I think it'll be tricky to balance, and I don't envy Matt or the cast for needing to thread that needle if they choose it.

Anyway, I've got my personal preferences, as I'm sure everyone does, but I assume a lot of it will come down to execution. Fingers crossed for good news for Laudna, either way.

Hcs for everyone realized their gifts in Encanto

(in timeline order)

Juileta: honeslty one of the hardest gifts to figure out, but one of the parts about the door is that it shows the gift to some extent, so I think they would have seen the food and herbs and rushed her to the kitchen. The first thing she made was simple and they had some people try it, and someone said their headache went away. The whole thing would have been really confusing cause she was the first one to get a gift and it was hard to figure it out

Pepa: she would have been next and like 10 mins after Juileta cause it took a while to figure out her hermana mayor's (older sister's) gift. Naturally she was a little annoyed, but as we know Pepa never feels things halfway, so the second the door appears a raincloud also appeared with it, Alma was grateful that was an easier gift to figure out, but concerned that there was now a raincloud in Casita

Bruno: I personally think he got a mini vision (not smth that required any focus) but he got a vision and his eyes flashed green and he told his mamá what he saw and not two seconds later it happened (Pepa tripped and caused thunder, exactly like Bruno predicted)

As for knowing how to do bigger visions, I think once his door appeared he just knew, kinda like how Camilo, later, would have just knew how to shape shift (that doesn't apply to Juileta, her cooking skills improved rápidamente (rapidly) but she still had to learn), but instead of it just popping in his head it was more like muscle memory so he had to know what his gift was first

Now the grandkids

(Note that unlike Camilo and Mirabel, Isabela and Dolores have no way of telling which is older so I'm using my hc)

Isabela: she is up next, she seems like she would be the eldest grandchild because being the eldest tends to mean you have a great deal of pressure on you, she is pressured the most even to the point of being pressured to marry while no one has mentioned anything like that to Dolores

I think that as Isabela touched the door she sensed her parents, the village, and even her Abuela's excitement. At 5 she didn't feel any pressure and was just happy, and her gift reflected that, she created a crown of roses on her head and so so excited that she covered the rails of the stairs in them (she only thought she could create roses and other pretty flowers until the cactus is because from the seocnd she got her gift that was all she made)

Dolores: I think Isabela and Dolores are around 8ish months apart, Isabela doesn't necessarily overshadow her, but they don't seem all that close

When it came time for Dolores's gift I think the door would have showed upa dne everyone would have clapped and cheered and it would have been really loud for her and she would have freaked out and covered her ears and Pepa was freaking out cause her hija (daughter) was screaming at the sound, and Félix was definitely shushing everyone

Luisa: Her's is like her mamá's because without her door it wouldn't be very obvious, but I hc that she was a big hugger as a kid, and as soon as her door appeared she just hugged the person closest to her (probably Alma) and they were all surprised when a 5 year old was able to pick up her Abuela in a bear hug (this one's really wholesome and I like it lol)

Camilo: His would have been one of the easier ones imo, we know he shapeshifts involuntarily when he feels strong emotion and the he shapeshifts to are people are related, so that would have happened. He probably thinking about his Abuela, maybe his Tío Bruno, Mirabel, and his parents, so it's easy to believe that the second his hand touched the door handle he switched between all of them, ending on Abuela, until he looked down at his hands, was shocked then changed back to himself (Alma almost fainted brcuase it was so quick and unexpected)

For Mirabel and Antonio, we know how theirs went

skz: i think i’ve only dreamt about skz once!! but we were spies on some sort of secret mission in a super fancy hi tech futuristic school and we had to sneak in through the vents and stuff it was really fun !!

Daichi x reader

Third person POV

This was a usual lunch for Daichi and (Y/N) they have been best friends sinces they started High School, along with Kyoko, Sugawara and Asashi. Daichi started to have feeling for her sinces their second year, he started to know her better that year. He was going to confess to her this year now that it was their last, but she started dating a second year during the summer. He was the first to know and that hurt him but he was happy for him.

