Finally Getting Help (prt 5)
Masterpost
It took a little convincing to get Jazz to come back with them, but she didn’t want to stay with Constantine because he ‘smelled like cigarettes and generational trauma’ and she couldn’t stay alone. So in the end she agreed to come back to Wayne manor with the promise that Tim would help walk her through the process of getting emancipated since he’d already done it before. Dick informed Agent A they’d be having another new person for dinner and asked Jazz if she had any allergies, which was also a no. Apparently the Fentons tended to be a very hearty family.
They took the jet back, dropping Jazz off at the manor before parking in the batcave and changing into civics as quickly as they could so they could go greet her. Before they could Alfred sent a video on the family group chat. The video started with Danny pacing in the foye, then the door opened and Jazz hesitantly let herself in only to be greeted by a battering ram of Brother hurtling towards her.
She managed to get her arms up in time to catch Danny with an Oof before they just clung to each other. Awww, why weren’t any of Dick’s siblings like that with him?! Something to bully them about later.
—----
“What happened?” Danny whispered against Jazz’s chest.
“The Justice League finally stepped up and dealt with it. Locked the portal, took away mom and dad and Vlad, I don’t know what will happen with any of them but it’s not our fault whatever it is. It’s not our responsibility or our problem, I’m going to focus on university and you’re going to focus on keeping yourself and the babies healthy and safe.” She said softly, feeling Danny wince.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the babies, I just didn’t know how too,” Danny said, and Jazz could feel how he tensed, expecting her to be angry with him.
“It’s okay little brother, I understand. That was a lot to process, I’m sure you would have told me soon,” She murmured and he nodded. “Danny, did he… did he rape you?” Jasmine forced herself to ask softly. She didn’t think so, but she just needed to know.
“No, he stole my DNA and tried to clone me. But it didn’t work and Danielle and the other clones were melting. I don’t know how many he tried but I can’t imagine he started in batches of ten. I could only save two, Daniella and one of the boys. It was awful. I don’t know how long they’ll need to stay inside me to fully develop but they can take all the time they need. I can feel them inside me, I can feel their love. I love them too, they’re my babies Jazz, I know I’m young but…”
“You’re going to be a great parent Danny,” Jazz promised softly, giving him a gentle squeeze. “And I’m going to be the best aunt and babysitter you could ask for.”
She didn’t realize he was crying until his laugh came out audibly wet. “I’m sure you will. Thank you Jazz.”
“No problem Danny. What about the Wayne’s, you trust them? You think you’ll be okay here? I’ll going to Gotham U so I’ll be close. I’d like to work at Arkham anyway.”
“Ya, they seem good, I’ll be fine here Jazz. Don’t worry.”
“I’ll always worry about you little brother,” Jazz said softly and Danny laughed again, trying to wipe his face as subtly as he could before he pulled back and finally let go.
Alfred cleared his throat delicately to remind them he was still there, though Jazz was glad he hadn’t interrupted their moment. “Dinner is ready when you are Master Danny, Miss Jazz,” he said with a nod and disappeared back down the hall towards the dining room.
“Well I’m starving, I haven’t eaten anything since breakfast!” Jazz said as she started to steer them both after Alfred.
“I’m pretty much always hungry,” Danny admitted with a chuckle. “The little ones take a lot of energy and I need to replace it somehow I goes,” He said touching his stomach in a way she now realized he’d been doing a lot. How had she missed that?
“Well you eat as much as you need to, and any cravings too. They probably have nutrients you and the baby need. You should see a doctor too. I know you probably went to see Frostbite already but you’re still half human and if they’re cloned from you so are the babies. Ask Bruce about a doctor that you can trust.”
“I will, I promise. You’re right, I really do want the babies to be okay and with what you said about the Justice League doing their job I have a feeling my existence won’t be illegal for much longer.” Walking into the dining room just in time for the family to overhear the last of that conversation.
“Definitely not,” Bruce said firmly. “I know for a fact Martian Manhunter is absolutely furious hearing they did something like this to another sentient species just because they weren’t human.”
“You know Martian Manhunter!?” Danny said with literal stars in his eyes.
“Oh here we go,” Jazz said with fond exasperation.
“Yes?” Bruce said, he hadn’t meant it like a question but he was just surprised, and a little worried, there was no way Danny would be prejudiced right?
“Oh my god can I meet him?! He’s been my favourite hero for ever! He’s from SPACE! I love space! I want to know everything he knows about space, and about Mars! I’ve never been to space! Well I’ve flown to the moon a couple of times but I couldn’t go further and be back in time for school.”
He had started floating off the ground as he enthused about space, with fond exasperation Jazz grabbed the back of Danny’s shirt and tugged him back down into a seat at the dining room table. It was like Peter Pan with the joy lifting him up, and his excitement was both adorable and infectious. It was so good to see him happy.
While he was talking food had been being passed around, and Damian, who was sitting on Danny’s other side from Jazz, had been heaping his plate while the older boy was distracted. It was sweet to see him being… caring to another person, he was even putting some meat on Danny’s plate with an odd stubborn set to his jaw. He almost looked aggressive but that was really just his determined face. Damian had accepted Danny in record time, which was a little surprising but it also made sense, they all knew Damian really loved caring for people, and children, and with Danny carrying babies no doubt Damian was already staking his claim on the role of favoured uncle.
“I’ll see what I can do,” Bruce promised with a little smile. He was sure J’onn would be happy to meet Danny so it wouldn’t actually be hard.
“Thank you!” Danny cheered, only Jazz’s grip on his shirt keeping him from leaping back into the air.
“Eat,” Damian reminded, shoving a fork into Danny’s open hand. “Pennyworth says you were too worried to eat much at lunch and you need the nutrients!”
“Aww thank you ghostling,” Danny cooed, roughling Damian’s hair who scowled and ducked away, but didn’t lash out At All! Huh apparently pregnancy was a shield against Damian’s aggression.
Danny did start to eat though, and to keep him on track the family started talking with each other. It seemed to make him more comfortable, if things were quiet he felt the need to fill the space instead of filling his mouth. It was honestly sort of nice, even Damian shared a bit more than he usually would have about school, and about his art, then started telling Danny in particular about his animals. Danny hadn’t met them yet after all and he needed to know everything! Which ones were friendly, how to appropriately handle any of them, what treats they could have.
The way Danny lit up and started questioning Damian about his animals was honestly a little startling, but it couldn’t be more clear that he was genuinely enthusiastic and Damian was preening. Rarely did he get such an attentive listening ear when talking about his pets, especially since everyone who had been in the family for a while had heard similar rants so many times they’d started to tune them out.
It was a testament to Damian’s self control that he insisted Danny finish his dinner before dragging him away from the table to go show him all the various animals he had collected over the years. Danny laughed as Damian tugged on him and waved back at the family, joking about being kidnapped again (which, worrying) but he didn’t seem to mind.
“It’s good to see someone with such a healthy and well supported obsession,” Jazz said with a little smile, watching after her little brother and Damian rush off. “Oh!” She said, snapping her fingers, “I should explain all that for you! If you’re going to take care of Danny you’ll need a crash course in Ghosts and Liminality. I uhh, I have a powerpoint?” She said, looking embarrassed and hopeful as she pulled a USB out of her pocket.
“That sounds like a wonderful idea, Miss. I’ll set up the projector in the family room,” Alfred said as he whisked the last of the dishes away.
“Oh! Thank you Alfred. Can I help at all?” Jasmine asked, already getting up from the table so she could follow.
“Nonsense, you’re a guest and you had a very long day already. I’ll set it up, and then fix a room for you next Master Danny’s for tonight,” Alfred said briskly, shooing her back into the dining room room with the family.
She looked like she was about to argue but she thought better of it. “Alfred is really the one in charge around here and we all know it,” Dick commented to her with a little smile. “No use arguing with him, and he usually knows best anyway.”
“Well, alright if you say so,” Jazz said with a little smile and tension slowly eased from her shoulders. When was the last time she got to relax? Having to worry about her brother and no one really taking care of the, how long had she been googling “how to stitch up a wound’, ‘how to help a 14 year old with ADHD study’, and various other things to try and care for a boy only two years younger than her.
“So I know you mentioned to Nightwing that you wanted to go to Gotham U? I don’t know how your grades are,” (a lie, they knew she was a genius and her grades were excellent), “But the Wayne family sponsors many scholarships and if you don’t qualify for any of those we would be happy to just pay for your schooling. What would you like to study?” Bruce asked
“I want to study psychology!” Jazz said, lighting up instantly. “That’s what I’ve wanted to study since I was seven. I want to be a psychologist, and I’d like to intern at Arkham. I know it’s a dangerous place, but I’m tougher than I look and I have Danny on speed dial so I’ll be fine.”
Well at least she had thought about the danger, and tougher then she looked meant something because she already looked plenty touch. “Well, I know Arkham can always use good doctors,” Bruce chuckled. “Just try not to become the next Harley Quinn,” He said it like a joke but he did mean it, the last thing Gotham needed was another evil genius.
“Don’t worry, she lacked grounding connections due to her upbringing. I’ll have Danny, and his babies, and I’ll make friends outside of the hospital. As long as nothing happens to Danny I’m sure I’ll be fine, just like as long as nothing happens to me, or the other people he loves, Danny will be fine.”
It sounded like a warning, and it probably was, but they already knew that. Zatana had warned them that Danny could be dangerous. He would need grounding connections, but everyone did, and the Waynes already knew they were going to be family. On their own any of the Bat clan knew they could go off the deep end, a lot of them had even seen the futures with evil versions of themselves but with the other to care for and about, it kept them on the right track… at least mostly.

The Better, Hidden Half
Requested Here!
Pairing: Tim Bradford x fem!wife!reader (takes place in The Rookie 1x20-2x1)
Summary: Tim doesn't tell just anyone that he's married. When he's quarantined and his life is threatened by a fatal virus, he asks Lucy to call you, and ends up showing everyone what you mean to him.
Warnings: angst, fluffy comfort at the end, spoilers for episodes 1x20 and 2x1 (this is basically a rewrite, but still includes a brief reference to the suicide line from Tim). reader stress cleans?
A/N: The anxiety/stress cleaning bit is completely self-indulgent; sorry. I tried to manipulate Tim's conversations with Lucy to make them sound more platonic (I don't know if it worked though). I absolutely love this idea and had a ton of fun writing it!🤍
Word Count: 3.9k+ words
Tumblr media
Tim Bradford is a man of few words, and he keeps his life separated into two distinct areas: work life and personal life. He tried to bring the two together once, but hated the constant worry that someone from his work life would threaten to hurt people in his personal life or worse, act on their threats. For that reason, for his family’s safety, Tim keeps his life separated, and only a choice few have been chosen to be trusted with a glimpse of both sides of Tim. Angela, Wade, and on occasion, Bishop, see a side of Tim that doesn't exist when he's at work.
✯✯✯✯✯
“How is she?” Angela asks, sitting beside Tim for roll call.
Tim rolls his eyes, crossing his arms and leaning back in his chair. “I trained her, I’m sure she did fine. Better than your golden boy boot, anyway.”
Angela smiles and leans in to whisper, “Didn’t mean Chen.” She turns her attention to Jackson, calling, “80 might be the passing grade, boot, but if you don’t get at least a 90, you should turn in your badge on general principle.”
Tim leans forward to add, “Officer Chen, I will take it as a personal insult if you get anything less than a 93.”
“Yes, sir,” Lucy answers. “Have you figured out what you’re going to do with all your new free time? Might I suggest a book club?”
Angela elbows Tim under the table, and he glances at her quickly, giving her a displeased stare which only makes her work harder to hide her smile.
“What are you talking about?” Tim asks.
“You know, after I pass, there won’t be any more daily evaluations to write.”
“Whether I evaluate you daily or weekly, I will continue to judge you every minute. Understood?”
“Yes, sir.”
As Grey enters, Lucy turns to Nolan, who whispers, “I can’t believe he’s single.”
“Tell me about it,” Lucy replies, rolling her eyes. “Evaluating a wife daily would cut into his ‘man of honor’ time.”
They silence as Wade directs the TOs to only take easy calls while the rookies finish their last shift before their exams. When Tim assures that he follows direct orders, he keeps his eyes straight ahead, knowing that Angela and Bishop are ready to tease him the moment he looks in their direction.
✯✯✯✯✯
7-Adam-19, silent hold-up alarm activated at Madame Megan’s psychic shop. 2417 Vine. Code 3.
Tim and Lucy enter the back room, taking control of the situation quickly, and he dials in once again to being a cop. Not a family man or anything of the sort. Just a police officer.
As Lucy walks out, and the (fake) psychic hits on Tim, he can only think of one thing. Excusing himself from the room, with a lack of grace that is unlike him, Tim lets his mind wander for just a moment. He thinks of a promise he made, a vow he took, and then his focus is back on his new case, a missing person discovered by a phony Hollywood psychic.
✯✯✯✯✯
Miles away, you are trying to focus on work, though you find it much harder than Tim to simply push your family and your personal life from your mind at a moment’s notice. Fiddling with your necklace, you refrain from grabbing your phone, wanting to text the only person on your mind. Oblivious to the dangers Tim is learning about from the CDC and Homeland Security, you sigh and clench your hands into fists before attempting to focus again.
Before you make any progress on starting the project awaiting your attention, your phone rings. Tim’s name appears on your screen, and you rush to answer, dread filling you. He never calls while he’s working, and you immediately expect the worst. Surely if it were something terrible, Angela or Wade would call you. If Tim is calling, that means he is okay, he is alive.
“Hello?” you ask, releasing a sigh when Tim says your name.
“Are you alone?” he adds, his voice strained.
“Yes. What’s going on?”
“I need you to stay where you are or go straight home. There’s a terror cell with a biological weapon; we’re doing everything we can to find them, but I need to know you’re safe.”
“Tim- yeah, of course. Are you okay?”
“Yeah. I- I really can’t say anything else. Not about what we’re doing. Call me if you need anything. Anything at all, okay?”
“I will. Be careful, Tim. I love you.”
“I love you.”
Your phone beeps as the call ends, and your hand finds your necklace again, one finger slipping into Tim’s wedding ring. He leaves it with you each morning, taking it back with gentle touches and loving kisses when he returns each night. Today, all you can do is trust that he is good at his job and that he will protect you and the rest of LA, and then come back to you.
✯✯✯✯✯
Tim and Lucy approach one of the possible address in the search for newly discovered members of the terror cell.
“Man. And here I thought that test was gonna be the hardest part of my day,” Lucy muses.
“Best case scenario, it’s tomorrow’s problem,” Tim points out. His thoughts, however, are stuck on you, especially when Lucy asks what the worst case is.
“Took you long enough,” the man, Peter Langston, says as he opens the door. “Bag’s in here.”
“Sir, we’re here about the bus you took from Phoenix,” Tim explains.
“No kidding. I called you about the bag.”
“And what bag is that?”
“I thought it was mine on the bus. I picked it up by accident.” Tim follows Langston into a bedroom as he continues, “Noticed as soon as I got home. Called right away. Still took you guys like six hours to get here.”
“Uh, sir, we’re not here about a bag.”
“So, you don’t have mine? My computer’s in there… I went through this one for an address, and all I found was some weird science equipment.”
Tim glances back at Lucy, who calls for the task force at the mention of ‘weird science equipment.’
“Sir, did you touch anything in there?” Tim asks, pulling gloves on.
“Yeah, I cut my finger going through it looking for an address. Some kind of broken vial.”
Tim’s eyes widen and his breath catches as the man raises his bloodied finger, adding that it hasn’t stopped bleeding since it was cut. Hemorrhaging, Tim knows.
“Everything okay in there?” Lucy calls.
“Yeah. Just stay out there,” Tim demands.
The man coughs, and Tim flinches as blood lands on his neck and up onto his jaw. Looking down at the blood on the man’s shirt, Tim’s mind forgets the divide between work and personal life. He takes the initiative to lock Lucy out, slamming the door on her to keep her safe, but his true concern is you. If something happens to him, who will look out for you? Who will be your shoulder to cry on? In a moment, as the reality of the situation dawns on him, Tim thinks like a husband, and he begins to regret keeping you, his wife, hidden for so long.
“Tim, no!” Lucy yells, but she steps forward too late.
Tim is on the other side of the door, a new division created as others are dissolved.
✯✯✯✯✯
Tim finds baby wipes on a nearby changing table, wiping the blood from his skin as he lies to Langston, telling him it will be okay and distracting him with meaningless treatments to combat the “bad case of the flu the police were warned about this morning at roll call.”
Langston disappears into the bathroom in search of cold medicine, and Tim walks to the door to ask Lucy, “Everything all right out there, Chen?”
“Uh, yeah. The CDC’s on their way,” she responds. “Hey, you need to come out of there.”
“That’s not gonna happen. Got to keep this contained.”
“Tim-“
“It’s gonna be alright, boot.”
Tim knows that Lucy is concerned about him, and he is similarly concerned for her. He feels responsible for her safety as his rookie, but his thoughts toward her are completely and totally different from his fears concerning you, driven by love rather than mutual respect and duty.
“You keep your head in the game, okay?” Tim encourages Lucy. “Everything’s gonna be fine.”
As Tim looks at the blood-covered wipe in his hand, he thinks of you, and how you’ll respond to the potential notification that he didn’t make it, taken from you by the very thing he tried to protect you from. He turns his attention back to the sick man feet away from him before his thoughts spiral. Tim needs you, so he needs to focus and survive.
