Why do you think people are divided about Giorno's morality? I seen people depict him as a soft traumatized boy and others make him even worse than DIO. While I hate woobification, I also don't like the idea of an abuse survivor being turned into a sociopathic manipulator. I love morally gray Giorno

Because he doesn’t have a morality that’s clear to pin down. People like to see the world in absolutes; it helps them define their own morality. The same applies to fictional characters. If a character can be seen as a victim of circumstance, a viewer is allowed to grant that character a certain set of permissions (i.e., “Giorno isn’t a sociopath, he was an abused neglected child and so taking over the mafia is his way of emulating the one trustworthy adult who ever graced his life,” just for example). On the other hand, if one views a character as driven entirely by their own hubris, one can feel more comfortable writing that character as completely evil or irredeemable (i.e., “Giorno only ever wanted power, it was in his blood as a Brando, and he didn’t care who he hurt to obtain it, childhood abuse be damned”). Good writers make characters who are somewhere in between, and I for one believe Giorno falls in that continuum between good and evil - Like, surprise, most human beings do.

The absolute beauty of connecting with and over media is our interpretations of it. A hundred people can interpret the same thing a hundred different ways, which may or may not be the same way the creator intended. People can depict Giorno, and Bucciarati and DIO and Joseph and the whole five thousand person cast of JoJo’s, any way they like, because they might key in on different things about their portrayal in canon. 

I absolutely think the longer Giorno stays in charge of the mafia, the more his heart and soul become corrupt. It’s the nature of the business. In that sense, it’s not his existence as an abuse survivor that’s being turned into a sociopathic manipulator - it’s a combination of all of his life experiences. People seem to forget that a person is not one single thing, not one single defining characteristic or trauma or event that happened in their life. He’ll have had, let’s say, 20 years of experiences that form the psyche he’ll most likely keep for the rest of his life. Some are more significant than others, and I’d say battling for your life over the course of 8 days, watching people you know and people you don’t die - some by your own hand - is a formative experience close to par with the neglect and abuse he suffered as a small child. So in this sense, he is at once a traumatized boy AND an abuse survivor AND a sociopathic manipulator. These things can all exist in a character - and a person - at once, and I believe they all exist in Giorno Giovanna.