Now they were here in their homeroom having lunch. Daichi was eating from his bento while (Y/N) was eating some yakisoba bread. This is what they recently have been doing, not that Daichi was complaining.

“What are you going to do after school?” (Y/N) said has she took a bite of her bread.

“Well, we have mid-terms coming up. So, i need to study to have a good grade to be able to play.” Said Daichi has he shoved some rice in his mouth. When he looked up he could notice that she was scared.

“Crap, I forgot about the mid-terms.” She cursed has she opened her bag to take out her calendar.

“That is what you get for paying attention to makoto and not the class.” He mentioned her girlfriends name and she got tensed.She noticed that the air got a bit tences, she decided to tell him the truth.

“We aren’t talking recently. She has been really mad at me because i haven’t been paying attention to her. I think she wants to break up with me, she has been meaning to talk to me but i just been ignoring her call.” (Y/N) confessed to him, She put her food down and wrapped up again.

“Well the question is, Do yoy still want to be with her?” Daichi asked her. She kept quiet, she didn’t know what to answered, she did want to breack up but at the same time she didn’t. It was her last year she will still see her. But she knew what ever came out of her mouth wast her answer. She was about to answer him but the bell rang signaling that class was about to start.

“See ya at practice.” she stood up and went to her class that was with Kyoko with his question still in (Y/N)’s mind. After class she decide of her answer, she turned back to see kyoko and started to talk to her.

“Kyoko, i know that i was suppose over some of the notes to have written down recently but i need to do something and i don’t know how long it will take. Can we go over it tomorrow?” (Y/N) asked her has she put her hand together bowing. Kyoko looked at her and started to talk.

“(Y/N) we’re in the same grade you don’t need to bow at me.”

“Yes I do you are a goddess.” She said.

“It’s fine. we will go over it tomorrow.” Kyoko reassured.

“Oh, thank you Kyoko.” (Y/N) said has she hugged her, then grabbed her bag and went to the first flor to change her shoes. She started to jog down the hill she was going a particular way to meet someone, Because she knows that what she is about to do needs to be done in person. She deserved that at least.

While she was heading to the house, the boys just started their laps. Daichi was quiet and Sugawara took noticed.

“Oi, Daichi. Why are you so quiet?”

“Just thinking of something.”

“Daichi, Suga. Where is (Y/N) i want her to give me some pointer for Kyoko.” Said Tanaka with Nishinoya trailing after him.

“Yeah, the last pointer was working and we need more.” Nishinoya said between breaths.

“Well, she is suppose to be with Kyoko.” Daichi looked to the other side of the gym and Kyoko was with the first. He didn’t know where (Y/N) was she doesn’t skip.

“Kyoko, sorry to bother you but where is (Y/N)?” He asked still keeping step.

“She said she needed to take care of something.” she yelled back

“Okay, thanks.”

“Wow, and here I though that lover boy would know.” Tanaka said has he ran quicker so that Daichi wouldn’t catch him

“OI.” Daichi yelled.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Three month pass, cause time is an ilusion~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Damn it, they did an aticle of that butt weasel, Oikawa.” Tnaka said with anger in his voice.”

“I’m no suprice his super talented. Well, what does it say.” Asked Sugawara looking over Tnakas shoulder.

“Well, Tooru Oikawa favorite food is milk bread and his personal motto is ‘If your gonna hit it, Then hit til it breaks’. UHG.” Tanaka yelled.

“Well, he can hit me till i’ll break.” They were all shocked. They never expected those words to come out of her mouth. Even Tsukishima was shocked at what came out of her mouth. That could not have been real.

“Well, keep reading.”

“Right. Looks like the third years are staying on the team so the can get revenge on shiratorisawa. IT’S GOING TO TAKE A LOT MORE TO BEAT ME.

“AND ME” both Tanaka and Hinata yelled and then Suga hit Tanaka so that he wouldn’t break the magazine. Then Sugawara started to to talk about Ushiwaka and that he made the world youth team. When Daichi heard that he said.