✯✯✯✯✯
While the CDC is arriving at the house and quarantining Tim and the infected man, you are pacing in your shared bedroom. Memories of you and Tim exist in every inch of this house, and every moment that goes by without an update increases your worry. Walking into the closet, you find one of Tim’s recently worn shirts, changing into it before picking up the remote to distract yourself. With Tim’s pillow clutched to your chest, you try to laugh at the ridiculous sitcom on the screen, but it doesn’t work as well as you hoped.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Officer Chen, you want to tell me what happened?” Dr. Morgan asks, dressed in full hazmat gear as she enters.
“Yeah, uh, the bus passenger mistakenly grabbed the wrong bag, and the virus must have been in it because he coughed up blood on Tim,” Lucy explains.
“Did you get any blood on you?”
“Uh, no. I was out here. Tim immediately closed the door.”
“Smart man.”
Tim hears Dr. Morgan’s comment and clenches his jaw, knowing you would disagree entirely. At least in this case.
“Hey, doc,” Tim greets, standing against the door.
“How you doing?” Dr. Morgan inquires.
“Fine. But Mr. Langston’s struggling a little.”
“Can you describe his condition?”
“Yeah. He, uh, started coughing blood about 20 minutes ago. Now he’s got a pretty wicked nosebleed.”
“Why aren’t they coming in? Where’s my ambulance?” Langston asks.
“It’ll be here any minute. Just… stay put. Save your energy.”
Lucy interrupts to ask, “Where’s the vaccine?”
“Still in the air,” Dr. Morgan says. “Should land in the next hour or so.”
Scoffing, Lucy argues, “You can’t make Tim wait in there. He might not be infected.”
“Sorry. Quarantine rules exist for a reason.” Dr. Morgan turns to the door and asks Tim, “Officer Bradford, do you mind if I put you to work while you wait?”
“You want to know what’s in the bag?” Tim knows digging through the contents is dangerous, but waiting without doing anything won’t increase his chances of getting home to you.
“Yes, I do.”
“Copy that. Chen, I’m gonna turn on my body cam. You can monitor it from out there.”
“Okay. Please be careful,” she responds.
Tim hears your voice in his mind, telling him the same thing. He trusts himself to listen to you more than his rookie.
“All right. Here we go,” Tim says, using his baton to open the bag.
“Wait. Wait. What is that bottle?” Dr. Morgan wonders.
“Looks like the delivery device,” Tim guesses, raising it carefully from the bag. “It’s a misting fan.”
Dr. Morgan calls Homeland Security with the new information on how the terrorists are planning to spread the virus. As Tim continues searching the bag, failing to find identification or target information, Lucy sees Langston raising a chair in the mirror and yells for Tim just before he is knocked unconscious.
✯✯✯✯✯
Your house is as clean as it has ever been. Using your nervous energy and anxiety-fueled need to move, you clean each room in an attempt to keep your mind from worrying about Tim. You could call someone and ask for an update, but they probably can’t tell you anything. The only comfort you have is knowing that Angela and Wade would call you if you needed to know something. The silence is deafening, but it’s also a good sign.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Tim? Tim!” Lucy continues, growing concerned at the lack of reply.
Tim opens his eyes, moving backward quickly when he sees a puddle of blood running toward his face. He sees Langston standing across the room, mumbling about needing to get out as he tries to break the window. Tim tases him as he stands, and Lucy’s concerned yells continue. Covering his face with his shirt, Tim handcuffs Langston to the bed, shuffling backward as Lucy demands his answer.
“I’m okay! I’m okay!” he replies, breathing heavily. “Well, that was fun.”
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
Tim chuckles. “Kind of depends on your definition of the word.”
While Lucy tells Dr. Morgan to get the vaccine, and the LAPD sends patrol units out to find the other terrorist, Tim keeps his eyes on Langston, but his mind is on you. He should ask someone to tell you and find a way to let you know what is going on, but part of him knows that you are separate from this for a reason. You’re likely worried enough without knowing that Tim’s chance of being infected rises with each moment.
✯✯✯✯✯
Tim watches Langston die, unable to do anything as he begs for help and convulses. Imagining himself in Langston’s place, Tim decides that he has to do something. He can’t go out like that, he won’t, but more importantly, he can’t leave you wondering. If Tim dies today, he is not dying without talking to you one last time, showing everyone around him that you are the best part of him.
He leans against the door in silence until Lucy says, “Hey, I, uh- I just checked with Dr. Morgan. The vaccine’s minutes away.”
“You know, you’re good at a lot of things – lying isn’t one of them,” Tim replies.
“You think I’m good at things? Can I get that in writing? … How are you doing? Are there any symptoms yet?"
"I’m sweating like a pig. But it’s probably because it’s 100 degrees in this room.”
Tim sighs just before Lucy assures, “It’s gonna be okay. I really believe that.”
“I’m sure you do. But if it isn’t-“
“Don’t think like that. It’s-“
“If it isn’t,” Tim repeats. “I’m not going out the way my man Pete here just did.”
“What are you saying?”
Tim sighs again, realizing what he said. He would never leave you like that; he’s a fighter. “I need you to do something for me, Chen.”
“Anything.”
“My- my wife is probably worrying herself sick right now. If this doesn’t end like you think it will, can you tell her that I fought to get home to her? Just- just keep an eye on her if anything happens. Wade and Angela, too.”
“Wife?” Lucy asks softly.
Tim smiles, glad to talk about something other than himself or the virus released in the room with him.
“Yeah. We eloped a while back; Grey, Lopez, and Bishop were there.”
“You’ve never mentioned her.”
“I keep her separated. She - everything in my personal life – would be at risk if there wasn’t a divide there.”
“I get that. What’s she like?”
Tim says your name, closing his eyes and picturing you as he tells Lucy how beautiful, kind, and loving you are. “She’s my better half. I don’t- can’t imagine not going home to her.”
“I promise, Tim. I’m confident you will go home to her, but… I promise.”
“Thank you,” Tim says quietly.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Please tell me that’s the vaccine,” Lucy says when Dr. Morgan returns.
“It is,” she answers quickly, walking toward the door quarantining Tim. “Stand back, Officer Chen. You’re not wearing protective gear.”
“Yeah.” Lucy steps back, hoping Tim is okay, and that he gets to go home to you.
“Officer Bradford, it’s time to let me in,” Dr. Morgan calls.
Tim opens the door, greeting Dr. Morgan before answering that he’s not feeling too bad. She tells him that she’s going to administer the vaccine. “It’s experimental, right?” Tim asks.
“That’s correct. So, we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens. Maybe nothing. Maybe you grow horns. But for now, I’d say you might’ve dodged a bullet.”
Tim looks at Lucy to ask, “Can you get Lopez? Ask her to call for me?”
Lucy nods, pulling her radio out to contact Angela. She knows that Tim will need you, no matter how the vaccine works… or doesn’t.
“Lopez,” she says, sighing before saying, “Tim wants to know if you can call his wife.”
“Of course,” Angela answers. “She’ll be at his side, even if I have to go get her in the shop.”
Lucy smiles at Tim, and he sighs as Dr. Morgan administers the vaccine. There’s more hope surrounding Tim now, but the fight may not be over yet.
✯✯✯✯✯
When you see Angela’s name on your phone, you consider not answering. Biting your bottom lip to hold your tears in, you answer.
“He’s okay,” Angela begins.
You sigh in relief, a few tears breaking free anyway. “Thank you, Angela.”
“The vaccine is experimental, so they’re taking him to the CDC for observation; you can visit with the proper protective gear. Do you want me to come pick you up?”
“I’ll meet you there.”
“See you in a few. And, just so you know, he didn’t call me.”
“Who did?”
“His rookie.”
Angela reminds you that she’s happy to pick you up if you want before ending the call. Tim mentioned me, you think. Then you wonder whether or not that’s a good thing.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Hey, I heard you guys saved the day,” Lucy says, exiting Langston’s house to meet Nolan, Jackson, Lopez, and Bishop.
“It was a group effort,” Jackson corrects.
“Glad you’re okay,” Nolan expresses.
“Me too,” Lucy sighs. “I- I mean that you’re okay, too.”
“How’s Tim?” Angela asks.
“I think he’s gonna be all right. Now, 24-hour observation at the CDC.”
“I’ll bet my pension he just told doctors Tim Bradford does not ride in a wheelchair,” Angela jokes as Tim walks out.
“Only way I’m leavin’ out of here is on my own two feet,” Bishop imitates.
“Don’t you guys have paperwork to finish?” Tim retorts.
Tim looks at Lucy, nodding his thanks before continuing to walk toward the car waiting to transport him to the CDC. He stops suddenly in the yard, growing dizzy before he falls backward onto the grass.
“Officer Bradford!” Dr. Morgan yells.
Lucy, Angela, Bishop, and Jackson run toward him before the CDC holds them back. Someone calls for an ambulance, and Angela backs away to make a call.
✯✯✯✯✯
“What happened?” you ask, answering Angela’s second call.
“Meet us at Shaw instead of the CDC,” she says.
You can hear yelling in the background, and repeat, “What happened?”
Angela says your name, unyielding as she says, “Shaw. I’ll meet you there.”
You inhale deeply, turning toward Shaw. Knowing that you have no chance of beating an ambulance escorted by police cars, you grip the steering wheel, hoping that Los Angeles traffic has grace on you, and you make it to Tim’s side quickly.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Tim better make it,” Jackson says.
“He will.” Angela knows that he’s a fighter, but she also knows that losing him will destroy you. He has to make it for himself, for the police department, and most importantly, for you.
In the ambulance ahead, Tim goes into anaphylactic shock. Lucy helps the paramedics and glances at Tim’s left hand. The line where his wedding ring sits is barely visible, but she whispers for him to keep his promise, to keep fighting.
Once the ambulance and the police cars enter into the hospital parking lot, Nolan notices a woman with a gun, alerting the officers surrounding the ambulance before the firefight starts.
Lucy covers Tim in the ambulance as the paramedics assist him as well as the injured medics. Nolan shoots the woman in the shoulder, but his gun jams as he moves closer to her.
Tim opens the ambulance door, downing the armed woman on a surge of adrenaline. Stepping onto the ambulance driveway, he asks Nolan if he’s okay.
“I should have reloaded on the move,” Nolan mutters. “You?”
“I should’ve taken yesterday off,” Tim answers.
“Alright, Officer Bradford, let’s go,” a nurse says, pushing a wheelchair to his side.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Angela!” you call, jogging to her side.
“Don’t freak out,” she begins, but your eyes widen when you see the bullet holes covering, well, everything.
“Where is he?”
She nods, leading you around her shop. Tim is standing beside Nolan, arguing with a nurse.
“I can walk. Clearly, I’m fine,” Tim argues.
You don’t think about how many people are watching as you walk to Tim’s side. He turns toward you, his eyes softening when he sees you.
“Get in the wheelchair,” you demand.
Tim sighs but does as you say. Nolan and Jackson look at each other in shock, and Lucy smiles as she says, “His wife.”
✯✯✯✯✯
When you walk into Tim’s hospital room, he looks like he’s been waiting for you.
“I’m sorry,” he begins.
“For what? Not listening to the nurse?”
Tim chuckles as he raises his left hand, pulling you to his side. “No. I’m sorry for not showing you off more, for never telling people about us. I worried you; I know I did, and you don’t deserve any of it.”
You lean forward, running your fingers across Tim’s jawline as you smile. “You don’t have to show me off. I know why you do it, Tim. Being a secret, being separated and safe, I get it. What I don’t like is not knowing if you’re okay.”
“I don’t want the separation anymore. You are my entire life, and- I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but I’m not risking this again. The idea of not making it home, leaving you alone, with no one knowing you or how much you mean to me… that was terrible, and I’m sorry.”
Pursing your lips, you lean toward Tim and look into his eyes before scanning your eyes over his face.
“What are you doing?” he asks.
“Trying to figure out where the Tim I know went.”
Tim smiles, moving over in the bed and tugging you against his side. He taps your necklace before raising your hair away from your neck. You unclasp your necklace, sliding Tim’s wedding ring off the chain. Tim lays his left hand in your lap, and you put his ring on slowly before kissing his hand.
“I love you,” Tim says.
“I love you. And I accept your apology, even though I didn’t need it.”
“Ready to meet the rest of my-“
“Friends?” you fill in, smiling.
“Colleagues,” Tim finishes, shaking his head as his arm tightens around your waist.
“Thank you for making sure Angela called me.”
“How clean is the house?”
You laugh, pressing your face against Tim’s shoulder. He knows you well, and though you didn't know what was truly at stake over the last few hours, you did miss him.
“Hey, Mrs. Bradford,” Wade greets, smiling as he leads a small crowd of officers into the room. “I have some rookies here who don’t believe someone would marry Tim.”
“I changed my mind,” Tim replies. “Get out.”
You elbow him gently, smiling as you stand. “It's much easier when he doesn’t tell people. No association to him.”
Tim laughs behind you, and after shaking hands and introducing yourself, you return to Tim’s side: where nothing can hurt you, everything is safe, and you’re the most important thing in the world.

They All Know Now
That Batfam finds out Damian has a gf, but not from Damian
A/N: just randomly had this idea. Mostly a group chat between the Batfam reacting the finding out Damian has a boo thang
Enjoy 😊
Word Count: 850+
Warning: Cursing, Dick being a drama queen, Tim doubting Damian’s rizz
Damian hadn’t expected for people to find out, especially not like this
Why can’t people just mind their own business
This whole thing was stupid
You and Damian went out to this small fair just outside of Gotham for a date
You thought it would be unnecessary to wear disguises
You wanted a normal date without disguises and paparazzi
But you were wrong
You guys were having a nice time, walking and holding hands, sharing some cotton candy
Unfortunately, someone from Gotham Academy was there too
They took a picture and somehow media outlets got it
It was going viral
The headlines ranged from “Damian Wanye Mystery Girl” to “Who is this girl? Lover or Gold Digger”
A few months ago, you and Damian got matching promise ring
One news outlet mistook them for wedding rings
“Nothing like his billionaire father, Damian Wayne is locked in”
When you showed Damian the headlines
You found them hilarious
Damian didn’t
Not even 10 minutes after you showed him the first headline the ‘BatChat’ group chat
Made by none other than Dick Grayson
BATCHAT 🦇
GRAYSON: Attachment: 5 images 2 videos
                   WHAT IS THIS?
                   DAMIAANNNNN!!!!!
DAMIAN : What do you want?
                 I’m busy.
CASS : Are you with Y/N?
DAMIAN : Yes.
GRAYSON : Is that why you’ve been disappearing lately??
TODD : Wow….
            The demon spawn got a girlfriend
            I thought Raven was going to be the one and only
DRAKE : Wait…
  Damian really has a girlfriend???
DUKE : Haven’t you been keeping up
DRAKE : No really…
I’m busy ok
STEPH : Are we going to ignore the fact that Cass knew and didn’t tell us
GRAYSON : Yea Cass
                    Why didn’t you tell us???
CASS : Not my secret to tell
DAMIAN : That's why she was allowed to know
CASS : Bruce knew too
GRAYSON : I feel betrayed
                    Why didn’t you tell me?
                   🥲.
DUKE : I wonder why
            🙄.
GRAYSON : Don't sass me rn Duke
DAMIAN : Cass, Y/N wants to know if you’re going on patrol on Friday.
TODD : SHE KNOWS?!!?!?!
            Does Bruce know she knows?
GRAYSON : OF COURSE HE KNOWS
                 Its Bruce
CASS : I’m not.
            Why?
DAMIAN : She says “we need to finish the movie from our sleepover”
STEPH : YOU TWO HAD A SLEEPOVER WITHOUT ME
DUKE : What was the movie?
TODD : Really Duke?
           That’s what you want to know
DUKE : Yes… leave me alone
DAMIAN : I don’t know.
DUKE : Can you ask please 🙏🏾
DAMIAN : She said they finished Salt, with Angelina Jolie and are now on Mr and Mrs Smith
CASS : Ask her if we’re going to watch Megan Fox movies after.
DUKE : Angelina Jolie…
        Megan fox…
        Can I PLEASE join 🙏🏾 🙏🏾 🙏🏾
DAMIAN : I’m not a walkie-talkie.
           Text her yourself.
DUKE : Fine
         I don’t have her number
CASS : …
DAMIAN : I was talking to Cass
STEPH : Uhm….
              What about me?!?!?!
GRAYSON: Steph plz
                   Damian has been ignoring me this entire time
                  😢.
                  Can we meet her????
DAMIAN : No.
CASS: Y/N says she would love to meet you but only if “Dami” is comfortable with it
GRAYSON : SHE GETS TO GIVE YOU A NICKNAME BUT NOT ME
                     Everytime I try to give you one you reject it
DRAKE : Dami?
               Who’s Dami
TODD : Damian
             Duhhh
DRAKE : I'm running of 2 hours of sleep and 8 cups of coffee
              🖕🏾.
TODD : 😂
Suddenly everyone got an incoming call
--Incoming Facetime Call: Damian--
Once everyone joined the group facetime they all noticed a girl sitting next to Damian
They couldn’t lie
You were gorgeous
You looked like the girl that wasn’t overly popular but everyone liked
Basically a Disney princess
But you didn’t look like Damian’s usual type
Raven or his past fling, Flatline
You were probably the reason he slowly started incorporating color in his wardrobe
I mean it was just dark colors but it was colors nonetheless
You finally spoke up and the conversation rolled on from there
Y/N : Hi everyone! I’m Y/N!
