Take a Walk Outdoors Day
There are numerous benefits to taking walks, and doing so outside is much more fun than walking on a treadmill. Walking outside also gives you vitamin D, which 75 percent of adults don't get enough of. Taking walks can brighten your mood, as chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine are released during and after walks. Walking can lessen depression, and it is more effective in doing so if you walk outside than inside. Walking can also benefit the brain by helping new brain cells to grow, which can fight memory loss and dementia. Walking is beneficial for the heart: it can lower your blood pressure, and can lower your risk of getting a heart attack. It can also lessen your chances of getting lung cancer, help you burn fat, strengthen your bones, and keep your skin healthy by helping your body to produce more collagen.
How to Observe
Celebrate the day by taking a walk outside. Take a walk with family or friends, or spend some quiet time alone. Take a nice leisurely stroll, or power walk at a brisk speed. Walk in your neighborhood, or take a hike in a wooded area or state park. Above all, make sure you get outside and get some exercise. Your body and mind will thank you.

Toftenäs Trail, Sweden (No. 3)
The area is characterized by high species richness. Here are all the plants you can expect in Bohuslän. On the beach meadows, thrift and almond blossoms grow, and on the more calcareous eastern part, bridal bread and goldenrod grow. Wild roses, sloes, carnations and violets line parts of the trail. Along the mountain sides, junipers and heather cling, and by the brook, kabeleleka and kaveldun grow. Unusual plants, such as carnations, orchids and mountain capes are also waiting to be discovered. Among the character birds are song lark, thorn warbler, pea warbler, hamper and yellow sparrow.
History
Toftenäs has probably been inhabited since the Bronze Age, as soon as the ground rises above the sea. On Röseberget there is a cairn from that time. Toftenässtrand, west of the hiking trail, is one of the oldest documented landing sites on Tjörn: It was used as early as 1594. You can also see parts of the old riding route to the rectory in Sibräkka.
Tourist attractions
"Båseviga" outside the hiking trail are remnants of an old cod cookery from the herring period. Adjacent to this is an old stone street. To reach here, continue north over open ground as the trail turns off to the northeast. Then you continue west over the mountains. The path there is then quite difficult to find.

Toftenäs Trail, Sweden (No. 5)
A large bridge swoops from Stenungsund (on the Swedish mainland) to the island of Tjörn, a magnet for artists thanks to its striking landscapes and cutting-edge watercolour museum. Sailors are equally smitten, with one of Sweden’s biggest sailing competitions, the Tjörn Runt, taking place here in August.

Toftenäs Trail, Sweden (No. 2)
The hiking trail is located on the Toftenäs peninsula, an oasis in the immediate vicinity of Skärhamn. The peninsula is a scenic area, with a great richness of species of both plants and animals.
Most of the herbs on the west coast grow here. The old agricultural landscape also lives here, with active agriculture, old farms interspersed between the mountain bumps and beach meadows and other pastures kept open by grazing cows and sheep. The stone fences are characteristic of the area.
The trail starts just beyond the residential area in Toftenäs and follows the farmers' old road, between well-kept fields and pastures. Along the trail there are many gates to open and close. The last part of the trail runs along an old gravel road and the trail ends through the newer residential area.
The hiking trail can sometimes be quite wet after snowmelt and rainy weather. With good shoes, however, this is no obstacle. The trail is marked with orange color marking on posts and stones.
There are grazing sheep, horses and cows in the pastures so be sure to close all the gates after you.

Toftenäs Trail, Sweden (No. 8)
Tjörn Municipality (Tjörns kommun) is a municipality that covers the island of Tjörn in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Skärhamn.
Tjörn is the sixth largest Swedish island. It is located in the province of Bohuslän.
The former municipal entities on the island and adjacent islets were united to form Tjörn Municipality in 1952.
For centuries the local economy was dominated by fishing and boat building. The largest employers are still the shipping company TransAtlantic (formerly known as B&N) and the shipyards Djupviks varv and Rönnängs varv.
Tjörn is connected in the east to the town of Stenungsund on the mainland by the Tjörn bridge, and in the north to the island of Orust by the Skåpesund bridge. The municipal capital, Skärhamn, is also the municipal capital. Other communities, many of which are the fishing communities, include Rönnäng, Klädesholmen and Kyrkesund. The island of Mjörn, north-east of Tjörn, has large shell banks.