“We have to talk down Oikawa and Ushiwaka.”

“Oi, Daichi you have no reason being that sexy.” Said (Y/N) again the boys didn’t know what to think. They were determine to beat the both. But they were completely confused at all the stuff that (Y/N) has been saying. They continue on ignoring what she just said, well except for Daichi, he kept that in mind.

“ALL RIGHT LET’S GET TO WORK.”

“YEAH” the guys yelled back at Daichi. While they started their training at heartbreak heel, (Y/N) stayed behind with Daichi watching all the boy go up. When they were alone she started to talked to him.

“Daichi, how do you get such great thighs. God, they look great?” She praised her friend has she looked at his thighs. Daichi was blushing slightly, he didn’t know how to react. On one side she has a girlfriend on the other he was kinda loving it. They started to walk and he decided to talk.

“Well, you should know this by now. You have to stay alert in a game so i do a lot leg work outs.” He said has he kept jogging, he knew that if he ran she might no be able to hear or keep up with him.

“Wow, leg days does work.”

when she said that they arrived at the summit, Daichi started to talk. they all went back down and Suga got close to Daichi and started to whisper something to him.

“Daichi, do you know if there is something up with (Y/N)?”

“I really don’t know. She’s just been hitting on me and I don’t hate it but i feel weird about it.”

“Same here, doesn’t she have a girlfriend.”

“Yeah.” they looked back and they could see her talking to Asashi. For the pass month she has been started to develop feeling for the Karasuno Captain, even though they are friends, she started to look at him in a different light. It was weird for her but good in a way. So, she did what was natural complement the ell out of him. When they got back to the gym, they were divided in to teams to start their own practice match even though Hinata and Kageyama weren’t there. (Y/N) on the other hand was talking to Kyoko about trying to get a first year has a manager but she was also trying to keep and eye on Daichi.

“The whole team started to notice that she was keeping an eye on him, even sometimes when he was squating they could see her trying to move so that she could see Daichs ass. This was getting weird at this point, they all though the same. Those this count as cheating?

And Tsukishima was the only one with the ball to say it.

“OI, (Y/N)”

“Yeah, Tsukki?”

“Can you stop looking at the caps ass?” Then has if the whole team was connected. ‘He said it!’

“But why he has such a great ass.” They were all a blushing mess, Even Tanaka and Nishinoya. This can not be happening, Daichi counldn’t take it anymore. He turn to her and said.

“Stop saying stuff like that! You have a girlfriend.”

“No, i don’t.”

“What?” The guys said

“Me and Mako broke up.” She confessed. But now that had an even bigger question.

“But don’t you go for the other team?” Nishinoya asked

“ You are allowed to say the word lesbian, Yu.” She told Nishinoya has she put her clip board down and stood up. At this point the boys had stoped playing, they were all looking at her.

“And no. I go for both. It’s called LGBTQ+ the B is there for Bisexual not Butter you idiots.” They were shocked they shouldn’t have been shocked but they still were.

“I though Kyoko told you guys that?” They all looked at Kyoko even more shocked. She knew and she didn’t tell anyone.

“Kyoko, why didn’t you tell them.”

“I though you wanted to keep it a secret.” This was crazy.

“Nice.” was the first thing thst same out of Daichi’s mouth. He got clouser to her, she looked up at him. He was tall but not by much and then he started to talk again. “This means that i can ask you out on a date?”

Now the one that was shocked was her. She was not expecting this at all, not even from him. She got exited.

“Yes.”(Y/N) said with a smile on her face.

“Then would you like to go on a date?” Daichi asked has he wrapped his hands around her waist and pulled her in towards himself.

“Yes” She closed the gap with a kiss. When she pulled away she told him.

“Also have i told you that i love you hand? I wonder what else can they do.” When she finished her sentence Daichi had a blush all over his face.

Lightning Returns : A

Hoperai game

I saw a few posts before playing the game saying that this is a Hoperai game (and how right you were) !!!