         It's so nice to meet the rest of you.
Grayson : Hi! Im Dick. Damian’s handsome oldest brother.
TODD : I’m Jason Todd. The cooler, even more handsome big bro.
DRAKE : Uh hi. Tim.
Everyone else started to introduce themselves
DAMIAN: Hurry up and ask what you need, we’re extremely busy.
Y/N : Damian, be nice. Feel free to ask me anything
After a brief moment of silence they all started talking at one
“See what I mean” Damian whispered in your ear
You rolled your eyes at him and spoke up
Y/N : One question at a time please
DRAKE : Is Damian paying you to act like his girlfriend? Did he have to bribe you?
For the next hour, you were answering questions and they were getting to know you
They like how you balanced Damian out
You chilled him out
Normally Damian would have been tearing their heads off, but you were calmed him before he could even react
They like seeing Damian happy
He was calmer at home
Even smiling
Actually it was a small lip smirk but they counted it
Damian was happy
Especially with you
They could tell by the way he would look at you when you talked
With so much love
I had this for a while but I finally posted it. When I pasted it from my google docs I was shocked cuz all the colors and formatting was basically gone and I had to redo them. Sadly they didn’t have the colors i wanted so Cass Duke and Tim are normal but I might give Tim orange or something 🤷🏾‍♀️

ADDICTED TO YOU
feat. nagi seishiro x gn! reader
prompt: “oh stop pouting, i’m coming." (from here!)
notes: missing my favorite boy lately ;-; also a short drabble because im still busy with studying for exams sobs
Tumblr media
"can you come over?" nagi asks through the phone, laying his head on his hands. "i miss you."
"what?" you let out a small laugh. "i just got home from our date and you miss me already?"
nagi pouts. "not my fault you're so cuddly. i just wanna spend the whole day with you."
looking at the time, it has only been thirty minutes since you've arrived home. "can't you wait until tomorrow? i've got lots of homework to do tonight," the pout on nagi's face did not leave, which made you sigh. "oh stop pouting, i'm coming."
before you hung up the phone, you heard nagi mumble, "see you soon, love you." which makes you shake your head with a small smile on your face.
you were thankful that you and nag didn't live too far apart, so you can walk there instead of taking the bus. as soon as you arrived at his apartment complex, you took the elevator, pressing the number 5.
nagi was probably waiting for you on his bed, and you know that once you knocked on his door, he would tell you to just come in, not bothering to get up.
true to what you had imagined, when you opened the door, you can hear nagi say, "come in." when you opened the door, however, nagi was running to you and immediately hugs you, almost making you fall to the ground.
"nagi-! hey, come on! i wasn't gone for that long!" you exclaimed, balancing your foot.
"missed you," he mumbled, hiding his face in the crook of your neck. "wanted to cuddle with you."
you laughed, softly patting his head. "you're such a baby, did you know that?"
"mm, reo tells me that almost everyday," he replies. nagi notices your laptop bag and immediately frowns. "why'd you bring your laptop with you?"
you raised your eyebrows. "i have work to do, remember? since i'm here, might as well do my work here rather than postponing it to tomorrow."
"but i thought you wanted to cuddle?"
"you're the one that wanted me to come over, sei. the downside of having me here is i'm going to be busy working." you give him a big smile, innocently patting his head as well.
"that's so unfair," he whines, letting go of you. with that, he grabs your laptop bag and places it on the highest place in his room. "there, now you can't do your work."
you gaped. "nagi?! come on, seriously? i really need to do it today! i can't afford turning it late anymore because i will forget to do it tomorrow." you tried reaching for it but as expected, you can't.
"'s fine, just ask reo for the answer." he says so casually which made you sigh, thinking that you actually don't have any other choice but to comply.
"ugh, fine. but you better ask reo for me or else i will never forgive you and no cuddles for a week, got it?" you glared at him harshly but nagi doesn't give you any reaction, only nodding.
he pulls you to his bed, dropping down and immediately hugs you. "mm, this is better than hugging my pillow. you're so comfy."
you suppressed a laugh. "am i really?"
you feel him nod on your back, hugging you even tighter than before. "yes, really."
"hm, well thank you, i guess." you replied, laughing a little at how silly this conversation is. nagi's eyes were closed when you look up, and you can tell he's sleepy.
"you sleepy?" you asked softly.
nagi opens his eyes and nods. "mm, yeah. you're comfy and i'm really tired from today."
"you can sleep, it's okay. i'll be here when you wake up, promise." you say, and nagi smiles at you, closing his eyes as he rests his head on your chest.
"okay... goodnight." nagi replies sleepily.
"goodnight, sei." you say it back, kissing the top of his head and soon you fell asleep as well, resting your head on top of his.

Welcome esteemed guests to chapter four of my still unnamed fanfic! Please place your suggestions on a name in the comments if you feel so inclined. :)
Bruce massaged the bridge of his nose as he turned on the coms, hopefully one of his family members would have one in right now.
“Team, Constantine will be here in five to visit our guest. Either be in gear and in the bat cave or make yourselves scarce.”
“Understood Father.”
“Why is Constantine coming here?”
“You got it, b!”
Bruce did his best to answer Tim’s question as he surveyed the confiscated items from the self proclaimed guys in white, eyeing the vials of bright green liquid he had yet to finish analyzing.
“The infinite realms sounded familiar to me so I posed some inquiries about it to Constantine. This apparently set off the alarms for him as I attempted to elaborate. Now he’s on his way.”
Bruce made no efforts to hide his exasperation as he headed towards the zeta tube entrance of the bat cave.
Jason sat in a large ornate chair vigilantly as the boy he was tasked to watch slept in the plush guest bed. He looked no older then seven. Who could hurt such a small kid? The thought made Jason sick.
Dick entered the room after knocking gently. “Hey little wing, did you hear Bruce earlier? Constantine is really gunning it over here. We need to either get lost or put on our dominos at least.”
Jason scoffed at the cutesy nickname and made a move to get up until Danny stirred in his sleep. Jason stopped in his tracks.
“Can’t” Jason uttered
“What?” Dick said inquisitively
“Can’t leave him.”
Jason really couldn’t. It was like he was glued to the chair at the bedside of this kid.
Dick looked with concern at his younger brother. “I see… how about this! I will go get your gear and keep an eye on him while you change in the en-suite. That way you aren’t far!”
Jason squinted his eyes at the proposition.
“Jason, I promise Danny is safe here. You don’t have to worry.”
It ended up working out perfectly.
“Hey Disco boy”
“hm?”
“I don’t know what came over me, thanks for not giving me a hard time.”
“Aww you’re welcome mama bird!”
Jason met this teasing with a myriad of expletives that were whisper-yelled at his brother.
“Try not to be a helicopter parent!” Dick laughed as he retreated from the room.
Danny stirred once again as his eyes flitted open. He sat up groggily and surveyed his surroundings. Jason could tell panic was seeping into his veins as he saw his unfamiliar environment.
“Hey, it’s okay”
Danny’s head snapped towards the source of the voice.
“You’re safe” Jason continued “ someone named CW sent you here to heal”
Jason’s soothings seemed to reach him as he relaxed and rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
“Where is he?!? Bats,this could be the catalyst of an inter dimensional war! A war against a people who’s base power set is comparable to Martian Manhunter do you understand?”
“Constantine”
“This literal child usurped Pariah Dark Batman.”
Batman blinked as that name held no weight for him.
“Pariah Dark was a ruler so cruel and powerful that he was banished by his own subjects. The only way for power to change hands is via single combat but no one could do it.”
“Constantine?”
“Until the new king broke him out of his sarcophagus and promptly handed his ass to him! Rumors are that he’s not even full grown yet!”
“Constantine!”
The magic user paused, snapped out of his hasty exposition.
“The boy is still resting and hasn’t woken up yet. In the letter we received we were told that this is the safest place for him to recover. I’m sure that whoever is in charge is doing everything they can to keep the child safe.”
Just as Batman was about to continue to explain how he managed to get in this situation Jason exited the elevator to the bat cave.
“Yes I promise he’s nice. No, he dresses like a bat to scare bad guys.”
Danny who was holding tightly to Jason’s continued to rattle out questions.
“Who is that?” Danny asked as he pointed towards Constantine who looked thoroughly confused.
“This tiny tyke is the Ghost King? Oh come on you’re pulling my leg or something spooks.”
Constantine then addressed the boy
“You defeated Pariah Dark single handedly?”
Danny replied to his questioning with a crinkled look of confusion.
“… Ghost King? …Pariah Dark?”
Realization dawned on Constantine.
“Was he reduced to his core?”
Jason replied with another question.
“Is that why he looked like a fancy rock?”
A beat of silence filled the room.
“I can’t help you with this. Let me know when he remembers enough for me to grovel for the sake of this dimension.”
Constantine made his way towards the zeta tube and swiftly left.
Danny blinked a few times, processing the strange man and his strange questions before letting go of Jason’s hand.
“Where are you headed kid?”
“I’m thirsty.”
“There’s not much in terms of refreshments down here how about we- hey woah don’t drink that!”
It was far too late Danny had phased his hand through the container holding several large ampules of a glowing green liquid. He snapped off the top at the scored break point and began to drink it.
“Danny! Danny spit that out right now!” Jason hurriedly approached.
“Why? It’s good! See?”
Before Jason could protest Danny offered some of his drink to Jason.
Despite his best efforts he smelled some of the unidentified liquid. It smelled … really good. Before he himself or Bruce could stop him, he took a small sip. It was sweet, citrusy and effervescent. He took another sip before finishing the whole thing. It lessened a headache he forgot he had.
“Heeeey! That was mine!”
Jason regarded the boy who looked at him with intense betrayal.
He reached into the containment unit and uncorked another ampule with some effort and handed it to him absently, still confused as to what just happened.
This is the second time this week Bruce has been genuinely shocked by something. He did not like this feeling at all. He looked forlornly at his samples that had just been raided like a fridge. He let out a long sigh.

Things I want in one fic:
Redeemed Vlad, Good Fenton Parents, Fentons/Vlad polycule
Liminal Amity Park
Redeemed Dark Danny, weird cousin?
Ellie as part of the family, sorta step sibling?
Defect quartet
The Class as a team deferring to Team Phantom
Jazz is Big Sister
Amity Park knows the secret
The Class moving to Gotham for college
Vlad giving them enough money to purchase Drake Manor
Tim has closed off the tunnel between the Manor and the Batcave
Tim was the one to hand the keys over to Danny, whose name was on the deed, courtesy of his new step-dad
They end up keeping in touch and Tim is a frequent visitor at the manor and befriends the majority of the Class
They all still keep up with their training, Sam and Valerie put together an obstacle course with the help of the jocks and every Saturday is a free-for-all battle royale with ecto guns set to their lowest setting across all of the grounds.
The last one standing gets to pick what restaurant dinner is from that night and the movie for movie night.
Tim does find all of this rather unusual, but mostly he finds that they remind him of all his hero friends.
This, more than anything else they do, makes him very concerned.
Why do these random midwesterners train like heroes? Why do they have a camaraderie he’s only seen forged on the same battlefield? He’s noticed they mostly defer to a group of five individuals. The pair of siblings who now own the Manor and the partners of one of said siblings. More than that, they all defer to Danny, the one he gave the keys to.
Luckily for him, Two Face happened to attack the bank that Danny was at and Danny did something he’d only ever seen Bruce manage to do and talked the villain down from the attack.
When asked, Dent just said that he saw a kinship in the kid, said he’d understood duality in a way that resonated with him.
Later that night Red Robin reopened the tunnels and paid one Daniel Fenton a visit. Tim found him in his father’s old study, using a brand new telescope through the window. He knocked and waited before entering.
“Ah, I expected one of you to show up. It’s why I decided to stay up tonight actually. We have a lot to talk about if you’ll take a seat? I’ll get us some energy drinks. You’ll be able to confirm they’re sealed and not poisoned that way. What’s your favorite flavor? Between the fifteen of us we’ve got to have the right flavor.”
Red Robin stood there for a moment, processing before following the man to his pantry. Once there he opened a new package of his favorite energy drink and opened it himself; not once did Danny make a fuss about him opening a whole new package. He grabbed a second one to bring with him back to the office. Danny grabbed a couple himself.
Once back in the office, they sat in two chairs across from each other. Danny leaned on his elbows with his fingers steepled. “What I am about to tell you is an incredible risk to everyone in this house, and likely yourself included. I need you to promise me to listen to everything I tell you before you start asking questions. I will answer them to the best of my ability after I have gone over the basics. What I am about to tell you is going to sound unbelievable, but I’m banking on the fact that you have likely frequently experienced impossible things and therefore may take me seriously.” Danny stared at the mask. “Now, what do you know about ghosts?”
Tim’s hair trigger was of disbelief, but then he paused and considered. Clark’s an alien, Diana’s a god, Conner’s a clone, at least half the family has come back to life. Why couldn’t ghosts exist? “Not much besides fairy tales.” He braced himself for what was to come.
Danny narrowed his eyes appraisingly. “Hmm. Well. They are, in fact, real. I’ll show evidence in a little bit. A Ghost as we know them is generally formed when a person’s emotions during death produce enough ectoplasm to give their sentience form. They then become residents of a place known by two names; the Ghost Zone, or the Infinite Realms. The Ghost Zone is what it’s known as on Earth, and the residents of the place itself call it the Infinite Realms.” Danny pauses here for a moment and then claps his hands. “Now, all ghosts are members of the Infinite Realms, but not all beings of the Infinite Realms are ghosts. The Realms is a dimension mirroring our own that is entirely made of ectoplasm. It’s where the residue from the emotions of all beings in our universe go and then are given form. There are beings there that are basically gods and are aspects given form. I can go on and on about the Realms later. What’s important is that throughout history there have been unstable naturally occurring portals between the two dimensions, but around five years ago, a pair of scientists managed to open a stable portal to this dimension. A few months later, a former college friend of theirs made a second stable portal, but I’ll get to him in a minute. Once this portal was established, it made it so that ghosts could now freely come into our world. A young hero took up protecting the city, but his first few attempts had quite a bit of misunderstanding to them and so he was villainized for a while. This resulted in the government establishing an agency to combat these threats. All well and good, right?” He raised an eyebrow at Tim. “You would think so. However, the laws passed to make this agency had some clauses that are questionable. I’ll just hand you a copy of the documentation so that you can read it.”
He handed Tim a folder labeled “Anti-Ecto Acts”. He began to peruse them and came upon the clause that declared any being that can process or contains ectoplasm is considered non-sentient or sapient and called for the capture, eradication, or experimentation of all such “ecto-beings”. “This, can’t be right. This is a blatant contradiction to the Meta Protection Acts.”
Danny smirked a sad smile. “You’d think, right?” He gave him a moment to process that. “You can read up more on that later. I have other things to say.” Tim set aside the folder and took a deep chug of his energy drink.
“Alright, hit me.” he said as he leaned forward to put his elbows on his knees, giving Danny his full attention.
“Kay, so, you notice the ‘any being that can process ectoplasm’ bit? Yeah, well that can apply to some humans too. Humans that are considered death-touched or Liminal. People who have been surrounded by death, have died even if momentarily on the operating table, but especially people who have been exposed to high levels of ectoplasm. Here’s the thing about living in a town with a stable portal to effectively the afterlife: it kinda does some stuff to you.” He flashed his eyes a Lazerus green as he set his right palm on the desk. He’s quiet for a moment before he leaned back with a sigh, then closed his eyes so they returned to their normal blue.
“Every individual in my hometown is ecto-contaminated.” He said quietly, like, Tim supposes, he was telling a secret. Tim guesses he was. “Every person there is death-touched. Every person there is Liminal. Every person pings as an ecto-entity to the GIW. We’re all at risk. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the heroes would ping too. I need your help.” Danny turned begging eyes upon Red Robin. “I need your help, and you need this too because I noticed it when we first met, Tim, that you are too.”
Tim reeled, he stood and knocked his chair over. “Wh-what do you mean?”
“How many times have you been near-death? How many times have you been around the dying? That sort of stuff leaves a mark on people. They begin to metabolize ectoplasm. I reckon that the majority of the Justice League apply. I’d argue that soldiers who have seen active combat would register on some sensors. According to those laws, you can be captured and experimented on. They’re luckily focusing on ghosts and have been ignoring people, but it’s only a matter of time. I need you to bring this to Batman, to the League. I need these Acts removed. They call for the eradication of my People” His eyes flashed a green again as the word resonated. “This calls for the eradication of an entire dimension, they’ve already tried it once, and if they had, it would have torn this universe apart. Luckily the nuke they had was a dud.”
Tim swallowed at that. “Nuke? They tried to nuke an entire dimension?” Tim picked up the chair and sat heavily in it. “I’m going to guess that this somehow gets worse?”
Danny nodded solemnly. “You see, the Infinite Realms has a council and a king. A good majority of the council rightfully believes that these Acts are calling for the genocide of our people. The king has kept them at bay for now, but they’re calling for war.”
Tim put his head in his hands and groaned. “And the king?” Danny looked at him, debating something for a moment. Then he stood and there was a flash of bright light. Stood in front of Red Robin could only be the King. Danny now had bright white hair and eyes that glowed with a familiar Lazarus green. He wore a cloak of stars and his crown looked like the Northern Lights. He wore armor that seemed to be a combination of the ancient Norse and Greeks. “I just want my people safe.”