Toftenäs Trail, Sweden (No. 6)
After crossing the Tjörnbron, the Tjörn Bridge, with its coral-coloured cables with sky-blue attachments, the traveller descends to Sweden's sixth largest island, with an area of 148 km². Popular with tourists, it grows from 15,000 inhabitants in winter to 45,000 in summer. In terms of activities, it is the ideal island for hiking or cycling, not to mention its pleasant swimming spots. But it is surely the contemporary art lovers who will fall in love with this island, as they will find the Nordiska Akvarell Museet (watercolour museum), which presents the works of artists of the moment, from Sweden or elsewhere, as well as the amazing Parc Pilane where, in the middle of nature, sublime sculptures by artists from all over the world are displayed.

International Picnic Day
It’s often claimed that life is no picnic – but today it is! International Picnic Day is a chance to eat out in the open air with friends or family.
Placed conveniently in the middle of June, for many people this means that the weather should be fine and the sun shining (at least in the northern hemisphere). But even if the weather doesn’t want to cooperate, an inside picnic can be a great substitute. Just spread a blanket out on the floor and enjoy a simple meal!
So get that picnic basket ready and get started celebrating International Picnic Day.
History of International Picnic Day
The word “picnic” probably gets its origins from the French language, specifically from the word “pique-nique”. It is believed that this type of informal outdoor meal became a popular pastime in France after the French Revolution in the mid-1800s when it was possible again to get out into the country’s royal parks. However, even if it began in France, it has become a lovely activity that has spread all over the world.
As fans of Jane Austen novels will know, 19th-century picnics in England became elaborate social occasions, with menus featuring a wide range of cold meats and pies that took days to prepare.
Over the years, picnics have sometimes come to represent the gathering of the common people in political protest. One of the more famous of these was the Pan-European Picnic that took place in the summer of 1989 at the border of Austria and Hungary. It was part of many protests against communism that year that led to the fall of the Iron Curtain.
More recently, in 2009, the Guinness Book of World Records made note of the record for the largest picnic in the world. It took place with more than 20,000 people in Lisbon, Portugal.
Today’s picnics might be a bit more casual, sometimes just a few pieces of bread and cheese thrown into a paper bag and eaten on a park bench will suffice. A picnic can be centered around just about anything the participants want it to be, including games and other outdoor activities.
International Picnic Day is celebrated in many countries–a simple opportunity to enjoy the beauty of eating outside!
How to Celebrate International Picnic Day
Those who want to get in on the fun can find plenty of opportunities to celebrate this enjoyable day. Consider these creative ways of celebrating or come up with a list of your own:
Join a Picnic Day Event
Charity events, school picnics and all kinds of other group meals are organized to mark the occasion. Check with a community board or website to see if any picnics are planned locally. Look particularly at local parks or museums that often plan these types of events. If they are having one nearby, join in. If not–go ahead and organize it!
Have a Personal Picnic for Lunch or Dinner
A great way to celebrate International Picnic Day is to bike, walk or hike to a nearby beauty spot, or just take your sandwiches and cold hard-boiled eggs into the garden and enjoy an al fresco lunch. Those who are at work for the day can just take their normal lunch hour to head out to a patch of grass or park nearby.
Other ideas for piling foods into a picnic basket include:
Sandwiches. Perhaps the perfect picnic food, sandwiches make everything easy. Just pile some meat, cheese, and vegetables on a couple of pieces of bread. Add a few condiments, such as mustard or mayonnaise, and it’s a great start for a picnic.
Fruit. Most fruits come with their own natural packaging, making them the ideal food for a picnic. Grab some apples, oranges, bananas, or a giant watermelon to enjoy outside.
Side Dishes. Easy salads, potato chips, or a tray filled with veggies will make a picnic super tasty!