Okay, so I have an idea to write every moment that they have as soon as possible,because I'm starting to forget, so after I play I'll be posting the notes that I have here in my Iphone.

Obs: English is my third language*, please be aware of that when you see a mistake :v

By the way guys, both of them werent supposed to have feelings, a few moments in the game Light admits that she is unable to feel anything and that god probably made that to avoid any future problems/Hope is like this as well, but STILL, they demonstrate care for each other. (Later we talk about Lumina and Bhenivelze)

And another thing that gets me intrigade is how come there is not many post about LR here in the hoperai tag ? This game is amazing !! (like, it does have a few times that you get annoyed, but in general is amazing)

First moment: Okay, this is a simple one, after Lightning crash the Patron's party, she refers to Hope as "Mr Hope Estheim", hell yeah. (This is how she is goint to call him in bed) THIS HAPPENS IN THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES IN THE GAME, I do believe that this happens because she still doesn't fell really connect with him, its been sooo long since they were together in FFXIII, that she might think that Hope may not like her anymore, so she really is formal here.

Second: (Well, after I went to ark and saw a younger hope I was frustated, nevertheless, its possible to interact with Hope, he explains that he will be there to help us in this task and that he is in his younger body but doesnt know why.

Third: The loading screen saying that she sees Adult!Hope as an equal (Hell yeah) and I think this is quite nice, because Lightning would never engage a relationship if she doesnt see that special someone as a person beneth her, she is a woman of huge morals and we see that she belives that men have to be amazing (this is using her approval on Snow as info, where she said she would never giver her blessing if he was someone that didnt deserve)

Fourth: if you get hurt and dont use any potion Hope will say that he's worried.

Fifth: Welllll, this one I simpled loved, when we have to get fireworks for the play and Lightning is forced to say "Meow Meow Choco Chow" to Chocolina and Hope is listening and tease her.

"Something tells me you're not enjoying this as much as I am"

Sixth: ( mental note - I would pay for hear Hope complimenting her looks on that red dress - WTF WATANABE, WHY HAVENT YOU DONE THIS ???? ) but the fact that he was manipulated by Benivelzhe might have been the reason, because if he been himself (100%himself all them at that time, oh boy, he would fall from the ark -- I know that I would)

Note: Okay, so there is a cutscene where we see Hope, Snow and Noel deciding to save the world after the chaos spread, and Hope is an adult here, I wonder that happened --- Btw, I finished the game and Still dont understand clearly what happened to Hope, I know that there is a Dlc in FFXIII-2 that I havent played (it is in this DLC that adult!Hope see Lightning in Vahalla ?)

Seven(THEIR DAUGHTER): this is not a nice one, because after we see Vanille, Hope ask of her to Lightning and she tease him with something like "Someones got a crush" BUT not long after that we get a HUGE moment where Eclair is worried about the plan (where she will play a role in front of a crowd and it might fail) and Hope basically quotes her saying "Its not a question of can or cant" and then she asks if he is going to watch her back (PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GAME DOESNT SHOW HER FACE IN THIS MOMENT, I WONDER WHY ????? WE ALWAYS SEE HER FACE ON THE INTERACTIONS WHY IN THIS ONE WE CANT ??? ITS BECAUSE SHE IS WAITING FOR HIS ANWSER ??? I WAS NOT READY FOR THAT)

And guys, even tho Hope is there to assist the player to finish the game and keeps saying what we have to do (And I find this utterly annoying) they have some incredible casual talk, like, "I dont care if the whole world hates you Light, i'll be by your side"

Well, in one of the interactions with Lumina where she is trying to convince us that Benivelzhe is manipulating us with a Fake Serah, Lightning starts to belive her and gets really mad at her god saying that she was building a contigence plan and is willing to kill Bhenivelze, until Lumina says that Hope is a fake too...

Lightning reaction... DAMNNN

And then Lumina asks

"Would you be able to kill Hope if you need ?"

Lightning close every glimpse of feeling and answer:

"Do you think im not ?