Hey could you write batfam x male reader who is Jason's secret brother? Like batfam as in Bruce, dick, Jason, Tim and Damian, and like after Jason's death and resurrection they finally figure out that Jason had an older brother? Jason hardly remebers him because 1. He died and his memories are a bit fuzzy and 2. He was very young when he last saw his brother. I feel like the male reader took care of Jason, but at some point to try and give Jason a better life he left for sile shady work that promised a good amount of money, that would help Jason stay afloat? And after the batfam find out they obviously try to find him, and Bruce obviously tries to adopt him (even if he's an adult) so he can be reunited with his brother
yes yes yesssss. I was just going to write headcanons but I ended up with too many ideas so have a mini fic! I don't have the best grasp on the whole resurrection part coz I haven't read under the red so that'll be a bit vague. I'm so sorry this took so long. I got crazy writers block but here it is. Tell me if you want more of them or like headcanons because I'm lowkey obsessed with Jason having an older brother.
—————————————————————————
"Hey Bruce, why isn't Jason the first Todd that comes up when you look up Todd death report?" Dick asked as he walked into the Batcave and sat down on the table behind Bruce.
Bruce turned to look at him and raised an eyebrow. He had no idea what his son was talking about as he'd never looked up the reports. He knew his son had died and he hadn't wanted to know anything more. He'd failed his son, and he didn't want to be reminded of it.
"He's the only Todd I'm aware of," Bruce turned his chair around and looked at his eldest son, "Jason doesn't have any relatives."
Dick turned his laptop around and right at the top of the report, it said Y/N Todd. The cause of death just said explosion and body not found.
"Does that sound suspicious to you as well, Bruce?" Dick asked as he leaned forwards slightly.
"Go ask Tim to look more into it," Bruce turned his chair back around, "and don't tell Jason. We've only just got him to stay so there's no need to spook him."
Dick nodded and then walked out of the Batcave.
                                                        ~~~~~~~~~
A few days had passed, and Dick hadn’t brought it up to Bruce again. He had gone and asked Tim though and sworn him to secrecy. He didn’t talk to Jason much, so it wasn’t that hard anyways.
Jason was sitting in the library when Dick came in and seemed to be second guessing himself.
“You don’t read,” Jason said bluntly without looking up from his copy of Pride and Prejudice.
“I totally read,” Dick stumbled through the sentence as he walked over and sat down on an armchair opposite from Jason, “What are you reading anyways?”
Jason looked up at him, confused. What the fuck is Dick on, was all he was thinking. Dick was being nice, and he was normally nice, but this was awkward. This was like the same level of awkward he’d been for the first few days that Jason had been living at Wayne Manor. He had been so confident but also such a nervous wreck.
“Pride and Prejudice. Did you get sprayed with some drug on patrol?” Jason asked as he looked his older brother up and down.
“Nope nopity nope. I just wanted to hang out with you,” Dick said as though that explained why he was more skittish than a newborn kitten.
Jason nodded and then went back to reading. “I don’t remember him that much,” he said offhandedly as Dick went to stand up.
“How did you-” Dick said as he swung around and almost tripped over his feet.
“Tim talks a lot when he’s tired and you’re holding a coffee that he so desperately wants,” Jason replied with a shrug.
Dick’s jaw dropped. “You’re not mad that I’m snooping in your business? When you were little, I touched one of your first edition books and you cried for days.”
Jason’s head turned to look at Dick in two seconds flat. “I what?”
Dick’s eyebrow raised as he stared blankly at his little brother. “You don’t remember?”
The two of them stood silently as they processed what had been said. Jason hadn’t thought he’d lost that much. Dick hadn’t realized that either. He hadn’t realized Jason had lost anything. They didn’t talk much. Talking hurts and they’re both fragile which is seeming to be a trend in this family. (Bruce pay for therapy challenge???)
They stayed in silence for a few minutes before the door opened again and Damian walked in.
“Tim snitched. Your brother worked for some gang guy in Star City until he somehow quit. He’s back in Gotham for the next two weeks staying with,” Damian looked down at his phone and raised an eyebrow, “Selina?”
“How does Tim still keep his identity secret? Wait, so like dads on-off girlfriend, Selina?” Dick asked as he looked at their youngest brother with his eyebrows raised.
“Do we know any other Selinas, big bird?” Jason asked as his head swivelled to look in Dicks direction again.
Dick shrugged and seemed to be thinking. “So, we could just call Selina and ask about your mysterious brother?” He said observantly.
Damian sighed in frustration. “Yes, lets just call up Selina and ask her if she’s hosting Jason’s supposed to be dead brother!”
“It’s a good idea,” Dick tried to protest as he looked to Jason for backup. Jason raised his hands as if to say nope don’t involve me.
“No, it’s not. It’s really surprising that you’re not father’s actual son. You’re both stupid,” Damian replied as he scrolled on his phone until he found what he was looking for. His face lit up and he showed the screen. “There’s a gala on tomorrow. Selinas bound to go just to flirt with father, and she’ll probably take Y/N.”
“Ok, that is a better idea than mine,” Dick muttered as he crossed his arms and sulked.
“All of demon brats ideas are better than yours, Dickybird,” Jason said as he sat back down and reopened his book.
                                                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The night of the gala couldn’t come quick enough. Bruce was sitting at the kitchen table in his suit a good hour before they had to go and at that point, he wished he’d hadn’t broken his earbuds the day before. Jason and Tim were shouting at each other in the main first floor bathroom and Damian was about to tackle Dick for making him wear a blue tie. Cass and Steph were on a video chat with Barbs because she was currently at a tech conference so couldn’t make it.
Five minutes before they had to leave, Damian ran out of some room with Dick chasing him. Jason and Tim both tried to run out of the bathroom door at the same time, so Tim slammed into the wall. Steph and Cass walked calmy into the kitchen and laughed at the boys running rampant. Duke had offered to go on patrol solely because he didn’t want to go to the gala.
They all left the mansion and clambered into multiple cars.
                                               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The gala was bustling, and Bruce made his entrance followed by his entourage of children. The questions started up, but all Jason could think about was whether his older brother was there. Dick was standing close to him and swatting away any stuffy aristocrats who wanted to say how much he looked like the Wayne son who had died as a child.
Tim dragged his feet across the gala to where Dick and Jason were standing. He flopped onto the chair next to Jason and slammed his head down onto the table.
“No coffee?” Dick asked as he leaned against the wall and death stared another aristocrat who wanted their weekly Wayne drama fix.
“When have any of these events ever had coffee and I’m too young to drink and also Y/N is at the bar,” Tim rambled as he sat up straight and rubbed sleep out of his eyes.
“You’re like 18, I was drinking from like 15,” Jason started before his brain caught up with the whole sentence, “The bar?”
Tim nodded and fell forwards again. Dick put his hand out at a speed that could rival Wally and caught his younger brothers head. He nodded at Jason who jumped out of his chair and started briskly walking towards the bar.
At the bar, there sat a guy who looked to be in his 30s with bright red hair. A champagne glass was seated in front of him, and he was staring off into space.
Jason walked over and sat down next to him. He didn’t say anything but instead asked the bartender for a gin and tonic and glanced next to him. Y/N looked just like the fuzzy memories he had of him.
“You new around here?” Jason asked as he waited for the bartender to finish his drink.
The guy who was most likely his older brother didn’t say anything in response. He just sighed and sipped his champagne.
“Haven’t seen you at one of these before. You, uh, came with Ms Kyle?”
The guy gave him a nod in response as he rolled up his sleeves slightly. Jason looked down and saw the burn scar from when they’d been making pasta when he was little. His jaw dropped slightly before he recovered quickly. This was absolutely his older brother so what was he supposed to do now?
“I’m Jason Wayne,” he said so as to not spook Y/N.
“Y/N Todd,” Y/N glanced at Jason, “You look like someone I used to know. Have we met before?”
Jason laughed nervously. “If you’ve come to a gala before, probably.”
“Yeah, probably,” Y/N stood up from the chair, “Well I think Selina wanted an early night so I should go. Nice meeting you.”
Jason sighed as his older brother walked away. He downed his gin and tonic before standing up and walking over to where Dick was still sitting with Tim. He sat down on a free chair and leaned his head on the table.
“So?” Dick asked cautiously as he moved his hand out from under Tim’s forehead.
“He’s my brother,” Jason said tiredly.
Dick gasped and leaned in closer. “So, what you going to do about that, little bird?”
“No idea,” Jason said as he sighed.
                                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few days later, Jason was sitting in the library again when Tim ran inside. Jason looked up from his book and raised an eyebrow expectantly.
“He’s been spotted. Cass saw him. Dick’s waiting for you at Wayne Industries,” Tim said out of breath.
Jason placed his book down and ran out of the library. He sprinted down to the Batcave and got changed into his suit. He ran to his bike and pulled out of the cave. He drove down the highways and roads and felt the wind pushing against him. It felt just like how when he was younger, and it was just him and his older brother against the world. He flew down streets and side alleys. He pulled up in front of Wayne Industries and saw Dick sitting on a brick wall nearby. Their comms crackled to life.
“Cass has him and Selina on the roof of Wayne Industries, come on,” Dick said before he ran at the building and started scaling it.
Jason followed suite. The two of them made it to the top in record time and looked around. Cass waved from where she was standing and chatting to Selina. Jason’s older brother was leaning against the staircase door with a frown on his face as he glanced around.
Jason watched him for a moment. He had red hair just like how he did when he didn’t dye it. He was wearing a leather jacket like he did. He had a mask on which resembled the Robin one but not fully. It looked more like a masquerade mask. He was wearing boots, a pair that looked like ones Jason remembered sitting by their childhood apartments door. His older brother looked just like he remembered but also nothing like the teenager he’d idolized.
There was a scar above his eye. There was a necklace around his neck with a black rock. His hair was short and clipped, unlike when they were younger,
 and it sat above his shoulders. He looked so grumpy. Jason had never seen his older brother look that annoyed. He’d always been patient and kind.
“Selina, can we go? I didn’t come all this way just to stand around and chat with your boytoys kids,” Y/N said loudly, interrupting Jason’s thoughts.
Selina turned from Cass and scoffed. “Yeah, you came so far, all the way from Star City and your sad little retail job,” she said sarcastically before turning back to Cass.
Y/N rolled his eyes and finally noticed Jason and Dick. “He has more? How many of you vigilantes are there? Does he grow you in like a lab?”
“One of us was actually,” Dick said as he took a step forward, so he stood in front of Jason, once a protective big brother, always a protective big brother.
“Long story? Yeah, I’m getting used to that,” Y/N shook his head before he glanced at Jason, “What you staring at me like that for?”
Jason tilted his head slightly before taking off his helmet which caused Dick to groan.
“Secret identities, little bird,” Dick said annoyed as he slapped his forehead.
“Oh, shut up,” Jason stepped around Dick, “It’s me, Jason.”
Y/N took a step back and slammed against the wall. “You’re dead.”
Cass turned from where she was talking to Selina and rolled her eyes before resuming their conversation.
“Surprise?” Jason said with jazz hands. “I think we’ve got a lot to talk about.”
Y/N nodded and took off his mask. “Yeah, I think we do.”
                                    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two weeks later…
Y/N, Bruce and Jason were sitting around the manor’s dining table. Bruce was leaned forwards and staring Y/N down. Jason was leaned back and smiling. He hadn’t stopped since he got Y/N back. Y/N looked like he was about to run out of the room.
“Jason, tell your creepy dad he can’t adopt me. I’m a grown ass man who isn’t going anywhere anyways,” He said as he scooted his chair slightly further away from Bruce.
“Hey, he’s still trying to figure out if he can adopt me and I’m legally dead,” Jason said as he raised his hands in mock surrender.
“So am I!” His brother replied exasperatedly.
“I already adopted you, Jason,” Bruce leaned back in his chair, “Found a technicality.”
Jason turned quickly to face his dad. “Ok, you cannot just drop that in conversation, old man.”
Bruce stood up from his chair. “I’m not even 50 yet. You’ve gotta stop calling me that.”
Jason smiled and shook his head. “I’ll call you what I want, Bruce.”
Bruce smiled to himself and walked out of the room. The older Todd leaned closer to Jason and smiled.
“Your family is weird, Jase,” he said with a chuckle.
“Our family actually, big brother,” Jason said with a wide grin as he stood up from his chair. “Wanna go for a ride?”
His big brother jumped out of his chair and smiled. “I bet my bike goes faster than yours.”
The two of them ran towards the manors front door with the widest grins.
Up on the staircase, Bruce stood as he watched them with a smile. Alfred walked up behind him with a smile and tapped him on the shoulder.
“You must stop adopting all these children, Master Bruce,” he said quietly.
“He makes Jason happy, doesn’t he?” Bruce asked.
Alfred pondered for a moment before replying.
“Yes, he does, Master Bruce. That doesn’t mean Master Jason doesn’t still need his father though,” Alfred said, his voice full of care and love for the two of them.
Bruce nodded as he heard the motorbikes start outside. He then smiled and walked off to attend to his work.
Bring Me Home: Chapter 2 Part 2
It's Wednesday! Time for another WIP Wednesday. No Ghost!Robin today. I've been focusing more on this fic. I think I'm going to try and start alternating weeks, but there's no set schedule or plan and it's liable to change at a moment's notice.
Fic Summary: Tim and Danny are both neglected by parents who care more about their work than their families. They deal with this by spending too much time online and find each other playing MMORPGs. They keep up their friendship as Tim becomes Robin and Danny becomes Phantom and don't bother keeping secrets from each other.
Cassie hissed, “What the fuck, Tim!”
“I know!” whispered Tim back. “Danny mentioned home security, but I had no idea it was like that!”
Bart shook his head. “Want help with that kidnapping scheme? I’ll join you on your road to villainy.”
“That’s the problem with Tim,” agreed Conner. “He makes the road to evil look like it’s really the best option. Count me in, too.”
Cassie groaned. “Damn it, you guys are right. I’m in.”
Before Tim could do more than flip them off, Danny was back. “The pop express has returned!”
Cassie was closest to the door and Danny passed over her drink first. Only to freeze as their fingers brushed.
“Oh,” said Danny who looked at their hands then up at Cassie and back to their hands. “Huh.”
“What’s wrong?” asked Cassie and Tim started to get a bad feeling.
Which was only worsened by Danny looking at him with a grin forming on his face. “Sooooo, Tim—”
“No!” Tim shook a finger at him. “You’d better not tell me what I think you’re about to tell me! You’re OP enough! No more!”
Danny raised an eyebrow. “You done?”
Tim sighed and decided to just collapse backwards onto Danny’s bed. He stared at the ceiling and waved a hand in the air. “Yeah. Go ahead.”
Danny, apparently, loved making him suffer and continued passing out the drinks without telling him what he discovered. Then the mattress dipped next to him and Danny was above him with a grin that wouldn’t melt butter.
“So, Tii-iim,” Danny sing-songed.
“Daaan-ny,” replied Tim in the same tone.
“Apparently I can sense metas. And aliens. Which is so cool. They feel so different to humans! I knew about my ghost sense, but didn’t realize that applied to other species.”
Tim just sighed and closed his eyes. “Of course you can.”
“Conner!” The mattress shifted again as Danny moved. “You feel like warm sunshine and it’s so cool. Bart, you feel like static. Which… little awkward for me, but it’ll be good. I should try and get over my fear of electricity. Cassie, you also feel like static, but in a totally different way. Can’t explain it any better than that.”
“Why is static a problem?” asked Bart.
At the same time, Tim said, “I’ll add it to the list. And the descriptions.” He cracked one eye open to look at Danny. “Will you promise to stop developing more powers for me?”
Danny laughed and nudged his knee. “No promises.”
Cassie looked between them. “Does this mean you know?” she asked Danny.
“Wonder Girl, right? And Superboy and Impulse?”
Cassie nodded. “And Tim told us about you.”
“My lips are sealed,” Danny promised.
Tim rolled his eyes and pushed himself up. “Just gimme my water and fix my phone.”
“Wow, Tim,” said Cassie. “Rude much?”
“No. Look, you’ve no idea how ridiculously OP Danny is. Almost every week he calls me saying he discovered something else he can do.”
“If you think that was rude,” added Danny with a laugh, “you should’ve seen the things he said to me when I got him killed in Elf Night.”
“Ugh,” Tim feigned annoyance. “Don’t remind me. Honestly, what were you thinking? You were a rogue! Why did you attack the boss head on like a barbarian? We lost weeks of game progress! Weeks, Danny!”
Danny just laughed and threw the water bottle at his face. Tim caught it easily.
“Just give me your phone, Slim-Slam.”
“Slim-Slam?” asked Conner.
“He tried to object to Tim-Tam. I made him regret it.”
Tim shook his head. “This was a mistake. Why the hell did I ever think it’d be a good idea to let you guys meet.” To hopefully get them to change the subject, he shoved his phone in Danny’s direction. “What do you need to do to this anyway?”
“We just need to make it compatible with ectoplasm. There’s enough ambient ecto in Amity that waiting a few weeks allows it to happen naturally, but that’s not an option for you guys. Tuck and I went through, like, fifty devices figuring out the exact quantities and locations to add ectoplasm to force the process without destroying the device. It took us ages, but we figured it out. Now Tuck and I get extra money from the tech geeks in town who don’t want to wait the month or so it usually takes for new devices to start working.”