Lumina is so clever that she reads her in a instant and starts to laugh --- BTW, Lumina is nothing but another part o a whole, she is Lightning aswell, WHY WE HAVE THIS REACTION by her part ?? (hehe)

Lumina says : "Answering a question with another question"

That was so good, after this we can interact with Hope but Light never says anything about him being a fake, but still he says that if she wants to betray god he will follow her no matter what. (Guys, do you understand that he is saying that if she want to go in a suicide fucking mission he will go with her ???? AGAIN)

And then, the last day finally arrives, we are going to Luxerion but before we leave the ark Hope says:

"It really feels like the end now. Soon it will be over now"

Lightning then anwser

"Its been dying for 500 years"

His tone of voice slightly change

"I wasnt talking about the world..."

"Then what?"

He accept that is not the time.

"Nevermind. Time is short. Every minute counts, lets no waste any"

BTW IN THE SAME ARK MOMENT, if you ask about Serah being stuck in the chaos (considering that all souls go to chaos after dying) Hope promises that if he dies, he would find a way to save Serah's soul...

FangxVanille moment in the cathedral (I know that this is my Hoperai post, but that was lit )

Hope (God Mode) I kind knew that he was going to be used by Bhenivelze as a vessel because I saw a few spoilers, but there is one thing that I dont understand --- WHY THE FUCK NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING WHEN THEY SEE HOPE ?? THEY WERE FRIENDS FOR FUCKING SAKE--- Even when is just Fang in the wildlands, Hope and her NEVER interact, she doesnt it even bother to ask " who are talking to Lightning in the phone?"

And finally the ending, Lightning defeat the evil god of light, and is willing to be the new Etro taking care of the darkness flow, but there is something here, a moment where she sees fake Serah and Lumina, and we discover that God never took her feelings, that was always her, she had shut down her feelings a long time ago to become stronger

Note: In the middle of the game we see that she is willing to die, and if you see the loading screens you see the same info.

And she fuse with Lumina, and after all the things she heard from fake Serah she is scared... Her feelings that she always repressed was back to her and she felt alone, darkness consuming her and there is tears, so many tears until...

FINALLY, FINALLY, the one who saves everyone was saved, he sacrificed his chance to be born in the new world with his parent, to save the woman that he lovessssss

I dont know what to say, this is just a bunch of notes of me bamblimg some things, but im so glad that she was saved, that she didnt feel scared, that he came back for her.

There is that quote from FFXIII where Vanille talk about Eclair.

"When the fear sank in, it tore us apart. Lightning was hurting but none of us could see it"

This is different now, he can see it, he knows that she was scared, that she deservs to be saved and loved, that she needs someone to watch her back !!!!

Hoperai is kind of Canon and I loved thst ending, most amazing CGI ever.

Side quests: I know that with the timer this game gets a little trick with the side quest, but there is some random moments here.

But these called my attention

Olga, the singer

I've encountered a quest about a woman looking for her lover, and we learn that she is a singer but cant sing without the lyrics of the man she loves , after we find him we complete the quest, there will be a song (requested by Lumina) and I saw Hoperai all over it, okay, Light says "Serah loved this song" but the lyrics were all about Hope and Light.

Btw, I can totally see mama Farron singing this to their daughters, and Lumina kind is Lightning, so she knows that this is her favorite song aswell.

The one that we have to find the special flower for the chocoboo

Ha, who would say that we would be hearing that Lightning sucks at cooking ? Well, she admits that the only thing she knows how to cook is Beheamoth steak in a campfire

And we get to hear she trying to talk to her chocoboo saying "Kweh Kweh" such lovely moment and Hope was hearing everything

Gordon Gourmet

Well, this quest has and amazing ending, like super wow, after we taste the the gourmet recipe Lightning is amazed, she says that is probably the best thing she ever ate, so, Hope got curious and they start a conversation: (my memory is not great, but it goes like this)

Hope: That food is that good ?