“Speaking of Tucker, will I be able to meet him? And Sam? You’re meeting my friends, I want to meet yours.”
Danny shrugged. “Sure. I’ll text them to meet us at Nasty Burger in forty minutes.” He sat at his desk and set down Tim’s phone to do so. Then, he opened a drawer and pulled out a set of micropipettes and disposable tips in a variety of sizes along with an empty glass beaker. Then came out an electronics tool kit. Tim had a similar one, though Danny’s looked like it had been obtained piecemeal as nothing matched. Finally, he opened a different drawer and pulled out a vial of a glowing green liquid.
Tim pushed himself off the bed and moved to stand over Danny’s shoulder. His friends joined him.
Bart asked, “So what will you be doing? What’s that green stuff?”
“It’s ectoplasm. The stuff ghosts and their dimension are made of. Ectoplasm is… complicated. This is unshaped ectoplasm, also called pure ectoplasm. A ghost or sentient creature can impose their will on it and make it function in a specific way. Since I’ve died, I have an easier time shaping it than most humans. I’ll send ‘tech’ vibes at it to get it to fuse to the phone more easily and apply carefully determined quantities to the different parts of the phone.”
“‘Tech vibes.’” Tim couldn’t hold back the groan. “It’s like magic. I hate it.”
Cassie bumped her shoulder against his. “You get that from Bruce.”
“Damn right, I do.”
Tim watched as Danny popped out the sim card. “First thing I’ll do is add a hundred microliters to the sim card. Then I’ll take the screen off and get to work on the innards. Do you guys want new batteries, by the way? Tuck’s got a bunch of ecto-batteries. Could have him bring them along when we meet up. You’d never have to charge your phone again.”
“Hell yeah!” said Conner. “Sign me right up.”
Tim shook his head, but couldn’t hold back the smile. “What do you mean by never have to charge it again?”
“I mean an ecto-battery will power the phone longer than the computer in the phone will last. I’ve switched over all my electronics. Nothing in this house is hooked up to the electricity grid anymore. I haven’t used a wall plug in four months. Not since Tucker and I fixed the batteries my parents designed.”
Tim didn’t like the sound of that. “Two questions. First, if the battery outlasts the phone, how should we dispose of it. And two, more importantly, ‘fixed’? What the hell does that mean?”
Danny had finished with the sim card and discarded the pipette tip in the beaker. Then he set about removing the screen from the phone. “Just bring the phones back to me when you’re done with them. I’ll upgrade your new ones, too. And their designs were liable to explode, overload the device, or bring it to life so it attacked. But Tuck and I took care of all that. Now devices only attack if Technus manages to get through the portal.”
Tim could sense Conner trying to look at him, but he resolutely refused to look away from Danny’s hands. He was removing the cameras and adding more ectoplasm to them, though much less than the sim card needed.
Unable to get Tim’s attention, Conner asked, “Who’s Technus?”
Danny shrugged. “One of my rogues. Tuck thinks he’s the ghost of Nikolai Tesla. He’s interested in controlling all technology and will make himself a giant mechasuit cannibalized from any electronic he can find in, like, a half mile radius. Super annoying.”
So I've decided which episode of the show this will take place during! It's mid season 1, so Jazz knows about Danny but Danny doesn't know she knows. I don't think that contradicts anything I've written (need to reread it), but if it does, no it doesn't. I dunno if most of you know what micropipettes look like, but if there's any interest I can take pics at work tomorrow and post them so you can see what I mean when I talk about the tips and stuff. I meant to do that today and then I didn't.
Mistletoe: Jason Todd X reader
Christmas bingo day 15: mistletoe
Christmas bingo masterlist
Tumblr media
"for the love of –‘’
She really should have seen this coming, right?
***
“Y/n?” she was barely reacting too distracted by what her beloved boyfriend Jason just told her “YN!” her blank face expression made Todd want to shake her a little to bring her back to reality. As for now he was effectively fighting that urge but each second of her acting like a lunatic were putting his patience to a very hard test. “How many fingers do you see?”
“Now that’s mean.” She came to life rolling her eyes at the charades
“Made you get back down to earth.”
“I’m shocked, not hazy.”
“Why?”
“Why?” was he even serious “you want the list on chronological or alphabetical order?”
“Humour me princess.”
“First: you’re attending a Christmas party at the Wayne Manor? You?”
“It’s only for Alfred’s cooking.”
“Mhm. Obviously.” she teased” Second, you are going to wear formal clothes? You?”
“I’m pretty sure you’ll like me in a suit, won’t you?” Jason reached for her waist pulling her closer to him and caressing the small of her back.
“I like you best when - “
“Oh, don’t I know that….” He murmured in her ear “we’ll get there too I promise.”
“Jace?” her sudden pulling back took him by surprise and when she raised her head to meet his eyes, the unclear message coming from them made him shiver.
“You don’t want to go?” a few years prior, if someone were to tell him he would actually have a girlfriend and wanted to show her off to his siblings and – well – Bruce- he’ll laugh at that person face. In the darkest times he was on the war path with his adoptive father and even being in the same city was almost unbearable. Not that it was sunshine and roses now, but they definitely worked through some differences and – a real miracle –talked for the first time in years. “It’s okay if you don’t.’ no matter the effort there was no way to hide the tone of disappointment in his voice. “we can spend the Christmas eve together, just the two of us and –“
“No! no, no! Jason. I do want to go. I mean , come on, Wayne Manor. Maybe I’ll finally wrap my head around the fact that my boyfriend is the son of a billionaire and start taking advantage of it.” She laughed happily ruffling his hair, that were calling for a hairdresser, but she loved that unruly shag regardless. “I just wonder-“
“what? You’re chickening out? You already know all of them, guess that eliminates the element of surprise when Dick climbs the chandelier or starts balancing on the chair.”
“Am I reading too much into it?”
“What are you talking about, princess? What’s there to overinterpret – oh!”
“Yeah….” She muttered and looked down, suddenly embarrassed of what she said, cursing herself internally for destroying the atmosphere as his grip weakened and mouth hanged open. “You’re inviting me to an official party. As your official girlfriend….”
“It’s not like they don’t know we’re together. Damn, Y/N, you had no idea how much teasing I had to put up with.”
“What did you to Tim, Jason?”
“Nothing! I swear.” he let go of her completely, much to her irritation, raising hands in surrender. The man build like a tank were trying to protect himself from his significantly smaller girlfriend.
“Jason Peter Todd.”
“Nothing permanent. Now, don’t change the subject.”
“Me? I’m still waiting for your answer.”
“You’re not reading too much into it. I want you there. Officially. Before someone get any stupid ideas of stealing you away from me.”
“Not a change, pretty boy.” She drummed her fingers on his chest, feeling his heartbeat “not when I almost give you a heart attack every time I’m near you. It’s the kind of power you don’t give up easily.”
“You say that now, you power-hungry woman. I’m sure you’d love some more hearts to your collection.”
“I have always been a fan of quality rather than quantity. And so it happens I got the best quality available on the market” she smiled at him lovingly, her pretty eyes sparkling.
“You’re mine, you little tease” in a blink of an eye he was holding her again, running fingers through her hair and connecting their foreheads, letting himself be vulnerable and wishing she could read his mind and hear the words he was unable to articulate “thank you…”
Thank you for existing.
Thank you for staying by my side.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for accepting my broken, imperfect love.
***
As every real woman, she had nothing to wear and had to fix some outfit with the old clothes, found at back of the closet, about to feel terribly underdressed.
Or at least that was the plan, before she found neatly wrapped package with her name written across the paper and became a proud owner of the most beautiful and elegant dress she has ever seen.
Turned out Jason had an amazing sense of fashion, picking an outfit serving as a mix of style and quietness.
However, when she asked him about it, the only answer she get was I know what I want to see you in. In Jason’s language it was a sign of care that she won’t feel like an outcast around the female guests, but also a little hint at potential jealousy and protection against possible lustful glances from other men.
Doing a poor job at the second part of it, cause once they entered the manor, all eyes landed on her, leaving Jason gritting his teeth and refusing to leave her alone for even a second. This drove him to such an extreme that he even followed her to the bathroom and was giving responses on her behalf whenever anyone dared to ask her to dance.
“No, of course you can not dance with her. Can’t you see she’s already got a partner, back off, dude.”
Such words were followed by the tightening grip on her hip each time a man gathered enough courage to come too close.
Too close being a couple feet.
“Jason!” she whined at some point “don’t be mean. You don’t dance, you had grown attached to the chair and I'm bored. Come on, just let go off me, it’s not like I’m going to run away from you or anything…” she tried to break free but it was no use, considering both Jason’s strength and possessiveness.
“Sorry, princess. I don’t trust those fops. Can’t risk their hands wondering some place only mine are allowed.”
“But Jay-“
“No one but me dances with you.” He said sternly and much to her surprise dragged her to the dancefloor. What was even bigger shock was that he actually knew how to move. He knew the steps, had a perfect sense of rhythm and definitely did not stump on her feet, not even once, holding her gently, leading her to the music and being delicate and protective, almost making her swoon with the charm.
Apparently, she didn’t know her boyfriend at all.At least not from this side.
He never failed to make her feel safe and loved, but now – encompassed by his arms, held like the most precious person in the world, she felt like a true princess. Something she never experienced before.
“How do you like that, love?” he whispered in her ear, holding her a bit more firmly, causing her heart rate to spike.
“moderately –“
“Then why is your heart racing?” he spun her around perfectly, making sure she was quickly and safely back in his hold.
“It’s not.”
“Well then, it’s about to.” He smirked guiding her a little bit to the right, looking up with the mischievous look in his eyes.
Mistletoe.
“You’re not going to kiss me in the crowd with everyone -“
He was going to.
And most importantly – he actually did.
Luckily she didn’t know that plant wasn’t there earlier and only appeared because of some skilfull vigilante being jealous of the glances thrown her way. Luckily she didn't hear the muffled chuckles coming from the side of the stairs as Dick, Tim and Damian appeared all together out of nowhere, after being gone for a longer while.
She didn't care.
Not as long as she was standing under the mistletoe fulfilling the tradition that came with it with the most wonderful and sneaky bastard if a man there was.
And who couldn't care less about the glances now.
Title: Mentor Tim
So we all know how similar Tim is to Bruce, I feel like as Tim gets older he promises himself not to become like him, in regards to his closed off-ness and anti-social behavior, gets therapy (boy was that something else), matures as a person and learns to take care of himself properly (not everyone has an Alfred lying around y’know).
So older Tim, who does not want to be Batman (who does at this point?), and considers Red Tornado (Aka; the only adult who really cared) his idol, makes an intellectual decision.
To mentor 10+ young vigilantes, that are basically neglected or ignored by their mentors, that he met once on a mission, apparently they’re the new Young Justice members (why do all the unwanted ones end up there, seriously, has everyone learned nothing??).
It’s not that he planned to mentor the young superheroes, but he couldn’t really ignore them when they took to him like little ducklings to water all because he was nice to them.
The were very undertrained and uncoordinated, and in desperate need of guidance, and Tim who has caused or been apart of some of the craziest shit known to man has a lot of knowledge to spare:
Tim: Leo, for the love of god. Put. That. Down. Number one rule of dealing with magical artifacts or magic in general is don’t touch it and run, don’t walk away if it starts to glow.
—————————
Tim: Keith, seriously dude, if you need any new equipment, swords, knives, anything at all, just tell me. Y’know what I can set it up with one phone call, hold on.
—————————
Tim: Peter, if that jerk at school talks to you like that again I give you my permission to beat his ass, I don’t care what your school or “mentor” have to say, they clearly know nothing about teenagers.
—————————
Tim: Of course you can skip training next week for your recital Sofia, and actually, I cancelled training for everyone when they told me they all wanted to go to support you, thanks for inviting me by the way, I can’t wait.
—————————
Tim: Oh, you’ve had an argument with your parent, Nick? Hold on just a sec.
Tim: Yeah, I just freed my schedule so we could have the whole day to ourselves, I remember those movies you told me you wanted to marathon, let’s go watch them in the big screen room, bundle ourselves in the softest blankets and eat a sh- heck ton of ice cream, while we talk about it, if you feel like it, of course.
—————————
Tim: I noticed how much extensive energy you have even after a full training session, Mateo, so I thought you and I could stay and spar, even after everyone’s done. I’ve brought new training equipment for you to try and researched a few new techniques that correlate with your abilities.
—————————
Tim: Don’t worry about not being able to speak, Amara, I know plenty of sign, in many languages, in fact.
—————————
Tim: *on a phone call*
Tim: What do you mean you’re in a burning building?
Tim: What do you mean you set it on fire?!
Tim: Send me your location, Amber, I’ll be there in ten, no- five.
—————————
And that’s how the hero community noticed how the newly proclaimed Young Justice mentor Red Robin nowadays often had one, if not all, of his ducklings kids students standing proudly next to him.
Bonus:
Tim: Red, I am so sorry for all the years you had to put up with my bullshit.
Tim: I’m basically the only adult- no, person, who cares about them!
Tim: I don’t know how they’ve been alive for so long!
Red Tornado: You are forgiven, Tim, although I must admit, it is quite satisfying that you know of my pain.
Tim, with haunted eyes: You have no idea.
You remember the day you met Tim Bradford perfectly. It was six months ago, and you haven’t been the same since then…
✯✯✯✯✯
6 Months Ago
The text you got from your sister Lucy this morning just said, “My place. 7 pm.”
You, of course, agree to visit her. It has been a long week, and you love spending time with her. When she adds that she found a new recipe she wants to try, your excitement level grows tenfold.
While you sit on her couch, listening to her talk about her day at work between prepping the recipe, it's easy to relax and smile. You hit the sister jackpot, you think. When Lucy falls silent, you glance over and ask what’s wrong.
“I forgot the spices,” she says with a pout. “The store at the corner should have them, I’ll be back in ten.”
“Luce, you don’t have to get the exact spices,” you point out.
“But then it won’t taste right! I’ll be right back, but can you let Tamara in if she forgot her key again?”
You promise to do just that, shaking your head as Lucy rushes out with another guarantee she’ll be quick. Five minutes later, someone knocks on the door, and you stretch as you stand.
“Tamara, I’m going to buy you a keychain for your birthday,” you call as you walk to the door.
As soon as you open it, you see it’s not Tamara.
“You’re not Lucy,” the handsome man standing before you says, leaning forward to glance over your shoulder.
“She just ran to the store; she’ll be right back. Come on in,” you invite.
“You’re letting strangers into an apartment that isn’t yours?” he asks as he closes the door.
You return to the couch and sigh. “You’re not a stranger; you’re Tim Bradford, right?”
He furrows his brows before nodding. Before he can ask how you know that, you answer, “Lucy talks about you a lot. Undersold your looks, though, so I’ll have to talk to her about that.”
“Wait- so, Lucy is…”
“My sister.”
“She never mentioned a sister.”
The door opens, and Lucy reenters with a bag in the crook of her elbow. “Tim? What are you doing here?”
“I, uh, Angela wanted me to ask if you’d be up to help with another UC op and I’m supposed to help you prepare. But, I see you are busy, so I’ll just go.”
“Officer Bradford?” you ask. When he turns to face you, you smile and say, “You should stay for dinner.”
“Oh, no, I can’t intrude on… this.”
Lucy looks at you, disappointed, as she shakes her head. You’re always willing to listen to stories about Tim, yet you ignored your chance to properly introduce yourself.
“Tim, this is my sister,” Lucy says, giving him your name.
Tim repeats your name under his breath, returning your smile as he agrees to stay for dinner.
“I’m going to regret this,” Lucy mumbles as she resumes cooking.
“I won’t.” You say it low enough that only Tim can hear, but his smile makes you think he wants to agree.
✯✯✯✯✯
Present Day - Halloween
“Good morning,” you call as you enter Lucy’s apartment. “And Happy Halloween.”
“Hey,” Lucy replies, hugging you as she asks Tamara to get the blueberries from the fridge.
“We don’t have any,” Tamara announces.
“Wha- I just went shopping. Hey, when you finish something, you need to put it on the shopping list.”
“I didn’t eat them,” Tamara argues. Lucy gives her a look she mastered for getting you to confess, and Tamara repeats, “I didn’t!”
 “Luce, I think you have a ghost,” you tease. “Am I still coming over tonight?”
“Don’t you have plans with Tim?” Tamara asks.
“He’s working,” you and Lucy answer together.
“Of course, you’re still coming over tonight,” Lucy tells you.
Someone knocks on the door, and when Lucy turns around, you steal a piece of fruit from the blender, winking at Tamara when she laughs.
“Hello,” Lucy greets.
“Hi. I’m Margaret from 604. You’re a cop, right?” the woman asks.
“Yeah. Uh, what’s going on?”
You follow Lucy, Tamara, and Margaret down the hall, surprised to see the argument unfolding as an older woman throws equipment out of her apartment.
“Whoa. Police,” Lucy calls. “What’s going on?”
“They robbed me!” the woman accuses.
“Okay, that is not at all true,” a man kneeling beside the equipment says.
“Mrs. Crouch hired us to rid her home of an aggressive spirit,” his partner adds.
“You mean a ghost? You guys are ghost hunters?” Tamara asks excitedly.
Lucy looks over at you, and you raise your hands in surrender. “I was completely kidding about the ghost thing.”