Lightning: Do you want me to pack some for you?(such a wonderful waifu)

Hope: No thanks, but sometime I want to taste something made by you

Lightning: Well, Im not the best chef... I never spent much time in the kitchen, but if you like, I do a Behemoth steak by the campfire that is really good.

(This is the SECOND TIME in the game that she says that she can cook Behemoth) 😂

Chocoboo clothes

After a lot of "Chow chow choco chow" we win a nice outfit from the Chocoboo girl, Hope got a little bit excited and says that she must look really good on it, they have a nice conversation after.

Adornments

Hope jokes that Light should wear a lot of endornemts, to attrack more people to save.

Here we see that Light is pretty humble when people say that she is beautiful, she doesnt see herself as the perfect looking woman that she is.

Sazhs quest / Kid who always steals shit from us

I like this moment for a reason, thoose quests make Hope and/or Light relate to their situation, I will make a super post about this later and this is pretty important.

After Sazhs quest, in Ark Hope stops Lightning and revels a little bit about his situation with his father and how he was raised, Lightning stands quiet and just listen.

After we see a kid (the little shit who steals from us) and deliver the letter from his father, Lightning says how hard was for her to lose both of her parents, Hope just listen.

Soooo, this is it, I loved the game (hope you loved too), I still feel that Watanabe was not brave enough, he could made Hope an a adult in the thirdy game and put some scenes where he save her with a KISS (FRENCH PLEASE) but he made Tracer of memories to make more clear that Hope really have feelings for her and that she is going after him in the new world.

Note : im making a super post about them and I just want to thank this amazing tag/fandom, I know that this game is old and not so many are here now, but you all left soo many good things here and im really thankful.

ONDEKOZA again.

So lemme just start by saying this is the second attempt at thumbfucking this post out on my phone in the Stumblr app. First time I was almost all the way through the post when I dipped out to grab a link to a video and when I flipped back to this app guess what, fucking post had fucked off into fuck knows where. Pissed. Me. Off. Anyway.

Exactly one month ago I was visited by opportunity in the form of a Saturday work day which I was told at the last minute (on Friday) that I didn’t actually need to attend. Mental wheels started frantically spinning. What was it that I had thought about doing or going to but in the end gave up on the idea because of travel time and difficulty finding a place to stay... oh shit yeah, Ondekoza is playing kinda sorta nearby. Righty-O then. I immediately got busy contacting the boss (this woman I live with who is the mother of our children) and asked her if she minded if I took the car and fugged off for the weekend. She was like “how soon can you be gone?” Hahaha no not really. She just said sure go ahead just be careful. Then I got in touch with Naoto, the one member of Ondekoza who I talk with regularly, and asked if it’d be ok for me to drive out and stay with them and help set up and tear down for their show and whatever. A positive reply came rather quickly so a last minute plan came together and Saturday morning off I went.

They were doing workshops and fun things, as well as playing a full concert (outdoors, on a stage set up in the middle of a terraced rice field area) to bring a week-long artsyfartsy event to a close. What was the event called again? Something like Umi-no-Stage 2019 (Umi means ocean, sea or beach), featuring workshops and performances by mostly off the wall/weirdo/wacky artists (right up my alley) held in a wee rustic hamlet (so small it’s almost not on maps) called Tagarasu (literally means Rice Field Crow, I dig it) near Obama City (yes, they made a big deal outta that when Drumpf’s predecessor was in office), in Fukui Prefecture (not “fuckyouey” hahaha no, “fooh-kooh-wee”) on the Sea of Japan side. Enough parentheses in that last sentence for you? Hehe. So as you can see on the map, google maps said it would be a two hour drive if I took the non-toll roads. Lemme tell you, freeways are anything but free here. The routes on the left and right on that map had tolls of $40 and $50 each, one way, so I was like the hell with that. It was an easy drive anyway once I got out of the urban sprawl and traffic jam factory of Kyoto City itself. Then it was twisty mountain roads, fresh, cool air, and scenic routes through mountain forests and alongside rivers in valleys. I thought it quite ironic and a helluva coincidence that I ended up driving the westernmost length of a road which I had ran the easternmost part of a few weeks prior on an overnighter with the third graders for work. Here’s a shot of the road sign:

ACCIIIIIIIIIIEEED!!!!!! So before I knew it I arrived in one piece, parked at a beach access parking lot that said “$10 a day, pay at the front” but I was like “I’m with Ondekoza, can I park here? Oh by the way do you know which house they’re in right now?” And the confused looking lady in charge grabbed a guy who was event staff and had him take me to where I needed to go, and in the end I found out that the fee is for people who want to go fishing out on the breakwaters there so whatever.

No sooner had I walked in the door and exchanged greetings than they tell me “we’ve got a job for you today.” Cool. I thought they’d ask me to write up something in English, or maybe do some lettering like make a sign or something, chalk art, whatever. Nope. “We want you to play shime-daiko for a five minute or so attention-getter we’re gonna play to fire people up for tomorrow’s show. It’s a mashup of Utsu Hachijo and Yatai Bayashi. Cool?” Jeeeeezus are you kidding me? Yeah ok I’m familiar with those pieces but it’s been ages, literally 27 years since I practiced them with the then-members of Ondekoza when they came to my hometown and stayed a few weeks during the latter part of their America Marathon Tour (I think maybe it was called the Odyssey tour?). Anyway. Moro-kun (the newest/youngest member?) and I sit down and start brainstorming. We talk out the arrangement of the piece and how it will progress, then do a “rehearsal” drumming out our parts on the table there. All was good. He was sweating bullets, really nervous about the whole thing. I was like “when are we supposed to do this?” And he said “in about half an hour.” HOLY SHIT FOR REAL?! Yikes. Ok ok ok, let’s run through this one more time, cool? We did. No problem. Moro-kun was still a bundle of nerves. I was like “Right. We got this. Let’s go! It’ll all work out in the end.”

Before we were on though, a small, quite out-there modern dance outfit called Monochrome Circus put on a performance at the hamlet’s shrine, so we hit that on our way. Here’s a photo of the entrance as seen from the street:

Fantastic atmosphere. The director of the group gave a short introduction, then explained what the first performance would be. In Japan, there’s a super popular style of comic called the yon-koma-manga (four-frame comic strip). Quite like the funnies in the daily newspapers back home actually. They would set a scene somewhere within the shrine grounds, then one person at a time would enter the scene, strike a pose and freeze, until four people had entered and then the audience would be prompted to say “FINISHED!” For the first one, the group members showed what the deal was so everyone would get it. From the second one on, they asked members of the audience to join in. I ran over to the stairs you can see in the photo, whipped out my iPhone and sat down, pretending to be messing with it—an homage to the modern mindless moron that today’s society overflows with so profusely. The second person came and stood behind me looking over my shoulder. I couldn’t see where the third or fourth people ended up. FINISHED!!! This kept on for a few more rounds, then the group did a few dances, which were really nice actually, and not SO out there. Then it was time to go. Righty-O. Let’s go!

Yeah so when we got to the seawall there, I didn’t get stage fright until it was time to take off my shoes and socks and sit down in front of the drum. Biggest goof? Forgetting to take off my damn sunglasses. Duhhhhhh. At least I managed to keep in time and didn’t fuck up disastrously, though the sticks were a helluva lot thicker and longer than the sticks I’m used to (Ondekoza makes all their drumsticks by hand). But it ain’t everyday you get to play with Ondekoza, so I’m glad I had the chance.

After that we just hung out, did dinner, then walked around checking out the sunset.

Not too shabby. In the evening, a wacko but fun group called something like the Tōhoku Six Prefecture Rock-n-rollers gave a show at the same stage Ondekoza would be using the next day so we went and saw that. Fun, crazy shit. Then off to bed.