“Yeah, we are,” the man answers. “The spirit in Mrs. Crouch’s apartment is rather just stubborn, so we said that we would do a follow-up…”
“Hey,” you whisper to Tamara. “As entertaining as this is, I need to go to work, so, uh, keep me updated and tell Lucy I’ll see her later?”
Tamara nods distractedly, and you pat her shoulder before walking away.
✯✯✯✯✯
Lucy wants to call you. You’re the only other person in the world who understands the emotions she’s dealing with right now. But, since you’re at work, she decides to tell Nolan and ask his opinion instead.
“Your mother did what?” he exclaims.
“She pre-paid for me to have my eggs frozen at a fertility clinic,” she answers.
“I thought you and your mother weren’t talking.”
Lucy scoffs before replying, “She’s definitely talking now. Seriously, what makes her think she has the right?”
She and Nolan fall silent as Grey and Tim walk in, preparing for roll call.
“Alright. Nolan…” Wade begins, pulling a piece of candy from an orange bucket. “Can you tell me what today is and what ‘ACH’ stands for?”
“Today is Halloween, and I have no idea what ‘ACH’ stands for,” Nolan answers, prepared to catch the candy.
“No candy for partial answers. Harper?”
“Anything can happen,” Nyla answers, catching her candy as she finishes. “Basically a reminder to be extra careful ‘cause today is Halloween and Halloween is unpredictable.”
“Correct. And since Officer Thorsen has range qualifications today, you’re back to riding with Nolan.”
“Oh, just like old times.”
“Yeah, without the fear of the whole blue-page thing,” Nolan adds.
“Uh, what kind of unpredictable can we expect today?” Lucy asks.
“Good question Chen.”
Tim continues, “Lot of liquid courage. Lot of 211s. Teenagers snatching little kids’ candy. Masked people running into liquor stores. Do they have a gun or are they just late for a party? Muzzle discipline is crucial.”
“And?” Wade presses. “Can you remind us how you got your uniform torn three Halloweens ago?”
“Uh… if, you get dispatched to a loud party, make sure they know you’re not the stripper,” Tim answers slowly.
Lucy laughs as the other officers cheer. He looks over at her, and she presses her lips together, trying and failing to stop.
“We’ll try to get you home on time, but its Halloween, so…” Wade begins before everyone finishes, “Anything can happen.”
“I need to go call my sister,” Lucy whispers to Nolan.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Hello?” you ask, answering your phone.
“Hey, have you talked to Mom recently?” Lucy asks quickly.
“No. Why?”
“Because she paid to have my eggs frozen at a fertility clinic!”
“She did what?!”
“I know! I- why didn’t you get a call?”
“Because I have a boyfriend, so I’m the good daughter,” you tease. “But, Luce, that’s completely your choice. Think about it before you make a decision, okay?”
“I- I will, it’s just-“
“She shouldn’t have done it without asking, but she’s, well, she’s Mom and she’s borderline insane,” you finish.
“Yeah,” Lucy sighs. “Ooh, wait, I have something to tell you about Tim, too!”
✯✯✯✯✯
“I’m just saying, I am only 29,” Lucy continues. “My eggs are nowhere near their expiration date. But clearly, my mother thinks that I’m a pathetic loser who’s never gonna find a partner before her fertility clock ticks down.”
Tim looks to the ceiling, wondering why she is talking to him about this.
“Have you talked to your sister?” he asks.
“Yes. She thinks I should think about it before I decide what to do.”
“I agree. It sounds like your mom is just looking out for you, knowing how busy you are.”
“Wha- are you taking her side?”
“I’m not taking her side. It’s just—you know what, talk to your sister, I’m not doing this with you.”
“She didn’t make an appointment for my sister,” Lucy grumbles.
✯✯✯✯✯
When Tamara texts you that Lucy and Angela are working on the case, you decide not to hand out candy with them. You know Lucy, and she’ll get distracted and go on a legitimate ghost hunt, so you let yourself into Tim’s house when you get off work instead.
You’re not expecting him to get off early, so when he walks through the door just a few minutes after you sit down, you’re surprised. When you see he’s still wearing his uniform, you remember what Lucy told you about the stripper incident a few Halloweens ago and start laughing.
Your laughter shakes your entire body, and you lean against the arm of the couch for support. Tim watches you, confused and slightly concerned about what is causing you to laugh so hard. He moves to stand at the back of the couch, but when you catch sight of his uniform, your laughter starts anew. Pressing your hand to your chest as it gets tight, you force yourself to take a few deep breaths.
“What is so funny?” Tim asks when you begin to quiet.
“I- I didn’t call a stripper,” you blurt out before laughing again.
“I’m going to kill your sister,” he says under his breath.
Between laughs, you say, “Not if the ghost does first.”
“What are you talking about?”
As you look up, you notice he’s unbuttoned the top of his uniform, and tears begin leaking from your eyes as you hold your laughter inside.
“I thought you were working late,” you say, wiping the tears away.
“Got off early. I thought you were going to Lucy’s.”
“They’re hunting ghosts.”
Tim wants to ask more but knows better. He’s heard enough about Lucy and her day. When Tim left work, he considered the prospect of spending more time with you, but now he’s unsure if that’s a good idea.
“Did you bring your own music?” you ask, chuckling again with your teasing.
“Stop,” Tim answers roughly before walking toward his room to change.
You’re laying it on thick, but the story is too funny not to take advantage of it at least for a while. When he’s well and truly annoyed, you’ll have to spend a long time and a lot of attention apologizing, but for now, you think it’s worth it. He reappears from the hall, dressed in a Henley and sweatpants.
“Boo!” you call. “Finish the show? Please?” You bat your eyelashes as you ask but Tim ignores you. “Hey, Tim, for- for scientific reasons: where is the best place to rip the uniform? Like, straight down the middle, or…”
“Don’t start,” he warns.
“Too late.”
His jaw clenches, and the fact that he hasn’t kissed you yet makes you realize he got annoyed way faster than usual.
“Tim, I’m sorry,” you say quietly, looking over the back of the couch at him. “Lucy shouldn’t have told me, but I shouldn’t have been so… so teasing about it.”
“You’re right.”
“Was today okay? At work? I heard about the zombie drug but I know Halloween is a rough day for cops.”
“It was fine.”
His short answers and inability to look at you make you sigh. You stand, walking to his side and leaning against the counter.
“I really am sorry,” you whisper. “I won’t do it again.”
Tim looks at you from the corner of his eye, and you amend, “I won’t take it as far again.”
“Sure you won’t.”
“Tim, why does it bother you so much?”
“Because- look, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I want to be more than a Halloween cop horror story to you.”
Your eyes widen as he speaks, and when he finishes, you ask, “Kiss me?”
“What?”
“Tim,” you whine, grabbing his arm with both hands. “That was the sweetest thing you’ve ever said. Please kiss me?”
“Go find a stripper willing to kiss you,” he replies.
“Tim, please. If you break up with me my mom will freeze my eggs.”
Tim tips his head forward, sighing when it hits your shoulder. “There’s two of you.”
“Hey, you knew what you were getting into. Besides, aren’t I the ‘best thing that’s ever happened’ to you?”
Shaking his head, Tim stands to his full height, and when you open your mouth to say something else, he cups your face in his hands and kisses you. The teasing comment dies away as you kiss Tim.
“You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, too,” you say against him.
“Maybe you should remember that the next time Lucy tells you about something I say at work.”
The rest of the evening passes slowly.
It does nothing for your nerves, truthfully, but you keep yourself preoccupied with Wade. He crawls now and that leaves him wanting to explore every space possible. So, while Wally runs out for dinner and Linda wraps up a meeting with her editor, you watch over him and make sure he doesn’t get into anything he shouldn’t.
Dinner is deep-dish pizza—directly from Chicago. It’s all very indulgent, the way Wally can do things like that; he spoils you in that regard and you tell him as much as you wash dishes and he puts them away.
“Nah, it’s nothing,” he says, shooting you a small smile. “Besides, it’s for me, too.”
And you can tell that’s true by the four empty boxes of pizza that he ate, with two for you and Linda.
But still. When he leaves…
It’s not just that that you’re going to miss. With or without the speed, you’re going to miss him. Him, Linda, and little Wade.
Despite not saying that—because you don’t want to be a downer, because their home is in Keystone City, not here, and you don’t want to be selfish like that—he senses the shift in your mood.
“You know,” he starts, “me and Lin were thinking…”
“That’s never good.”
He nudges you gently, grinning. You shake your head, smiling, too. You pass him a freshly-washed plate and he dries it.
“Well, wait until you hear what we were thinking about.”
“What?”
“We think you should visit us every now and then.”
The thought that they want you around is warming, as usual. But…
“I mean, I would love to, Wally, but I can’t really afford that… Maybe, after I see how everything adds up during the fall, I can come for the holidays or something. But…”
He shakes his head. “Come on, kiddo. You think we’d say that and leave it up to you?”
“I don’t expect—”
“I know. But you should. We want to do whatever we can to see you. You aren’t the only one that’s going to miss something when we leave, you know. That’s why we’re doing this. Besides,” he grins at you, lightening up. “Who do you think you’re talking to? I can get you to Keystone in under a minute right now.”
Considering that Linda has told you that his speed is efficient but leaves one with a horrible bout of nausea and vertigo—at least in the beginning; she’s barely affected these days—you feel some mild apprehension.
But those things are temporary. You can withstand that, if only to see them again.
“Or,” he goes on, “we can fly you out, but that would honestly be pretty cumbersome and would also take too long.”
“It’s a plane, Wally. That is the fastest form of transportation we have in this country.”
He sniffs. “I’m the fastest form of transportation we have in this country. In the world! One of them, anyway.”
“Well, that’s how we normal human beings function. Not everyone can run faster than the speed of light.”
“Not everyone should,” he agrees. “I’d lose my appeal. That would suck.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
“So, is that a yes or—?”
“Alright,” you relent, smiling. “How often are we talking?”
He smiles a tad bashfully. “Once or twice a month? You can come on the weekends… Just—you know. I know you’re gonna be busy with classes but…”
“It sounds like I should be getting a nice break every month if we do that. I mean, I can’t promise I won’t have work—”
“Just as long as you’re around, kid. That’s all we want.”
Your face warms at the earnestness in his words, embarrassed, though you know you really shouldn’t be. “Wally.”
“Hey, I’m gonna be honest with you. I’ve been in this game too long to try and dance around feelings. Hopefully your boy will learn that, too.”
“You aren’t wrong,” you mutter, shutting off the water and drying your hands, making a mental reminder to put on some lotion before they get annoyingly dry from the hot water and dish soap. “I’m just not… used to that.”
He shrugs, tossing his dish towel over his shoulder. “Like I said. In a world like ours… it’s important.”
You don’t disagree. But you can’t rail too hard on Tim. Questionable decisions regarding his feelings aside, the both of you only came to your senses after he had a close-call today. What does that say about you, that he has to nearly die for you to realize you need to see him again? Need to clear the air?
It’s human, you think. So very terribly human of you.
It’s not like you’re unappreciative of him in your life but… you know this dance and song. You only realize what you have when you lose it. Look at your parents. You’ve slipped right now but you’ll fix it. You’ll make sure he knows how much he means to you.
But more importantly, right now…
“You guys… mean a lot to me, too.” You turn, seeing Linda pause near the island, and meet her brown eyes and even though it makes your face hot and the words get stuck in your throat, you force them out, underpinned with what you hope they can tell is sincerity. “You do. So much.”
Your throat tightens and you duck your head as your eyes burn.
Hard to quantify. Hard to put a label on what they mean to you.
But you know that much. That they mean the world to you.
Warm, strong arms come around you, squeezing you tight. You sniffle when you feel Linda come up behind you, squeezing you, too.
It’s an emotional day, you decide. For all of you.
So, you take a long shower to try and pull yourself together, then head to bed, bidding Wally and Linda goodnight.
You don’t intend to fall asleep when you crawl into your bed. It’s better to stay up, to wait for Tim to get here. But the day’s events start weighing down on you as you curl up beneath the blankets.
You try valiantly to stay awake by scrolling on your phone but it’s a Sisyphean task to do so. As your eyelids grow heavier and heavier, you know it will be a task that you fail as you stop fighting and give in to sleep.
Tumblr media
It’s only the vibration of your phone that rouses you.
Groping for it, the display is obscenely bright in the darkness of your room. But the text waiting for you is unmistakable, impossible to miss.
i’m here
Suddenly recalling what you and Tim had agreed upon, you shoot up in bed, ignoring the head rush the action gives you.
The window that leads out to the fire escape is right next to your bed, covered by curtains. You toss your phone aside, rolling out of the warm cocoon of blankets; the AC in this place works well, a little too well, you think groggily as your bare feet connect with cold wood floors.
You shove aside the curtains and though you know who is waiting for you, that it is Tim, just Tim, your best friend, the still-not-fully-awake part of you clenches up in fear, thinking it might be Batman that is moving in the shadows, only barely illuminated by the full moon. But you know better than that.
It helps that your eyes are already adjusted to the darkness, recognizing the figure crouched in your fire escape. Dressed in… oddly enough, sweatpants, a t-shirt, and a light jacket. Completed with a plain black domino mask—not the usual one he wears, more akin to Robin, save for the color—that obscures the blue eyes you know and love.
You reach for the window. Well-oiled and taken care of by the owners, it is virtually silent as it slides open.
Muggy July heat rushes in, chasing away the cold.
Without the window and with your vision quickly clearing from bleariness, you can really take him in. The tension in his body, the way a breeze ruffles through dark hair, the twitch of his hands to you before they clench into fists. Waiting.
For you.
Your throat thickens painfully when your eyes snag on the white gauze taped to the left side of his neck.
Just a graze, Steph told you. But he lost a bit of blood anyway and his neck… if it had been the right side, would he not be here right now? Maybe it doesn’t matter. It’s his neck, there are so many important arteries running through there.
If anything else had happened, if he’d moved even a little bit, he wouldn’t be here.
That realization, coupled with the overwhelming emotions at seeing him again since everything, pushes you over the edge.
Your eyes burn with tears. You reach forward, ignoring the soreness in your belly, one hand grabbing his wrist and tugging him right into the circle of your arms.
That breaks the stalemate. He goes quickly, arms sliding around you as the first of your tears start sliding down your cheeks.
“Tim…”
He holds you tighter, impossibly warm, letting out a shuddery breath and whispering your name, too, everything inside you shivering at the sound, at the warmth that wraps up the syllables of your name.
“I’m okay,” he breathes. “I’m okay, I swear.”
“You were shot.”
An exhale of a laugh. It sounds shaky with emotion.
“Technically, I was grazed.”
“Tim.”
He presses his nose to your hair, hand stroking up your back.
“I’m okay,” he whispers, lips brushing your forehead. “I wasn’t going to die before I got to see you. No way.”
You sniffle. The two of you are quiet, speaking lowly, but you’re suddenly too aware of the other window on the fire escape, the one for Linda and Wally’s room. You don’t want to wake them—or god forbid, Wade—so you reluctantly extract yourself from his arms, tugging him again.
He follows easily, sliding through the window with a grace you aren’t used to. He shuts the window silently behind him, banishing the muggy air that had leaked inside. You wipe away your tears, attempting to piece yourself together.
As he turns back to you, hesitantly now, the air conditioner clicks on, and a second later, cold air starts blowing into your room. It should help cover your voices a little bit.
For a moment, it is silent.
Tim shifts on his feet across from you. The domino mask renders him impervious. Impossible to read without seeing his eyes.
But not totally impossible. The way he bites his lip doesn’t just draw your attention to his mouth, tempting, traitorous thoughts briefly crossing your mind, but it also clues you into his nervous state.
“I’m sorry.”
He speaks first, blurting the words out, seeming almost surprised at the way they escaped him before he decides to go with it, doubling down on it.
Taking a deep breath, he looks at you, whispering your name. “I’m sorry. For lying to you. For coming to you as Red Robin instead of myself. For everything. I just… I didn’t know how to handle it.”
“I know,” you sigh. “I know.”
You were in that position, too. You didn’t fuck it up this badly but… you each had your parts to play. No one is blameless here.
“I just,” he stops, looking away, hands clenching at his sides. “I want to be friends. If anything else. I want that.”
If anything else.
You understand what he is saying here.
He isn’t here under any pretenses. Isn’t expecting you to take him in with open arms. Would be fine as friends.
Well, you don’t want that.
“Tim.”
He looks at you. You extend a hand. Waiting. Not demanding.
Slowly, he comes to you. Palm sliding against yours. Warm and a little clammy, calloused but still soft.
A few inches of space separate you when he stops.
This close, you can feel the heat of him. Smell his shampoo, soft and fragrant. Eucalyptus.
You squeeze his hand once then let go.
He and Red Robin are two sides of the same coin. There is no Tim Drake without Red Robin, you think. Not right now.
Maybe it’ll change, down the line. One part of you selfishly hopes so.
You’ll always want him. But as Red Robin, the risk of losing him triples and you are greedy enough to want to mitigate it. The same with Steph. Even with Wally, who is considerably more durable. All of them, duty-bound, honor-bound. You cannot ask that of them.
Right now, though, you think you can make that demand. At least temporarily.
You reach for him. Pausing when your hands near his face. But he doesn’t move. Just looks down at you and you wonder if he can hear your heart, with how hard, how loudly, it pounds in your chest.
You have to be certain.
So, when your fingers finally touch the smooth material of the mask, before trying to lift it, you ask, in a whisper, “Can I?”
“Yes,” he breathes, some emotion you don’t know underlying his voice, one that makes your face warm and your heart skip a beat.
Your fingers find the edge, slowly, gently peeling it up. It peels and peels and peels until finally, it detaches into your hands. Almost flimsy now but with a certain weight.
That’s not what retains your attention, though.
It’s him. It’s always him.
Tim’s eyes are closed, the tiniest of wrinkles found between his brows.
You imagine what it must be like to him. Letting you do that. Peel back the final layer of him once and for all. Letting you see him. Tim. Your Tim.
Keeping the domino mask loosely grasped in one hand, your other reaches for him, your thumb finding the wrinkle between his brows. It smooths out instantly at your touch and his eyes flutter open.
There they are.
It’s a shade of blue that haunts your dreams most nights.
Usually a lighter, softer color in the light, something like cornflowers, but right now, they’re midnight sky blue, looking at you with a heavy kind of affection, warm and unbridled.
Your hand settles on his cheek. He leans into the touch. Your thumb strokes over the sensitive skin under his eye. Where dark circles mar the skin, exhaustion finally clear in his face.
You smile sadly. “You look tired, Timmy.”
“Last couple weeks,” he swallows, “have been… rough.”
“Tell me about it.”
He smiles. It’s a small thing but no less beautiful to your eyes.
Then he sobers up, gazing at you, pained. “I am sorry.”
“I know.”
“I was an idiot.”
“I know.” You take a deep breath. “We both were.”
He opens his mouth to protest but you speak before he can.
“It’s true. You know that. We didn’t handle this like we should but it’s… it’s in the past. We can’t change it. We just have to move forward.”
A slow nod, then his eyes flicker to your hand, still between you two, still holding onto the domino mask. He takes it from you.
You aren’t sure what you expect, but it’s not for him to toss it away, landing somewhere in the darkness, a near silent sound.
“Tim—“
“It’ll never come between us again,” he whispers and your breath catches at his words; his hands find yours, pulling the one on his cheek into his own, squeezing. “I promise.”
You take a second to compose yourself, letting out a slow breath.
“I believe you,” you finally say. “And… no more lies. Please. Tell me the truth. The whole truth. I want to be there for you, for all of it.”
“It’s going to hurt.”
Not a protest. Just a statement. A warning.
“So, it’s even more important for me to be there.”
He swallows, eyes searching yours. “Are you… are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
“So… we’re okay?”
“No.”
His face falls. “Whatever it is… I’ll make it up to you. I swear. Whatever you want.”
“I want you.”
“You have me,” he promises.
“Not like that.”
He stiffens up, breath catching as he understands what you mean. He looks down at you, shock clear. Understanding but not truly believing. That won’t do.
“I love you, Tim. Not just as a friend but…”
You’ve said it to them both. I love you. And this ‘I love you’ isn’t better than the one you tell Steph, than the one you told him for the first time, back when your feelings were still strictly platonic. It doesn’t mean something more, something deeper, something elevated just because it’s romantic. But it’s different. In what you want. In what you long for.
He whispers your name.
You let out a slow breath. “And if you want that, too, then…”
“Of course I do,” he breathes, letting go of your hands to cup your face, bringing you closer. “Of course I do. There’s nothing else, no one else, I want. I just… I never wanted to assume.”
“I know.”
“But if you’re on board then… then we can try it out.”
It feels more like ‘trying it out,’ though. Despite the uncertainty, the whirlwind of emotions, everything that has happened, finally talking it out, finally laying everything out on the table… you’ve found solid ground. A foundation you can build upon.
It is no mere crush. No simple infatuation.
You are in love with Tim Drake. Plain and simple.
And he is in love with you, too.
You close your eyes, fingers curling around his wrists. After a beat, he presses his forehead to yours.
“I love you, too, you know,” he whispers. “I have for a long time.”
Your face is hot, flushed with heat, your heart pounding. You feel so light, like you might fall up, untethered by gravity and floaty from the cotton candy-sweet warmth unspooling in your chest, clogging your veins and the arteries of your heart. It wouldn’t be a bad way to go.
But before you do…
“Tim.”
“Yeah?”
“Kiss me.”
He kisses you.
Gently at first, tenderly, lips warm, soft, tasting faintly of spearmint. You feel like you might melt into a puddle of goo at it, at knowing it’s Tim who is kissing you so sweetly, making your knees feel a little weak.
You shuffle closer. He inhales sharply at you pressing into his space, curling around you to close the final bits of distance. It turns the kiss a little fevered, a little hungry, a little desperate.
You’ve missed him so much. You can’t stop yourself from whispering that, pulling away to do so.
He shudders at your words, lips pressing to your cheek, then your jaw, then your neck, and you open yourself up to him, too willing, too happy to let him have you like this.
He keeps saying it. Whatever you want. But he can have whatever he wants from you, too. Anything. Everything.
“I love you,” he breathes against your neck and your breath catches at the reverence in his voice. “Can you—can you say it again?”
“I love you, Tim,” you whisper and it pulls another shiver from him, lips pressing to your fluttering pulse and your knees really feel like they might give out.
Your fingers grasp the material of his jacket, tugging, and he brings his lips back to yours, giving you a mind-numbing, synapse-slowing kiss.
You separate eventually, foreheads pressed together, trying to catch your breath.
“Will you stay?” you ask softly.
“I’ll stay,” he promises, leaning back to press a heartachingly tender kiss to your forehead. You close your eyes, holding onto him.
After a moment, he pulls away, shedding his jacket, draping it over the footboard. You close the curtains over your window, then crawl into bed. When Tim comes over, he tries to push you over. Not hard. A gentle—persistent—nudge to your shoulder, keeping in mind your injury, though you should tell him that it’s healing much better at nearly three weeks since it happened. Enough so that Steph said she could see about Crystal coming over to take the stitches out, just to avoid waiting at the hospital, and the bill, too.
“Oh, hey—”
“Let me sleep there,” he urges. “I feel better if you’re furthest from the window.”
“Hero types, I swear.”
He doesn’t dignify that with a response. Instead, he leans down and scoops you into his arms. You yelp and he shushes you. You can’t stop your giggles as he unceremoniously drops you on the other side of the bed, the one closest to the door. He crawls in after you.
“You’re going to wake them up,” he whispers but he’s grinning, too, as he slides under the covers, laying on his side.
“Who’s fault is that?” you shoot back. “Just ‘cause you and your savior complex need to be by the window—”
He muffles his snickers into the pillow, eyes closed, lips spread in a grin. Your chest warms and you wiggle closer to him.
Tim lifts an arm so you can settle against his side. Wary of the gauze on the hollow of his throat, you settle for tucking your head underneath his chin, pressing a soft kiss to his neck.
He strokes a hand down your back, a warm brand between your shoulder blades. Sleep isn’t far off your conscience, right at the edges of it, and with the warmth of his body and the reassurance of his embrace, you’re moving fast to it.
But before you do…
“Tim.”
“Hmm?”
“You’ll… you’ll be here in the morning, right?”
His arm tightens around you. You feel him press a kiss to your hair.
“I’ll be here. I promise.”
Tumblr media
And he is.
When you rouse an indeterminate amount of time later, awakened by the sounds of activity outside your door—Wade’s high-pitched giggles, Wally’s low murmurs to him as he feeds him breakfast, the water running in the pipes as Linda uses the bathroom—Tim is still there. With you.
Deep in sleep, still, even with the slivers of light that come in from your window and the noises coming in from outside. Probably the repercussions of his ‘rough couple weeks.’ It’s quite similar with you, if you’re being honest. Besides, you hardly mind, basking in the feel of your legs tangled together underneath the blankets, the heavy but reassuring weight of his arm around you.
You manage to pull away a little bit to look at him, blinking out the bleariness in your eyes as you rest your head on the pillow, his face a couple inches from yours. Eyes shut, dark lashes casting shadows over his cheeks, breathing soft and slow. His hair is a mess, some parts of it flat from the pillow and sticking up in other areas. You spy a few creases from the pillow on his cheek, too. But even with that, he is still so beautiful to you.
You sigh, snuggling closer to him, shifting so you can run your fingers through his hair, your eyes falling shut again. You can stand to sleep a little while longer.
He lets out a soft, contented sigh as your fingers glide through his hair, gently taking out tangles as you go.
You pull away after a moment, feeling sleep lapping at your senses again.
You doze for a little while, rousing again to more noise from outside. The sound of the TV. Wally and Linda murmuring to each other. Wade giggling.
Tim shifts, groaning quietly. The sound, rough with sleep, makes something inside you clench, sparks of heat waking you up more fully so you can watch him wake up, too.
He rolls onto his back, stretching, then sagging into the mattress. You stay curled up on your side, your calf thrown over his, watching him wake up with a small smile on your lips that you know must be horribly lovesick.
Finally, he turns to look at you, blinking the sleep out of his eyes.
“Hi.”
He gives you a sleepy smile. “Hi. Watching me sleep? Weirdo.”
He still has pillow creases on his face. You reach up to trace them.
“Well, you like this weirdo.”
“I love this weirdo,” he corrects. “Guess it’s fair, considering my night job.”
“Right. Watching you sleep—which I wasn’t, by the way, I was just waiting for you to wake up—”
“Sounds an awful lot like watching me sleep—”
You grin and pinch his cheek. He grunts, halfheartedly batting your hand away and taking it in his, lacing your fingers together.
“Anyway. That’s not that big of an offense compared to, oh, I don’t know, dressing up and fighting crime each night.”
“Think that’s part of the whole ‘we love each other thing,’” he teases.
You smile. “I guess so.”
“So, then…” His eyes stray from your face, to something else, nerves clear as day; too early in the morning for him to make a solid attempt at hiding them from you and well. You know him. For better and for worse.
“Mmhm?”
“I guess I should take you on a date.”
“You guess?”
He blushes, red settling high in his cheeks in a way that is… decidedly tempting. “I mean I should. If—if you want to, of course.”
“I didn’t kiss you just for kicks, you know.”
“I sure hope not,” he agrees, looking back at you, face softening. “Will you, then?”
“Of course, Timmy.”
“And maybe…” He turns, reaching for you. You go easily, your fingers still tracing the pillow creases on his cheek. A strong arm wraps around your shoulders as he turns onto his side. In the warm light of the morning, his eyes are a softer shade of blue, the one you know and love.
“Maybe…?”
“Maybe… you’ll give me the honor of being my girlfriend?”
Oh, geez.
Your face flares with heat, heart skipping a beat.
“You cornball.”
“You love it.”
Your palm finally settles on his cheek—hot to the touch, too, flush still lingering behind. You lean forward to press your lips to his forehead. He lets out a shuddery breath, arm tightening around you briefly.
“Yes, Tim,” you murmur against his skin. “I would be happy to.”
“Thank you,” he whispers, but it doesn’t like he’s thanking you for agreeing to it—at least, not just that.
Maybe for everything.
But— “You don’t have to thank me. It’s not… I love you. That’s all there is and that’s all there ever will be.”
You pull back, thumb stroking over his cheek. He leans forward, lips pressing gently to your cheek. Your fingers find their way into his hair, sighing contentedly as he kisses down to your jaw.
You get so caught up in that, the knock on your door scares the shit out of you both.
Wally calls out your name. “You up, kiddo? Lin’s makin’ eggs and rice.”
Tim pulls away quickly and you sit up, your face hot.
“I’ll, um, be out in a few.” Your voice is steady, thankfully, but you can’t say much about your pulse, your heart beating out of your chest. Tim is sitting up, too, looking around the room—presumably for the mask he discarded last night.
“Okay,” Wally says. “Will Tim be joining us?”
You both freeze.
You should’ve known better, really. Wally’s been doing this for a long time. Nothing much will slip by him. Not unless he lets it.
Tim turns an impressive shade of red. Tempting, like it always is, but mostly, you just feel like a teenager caught red-handed with her boyfriend.
…Which isn’t too incorrect of a description.
You look at him, lost.
He clears his throat, raising his voice to respond. “I—uh, yeah, if you don’t mind.”
“That’s fine,” Wally responds cheerfully. “Hope you aren’t allergic to sesame because I don’t care and I’m not going out to get something different for you.”
“Wally!”
Tim smiles, shaking his head. “I’m not allergic.”
“Too bad,” he says. “It’ll be ready in a few.”
Footsteps leave. Wally hums to himself loudly, happily.
You and Tim look at each other for a second before a giggle escapes you. Then another. He joins you in the next second, until you two are laughing loudly, listing into each other and flopping onto the bed.
In the kitchen, even from here, you can hear Wally and Linda laughing, too.
You grin breathlessly, looking at Tim’s smiling face, and decide the embarrassment of getting caught out is worth it, if you get to have this. All of them.
unexpected.
after your planned date with tim takes an unexpected turn, you show him just how full of surprises you are…
Tumblr media
word count: <500
warnings: not proof read…i kinda raw dogged this :p no use of y/n
notes: omg first thing of writing on here…im an autobiographical writer, haven’t touched fanfic since i was like 10. with that being said if i proof read it i won’t have the guts to post it. there will be better writing on my blog i promise. also super late for valentine’s day but it rained when i love the day of and no other day of the week n i thought it was funny.
“You told me you checked the weather Tim.”
You had called your boyfriend to let him know that a picnic wasn’t going to work. As soon as you woke up, the noise of rain pattered on your apartment’s roof, hitting you with the reality that being outside wasn’t an option.
“I did! Today is the first time this month it’s rained! But uhhhh should we do the Mary’s?” He tried to remedy the situation with the Italian restaurant in your university neighborhood.
“We go there all the time, can we do something special since it’s Valentine’s Day baby?” You smiled into the phone receiver. You knew he melted into man pudding when you called him baby and used that tone.
“Oh uhh-“ evidence of your work, “Anything you want. Maybe the rink and then hot chocolate after?”
“It’s a date.” You smiled, perfect time to show Tim what he didn’t know about you on the ice.
❅ ❅ ❅
Tim came to pick you up, you made sure to put on a raincoat. Not only to protect yourself from getting soaked, but also to reveal your outfit to your boyfriend in the car.
“Oh look at you, expecting to get some laps in?” He joked at the expense of your lululemon attire
“I like my pink define jacket, thank you very much”
“Hey! I like it too, definitely…tight. Hugs the right pla-“ You slap him on the shoulder, “Ow! Do you even know how to skate babe?”
This was your moment. Should you lie and wow him? Or should you tell the truth and loose your novelty? You lie.
“No actually, you’ll have to teach me.”
“That’s great actually, then you can’t let go of me-“ he smiled like an idiot before you interrupted him
“Don’t push it”
“Yes ma’am”
❅ ❅ ❅
You try not to be suspicious. ‘Act like you’re nervous, get shaky the first few minutes-‘
“Hey babe, need help with your skates?” Tim is an angel. As much as he likes to talk dirty, he genuinely cares and you always know it.
“Oh uhm, yes please”
“No problem.” he got on his knees and laced your skates up, “They need to be super tight, but not so tight you can’t bend your knees beyond a certain point.” Nobody could wipe the smile he had off his face. He was just happy to be teaching his girlfriend how to skate on Valentine’s Day.
“Thank you Tim. I feel like Cinderella, only my shoe has a sharp blade on it and my prince charming doesn’t know how to check the weather.” You giggle at his expense
“Im sure I’m a much better prince charming than whatever that guy had going on. Now stand up and see if it’s comfortable.”
“Perfect! Oh! I mean uhhh-“ You can’t let the jig be up, “Ouch super tight but I’ll be okay!”
Tim looks at you funny, but thought nothing if it, “Alright let’s go.”
❅ ❅ ❅
You can’t even stand it. You’ve been pretending to be awful at skating for almost 30 minutes. The real truth? You were on a figure skating scholarship just like how Tim was on a hockey one. You’d been skating since middle school and it had become a sport you loved deeply. You and Tim had been together for eight months, but the topic never really came up due to you thinking there were far more important things to your character.
“Can I try by myself?” your posture was awful, but it as about to be perfect in about 5 seconds
“Remember what I taught you about falling on your butt and not your face?”
It took so much not to roll your eyes, “Ill try not to fall because you like both of those things about me. think I’m okay.”
“Great! Let’s see you do 5 feet ahead. Go at any pace you want.”
You nodded, kissing him on the cheek. You immediately shifted into better posture, stopped shaking , and started skating at the pace you wanted, like he said. You begin with fluid crossovers, transitioning into quick footwork. With a push, you launch into a simple jump, landing with precision. You could feel the air whipping past your face as you gained speed. Your body twists and turns effortlessly, soon you’re skating circles around your boyfriend, who couldn’t do anything but look at you in shock. You stop right next to him.
“Was that okay?”
“Was that okay?? What are you doing studying here! People get injured all the time at the olympics I’m sure you could fill in and it would make no difference” He laughed in complete shock, “How long have you been skating for?
“More than 10 years”
“We should definitely take this to my place. You’ve won my heart. Not that you didn’t before I just- let’s go babe.”
“No I’m actually having so much fun!”
don’t take the girl
i actually cry so hard to this song every time i listen. i cried so much writing this, i’m sorry. please don’t hate me.
mark estapa x reader
words: 3,242
masterlist
8 years old
mark stomped his foot at his dads words, crossing his arms over his chest and pouting for a moment. his dad gave him a look, as if he was tempting him to fight him on the matter. and mark, ever the rowdy child, took him up on the offer.