The next morning we were up by 5:45, and then it was off on the daily 6am run. Everyone split up and went off on their own though and I was like WHAAAT?! So instead of going solo and getting completely the fuck lost, I tagged along with Naoto. What a scenic run! Through tunnels and down twisty roads that hugged the coastal sides of the smallish mountains there. The view was fantastic. We reached a turnaround point and Naoto said “I’ve got breakfast duty so I need to head back.” No problem. I followed him back, then ran an extra 1km and a bit. Still it totalled about 7km, three short of their daily 10km run (they don’t strictly adhere to this distance though, they’ve become a bit more flexible and I don’t think it’s a bad thing—when they were founded and when they ran in the US when I spent time with them they all ran together as a group but not anymore). Shower, breakfast, then a full-on day of setting up. After the setting up part was done, they had a soundcheck and mini rehearsal. I snapped this photo while that was going on.

What a place. Beautiful. Absolute nightmare for music though, as far as acoustics are concerned. But it all worked out. Two o’clock arrived and concertgoers started mozying in. We retreated to a large tent that was set up as a dressing room. They changed into their performing outfits, and I just zoned out for a bit. Before they go on, they always do this ritual of making a circle and doing warmup exercises, then adjacent members hold hands, and they do a little pre-game cheer of sorts. I was invited to join in all this so I was pleasantly surprised. Then it was GAME ON!!! I shot video of the whole show, and here’s a photo from Instagram of them playing Ōdaiko with me at the right shooting video.

Hahaa a cameo. Gimme a break. Anyway I’ll put a link to the video here in a sec but I just want to say they told the audience that video and photos were prohibited, so I set the video to “unlisted” and the only way to see it is if you have the link. They don’t really mind people seeing the video, it’s more a concern about people taking photos or video and then trying to sell it. Right then, here you go:

It’s about an hour twenty minutes or so. Hope you have nice speakers too. Yeah. So it was a fantastic show in an idyllic, beautiful environment. Then it was time to tear down and pack up. We had quite a bit of help this time so it was over within about an hour. Then they were gonna drive north along the Sea of Japan, heading to catch a ferry way up in Aomori, on their way to their annual Hokkaidō camp and concert, before heading off to a two week stint in China. I said a sincere thanks for being allowed to tag along, let them know that I really appreciated it, and then the director (Mr Matsuda) said “C’mon, you’re family! And besides that, you get shit done! Having you here was a huge help and it’s you who should be thanked.” I was floored. Did not expect to be told that. Wow. So it was in very high spirits thst I made the drive back home, arriving safely, but still full of adrenaline. What a weekend.

The next time I’ll get to fool around with them will be in September when they’ll be in Nagoya for a concert. I’m cooking up a plan to design and have vinyl stickers made for them to sell at shows and events while I’m back in the US this summer. 123stickers.com man, vinyl fucking stickers for reasonable prices and the damn things last forever. I’ve slapped a shitload of small ones here and there around Osaka and Kyoto over the years and they’re still there, in great shape. Graffiti background bared for all to see huh? Hahaha. Anyway. However, if she is around people she does NOT trust or consider her friend, she'll likely only give you a few curt words that are at least kind as opposed to her condescending norm. When off duty, she wears normal, loose fitting, and simple tops that don't interfere with her biocybernetics and Life Support (for comfort). Backstory: Lilo grew up normally for the most part, if not with the knowledge of having a brighter mind than most her age on account of her two omnic adoptive parents telling her so as much as they did. She was able to go to a small exclusive school for learning due to her wealthy living early on. However...when the omnic crisis hit she immediately spurned her parents and went into hiding on her own. In this time she set up her own little computer like setup where she did a lot of underground research as a way to get to the root of all of the problems. However, just as she came close to finding an important piece of the puzzle her hideout was found by looters who stole and wrecked her equipment and left her beat up on the streets. On that very day the omnics invaded her town. An explosion caught her as have tried to flee and blew off her arms and legs. When she awoke next she was under the lights of a Vanderwood doctor table light and having her vitals stabilized. Over the next few years she was customized with robotic gear that kept her alive and trained to be what she is now. While she owes her life the agency and her cause, she never really liked picking sides.