“i don’t want her to come with us!” his dad sighed. “can’t we take jimmy? or tommy?”
“mark, it’s too late to invite any of your friends. i invited her dad and he suggested she come to keep you company.”
“but i don’t-“
“i know. you don’t want her to go. but maybe you’ll start to like her and you’ll change your mind.” mark shook his head.
“no. i’ll never want her to go.” before his dad could respond, you were walking through the gate of your front yard next door and walking over to the pair. you had a fishing pole in your hand and a bucket hat on your head, ready for the trip.
“well we can’t just leave her here! she’s come prepared!” he took the pole from your hand as he greeted you, then secured the pole in the boat. your dad was coming up behind you, ready for the day out on the lake. mark stood pouting next to you as your dads placed a cooler in the boat and your dad loaded in his pole and tackle box.
“alright, we ready to get this show on the road?” your dad asked, clapping mark on the shoulder. mark glared at you, rolling his eyes as he started to walk around the truck. his dad thought for a moment that he might just go back inside, despite how happy he had been all week to take the fishing trip. but he just walked to the back door and climbed in, slamming the door behind him. you opened the door you stood next to, hearing marks dad tell your dad that mark wasn’t very excited about you coming as you climbed in. you just shut the door and stayed silent, not wanting to upset mark any more than you already had with your presence.
you stayed quiet for most of the day, though you enjoyed fishing. you loved getting to reel them in, but hated having to take them off the hook. you found out, however, that mark loved taking them off the hook and measuring them, so you asked if he’d like to do it for you. he was hesitant, but agreed, and he seemed to be slightly more okay with you being there after that.
18 years old
you laughed at the dumb joke that mark made about the movie you both had just seen. as soon as the lights came on in the theater he made it very clear that he wasn’t fond of the movie, especially the way it ended. he stared making fun of some of the scenes as you both walked out, hand in hand. you shook your head at his antics, coming to a stop once you were on the street outside, turning to face him.
“you’re an idiot, estapa.”
“hey, i might be an idiot about a lot of things but i can promise you that i’m not the only one who feels this way about that movie.” you just smile at his little rant. “it was horrendous.” you giggle, then lean in to kiss him. you both keep it tame, as there are still people walking around downtown, but the street isn’t too busy. it’s 9:30 on a tuesday night after all. you pull away, just smiling up at mark for a second. and then all of a sudden, your presence is gone.
it takes a second for marks brain to catch up, but he notices you struggling and he notices the glint of the streetlight off the gun behind held to your side. the guy has his arm around your neck as he snarls at mark and you look terrified.
“just give me what i want and we won’t have any problem,” the man speaks lowly. mark is immediately patting at his pants pockets.
“i- i have some cash, not a lot. and my debit card is in there.” he throws the wallet on the ground near the guys feet. “and my keys.” he takes the keys and tosses them as well, and the guy watches as they bounce off the toe of your shoe. “if that’s not enough, i have this watch that i got from my grandpa and my phone. just please don’t hurt her.” you could see him trying to hold back tears but you couldn’t judge, you were doing the exact same.
“keep your car, bend down and take out the cash.” mark does as he says, holding the money out to the man. he quickly shoved the gun into his waistband and snatched the money from marks hand, then releases you from his hold and takes off running down the street. you let out a sob once he was gone, and mark was immediately pulling you into a tight hug.
“oh my god,” you cried into his shoulder, holding onto him just as tight.
“it’s okay,” he whispered, “you’re safe. i’ve got you.” he may have been trying to reassure himself just as much as he was reassuring you, but you didn’t need to know that. all that mattered is that you were alive and completely unharmed. twenty-three dollars was a small price to pay for that.
“um, sir?” mark pulled away from the hug just enough to see the kid who had sold them the tickets earlier in the night. he had a phone in his hand, wide eyes, and was just standing back up and holding marks keys out to him. “i just wanted to let you know that police are on their way. i saw everything and called.”
“thank you. we’ll come wait inside if that’s okay?” the kid, probably fifteen or sixteen, nodded, and turned to head back in. mark kissed your forehead and then pulled one arm away, keeping the other around you as you both headed back inside to wait for the police.
23 years old
your pregnancy had been rough. you had morning sickness almost all the way through. your cravings were terrible, mood swings that left mark slightly scared, and body pains that made you want to just curl up in bed all day. mark did his best to be there for you. he was always willing to run and buy you food, no matter the time of day or how far he had to drive. he didn’t get angry with you when you were irrationally angry at him two minutes after wanting to jump his bones, instead he did his best to talk calmly to you and resolve the situation you had created. he even gave you massages and held your bump when he could.
“mark.” he woke to you calling his name and you arm smacking against his torso.
“what’s wrong?” he asked, suddenly extremely alert.
“i think it’s time to go to the hospital.” he took a second to smile down at you, and you returned it.
“the baby’s coming?” you nodded.
“that baby’s- oh shit.” your face contorted in pain as a contraction hit, your hand reaching out for marks. he let you squeeze it as hard as you needed, knowing you were in pain and there was nothing he could do to stop it. he stayed silent until you eased your grip on his hand.
“let me grab the bag and put some clothes on and we can get going okay?” you nodded, sitting up and swinging your legs off the bed. by the time mark was ready, you had slides on your feet and you were waiting by the front door. mark smiled when he saw you, leaning in to give you a kiss. “let’s go have a baby, yeah?” he said softly. you giggled and nodded.
“let’s go have a baby!” the drive was short, but you still had another contraction in the car. your nails dug into marks thigh as he drove, and he reminded you to breathe. you hunched over a bit and he reached over to rub your back, trying to support you when he didn’t really know how. he parked and helped you walk in to the hospital, filling out the paperwork you were given as you took a seat. you only had one contraction in the waiting room before you were taken back to your own room.
“now it’s a waiting game,” mark said, scooting a chair up to the side of your bed and sitting down. he grabbed you hand is his, pressing a kiss to your knuckles. you looked down at his, giving him a tired smile.
“lovely.” he let out a small chuckle at your less than enthusiastic tone.
“she’ll be here before we know it,” mark assured you.
“i wish she’d be here in the least amount of contractions and pain possible.”
“don’t worry, they’ll come give you drugs soon.” you smiled at him them. you spent the next few hours being checked by nurses routinely while you and mark did your best to entertain yourselves. your contractions started coming quicker, but it was still a long and painful process. when the clock hit a decent hour, mark called his parents to let them know where you both were, but told them it would probably still be a bit before anything happened. then he did the same with your parents.
you were just recovering from a particularly painful contraction when your nurse came in to check over you again. she smiled when she looked up to you.
“i think we’re almost ready. i’m gonna go get the doctor and we’ll be back in just a few minutes to start pushing okay?” you gave her a smile as she left but it quickly turned to a look of panic as you turned to mark.
“excited?” he asked, a smile on his face.
“i just realized i have to push a child out of me.” he grabbed your hand, squeezing it and pressing kisses to the back of it.
“you’re gonna do amazing, baby. you got this.” you took a deep breath, trying to prepare yourself. “i’ll be right here the whole time,” he reminded you.
“you’ll hold my hand the whole time?” he nodded. “even if i’m crushing it?” he laughed, nodding again.
“even if you’re crushing it.” he stood cleaning over you to give you a kiss. he pulled away just as the door opened and a few nurses came in, followed by your doctor.
“okay lovely!” she greeted you. “are we ready to have a baby?” you took a breath, mustering up a smile.
“i guess so.” she smiled, getting everything ready.
“we’re gonna push on the next contraction, okay?” you nodded, looking over to mark with a nervous expression.
“i’m right here,” he whispered. you let out a deep breath. you sat waiting for a moment, hating the anxiety of it and just wishing the pain would hit. and then it did. the doctor was reminding you to push and you did, almost crying at the pain. you felt hot all over and way too vulnerable for the amount of people in the room. the contraction passed and yet, the baby was still inside.
“you did good, mom. we’re gonna try again on the next one, okay?” you nodded, taking deep breaths as you recovered from what you had just done. one of the nurses tapped your doctor on the shoulder and leaned down to whisper something, then they both glanced up to the screen displaying your vitals. you glanced up as well, but couldn’t really decipher what you were seeing other than a high heart rate. that seemed pretty normal to you though after attempting to give birth, so you tried to brush it off. when you looked back to the doctor, you noticed the nurse leaving the room. you didn’t have much time to question anything though, as another contraction hit and you were being told to push again. you were slightly frustrated, as there was still no baby. your chest hurt and mark asked if you were okay.
“out of breath,” you said.
“how else do you feel, mom?” the doctor asked.
“is it normal to want to vomit?” you asked. you closed your eyes, focusing on breathing through it all. focusing on how your baby would be in your arms in just a few short minutes. the door to the room opened, the nurse from before standing in the doorway.
“OR is ready,” she said. your eyes opened, flying to your doctor who was now stood.
“OR?” mark asked.
“don’t worry. we have to go for an emergency c-section because of the symptoms she’s exhibiting but everything should be fine.” the nurses lifted the breaks off of the bed you rested on, starting to wheel it toward the door. “can you show him to the waiting room?” she asked a nurse.
“waiting room?” mark questioned, alarmed.
“you won’t be allowed into the operating room. once the baby is here, someone will come get you to see them,” the nurse explained, giving him a sympathetic smile.
“but i-“ he watched as you were wheeled out the door, but before you could get down the hallway, mark was by your side again. he reached for your hand, leaning over to give you a kiss. “everything’s found to be just fine, baby. i’ll see you in a bit, okay? just know i’m jealous you’ll get to see her first.” you gave him a weak laugh, and then they were wheeling you away. he watched until he couldn’t see you anymore, wiping a tear as he turned to the nurse. he followed her to the waiting room, thanking her when they arrived. he wasn’t expecting to see his parents sitting there.
“mark! is she here?” his mom asked, standing from her seat. she held a teddy bear in her hands while his dad held onto some balloons.
“um, not yet. y/n was pushing and then they had to take her for an emergency c-section.”
“oh.” his mom gave him a look of sympathy, pulling him into a hug.
“do you think she’ll be okay?” he asked, his voice shaky.
“they’re gonna do everything they can for her, okay?” he nodded, sniffling as he pulled away. his dad stood and gave him a quick hug as well, and then the three of them sat down. the waiting was excruciating, the minutes ticking by slower than mark had ever felt time pass before. he couldn’t stop his leg from bouncing, and eventually his mom rested her hand on his knee to calm him. he sighed, running a hand over his face.
“i should probably call her mom again. i called right after i called you guys earlier and said i’d call again when she got here. but…” he trailed off, thinking about having to drop the news on your parents. he stood, about to make his way outside when he heard your name being called out to the room. he looked up to see your doctor standing there, and she gave him a tight lipped smile when her gaze landed on him.
“the baby is perfectly healthy,” she said when she had met mark halfway across the room. mark let out a small breath.
“and y/n?”
“y/n suffered from amniotic fluid embolism. it’s when amniotic fluid gets into the mothers bloodstream.” marks chest started to hurt at the fact that he was getting an explanation instead of an answer. “it’s a very rapid onset, which is why we rushed her from the room. we did everything we could for her but unfortunately, she didn’t make it.”
it took a second for the words to register in marks brain. she didn’t make it. the ache in his chest turned to a stabbing pain and his legs gave out, causing him to fall to his knees. she didn’t make it. his ears were ringing and his whole body felt heavy. she didn’t make it. he barely felt arms wrapping around him from behind, or saw his dad in front of him trying to get his attention. she didn’t make it. he felt suffocated, pulling at the neck of his shirt to try and get some air into his lungs, but when he couldn’t, he stood. he would’ve apologized for almost knocking his mom over if he realized that he had done it, but instead he just made his way through the doors and into the chilly air outside. she didn’t make it. that’s when he screamed. he had tears streaming down his cheeks and he screamed, letting all of his emotions out as his brain finally caught up with the ache in his heart.
he collapsed to the ground again, sobbing as he leaned against a pillar. he grabbed at his hair, pulling at it until someone was gently coaxing the locks from his fingers. he looked up to see his mom, looking down at him with a pained expression. he just cried harder, leaning into her instead. he wrapped his arms around her, clutching at her shirt as he sobbed.
“why her? why can’t it be me instead? i can’t- i can’t do this without her!” his mom rubbed his back gently, resting her cheek against his head.
“i know, honey. it’s going to be rough. just let it out, okay?” mark cried until he couldn’t anymore, which took a long time. he was still sniffling, and he had a raging headache and puffy eyes. he pulled away from his mom eventually, leaning his back against the pillar that they were still sat next to. he looked up to the sky, and then his eyes landed on his dad. he was standing a few feet away and had obviously been crying as well.
“her parents are on their way,” he spoke softly and mark nearly thanked him. instead, he let out a mix between a scoff and a laugh.
“you were wrong, dad.” mark shook his head. “i never changed my mind, not once in fifteen years.” his dad looked at him slightly confused as mark took a second to compose himself. “i still really don’t want her to go.” his dad let out a laugh, causing mark to laugh as well, and soon the three of them were sitting outside of the hospital entrance laughing to themselves. when it died down, his dad came and took a seat next to him. he rested his arm over his shoulder, pulling him into a side hug for a moment.
“i know it’s been a bit of a rough day, but i do believe you have a daughter in there that would like to meet her dad.” mark smiled, then his lips quivered a bit.
“we had a name picked out… do you think she would mind if i changed it a bit?” marks mom smiled at him, her eyes watery as she knew just what he wanted to do.
“i think she would love that,” she said softly, reaching out to squeeze his arm in support. he smiled back, giving her a cute nod.
“well then, i believe it’s time to go meet isla y/n estapa,” he said, standing from his spot and making his way back into the hospital.
Specter of Starlight - Part 1
Summary:
Tim meets a specter of a ghost on a roof. He doesn't know that, not at first. At first he just meets a friend. It's only later he becomes very, very scared for him.
Content warning:
While I promise a happy ending, this fic does not start out happy. The start of this fic deals with (mistaken) suicidal ideation. Neither character is, but the assumption is made and there's a lot of internal thoughts about running into someone on a ledge in the middle of the night and how to handle that. Proceed carefully, darlings.
Wc: 666 (coincidentally spooky)
_____
Sometimes a person on a roof was just a person on a roof— someone out to get some fresh air or distance or space. Sometimes a person on a roof was a tragedy waiting to happen. As protectors of the city, the Bats had to learn to tell the difference.
They tried to stop every time that they could, just in case, but when they were in the middle of a chase or attack they had to make a call. They all had choices that haunted them. They could only make the best guess based on what they knew. Obvious apartment complexes, lower buildings, people on the phone or smoking, in the middle of the roof— if they didn’t have the time, those were usually safe to pass on. Tonight it was an office building, several stories high, a person sitting on the edge of the building as silent and still as the stone gargoyle they were next to. Tonight Tim wasn’t going to risk passing by. At least the figure was looking up and not down. Maybe it was okay. Please be okay. Tim landed lightly, almost soundlessly, on the roof. Still, he saw the shoulders of the person stiffen ever so slightly. They had heard him. Tim let the toe of his boot catch purposefully on the aggregate of the roof— let himself be obvious in his presence. He went kept wide. It was far enough away not to be a threat (that was a lie, Tim would always be a threat) but close enough that at this height he would have time to catch the person if they jumped. With ease, Tim hopped up onto the ledge and let his feet dangle out over the open air. For him the height was comforting, an old friend. “What brings you all the way up here?” Don’t ask them if they’re going to jump. Don’t ask them if they’re that far gone. Don’t cement the idea in their mind. Out of the corner of his eye, Tim took in what details he could in dim light. Dark hair— black likely but possibly dark brown. Late teens likely, early twenties if they were a late bloomer. Which was possible. They’re far too lean— lean enough to be pushing into gaunt. Bright blue eyes flicked to look at Tim and then back up to the sky. “Stargazing.” Tim stared up at the cloud cover that was so thick not a bit of starlight sneaked through. They snorted, as if reading Tim’s mind. “Yeah, it’s not being very cooperative.” There’s a subtle drawl to their voice. Midwest accent, Tim’s subconscious supplies, not a Gotham native. Not even someone who’s been here long enough to lose the accent. Just long enough to be up on a roof in the middle of the night. Their voice is almost lost in the night air even though it’s still as death. There’s not a single breeze to snatch their words away, but the voice is still just a little hard to hear. “I don’t think you’re going to be in luck tonight,” Tim replied. “Lady Gotham isn’t known to be accommodating.” They gave a long hum at that, clearly thinking something over. “Guess I’m not really stargazing then.” “So what would you say you’re doing?” Tim tried to keep his voice casual. They gave a little shrug, eyes still glued to the murky sky. “Just… wondering it must be like… to die without getting to see the stars one last time.” Tim jolted towards them instinctively, his hands gripped white knuckled tight on the ledge to avoid reaching out. Don’t do anything that might give them a reason to jump. The stranger glanced at Tim again. A crooked smile graced their lips. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” Tim wants to say he’s not scared. It would be a lie. “I’m not up here to jump, I promise. I very much want to live.” Tim wanted desperately to believe that.
AN: Finally wrote the start of this last night when I couldn't sleep. I gave it a rough polish so here it is! I don't know if I'll post all of it on tumblr, as I think I want to play around with chapter pacing for effect, but have this here at least. (Also I cannot tell you how many times I wrote Tim as TIme.) As always, stay delightful.
